Your Daily Horoscopes for Friday, December 18th

Aries

Aries Horoscope
Aries

Intensity, passion, and emotional attachment are more prominent themes in your love life with Venus transiting your intimacy sector these days, dear Aries, and you might find that attracting resources from outside sources comes more easily. It’s a good time to work out money problems or other issues of sharing with a partner, and this is especially true this week. While there can be some confusing signals coming from someone close to you this tonight, once past that, it’s a strong time for repairing relationship woes, if necessary, or of coming to a better understanding of your relationship situation. The Moon enters your sign this afternoon, and this brings your emotions to the surface. You could have a feeling of urgency when it comes to filling your needs.

Taurus

Taurus

Venus has been moving through your partnership sector, dear Taurus, and this tends to warm up close relationships or brings pleasant people into your experience. Today, however, you can feel a little caged in, but it’s a temporary feeling. Try to put worries about your past behind you so that you can better enjoy the present. Tonight and tomorrow are, in fact, excellent for naturally gaining respect without having to prove yourself. Your better qualities are emphasized, and your ability to connect with others enhanced further. You’re entering a slightly less sociable phase this afternoon – two and a half days when it’s natural to need to recharge your emotional “batteries”. It’s not the best time for visibility, but some level of withdrawal is necessary for busier times to come.

Gemini

Gemini

Ideally in the last couple of days you have become clearer about what is expected of you, and what you can expect from yourself, dear Gemini. Now, it’s time to absorb what you’ve learned but also to release some of the pressure. Pay close attention to how you feel in a group or with a particular friend today. Decide whether your interactions are empowering and encouraging, or if they leave you feeling drained. Consider ways to keep yourself busy, absorbed in things you love doing, so that you are not as vulnerable to the ups and downs of your social life, and embrace a greater sense of peace. Tonight and early tomorrow brings warm energy for putting faith in and learning from someone.

Cancer

Cancer

New attractions and desires can abound today, dear Cancer, but may not settle in for the long term. Emotional outbursts, rebelliousness, or impulsiveness are tendencies now if you’re feeling stressed. Take a deep breath and try to tackle things one at a time, step by step. Later today, you feel a little more playful and love matters tend to be laced with a touch of drama. Tonight and tomorrow are good for strengthening a love bond. Open your heart! With the Moon moving into your public sector this afternoon, it’s that time of the month when you should be on your best behavior. It’s time to take care of business, tend to professional priorities, and keep your cool (unless you want something private to come to light).

Leo

Leo

While there is generally good energy with lovers or love interests these days, dear Leo, there can be some tension and indecision affecting your mood. You value familiarity in love with Venus in your sector of home and family these days, and can sometimes feel a little off center if schedules change or plans are disrupted. Today, expect the unexpected and aim to be flexible. You may be unsure whether you want to play it safe for go out on a limb. Bringing peace, harmony, and beauty to your home environment can be a strong need, and tonight and into tomorrow morning, you should find it easier to do so. It’s also a time for healing and better understanding your affections.

Virgo

Virgo Symbol/Glyph
Virgo

You can learn a lot about your relationships today and tomorrow, dear Virgo, and also about your own needs, wants, and desires. Read too much or dig too deeply and you will only get yourself into sticky and ambiguous territory, however. This can be revealing if you’re aware, but perhaps a little disruptive if you’re avoiding deeper issues. What is most appropriate now is to take a step back to observe your interactions today without detaching yourself from the intimacy of your interactions. These days, verbal rapport and open lines of communication are especially vital to engage your heart. Tonight and tomorrow are strong for showing support of important people in your life, particularly through kind words and verbal support. It may also be a good time for making a decision about finances.

Libra

Libra Glyph-Symbol
Libra

While these days are good for relationships and personal magnetism, dear Libra, today you may be feeling a little out of step, particularly if you are waiting or relying on others. Try not to dwell on feelings of being ignored and instead attempt to immerse yourself in things that you love doing. There can also be a strong desire to spend on clothes, furniture, and entertainment, or anything that makes you feel comfortable, secure, and pampered. Of course, it’s important to consider the future if you do, as comfort in the present may not be worth longer-term feeling of insecurity or worry over resources. If you move past your fears and look within, you can take fuller advantage of a lovely Venus-Chiron aspect coming into orb tonight and perfecting tomorrow. This is a time for opening your heart and putting fears behind you. Others may be putting faith in you, and they’re appreciating your more unusual and unique qualities.

