Beliefs and Practices of Modern-day Witches

Modern-day witches have an extensive range of beliefs and practices. On the other hand, there are distinct principles, which came from Gardnerian Wicca although traditional witchcraft beliefs and practices are diverse.

Some of the beliefs of modern-day witches include:
– Developing natural gifts for occult magic or divination
– The Goddess is the focus of worship
– Everyone has a spiritual path to follow
– Everyone is innately divine
– Natural or divine forces are called forth in rituals
– The earth and nature are sacred representations of the Goddess
-Rituals are associated with the moon phases and the seasons
– Visualization, meditation, invocation, burning candles and chanting reinforce the religion’s core belief

More often than not, these beliefs and practices are combined with doctrines from other groups such as mystical traditions, ancient Egyptian spirituality, Native American spiritual practices, Celtic/ Norse paganism, Eastern Shamanism, and Greek and Roman goddess worship. Just like Wicca, these groups also have significant reverence in nature and peace. They likewise believe that human beings will always be at peace when they are in harmony with nature.

Modern-day witches also make use of divination methods and tools including astrology, tarot cards, the I Ching, candle magick, psychic readings, runes, and other mystical practices, which are encouraged by most witchcraft covens.

Wiccans believe the serpent as a symbol of female spiritual power and eternal life. This aspect makes Wicca comparable to Hinduism as the followers of the latter also practice meditation as a way of enlightenment from the power referred to as the serpent power.

True witches also make use of other symbols including the Ankh, which is an Egyptian cross-like symbol associated with (the goddess) Isis worship; pentagram and pentacle, which is a five-pointed star used for spells, protection, and conjuring among others; crystals, which are believed to have spiritual and healing properties; and the crescent moon, which is considered as a symbol of the Goddess.

On the other hand, true witches do not believe in forgiveness since that they do not believe in sin. When there is no sin, there is no need for forgiveness. In the same way, witches do not believe in salvation given that there is nothing to be redeemed from.

When it comes to matters of afterlife, different covens and witchcraft groups vary in their positions. In general witches do not have a concept of heaven or hell. Most witches believe in endless reincarnation and the law of karma. These witches believe that reincarnation will occur incessantly until an individual is enlightened sufficiently to move on to another kind of existence.

The beliefs of true witches and Wiccans are in agreement with most humanist religions, which are common in many modern societies. Witches and Wiccans believe they are free to do anything as long as their action do not oppose the higher power. They disagree with having an absolute truth. Furthermore, witches and Wiccans are insulted when they are told of the existence of evil on Earth and that everyone commits sins.

Let’s Talk Witch – Modern-day Witches

Based on tradition, there are more male witches (yes, witches not warlocks) than females in some societies. Today, however, females dominate Witchcraft and Wicca, although the religion is not only for women.

Based on the studies, modern witches began to emerge through Gerald Gardner, and English archaeologist with a broad background in the Occult. He learned the secrets of the Malaysian magical knife while he lived in Southeast Asia. He then became a nudist and a Mason. When he returned to England in 1939, he became a member of the Corona Fellowship of Rosicrucians. He met Dorothy Clutterbuck, who introduced him to witchcraft.

Gardner wrote the book, “Witchcraft Today,” which implied that he did not come across a pre-existing coven. In addition, Gardner also wrote a paper that was published in Ripley’s Believe It or Not. He disclosed that he acquired his magical resources and some Western magical texts in Asia. In his paper, Gardner also disclosed that he created a new religion, which is primarily focused on the worship of the Mother Goddess.
From there, the focus of modern witchcraft is on the worship of the Mother Goddess as initiated by Gardner. His beliefs and writings were significantly influenced by Freemasonry, Theosophy, ritual and sex magic, and other occult sources resulting in the emergence of modern-day Witchcraft or Wicca.

September 13 and 14

All Souls’ Day/Festival of Jupiter Optimus Maximus

All Souls’ Day in Egypt was a festive occasion. Held in honor of the Goddess Nephthys, Mistress of the Palace, it honored the spirits of the dead. There most certainly would have been a royal procession among the common people, followed by a public ritual and the Ceremony of Lighting the Fire. All the other activities would have taken place in the temple that was accessible only to the priesthood of Nephthys and the royal family.

Jupiter Optimus Maximus (“Jupiter Best and Greatest”) is the supreme Roman God. He was worshiped above all other Gods. The Ludi Romani games took place in September, with a special festival on September 13. The farmers’ harvested fields and orchards demanded little attention, the military campaigns paigns would be coming to a close with the soldiers coming home, and the populace was in a serious mood for “fun.” On the Ides of September 13, Jupiter received a sacrifice of a white ox in gratitude for an abundant harvest and successful battle. This would have been followed by notorious Coliseum games that somehow seem to eclipse the significant religious character of the Roman Empire.

