Magical Self-Defense and Protection

Magical Self-Defense and Protection

Many people involved in Pagan and Wiccan spirituality find themselves, at some point, worrying about magical attack. What if someone casts a spell on me? How will I know? What do I do? More importantly, how do I protect myself so that it doesn’t happen in the first place?

Well, first of all, relax. Chances are really good that you’re not going to be the victim of a magical attack at all. Here’s why: it takes a certain amount of skill and effort to magically attack someone with a curse or hex, and honestly, many people aren’t interested in putting forth that much work, and of those, many do not have the skill level required for a magical strike.

In other words, not everyone who talks the talk can walk the walk. That having been said, if someone is willing to put forth the effort and they have the ability to craft an effective spell, it’s possible you could be the victim of a deliberate, concentrated attack.

Be aware, also, that in most cases, someone who tells you they’ve hexed, cursed, or otherwise put a spell on you is the one least likely to be able to do so.

How Do You Know if You’re Under Attack?

What is a magical attack? It’s a curse or a hex, that’s designed to make things go badly for you. If there are other circumstances in place, it’s probably not a magical attack. Maybe you’re just having a run of bad luck. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of changing your lifestyle, or looking at mundane causes. Let’s take a look at how to tell if you’re under a magical attack. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is there someone in your life that you have angered or offended in some way?
  • Is that person someone who has the magical knowledge to place a harmful spell on you?
  • Is a hex or curse the only possible explanation for what is happening to you?

If the answer to all three is “yes”, then it’s possible you’ve been cursed or hexed. If that’s the case, then you need to take protective measures.

Many people also choose to use divination as a way of determining whether they’re the victim of a hex or a curse, but if you do this, bear in mind that your own fears and worries may effect the outcome. It’s better to have the divination done by an objective party who isn’t aware of your concerns. Ask a trusted friend to do the divination, and see if they come to the same conclusions that you have.

Magical Protection

If you feel you’ve genuinely been the victim of a magical attack, the first thing to do is protect yourself from further mischief. Once you’ve done that, you need to get started on removal of the curse or hex. There are several methods of doing this. Some examples that may be used successfully include:

  • Create a “magic mirror” spell which bounces the hex or curse back to its sender*
  • Create a doll or poppet to take the damage in your place
  • Perform a working that will remove negative influences from your life
  • Use meditation, Reiki, chakra healing, or other energy work to lift the spell

For general protection, most people use a simple shielding method. This is a psychic shell that one draws around themselves. You can do this either by casting a circle of protection and recharging it periodically, or you can charge an amulet or talisman with protective properties. This will be an effective way of protecting you in the majority of magical attacks.

Property and vehicles can be protected as well. You can place a magical barrier or ward around your yard, keep a protective amulet or talisman in your car, or even set up a shield around your desk at work.

Magical Ethics

Magical Ethics

There’s a saying among the contemporary Pagan community that “black magic is whatever works, white magic is anything else.” This stems in part from a misconception that black equals bad, white equals good, and that there are no gray areas at all. However, nothing could be farther from the truth.

Let’s look at the word black itself, and figure out why it connotates evil. A big part of that is thanks to pop culture — after all, in popular shows like Charmed or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the good guys are the “white light” people.

The bad guys are surrounded by darkness. Another part of the whole black = bad concept is because of people who can’t let go of their Christian upbringing, in which those who are righteous are surrounded by the light of God, and those who are damned will dwell in darkness.

The problem with this logic is that darkness in and of itself doesn’t have to be bad at all. After all, how beautiful is a quiet night out in the country, miles away from the lights of a city? Have you ever walked in the woods at midnight, embracing the comfort of the shadows? Darkness is what lies in the soil, below the earth, before a plant grows in the spring.

It is the long nights of winter, when we are drawn into our homes to embrace our families and count our good fortune. It is the inside of the womb, warm and nurturing. Even the darkness of the grave, of death itself, may be seen as welcoming.

Once we accept that dark isn’t all that bad, it’s a lot easier to look at the concept of “black magic” vs. “white magic.” Even if we replace the words “black” with “negative” and “white” with “positive”, we’re still in a bit of a pickle, and here’s why: because it is the intent that matters as much as the action.

In other words, if someone performs magic that others might see as “negative,” but does it for what they believe is an honest and just reason, then is it really negative magic?

