Magical Principles

Magic is natural.

Harm none- not even yourself- through its use.

Magic requires effort. You will receive what you put into it.

Magic is not usually instantaneous. Spells require time to be effective.

Magic should not be performed for pay.

Magic should not be used in jest or to inflate your ego.

Magic can be worked for your own gain, but only if it harms none.

Magic is a divine act.

Magic can be used for defense but should never be used for attack.

Magic is knowledge – not only of its way and laws, but also of its effectiveness. Do not beleieve that magic works – Know It.

Magic is love. All magic schould be performed out of love. The moment anger or hatred tinges your magic you have crossed the border into a dangerous world, one that will ultimately consume you.

The Witches’ Creed

Hear now the words of the witches, the secrets we hid in the night, when dark was our destiny’s pathway, that now we bring forth into the light. Mysterious Water and fire, the Earth and the wide ranging Air, by hidden quintessence we know them, and will keep silent and dare. The birth and rebirth of all nature, the passing of winter and spring, we share with the life universal, rejoice in the magical ring. Four times in the year the Great Sabbat returns and the witches are seen at Lammas and Candlemas dancing, on May Eve and old Hallowe’en. When day time and night time are equal, when sun is at greatest and least, the four lesser Sabbats are summoned, again witches gather in feast.Thirteen silver moons in a year are, thirteen is the coven’s array.Thirteen times at Esbat make merry, for each golden year and a day.The power was passed down the ages, each time between woman and man, each century unto the other, ere time and ages began. When drawn is the magical circle, by sword or athame of power, it’s compass between the two worlds lies, in the land of shades that hour. This world has no right to know it, and the world beyond will tell naught. The oldest of Gods are invoked there, the great Work of Magic is wrought. For two are the mystical pillars, that stand at the gate of the shrine, and two are the powers of nature, the forms and the forces of the divine. The dark and the light in succession, the opposites each unto each, Shown forth as a God and a Goddess: this did our ancestors teach.By night he’s the wild wind’s rider, the Horned One, the Lord of the Shades. By day he is the King of the Woodland, the dweller in green forest glades. She is yoputhful or old as she pleases, she sails the torn clouds in her barque, the bright silver lady of midnight, the crone who weaves spells in the dark. The master and mistressw of magic, they dwell in the deeps of the main, immortal and ever renewing, with power to free or to bind. So drink the good wine to the Old Gods, and dance and make love in their praise, till Elphames’s fair land shall receive us in peace at the end of our days. And ‘Do What Thou Wilt’ shall be the challenge, so be in love that harms none, for this is the only commandment, by magic of old, be it done!

Eight words the Witches’ Creed fulfill:
If It Harms None, Do What Thou Will!

Soft of eye and light of touch, Speak little, listen much. Deosil go by the waxing moon, chanting out the Witches’ Rune. Widdershins go by the waning moon, chanting out the baneful rune. When the Lady’s moon is new, kiss the hand to her, times two.

When the moon rides at her peak, then your hearts desire seek. Heed the North wind’s mighty gale, lock the door and drop the sail. When the wind comes from the South, love will kiss thee on the mouth. When the wind blows from the West, departed souls will have no rest.

When the wind blows from the East, expect the new and set the feast. Nine woods in the cauldron go, burn them fast and burn them slow. Elder be the Lady’s tree, burn it not or cursed you’ll be. When the Wheel begins to turn, let the Beltaine fires burn.

When the Wheel has turned to Yule, light the log and the Horned One rules. Heed ye flower, bush and tree, by the Lady, blessed be. Where the rippling waters go, cast a stone and truth you’ll know. When ye have a true need, hearken not to others’ greed.

Let’s Talk Witch – Who Can Do Magick?

Winter Images

Who Can Do Magick?

In most traditional societies, Witchcraft was the prerogative of a trained professional – Shaman, Medicine Man, Medicine Woman, Witch Doctor, Cunning Man, Wise Woman, Witch. These professional practitioners often inherited their ‘businesses’ from a mother or father. In some societies, they were people who had undergone a special spiritual crisis. They were chosen by the Gods and set apart. Their paths were for the chosen few and were not always thought desirable callings. Most people do not want to be set apart from their fellows by strangeness or by the ability to enter other worlds.

