Kitchen Cures

Whenever I have any sort of ache, pain, illness, or other ailment – I look to see if I can fix the problem with something in my kitchen.

Why would I do that?

For a lot of reasons really.

* I hate making an extra trip to the store.

* Drugs are expensive. Even the over the counter stuff. We get sick so rarely, I hate buying stuff that’s just going to sit in the cabinet.

* Drugs are chemicals, and many times have a side effect that you don’t want.

You have to eat anyway – why not eat foods that will help solve your problem?

Say you’re coming down with a cold – you’ll want to eat more fruit, drink orange juice, eat salad and chicken soup, drink green tea, take an extra vitamin C, and get a good nights sleep, right?

What’s the first thing you do when you feel like you’re getting a kidney infection? Drink cranberry juice, right?

How about when you have diarrhea? You eat bananas, right?

If you have a headache, the first question you ask yourself is “When did I eat last?” (Actually you should try a glass of water first. You might just be dehydrated.)

We do this stuff all the time, don’t we? But did you know that you can solve most of your health problems with food?

I woke up this morning feeling like I have a bit of tendinitis. I know that’s an inflammation, so I go and look up foods to eat to help prevent disease.

Apples, blueberries, cloves, cranberries, curry, ginger, honey, lemon, mustard, onion, pineapple, raspberries, turmeric, black tea, green tea, red wine.”

Aspirin is also an anti-inflammatory, as well as a pain reliever – so if it gets worse I will take a couple aspirins. I also know that I want to stay away from foods that can actually cause inflammation like milk and whole wheat.

You can eat foods to help your asthma, arthritis, blood pressure, cancer, and other diseases and ailments. Now, I’m not saying to quit taking your medications. I am saying that when you eat the right foods, in time your doctor may be able to decrease your prescriptions. The worst that can happen is you’ll just feel better. The best that can happen? You’ll not only feel great, but you’ll save thousands of dollars too.

Why is Green Tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world, second only to water itself?

Why is green tea is the most popular health drink on the planet?

How has green tea has influenced the lifestyles, politics and temperament of world superpowers, including United States, China, Japan and Britain.

1.  Green tea is the king of teas:

There are many different kinds of tea including: green tea, black tea, white tea, and oolong. They all start out as green leaves from the Camielia sinensis plant.

The only difference is which part of the plant is used, where and how it grows and how it is processed. Oolong teas have perhaps the most extensive tastes, green tea and enhansed green tea has the most benefits for the least cost.

2.  Green tea helps you lose weight.

The International Journal of Obesity cites green tea as having polyphenols which produce extra heat in the body and burn calories.

Weight loss experts and dietians agree that this promotion of thermogenesis will help dieters lose pounds.

3.  Green tea has possible benefits for cancer.

The Journal of the National Cancer Institute published study in 1994 indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent.

4.  Green tea has possible benefits for heart disease.

Research shows that research indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.

One of the beneficial compounds in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant which inhibits the growth of cancer cells, and kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue.

EGCG is twice as powerful an anti-oxidant as resveratrol, a polyphenol found in grapes and wine and which is speculated to protect the French from their high fat diet.

5. Green Tea Cleanses the Body and the Soul

Green Tea originated as a large tree growing in the Himalayan jungles.

It was cultured into the short bushes grown throughout the world now, by Chinese monks who had discovered its many benefits.

The Taoists claimed green tea as an important ingredient of the elixir of immortality.

The Buddhists used it extensively to prevent drowsiness during their long hours of meditation.

6.  Green Tea is MONEY:

In the twelfth century when China began exporting tea , TEA BRICKS became the often preferred form of currency. It was light, valuable and in desperate need you could even eat the bricks. Tea contains, along with its many other nutrients, small amounts of protein.

7.  Green Tea Transformed Japan’s Culture

Green Tea was said to be introduced into Japan in 1191 by the monk Eisaid when he returned to Japan with Buddhism. The cult of tea began after Eisai helped cure the famous shogun of Japan Minamoto.

The whole culture of the country evolved around the Japanese Tea Ceremony which uses very finely ground green tea leaves in an elaborate ceremony lasting many hours.

The Tea Ceremony was a worship of the art of life,  an appreciation of refinement and purity, a process to go beyond the dreary waste of existence.

8.  Green Tea Transformed British Culture

In Britain, tea rapidly replaced much of the beer, ale and alcohol consumption with a beverage that was actually good for you. The British were transformed from an aggressive, meat and bear drinking mass to a more gentle, civilized people.

For the middle class of Britain, the tea parties and tea gardens allowed women and children to get out and socialize for the first time in their history. Many movements such as missionaries, charities and the girl guides started as tea groups.

For the lower class of Britain, tea breaks made life bearable –  the tea gave them energy and a lift of spirits which other beverages could not. They spent HALF their food budget on tea (and sugar to put in it) for good reason.

