Comet PANSTARRS (C/2015 ER61) currently hovers around 10th or 11th magnitude, bright enough to see through most small telescopes. But its main claim to fame early this week is its convenient location just south of the Pleiades star cluster (M45). From August 14 to 21, the solar system object appears as a fuzzy patch of light passing less than 1° south of the dipper-shaped cluster.

Monday, August 21

The day amateur astronomers have been looking forward to for decades is finally upon us. For the first time since 1979, the Moon’s dark umbral shadow touches the continental United States, bringing a total solar eclipse. People in the path of totality, which stretches from the Oregon coast to the shores of South Carolina, will see the Sun’s bright surface disappear and its ethereal corona blossom around the Moon’s pitch-black disk. Tuesday, August 22

Distant Neptune reaches opposition and peak visibility in two weeks, but the view now is essentially the same. The ice giant planet rises during evening twilight and climbs nearly halfway to the zenith in the southern sky by 2 a.m. local daylight time. The magnitude 7.8 planet lies in Aquarius, 1.5° east of 4th-magnitude Lambda (l) Aquarii. You’ll need binoculars to spy Neptune and a telescope to see its blue-gray disk, which spans 2.4″.

Wednesday, August 23

Although Saturn reached opposition more than two months ago, it remains a tempting target in the evening sky. The ringed world stands highest in the south an hour after sunset and doesn’t dip below the horizon until after midnight local daylight time. Saturn shines at magnitude 0.4 against the backdrop of southern Ophiuchus, a constellation whose brightest star glows six times fainter than the planet. When viewed through a telescope, Saturn’s globe measures 17″ across while its spectacular ring system spans 39″ and tilts 27° to our line of sight.

Uranus’ visibility continues to improve week by week. It now appears nearly 25° high in the east by midnight local daylight time and climbs highest in the south as morning twilight commences. The magnitude 5.7 planet lies in Pisces, 1.1° north of magnitude 4.3 Omicron (o) Piscium. A telescope reveals Uranus’ blue-green disk, which spans 3.6″.

Friday, August 25

Following its meeting with the Sun earlier this week, the Moon has now climbed into view in the evening sky. Be sure to catch the 20-percent-lit crescent this evening, when it forms a pretty triangle with magnitude –1.8 Jupiter and 1st-magnitude Spica. All three objects lie in the constellation Virgo and stand well clear of the west-southwestern horizon during evening twilight. And don’t pass up an opportunity to view Jupiter through a telescope. The giant planet’s disk spans 33″ and shows a wealth of atmospheric detail.

Saturday, August 26

Venus appeared among the background stars of Gemini the Twins yesterday morning, but you’ll find it against the backdrop of Cancer the Crab today. This border crossing sets up a pretty conjunction a week from now, when the gleaming planet appears 1° south of the Beehive star cluster (M44).

Mercury reaches inferior conjunction, passing between the Sun and Earth, at 5 p.m. EDT. The innermost planet will return to view before dawn in early September.

The constellations Ursa Major the Great Bear and Cassiopeia the Queen lie on opposite sides of the North Celestial Pole, so they appear to pivot around the North Star (Polaris) throughout the course of the night and the year. In late August and early September, these two constellations appear equally high as darkness falls. You can find Ursa Major and its prominent asterism, the Big Dipper, about 30° above the northwestern horizon. Cassiopeia’s familiar W-shape, which currently lies on its side, appears the same height above the northeastern horizon. As the night progresses, Cassiopeia climbs above Polaris while the Big Dipper swings below.

Astronomy magazine’s HD eclipse livestream is provided by David Brewer in Denver, Colorado. From Denver, the livestream will capture a 92 percent eclipse, with the maximum eclipse occurring at 11:47am MDT. The partial eclipse will begin at 10:23am MDT; our livestream should start no later than 10am MDT.

The procrastinator’s guide to viewing the solar eclipse

This is not a drill. The eclipse is tomorrow. I repeat, the total solar eclipse is tomorrow.

Yes, the celestial event of the year/decade/century, depending who you ask, is finally here. Many (organized) people planned their eclipse day a year ago, or longer.

But if you’re not one of them, don’t worry — we’ve got you covered.

Here’s what you need:

Real (not fake) eclipse glasses

This cannot be stressed enough. Staring at the sun can blind you — it’s even called “eclipse blindness.” In order to view the eclipse, you need eclipse glasses, which have a special solar filter to protect your eyes. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous characters make counterfeits, but spotting the fakes is easy. Only 12 companies make eclipse glasses that the American Astronomical Society and NASA have certified are safe. Make sure the “ISO” (International Organization for Standardization) icon is on any eclipse glasses you buy. The glasses also must have the ISO reference number 12312-2.

You snooze, you loose, folks. Stores across the country began running out of eclipse glasses last week, so you may be out of luck. Check the list below for where the glasses are being sold and send a prayer to the eclipse gods that some are still available.

The Solar Eclipse and Magick

Throughout the year, the sun waxes and wanes. At the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, the sun is only visible for a few short hours. Days become longer and at the Spring or Vernal Equinox, day and night are equal. At the Summer Solstice, the sun is visible for the longest period of time (the longest day of the year). Days start to become shorter and at the Autumnal Equinox, day and night are equal again. Finally, as the sun wanes, we are at the Winter Solstice again.

