The Witches Magick for the 9th Day of the Mead Moon – Ceroscopy Wax Divination

Unicorn Comments & Graphics

CEROSCOPY WAX DIVINATION

Ceroscopy uses liquid wax poured slowly into a vessel filled with cold water. The wax shapes represent the answer.

You will need a small pillar candle, a ballpoint pen, and a bowl of cold water.

At midnight, write your question on the pillar candle using the ballpoint pen. Light the candle and say three times:

May the powers of this candle reveal the answer tonight.

Allow the candle to burn for about an hour. All the while, think about your question. Ponder the question from every angle. Now, fill the bowl full of cold water. Focus on your question, and carefully and slowly pour the melted wax from the pillar candle into the bowl of water. Look at the shapes the wax makes. What do they remind you of? Make an entry in your journal as to your question and to the shapes of the wax. Snuff out the candle when you are done. Relight the candle tomorrow evening, and allow it to safely burn down.

Three Protective Charms for Your Home

The Shoe

Obtain an old shoe, preferably one made of leather. Stuff it with protective objects, such as pins, needles, nails, tacks, scissors and bits of broken glass. Add protective herbs-such as rosemary, basil, fern, bay or mistletoe-to fill the shoe. Hang it in the attic or basement, saying these or similar words:

I place this charm of power

To guard my home from this hour.

The Bottle

Find a large bottle and stuff it with small pieces of thread of many colors (except black). This project will probably bably take you many weeks, since only small pieces of thread (one to three inches in length) should be used, and each must be introduced into the bottle separately.

As you add each piece of thread, say something like the following:

Tangle the bane up!

Tangle the bane up!

Tangle the bane up!

When the bottle is full, cap and place it in a window, in the attic or in a cupboard.

A Witch’s Bottle

Gather rosemary, needles and pins. Fill a small jar with these three ingredients, saying the following as you work:

Pins, needles, rosemary, wine

In this Witch’s bottle of mine;

Guard against harm and enmity;

This is my will, so mote it be!

Visualize these herbs doing just that. When the jar is full, pour in red wine. Then cap or cork the jar and drip wax from a black or red candle around the seal. Bury the jar at the farthest corner of your property or place it in an inconspicuous spicuous spot in the house. The Witch’s bottle destroys negativity and evil: The pins and needles impale evil, the wine drowns it, and the rosemary sends it far from your property.

Let’s Talk Witch – Home Protection

Home Protection

To truly be a place of magical living, the house must be secure from unwanted intrusions, both physical and nonphysical. physical. In the past, guarding against thieves was treated in the same way as warding off evil spirits and werewolves; though the “enemies” are different, they are similar in threat. Over millennia, we have sanctified certain objects, gestures, symbols and signs to act as bar and bolt against all that would harm us.

A home should be a place of refuge, security and warmth. It is of the utmost importance to retain these qualities. While alarms and dead-bolt locks do their part, our inner selves yearn for mystic charms woven by moonlight light with words of power. These charms, placed inside or outside the home, ward off ghosts, demons, wraiths, curses and creatures from the abyss, as well as thieves and sales representatives.

There are many charms and spells you can use to safeguard guard your home. Choose those that speak to your sense of mystery and spark your imagination. These will be the most effective.

Amulets are objects that repel negative (evil) influences. They can be worn, carried, suspended from ceilings, concealed between walls, propped up on furniture or slipped behind family pictures. Household amulets guard the home by driving away harmful energies, thus ensuring a calm atmosphere within.

According to tradition, it is best to have at least three amulets in the house. They can be of identical or different types. Unless specified, place them in spots of prominence: near a household altar, on or near doors and windows, or near the hearth.

Stones with naturally occurring holes, called holey stones, can be found on beaches and in river beds throughout out the world. Excellent household protectors, they can be hung singly from cords throughout the house, or several can be strung together on a thick cord like a necklace and hung behind the front door.

Agates and lodestones are both powerful household amulets. The larger the stones, the greater their effect. Lodestones (natural magnets) have long been used in magic, setting up fields of energy that screen out negative vibrations. Agates bring luck to the home, as does a carved piece of turquoise.

A stone amulet may consist of one or more of these types of stones placed in a white bag and tied with yam. For greatest effect, mix the stones.

Fossils, owing to their tremendous age and eerie appearance,  have long been called upon to guard the home. Generally placed on window sills or hearths, or suspended from beams, fossils bring luck and guard against the effects of bad weather, according to ancient magical tradition. Choose fossils that appeal to you; those marked with stars, such as sand dollars, work doubly well.

Another, less ancient, household amulet is the Witch ball-a sphere of glass silvered on the inside. So called because some misguided people used them to keep “Witches” away, Witch balls are still being produced but are hard to find. If you are able to locate one, hang or place it in the house, perhaps in front of a window. Its shining surface face will reflect evil and negativity and guard the house. Until you find one, you can use a silver glass Yule tree ornament  instead.