Scorpio

Scorpio Symbol Glyph
Scorpio

Today, you may be struggling with your seemingly at odds needs for closeness and intimacy and your desire for independence, dear Scorpio. This can lead to mixed signals that throw others for a loop until you recognize that there are ways to combine the two needs. This energy can also be felt in terms of desires for unusual things, activities, and pleasures that are different or reflect your inner unrest and need for change. There could be some erratic behavior in a partner or love interest. Insecurities are likely to dissipate dramatically once you get in touch with your heart. You are more courageous in love tonight and tomorrow. Have faith in someone, and they will want to do right by you.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius Glyph Symbol
Sagittarius

Avoid behaving erratically in your relationships today, dear Sagittarius, and instead attempt to get to the root of any unrest stimulated now. You may be dealing with private matters of the heart, and should try not to make premature or rebellious decisions. People may surprise you or make changes now that can be a little disruptive. Tonight and tomorrow morning, be open to sharing something of yourself. It doesn’t have to be a commitment or a statement if you’re not ready to make one; it can simply be some current feelings or stories about the past. The Moon moves into your romance and creativity sector late afternoon, and this points to a stronger sense of fun.

Capricorn

Capricorn Symbol/Glyph
Capricorn

There can be some feelings of unrest experienced today, dear Capricorn, and perhaps some off timing socially. It makes sense to try to get to the root of any unusual desires that come over you now, as they may simply be a symptom of the need for a small change in your relationships or patterns of relating. Later today, you might derive special pleasure and satisfaction from groups of like-minded individuals, or with friends and associates. Camaraderie is especially important to you right now, and this is a good time for building faith in a relationship. There can be healing powers to your words. Opening up to warm feelings brings rewards now.

Aquarius

Aquarius

You can experience some over-sensitivity to what you might perceive as criticism today, dear Aquarius, even if none is intended. Inner restlessness can lead to overindulgence. Try not to speak too soon of unrest, as you may simply need a change of pace. Later today and into tomorrow, there is good energy for understanding a business or financial matter better, or the motives of a person you work with or for. It’s important to be open to learning from and through others and to share your own expertise as well. Comfortable activities delight you most right now, but as the day progresses, there is a stronger tendency to reach out and communicate.

Pisces

Pisces

Emotions can fluctuate today when it comes to money and possessions, dear Pisces. You must first learn to define what is yours before you feel confident about giving to and sharing with others. However, look for inspiration from a loved one, as someone could awaken a new perspective or way of thinking in you. You fare best when you are reaching out beyond your usual bounds these days, so aim to deal with fears of change in order to move past them. Insecurities are better handled tonight and tomorrow. This afternoon, the Moon leaves your sign, and this tends to take emotional pressure off.

A Yule Poem for the Children – The Childs’ Wonder

Yule Comments & Graphics

A Yule Poem for the Children

The Childs’ Wonder

“Daddy”, she said, her eyes full of tears,
“will you talk to me and quiet my fears?
Those bad boys at school are spreading a lie
’bout the impossibilty of reindeer that fly.
There’s no Santa Claus, they say with a grin
there’s not one now and there has never been.

How can one man take all of those toys
to thousands of girls and boys?
But I told them Daddy, that they were not right,
that I would come home and find out tonight.
Mama said wait until you come home.
Please tell me now that I was not wrong.”

Her Daddy looked at her questioning face
and puffed his pipe while his fratic mind raced.
He had put this off as long as he could,
he had to think fast and it better be good.
Whispering a prayer, he began with a smile,

“Remember at circle how we learned to pray,
asking the Goddess to take care of us each day?
And you know how we say a prayer before each meal?
To this same Goddess whom we know to be real.
Though we never see her, we know she is there
watching her children with such loving care.”

“The Goddess started Yule a long time ago
when she gave us herself to love and to know.
A spirit of giving came with that gift,
and her generosity filled the whole earth.
Man had to name this spirit of giving
just as he names all things that are living.”

“The name Santa Claus came to someone’s mind
problably the best name of any to find.
There is, you can see, and I think quite clear
Truly a Santa who visits each year.
A spirit like the Goddess, whom we never see,
She enters the hearts of your mother and me.”

“Each year at Yule for one special night
we become him and make everything right.
But the REAL spirit of Yule is in you and in me
and I hope that you are old enough now to see
that as we believe and continue to give,
our friend Santa Claus will continue to live.”

Reducing Your Holiday Stress at Yule

Yule Comments & Graphics

Reducing Your Holiday Stress at Yule

It should be the happiest time of year, right? After all, the Yule season is when we celebrate the return of the sun, and the days start to get a little brighter. The mundane world is observing Christmas and Hanukkah, gifts are being given all over the place — it should be a season of great joy. Yet for many people, late fall and early winter are a time when frustrations begin to build, and anxiety (and often depression) set in.

Between getting together with family, preparing big meals, shopping for gifts, decorating the house, and spending money on others, for many people Yule can be a time of overwhelming stress. Here are a few tips on reducing your stress levels during the Yule season.

