Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!

Since I took up the most of the morning talking, I thought we should make it up to you somehow. So we are stopping at the Horoscopes for the day and going to add some Imbolc information on the site. I figure Imbolc will lift anyone’s spirits or at least I hope it will. It is just amazing to me how fast this month has gone by. I looked at the calendar the other day and couldn’t believe it, only 5 (at the time) more days to Imbolc? Where or where has January gone! I felt bad we generally start putting information about the upcoming Sabbat on a few day in advance. So we are starting that today. I hope it is information you can use and as always we are going to do our best to try to find pages you can print out for your BOS.

It just seems like when Imbolc gets here, it is the most magickal time of the year. I am not a huge fan of Winter and when Imbolc arrives a spark ignites in my heart and soul. The reawakening of Mother Earth what a glorious time of the year. It means Spring is not that far off, we have survived another winter (even though they are calling for snow this weekend, YIKES!).  You can feel the Earth reawakening under your feet. The grass starts to grow little by little, the yellow lilies start to emerge and you know the Earth is coming back to life when you see your first red bird or cardinal. It is time to open the doors and raise the windows to get rid of some of old Man Winter who might be lingering around your house. It is time to renew not only your home but also yourself. You feel alive again, full of hope. I love Imbolc it is my favorite time of the year.

On Tuesday, January 30th, We Celebrate the Goddess Morrigan

Areas of Influence: The Goddess Morrigan represented the circle of life, she was associated with both birth and death.

Her name means great queen or phantom queen. It is spelt in several different ways including Morrigu, Morgane, Morrighan and Morgan le Fay in the Arthurian legends.

She is one of the triple Goddesses, her different aspects are represented by Anu (the fertility maiden), Badh (the boiling mother cauldron) and either Macha (the death crone) or Nemain.

Morrigan is also a water Goddess, ruling over rivers and lakes. In one myth she appears as an old washer woman at the ford and offering her love to Cu Chulainne. He failed to recognize Morrigan on this occasion and on several others. Enraged she threated to hinder him in battle, when he is killed as a result of this she appears on his shoulder as a crow.

This Goddess also grants monarchs the power of sovereignty.

Origins and Genealogy: I can find no mention of her parentage but in some myths she was said to be the consort of Dadga

Morrigan was also one of the Tuatha de Danann (The tribe of the Goddess Danu). She protected her people by blowing a fog over the land, the lack of visibility discouraged invading armies.

Strengths: Fearsome and strong.

Weaknesses: She is vindictive, killing the person she loves when he fails to recognize her.

Goddess Morrigan’s Symbolism
As a symbol of death the Goddess Morrigan is linked with the festival of Samhain.

Sacred Bird: Crows and ravens.

Sacred Plants: Mugwort, yew and willow.

Morrigan’s Archetypes

The Celtic Goddess Morrigan has several powerful archetypes.

Shape-Shifter:

The Shape Shifter has the ability to change her physical appearance. They are also able to adapt easily to different environments by altering there behavior.

Shadow Shape shifter is fickle, lacking conviction and constantly reinventing themselves, like politicians trying to appeal to more people.

Morrigan is a bird Goddess who shape-shifts into the form of a hooded crow and a washer woman at the ford.

The Crone:

The Crone represents the wise old woman whose child bearing days are behind her. Other associations with this Archetype include: compassion, transformation, healing and bawdiness death and endings. She is the respected older woman or grand-parent at the heart of family who enjoys life and sharing her experience.

Unfortunately the word Crone or Hag often has negative connotations as many wise woman and midwives were persecuted as witches in the middle ages.

Shadow Crone is the bitter, old woman who has failed to learn from her life. She blames all her failings and unhappiness on a society that no longer respects the elders. As a result she becomes increasingly isolated and fearful.

The Warrior:

Warrior represents physical strength, and the ability to protect and fight for your rights and those of of others.

Whilst the shadow side of the Warrior reflects the need to win at all costs, abandoning ethical principals to prove your supremacy.

As the battle Goddess she appeared on the battlefield in the form of a crow and returned later to feed on the dead.

How to Work With This Archetype

The Shape-Shifter: A useful Goddess Archetype to have if you need to be flexible or perform lots of different roles.

The shadow side asks whether your chameleon like tendencies reflect a deep insecurity and inability to commit to any particular path.

The Crone: This maybe one of your Archetypes if you have gained wisdom, learning from your mistakes and showing a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances.

You are experiencing the Crone’s shadow if you have become rigid in your beliefs and have become stuck in a rut having lost all ability to let those areas of your life go that no longer serve you.

The Warrior:

If you are drawn to work with this Goddess you may require her Warrior spirit to help you to stand up for your rights and set firm personnal boundaries. This Goddess can be a great stereotype to work with if you want to take control in your life, and wish to no longer play the role of the victim.

You may also wish to call upon this Goddess to champion the cause of others.

Conversely this Goddess may appeal to you if you have a very strong sense of self and are proud of the victories you have achieved. The shadow side of this Goddess may be asking you to reflect honestly on the cost of these victories. Have they been at the expense of others or your principles?

Magical Days Of the Week – Tuesday

Named for the Norse god Tyr, who was a deity of heroism and combat, Tuesday is a very martial sort of day – color associations include bright red and oranges, as well as warrior-like metals such as iron and steel.

The ancient Romans called this day Martis, after the warrior god Mars – other deities associated with Tuesday include Ares, the Morrighan, and other gods of battle and glory. Red gemstones like rubies and garnets come into play on Tuesdays, as do herbs and plants such as thistles, holly, coneflowers and cacti – you’ll notice these are all sharp, prickly plants!

One of the interesting – and more than a little amusing – aspects of Tuesday magic is that in addition to war and conflict against your enemies, this is a day also associated with marriage. You can also use this day of the week for magical workings connected to protection and initiation. Use Tuesday to assert yourself, make a mark and stake your claims.

On Tuesday: Shake the only hand of Tyr

Tyr (referred to as Tiw, Tiu or Tew in Old English) was the god of combat. He had just one hand and the story behind it is as follows.

The prophecy of the sybil that three siblings would bring troubles to gods alarmed the pantheon and Odin (see also the section for Wednesday) decided to get rid of them. One of them was Fenrir, a huge mythological wolf. They tried to bound him, but he was too strong and tore any chain they used.

Finally they asked dwarves to make a special, untearable binding called Gleipnir. It consisted of six wondrous ingredients which do not exist any longer because the gods took them from the world for good. These were the sound of a cat’s footfall, the beard of a woman, the breath of a fish, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear (meaning rather sensibilities in this case) and the spittle of a bird.

Fenrir did not believe them that they would set him free again after having tried the binding on him. Tyr had to put his arm in his mouth as the guarantee. That is why one of his arms is missing. And again, when Ragnarok begins, the wolf will free himself from Gleipnir and avenge this deception by devouring Odin.

In Romance languages, this day belongs to Mars, the Roman god of war (martes in Spanish, mardi in French).

Tuesday–The Day of Tiu

Tuesday is the first day of the week which is named after a god of the Angles and Saxons–Tiu, the God of War. The Angles and Saxons, like the Greeks and Romans, worshiped many gods, and though these gods were in a great number of ways similar to those of the Greeks and Romans, we also find very great differences. These differences are due to the fact that the Angles and Saxons lived in a very different kind of country, led a very different kind of life, and consequently had different ideas. Their chief enemies were frost and cold, and they imagined the freezing winds to be caused by frost-giants who lived in a land of ice and waged continual warfare with the gods who befriended man and protected him as far as they could against the frost-giants and all the suffering which they caused. The chief of these gods was Woden or Odin, the All-father, of whom we read in the following chapter, and next to him in importance came Thor, the God of Thunder, the bitterest enemy of the giants. The god after whom Tuesday is named was known as Tiu among the Angles and Saxons, and as Tyr among the Norsemen. He was the God of War, and corresponds to Mars among the Romans, whose name for this day was Dies Martis, the day of Mars. The French have kept the Roman name in the form mardi.