During a solar eclipse, we experience what might be called a “micro year”. The sun is whole, then partially or completely hidden, and then visible again. Within just a few minutes, an energy similar to a complete cycle of solstices and equinoxes can be felt.

In addition to this somewhat seasonal energy, we are aware of the Moon’s presence. Her shadow falls across the Earth as she appears between the Earth and the Sun. This adds the unification of solar and lunar energy, reinforcing the sense of wholeness, completion and cycles of a solar eclipse.

Consider this fact about solar eclipses: A solar eclipse can only occur during the day, on a new moon. This means that you are working with new moon energy (great for getting rid of things and letting go).

A solar eclipse does not have to be visible for you to work magic. You won’t be able to see every eclipse unless you can travel all over the world easily! Simply look at charts and almanacs to find the exact time of the eclipse, and work your magic then.

Solar eclipses are perfect for some specific types of magick. Consider the solar eclipse of June 10/11, 2002. Because this eclipse was close to the Solstice, the energy of the Solstice dominated the beginning of the eclipse.

In the Northern Hemisphere of the world, the sun is waxing as we near the Summer Solstice (In the Southern Hemisphere, the sun is waning and the Winter Solstice is approaching.)

When an equinox occurs at the time of the waning year (from the Summer Solstice to Yule) it is a good time to rid yourself of unwanted energies, bad habits, unhealthy patterns of thinking and acting, negativity, and other baneful things in your life. You can work with both the new moon energy, and the waning year energy, in addition to the energy of the eclipse.

Here’s an example:

Your ex-lover caused you a lot of pain. Whenever your new love gets close to you, you push away to prevent getting hurt again. You realize that you cannot fully love this new person until you let your guard down. About a half hour before the eclipse begins, you work to let go of the old pattern of pushing away. As the eclipse begins, you feel the pattern dissolving. As the eclipse is ending, you reinforce the growth between you and your new love, and the growing trust within you. This waning/waxing type of magic works well with eclipses.

Consider the time of year the solar eclipse will occur during. Is the sun waxing or waning? Next, consider the lunar influence, the moon is new and will be waxing in a day or two. Finally, consider the waning/waxing energy of the solar eclipse. Use this information to develop your own, tailor-made spells, rituals and rites.

The Path of Totality

What’s that?

That’s the precise path on our planet where the Sun will be totally eclipsed. For others outside the path, it may be partially eclipsed. For example, I know that here in my spot in Florida, the Sun will be between 85-75% eclipsed. Still pretty rad!

Don’t fret if you’re not going to be in the Path of Totality. You don’t need to be able to visibly see an eclipse for its energy to be able to affect you. And that’s a good thing too b/c it’s very difficult to catch a total eclipse, especially a solar one! You can be anywhere on planet and you will be affected by its energies, like it or not. You can also work with the energies, should you choose to.

Just as I teach with crystals if an energy is High Amplitude (meaning it carries a whopping lot of energy) it can mess with the base frequency of an object. Yeah, I classify an eclipse as a high amp event which leaves an imprint on Mother Earth’s grid (all over planet) which, in turn, influences us. Make sense? And yes, the effects of its energy on us has been tested by many a scientist.

Many people are quite sensitive to these energetic shifts and can easily feel them. Those who are empaths or work closely with high-frequency energies like crystals or do energy work are even more sensitive to these sort of cosmic energetic shifts. If you’re not feeling it… that may be a signal to you to get out there, barefoot on the Earth & get grounded and connected.

This eclipse is the “bookend partner” eclipse to the August 7 Partial Lunar Eclipse we just had. As I’ve been teaching for decades, eclipses usually occur in pairs of solar + lunar; a balancing of energies. During this “in-between window”, we enter a time of energy-in-flux where things get a bit crazy for us. A total solar eclipse is also a time of activations (both cosmic and biological) and leveling-up, but with this August solar eclipse, that in-flux time ends a few days after the actual eclipse is over; the energetic “window” closes. Although the portal for this time of change closes, the integration period can last up to one year, so you may continue to feel the effects of it. By the way, this will be the last eclipse of any sort for 2017… but it’s a DOOZIE! So hold on.

At this time, the Moon’s energy will be very strong because it’s gonna be closer to the Earth than usual. The Sun’s energy, on the other hand, is somewhat diminished during the eclipse. So, this makes for a more intense than usual New Moon energy; essentially, a New Moon on steroids.

This is a time for:

planting seeds for your BIG PLANS, MAJOR CHANGES
setting important new intentions
greatly enhanced and amplified intuition/divination
major yin energy (feminine, intuitive, right-brained)
planetary activations
DNA activations

Since the solar eclipse seems to intensify our focus on the Sun while amplifying our connection to the Moon, I feel it’s important to actually connect with both solar & lunar energy at this time.