1. Set your limits.

Are you in charge of the community coat drive, the local toy roundup, and getting your entire PTO’s winter fundraiser up and running? Step back! Be willing to say “No” when someone asks you to commit more time and energy than you have to give. We all want to help others at this time of year, but if you take on more than you really are capable of, you’ll become resentful and angry – and that’s no way to spend the Yule season.

Learning to say “No” might be the best gift you can give yourself this year.

2. Enlist help.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed by the eighteen boxes of Yule décor in your basement? Fine — put the kids to work. If you don’t have kids — or if yours are too young to decorate — put on a pot of wassail and invite a few friends over for a decorating party. It will take the stress out of the situation if you’re surrounded by people whose company you enjoy.

Likewise, if you’re hosting a holiday dinner, ask others to show up early to set the table or to bring part of the meal as a side dish. I’ve learned that if I plan ahead, and just ask, I can usually get someone else to commit to taking care of cleanup afterwards!

3. Don’t overspend.

One of the biggest holiday stress-outs is the knowledge that you’ll be paying off Yule until June. Don’t let this happen. Make a budget, and stick to it. For more on how to do this, read about How to Have a Budget Friendly Yule. Also remember, you don’t have to go crazy with the gifts. Do you want to teach your children about the value of the holiday season, or that whoever gets more stuff wins?

In many families, parents have learned to limit the number of gifts each person gets — in mine, each kid gets one big gift, and then three smaller gifts such as a DVD, a pair of cute winter pajamas, and a game to play or a book to read. We’ve done this for years, and no one complains.

4. Set boundaries.

A lot of people stress out over family relationships during the holidays. If you’re one of those people, you need to decide ahead of time how you’re going to deal with family members who aggravate you. Got a non-Pagan family member who just won’t leave you alone?

5. Decompress.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed in the middle of the season, and you know you still have things that need to get done, take a break. Turn off the phone, shut the door, and go have some Me Time. Take a one-hour power nap, enjoy a bubble bath with some nice scented candles, invite a friend out for a quick coffee date. Set aside a few minutes each day to meditate and get yourself grounded. You’ll appreciate it in the long run.

6. Recognize burnout.

A big problem many people seem to have is they just fail to realize they’re burning themselves out. Stress creeps up on us, and then we tend to justify it by saying, “Well, it’s the holidays.” Learn to recognize the signs of burnout, and react accordingly. Some signs include:

Depleted levels of physical energy

Lowered immune system, feeling run-down or ill

Lack of interest in things that you normally enjoy

Decreased sex drive

Negative, pessimistic outlook

Anger directed at people who don’t deserve it, like kids and sales clerks

If you start seeing these behaviors in yourself, it’s time to take a step back and recognize that you’re stressing out. Now that you’ve discovered the problem, take time to fix it, so that you and the people around you can have a happy and healthy Yule season.

The Witches Magick for the 18th Day of December – Yule Sun Ritual

Yule Comments & Graphics

Yule Sun Ritual

You will need:

A candle to represent the sun — it can be a large candle, or one that is yellow, red, gold, or orange

Something with which to inscribe the candle— either your athame or a small knife, or even a toothpick or a needle

7 small candles, either birthday candles or tea lights, to represent the 7 other festivals of the Wheel of the Year

A piece of paper, coloring pencils or pens, and scissors

Sit somewhere comfortable with the candles in front of you. Arrange the smaller candles in a circle, leaving a space in the center for the sun candle. Take the sun candle and inscribe images of the sun into the wax. As you do this, chant:

Welcome sun, light reborn.

In thanks this candle I now adorn.

When you have worked your candle, place it in the center of the ring of smaller candles. Light the sun candle with the words:

Return of the Sun, the darkness is gone.

Light each of the seven small candles from the sun candle, saying with each one:

Blessed be!

Spend some time focusing on the sun candle and its place within the Wheel of the Year that you have created around it. Think of the light returning to the world and to your own life, spreading its warmth and energy into everything. Then take your paper and draw an image of the sun. Make it bold and bright by coloring it in. Cut out the shape carefully and write on the back of it:

“The sun has returned, so mote it be!”

Hold your paper sun aloft to the sun candle and say:

I create this sun with thanks and blessings.

If you can, allow your candles to burn down, or extinguish them with thanks. Relight the sun candle over the next few days to allow the magic of the returning sun to be part of your life. Use your paper sun as a focus for your Yule magic. Attach it to your Yule log or thread it with ribbon and hang it on your Yule tree to celebrate the festive season.