Tiu was a great fighter and knew no fear, and was naturally always called upon in time of battle. He was usually represented as having no right hand, owing to a misfortune which befell him in the following way. From his lofty throne Odin, the chief of the gods, one day saw in the land of the giants three terrible monsters, which grew so rapidly that he was filled with fear lest they should invade the home of the gods. Accordingly he determined to get rid of them before they became any stronger. One Hel, an enormous giantess, he flung into the Underworld, where, as the Goddess of Death, she ruled over the kingdom of the dead. Another, Iormungandr, a serpent, he cast into the sea, where it grew so huge that it encircled the whole earth. The third was Fenrir, a wolf, whom Odin brought to Asgard, the home of the gods, hoping that he might eventually tame him. Fenrir, however, grew stronger and fiercer each day, until the gods, of whom Tiu alone was brave enough to go near him, decided at last to bind him in such a way that he could do no harm. A very strong chain was obtained, and the gods suggested to Fenrir, who often boasted of his great strength, that he should allow himself to be bound with it in order to prove whether he was really as strong as he claimed to be. Fenrir agreed, and then by merely stretching himself easily brohe his bonds. Again the gods put him to the test with a still stronger chain, but as before he succeeded in breaking it. Seeing that no ordinary chain would be strong enough to bind Fenrir, the gods sent one of their servants to the home of the dwarfs, a race of little people who lived underground, and who were very clever workers in metal. They also possessed great powers of magic, as we shall see in a later story. At the bidding of the gods, the dwarfs made a silken rope out of the voice of fishes, a woman’s beard, the roots of a mountain, and the footsteps of a cat, which was so strong that no power could break it! A third time the gods challenged Fenrir to show his strength by allowing himself to be bound with this new cord, but Fenrir became suspicious, and at last consented only on condition that one of the gods should put his hand in his mouth, and hold it there as a pledge that the gods were not deceiving him. This condition greatly alarmed the gods, who began to fear that their trick was not going to succeed, but the bold war-god Tiu stepped forward and, without any hesitation, placed his right hand in the wolf’s mouth. The gods at once bound Fenrir with the magic cord made by the dwarfs, and, in spite of all his struggles, the wolf was unable to free himself. Great was the delight of the gods at their success, a delight shared by all but Tiu, who had little cause to be pleased with the result of the trick, for Fenrir, finding he was trapped, immediately bit off the hand of the god. Thus Tiu was deprived of his sword hand, but so clever was he that he wielded his sword equally well with his left hand, and still remained invincible in battle.

On one occasion Tiu and Thor, the God of Thunder, set out for the land of the giants to obtain an enormous kettle, which the gods required for a feast. They came at last to the home of a giant, Hymir, who possessed a kettle a mile deep and a mile wide, and were hospitably received by the giant’s wife. When she learned the errand on which they had come, she warned them that her husband was very fierce and hot-tempered, and advised them to hide themselves when Hymir returned, lest he should kill them with a glance. No sooner had the gods taken refuge behind some kettles, which were kept on a beam at the end of the hall, than Hymir came in. When he heard that visitors had called, he flashed his eyes round the hall so fiercely that, as his glance lighted on the gods’ hiding-place, the beam split in two, the kettles came crashing to the ground, and Tiu and Thor were discovered. Hymir, however, was persuaded by his wife to receive the gods kindly; he prepared a meal of three oxen in their honour, but was astonished and dismayed to see Thor eat two of them himself. The next day the gods gave the giant many proofs of their great strength and skill, and Hymir consented to give them the kettle they were seeking. Tiu at once tried to lift it but failed; then Thor, after a mighty struggle, raised it from the ground, and, as he gave the final pull, his feet broke through the floor of the giant’s house. As soon as the gods had departed, Thor carrying the kettle on his head, Hymir called his brothers together, and pursued after them. Thor, however, attacked them with his famous hammer, and killed them one by one. Tiu and Thor then continued their journey, and brought the huge kettle safely to their own land.

There are few stories told of Tiu, yet he held a high place among the gods, as the name Tuesday shows. He is most famous for his share in the binding of Fenrir, whereby was put off the dreaded Ragnarok, the day of the final battle between the gods and the giants.

Tuesday’s Witchery

Tuesday is the day to work any magick that falls in the category of increasing strength, courage, bravery, and passion. All of these intense emotions are linked to this day’s energies, and spells designed around these themes will have extra punch when performed on this magickal day.

By Tuesday, most people are over Monday’s slump and are ready to charge. They feel more alert and energized on this day. Tuesday are considered good days for communication, tenderness, taking care of business and exercise spells.

Communication Spells – Candle Communication Spell

1 bottle of anointing oil (optional)
Take a blue candle and, if you have some oil, go ahead and anoint it. If you choose not to use oil, simply, hold the candle in your hands, and allow your energy to flow into it. After doing this, place the candle on a fire-safe surface and light it. Now, say this chant one time:

“Oh, Great Spirit,
Over land and sea,
Make me a magnet.
Make me as the bees.
Words buzzing to and fro.
As all the rivers run,
Let my channels grow.
Connections opening.
Drawing them close.
Happy smiles
And wonderful host.
I speak into this flame.

Now, blow out the candle. The smoke is supposed to drift your spell out into the world and open up new lines of communication for you.

Taking Care of Business Spells – TCB Penny Spell

Items needed for this spell:
2 pennies
Your hands
Take two pennies in your hands and shake them, fairly hard. While doing this, say this chant three times:

“Penny, Penny, Penny.
I’m shaking these pennies.
And all is fun.
In a snap,
I need this done.
Sending this out in a run.
I will slap
These, two pennies, down, into one.”

After this chant, throw the pennies on-top of each other, on the ground. The hardness of the throw and the clanking of the pennies will send out the serious urgency of your spell.

A Witch’s Week of Spells and Activities

Good Morning, My Sisters & Brothers! I hope everyone is doing fine this beautiful Tuesday morning. I apologize for us running late. It is totally my fault. I have been talking to Eleanor this morning and I believe she is about the only one who truly understands me. She tells me she can look at my face and tell what I am feeling. Look into my eyes and know exactly what I am thinking. I don’t know if that is a good think or not to have someone who can read you like a book. She is the only one around here that can and thank goodness for that.

She came in the office this morning to drop off some orders. The minute she looked at me, she immediately asked, “what was wrong?” I started to tell her nothing but why lie, she would know. I told her I really didn’t know. My entire body feels strange, it is like my inner being has been ripped out of my body. I just feel numb to the world. She told me, that reality was finally sitting in. I had done more than I should emotionally wise and now it has hit home. Boy has it ever! I told her that it started this morning when we passed the burned out cabin that I use to call home. It just got worse after that I could feel a part of me slip away as I looked at the cabin. The full details of that night came back. Truthfully I was hoping they never did but…. I also have this reminder on my leg for a bit that won’t let me forget.

Then the dear friend whose niece had been shot in the High School shootings who asked me to take away her pain. Help her cope. Eleanor warned me but I didn’t listen. She told me I had enough crap floating around in my own head, how did I expect to take someone’s else’s pain away? Good question, but I had to try and I did. It drained me both emotionally and physically. I think most of all I got sick of hearing other religious leaders say that something glorious would come out of what had happened. Really? Glorious? The aunt and I talked and are still talking about what happened. The leader that made the glorious comment made her very angry. She asked me how could she stand up there and say such a thing? I told her it was her religion that saw something glorious coming out of what had happened. Personally, I told her I saw no good out of those two young people’s deaths. That lady went on and on and by the time it was over I wanted to strangle her. I have been to funerals before but nothing like this. When it was over, the aunt had nothing but questions. The only thing that came to me was to tell her about the image of my Goddess I had seen once. I told her how my Goddess was nothing but pure love, you could sense it and see it illuminating from Her. She welcomed all and she (the aunt) could rest assured that her niece was in the Goddess’ loving care and comfort. There was no more pain, no more confusion in the cosmos, the Goddess had grabbed her sweet soul and took her home to be with her. I told her aunt that we had the guarantee that we would all meet one day again. We would meet in a field of softly blowing grass, our finger tips touching the tops as we ran to meet our loved ones. We had the promise they would be there waiting for us. We also knew that as long as they were in our hearts, they would never be forgotten. They would always be with us. There would be times of sadness and times of joy thinking back on the time you had with your niece on this plane. I told her to hold those memories tight and never, ever let them go.

After I was emotionally drained out, it came to me, the aunt’s question. I had an answer for it. How could something glorious come out of their deaths?  I told her to live her life in honor of her niece. Honor her memory each and every day. Let her life and the life of the other family members be a beckon among people. Let their light shine so brightly that no evil can ever touch them again. Let their light and lives be a symbol for no matter what evil occurs it will not destroy them. For as long as they stand as a family together, they will be the goodness that comes out of their lose. Let their children’s light shine through them and let that light shine brightly and be a symbol for those who have lost so much as they have.

Evil can never win. I know we aren’t suppose to believe in evil but it is out there and we must face it. We have to face it head on. We can never let it win out over us no matter how bad the circumstances. We must pull from our own faith and from our Divine Mother for the strength and courage to face any and all obstacles put in our way.