Symbol of the Dark Lord

The solar eclipse is the symbol of the Dark Lord, also called the Lord of Shadows, the Leader of the Wild Hunt, Hades, Pluto and the death and resurrection aspects of Cernunnos, Dionysus — and, on a cosmic level, Shiva, among others. The Christian comparison is the portion of the crucifixion of Jesus when he descends into hell then resurrects. As such, the solar eclipse (the Bible story of the crucifixion states the sun darkened at 9.00 am) is a time for ritual observances that link the practitioner with the death passage portion of the cycle of life.

This is an opportunity to connect with the Shadowlands or the Underworld and to face one’s own fears and uncertainties about death. By confronting death through meditation, the face of Death is unmasked. The face one sees may initially be grotesque and horrible, but once the beholder accepts that this is also the face of the giver of life’s energy, that face changes and is beautiful to behold. This is the significance of focusing on the passage. By facing our fears, we gain insight and freedom — death is no longer to be feared.

Once a person is no longer fearful of death or the Underworld, the solar eclipse becomes a good time to honor ancestors, visit with the spirits of the departed, charge Craft tools of dark power magics and honor the Dark Powers.

The eclipse does not last long, so lengthy ceremonies would not be in order unless you create one that begins prior to the eclipse and encompasses the eclipse. Instead, if you are feeling connected, you may simply want to light some incense and a candle and invite some departed to visit with you for just a little while so you can ask for guidance, tell the person you love him/her, offer forgiveness or ask for it as the case may be, or use the time to celebrate your union with the Crone and the Dark Lord. It is also a good time to end anger and hostility, so that when the Sun reappears the Light will shine within you as well upon the Earth.

Cosmic Ritual Ideas for the Up-Coming Eclipse

Mantra Practice: I Trust. This is a powerful expression because it forces to release, let go, and to honor the flow of your life. Say this mantra throughout the day. Write it down, post it somewhere you can honor its reminder.

Candle Prayer: ignite the flame and watch it burn with such elegance. A divine notion of illuminating the darkness and your unconscious. Say a little prayer into the heat the rises, a whisper of your desire and intentions. Once you finish your prayer, blow out the cancel. Watch the smoke blend into the night.

Crystal Work:

Crystal Bath: soak with the crystals, their energy will infuser into the water. Aquamarine, Rose Quartz and Moonstone are the perfect combination for a goddess bath. Add in Peppermint or Lavender bath salt to enhance the healing energies.

Hold your crystals, feel their energy. Spend time easing the mind into your haven, use your crystals to access chakras, past lives, and emotions that you feel need tended to.

Journal:

Write it all down. Every emotion, thought, and memory. Savor it all, embrace the pain and happiness that rises to the surface. Be kind and open with the emotional shadows that step into the light. Healing starts with vulnerability.

Solar Eclipse Crystals

I used to think b/c this is a “solar” event that working with solar energies was the thing to do, but through doing this work myself over the years, I’ve found it to be much more effective to work with the lunar energies instead. I also like to layer various types of energies together of similar frequency (enter the crystals!) to attune my energies to these events. We can totally use crystals in tandem with these eclipse energies.

Here are my fav’s:

1. Labradorite – It’s actually closely related to moonstone and it has that similar flash; a blue flash that you get in certain light, that iridescent quality. Labradorite is all about tapping into magic. Plus it’s also quite protective. If you’re feeling like you need some protective vibrational frequencies during a certain phase of the moon, then go ahead and try working with labradorite.

2. Indigo Gabbro (aka Mystic Merlinite) – Gorgeous indigo gabbro is newly discovered & only found on the island of Madagascar. It’s a black stone with large gray mottling in it that can be polished to a high shine. If you hold it out in the sunlight, you’ll notice that the grays in it have a sort of violet iridescence that’s beautifully unique. A gentle stone, I find it to be quite lovely to work with it at New Moon time & for setting intentions. It also has a very calming quality to it.

3. Dendritic Agate (aka Merlinite)- for further entraining with that boosted intuition! It’s a rather forceful energy though, so be careful when working with it. You may want to go slowly & try it out in small doses at first.

Things I like to do:

Create and work with an Eclipse Intention Setting Crystal Grid
Sit outside during the eclipse on the Earth with a select crystal firmly planted in the Earth in front of you to activate and attune it to the energies of the eclipse
Put together an Eclipse Energy crystal mojo kit including several crystals in a little pouch to carry around with you
Take a Solar Eclipse Energy Bath (add several drops of jasmine essential oil [carries intense New Moon frequencies] along with your chosen eclipse crystals)

Solar Eclipse: Strengthen Personal Energy

You will need the following items for this spell:

Total Solar Eclipses last only a few minutes! Plan wisely. Before the eclipse starts if you dont feel comfortable sitting or laying on the ground outside, put out your lawn chair, towel, or blanket to sit or lay down on. Arrange your chakra crystals, candles, or incense the way you want them around you. Light your candles or incense and play the music you use to meditate with. Feel the balance of Masculine and Feminine energies from the sun and moon inside of yourself. As the eclipse ends, calmly go through the steps to come out of your state and collect anything you brought outside with you. Make sure to leave nature as it was before you arrived.