9.  Green Tea is Patriotic.

For Americans,  tea is a reminder of the Boston Tea Party,  a key event in the the American Revolution. Americans resisted  the taxation by the British of tea and other goods without representation. This resistance was symbolized by throwing a shipload of black tea into the Boston harbour.

10.  Green Tea is Loved By Everyone:

You Will Need:

2 tablespoons nettle

1 1/2 teaspoons St. John’s Wort

4 1/2 teaspoons oat straw

1 1/2 teaspoons skullcap

4 1/2 teaspoons chamomile flowers

1 1/2 teaspoon passion-flower

Combine the ingredients throughly and place three tablespoons of the mixture in the filter cup of the coffee maker. Add a full pot of water. As the tea brews and drips into the pot, chant:

Herbs, mix your energies

And flow now into harmony

To soothe and calm and bring new peace

With every sip I take of thee.

Drink the tea hot or over ice. Sweeten with honey.

When it comes to antibacterial agents, natural medicine really shines. While there are hundreds of natural antibiotics of varying degrees of strength, here are some of my faves:

Oregano Oil—The King of natural antibiotics, study after study proves the effectiveness of oregano oil. Of course, like anything, product strength can vary drastically. Some products are actually marjoram and not oregano at all. So, choose a reputable brand backed by research. I like North American Herb and Spice Company’s blend called P-73, which includes wild, high potency oregano harvested in harsh conditions. That might not sound like a big deal but harsh conditions usually spell stronger active ingredients in the plant, since the health-building phytochemicals frequently comprise the plant’s immune system.

Three volumes of research by Paul Belaiche found that oregano oil killed 96% of all pneumococcus bacteria, 92% of all neisseria, proteus, and staphylococcus bacteria. Some strains of neisseria are responsible for diseases like gonorrhea or meningitis. Proteus is a type of intestinal infection, and staphylococcus is the culprit in some types of food poisoning. Oregano oil eliminated 83% of streptococcus and 78% of enterococcus, which are linked with strep throat, scarlet fever, rheumatic fever, toxic shock syndrome, cystitis, wound infections, and anorexia.

Olive Leaf Extract—Olive leaf, like many other natural antibiotics, is also a good antiviral, making it an excellent choice when the nature of the microbe is not completely known. Drs. O. and B. Lee at the Department of Biomedical Science at CHA University in Korea, found that olive leaf extract was potent against various microbes. Additionally, their research showed olive leaf exhibited free radical scavenging abilities. Free radicals are linked with aging and disease.

Garlic—A natural antibiotic, antifungal, and antiviral agent, garlic is a great addition to your diet, particularly at this time of year. While garlic contains potassium and germanium, two minerals that are critical to good health, it is best known for its sulphur compounds, particularly allicin. These are the main phytochemicals that boost immunity and act as natural antibiotics. So, ladies and gentlemen, start chopping—garlic that is. It’s time to throw some fresh garlic into your favorite soup, stew, chilli, stirfry, meat or veggie dish. Forget garlic powder. Most of its health benefits are long gone.

Green tea—One of the active ingredients in green tea, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), has been identified in research as an effective agent against certain strains of oral bacteria. Since green tea has many other health benefits, including an impressive ability to break down excess fat in the body, it’s a great natural antibiotic to add to your daily diet. For best results, be sure to swish it around in your mouth.

Botanical: Ceanothus Americanus (LINN.)
Family: N.O. Rhamnaceae

—Synonyms—New Jersey Tea. Wild Snowball.
—Parts Used—Root or bark of the root.
—Habitat—North America.


—History—This is a half-hardy shrub growing to 4 or 5 feet high. It has downy leaves and stems and small ornamental white flowers in great numbers, coming into bloom June or July, followed by bluntly triangular seedvessels. It is usually called ‘New Jersey Tea’ in America because its leaves were used as a substitute for tea during the War of Independence. In Canada it is used to dye wool a cinnamon colour. It takes its name from its large red roots. Its wood is tough, pale brown red, with fine rays – taste bitter and astringent with no odour. Fracture hard, tough, splintering. Its bark is brittle, dark-coloured and thin.

—Constituents—The leaves are said to contain tannin, a soft resin and bitter extract, a green colouring matter similar to green tea in colour and taste, gum a volatile substance, lignin, and a principle called Ceanothine.

—Medicinal Action and Uses—Astringent, antispasmodic, anti-syphilitic expectorant and sedative, used in asthma, chronic bronchitis, whooping-cough, consumption, and dysentery; also as a mouth-wash and gargle, and as an injection in gonorrhoea, gleet and leucorrhoea.

—Dosages—Of the decoction, 1/2 OZ. Fluid extract, 1 to 30 drops.

—Other Species—Mexican Ceanothus azurea (Desf.), a powerful febrifuge.