Traditional Witches often hold the view that Witches are born, not made. A contrasting attitude was that of magician Aleister Crowley. ‘Magick is for all,’ he wrote at the beginning of the twentieth century, ‘the Banker, the Pugilist, the Biologist, the Poet, the Navy, the Grocer, the Factory Girl, the Mathematician, the Stenographer, the Golfer, the Wife, the Consul – and all the rest – to fulfil themselves perfectly, each in his or her own proper function.” In modern times, attitudes amongst Witches have changed. This is why old Craft teachers started to bring outsiders into their traditions; not to be ‘professional Witches’ but to learn to integrate the magical arts into their everyday lives.

People often come into Wicca saying, ‘I’d like to be a Witch but I don’t know if I’d be any good at magic.’ Most Witches are better at some aspects of Wicca than others. It may be creating high magic ritual; it may be spellcraft or divination; it may be herb lore; it may be a deep spiritual love of the Gods. However, we can all develop some magical skills.

Many books about magic suggest that you must believe before you practice. This is not my experience. Magic can be approached in the same way as anything from acupuncture to riding a bicycle. Try it and see if it works. What is important is not unshakeable belief, but open-mindedness. If we decide we cannot do something or it will not work, then of course it will not. We will set up a resistance. It is a bit like fire walking. Providing we do it calmly and without fear, we will not burn ourselves. If we panic or do not believe in ourselves, we may fail.

Self-belief is an important aspect of Wicca. This does not mean we have to believe we are the greatest Witches in the universe. It does mean that we must believe it is permissible for nice things to happen to us. In our unstable society, many people have family backgrounds that leave them with feelings of low self-esteem. They feel unloved, unworthy and deserving only the worst. If we have these negative attitudes, then it is difficult to believe that our own magical energy can change our lives. To begin to feel empowered, we must start making small improvements in our lives. Having the will to do even the smallest thing to make our lives better will give us self-confidence and self-belief. Decorate a room that has always been drab. Go through your wardrobe and throwaway all the clothes that you never wear and which you know do not suit you. Wash the car, tidy the house, give yourself a treat – not a chocolate doughnut but something worthwhile – a trip to the countryside, a day off. Plant something beautiful, have a massage, go for a swim; anything that gives you enjoyment and is good for you. This may seem a strange way to begin magic, but these simple actions are ways of sending messages to our unconscious minds that we are worthy people, worthy of love. We can then allow magic to enter our lives.

Our attitude to magic must be similar to that required for spiritual healing. ‘Faith’ healing requires that the patient believes in the healer and his or her world view, religion, system, etc. Spiritual healing needs only that the patient be open to something happening. Interestingly, people often prefer to believe that nothing is happening, even when it is. In my spiritual healing practice, I have treated many a reluctant husband dragged along by his wife who was fed up of his complaints about a chronic illness. Having sat with gritted teeth for half an hour, swearing that nothing was happening, the husband would disappear, only to reappear again the next week for a follow-up session – this time alone. When asked if there had been any improvement, I would get a reluctant, ‘Well, a bit.’ It was always, ‘Well a bit’, until they stopped coming because they were cured.

Let’s Talk Witch – Ethical Spell-Casting

animals in winter

Ethical Spell-Casting

Whether simple or complex, all spells involve focusing the power of intention to produce outcomes. Your intention not only provides the fuel that energizes a spell, it also colors the spell. Your motive for doing a spell determines whether it’s “white” or “black” magick, or somewhere in between.

There’s nothing wrong with doing “gray” spells most spells, in fact, fit into this category. It’s not incorrect or selfish to use your magickal talents to improve your lot in life. However, a wise witch always examines her reasons for casting a spell before she takes any action. Sometimes the only difference between a gray and black spell is your intention. Let’s say, for example, you want a certain job. It’s logical to do a spell to improve your chances of landing the position you desire. But if your spell intentionally causes someone else to lose the job so you can take over, that’s black magick.

It’s also important to feel good about the spells you do. Witches have different opinions and preferences when it comes to working magick, and although certain practices may not be wrong, they might not be right for you. For instance, some witches engage in sex magick, but it’s not for everyone. Stay within your own comfort zone.

Witches subscribe to a few general guidelines that constitute morally responsible spells. Here are the basic spellcraft “don’ts.”

