Explanation: Seen any planets lately? All three planets now shining brightly in the night sky are imaged in these panels, captured last week with the 1 meter telescope at Pic du Midi Observatory in the French Pyrenees. Near opposition and closest to Earth on May 30, Mars is presently offering the best ground-based photo-ops in the last decade. The sharp image finds clouds above the Red Planet’s north pole (top) and towering volcanos near its right limb. Saturn reaches its own opposition tonight, its bright rings and gaps clearly revealed in the telescopic portrait. Jupiter is currently highest during the evening twilight and shows off its planet-girdling cloud bands and Great Red Spot in this scene. Of course close-up images of the ruling gas giant will follow the July arrival of the solar-powered Juno spacecraft and JunoCam.

Earth goes between sun and Saturn tonight

Tonight – June 2, 2016 – according to clocks in North America, our planet Earth will fly between the ringed planet Saturn and the sun, bringing Saturn to what astronomers call opposition. In other words, Saturn is opposite the sun now. This is a big milestone for our year of observing the ringed planet! We go between Saturn and the sun on June 3 at 0700 UTC. For the Americas, that places Saturn’s opposition on June 3 at 3 a.m. EDT, 2 a.m. CDT, 1 a.m. MDT and midnight PDT.

How to translate UTC to your time zone

So this is Saturn’s special day, its yearly opposition, when Saturn is opposite the sun in Earth’s sky. As a consequence, Saturn rises in the east at sunset, climbs highest up for the night at midnight and sets in the west at sunrise. It is visible all night, closest and brightest for this year.

Although Saturn comes closest to Earth for the year on the same date that it reaches opposition, the ringed comes nowhere as close to Earth as the above diagram might lead you to believe. At present, Saturn lies some 10 times the Earth’s distance from the sun, or 9 times the Earth-sun distance from Earth. (Astronomers refer to the Earth-sun distance as the astronomical unit.) For a realistic depiction of Saturn’s size relative to that of our planet Earth, take a good look at the illustration below.

Top 3 tips for recognizing Saturn. Don’t assume this is a one-night-only event. Saturn’s opposition guarantees the ringed planet will be in good view throughout June and July 2016. Here are three tips for recognizing it:

1. Saturn near the planet Mars, which was closest to Earth on May 30 and is now extremely bright, brighter than any other object in the eastern half of the sky each evening. Find Mars, and you can find Saturn nearby.

2. Saturn is also near the star Antares in the constellation Scorpius the Scorpion. Antares is not as bright as Mars, but it is a reddish star, bright and a great twinkler.

3. Saturn, Mars and Antares make a triangle on the sky’s dome. Very noticeable. If you have a dark sky, you’ll see that this triangle places Mars and Saturn on opposite sides of the arc of three stars close to Antares in the night sky, called the Crown of the Scorpion. See the chart above.

Saturn will remain a fixture of the evening sky until October 2016. All the while, golden Saturn shines in close vicinity of ruddy Antares, the brightest star in the constellation Scorpius the Scorpion, and to very bright Mars.

More tips on seeing Saturn throughout 2016

Saturn, the 6th planet outward from the sun, is the most distant world that’s easily visible to the unaided eye. Telescopes revealed its rings in the 17th century. Spacecraft in the 20th century revealed that what we thought of as three rings around Saturn to be thousands of thin, finely detailed rings – made of tiny chunks of ice. Saturn also has 62 moons with confirmed orbits. Only 53 of Saturn’s moons have names, and only 13 have diameters larger than 50 kilometers (about 30 miles).

Saturn is truly a wondrous world of rings and moons. It’s everyone’s favorite thing to celestial object to gaze at through a small telescope, so if there’s a public astronomy night near you this month – go!

Bottom line: Look for Saturn at opposition tonight – June 2-3, 2016. It will be shining in the east this evening, above the bright star Antares. Can’t see Saturn tonight? No problem. It’ll be in an excellent place to observe throughout June and July 2016.

After a thunderstorm, or any period of extreme tension, a period of new clarity and fresh opportunity follows. The storm has the effect of clearing the air and suddenly reducing atmospheric tension. Deliverance is at hand. In the wake of a storm on land, deliverance appears in the form of new color and life, which bursts forth in all the fields and flowers. In the wake of a storm at sea, deliverance takes the form of land itself.

In the field of human relations, the rain of forgiveness washes the human landscape clean after a period of conflict and enmity. Great clarity of purpose and renewed vigor can follow the healing of old wounds. But care must be taken not to re-open such wounds by moving too quickly. In the same way, it is important to return to normalcy before moving ahead with new plans after periods of stress.

Following the resolution of a difficult situation, your first priority, should be to return to normal conditions as quickly as possible. Breathe a sigh of relief, but don’t relax completely. It would be a mistake to re-awaken the sleeping dogs of the immediate past before the new situation has crystallized. Look ahead. Attend to any residual matters that need resolution, and do so as quickly as possible. Make a clean sweep of the past, move deliberately and the future will bring good fortune.

Hi I’m Brigit, founder of Biddy Tarot, and this is the Monthly Tarot Forecast for June 2016. I’m going to walk you through the three Tarot cards around the Blessings for the month, the Challenges, and the Recommended course of action.

Blessings card: Ace of Swords reversed

For the Blessings I’ve drawn the Ace of Swords reversed. Upright, the Ace of swords is about having a mental breakthrough where you suddenly get amazingly clear insight, and your thoughts around that situation are just so sharp and laser-focused.

In the reversed position, this can be about getting mental clarity on some inner work that you might have been doing. So if you’ve been having a bit of a rough time over the last few months trying to work out who you are, know that in June, it’s going to kind of burst into your mind like, “Ah! Now I get it.” “Why do I do this? Why do I do that? Ah, now I know.” It’s just that inner clarity about something that may have been bugging you for a little bit.

 

 

 

Challenges card: Page of Cups

For our Challenges I’ve got the Page of Cups. It’s interesting, we’ve got a Page, and we’ve also got an Ace. Both of these are about new beginnings, or being on the cusp of something new. With the Page, it’s kind of like he’s found a new part of himself that he’s wanting to explore. And with the suit of Cups, that part of himself has to do with emotions — perhaps it’s a new feeling or an emotion that he’s been experiencing.

Now as a Challenge, this may be a sign that, as a result of your inner mental breakthrough, you are now starting to experience emotions that you haven’t necessarily experienced before, and it’s all new to you. It’s not necessarily going to be really negative emotions for you, it’s actually kind of intriguing, and like, “Oh! I didn’t realize I felt that way…” But it does appear as a Challenge, so it just might throw you off a little bit, but I see this as temporary.

So just remember to really open up that space so that you a can experience those new emotions — honor them and acknowledge them. So that’s how you can minimize some of those Challenges with the Page of Cups.

Recommendation: Eight of Wands reversed

Our final card is the recommended course of action, and we’ve got the Eight of Wands, reversed. The Eight of Wands is typically a card of movement, action, things are just like “whoosh!” just like those Wands are going.

In the reversed position, it can be a sign not to rush into things too quickly. So yes you’ve had this beautiful mental breakthrough, and yes you’re starting to experience some new emotions that you haven’t necessarily experienced before, but just take it easy. You don’t have to take action around all of this new stuff straight way. It might actually be in your best interest if you allow it just to simmer and settle for a little bit. Just let it integrate within you before you need to actively go out and do something about it.

You want to be able to create a little bit of a shift in your own energy to get things moving again, get that chi going through you. I think that’s what’s going to really help with that extra breakthrough you’re getting and dealing with new emotions you might be experiencing.
