Aomori Nebuta

Each year in Japan the festival of Aomori Nebuta commemorates the beginning of the harvest season. The celebration begins with a parade of bamboo effigies, with grotesquely painted faces that are used to frighten away the spirits of sleep. The rituals that follow are designed to keep the farmers awake for longer periods of time allowing them to complete their harvesting.