Don’t design a spell that might harm another person or interfere with his free will.

Don’t cast a spell that includes components or methods that violate your own personal taboos or ethics.

Don’t work with languages or symbolic items that you don’t fully understand.

Don’t do spells if you are ill, angry, or otherwise off-center, as this can affect the outcome dramatically.

If you follow these simple guidelines, you’ll avoid the problems, pitfalls, and unpleasant ramifications that can sometimes accompany spell-casting.

”Naked in Your Sight”

 “Naked in Your Sight”

If you want to do some “naked” magick but are too uncomfortable to stand around in your living room in your altogether, try doing this simple spell while in the bath or shower (where, presumably, you’ll be naked anyway):

Close your eyes and visualize your naked body in a waterfall or pond. See the water as the physical manifestation of the energy of the universe, and take in as much of that energy as you can hold. Then say, “As I was born, I am at this hour, fill my body with your power.”

Let’s Talk Witch – The Four Quarters

Winter

The Four Quarters

At the start of a ritual, we ask the four elements – Earth, Air, Fire and Water – to join us in circle. We call these the four quarters (for the four directions of north, east, south, and west), or watchtowers. towers. As the term watchtower suggests, we are asking them to protect and watch over us as we do our magick. This way, we can relax and concentrate on our Witchcraft instead of having to guard ourselves against negative energy or the like.

We also ask the watchtowers to lend us their assistance in our magickal work. As I mentioned in the section on elements (which, again, I know you have memorized), each element has certain aspects associated with it, such as air being the property that rules over intellect.

So, if you were going to do magick to help you succeed on an important test (in addition to studying hard, of course, not instead of studying at all), you might ask that quarter for particular help during your ritual.

Here is an example of a typical quarter call or invocation:

I call the watchtower of the north, the element of earth.

Come guard me in my circle, and keep me safe as I work my magickal craft.

Help me to stay grounded and centered, and lend me your strength.

Come now, and enter the circle. So mote it be.

Once we have completed our magickal work and are ready to open the circle, we dismiss the quarters. Don’t be misled by the terms calling and dismissing-we don’t actually try to boss the quarter powers around. After all, you don’t want to irk the power of water and have your toilet explode, now do you? Always invoke and dismiss the watchtowers respectfully, and say thank you when you are done. As Witches, we have the power to summon the elements, but hopefully we also have the wisdom to treat them with the awe and deference they deserve.

Fire Magick – Divining Candle Flames

Fire Magick – Divining Candle Flames

Anytime you light a candle for a magickal purpose, you can divine the wax, flame, and smoke patterns to interpret your answers. One simple but effective methods is to assign the candle right and left sides the correspond to yes and no. If the candle drips first to the left and you assigned that side to no, then your answer your answer is no.

Other methods call for watching the flame dance or the smoke spiral in a direction. If it dances to the west, you must watch your emotions. If it dances to the east, you must use your mental processes. Likewise, if it dances to the north, you will face a physical task, and if it dances to the south, you will have an intense experience of success.

If the flame burns high and strongly, the magick is working quickly and will be successful. If it is burning low and almost smothering itself out, you need to cleanse the entire area, including yourself, and rework the spell. If the flame is crackling, it means the magick has encountered opposition. If it burns mostly blue, it means you are connected to the divine. If it is sparking, it means to expect company.

If the soot around the candle turns the glass very black (like in a novena), it is thought to mean that someone has been thinking ill of you. A cleansing of the area should be performed. If the black soot is only around the top edge of the novena, it means that the magick has encountered opposition and may take a while to take effect.

If the smoke spirals toward you, the spell will work quickly. If it drifts away from you, you will have to persevere in order for your wish to be granted.

Some schools of thought teach to never blow out a candle flame, because it is rude to the elemental spirits of the fire. Others teach never to pinch them out. Likewise, some teach to never use matches and others say to use only matches. These are things you should decide for yourself, also, when employing candles for magick, always allow them to burn themselves out, if possible.

Fire Magick – Candle Magick

Fire Magick – Candle Magick

Fire magick is dramatic, entrancing, and magnificent. Fire Witches have a distinct preference for the more challengiing magickal tasks and full-fledged rituals. However, there are many simpler way to use fire magick.

Always follow common sense safety rules when working with fire.