Discharge Negative Energy During the Eclipse

Dark moon energy is like all vibration – it causes an effect even though you can’t see it. Energy is all around us. The Law of Attraction states that “like attracts like,” so wouldn’t you want to attract only the highest and the best? The ability to do that starts with awareness of your feelings. This ritual can help clear the path for you to manifest more positive emotions and bring more good vibrations into your life.

\This spell uses the following correspondences: Sage to remove negative energy and Basil for courage. You can use either of these as oil and/ or incense, but you must also have one fresh leaf or dried teaspoon of each herbe. Your touch stone, which you will use during the spell and as a reminder afterwards, is Hematite for dispelling negativity.

QUICK SPELL

Find a quiet, comfortable place where you will not be disturbed. You will need the following items: one white candle, oil and/ or incense and Hematite touch stone.

If you’re using oil, anoint your forehead. Light the candle and the incense and sit silently for a few moments while holding the stone. Close your eyes and ask for the energy of the dark moon to guide your meditation. When you feel the time is right, say the following affirmation:

Dark moon, draw away the negative energy that plagues my day. Help me to attract only the highest vibrations. So mote it be!

Hold the touch stone in your dominant hand, close your eyes and breathe deeply and slowly. Briefly recall a time when you had a string of bad luck. Things can go from bad to worse very quickly when negative energy takes over. Now, take the Sage and crush it lightly before holding it under your nose. Notice its distinct aroma and visualize it acting like a broom to sweep that undesirable image away.

Put the Sage aside and pick up the Basil and do the same as before. As you inhale its distinctive aroma, feel yourself infused with courage. Visualize vivid images of either great memories from the past or positive situations from a future you’d like to have. Regardless of whether you choose the past or the future, be sure to feel these events are occurring right now.

As you are doing this, take special note of your positive, upbeat feelings. When you are ready, extinguish the candle and give thanks for your blessings and the powerful, positive energy in your life.

After the Quick Spell or Ceremony

Now, any time you feel negative energy, remember the power of the dark moon to cleanse and renew. Hold the touch stone and recall the affirmation. As an extra boost, you can keep a pinch of both herbes nearby and use their aroma as reinforcement. These actions will create a positive, lasting link in your mind. Going for Gold: New Moon and Total Solar Eclipse in Leo, 21st August, 2017

August’s total solar eclipse takes place at 28-29 degrees in the royal sign of Leo. It’s innovative, erratic, surprising and unconventional. Radiating electricity, it aims a bright beam of eclipse energy at our world leaders, outstanding individuals, royalty, celebrities, and gold. We can expect manifestations now, and on until next January – possibly even longer.

This lively eclipse activates your chart if you have planets or points at around 25 – 29 degrees of Leo, Aquarius, Taurus or Scorpio. There was an eclipse at this degree of Leo in August 1998 and August 1979. Are these dates are significant for you? If they are, then some resonances are likely to crop up now. If you have a planet at 0 Virgo it’s also energised and in focus.

The impact of all this cosmic shaking and stirring is intensified by warrior Mars in Leo. Mars crosses 25-29 degrees of Leo very soon, reactivating this eclipse at the end of August and beginning of September. There are exciting opportunities and insights to be embraced, but with everything looking pretty volatile some caution is needed.

We can expect sabre rattling and lots of drama out in the world, and in our personal lives too, for at the time of the eclipse, Jupiter is boosting assertive Mars. More ‘might makes right’ philosophy comes from Saturn in Sagittarius, linking with both Jupiter and Mars to create an obstinate atmosphere. There’s the possibility of constructive solutions, but tinderbox tempers may flare up before anyone realises this.

Uranus, heralding rebellion and unexpected developments, makes an exact aspect from Aries with the Sun and Moon in Leo. Fire is blazing, representing imagination, spirit, and spontaneity.

This powerhouse of creative potential and inventive flair flows out through the portals of the Moon’s North Nodes, also known as the fire-breathing Dragon’s Head. But there’s disruption too, for not only is an eclipse a bit of a game-changer, an eclipse galvanised by rebellious Uranus is unlikely to pass without some unexpected upheavals erupting. As with any eclipse, the potential for earthquakes, storms, and volcanic eruptions is intensified. With all this fiery astrology, heat-waves and fires can be anticipated as well.

And there’s more. A glittering array of regal Leo leadership themes are beaming forth, thanks to the great royal fixed star, Regulus, situated in the heart of the constellation, Leo.

At the time of this eclipse, Regulus is rising with the Sun and aligned with the Moon, for it is currently at 29 Leo – 0 Virgo. Ancient Persian astrologers called this star the ‘Watcher of the North’. Its message is one of glory and success, but those prizes come with a stern warning from the gods. Any attempt to exact revenge will result in losing everything you’ve gained. A calamitous fall from power can be very public, particularly in the case of leaders, heads of international organisations, and so on. Nemesis awaits some, while amazing success is there for those who make the right choices.

The total solar eclipse, astrology, and Donald Trump

Many astrologers have noticed that, if the birth time is accurate, Gemini Donald Trump has 29 degrees of Leo as his rising sign. And Mars in Leo is close by at 26 degrees, whether or not we have the right time of birth. The powerful fixed star Regulus – the heart of the Lion – is also rising, signalling great success and warning him against acts of revenge. So here comes the Leo eclipse and its themes to energise his natal chart. What might it mean?