I am sorry I didn’t mean to “preach,” I guess it was something I just had to get off my chest. I know I do feel some what better now. I appreciate you listening and most of all I appreciate you loving me. If nothing else we learn for incidents like this, there is one thing. Hug your children, your spouse, your significant other every day and most of all tell them you love them, not only tell them show them. In these days and times, you never know any more and that is a very sad thing to say about the world in which we live.

Now something I want to share with you. You have heard it before but it does give me strength in times like these…..

This energy challenges you to expand your mind or consciousness in a way, pushing you to think differently and respond to information in new ways. Uranus brings sudden ah-ha moments, personal awareness and radical new ideas, which is great for you adventurous souls who thrive on change and new ideas. However, if you are personally attached to your routine and things ‘going as planned’, then this energy can cause aggravation and tax your nervous system because things will seem sudden (even though it is more likely that they have already been brewing under the surface for some time now). You will have to adjust and be more open & mentally flexible than usual. You may not be able to control the excessive mental activity or information-overload coming in, but hopefully you can direct it a bit. It’s good to activate or clean your personal filters by taking some time in nature to process things at your own pace and generally clear your head. This can be a very inspiring & creative time, so try to tune into that, while keeping in mind that anything you begin or get into, may require a review later so you can check over the details of your revelations (or creations). No one else is (or ever will be) as dedicated to your goal as YOU will be, nor should you expect them to be. Taking a relaxed, creative approach can be very worthwhile and in fact a great strategy now.

 

Taurus

This can be a time for doing an inventory of sorts of your feelings, dear Taurus, as you’re in a better position than usual to see which attachments may be holding you back from growing and thriving. It’s a good time to clear up old projects. This is also an excellent day for rest and healing activities, but you may have to do some meditation in motion, as the Moon in your communications sector can have you on the go. This is not the best day for clarity in a friendship or with directions and instructions. However, you can find many channels for expressing yourself today, mainly through a partner or significant someone. Charitable acts can be especially satisfying now. Moon Diary Eclipse Special: The Total Lunar Eclipse in Leo, January 31st, 2018

January’s total lunar eclipse in Leo is quite something. It’s our second full Moon this month – making it a rare Blue Moon.

Plus it’s the second supermoon in a month, meaning it’s a full Moon at a point closest to us here on Earth, or perigee.

Stormy weather, geo-physical upheavals, and high tides accompany such powerful Moons. More turbulence rises as human emotions peak, and we’re generally not in a good position to make sensible decisions. That’s because not only are we more impulsive and emotional than usual, but also the information we need to make decisions can be unstable, hidden, or even surprising. Eclipses reveal and conceal, so it’s wise to wait at least a few days, if at all possible, before doing anything final.

The astrology of this total Leo lunar eclipse emphasises the tension between our own individual needs and concerns (Leo), and the needs, opinions, and desires of the wider population (Aquarius). It’s an ongoing theme that began in 2017, with eclipses falling in Leo and Aquarius this year too.

Leo eclipses tend to highlight events around famous people, leaders, royalty, and matters connected with children, creativity, romance, and entertainment. This eclipse has a strong, female edge to it, for the Moon is exactly aligned with Ceres and the Aquarian Sun is close to Venus. Female scientists, social campaigners, and humanitarians could be in the eclipse spotlight.

Ceres is a dwarf planet, named for one of the ancient grain goddesses of the Mediterranean. So, in astrology, she rules over crops, grains, and the seasonal cycles of nature. Ceres aligned with this eclipse asks us to think about how we take care of our environment, or fail to take care of it – and the consequences of that. Wild weather around this time may help to focus global attention on our often-overlooked symbiotic relationship with nature.

Ceres says ‘to everything there is a season’ – you can extend that idea to include love, and the cycles of our relationships – romantically, and amongst our families, children, and friends.

Ceres in Leo has a very queenly vibe – who’s ‘queen’ of your own social circle, workplace, or extended family? That person could be the focus of attention or changes over the next few months. A Leo eclipse puts our bosses, leaders, and prominent people in the spotlight – more than usual, that is.

This Leo lunar eclipse is most likely to trigger your own horoscope if you have planets or points at around 8 -12 degrees of Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, or Scorpio.

The generation of people, like Donald Trump, who all have Pluto at this degree of Leo, are affected – some more than others, depending on their personal horoscope. Events linked with this eclipse will unfold over the next six months, until summer 2018’s eclipses appear in July and August.

Have you heard the expression, “once in a Blue Moon,” and wondered what it means? Does the Moon really turn blue? Does this only happen once every couple of hundred or thousand years? Well, the answer is no and no. But it IS happening in 2018 … not just once, but twice!

The term “Blue Moon,” which people have adopted as a way of describing something rare, is more or less an “extra” Full Moon. Most years have 12 Full Moons, which occur approximately every month. But once every two or three years, there’s an extra Full Moon — and that is what we call a “Blue Moon.”

So why is there an extra Full Moon? It’s simply because the solar calendar has about 11 more days than the lunar calendar, and after a few years all those extra days build up to the point where there’s an extra Full Moon.

And why the color blue, if the Moon doesn’t really turn blue? It’s believed the word comes from an old Middle English word, “belewe” — which actually means “betray.” In other words, they used to call it the Betrayer Moon, because this extra Full Moon didn’t fit into the normal lunar cycle. Over the years the word “belewe” evolved into “blue” — hence, we give you the “Blue Moon.”

In 2018 there are TWO Blue Moons, one on January 31 in Leo, and another on March 31 in Libra. Full Moons are emotionally charged, so any time there are two Full Moons in one month it means that month could be an emotional roller coaster for some people. Thank goodness it only happens once in a Blue Moon!

Monday: Keep the moon safe from the wolf

Easy to remember – Monday is the Moon Day. The word moon is associated with the Norse god Mona (Máni). He was pulling the moon accross the sky, trying to escape and save it from a mythological wolf. At the end of the world, the wolf will catch them and tear the moon into pieces. This apocalyptic period of the world is called Ragnarok in Norse mythology.

In Romance languages, Monday is also the Moon Day (lunes in Spanish, lundi in French, lunedi in Italian: coming from Latin Dies Lunae).

Monday–The Day of the Moon

The moon, like the sun, was an object of wonder in the days of old, and was worshiped almost everywhere in some form or other, but it does not play quite so important a part in story as the sun. Since the moon is paler than the sun and its light soft and gentle, it was often regarded as being a chariot driven by a woman, but the course of the moon-goddess across the sky was similar to that of the sun-god.

Diana, the moon-goddess of the Greeks and Romans, known also as Cynthia, Phoebe, and Arterms, was the twin-sister of Apollo, and drove a golden chariot drawn by milk-white horses. Diana and Apollo were children of Jupiter, and were born in the Island of Delos, where a temple to Apollo was afterwards built. Another of the Seven Wonders of the World was the temple to Diana at Ephesus, on the west coast of Asia Minor. The worship of Diana at Ephesus is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles: “And when the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, ‘Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?'” The temple was destroyed in the year A.D. 263, but remains of it may still be seen.

Diana was also the Goddess of Hunting; she was a skilled archer, and spent the day in huuting, as we have seen in the story of Orion.

The most famous story of Diana is that of her love for Endymion, a young shepherd–a story which has been told by the poets many times. One evening as the moon-goddess was driving silently across the sky, she saw sleeping on a hillside a handsome youth, his resting flock scattered over the gentle slope. Attracted by his beauty, Diana stepped from her chariot and gazed long at his face; then softly stooping, she kissed him lightly on the lips. Endymion, half wakened by her touch, caught a fleeting vision of the fair goddess as she hastened to her chariot. Filled with wonder at the sight, he rose quickly and rubbed his eyes, but all he saw was the bright moon floating across the dark sky, and he thought that he had been dreaming. The next night the goddess came to him again, and again he saw her with his half closed eyes. Each night when the bright rays of the moon fell on his upturned face he dreamed this wonderful dream, but he was always sleeping when the goddess came, and nevr saw her in her full and dazzling beauty. The days now seemed long and dreary to Endymion, and he waited anxiously for the night that he might see again the glorious vision.

Diana was filled with dread at the thought that the beautiful youth would lose his beauty as the years went by, and at last she cast a spell over him while he slept, so that he should never wake again, and carried him away to a cave in a mountain-side known only to herself. There the loving Diana paused each night in her journey across the sky, and gazed on the face of the fair Endymion.