To do magic is to say that you want to bring about change in the Universe — after all, if everything were perfect, there’d be no need for magic at all. Any magic capable of causing change is also magic that can harm, simply by its very nature. Magic isn’t some Super Spooky Power that we have — it’s a tool we can use to precipitate changes. Any tool can be used for helping or harming — if I have a hammer, I can use it to build a house.

I can also use it to whack people in the head. It’s not the hammer that’s “negative”, but what I choose to do with it.

Case in point: in the early nineties, a serial rapist was terrorizing the women of a coastal city in the Carolinas. His reported victims, over two years, numbered at least two dozen, including a teenage girl who later committed suicide. A group of witches got together one night, and did a working calling for this man to be stopped by the Universe. A couple of weeks later, the prime suspect — who was later convicted — led police on a high-speed chase and wrecked his car, nearly dying from his injuries. He has lived since then severely handicapped, but he never raped another woman.

Negative magic, or no?

There are people within the Wiccan and Pagan community who feel that any magic that affects other people at all is unethical, and they have the right to not perform any magic on, against, or for others. However, there are an equal amount of people who believe that change brought about by magic is acceptable, just as change brought about by mundane methods is acceptable. Chances are, the two camps will never agree, but what you can do, as an individual, is respect the beliefs of those who may disagree with you, whichever side you may happen to fall on.

Look at magic as a way to improve your life. You can use it to bring love to you, to gain financial abundance, to eliminate problems from your life. You can use it as a method of growth and self-empowerment. It can be used to help you fulfill your dreams, desires and goals. Can you use magic to help other people? Sure — if they ask you to. If they haven’t asked — or if they’ve specifically told you NOT to do anything on their behalf, then don’t.

Ultimately, only you can decide which forms of magic fall into your personal system of ethics. If you feel a particular course of action is wrong, then avoid it. If you feel it is ethically acceptable, and you’re willing to accept the results of your actions, then so be it.

How Does Magic Work?

How Does Magic Work?

Question: How Does Magic Work?

You keep talking about magic and spells. I don’t get it, and I’m pretty smart. How do they actually work?

Answer:

That’s a really good question, and one that may have a number of different answers, depending on which people you ask. First, there are many different types of magic — natural magic, practical magic, high magic, ceremonial magic — and each is a little bit varied from the others.

Even when it comes to spell work, you’ll find a number of opinions on the Hows and Whys of the process.

In natural magic, there is a theory that many natural objects — rocks, roots, plants, animal bones, etc. — have a connection within them to some part of the human experience. For example, a rose quartz is linked with love and matters of the heart, a piece of oak would take on the attributes of strength and sturdiness, and a sprig of sage is connected to wisdom and purification. In this form of magic, also called sympathetic magic, the link between items and their magical symbolism is referred to as the Doctrine of Signatures.

Spellwork in natural magic is often carried out with no prayer or invocation to deities or gods. It is simply the natural attributes of the items involved in the spell that make the magic happen.

In some traditions of Wicca and Paganism, magic is the realm of the Divine. A practitioner may call upon his or her gods for intervention and assistance. For example, someone doing a spell working to repair their damaged love life might call upon Aphrodite for aid.

A person moving into a new home could invoke Brighid or Freyja, goddesses of hearth and home, as part of a ritual.

There is also a school of thought that believes magic occurs only in accordance with one’s will — in other words, intent is everything. Some people in these traditions believe that the physical trappings of spell work — candles, herbs, etc. — are unimportant, because all that really matters is the strength of will to bring about results. If one focuses one’s intent precisely enough, and manipulates the necessary energy, change will come about.

Regardless of how you believe magic actually works and whatever tradition you choose to embrace, understand that magic is a skill set that can be used in tandem with the mundane.

While magic will not solve all of your problems (and probably shouldn’t be turned to as some sort of cure-all) it is certainly a useful tool when used sensibly.

Astronomy Picture of the Day – A Quadruple Sky Over Great Salt Lake

Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.