Since this total eclipse is only visible as a total eclipse in the USA (and partially in northern South America), it’s tempting to say that it signifies some (more) dramatic events surrounding President Trump this summer, and in the months ahead. By the time morning twilight starts to paint the sky, your eyes will be drawn to the eastern sky for a meeting of the night sky’s two brightest objects. Brilliant Venus rises first, clearing the horizon shortly before 3:30 a.m. local daylight time. Less than a half-hour later, the waning crescent Moon joins the planet. The two make a stunning pair as they climb higher in the twilight sky. Venus, which shines at magnitude –3.9, appears 20° above the horizon an hour before sunrise.

Distant Neptune reaches opposition and peak visibility in just two weeks, but the view now is essentially the same. The ice giant planet rises during evening twilight and climbs nearly halfway to the zenith in the southern sky by 2 a.m. local daylight time. The magnitude 7.8 planet lies in Aquarius, 1.5° east of 4th-magnitude Lambda (l) Aquarii. You’ll need binoculars to spy Neptune and a telescope to see its blue-gray disk, which spans 2.4″.

On Saturday, August 19th, We Honor the Goddess Astarte

Astarte is the goddess of war and, to a lesser extent, the goddess of love and fertility. In Egypt she was thought of as an especially powerful warrior goddess and was also associated with the most powerful war machine of the time: the horse and chariot.

She was especially fond of people who were good with horses, as demonstrated by one story where she delighted in the fact that a pharaoh’s son was an excellent horseman.

Astarte’s cult was significant in Egypt, and special obelisks were made for the purpose of worshipping her. She is considered one of the major gods of Egypt.

Appearance

Astarte is usually shown as a beautiful, naked woman. Often, she wears a set of bull horns on her head, a sign of dominance and power. Many depictions also show her with a set, or even two sets, of wings. It’s common for Astarte to be shown with overly round hips, which is associated with motherhood and fertility. Sometimes her body is shown as androgynous, which simply means that it looks neither male nor female. Astarte can also be shown wearing a crown.

Because she is considered the mistress of horses by Egyptians, many depictions of her show the goddess on horseback or otherwise in the company of horses.

Family

Depending on where in Egypt you asked, Astarte’s father was either the sun god Ra, or Ptah, the god of craftsmen.

If she is a daughter of Ra it means that she is also the sister of Anat, another war goddess. Astarte is also associated with another daughter of Ra, namely Hathor. Hathor is a goddess of fertility, which is of course an attribute Astarte is also known for.

Her consort was Seth, who is (no surprise) a god of war. He is also god of winds, storms, evil, chaos and darkness. It seems that even some goddesses have a soft spot for bad boys.

Astarte also had a son, according to the Canaanites, by the name of Hauron. Hauron was also later officially accepted into Egyptian religion.

Origins and History

We know very little about Astarte specifically in her Egyptian incarnation, but we do know that she is another version of the Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar.

Astarte was officially adopted into Egyptian religion during the 18th Egyptian dynasty.

As Ishtar, there are quite a few stories about Astarte in The Epic of Gilgamesh. Here, she is shown to be a bit moody and spoiled; in one story, she goes to the gate of the underworld and demands to be let in.

Ishtar was all about love and became pretty obsessed with a few men whom she insisted she wanted to marry. Gilgamesh himself told her no thank you, due to having heard stories about all the other men she had loved and then dumped or hurt in some way.

When Ishtar failed to get her own way, she could get pretty nasty about it. She was rather liberal with her demands and curses, and was known for generally throwing her weight around. The problem is that, although Astarte is derived from Ishtar, we can’t assume that the Egyptian form of this goddess was anything like Ishtar.

Ishtar and Astarte may also be the inspiration for Mary, mother of Jesus, in modern Christianity, since the cult of Ishtar spread throughout the Middle East and beyond, reaching as far as Europe. It’s also possible that Astarte served as the inspiration for the Greek goddess Aphrodite, who bears many resemblances to Astarte.

Modern Influence

As such as ancient and important goddess, Astarte under her many names is often referred to in media such as video games, animation, fantasy novels and film. As Ishtar, for example, she is mentioned in the Sandman comics, as well as in the Conan the Barbarian stories.

The Witches Guide To Saturday

The planetary correspondence for Saturday is Saturn. Matters dealing with the public, farming, family ties, legal matters (such as wills and estates), taking care of debts, dealing with lawyers, financing, joint money matters, real estate, older people, banishing or binding negativity, and getting rid of bad habits all fall under the charge of Saturn. It’s easy to see why “Saturday’s child works hard for his living.”

Saturday’s angels are Cassiel, Machatan, Uriel, and Orifiel. Cassiel is the angel of solitudes and tears. He is one of the rulers of the planet Saturn and occasionally appears as the angel of patience. Cassiel links himself to dragon energy. Regarding Machatan, the only information we get is that he works well with Cassiel and is also a power of Saturn. Orifiel is an angel of the wilderness, a ruler of the second hour of the day, and also associated with Saturn.