Setting Up Your Yule Altar

Yule Comments & Graphics

Setting Up Your Yule Altar

Yule is the time of year when Pagans around the world celebrate the Winter Solstice. If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, this will be on or around December 21, but if you’re below the Equator, your Yule celebration will fall in June. This Sabbat is considered the longest night of the year, and following Yule, the sun begins its long journey back to earth. Try some or even all of these ideas — obviously, space may be a limiting factor for some, but use what calls to you most.

Colors of the Season:

Winter is here, and even if the snow hasn’t fallen yet, there’s a definite chill in the air. Use cold colors to decorate your altar, such as blues and silvers and whites. Also find ways to include the reds, whites and greens of the season. Evergreen boughs never go out of style, so add some dark greens as well. Cover your altar with a cloth in a cool color, and then add candles in a variety of different wintery shades. Use candles in silvers and golds — and sparkle is always good too!

Symbols of Winter:

Yule is a Sabbat that reflects the return of the sun, so add solar symbols to your altar.

Gold discs, yellow candles, anything bright and shiny can represent the sun. Some people even get a large pillar candle, inscribe it with solar symbols, and designate it as their sun candle. You can also add evergreen boughs, sprigs of holly, pinecones, a Yule log, and even Santa Claus. Consider antlers or reindeer, along with other symbols of fertility.

Other Signs of the Season:

There’s no limit to the number of things you can put on your Yule altar, as long as you’ve got the space.

Consider some of these items as part of your Sabbat decor:

Fruit and nuts

Mistletoe

Snowflakes, icicles, even a bowl of snow

Candy canes

Bells

“That Old Black Magick”

Winter

“That Old Black Magick”

Black magick doesn’t always involve the ritual of casting a spell. Many people perform black magick without even realizing it. If, in the heat of the moment, you curse someone or wish something bad to happen to him, you’re doing black magick, whether you realize it or not!

Skye Alexander, The Everything Wicca and Witchcraft Book: Rituals, spells, and sacred objects for everyday magick (Everything®)

Let’s Talk Witch – Ethical Spell-Casting

animals in winter

Ethical Spell-Casting

Whether simple or complex, all spells involve focusing the power of intention to produce outcomes. Your intention not only provides the fuel that energizes a spell, it also colors the spell. Your motive for doing a spell determines whether it’s “white” or “black” magick, or somewhere in between.

There’s nothing wrong with doing “gray” spells most spells, in fact, fit into this category. It’s not incorrect or selfish to use your magickal talents to improve your lot in life. However, a wise witch always examines her reasons for casting a spell before she takes any action. Sometimes the only difference between a gray and black spell is your intention. Let’s say, for example, you want a certain job. It’s logical to do a spell to improve your chances of landing the position you desire. But if your spell intentionally causes someone else to lose the job so you can take over, that’s black magick.

It’s also important to feel good about the spells you do. Witches have different opinions and preferences when it comes to working magick, and although certain practices may not be wrong, they might not be right for you. For instance, some witches engage in sex magick, but it’s not for everyone. Stay within your own comfort zone.

Witches subscribe to a few general guidelines that constitute morally responsible spells. Here are the basic spellcraft “don’ts.”

Don’t design a spell that might harm another person or interfere with his free will.

Don’t cast a spell that includes components or methods that violate your own personal taboos or ethics.

Don’t work with languages or symbolic items that you don’t fully understand.

Don’t do spells if you are ill, angry, or otherwise off-center, as this can affect the outcome dramatically.

If you follow these simple guidelines, you’ll avoid the problems, pitfalls, and unpleasant ramifications that can sometimes accompany spell-casting.

Festival of Epona, Mesa de Gallo

This was another of the festivals dedicated to the Celtic horse Goddess, Epona. Her worship was most popular in eastern ern Gaul and on the German frontier. So popular was Epona that she was honored with festivals in Rome, which was unique for a Gaulish deity. Epona was sometimes associated with the Celtic Mother Goddesses, and in Germany she was portrayed as a triple Mother Goddess.

An annual festival in the Philippines, Mesa de Gallo begins gins at sunrise when the people take to the streets with every imaginable noisemaker in existence. The parades of people clanking, banging, and hooting are believed to frighten away the evil spirits that may linger and thus affect future crops and harvest.

Friday’s Witchery

Love magick is a perennial popular topic. However, there is more to this topic than meets the eye. There are many enchanting layers here for us to explore on this day of the week. What about creating a loving home, or producing a loving and nurturing family? What about keeping your intimate relationships vital and on track? How about promoting happy, healthy, and enduring friendships? See, there is more to be considered than just the “You shall be mine…” type of fictional love spell.

Don’t forget that many of the deities associated with Fridays are also parents. So, yes, while this is the day to work on romance, sex, and love spells, there is additional magick to be considered here, which makes Fridays a more well-rounded and bigger opportunity for witchery than many folks ever truly realize. The truest, strongest magick always comes from the heart.