2015 November 8

A Quadruple Sky Over Great Salt Lake
Image Credit & Copyright: Michael Wilson

Explanation: This was a sky to show the kids. All in all, three children, three planets, the Moon, a star, an airplane and a mom were all captured in one image near Great Salt Lake in Utah, USA in early September of 2005. Minus the airplane and the quadruple on the ground, this busy quadruple coincidence sky was visible last week all over the world. The easiest object to spot is the crescent Moon, which is easily the brightest sky orb in the featured image. Venus is the highest planet in the sky, with Jupiter to its right. The bright star Spica completes the quadruple just below Venus. The streak on the far right is an airplane. Mom is seated. Grandpa, appreciating the beauty of the moment, took the picture. This week, the pre-dawn sky shows a similar conjunction of planets.

Venus in Libra

Love gets sweet ‘n light with Venus in loving Libra

Tarotcom Staff

Love planet Venus, which rules relationships, beauty and pleasure, moves into its home sign of loving Libra on November 8, 2015, setting us up for a sweet time that highlights partnerships and social settings.

Venus in Libra is naturally harmonious. This is a time when we’re friendly, sociable, creative and our diplomatic skills peak. Libra is the most balanced sign, so this time always finds more of us striving to make sure things are fair and everyone is happy.

Libra is an Air sign, so it lends a breezy quality to love and partnerships of all kinds.  We’ll be polite and charming with one another, and peace will prevail. If you tend to argue a lot in your relationships, you will see less of that now.

That said, while relationships are bound to proceed smoothly with Venus in Libra, they won’t necessarily go very deep. This superficial quality comes into play because peacemaker Libra doesn’t want to rock the boat and might tell a few little while lies just to avoid upsetting anyone with the truth.

Compromise is a good thing, but do take extra care during this time to make sure you don’t sacrifice too much of your own needs for the sake of making someone else happy. Be fair to yourself, too!

In addition to creating more harmony in relationships, Venus in Libra is also very appreciative of the arts and beauty. So don’t be surprised if you spend more time than usual shopping for pretty things now or fussing to make your hair look good.

But there’s nothing wrong with that — you need to look good.  After all, Venus is in Libra so you probably have a dinner date!

bw-fehu

bw-fehuYour Rune For Today
Fehu

Fehu is the Rune of prosperity, good luck and unbridled creative energies. Being associated with Frey, this Rune is also a powerful omen of fertility. Fehu is one of the three Mother Stones and should never be taken lightly.

Additional information about Today’s Rune, Fehu

fehu: cattle

Phonetic equivalent: f

DIVINATORY MEANINGS: prosperity, money, wealth, concern with physical and financial needs, goals, promotion, self-esteem, centeredness, karma

MAGICAL USES: for money, business, promotion, finding a job, achieving a goal, starting new enterprises

ASSOCIATED MYTHS & DEITIES: Freyr, Brisingamen, Gullveig, Dwarfs, Sigurd & the Otter’s Gold

ANALYSIS: Fehu is both the day-to-day reality of our lives and the catalyst that awakens us to what lies beyond. It is whatever we think we are which frequently bears no resemblance to what we will eventually find. It is also our home, for after all our wanderings we will need to attend to our physical needs and ground ourselves in the simple pleasures of home, family, and good work. Oz might be a fun place to visit, but after a while all you really want to do is go back to Kansas.

Fehu reminds us that we must be secure in our physical situation before embarking upon any spiritual journey. We all must begin with the mundane reality of our lives, although many people never get beyond this. In many ways, we have become as domesticated as the cattle, living our day-to-day existence without wanting or even being aware of anything more being possible. The first step in breaking away from this situation is to catch a glimpse of what is possible, without dwelling on what security we may lose to attain it.

Your Personal Tarot Power Cards for Sunday, November 8th

Your Power Cards

This reading represent strengths you were born with.

The Hermit

The Hermit denotes a need to have some space between you and everyday hustle and bustle of our busy world. The Hermit needs to retreat. Indeed, happiness for The Hermit requires seclusion, freedom from material wants, and time for intense introspection. The answers The Hermit needs cannot be found in our physical world. The truths he seeks are internal, spiritual, and the distraction of a well developed social life can only impede his quest for his personal truths. Still, although not anything remotely resembling extroversion, The Hermit does sometimes need to share time with others; so he can learn or teach, guide and be guided. The Hermit’s time spent amongst people depletes his energy quickly. To avoid an overload he has to retreat from social settings quickly.