On Saturday, the hour of sunrise and every eight hours after that are also ruled by Saturn, and that makes these times of the day doubly blessed. These four hours are the strongest four hours for conducting ritual. Check the local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine your local sunrise.

Saturday’s Witchery

Saturday is a day filled with opportunities to clean up and clear out. So if you are wondering why Hecate is assigned to this day, take another look at what she symbolizes and the magick that is associated with her. That should answer the question.

Hecate was the oldest form of the Greek Triple Goddess, as she presided over heaven, the underworld, and earth. Crossroads where three roads met were especially sacred to Hecate, earning her the title of Hekate of the Three Ways. It’s interesting to note that even after the worship of other goddesses waned, ancient people still worshiped Hecate as the Queen of the Underworld and the Guardian of the Three-Way Crossroad. It was also believed that if you left her an offering of food there, she would grant you her favors. As Hecate Trivia, her triple images were often displayed at these crossroads, where she was petitioned on the full moon for positive magick and on the dark of the moon for cursing and dark magick.

While this last bit of information sounds a little ominous, keep in mind that Hecate/Hekate was known by many titles and is a shapeshifter. Her appearance could and did change often. As a dark moon goddess, her faces are many. To some she may appear as a old crone, hunched over a smoking cauldron and draped in a midnight cape. To others she may appear as a dark beautiful, mysterious, and mature woman wearing a shimmering crown. To some she may be perceived as a maiden priestess. She was called the “most lovely one,” the Great Goddess of Nature, and the Queen of the World of Spirits. This dark goddess knows her way around the earth and the underworld. All the powers of nature, life, and death are at her command.

The Witches Honey-Do List for Saturday

Feel the need for a psychic cleansing in the house? Light up some patchouli- or myrrh-scented incense, and wave the smoke around your house or apartment. It will help to break up any lingering negativity or bad feelings. Crumble up a few dried mullein leaves and create a circle around your home, or scatter it across the thresholds, to keep prowlers away.

Burn a few black candles to repel manipulative intentions or unwanted advances. Add a few protective herbs to your dinner such as thyme or basil. Try growing a blooming cyclamen plant in your kitchen to ward the family and to encourage Hecate’s blessings. Grow deep purple and black pansies in window boxes to encourage the planetary vibrations of Saturn. Let ivy grow up the walls of your home for even more bewitching security.

Saturdays are the particular day of the week for protection and for dealing with more serious magickal matters. Go back over the at-a-glance list and see what components you can add to your spells for today for a little more oomph.

Saturn lends its energies to the last day of the week. Because Saturn is the planet of karma, this day is an excellent time for spellwork involving reincarnation, karmic lessons, the Mysteries, wisdom, and long-term projects. It is also a good time to being efforts that deal with the elderly, death, or the eradication of pests and disease.

Saturday Is Ruled By Saturn

This day of the week got it’s name from the god of karma and time, Saturn. This day is obviously associated with the planet Saturn and is our last day of the week. Traditionally Saturdays are great days for protection, banishing a negative situation, and generally a good time to clean up any magical messes that you have been ignoring. Some suggestions for Saturday enchantments would include:

◦Wearing the colors of the day, black and deep purple. Here’s your perfect excuse to be dramatic and witchy. Empower these dramatic pieces of your wardrobe for protection and strength.

◦Burning black candles to absorb negativity and burning purple ones to increase your magical wisdom and boost your spirituality

◦Adding a touch of garden witchery to your Saturday spells by working with the pansy (in black or purple of course), the morning glory flowering vine, or the cypress tree.

◦Carrying an obsidian, hematite, or jet tumbled stone in your pocket to reinforce your personal protection and to ward off bad vibes and sour feelings. You can also add these crystals to a candle spell on a Saturday night to really increase the punch of your spellcasting.

◦Cleaning your house and cleansing it while you are at it. Tap into those obstacle-removing vibes and the positive, concluding energies.

◦Closing up the final day of the bewitching week with a bang by calling on Hecate for protection and guidance.

Custom Made Magick for Saturday

Protection, removing negativity, justice and balance have been the theme today. As we have just seen you can indeed a perform a binding and not cross the ethical line. Bindings are a more ethical route than cursing someone. But are there other options? Why, of course. I know of some Witches who, when they see a criminal’s face on television or read about them in the paper, mentally pain a white X over a criminal’s face while they say the phrase “I neutralize that person” with intention. This neutralizes the power and harm that the stranger causes.

If there is someone that you personally know who is causing you or your family harm, it is possible to use a photograph of the destructive person. Simply wrap white ribbon around their photo to symbolize you binding them up as you say, “I neutralize any physical or emotional harm that you are causing.”

But if you feel magickal bindings are the way to go, then perhaps your best course of action is to remove all emotion from yourself and the spell when you perform the binding. Just as I stated before, justice—like magick—is a neutral force. For lack of a better term, be businesslike. Wild swings of emotion only make for an uncontrollable magickal energy. Therefore, your best bet is to be neutral. If there was ever a time to be calm and in control, this is it. If you are not sure that you can pull off being neutral, then I suggest that you leave magick alone. It is essential to be in control. How much karma drama are you willing to pull into your life?