The Wicca Book of Days for Sunday, September 13th

Complicated Kannaz

The runic half-month assigned to Kannaz (which is also known as Kenaz, Kano or Cen) begins today, with its last day falling on September 27th. Exactly how this rune should be interpreted is uclear: runic scholars agree that it seems to suggest the idea of burning, but opinion is divided between the positive meaning of a flaming torch or the light of illumination and the negative connotation of a burning pain or fever, such as that induced by an ulcer, abscess, or infection. As Kano, this rune may furthermore point to the sacred vehicle associated with the Danish earth goddess Nerthus.

Magical Mandrake

If you can, procure some dried mandrake today. Sacred to Mercury, today’s planetary ruler, this emblem of the enchantress Circe is believed to contain the essence of magick itself, while its narcotic properties may be exploited by very skilled healers.

Daily Magickal Applications for Sunday, September 13th

The Latin term for Sunday, our first day of the week, is Dies Solis (“sun’s day”). In ancient Greek, it was called Hemera Heliou. In the Old English language, it was known as Sunnandaeg; in Middle English, Sonenday. All of these titles mean the same thing: the day of the sun.

What do you think of when you feel the sun shine down on you? What sorts of enchantments and energies do you think would be complementary to a day named after our closest star? Sunday brings those bright solar energies into your life and has the magickal correspondences of success, promotion, leadership, pride, light, generosity, warmth, fitness, and personal growth. Astrologically, the sun symbolizes the conscious self and rules the zodiac sign of Leo.

The charms and spells that would complement this magickal day of the sun are ones for personal achievements of any kind-such as if you are seeking fame and wealth, working for that much-deserved promotion at work, or being acknowledged for a job well done. Health issues, increasing personal power, or simply sticking to your diet and being proud of what you have accomplished all fall under the sun’s golden influence.

Those ambitious, successful spells and charms will be heightened by working on the day of the week that has the planetary influence of the sun. So light those sunny candles, wear some luminous colors, and break out the gold jewelry! Bake up some cinnamon rolls or low-fat cinnamon muffins for an enchanting family breakfast. Take an orange with you to eat at lunch today. Try using a little magickal aromatherapy and burn some cinnamon-scented incense to encourage success and wealth today. Make the talisman to keep your solar magick with you. Sprinkle some dried marigold petals around your house-or across the threshold-to pull triumph and protection toward you and your family.

Get outside and tip up your face to the sun. Take a walk outside, and soak up some sunshine! Acknowledge the power of Sunna or Helios as they blaze across the sky and bring courage and motivation into your life. Sit outside at sunrise on a Sunday morning and bask in its warm, rosy-golden glow Acknowledge Brigid as the inner, creative spark of imagination and inspiration. She can help these gifts burn brightly within your own soul. Use your imagination and create your own brand of witchery and magick. Here comes the sun, and it’s your turn to shine!

Sunday

Ruler: Sun

Colors: Gold or yellow

Power Hours: Sunrise and sunset.

Key Words: Love, happiness, health, wealth

It is easy to spot the ruler of this day by its name. Sunday is the day of the sun. Community work, volunteer services, exercise, outdoor sports, buying, selling, speculating, meeting people, anything involving groups, running fairs and raffles, growing crops and taking care of all health matters fall under the influence of the Sun. With all this activity and the brightness of the sun, it’s easy to see why the child that is born on the Sabbath day is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.

Michael is the primary angel of Sunday but each hour of this day also has it’s secondary angel. These angels are Michael (first hour), Anael (second hour), Raphael (third hour), Gabril (fourth hour), Cassiel (fifth hour), Sachiel (sixth hour), Samael (seventh hour), Michael (eighth hour), Anael (ninth hour), Raphael (tenth hour), Gabriel (eleventh hour), and Cassiel twelfth hour). Notice some of the angels do double duty this day.
On Sundays, (unless you are invoking a specific angelic energy) the hour of sunrise will be the most powerful time to work, especially if you want to infuse energy into your work. Sunset is the second best time and is favored when you need to calm down a situation. Check the local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine your local sunrise.

Goddess Touch

Laying on the earth,
I look upward to the skies.
Watching the clouds roll by,
I see a vision.
A crack in the clouds,
A light pours through.
The cracked clouds part,
And exposes the image.
A woman of pure beauty,
Of strength and wisdom too.
The power of her presence
Is incredibly fulfilling.
The glowing of her aura
Shines rays of love upon me.
Looking in her eyes,
I see my destiny.
She leads me to a place
Deep within myself.
A place I now often go,
To find solitude.