When The High Priestess is among your personal cards, the influence of The Hermit may be increased. Having The World or The Lovers in your personal cards may diminish the influence of The Hermit.

The High Priestess

Completely feminine and the counterpart to The Magician, the High Priestess is the Gatekeeper of the subconscious, the unknown. She travels in worlds which most of us only glimpse in our dreams. Her realm is that of unseen truths, untapped potentials, and hidden dangers. The Calling of The High Priestess is to go beyond the obvious and visible to tap those powers which are veiled from normal vision. While she is passive by nature, she has the power to uncover unknown potential and is very aware of the infinite potential all humans harbor within them. She is also very patient. She can wait for events to blossom in their own time.

When The Hermit or Hanged Man are among your personal cards, the influence of The High Priestess may be increased. Having the Magus in your personal cards may diminish the influence of The High Priestess.

Get A Jump On Tomorrow….

Your Horoscopes for Monday, November 9th

Aries

Aries Horoscope
Aries

The Moon continues to transit your partnership sector until an hour before day’s end, dear Aries, and you are relationship-focused, amiable, and accommodating. A friendly aspect between the Sun and Chiron can further ease your relationships, lending a nice feeling of encouragement to the day. There is a sense that you can learn and grow through your interactions. This influence serves to lighten your mood and give you the perspective you need. Resolving conflicts is easier, and intimate conversations can now serve to reinforce and reward. You might strengthen a relationship through shows of support and compassion. An emotional encounter can be heart-warming and offer you valuable insights into your life. If someone’s making you feel claustrophobic later today, when you may be second-guessing things, it’s a sign that you might be giving up too much for the sake of peace and at the expense of your own inner happiness.

Taurus

Taurus

While you can be quite focused on your daily affairs and practical matters today, dear Taurus, there is strong energy with you for relating. You might get to know someone better through their opinions and ideas, and your amazing listening skills. There is pleasing, humble energy to your social life, and this feels especially good to you. You are supportive and others tend to support and respect you, or give you the space and encouragement to be yourself. This can also be a good time for making a new connection or for boosting a current relationship with acceptance. Later today, the mood could change, and it’s important to try not to second-guess things. Recognize a need for change rather than feeling that others are caging you in.

Gemini

Gemini

While you’re certainly in the mood for some fun today, dear Gemini, there is also good energy for work and health. There may even be some recognition for what you do, particularly as you are remaining humble as you produce and perform! There can also be an opportunity to learn a new method or you could come into some useful information that helps you get the job done more effectively. Listen to wise counsel today – it may in fact lead to a boost in your health and well-being. It feels good when others value your helpfulness or the services you provide, and this is likely today. While there can be a somewhat jagged or hectic pace at times today, you’re seeing the bigger picture and are more able than usual to hone in on your priorities.

Cancer

Cancer

This is a good time for creative activities, dear Cancer, and for natural self-expression. You can feel especially free to be yourself, to explore new ideas, and to share a bit of yourself, or simply your good mood, with others. You are appreciated for your unique qualities and not afraid to express them. You are not afraid to be different, and not going out of your way to be, either. There can be especially honest and open exchanges, in fact, and you can play a role in helping someone to heal and move forward. Your unique vision or personal philosophy can be recognized and enjoyed now. The latter part of the day can introduce some surprises, largely work-related or having to do with responsibilities, but try not fret about these.

Leo

Leo

This can be a busy day, but pleasantly so, dear Leo. You may be feeling especially “at home” wherever you are – comfortable with others and especially in your own skin with the Sun and Chiron in harmony and energizing your sectors of feeling. Family matters tend to support your mood, and your intuition runs wonderfully high. You are also especially intuitive, able to feel out what others may need and reading signals well. Whether you are trying to or not, you are drawing others’ attention and making a strong personal impact. In fact, it may be understatement that works best for you now. The day can be hectic later today, and you may be torn between venturing out or getting the rest you need.

Virgo

Virgo Symbol/Glyph
Virgo

This is a good day for learning, studying, communicating, and negotiating, dear Virgo. You are listening and sharing equally, which makes you an especially good conversationalist now. You are likely to receive favorable, positive responses to your ideas or plans. Make time for others. Your persuasive powers are in good form, but today is more about getting to know others and picking up helpful information. Your understanding of others is tremendous, and this helps endear you to them. It’s a strong day for putting your energy into your work and projects. However, if you’ve been doing too much, you’ll feel the resultant tension later today. Fortunately, it’s relatively easy to get back into a positive and determined frame of mind.