Celebrating Legends, Folklore & Spirituality 365 Days a Year for August 19

Held in ancient Rome, the Vinalia was intended to secure Jupiter’s protection for the growing vines and was dedicated to the Goddess Venus. An agricultural festival, to celebrate the start of grape season and wine-making, the first grapes were broken off and offered by the Flamen Dialis to Jupiter and then to Venus. The wine made at this festival would be saved and then opened at the Vinalia Parilia, held on April 23.

The Witches Current Moon Phase for Saturday, August 19th

The Moon today is in a Waning Crescent phase. In this phase the Moon’s illumination is growing smaller each day until the New Moon. During this phase the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. This phase is best viewed an hour or 2 before the sunrise and can be quite beautiful if you’re willing to get up early. It can also be a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the edge where the illuminated portion meets the dark side, the craters and mountains cast long shadows making them easier to observe with a telescope or binoculars.

August’s total solar eclipse falls on August 21 in the US, and, in Australia, on August 22. This is a big eclipse, and, the Symbols of it are rather extraordinary. Much has been said about this eclipse, as it is not only a total eclipse, but, it’s path falls right across the contiguous United States. Click here for eclipse maps from NASA. 

This eclipse (which, of course, is a new moon) is a very powerful one, and, it’s one that is causing a level of consternation and fear. It’s understandable, particularly with the current political and social climate, that people are worried: Everything is so uncertain now. It feels like an incredible turning point, and obviously, we hope that it’s for the better, although, also, obviously, we have a ways to go for things to turn out ok…

Mars has a very strong placement in this eclipse, so, we are facing some very real challenges. In the lineup at this eclipse we have Mars on Leo 21, the Moon’s north node on Leo 25 and the Sun and the Moon (the eclipse) on Leo 29. This means that Mars is going to transit over both the Moon’s node, and the eclipse point in the days following the eclipse. A lot of anger, dismay, upset and determination is likely to follow this eclipse for some time. Cool heads need to prevail, although that is a tall order at the moment. So, we are being asked to find some equilibrium in amongst what’s going on: We have to find a still point of trust in amongst it all.

Also, in the days following this eclipse, Venus will be squaring Uranus, and, we are likely to be making all kinds of decisions about our values, relationships, money issues, directions in the future, etc. A Venus/Uranus square can feel like a big pair of scissors being wielded to cut off those things that are no longer working in our life. This can also extend to our feelings, thoughts and emotions. We can be challenged to change our responses, especially if we’re finding that they don’t align with our true values. Venus, in Cancer, can bring up issues to do with home, family, emotions, homeland, belonging, our definition of our ‘territory’, etc. Furthermore, Venus is involved in three major aspects at the time of this eclipse. In the days leading up to the eclipse, Venus is opposing Pluto, squaring Jupiter, and then, a few days after the eclipse, squaring Uranus. This can lead to a lot of realigning with others, with ourselves, with our objectives. Some friendships, relationships and alliances could find themselves under a lot of strain and some will be jettisoned as we find ourselves growing and evolving, sometimes in ways that can be rather too quick for us to really keep up. In just over 24 hours after the eclipse, Venus moves onto Cancer 27: A FURIOUS STORM IN A CANYON FILLED WITH VALUABLE HOMES, and, we are likely to see some big events take place that require cool heads and cool responses. This is going to be a very interesting couple of weeks.

There’s a lot that could be said here about politics, the world, and, Donald Trump, and, recent events… especially as Trump’s chart is incredibly lit up by this eclipse. I don’t want to talk about him here, but, as a lot of other people have noted, this is an enormous time for him and the US and the world.

And, with Mars and Jupiter sextiling each other, and, Mars and Saturn in a trine aspect, there’s the strong possibility of feeling the need to get organised, get our ‘ducks in a row’, to make decisions in order to live a more authentic life. Even in amongst the challenges, fear and confusion of this time, if we concentrate on what is real, on what we really want, on what we value in our lives, we can instigate some real changes with Mars and Saturn trining. The trick is the right use of our energies, which can be an interesting challenge, but, a very rewarding one if we strive for that outcome. And, a week or so after the eclipse, Mars trines Uranus, which can add to the feeling of change and renewal and bringing in new realizations and realities.

Part of the muddle at the moment is Mercury, along with all the outer planets, being retrograde. This is made even stronger by Mercury going retrograde opposite Neptune, which can cause things to feel unclear, uncertain and downright confusing. Messages can get lost in translation and we can feel rather stymied and ‘held up’. The trick is to see through the fog of the confusing and sometimes bewildering messages or ‘news’ that we receive, read and see every day.

The core issue of this eclipse can be seen from the Sabian Symbol for it: Leo 29: A MERMAID HAS CLIMBED TO THE ROCKY SHORE OF A BLEAK COAST, SHE AWAITS THE PRINCE WHO WILL BRING HER IMMORTALITY. This can be about waiting for the ‘right relationship’ to turn up, and, this might be something that you are truly seeking – that true life mate, and, for some people, there will be the promise of someone special turning up.