Diana, when hunting in the forest, was attended by a band of wood-nymphs who were her faithful followers. One of these nymphs, Arethusa, was one day cooling herself after the chase on the banks of the River Alpheus, when suddenly the God of the River appeared. The startled nymph ran quickly into the woods, but the god Alpheus pursued her, telling her that he loved her and that she need fear no harm. Arethusa was too frightened to listen to the god, and ran on, till at last, worn out, she prayed to Diana for help. The moon-goddess was ever ready to help her faithful nymphs, and in answer to the prayer transformed the girl into a fountain, which she hid in a thick mist. Alpheus, suddenly losing sight of the nymph, wandered sorrowfully about, calling out her name in his distress. Arethusa now thought that she was safe, but the wind-god, Zephyrus, blew aside the mist, and Alpheus saw a fountain where there had not been one before, and guessed what had happened. He quickly changed himself into a river and rushed towards the fountain, but Arethusa sprang from the rocks and hastened away over the stones and grass. Diana now saw her fresh danger, and made an opening in the ground, through which Arethusa slipped, to find herself in the kingdom of Pluto, the God of the Underworld. Here she wandered until she found another opening, by which she escaped once again into the sunshine on the plain of Sicily. Alpheus, however, at last made his way across the sea to Sicily, where he found Arethusa and won her love. The Greeks believed that flowers cast into the River Alpheus in Greece were carried by the river as gifts to his lover, and appeared later in the fountain of Arethusa in Sicily!

Among the Egyptians the moon was regarded as a god, who was named Thoth (The Measurer). He was also the God of Wisdom, Invention, Writing, and Magic. He was one of the earliest of the Egyptian gods, having come into being at the same time as Ra, the sun-god, and it was he who was said to have created the world. The Romans compared him with Mercury because, like Mercury, he invented writing. As the God of the Moon, he was represented as wearing a crescent moon on his head, and holding in his hand a stylus, a pointed instrument used by the Egyptians for writing on their wax tablets.

The Babylonian moon-god was Sin, the Lord of Wisdom. He was the father of the sun-god, and was one of the greatest of the gods, owing to the fact that the Babylonians regulated their calendar by the moon.

The Angles and Saxons believed that the moon was driven across the sky by Mani, the son of a giant, in a golden chariot drawn by a horse named the All Swift. As in the case of the sun, our ancestors had no distinct goddess of the moon; but we shall read of Mani again in a later chapter.

The Witches Monday

In the word Monday, we can see part of the word Moon. In the romance languages such as Italian or Spanish, this day of the week is called Lunes and clearly relates to the word lunar. On Mondays, a variety of magick may be worked. Because Monday centers on the energies of the Moon, things like dreams, feminine energy, health, success in spiritual pursuits, domestic matters, and things of family origin are especially important this day.

Mondays are best for love magick and anything concerning home or family, thus old saying, Mondays child is fair of face, which seems clearly to relate to the themes of love and health.

Angels of Monday are Gabriel, Arcan, Missabu, and Abuzaha. Arcan is known as the king of the angels of air and the “ruler” of Monday. Abuzaha (Abuzohar) serves Monday, and is very responsive to invocations and ritual magick. Missabu is a ministering angel of Arcan.

Check whether the moon is waning or waxing to determine what your spell will be. During waning moons, do spells to rid yourself of obstacles or for wisdom and protection. During waxing moons do magic for increase of any kind or to draw something into your life.

On Mondays, the best hour to work is moonrise. Get this information from your local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac.

Most importantly, get outside tonight and watch the moon for a while. What phase is she in? What color was the moon as she rose? Why not start a journal and write down at what location the moon rises and sets for a few seasons? This is a great way to teach you to tune in and to become more aware of the moon and the influence that she pulls into our lives. Monday & The Perfect Corresponding Spell

The Spell of the Magus

Try working this spell on a Monday while both the moon and the sun are in the sky at the same time. During certain phases of the waning moon, the moon can be seen in the morning sky (or in the new to waxing moon phase, in the evening sky just before the sun sets). This time-when both the sun and the moon are visible in the sky-is believed to be a time of incredible magickal power.

Choose a small pillar style of white candle. Inscribe the candle with a lunar symbol. Anoint the candle with sandalwood oil to increase your spirituality. Next, light the white candle and place it in a candle holder on a safe, flat surface. Gather a few almonds in a dish off to the side of the candle holder. Almonds are sacred to Thoth and are thought to grant wisdom. Note: If you are allergic to nuts, then substitute a white wintergreen-flavored mint.

Wintergreen is also associated with the moon. Repeat the spell below three times:

Thoth, Egyptian god of wisdom and of the moon so white

Hear my call: grant me might and power on this special night

Honor and integrity creates its own power

Grant me wisdom and strength in this magickal hour.

At the final repetition of the spell, eat the almonds/mint, then close the spell by saying:

As I consume these nuts/this mint, I take into myself the wisdom and benevolence of Thoth For the good of all, with harm to none By the moon and stars, this spell is done.

Keep an eye on the candle; let it burn until it goes out on its own. Meditate on the old saying that with great power comes great responsibility. Be sure you are fair and wise in all of your magickal actions. If you are unsure of your motives, then contemplate Thoth, use your imagination, and see what he has to tell you.

The Dark Night of the Soul

“The Dark Night of the Soul” is the name given to that experience of spiritual desolation that all students of the Occult pass through at
one time or another. It is sometimes characterized by feelings that your occult studies or practices are not taken you anywhere, that the initial success that one is sometimes granted after a few months of occult working, has suddenly dried up. There comes a desire to give up on everything, to abandon exercises and meditation, as nothing seems to be working. St.John of the Cross. a christian mystic, said of this experience, that it; “…puts the sensory spiritual appetites to sleep, deadens them, and deprives them of the ability to find pleasure in anything. It binds the imagination, and impedes it from doing any good discursive work. It makes the memory cease, the intellect become dark and unable to understand anything, and hence it causes the will to become arid and constrained, and all the faculties empty and useless. And over this hangs a dense and burdensome cloud, which afflicts the soul, and keeps it withdrawn from the good.”

Though the beginner may view the onset of such an experience with alarm (I know I did), the “Dark Night” is not something bad or destructive. In one sense it may be seen as a trial, a test by which the Gods examine our resolve to continue with occult work, and if you are not completely whole-hearted about your magical studies, it is during this period (at its beginning) that you will give up.

The Dark Night of the Soul should be welcomed, once recognized for what it is (I have always received an innate “warning” just before the onset of such a period), as a person might welcome an operation that will secure health and well-being. St.John of the Cross embraced the soul`s Dark Night as a Divine Appointment, calling it a period of “sheer grace” and adding;
“O guiding Night,
O Night more lovely than Dawn,
O Night that has united the lover with his beloved
Transforming the Lover in her Beloved.”

When entering the Dark Night one is overcome by a sense of spiritual dryness and depression. The notion, in some quarters, that all such experiences should be avoided, for a peaceful existence, shows up the superficiality of so much of contemporary living. The Dark Night is a way of bringing the Soul to stillness, so that deep psychic transformation may take place. All distractions must be set aside, and it is no good attempting to fight or channel the bursts of raw energy that from time to time may course through your being. This inner compulsion to set everything aside results in the outer depression, when nothing seems to excite.

The only thing to do is obey your inner voice and become still, waiting for the inner transformation, (which the “Dark Night” heralds), to take place. You may not be aware for a very long time of the results of that inner change, but when the desire to work comes again and the depression lifts, the Dark Night has (for a moment) passed. No one can help during this time, and in many cases there is hardly anyone to turn for advice. One must disregard the well-meaning advice of family and friends to “snap out of it” this is no ordinary depression, but a deep spiritual experience which only those who have passed through themselves (in other words to a magical retreat) but for many, as the routines of everyday life prohibits this, all you can do is cultivate an inner solitude, a stillness and silence of heart, and wait, (like a chrysalis waits for the inner changes that will result in a butterfly) for the Transformation to work itself out. There are many such “Dark Nights” that the occult seeker must pass through during the mysterious process of mitigation. They are all trials but experience teaches one to cope more efficiently.

Up-Helly-Aa is a centuries-old fire festival held in the Shetland Islands. It is derived from the ancient Yuletide festival celebrating the triumph of the sun over darkness and winter, and it pays

tribute to the ancient Viking Gods and Goddesses. The festival began with torch light processions that ignited giant bonfires and culminated with the burning of a replica of a Viking ship. It was believed that the fire would dispel evil spirits from the villagers and their homes. The festivities usually ended with great feasting and dancing until dawn.

Magickal Activity for January 28th – 29th the Day of Up-Helly-Aa

Personal Cleansing

This simple rite is based on the power of the Nordic rune sol (sun), the nurturing potentials of the north that are believed to banish, and gently destroy the forces of restriction and constraint. This is especially critical during the shift from darkness to light-from the old to the new.

