Magickal Applications for Wednesday

To the Romans, this day was called Dies Mercurii, or “Mercury’s day” Mercury was a popular character in the Roman pantheon. A messenger of the gods, he presided over commerce, trade, and anything that required skill or dexterity. The Celts also worshiped Mercury and eventually equated him with the Norse god Odin (some spelling variations on this name include Wotan, Wodin, and Wodan). In Norse mythologies, Odin, like Mercury, is associated with poetry and music. Interestingly enough, both Odin and Mercury were regarded as psychopomps, or the leaders of souls, in their individual mythologies.

Odin, one of the main gods in Norse mythology, was constantly seeking wisdom. He traveled the world in disguise as a one-eyed man with a long gray beard, wearing an old, beat-up hat and carrying a staff or a spear (which brings to my mind images of Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings). In the Old English language, this day of Mercury evolved into Wodnes daeg, “Woden’s day,” or Wednesday.

Wednesday carries all of the planetary and magickal energies and associations of the witty and nimble god Mercury himself. Some of these mercurial traits included good communication skills, cleverness, intelligence, creativity, business sense, writing, artistic talent, trickiness, and thievery. And don’t forget all of those wise and enigmatic qualities associated with the Norse god Odin/Wodin, not to mention the goddess Athena’s contributions of music, the arts, handmade crafts, and writing. Wednesdays afford excellent opportunities for seeking wisdom, changing your circumstances, and improving your skills, be they in trade and commerce, music and art, or in communication and writing.

Wednesday Is Ruled By Mercury

Wednesdays are wild and wacky days. They are for communication, change, cunning, and the arts. This is a Mercury day, and just its patron god this day is full of contradictions, change, and excitement. Some suggestions for Wednesday enchantments would include:

Pulling a little Wednesday color magic into your life by wearing purples or orange

Carrying a multipurpose agate with you and tapping into its various charms

Working with magical plants such as the fern for protection. This plant will also boost the power of any other magical plants with which it is arranged.

Incorporating lavender into charms and spells for transformation

Using the charming scent of lily of the valley to improve your memory, or working with the aspen tree for communication

Calling on Athena, patron of arts and crafts, for inspiration for a new project

Fanning out a Tarot spell to increase you creativity

Calling on Hermes on a Wednesday night to bring movement and good luck into your life

Magickal Workings for The Waxing Moon

The waxing moon is the period during which the moon grows from dark to full. It takes approximately fourteen days for this to happen. In many magical traditions, people use this time of the moon to perform “positive” magic — in other words, magic that draws things to you, or increases things. Some examples would include:

Any magic related to increasing material items

Janie Doodle is a reader who lives in North Carolina, and follows a practical magic belief system based in the folklore of her mountain ancestors. “This is the moon phase where stuff gets done,” she says. “Anything I need or am lacking in, I bring it right to me during the waxing moon. As the moon gets closer to full, so does my wallet, my larder, and my garden.”

A Little Witchery for Your Wednesday

Be bold and daring today! Expand your knowledge of the Craft by working with the planetary energies of Mercury on this multifaceted day of the week. Consider the Greco-Roman gods Mercury and Hermes and all of the many lessons they have for you. Embrace change and movement, and work on your communication techniques. Conjure up a little good luck for yourself with that Mercury dime spell. Call on Athena to inspire you to try magickal arts and crafts and to be more creative in your own spellwork and witchery.

Meditate on Odin and see what you can discover about him. I wonder what sort of fabulous and fascinating magickal wisdom you will uncover? Odin is a shaman, after all; he may appear in many guises and faces. I guarantee that he will make you laugh at yourself before he is through with you, but you will learn. It’s up to you what you do with that knowledge. Will you let it shapeshift into wisdom?

Wednesday is the wild and wily day of the week, so try to go with the flow; don’t fight the quirky energies of the day. Most importantly, follow your heart, and always keep a good sense of humor, because of Wednesdays you will really need it.

On Wednesday, August 3rd, We Celebrate….

Aomori Nebuta (Japan)
HUCHI

Themes: Harvest; Energy; Cleansing; Health

Symbols: Fire; Light; Energy Sources

About Huchi:
This Japanese fire goddess keeps our internal fires burning to give us the energy necessary for completing whatever projects are at hand. She also uses her fires to cleanse the human body and protect it from disease

To Do Today:
This ritual in Japan is designed to help farmers stay awake for longer intervals in order to complete their harvesting duties. By making an effigy of the sand figurine, they hope to appease the spirit of sleep and finish their tasks. So, when you need to keep a fire under a project or be a little more alert for the tasks at hand, turn on a light or ignite a candle. This activates Huchi’s power in your living space.