Candle Magick

Primary to fire magick is the simple art of candle magick. When using candle magick, select a candle color that corresponds to your intent. There are many charts giving versions of candle correspondences, but te key to effective candle magick is to choose a color that you think suits the task. It’s best to search for your own set of color correspondences. If you end up using a recommended color that doesn’t calm you (if that is what is called for in the spell), how will it work to calm the universe?

Once you have selected the proper candle color, you must prepare the candle for magick:

1. Cleanse and consecrate the candle to the four elements.

2. Bless and anoint the candle with an appropriate oil.

3. Channel your magical intent into the candle. You may wish to bind it there with a ribbon or thread. Hair (even though it smells horrible when burnt) works very well to bind intent. You can carve symbols into the wax to further seal intent.

4. Light the candle. The flame releases the energy you programmed into it out into the universe to bring the desired change.

Herbs are often used in conjunction with candles to provide a little extra tra oomph. Specialty candles can also pack a powerful magical punch. Practitioners of Voodoo, Hoodoo, and Santeria make use of these in magic and in offerings.

Fire Witch Lore – The Phoenix

Fire Witch Lore

The Phoenix

The myths of the phoenix came about due to the natural solar eclipses and humanity’s inability to explain them in the past. The amazing part of these myths is that during an eclipse, one can see the pattern of the wings in the sun’s corona. The phoenix was called the bird of the sun.

The ancient Egyptians considered the phoenix to be an avatar of the sun god. When his life was over (which was originally estimated at 500 years and went up close to 100,000 years in later times), he would light himself on fire, only to be reborn from the ashes after a suitable resting period (also around 500 years). It was said that the fire smelled of cinnamon.

The spirit of the bird wraps its nest in myrrh and sacred leaves and molds it into the shape of an egg. It carries the egg to the temple of the sun god and flies away for its rest.

The phoenix was described as red and yellow, with a purple neck, and was considered the most magnificent bird. Only one phoenix was allowed to live at a time.

Not only could the ashes give renewed life to the phoenix, but they were reputed to bring humankind back from the dead as well. One emperor peror even dined on a bird of paradise as a substitute for the phoenix, hoping to achieve immortality, but he was murdered shortly after.

Ovid stated that the phoenix ate only frankincense and other odif- erous gums. It was further speculated by others that the phoenix hid from humankind intentionally.

The phoenix spans almost all mythologies and is a much-loved symbol of everlasting life. It is seen as a sign of peace and prosperity.

Fire Witch Lore – Lightning

Fire Witch Lore

Lightning

Lightning is a manifestation of fire in the air. Wielded by the gods as both a weapon and a messenger. lightning is nature’s fireworks. It is our basis for electricity.

Folklore relates that lightning never strikes in the same place twice. However, this is simply untrue. The Empire State Building was struck no less than sixty-eight times in a three-year span. Park rangers Roy Sullivan from Waynesboro, Virginia, holds the world record for being struck by lightning more than any person in history. Between 1942 and 1983 he was struck an astrounding seven times.

The ancient Romans thought that a lighning bolt striking from left to right was a sign of good fortune. If the bolt passed from right to left, it meant the gods were unhappy with current events.

It was believed that examining sites where lightning had struck would reveal lightning stones. Lightning stones are the small ax-shaped stones also called thunderstones and are thought to hold the magical properties of lightning. Temples were often erected on these sites, as they were considered sacred.

In various parts of the world, lightning is thought to take on the physical form of a bird. In some places this lightning bird is called the “bird of heaven.” It is described as iridescent.

If you see a flash of lightning, it is because the lightning bird has just darted across the sky. It is thought that if you destroy the nest of this bird, there will be a great storm. In general, taking any negative action against this bird is inviting misfortune. It is said that no person has ever succeeded in harming this bird, as it moves too quickly.

Lightning is predominantly thought to be born only from the sky, but in actuality it is the combination of a positive charge from the ground surging upward and the negative charge of the lightning surging downward that creates the electrical charge of lightning. Lightning strikes both ways.

Often, when lightning strikes the ground, it will fuse the minerals underneath into a rock formation. So the eggs of the lightning bird and Chango’s stones do indeed exist. The minerals present in the soil vary from region to region and determine the rock produced. When lightning strikes sand, it fuses the grains together to create natural glass.