Items needed: The rune sol, inscribed with red ink or paint on a piece of heavy construction paper or card stock; one fireproof dish with handles to which is added 1/4 cup table salt; one cup 150-percent grain alcohol; six drops Frankincense oil.

Place all the necessary items on your altar. Set the rune next to the fire proof dish containing the salt, alcohol, and oil. Light the alcohol mixture. As it burns, visualize it cleansing the mind and body as you chant:

Dark forces fade into night,
But not the power of the sun.
All be cleansed with the power of light,
For now a new time has begun.

As soon as the fire burns out, pick up the rune, kiss it, and then hang it over the main entrance of your home. Each time you pass beneath the rune, its power will strengthen and energize your mind and body.

Total Lunar Eclipse 2018: Rare ‘Super Blood Blue Moon’ Visible On January 31

The next supermoon lunar eclipse visible throughout all of the United States will be January 21, 2019 — though that one will not be a blue moon.

MIAMI, UNITED STATES: A cosmic event not seen in 36 years — a rare “super blood blue moon” — may be glimpsed January 31 in parts of western North America, Asia, the Middle East, Russia and Australia.

The event is causing a buzz because it combines three unusual lunar events — an extra big super moon, a blue moon and a total lunar eclipse.

“It’s an astronomical trifecta,” said Kelly Beatty, a senior editor at Sky and Telescope magazine.

A blue moon refers to the second full moon in a month. Typically, a blue moon happens every two years and eight months.

This full moon is also the third in a series of “supermoons,” which happen when the moon is closest to Earth in its orbit.

This point, called the perigee, makes the moon appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter.

During the eclipse, the moon will glide into Earth’s shadow, gradually turning the white disk of light to orange or red.

“That red light you see is sunlight that has skimmed and bent through Earth’s atmosphere and continued on through space to the moon,” said Alan MacRobert of Sky and Telescope magazine.

“In other words, it’s from all the sunrises and sunsets that ring the world at the moment.”

The alignment of the sun, moon and Earth will last one hour and 16 minutes, visible before dawn across the western United States and Canada.

Those in the Middle East, Asia, eastern Russia, Australia and New Zealand should look for it in the evening, as the moon rises.

Unlike a solar eclipse, this lunar eclipse can be safely viewed without protective eyewear.

How rare?

“We’ve had a lot of supermoons and we’ve had lunar eclipses, but it’s rare that it also happens to be a blue moon,” said Jason Aufdenberg, associate professor of physics and astronomy at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s campus in Daytona Beach, Florida.

“All three of these cycles lining up is what makes this unusual,” he added.

“It’s just a wonder to behold.”

According to Sky and Telescope magazine, “the last time a complete lunar cover-up took place on the second full moon of the month was December 30, 1982, at least as reckoned by local time in Europe, Africa, and western Asia — locations where the event could be seen.”

That event also occurred at the moon’s orbital perigee, making it an extra bright supermoon.

Aufdenberg said that by his calculations, the last time a supermoon, blue moon and total lunar eclipse all together were visible from the eastern United States was on May 31, 1844.

According to Sky and Telescope, the last blue moon total lunar eclipse visible from North America happened on March 31, 1866.

“But on that date the moon was near apogee, its most distant point from Earth,” it said.

Lunar eclipses during a supermoon happen rather regularly. The last one was in September 2015.

Lunar eclipses occur at least twice a year.

Supermoons can happen four to six times a year.

Although Saturn passed on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth only a month ago, it already appears low in the southeast before dawn. From mid-northern latitudes, the ringed planet lies 10° above the horizon an hour before sunrise. It shines at magnitude 0.5, which makes it the brightest point of light in this part of the sky.

Tuesday, January 30

Anyone with clear skies in North America and across the Pacific Ocean to Australia and eastern Asia can witness this week’s biggest event: a total eclipse of the Moon. The Full Moon, which arrives officially at 8:27 a.m. EST tomorrow morning, then lies deep in Earth’s shadow and will dim considerably while likely taking on an orange hue. From North America, the eclipse occurs before dawn and delivers better views to those who live farther west. The eclipse’s partial phases start at 6:48 a.m. EST (3:48 a.m. PST). Those in the continent’s western two-thirds can view at least some of totality, which gets underway at 6:52 a.m. CST (4:52 a.m. PST). Totality last 76 minutes and can be seen in its entirety west of a line that runs from central North Dakota to New Mexico. The eclipsed Moon hangs among the background stars of Cancer with the Beehive star cluster (M44) 4° to its northwest.

The Moon reaches perigee, the closest point in its orbit around Earth, just 27 hours before it is Full. At 4:57 a.m. EST on the 30th, it lies 223,068 miles (358,994 kilometers) away from us.

Wednesday, January 31

Mars stands out in the southeastern sky before dawn this week. The magnitude 1.2 Red Planet rises around 2:30 a.m. local time and appears 25° high as twilight starts to paint the sky. It exits the constellation Libra today and moves into Scorpius, standing 9° above the latter constellation’s brightest star, magnitude 1.1 Antares.. Unfortunately, the view of Mars through a telescope proves disappointing — its disk spans only 6″ and shows no detail.

Thursday, February 1

The dwarf planet Ceres reached opposition and peak visibility yesterday, but it remains a fine sight throughout February. It currently shines at magnitude 6.9 and is an easy object to spot through binoculars. The largest member of the asteroid belt resides in the constellation Cancer the Crab, which appears in the east once darkness falls and climbs highest in the south around midnight local time. This evening, Ceres lies 0.9° northeast of the 5th-magnitude star Tau (τ) Cancri.

Friday, February 2

Tonight should provide your first good opportunity of 2018 to view the zodiacal light. From the Northern Hemisphere, late winter and early spring are the best times of year to observe this elusive glow after sunset. It appears slightly fainter than the Milky Way, so you’ll need a clear moonless sky and an observing site located far from the city. With the waning gibbous Moon now exiting the early evening sky, the next two weeks will be prime viewing times. Look for the cone-shaped glow, which has a broad base and points nearly straight up from the western horizon, after the last vestiges of twilight have faded away.

For those who believe in folklore, the fate of winter rests on the shoulders of the groundhog. If the furry rodent sticks his head out of his burrow this morning and sees his shadow, we’ll have six more weeks of winter. But if the weather is cloudy, it means spring is right around the corner. What does this have to do with astronomy? Groundhog Day celebrates one of the four so-called cross-quarter days, which mark the midpoints between the solstices and equinoxes. February 2 falls approximately midway between the winter solstice and the vernal equinox.

Saturday, February 3

Comet PANSTARRS (C/2016 R2) currently glows between 10th and 11th magnitude, which makes it a tempting target through telescopes for those under a dark sky. What makes it even more tempting is its location in Taurus: The comet spends February’s first week just 2° east of the stunning Pleiades star cluster (M45). Look for a small, round, diffuse glow similar to a companion galaxy in the Virgo Cluster.

Sunday, February 4

The variable star Algol in Perseus reaches minimum brightness at 8:19 p.m. EST, when it shines at magnitude 3.4. If you start viewing as soon as darkness falls, you can watch it more than triple in brightness (to magnitude 2.1) over the course of about five hours. This eclipsing binary star runs through a cycle from minimum to maximum and back every 2.87 days. Algol appears nearly overhead after sunset and sinks low in the northwest well after midnight.

Cosmic Calendar for January 29th, 2018

The universe is already making preparations to offer humanity an extra full moon enlightenment this month as a Total Lunar Eclipse – energizing the sun in Aquarius and the moon in Leo – builds toward a dramatic high-point early this Wednesday. Laws of the Craft (The Ardaynes)

The Laws (also called the Virtues, The Ordains or The Ardaynes) are important to many neo-pagans and eclectic Wiccans. While each Wiccan group and individual are autonomous, they have the interlinking respect and function of the Laws to bring the tradition together as a whole. Security is given in adherence to the Laws, and the belief  that if one obeys the Laws and is sworn to the Laws, that they can be trusted with “Perfect Trust”. The laws guide our actions, and give us guidance on behavior, both as an individual, a group, a Coven and as a Tradition.

The New Book of the Law is a published by Lady Galadriel. It is an excellant “rule book” for those looking for a tested ethical and group working system when they form a group or Coven. These obviously won’t have much application to those of us who are Solitaries. I’ve also included two other Ardayne-like writings from Scott Cunningham called The Nature of Our Way and The Law of Power which are oriented more towards the Solitary Practitioner.