Alternatively, get a little sand from a beach or a child’s sandbox and empower it, saying,

Each pinch I take keep me awake.

Keep this handy when you’re working. Whenever you feel a little weary, release a pinch of the sand to the winds or the earth to refresh your energy.

For health-related matters, I suggest dressing warmly or taking a warm bath. As you do, meditate and visualize yourself in white, purifying flames that collect all your tensions or sickness and burn them away painlessly. Huchi lives in both the warmth and the fires of your vision.

The Dog Days of Summer— Then and Now

The Witching Hour

Dog Days of Summer— Then and Now

August tends to be brutally hot, and rain is all-important. all-important. According to tradition, these dog days are the scorching, sluggish weeks that begin in early July and continue throughout early September. These are some of the hottest days of the summer months; they tend to run in cycles, and their times may vary, of course, depending upon the region in which you live. So where did the term “dog days” originate from? From the Pagan Greeks and Romans.

The ancient people believed that when the dog star Sirius rose with the sun during this time of the year that it added its own light and power to the summer heat. The star Sirius gets its name from the Greek word seirios and means “glowing” or “scorcher.” However, the Greco-Romans weren’t the only ancient people to notice this star. To the ancient Egyptians, the star Sirius showed up just before the start of the Nile’s flooding season and the beginning of the sacred year. This was a vitally important time to them, as the floods brought new, fertile soil to the valleys.

Meanwhile, back in ancient Rome, the dog days were marked between July 23 and August 23. Apparently the word on the street was only a dog would be crazy enough to go out in the heat in old Rome at that time. This star’s extra power was thought to make plants wilt and the flaming passions of humans to run amok— which is where the term “star struck” may have originated from.

Even The Old Farmer’s Almanac says the traditional time of the dog days is from July 3 to August 11. They stick to this date because, interestingly, these dates match the ancient timing of the rising of the dog star Sirius over the eastern horizon.

Sirius is still the brightest star in the heavens, next to the sun. Now, before someone starts to hop up and down, thinking they have found a mistake, keep in mind we are saying stars, not planets. So, yes, Venus and Jupiter may be brighter in the heavens— but they are planets, not stars.

Now to the technical bit: Sirius is found within the constellation of Canis Major, or Big Dog. This constellation is thought to represent one of Orion’s hunting dogs. By following an imaginary line to the southeast (or to your left and slightly down) from the three stars of Orion’s belt, the brilliant star Sirius can be found in the night sky.

The months of July and August are typically hot, steamy, and intense. I always figured it was summer’s way of getting the last word in before the autumn season swept in. Some folks will claim it’s due to climate changes… I’m betting it is a combination of both the summer and a dose of Sirius’s power.

The Magickal Month of August

Wiccan
The Magickal Month of August

There are two theories as to how August got its name. Some historians say the designation honors the Roman emperor Augustus, a man renowned for his leadership skills and love of the arts. Others claim the name derives from Juno Augusta, an oracle in ancient times. In fact, Roman seers were often called “augurs,” which gives some credence to the second interpretation.

In either case, August contains numerous music and art festivals and county fairs that continue in summer’s high-energy cycle but also show signs of autumn’s harvest theme. You will also begin to notice an increase in the number of festivals for the dead, now that the sun’s light is waning.

In terms of magic, August accentuates kinship or community spirit through its gatherings. It is a time to enjoy the remaining warmth of the earth, celebrate the human spirit, and generally make yourself more aware of how you use your time. Remember, fall is just around the corner, so cast spells for energy and health, with a little happiness tossed in “just because”!

Good Wednesday Morning To All Our Dear Family & Friends! Are You Ready To Rock This Day?

witchcraft
Good Wednesday morning, my sweets! It is great to be back. I hope you missed us because we missed all of you. Again, I apologize for everything but unfortunately it couldn’t be avoided. I wanted to let you know that we are currently experiencing a electrical short and have a electrician coming out to check it out. I love it, he is suppose to be here sometime today! Sometime today, do these people not think you want to know a precise time when they are coming out? Anyway, if we disappear, you know what is going on.

I should add we(especially me) are a little rusty. I had to open up another browser and double check the info as it came through. It is bad when you can’t remember what you use to do just in a matter of a few days. I have a feeling after today things are going to get back to normal. I just have a super relaxed feeling for some reason. I appreciate your patience and if for some reason the date of July shows up, just ignore it, lol! That bad really!

Alright then, let’s get party started….