The Witch ball should be kept clean to be effective. Allowing it to become dirty not only negates its effectiveness, ness, it can also pull negative vibrations into your home! Some Witch balls are made of unsilvered clear glass; some reflect a swirl of different colors. To guard against evil, these Witch globes are often filled with tiny pieces of string, dill seed or pins.

Fishing floats, spheres of colored glass once used by fishermen to float nets, are also thought to be highly protective if placed in the home or hung in nets outside. Although these floats are manufactured for decorative purposes today, the most effective ones are those collected on beaches, for they were actually used in the ocean a limitless source of power.

Celebrating Other Spirituality 365 Days A Year – Panathenaea

July 9 – 16

Panathenaea

The Panathenaea (all-Athens) was celebrated annually in Midsummer. Instituted by the Athenian tyrant Pisistratus in the mid-500s B.C., the festival served as a national religious holiday that celebrated the birthday of Athena-the city’s patron Goddess. During the weeklong celebration, there were sacrifices, sports competitions, and a procession of citizens. Every fourth year the festival was especially elaborate and called the Great Panathenaea, during which the procession of citizens would carry a new pelops, or lady’s gown, up to the Athenian Acropolis. The gown was then offered up to the ancient olive wood statue of Athena.

Athena

Athena the warrior Goddess was admired for her intelligence and dislikes of senseless violence and was adept at the art of peace. The patroness of architects, sculptors, spinners, and weavers, Athena was the proctor of all towns, especially Athens, of which she was the patron deity. The most notably celibate of the Greek Goddesses, Athena’s symbols include the owl, olive tree, spear, shield, chariot and flute. her colors are gold, blue, and olive green, and she is associated with the numbers 9 and 25.

Thursday’s Witchery

Thursday’s Witchery

Today is the day for prosperity work of all kinds. It can also be used for healing work, whether that is a physical healing of an illness or an emotional healing. Also remember that you have to follow up your healing work and prosperity magick and physical action.

I can’t tell you the number of times I have met new witches who complain to me that their prosperity spell or “I need a better job” spell did not work as they expected. They’ll ramble on and on about how much time and money they spent working their magick….but, alas, they had no glorious manifestion of wealth or fabulous job that suddenly dropped out of the sky and landed in their laps.

Then, when I gently ask them, “Did you enchant your resume or application when you filled it out? Did you do a little confidence-boosting spellwork when you went to apply for the job or went to the interview?” typically they give me a blank, confused stare.

Nine times out of ten, their response is, “You mean I have to go out and actually look for the job too?” Um, yes, my dear, you certainly do. Magick follows the path of least resistance, which means it’s going to manifest along the simplest, quickest route. Get out there and hit the pavement. See what you can find. Times are tough and competition for good jobs is fierce, so you need whatever edge you can get. For folks like us, we’re going to get the edge by using our magick and our spellcraft.

Thursdays have such a rich source of magick for us to draw upon that, honestly, the sky is the limit. This is the day associated with the gods of the sky and heavens, after all. Get to know these deities and add their wisdom and magick into your days.

Thursday

Jupiter’s (Thor’s) day

The name is derived from Old English Þūnresdæg and Middle English Thuresday (with loss of -n-, first in northern dialects, from influence of Old Norse Þorsdagr) meaning “Thor’s Day”. Thunor, Donar (German, Donnerstag) and Thor are derived from the name of the Germanic god of thunder, Thunraz, equivalent to Jupiter in the interpretatio romana.

In most Romance languages, the day is named after the Roman god Jupiter, who was the god of sky and thunder. In Latin, the day was known as Iovis Dies, “Jupiter’s Day”. In Latin, the genitive or possessive case of Jupiter was Iovis/Jovis and thus in most Romance languages it became the word for Thursday: Italian giovedì, Spanish jueves, French jeudi, Sardinian jòvia, Catalan dijous, and Romanian joi. This is also reflected in the p-Celtic Welsh dydd Iau.

The astrological and astronomical sign of the planet Jupiter is sometimes used to represent Thursday.

Since the Roman god Jupiter was identified with Thunor (Norse Thor in northern Europe), most Germanic languages name the day after this god: Torsdag in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, Hósdagur/Tórsdagur in Faroese, Donnerstag in German or Donderdag in Dutch. Finnish and Northern Sami, both non-Germanic (Uralic) languages, uses the borrowing “Torstai” and “Duorastat”. In the extinct Polabian Slavic language, it was perundan, Perun being the Slavic equivalent of Thor.