Libra

Libra Glyph-Symbol
Libra

You are unlikely to be looking for recognition or appreciation explicitly today, dear Libra, but you’re likely to receive it. Sometimes what we don’t do is as important as what we do, and today, the simpler and more genuine, the better. Work or business can come together nicely now. Solutions to problems today won’t come if forced or overanalyzed – you’re best off focusing what you need to do at a gentle pace. Later today, there may be some tension in your interactions – a temporary disruption likely having to do with a need for change that is not yet acknowledged. Recognizing this is the most important step towards resolving problems now. Even with some surprise elements to the day, this is a nice period for resolving conflicts generally speaking, and tomorrow, more healing energy should arrive.

Scorpio

Scorpio Symbol Glyph
Scorpio

While you may need to deal with scheduling problems or tension from surprise elements that disrupt your routines today, dear Scorpio, this is a strong day for getting a real grip on your life. You’re magnetic and attracting wonderful feedback and some admiration. Even if the admiration is from a distance, you’re likely to feel it energizing you. It’s not everyday that we are acknowledged, and of course it’s important to learn how to create our own happiness when feedback is negative or indifferent. However, it feels good to get the boost now and again. Personal relations should be good now, and expressing yourself and your ideas more freely is part of this. A humble approach is the most becoming today. You might be a mentor of sorts right now, guiding someone to a better mental space. The Moon moves into your sign in the last hour of the day, bringing emotional needs to the surface.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius Glyph Symbol
Sagittarius

There can be much to learn through a little meditation or introspection today, dear Sagittarius. There can be a feeling that you’re centered and supported now, and you are exploring your inner resources. This can be a wonderful time for helping others as well, even if it’s about listening and acknowledging. Reflection can be especially good now, as there is a tendency for the ego to take a backseat, which frees you up to connect with your true feelings. In this way, you might come to a better understanding of why something happened in your past. It’s also a good time to speak to someone you trust, as there is more openness and receptivity, at least in the first half of the day. A hurried pace later on could disrupt the flow temporarily.

Capricorn

Capricorn Symbol/Glyph
Capricorn

Personal energy is flowing smoothly today, dear Capricorn. There is a natural, organic flow of conversation and ideas now that is gently inspiring and motivating. Your words or ideas can find a receptive, approving audience. In fact, you may even help someone get through a rough patch, or inspire someone with your attention and advice. There can also be increased confidence in cherished dreams and plans of a personal or social nature, and if you want to share these with others, support is generally forthcoming. Today’s energies generally favor a gentle approach, although there can be some tendency for a hectic pace later today, and possibly a minor conflict between the need to attend to family or personal matters and the desire to keep other connections and relationships alive. Even so, it’s relatively easy to focus your mind as the day draws to a close.

Aquarius

Aquarius

This is a strong day for getting a good sense of what you truly value on practical and professional levels, dear Aquarius, and also good for financial judgment. Your close relationships and partnerships can get a boost as well, particularly with an open and humble approach. You are both learning and guiding now, and others tend to be treating you respectfully or giving you the space to breathe and do your thing. You are also in a fine position to demonstrate or employ your natural talents or know-how. Focus on the unique elements that you bring to your work and your partnerships, and watch as you attract the right resources and people to you. The desire to talk, share your experiences, and open up to others may be strong. Later today, be a little more alert to the words you choose to express yourself. Pisces

Pisces

This can be a warm, vital day, dear Pisces, in which your unique manner is found to be especially endearing. There can be a guiding/learning theme today, and openness that leads to improvement and growth. Sharing ideas and personal philosophies can be bonding and rewarding now. You are especially drawn to people who are open-minded and tolerant, and there is optimism in your approach. The Moon continues to transit your solar eighth until the last hour of the day, when it moves into your adventure sector. By the 11th, the Sun and Moon will meet in this area of your solar chart, and you’ll find the motivation and energy to broaden your horizons in important ways, perhaps through publishing or promotional efforts, travel, or studying. For now, it’s a wonderful time to explore your own need for fresh experiences and ideas.