1. The Laws were created to give our lives form and order, that all might be balanced throughout all of the planes. In truth there are two sets of laws which govern us — one sets forth the ways of the Wiccan, and the other the ways of the Universe. Both are important, both should be observed with respect and treated with honor. The Laws were shaped and molded to teach us, to advise us, and to counsel us in our time of mortal life on earth.

2. Honor the Gods, for They are the channels and the manifestation of the Source. Honor yourself, for this force also lies within you. Love the Gods as They love you, and by loving yourself and your brothers and sisters, so the Gods shall honor you. As the love and joy of a man and a woman [or “lover and beloved” — LAH] flowers and grows when nurtured with respect, and cultivated with understanding and honor, so should you love the Gods.

3. The Goddess is the Great Mother, and the God is the Great Father, and we are Their children; and we shall worship Them, for They are the rulers of the Universe, and all that is therein. Therefore, O Children of the Gods, try Them not, nor attempt to test Them, for They shall show you that he Ways of the Craft are not to be belittled or mocked.

4. Let the Power of the Craft flow from you only in love — or not at all. For it has always been known that the energy webs which we weave and maintain shall eventually return to encircle their creator. Thus our works become either the net which entagles and binds us, or the web of light by which we find the Gods.

5. Let the Rites of the Wicca be a way for the children of the Gods to be as One — for Power only flows when unified. Always should you revere the Earth, and heal and tend Her, for She is our life, our Mothership, on which we navigate the dark currents of space.

6. When you reap the harvests of your lands, then you shall not reap one corner of the field, nor glean the herb gardens, or the fallen fruits of the orchards. These you shall offer to the Earth Mother, in direct return, or through offerings made to your Circle, or to sustain its Priests and Priestesses.

7. Always be proud to be of the Wicca, but do not allow your pride to become vanity — for those who are conceited are a stubling block at the door of the Temple, and they shall be cast adrift, to swim within their own vanity.

8. Observe and listen, reserving your judgement, for until all the silver is weighed, who can know the worth thereof?

9. As like breeds like, even more so does good beget love and joy. Your life will be full of love and joy if you are joyful and happy.

10. Your teachers are the servants of the Gods, and they shall plant the seeds of knowledge within the minds of their students, and they shall use their power for the good of the Wicca. Yet it is each individual’s duty to tend the seeds which are planted, and to make the final harvest. Those who misuse the power and the trust of the teacher’s position shall have to answer to the Lords of Karma, and adjust the balance accordingly.

11. The Temples of the Gods, which are Their abode on Earth, shall belong to all Their children, and each Circle shall be as a special family. Do naught against any Temple or any family of the Wicca, lest you do that thing unto the Gods, and against yourself.

12. You must not be a teller of tales amongst the children of the Goddess, and you must hold no malice or evil thoughts towards others of the Wicca.

13. You should not lie, nor give false testimony before your Elders, or those who are of the Wicca — for liars are fools, and a menace unto themselves, and to the Wicca. Be truthful in all your works and deeds, especially within the Circle, for what you say within the presence of the Gods becomes manifest.

14. You must not put stumbling blocks in the way of those who do not follow the Path of the Wicca. You must make no unrighteous judgements of their ways, and you should aid them with an attitude of love when it is asked for. Yet ever should you keep the Counsel of the Elders, and reveal naught to others of where our Circles may be, nor may you reveal our ways without the consent of the Priestess.

15. When you make a vow to the Lord or the Lady, or you swear an oath to another of the Wicca, then you must do all that has come forth from your mouth, for a covenant with the Gods, or with the Wicca, is your Honor, and woe to those who care not for the fetters they attach to their souls by not keeping their word.

16. The Great Mother and Father would not have their children suffer the indignities of oppressors for their sake, for what is within the hearts of Their children is dear and true to Them. The Ancient and Mighty Ones shall cause the balance to be made for those who desecrate the Lord and Lady, Their temples, or Their creations.

17. Never shall you use Magick, nor the Craft, to cause harm, for this is misuse of the Power, and it is not to be condoned. To cause the death of another through the Craft is to require the death of the Self in sacrifice.

18. Never betray any of the brethren, nor the lore of our people, for you are all servants of the Gods, and must live by the virtues of love, honor and wisdom. Let truth, loyalty and honor be your creed. Let them be your guides, tempered by love and wisdom.

19. The Order of the Gods shall you keep, and within Their Circles shall you walk. You should not say “I believe” when you doubt, nor claim to obey the Lord and Lady’s word when you never enter into the Temple. You must not profess with your lips that which is not in your heart.

20. Do not use the names of the Gods in negative or evil ways, for They love and cherish Their children above all others. All others They love, even those who know them not. Yet those who hate and curse in Their name shall have the Mighty Ones take the measure of their worth.

21. In any disputes between the children of the Goddess, no one may invoke any laws but those of the Craft, or any tribunal but that of Priestess, Priest, and Elders.

22. No one of the Wicca may do anything which will endagner the Craft, nor bring any of the Wicca into conflict with the Law of the Land, or with any of our persecutors.

23. Your magickal tools are channels to that which is most precious and pure within you. Do not cheapen them by haggling their price when you acquire them.

24. Never accept money for the use of the Power. It is sorcerors and charlatans who accept money for their spells and prayers. If you accept no money, you will be free from the temptation to use the Craft for evil or unworthy causes.

25. You shall never take unduly from any human, animal or elemental that which is not yours to take — for if you steal from another, in the end you will have to sacrifice something dearer to you in order to attain the balance.

26. Show honor to all people, that they may look up to you, and respect you, and their eyes shall become a mirror for your soul.

27. Those who are of the Wicca shall not own slaves, for one person may not own the spirit of another, for only the Great Mother and Father own our souls. Nor shall you take as a pledge any person’s life, for to do so is to take upon yourself both a mill and a millstone.

28. If a stranger sojourns with you, you shall do them no wrong; they shall be as one of the Circle, born amongst ye, and you shall deal with them as you would yourself.

29. Just weights and just balances shall be given by you, and just value shall you give, and thereby receive threefold.

30. Your altars shall be kept clean, pure and holy, and all that is brought into the Temple or the Circle shall be cleansed and blessed, for the joy of the Gods, and of the Wicca.

31. A clean mind should have a clean body. You should keep your body, your clothes, and your house clean, in honor of the Mother, who gives these things to you.

32. Let none die without honor, without love, without respect, unless their actions have decreed otherwise.

33. You should not couple together if it shall cause pain, jealousy or deprivation to another by doing so. Union for malice or evil reasons such as these upsets the balance, and the Lords of the Universe shall make adjustments accordingly.

34. Let those who would love, and would be as one, and bear child, be handfasted. For the sharing of love in this manner is beauteous, and love’s union in the energy of the Gods, and the heritage of the child. It is important for children to know and to identify with those who brought them here.

35. The Law of the Goddess is that none of the Wicca shall take and wed someone who they do not love, whether it is to harm another, or for some form of material gain.

36. Remember that your children are Goddess-spawned, and are free spirits. You do not own nor control them. They are your brethren, come to visit for a while, that they may share in the vision of your love and wisdom. Let each parent realize that although they may teach and guide with love, the child shall also teach the parent, and aid them in their growth and lesson

37. The etheric web and energy vortexes of the earth are in constant flux and motion to adjust to the needs of the planet. The sacred trust of the Wicca is to create and to maintain centers of light and knowledge, using the magick of the divine spark within us to focus and channel the forces of the Universal fire. And these are the channels established between the worlds of the stars and the realms of the earth, bringing in and regulating the spirit flames which energize and activate all life forms. Thus we tend and guard the threads of creation, and we weave the patterns of life and manifestation in an ever-evolving tapestry.

38. Never use your heritage or position for self-glorification or gain. Respect your magick and our ways. We must always recognize that while others may look to us to lead them, they too are our guides.

39. Keep yor body strong, your mind keen, and your purpose pure, for within your being you shall channel the Power, and it needs to be strong and pure. And these are the keys to the path of Oneness, and to communication with the Gods. Yet first you must learn to speak to Them in such a manner as They can comprehend you. For the children of the Wicca must aid the Gods, and work with Them, otherwise the Gods cannot aid and work with you. Ever remember that the Priest and Priestess are the living representatives of the God and Goddess Forces, and likewise that all humans carry these forces within them, though they may lie dormant and unawakened.

40. As the Great Mother and Father come unto one another and create with the pure vibration of Love-Wisdom, so should you strive to make your Temple pure in vibration, and thus a fitting place wherein you may invite the Gods. Thus, your Circle should always be duly purified and cast, and likewise, those who would use the gateways and travel the Circle between the earth and other realms should also be duly prepared and purified.