There are a number of modern names imitating the naming of Thursday after an equivalent of “Jupiter” in local tradition. In most of the languages of India, the word for Thursday is Guruvar – var meaning day and guru being the style for Bṛhaspati, guru to the gods and regent of the planet Jupiter. In Thai, the word is Wan Pharuehatsabodi – referring to the Hindu deity Bṛhaspati, also associated with Jupiter. En was an old Illyrian deity and in his honor in the Albanian language Thursday is called “Enjte”. In the Nahuatl language, Thursday is Tezcatlipotōnal meaning “day of Tezcatlipoca”.

Magickal Goody for July 8th – Make a Simple Cornhusk Chain

Magickal Goody of the Day

Make a Simple Cornhusk Chain

(get a jump on Lammas decorations while you got all them husks handy!)

If you’re having a cookout and planning on eating corn on the cob, this is a great craft to do with all those leftover corn husks. The fresh ones work best, but dried ones can be used if you soak them in water for ten or fifteen minutes and then pat them dry with paper towels.

Separate the husks lengthwise into strips about one inch wide. They should tear easily on their own. Form the first strip into a circle and staple it closed.

Take the second strip, loop it through the first, and staple (this is just like those paper chains you made in school when you were a child). Repeat until all the strips of husk have been added to the chain.

Once you’ve completed your chain, there are a number of things you can do with it. Place it on your altar, drape it over a window or a door, or hang it on the wall. As it dries, the husks will shrink and fade from green to tan, but it will still make a great Lammas decoration!

Deity of the Day for July 8th is Ares, Roman God of War

Deity of the Day

Ares
Greek God of War

Ares, the Greek Warrior God:

Ares was a Greek god of war, and son of Zeus by his wife Hera. He was known not only for his own exploits in battle, but also for getting involved in disputes between others. Furthermore, he often served as an agent of justice.

The Rape of Alkippe:

A Greek legend tells the tale of Ares slaying of one of Poseidon’s sons. Ares had a daughter, Alkippe, and Poseidon’s son Halirrhothios attempted to rape her.

Ares interrupted before the act was completed, and promptly killed Halirrhothios. Poseidon, livid at the murder of one of his own children, put Ares on trial before the twelve gods of Olympus. Ares was acquitted, as his violent actions were justified.

Worship of Ares:

As a warrior god, Ares wasn’t quite as popular with the Greeks as his counterpart, Mars, was among the Romans. This may have been due to his unreliability and unpredictable violence – something which would have been completely contrary to the Greek sense of order. He doesn’t seem to have been very popular among the Greeks, who appear to have been mostly just indifferent to him.

In fact, many of the legends surrounding Ares culminate in his own defeat and humiliation. In Homer’s Odyssey, Zeus himself insults Ares after his return from the battlefields of Troy – where Ares was defeated by the armies of Athena. Zeus says:
Do not sit beside me and whine, you double-faced liar.
To me you are the most hateful of all gods who hold Olympus.
Forever quarreling is dear to your heart, wars and battles.

His worship was centered in small cults, rather than amongst the general populace of Greece. Specifically, more warlike areas like Macedonia, Thrace, and Sparta paid homage to Ares.

There are numerous accounts of a Spartan man, Menoikeus, offering himself as sacrifice to Ares, in order to secure the gates of Thebes. Gaius Julius Hyginus, a Greek historian, wrote in Fabulae, “When the Thebans consulted Teiresias, he told them that they would win the battle if Kreon’s son Menoikeus [one of the Spartoi] were to offer himself as a victim to Ares. When he heard this, Menoikeus took his life in front of the gates.”

Although little is known of the cults of Ares and how they specifically paid tribute, most sources do refer to sacrifices being made prior to battle. Herodotus refers to the offerings made by the Scythians, in which one of every one hundred prisoners taken in battle is sacrificed to Ares. He also describes, in his Histories, a festival which took place in Papremis, part of Egypt. The celebration re-enacts the meeting of Ares with his mother, Hera, and involves beating priests with clubs – a ritual which often turned violent and bloody.

The Warrior Oath

Aeschylus’ epic narrative, Seven Against Thebes, includes a warrior’s oath and sacrifice to Ares:
Seven warriors yonder, doughty chiefs of might,
Into the crimsoned concave of a shield
Have shed a bull’s blood, and, with hands immersed
Into the gore of sacrifice, have sworn
By Ares, lord of fight, and by thy name,
Blood-lapping Terror, Let our oath be heard-
Either to raze the walls, make void the hold
Of Cadmus – strive his children as they may –
Or, dying here, to make the foemen’s land
With blood impasted.

Today, Ares is seeing a resurgence in popularity thanks to a number of pop culture references. He appears in Rick Riordan’s highly successful Percy Jackson series for young readers, as well as Suzanne Collins’ books about Gregor the Overlander. He also shows up in video games, such as God of War and was portrayed by the late actor Kevin Smith in the Xena: Warrior Princess television series.

Some Hellenic Pagans pay tribute to Ares as well, in rituals honoring his bravery and masculinity