Fire Witch Lore – Te Aurora Borealis and Other Natural Lights

Fire Witch Lore

Te Aurora Borealis and Other Natural Lights

Also known as the northern lights, the aurora borealis is nature’s primary light show. It is described as beautifully colored mists that weave and dance their way across the skies. These stunning lights are shared between fire and air, but are listed under fire because no light would exist if not for fire’s eternal source.

The northern lights are actually a gathering of solar-charged particles attracted to the Earth’s magnetic pull, but the Vikings believed the lights to be the spirits of dead maidens dancing. This belief crossed cultures, and the Native American tribes that lived in the extreme north also associated these lights with the realm of the dead. They believed that they could call these spirits forth by whistling.

In ancient times, some people were afraid of the lights. They saw them as ominous portents of war or famine. They thought that when the lights appeared, it meant the gods were angry.

Will-o’-the-wisps are the earthbound lights that guide travelers away from safety to walk along treacherous paths. They can be considered malevolent, and in the past were often thought to be the souls of the dead. They tend to appear on swampy lands and near graves.

Will-o’-the-wisps are most often described as floating orbs of light that can move about quickly. They have been reported in a wide range of colors. Many who experience the phenomenon say that the light mimics their movements and pace.

Currently explained as a glowing type of swamp gas, will-o’-the- wisps continue to make their presence known in various parts of the world. They are also called ghost lights, spooks lights, corpse candles, foxfire, fairy lights, and peg-o’-lanterns (or jack-o’-lanterns).

In North Carolina, at Brown Mountain, these lights are particularly active. The first recorded encounter with these mysterious lights was in 1771, by a German engineer. Later accounts related that these lights would chase travelers along the trails. Of all of nature’s eerie lights, the will-o’-the-wisps are the only ones credited with actually following people and having a seemingly coherent thought process.

In Irish folklore, the will-o’-the-wisps are described as being quiet and helpful. They appear in order to warn one of possible bad health for family members or loved ones.

While scientists say that will-o’-the-wisps are burning balls of swamp gas, they are known to be cold. They have also been reported to move against the wind, something a real gas cloud could not do.

They have also been called “ball lightning” and are said to explode and crackle with energy. Ball lightning has been credited with causing deaths. In 1638, ball lightning struck a church in Devon County in the United Kingdom, subsequently killing four people.

Often, ball lightning disappears as quickly as it appeared, leaving witnesses bewildered. Sometimes, an explosion is heard just after the light disappears.

St. Elmo’s Fire, on the other hand, is seen as a benevolent force of nature that guides sailors through treacherous areas and signals the end of storms. It is said to be the dead spirit of St. Erasmus returning to aid the sailors. St. Elmo’s Fire is actually a form of atmospheric electricity that appears during stormy weather.

Let’s Talk Witch – What Should We Use Magick for?

Winter Dream

What Should We Use Magick for?

Magic is a force, a power, a wisdom, a knowledge. It is both more and less powerful than the ignorant suppose. Magic can only change the changeable. It can cure a sickness; it cannot regrow a lost limb. In Wicca, magic is carried out according to strict ethics. For this reason, coven training takes a long time. Matches are not put into the hands of children, nor power into the hands of the untrained and untested. Magic is not a power we use in place of our other powers – mind, emotion, hand and limb. It is not a crutch for the weak, nor an ego-boost for the inadequate. It is a skill that we must learn to use wisely and well.

‘Wisely and well’ means in the right time and place, when other avenues on the material plane have been explored. Wicca teaches people sound ethical principles for the use of magic and encourages their spiritual development hand in hand with any powers that they wish to develop. This can be boring and frustrating to the would-be Witch who just wants to get on with it, but going through the boredom threshold is an aspect of any learning, be it playing a musical instrument or learning a language.

Most people do not come to Wicca seeking magical training in order to make a lot of money and gain power over others. There are much simpler ways of achieving this – become a lawyer or an accountant. The usual problem is not people wanting to do negative magic but the ‘astral bandage syndrome’: people wanting to use their new-found powers to put the world to rights. New Witches can easily become interfering nuisances, wanting to cure everyone of every illness, whether they want it or not.