41. The Goddess hath said, “I shall not carry thee, yet neither shall I hinder thee, nor keep thee from having the same opportunities as all of my children. Thou art free, yet thou shalt not be coddled like babes in the storm. If thou hast true devotion within thee, then all obstacles may be overcome.”

42. The laggard is but half a person — and though half is better than none, the whole is twice as good as the half. Those who do not work, or who lack the will and desire to learn the ways of the Gods, unto them is said, “The Ancient and Mighty Ones shall not keep thee within their house, if ye learneth not.”

43. A sanctuary you shall make unto the Gods, that They may dwell amongst you. And you shall fashion it to the best of your ability, according to all tha your Elders shall show you, and pure energy shall you place therein.

44. An altar shall you make to unto the Lady, and you shall make due reverence unto Her, for every place where She is exalted, She will come to you and bless you. And you shall fashion your altar out of wood or stone, and burn incense and candles thereon, at the proper times, in observance of her ways.

45. You should set aside at least one day during each moon unto the Goddess, and on these days you shall do Her work; and on those days She shall renew Her children and bless them.

46. Learn to build your own Temple, and to craft your own sacred Circle, and all the tools that are used therein — for to be a person of the Craft is to be a person of consequence.

47. Let each of you inscribe your own record of our ways and teachings. For the course of each Wiccan should be charted, that the patterns of their life-web may be made known and utilized. Let each Wiccan start their Book of Light with the teachings and lore of their tradition, yet let it also contain the rites and ways of each individual, which are the harvest of each child of the Wicca, to use the wisdom of their heritage as the seeds of their own wisdom. Thus shall our lore and knowledge continue to grow and unfold, like a beautiful flower.

48. It is right to study and to understand the sigils, statues and stories of the Gods, for they shall guide your thoughts to Them, and They shall hear them. Yet you must ever remember that you worship not the sign nor the statue, but the Gods which inspired them.

49. If your Circle owns any land, let all guard it, and help to keep it clean. Let all justly guard all monies of the Circle, as well as the rights and property of all members of the Circle.

50. If any Wiccan truly labors, then it is right that they should have their just pay. This is not considered the taking of money for the Art, but good and honest work. Yet if any Wiccan works willingly for the good of the Craft, or for their brothers and sisters without pay, then it is to their greatest honor.

51. If any Wiccan should deny themselves some pleasure or material indulgence in order to do service in the Circle, this person shall be blessed and remembered. For those who give for the greater good of all shall have their spirit uplifted.

52. Know also that if you gift the Lady’s Priests and Priestesses, or Her Circles, this is an offering made unto the Mother Herself, for a true Priest or Priestess strives always to do Her work, and to be of service to Her children, so to honor and respect them is to honor and respect the Queen of All.

53. And the offerings which are considered the most pleasing to the Gods are these: the fruits of the orchards the scents of the trees and herbs the metals of the earth the waters of the earth the flowers of the meadows and the milk of all mothers. Yet offerings of labor or money are honest too, and these will also be accepted — moreso if you work with love in your heart, for always there is work to be done for the Gods, and service to be given to the children of the Wicca.

54. If your offerings are made to restore the balance, it must by of a nature that it not offensive to the Gods. It must be of value, yet given with a free heart. Thus shall the harmony be restored. If your offerings are given with a heart filled with love and devotion, or are of service to the Gods, or to the Craft, then shall you receive blessings manifold.

55. And when you make an offering unto the Gods, you should offer it thru the most proper medium, at the proper times, and in such a manner as to make it acceptable. Any and all remains of the rituals shall be consumed in the fire, or buried within the Earth, as a way of returning to the Source all that we use in the observance of our ways, thus ensuring the continuity of the cycle.

56. All may use the Craft to help and aid them, or for the advantage of their Circle, or the Craft — yet only if you are sure that you harm none. Let each Wiccan and Circle always debate these matters at length. Only if all be satisfied that none be harmed in any way, may the Art then be used. If it is not possible to achieve your ends one way, then perhaps the goal may be achieved by actng in a different way, so as to harm none.

57. Throughout the world it has been many a year since Wiccans have been burned. Yet misuse of the Power might raise the persecutions once again. So never break the Laws, however much you might be tempted, and never consent to their being broken. And if you know they are being broken, then you must work strongly against it.

58. In days of old it was decided by the Mighty Ones who came before us that the Art might be used to restrain others from harming the Craft or its children, yet only after great consultation with all members of the Circle, and only then to deflect or to constrain them.

59. And such were the ways of the Lady that She brought us forth in joy, and such were the Ways of the Lord that His reign gave all life pleasure. Offer love in your worship and all shall be joyous in beauty.

60. In the dimly remembered dawn of ages past, the Wicca were truly free. Then, in Atlantis came the Age of the Misuse of Power, followed by the Ages of Persecution and Suffering. Thus the people of the Wicca hid themselves and cloaked their knowlege, and wove veils of secrecy and silence. And this is how the Ways of the Wicca have been preserved through the time of darkness. Yet much of the ways of our people were lost to the ignorance of others.

61. Yet the cycle spirals ever on — and the Age of the Earth Mother once again draws nigh. We must be strong — one with our birthright, and one with our Gods, if we are to bring forth the balance. Those who would harm us, or attempt to enslave us, we must overcome — yet only through light and love, and never through violence or the evil of chaos. And through our efforts the time of our people will come into being once more. In the times which lie ahead, there lies much work to be done, so that once more the cycles of life are drawn to the path of light, and the balance acheived through the power of love.

62. In order to bring the ways of Light and Love and Life to the peoples of the Earth, our secrets are slowly becoming secrets no more, and it is good that this is so — for the age of shadow and secrecy is passing. Yet the sharing of our ways needs always to be guided by wisdom and by love. Let our rites and our mysteries be kept sacred. Let no one defile our worship or our heritage. For the defilement of our ways is an honor loss to self, and for the Craft.

63. Let each High Priestess govern her Circle with justice and Love, and with the help and advice of the Elders and the High Priest, always heeding the messages of the Gods when they come.

64. Ever remember that although the Priest is the force with which the Circle is built, the Priestess is the ruler therein — for it is through her that the Goddess created the world, and all things therein.

65. The High Priestess will heed all complaints of all Pagans and Wiccans, and strive to settle any differences between them with reason and with justice.

66. Let each Circle of Light decide how it shall be known — whether by earthly name or magickal one. For each child of the Wicca knows best the safety or dangers of their homeland.

67. Let each Circle or Temple maintain and dedicate unto the Goddess and the God all the things that are required for Their rituals, for what is blessed in the name of the Gods rightly belongs to Them, and the Priest and Priestess shall be the caretakers thereof.

68. Anyone of the circle who is of sufficient rank, and wishes to form a new Circle, shall tell the High Priestess and the Elders of their intentions. Members of the old Circle may join the new Circle when it is formed, but if they do so they must leave the other Circle, unless otherwise instructed. For it is the Old Law that each Wiccan may join the Circle of their choice, yet their energy should not be divided between two or more Temples.

69. The Elders of the old and new Circles shall meet in peace and with respect, to decide the level of interaction and connection between the Circles. Yet it is known that the splitting of a Circle often means strife. So only if it is truly in a spirit of peace and harmony should the Circles meet for the celebration of the Great Festivals.

70. None shall enter the Circle that have a sickness or an ailment which may be passed on to the Lady’s other children — for to do so causes harm to yourself, as well as to the others of the Circle. Rather should the Healers go unto the sick one, that through the love of the Gods they shall be made well and whole once more.

71. It has been judged lawful that if any of the Craft need a house, or land, and none will sell, to incline someone’s mind so as to be willing to sell, providing it harms none and the full price is paid without haggling.

72. In the matter of quarrels or disputes between the members of the Circle, the High Priestess shall convene the Council, and inquire into the matter. The Council shall hear each person privately, and then both together. And they shall decide justly, not favoring one side nor the other.

73. If an agreeable resolution cannot be reached, then that Wiccan must leave the Circle, for a Circle of Light cannot be properly formed where there is disagreement and discord. And when a Circle is not properly formed, the energy within is either dissipated, or turns ugly, festering like a hidden sore. So let them leave, but only with love in their hearts and yours, for even though your paths may diverge, you are still all children of the Wicca, and there must be no violence between us. Bear no grudges, hold no thoughts of vengeance, for this will rot away the foundation of your power.

