Lughnasadh Ritual Tools, Symbols, and Decorations

Altar Decorations: Gold or yellow altar cloth; gold altar candles; four ears of corn, each tied with a yellow and orange ribbon; small basket of fruit; gold-colored pillar candle; chalice covered with a yellow cloth; red and white wine; cornbread or ritual cakes.

Symbols: Corn; bread and all baked goods; the pentacle; the hearth, broom, and things connected with the home; baskets filled with corn and fresh vegetables; gift baskets filled with fresh baked goods and tied with gold ribbons; dried corn husks for making corn dollies.

The primary function of ritual is to worship—to celebrate and to connect with the divine. Don’t try do perform a ritual unless you’re working a precise spell. You see…the gods aren’t going to care whether your altar cloth is an old sheet or an intricately embroidered cloth, as long as it’s clean and you have the right the energy. (It’s wonderful to have coordinated altar supplies and make everything “just so,” but if you have to substitute in order to make things right then do so.)

It’s also important to use your common sense in the spiritual realm. Don’t start invoking fire and water goddesses in the same breath or the same ritual. Don’t joke around with ritual objects—they are sacred, even if the ritual is lighthearted.

When invoking deities you should know something about them. When you raise magickal energy, have a focus for it—if you let it drift, you’re going to get yourself into trouble, because magickal energy seeks out that which needs to be done, voids that need to be filled.

Before you start, always plan your actions. Extrapolate on what “could” happen and adjust that which needs adjusting. Sometimes bad things could happen and it’s better to be prepared. Your goal is to enjoy your rituals, to have fun celebrating the holidays, to show respect and reverences.

Magickal Tip 387 – 'Leave It To The Leaves'

Leave It To The Leaves

Looking for a low-cost way to make your living space more stylish and magickal this fall? Add a few leaf-inspired touches to your décor and let Nature’s autumn beauty shine indoors. Fill a glass bowl with colorful leaves chosen for their magickal attributes and use as a table decoration to bring a special atmosphere to your gatherings. Tuck fresh autumn leaves into napkin rings to add pizzazz and natural power to your dining room. To make an autumn-themed altar cloth, dip leaves in paint and drop them onto a large piece of fabric to create a pattern; carefully press the leaves flat then slowly peel off.

Spell to Banish Personal Negativity

Spell to Banish Personal Negativity

We have all from time to time experienced feelings and thoughts that there is a negative force around us. To banish these feelings you will need the bowl of water and the salt. Sprinkle some salt on the altar cloth and, using your finger or your Athame, say,

“I bless this salt to make it fit for these my rites. Blessed Be.”

Now add a little salt to the water and hold the bowl up towards the sky. Visualize your past relative being present and say

“I ask … (say the relative’s name) to let this bowl be the receiver of all my negativity, so that I can cleanse myself and became whole again once more. Blessed Be.”

Place the bowl down safely, dip the fingers and thumbs of both hands into the water, and visualize all your negative thoughts and feelings moving through your body, down through your arms and out of your hands into the water. As you do this be aware of yourself becoming lighter, of losing the weight that has been on your mind.

When you are sure that this is completed, remove your hands, shaking the last drops of water from them into the bowl. Take a moment to centre yourself once more, and again, holding the bowl up, say,

“I ask … (say the late relative’s name), to take this negativity through their power of the Elements to keep me safe in their hands. Blessed Be.”

Now throw away the contaminated water into the earth, but not near any plants that you are trying to grow, or down the drain.