Magic is a simple force but applying it skilfully is difficult. In seemingly simple situations, there can be many complex factors. Even if someone has asked for healing, there can be many barriers within the person that can prevent it. On one level, he or she may want to be well. On another level, the illness may be serving the individual in some way. It may bring attention to the neglected. It may be a way of hiding from a relationship, job or another aspect of life that someone finds untenable.

There is a traditional Witchcraft saying, ‘If it harms none, do what you will.’ Often there is long debate in covens about particular pieces of magical work. It is very important that if you are in a group you take time to check that everyone is happy with any piece of magic you are going to do. If people are half-hearted or have hidden resentments, firstly the magic is unlikely to work and secondly they will feel disempowered. When we enter into trance and do magic, there is not a total dissolving of the boundaries between ourselves and others, but there is a blurring of this distinction. To allow this to happen, we need to be able to love and trust those with whom we are working. This involves treating one another with mutual respect.

This is one of the reasons why traditionally covens are small, closed groups. To build bonds requires time and mutual knowledge. This cannot be achieved quickly; nor is it possible to have this type of loving relationship with everyone.

Some covens believe that you should not do magic for yourself and if someone in the group has requested help, he or she will not participate in the spell that gives it. In most covens, however, people can work for themselves providing the group thinks it is appropriate. There are a number of reasons why working for ourselves is not a good idea. One is the delusion of the ego and our own self-centredness. It is very easy for us to convince ourselves that what we want is right and appropriate. It takes long years of training for us to become objective about such things. This is one advantage of belonging to a group. If we take our problems to our group, they can be much more objective about them than we are and can advise us if it is appropriate to tackle them with magic or not.

Love is an important aspect of magic. This is not some New Age idea but a good Wiccan principle also found in modern psychology. The founder of the psychotherapeutic system of psychosynthesis, Italian psychologist Roberto Assagioli who had studied much esoteric teaching, wrote:

We must realize that love, in order to truly fulfil its mission of being helpful … must be allied to insight; even more, permeated and blended with wisdom; without understanding there cannot be harmlessness.

The same is true of magic. We must combine it with common sense, worldly wisdom and spiritual insight if it is to do its work. Magic is the power to change ourselves and to change society. For true magic we must want to reach out positively to something beyond the boundaries of the self. This emotion is love. Love operates on many different levels. There is the love of ourselves; the love of those close to us – parents, children, partners, siblings; the love for country and land; the love for humanity as a whole and the love for all creation – both the physical world of Nature and that which lies beyond – the realm of the Gods.

If we talk about love of country, people can become nervous, but this need not mean unthinking patriotism. It is good to respect our own culture and people but the dangers of nationalism are all too present in the world today. Perhaps we need to think of ourselves more as citizens (and tenants) of the Earth itself; that it is terrestrial and not national boundaries that define us. Wicca is less anthropocentric than monotheisms. These tend to believe that the universe was created for the benefit of human beings.

This is a bizarre bit of ego inflation if only we stop and think about it. If we truly love the land then we will love all its species and inhabitants. Loving the land is often a good deal easier than loving our fellow human beings, but it is through love of others that we learn to love the greater universe, both material and non-material. The interdependence of the universe is found at the heart of all Paganism (including Hinduism), within mysticism and in modern physics. The Divine is within us and we are part of the Divine. In coming to an understanding of this, we move into the realms of the Spirit.

Another way of reaching out emotionally is hate. Some traditional Witchcraft books and some feminist Witchcraft books advocate cursing. I have even seen a book written by a feminist academic which criticizes Wicca because it does not ’empower’ women to curse men, their patriarchal enemies. This is an extremely silly and irresponsible idea and can only be advocated by those who do not believe magic works. What is important to remember is that magic does work – both on the recipient and on the practitioner. Don’t be misled by such nonsense.

Magic is about the use of energy. It involves creating certain energies within ourselves and then sending them out into the world to do their work. It is easy enough to create negative energy. How many people have not cursed a driver who causes them to swerve in the road, or some inadvertent shopper who happens to tread on their foot in a busy store? A little anger can be therapeutic. We swear, curse and stamp our feet and feel a whole lot better. This harms no one. Accumulated anger and the negative energy build up needed to indulge in cursing will make us stressed and ill. People who brood and indulge in hate become hateful. As the psychologist Carl Jung said, we all become like the thing we hate. Nor can we do what we will with impunity. Magic operates according to Three-fold Law. The energy that we transmit returns to us but three times as strongly as before. In addition, there are checks and balances within the universe. The universe seeks equilibrium and harmony. If we create negative energy then the universe will choose at some point to short-circuit our efforts, with extremely unpleasant effects.

