A Courageous Challenger

It is not only wise men and women who were once persecuted for their adherence to the old ways, or for so-called “heresy.” Although he did not pay the price with his life, as did so many during the Burning Times, the German religious reformer Martin Luther was forced into hiding for criticizing the then almost omnipotent Roman Catholic Church. And it was on this day in 1521 that the papal bull Decer Romanum Pontificem (“It Befits the Roman Pontiff”), issued by Pope Leo X, excommunicated the Protestant Luther following his public burning of a previous papal bull, Exsurge Comine (“Arise, O Lord”).