74. It has ever been recognized that there are some people who can never agree to work under any others. At the same time there are also people who cannot rule justly. To those who must ever be chief there is but one answer: “Void this Circle, and seek another one, or if ye be of sufficient rank, then form a Circle of your own.” To those who cannot rule justly, the answer shall be “Those who cannot bear your rule will leave you.” For none may come to Circle with those with whom they are at variance, for to do so angers the Gods, and hinders the Craft.

75. Those that do wrong without knowlege shall be held innocent; those that do wrong through carelessness shall be judged lacking in wisdom, and dealt with according to the nature of the transgression. Those who do wrong with deliberation and forethought shall be thrice punished, and the Lords of Karma shall lay low their pride.

76. Each person must make a balance for their words and actions, and the judgements of the Elders should incline to try to make good come from the injustice or wrong-doing. Many are the ways to restore the balance, so let the judgements of the Elders and the Priestess be in keeping with this.

77. Do not turn aside those who seek the ways of the Wicca for the want of an offering or the lack of a robe. You are the servants of the Gods, and the servants of Their people, and those that seek for the Gods you must aid in their quest.

78. Of those who would inquire as to the ways of the Goddess, or who wish to become of the Wicca, ye shall search their hearts, and even into their spirits you shall look, as you are able. For the Wicca do not look to acquire mere numbers. Let none be turned away if their hearts are true, and their desire earnest.

79. The hidden children are like the strings of a harp: each one may give a clear note, and when gathered together in sympathy and accord, they shall give rise to a beautiful symphony. Yet when struck without reason or thought, these notes may cause discord or disharmony. Therefore the Gods decree to Their Teachers and Priests that all must be taught to master their harp, and to pluck their strings with care, that they cause no discord or imbalance.

80. Choose the Priests and Teachers of the Wicca with diligence and with care. The qualities that you should search for within them are Faith, Belief, Knowledge, Ability, Patience, Leadership, Humility, and a loving nature — for they must lead and teach the children of the Goddess, and will thereby have the power to do great good, or to cause great imbalance.

81. In practice it should be that the greatest of the Priests and Priestesses should guide the rituals within each of the Temples of the Old Gods, and truly you should be content with the advice and guidance given by them. Yet ever it should be given so that it is clear and understandable, for within the Temple each of the Wicca is free, and thus they should be able to recognize and to understand our ways and their implications. And those who cannot explain the inner workings, or give just cause and reason for their decisions, may be questioned, or the wisdom of the advice weighed.

82. Let the Priestess and Priest lead as long as they are able, and their leadership be wise and strong, and to the benefit of the Wicca. Yet if their health is ill-favored, or if the next generation needs to try their hand, then let them have the vision and the wisdom to step away from their position, and pass the duties of the Circle t o another. Let them not become overly attached to the office, nor too fond of the power.

83. If a Priestess or a Priest should tire of their duties and charges, then they may step down, but only after having trained and acknowledged a successor. If a Priest or Priestess deserts their Circle, then they have lost the right to ever lead again within this life, so great a trust they have broken. If they should return to the Circle within one turn of the Wheel, and are judged to have true atonement in their hearts, new insight and growth, then they may be forgiven, and allowed to return to the Circle, yet they shall worship only, and hold no office or title. Leadership is a sacred commitment and an honor, and they have shown that they cannot be trusted with such responsibility.

84. Any Priestess, Priest, or Elder who consents to a breach of the Laws regarding the use of the Craft to cause harm to others must immediately be relieved of their office, for it is the lives of the children of the Goddess which they endanger, as well as the honor of the Craft.

85. The High Priestess may take a Sabbatical from her Circle, if her personal life and duties require it, for up to a year and a day. During that time, the Maiden shall act as High Priestess. If the High Priestess does not return at the end of a year and a day, then the Initiates of the Circle shall name a new Priestess. Unless there is good reason to the contrary, the person who has done the work of the Priestess should reap the reward. If someone else is named, then the Maiden should continue in that office.

86. Each Priestess and Priest shall choose their own consorts, yet let them be wise in the learning of our people, and thus others shall abide by the wisdom of their choice. Yet if the Circle feels the decision is ill-advised, or that they cannot abide and work in honor and trust with that consort, then they may request a gathering of all concernted to meet and to talk, and to resolve the balance with love and honor. For only those who are pure and strong, keen and wise, patient and loving, can effectively and properly carry out the duties of a Keeper of the Circle.

87. Those of the Priesthood shall not neglect their mates, or their children, or their house, nor anything which is in their possession; nor shall the sick and the needy be neglected for the sake of the Circle. Therefore let them adjust the one thing against the other, that neither should suffer, and that which is given by the Gods is treated with love and respect.

88. Long ago, at the time of Creation, it was deemed that the female should hold the power of life-giving. And such was the male force drawn to the love and beauty of the Creation of life, that he surrenders unto her keeping the force of his powers in the furtherance of life. Yet the Priestess must always remember that the fuel of the flames which light the fires within her Temple comes from the Priest. Thus she must use the force wisely, and only with love, and she must honor and respect he who is the activator of the Life Force.

This morning’s semi-square between Venus and Chiron points to some self-protectiveness as our differences seem more glaring than our similarities. This can put a bit of distance between us temporarily.

The Moon continues its transit of stable Taurus until 12:40 PM EST when it enters curious, mutable Gemini, quickly opposing Mars which has just changed signs.

Mars enters Sagittarius this morning where it will transit until March 17th. During this transit, our actions are heavily motivated by our ideals. We are bothered by routine, quickly becoming restless if we feel confined. We have a stronger love of adventure, and of conquest–this is the position of wanderlust. We start projects or challenges with enthusiasm, although we may abandon them rather quickly if they fail to hold our interest. This may be because we set our sights too high! Mars in Sagittarius defends its principles and sometimes takes it personally when others disagree with them. Friday, January 26

The waxing gibbous Moon slides eastward through Taurus tonight. Once darkness falls across North America, you can see the lovely Hyades star cluster perched just east of Earth’s satellite. As the night wears on, the Moon moves into the V-shaped Hyades and approaches 1st-magnitude Aldebaran. (Although this star appears to belong to the cluster, it lies only half as far away.) From the northwestern United States and western Canada, the Moon passes directly in front of the star just before the pair sets.

Saturday, January 27

The brightest star in the night sky puts on a nice show January evenings. Gleaming at magnitude –1.5, Sirius shines nearly four times brighter than the next brightest star visible from mid-northern latitudes: Arcturus in the constellation Boötes. Sirius rises around 5:30 p.m. local time and ascends in the southeast throughout the evening hours.

Sunday, January 28

Mars stands out in the southeastern sky before dawn this week. The magnitude 1.2 Red Planet rises before 3 a.m. local time and appears 25° high as twilight starts to paint the sky. It currently resides among the background stars of eastern Libra, some 10° east of brilliant Jupiter. Unfortunately, the view of Mars through a telescope proves disappointing — its disk spans only 5″ and shows no detail.

In the Sky This Month

The year’s first month ends with perhaps the best skywatching show of the year, as the Moon passes through Earth’s shadow, creating a total lunar eclipse. The nights leading up to the eclipse provide plenty of beautiful sights, though. Mars and Jupiter are climbing higher into the morning sky, and snuggle close together for several days. Orion climbs high across the south during the evening hours, with its belt pointing toward Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky.

January 26: Moon and Aldebaran
Aldebaran, the brightest star of Taurus, stands to the lower left of the Moon at nightfall. Over the following few hours the Moon will move ever closer to the star. At their closest, they will be separated by less than the width of your finger at arm’s length.

January 27: Pollux
The brightest star with a known planet climbs high across the sky on winter nights. Pollux is the brighter of the “twin” stars of Gemini. It is about a third of the way up the eastern sky as night falls, with the other twin, Castor, to its upper left.

January 28: Castor
Castor, the fainter of the twins of Gemini, is about a third of the way up the eastern sky at nightfall, close to the upper left of Gemini’s brighter twin, Pollux. Tonight, the Moon will stand to the upper right of the twins.

January 29: Leo Rising
Leo, the lion, springs into the evening sky this month. Its brightest star, Regulus, rises around 7:30 or 8 p.m., with the body of the lion following over the next hour or two. Denebola, the star that marks its tail, climbs into good view by 10 p.m.

January 30: Eclipsed Blue Moon
The Moon will experience a spectrum of colors tonight. As the second full Moon of the month, it’s known as a Blue Moon. It won’t look blue, though. Instead, from most of the United States it will turn dark orange as it undergoes a total eclipse.

January 31: Orion
Orion climbs high across the south tonight. It’s marked by its three-star belt, with bright orange Betelgeuse to its upper left and blue-white Rigel to its lower right. And a giant stellar nursery lurks below the belt, known as the Orion Nebula.