‘If it harms none do what you will’ sounds superficially easy, but it can be very difficult. Would you help someone attract an individual he or she had fallen in love with? Traditional Witchcraft abounds in love spells, but is it right to make someone fall in love with somebody when they would not otherwise? Will it lead to unhappiness because deep down the couple are not compatible? Love is more than superficial desire. Unrequited love can rarely be turned into happiness by the power of magic.

Another important principle is that magic must not be a refuge for the lazy. It is pointless to do magical work to help someone get a job if they are not doing what is necessary to find one. Another strange truth is that the longer people are Witches, the less active magic they do. This is because something happens along the way. Wicca teaches us to harmonize ourselves with the greater universe, so that with time the direct action of spell-making becomes less necessary. We learn to know what we really want and to be in the right place at the right time to get it. Experienced Witches find that simply by someone asking them to do something and their thinking about it, then the thing will often come to pass. The important steps have been the individual articulating his or her need and the Witch thinking of a successful outcome occuring.

One of the best parts of being a Witch is that there are hardly any rules. You gotta love that. Really, we only have one: An it harm none, do as ye will. So pretty much as long as what you do doesn’t hurt anyone (including yourself), it’s cool.

But there are a few things that are considered to be serious no-noes in the witchy world. They may not get you sent to hell (since Witches don’t actually believe in hell, the devil, or, for that matter, sin), but they could get you severely scolded by your witchy friends. (Or, worse yet, get your butt kicked by the karma police.)

So as you make your way through your day, keep in mind that you should NEVER, EVER:

• Cast a spell that will hurt anyone (see Rule #i, above).

• Cast a spell that interferes with another person’s free will (even if you are sure it will help them).

• “Out” someone as a Witch without asking them first-if you don’t know whether or not someone is out of the broom closet, do not mention their witchiness to anyone.

• Tell outsiders what goes on in your group rituals (unless it is okay with all members).

• Break circle during a ritual (this can scatter or burst the gathered energy with unpleasant effects). If it is necessary to leave mid-ritual, you should be “cut” out of circle.

• Pick up someone else’s witchy tools (athame, tarot cards, drums, etc.) without asking first. These tools become attuned to their user’s energy with repeated use, and some Witches don’t like to have their own energy diluted or contaminated by someone else’s.

• Cast a spell to make someone else love you. Not only does this interfere with free will, but it is likely to come back and bite you on the butt eventually. Seriously-I know it can be tempting, but just don’t do it. (You can cast a spell to make yourself open to love instead, which will only affect you, so it is okay.)

• Force someone to take part in a ritual or any other aspect of witchy life if they don’t want to. If your friends, relatives, or co-workers are meant to be Pagans, they’ll come to you when the time is right and they are ready. We want others to respect our spiritual beliefs-that means we have to do the same. (This is especially true for significant others. We all want to share our lives with someone who believes as we do, but sometimes we just have to settle for tolerance instead of agreement.)

• Talk to outsiders about a confidence shared with you in circle. We have a saying: “What’s said in circle stays in circle.” (Yeah, I know, those Vegas people stole it from us.) People need to know that if they bare their souls while passing the speaking stick-or at any other point during ritual-that whatever they talk about will stay in the safe space of circle and not show up as gossip in the outside world.

There are probably a few more that I am forgetting, but these are the biggies. Avoid these “nevers” and do harm to none, and you can practice your craft with a clear conscience and a happy heart.

Let’s Talk Witch – Elemental Connection

Elemental Connection

When practitioner speak of the elements, they’re not referring to the periodic table you learned about in school. They mean the four elements: air, fire, water, and earth. These elements are the energetic building blocks that make up our world. We’ll go into more detail and depth about the elements later on, but for now let’s just note their relationships with the four directions:

Air relates to the east.

Fire is associated with the south.

Water corresponds to the west.

Earth is linked with the north.

Each has its own connections with the zodiac signs, the suits of the tarot, spirits and angels, the tools a magician uses, and lots of other things. The more you get into magick, the more you’ll find yourself working with the elements.