Love ya,

Lady A

Good Tuesday Morning to all of our dear, sweet family here! We owe you a big apology and explanation, I am so, so, sorry for missing yesterday….

A Cute Ted For You...

I would like to wish everyone a very belated Happy Lammas. I apologize for us being off the internet for the last few days but our lives have been a living hell! Really, no joke! We were planning on being back on the net yesterday but the weather didn’t cooperate at all. I have never seen such weather for this area. The wind got up, it sounded like someone was knocking on the door, it was blowing so hard. Then it was like someone just took pails of water and just started dropping them on top of us. The lights went out, the water came up and we had to move it. Now, I have experienced a flash flood, first for me. I can survive three tornadoes but that rushing water is something else and I can swim.

nicolas

Nicolas

Anyway, I know Lady Beltane called and I apologize, sweetie. I don’t know how the answering machine picked up your message since the power was out. But I did get it this morning and I wanted to introduce you and everyone else to my newest baby, Nicolas. He is an absolute doll. I love it, I go from a person without a pup to a person with two! I also had to get rid of my bobcat. Razzy(the bobcat) got to the point she didn’t want to socialize with anyone. She just stayed in the bedroom and would occasionally come out to get me and that was it. My daughter took her out to that end of the country. I should also mention that my new baby came from her also. She told me she was tired of me crying so she got Nicolas for me. She is a good kid, ha, grown woman. It is nice to know they actually care. She came out here yesterday and took Razzy with her. The first night Nicolas was here, we came into the bedroom and I bent down to see where she was, she was under the bed, in attack mode. From Sunday night to Monday morning, I shut the bedroom door and we all slept in the living room. Well, the pups did, I didn’t sleep a wink. It got quiet, everyone had settled in for the evening and I got hit with some horrible images. I don’t know if Kiki and Mocha sent them to me or Morrighan did, but they were horrible. They showed me what would happen if Razzy stayed here and I don’t even want to describe it. It was awful. She knows how to open doors and it hit me what if she opens that door and comes in here. So I didn’t sleep a wink at all and everyone was wanting to know why I had the shakes yesterday, go figure!

Everyone thought I would cry and be upset when Razzy left. They were all amazed, I didn’t. The night before Kiki passed, Razzy had bite her. Since then, I had lost all feeling for her. I also blamed myself for it. I was checking the email real quick and that was when she bite Kiki. The next day, she died in my arms. Razzy didn’t bite her that hard. Kiki didn’t die from the bite at all. She was just fed up with the bull from Razzy and she went after her like a Pit bull. Then after that, she started acting strange but I never figured she would die a few hours later. I really hadn’t felt comfortable on the computer and like I said I blame myself for Kiki’s death. If I hadn’t been on the computer, then maybe Kiki would be alive. I could have prevented the bite. I don’t know Razzy’s personality had changed so bad since Kiki died. She wasn’t the same or maybe it was because I didn’t feel the same about her anymore. I don’t know but I know I went to bed last night and actually slept for the first time in a long time.

I think everyone appreciates the break from the internet. I told them to give me a day or two to get Nicolas settled in and hopefully things will get back to normal. I look at it this way, they work their rumps off and I know they have to get burnt out. We really hadn’t took that much time off since we have been on WordPress. I was planning on up-dating the sites today and we will get back to work tomorrow, hopefully. Like I said it has been a living hell around here for the past month, well little over a month. I told my daughter I was about ready to jump off the bridge and she took me seriously, gee whiz! She is a Physician’s Assistant and told me, she was obligated to call the law if she knew of anyone who was threatening suicide. It was like, WHAT!!! I was just kidding, I love me too much, thank you!

But anyway, that is not here nor there. I wanted to let you know what was going on. I also wanted to apologize for missing Lammas and Imbolc for those down under. I know Imbolc is about cleansing and purification. The seasons are definitely screwed up. We got a cleansing with all the darn water yesterday. I should add it is storming today also. It has rained every day since Kiki passed. I am sick of rain. Like I said I wanted to apologize, introduce the newest member of my family and let you know what is going on. I sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding with us, as we try to get back to normal. So if we don’t get blown away or washed away today, we will be back tomorrow. Till then…

Love ya, my sweets,
Lady A

Oh, almost forgot (see, no brain), the raffle is going to be drawn on schedule. Remember it is due to end the 4th of this month. We will draw the winner then and announce the results on the 5th, I hope. So if you want to get in on some great merchandise, don’t miss this chance. The raffle has raised a good amount of money, thanks to all of you. We should survive the winter. So anyone still interested in it, check out the items and get your ticket before the end of the day on August 4th. Thank you again!
