Traditionally called the High Priestess, this major arcana, or trump, card represents human wisdom. She can be viewed as a kind of female Pope, the ancient Egyptian Priestess of Isis, the even older snake and bird Goddesses, the Greek Goddess Persephone, or the Eve of Genesis before the Fall.

For the accused heretics who were burnt at the stake for revering her in the 14th and 15th century, she symbolized the prophecy of the return of the Holy Spirit, which was perceived as the female aspect of the Holy Trinity.

In the sequence of cards in the major arcana, the High Priestess appears as soon as the Fool decides he wants to develop his innate powers, making a move toward becoming a Magus. The High Priestess is his first teacher, representing the Inner Life and the method for contacting it, as well as the contemplative

The classical moon goddess, Diana, is still worshipped by neopagans today. Long after Christianity’s triumph over classical paganism, her worship is still going strong.

Diana was the personification of the positive aspects of lunar forces. She was also believed to have led groups of nightriders (known as the “Wild Hunt” or the “Furious Horde”) who flew through the air. The “Wild Hunt” was comprised of “people taken by death before their time, children snatched away at an early age, victims of a violent end.” The goddess would accompany her followers as they wandered at night among the houses of the well-to-do. Whenever they would arrive at a home that was particularly well-kept, Diana would bestow her blessings upon it.

Diana was intrinsically linked with several other witch deities, including Abonde, Abundia, Aradia, Hecate, Herodias, Holda, Perchta, Satia, and Venus.

White candle

Red candle

Black candle

The Spell:
Imagine a blue ball of energy inside the candles. Caress the candles as you chant:

“Goddess of Three, I call upon thee,
To protect from those who wish to harm me
Keep them from using the gift from thee
Keep them from using thy gift to harm me.”

When you finish chanting, imagine the blue ball exploding into lines of blue.
Imagine the lines surrounding you and wrapping you in warm blue energy.
See the blue light as a shield. Know that it is unbreakable.

Think about how it is the Goddess’ Light protecting you. Then put the candles someplace where they can burn undisturbed and let them burn themselves
out, sending all the energy into your shield. This spell is best performed during the full moon. For longer effects you can make it a seven-day spell.

In the East Anglian tradition this day was dedicated to St. Genevieve, patroness of the city of Paris. At seven years of age Genevieve was singled out of a crowd by St. Germain of Auxerre, who foretold of her future sanctity. The life of St. Genevieve was one of great austerity, constant prayer and works of charity.

January 3 is still the day that Native American tribes of the Pueblo perform their annual fertility ceremony, known as the Deer Dance. This centuries-old ceremony includes a ritual dance performed by a Shaman, wearing a deer headdress, who invokes the Goddess known as the Deer Mother. When properly summoned, the Deer Mother grants the tribe prosperity for the coming year.