Let’s Talk Witch – Feeling the Power

Feeling the Power

What power? Not the energy piped through your home, but the powers of magic— the forces of the elements and winds, the energy that keeps our planet spinning within our spinning galaxy within a spinning universe. This is the real energy of magic.

One of the best ways to gain a familiarity with this power is through memory. We have the power at all times; it is what keeps our body running and working properly. We take it in through the food we eat and release it in physical exertion, mental workings, and simple bodily functions like breathing and blinking our eyes.

Since this power is with us at all times, it sometimes makes its presence known.

Most people have experienced a thunderstorm. Jagged lightning glances across the sky, rain and wind slam down, and the sky shakes with tremendous thunder. Such a storm will often cause unexpected reactions.

A chill might shake you, both in anxiety and also in exhilaration of such a spectacular example of nature’s unlimited power.

If you can recall an especially powerful storm that sent a chill down your spine, attempt to recapture that feeling. Recall the time; remember your reactions to the storm.

You may begin to feel charged with energy. Your pulse and breathing may increase in rate, the muscles of your body may tense, and you may begin to perspire.

These physical changes are manifestations of the increased amount of energy surging through your body.

This is the same energy used in magic. As mentioned previously, much of the energy is generated by the emotion. Emotional reactions to situations can have amazing results (the weak woman who pushed a car off her child’s leg, for example) that seem to defy normal laws.

This isn’t the case. These power surges are manifestations of other laws of nature not yet discovered by science.

Since emotion is an excellent way in which to feel the power, a strong emotional reaction— such as that to a storm— is often beneficial to help the power begin flowing.

Obviously it would be ridiculous to stand and reexperience a thunderstorm before every spell. Simply use the thunderstorm exercise in order to feel the energy— the energy that manifests itself in tense muscles, increased respiration and heart rates, and perhaps perspiration.

Once you have felt it and can do so at will, you can generate power and send it off during your spells to work your need.

Any spell performed in such a state will be much more effective than one that was walked through.

Again, use the emotion of the need of the particular spell to attain this state. If you desperately need five hundred dollars for an unexpected, neglected, or forgotten bill, pour all of your concern into the spell. But back it up with your unshakeable knowledge that you can and will draw it to you.

All right, so it isn’t easy at first. As my piano teacher used to tell me, “Practice!”

Energy + Spells = Change

strega d'autunno

Energy + Spells = Change

When our own energy is concentrated and channeled, it can move the broader energy currents. The images and objects used in spells are the channels, the vessels through which our power is poured and by which it is shaped. When energy is directed into the images we visualize, it gradually manifests physical form and takes shape in the material world.

The White Witch’s Oath

In Life’s name, and for Life’s sake,

I say that I will use the

Art for nothing but the service of Life.

I will guard growth and ease pain.

I will fight to preserve what grows

and lives well in its own way;

and I will change no object

or creature unless its growth and life,

or that of the system of

which it is part, are threatened.

To these ends, in the practice of my

Art, I will put aside fear for courage,

and death for life, when it is right to do so

Consecrating Altar Objects

Consecrating Altar Objects

If you are not using completely new objects on your altar – here we are referring to the basic ‘furnishings’ of candle holders etc – you should cleanse them before you dedicate them to your purpose. Treat them in the same way as you would any crystals you use, by soaking them overnight in salt water to remove anyone else’s vibrations and then standing them in sunshine (or moonshine) for at least 12 hours to charge them with the appropriate energy.

When you are ready, hold each object and allow your own energy to flow into it, followed by the energy of your idea of Ultimate Power. (That way you make a very powerful link between yourself, the object and the Ultimate.) Ask this Power to bless the object and any working you may do with it and perceive yourself as truly a medium or channel for the energy.

Hopefully, each time you use any of the objects, you will immediately be able to reinforce that link rather than having to re-establish it. It is like a refrain continually running in the background. Now place the objects on your altar however it feels right for you.

Finally, if appropriate, create and caste your circle so that it includes yourself and your altar. The magic circle defines the ritual area, holds in personal power and shuts out all distractions and negative energies. You now have a sacred space set up which is your link to the powers that be. Again it is a matter of personal choice as to whether you choose to re-dedicate your altar and what it contains on a regular basis