However, I see this Symbol as bringing us the possibility of so much more. The true ‘inner marriage’ is more the point of this Symbol – the alchemical marriage with a higher force may be just what we need in order to strengthen our resolve to live a more authentic, fulfilled and worthwhile life. I’ve been listening to a lot of Neville Goddard’s lectures on Youtube, and, I’m seeing the need to relax into finding that true sense of ‘immortality’ within one’s own soul. Goddard’s work is extraordinary and I highly recommend him – his words have shown how we can realize and access the Christ Consciousness within us all. It’s a tall order to fulfill, but, extremely rewarding. Goddard speaks of how our ‘own wonderful human imagination’ creates everything. I sense that this eclipse can bring about, for many, a true revolution in consciousness.

BUT, the major aspect of this eclipse is the fabulous trine between the eclipse and Uranus. This gives us a huge opportunity to find our true authentic path, to tune into and release any negative energies around us, to feel a true sense of liberation and release. It could be that asking the question “what do I really want?” that we can bring much more of what we really want into our lives.

A solar eclipse is a much stronger than usual new Moon, and the new Moon each month marks a time of new beginnings and realisations. It’s like a birth after a time of gestation or being ‘in the womb’. Here, the light begins to return and we can see new beginnings and possibilities. A new Moon means that the Sun and the Moon are both together – bringing a synergy of their energies together. The new Moon is a perfect time to set your intentions for the future. This period is wonderful for planting seeds of whatever kind. What do you want to manifest in your future? Whether you write it down, sing about it or just hold the thought forms in your mind, doing this at the new Moon can realise some fabulous results around the things that you want to draw into your life.

The solar eclipse is on Leo 29: A MERMAID HAS CLIMBED TO THE ROCKY SHORE OF A BLEAK COAST, SHE AWAITS THE PRINCE WHO WILL BRING HER IMMORTALITY – the following is my interpretation from my book The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees Of Wisdom –

At this point in time particularly, many of us feel like we’re on the ‘Rocky Shore Of A Bleak Coast’, wondering when things will get better. When will things get back on a good track and improve? I sense an incredible sense of loneliness and longing in this Symbol, however, it is an incredibly powerful one of finding our ‘immortality’ within. This Symbol can speak of an alchemical marriage: We can find that part of us that is so perfectly complete, regardless of our more ‘outer relationships’, this can be one of the ‘inner marriage’. Interestingly, this is the Moon’s node of Princess Diana.

Commentary: The ‘Mermaid Has Climbed to the Rocky Shore of a Bleak Coast’, shows a woman who has previously felt like she (and this, of course, can relate to a male) merely existed in the waters of life and is now ready to emerge into a more conscious existence as an individual in her own right. She is willing to ‘Climb the Rocky Shore’ no matter how ‘Bleak’ the ‘Coast’ may be. She may have to leave her home and past behind in order to move into a new life, a new relationship or new beginning of some kind. She will learn to better communicate her emotions, thoughts and ideas. In being able to more fully verbalize and express herself and to “walk her talk”, she can find her place and sense of purpose: the ‘Immortality’ that can be achieved in this new reality.

Oracle: You must have belief in your ability to cope as an individual emerging into new arenas. ‘The Prince Who Will Bring Her Immortality’, can show the seeking of perfection in one’s self through relationships. Be careful not to project too much authority onto your partner(or, onto anyone). This can lead to feelings of insecurity and being out of one’s depth. You may be expecting others to acknowledge your existence, possibly feeling invisible until they do. However, other people, and probably someone in particular, may bring you insights into your capabilities, talents and attributes so that you can become more of what you’re meant to become. The female/mermaid, male/prince doesn’t necessarily always translate into these gender definitions. The ‘Mermaid’ may indeed be male, waiting for his “princess” to come to make his life complete. Whichever, how will the partner cope when the ‘Mermaid’ truly gains her own feet and voice? With this new sense of belonging, ideas can be brought into reality in a new world of experience.

Keywords: Coming into conscious form. New ways of being. Transformation. New forms emerging out of the past. Needing, and probably expecting, recognition. Feeling different from the crowd. Learning to stand on your own two feet. Problems with feet and legs. Longing to make an impression.

The Caution: Focusing on social or rational aspects before being ready. Naivety. Being thrown in the deep end. Relying on relationships too much. Looking to the other for validation of one’s existence. Co-dependent behavior..

The Karmic Degree for the Solar Eclipse is Leo 28: MANY LITTLE BIRDS ON THE LIMB OF A LARGE TREE – when I see this Symbol, I often think of Twitter and other forms of social media. 

This Symbol shows many people and voices and a gathering together with those of like mind. There seem to be so many possibilities or ways to go. Although the overall situation is secure and stable there will still be some confusions to resolve. Perhaps you’re forced to be with people who don’t share the same mindset or goals? You may be vulnerable to lots of chatter going on in your mind, or having too many thoughts or people, their voices or their needs to consider. Try to relax and gain some perspective; not all that you see or hear is going to be worth thinking about or pursuing.

Keywords: Gathering with people of like mind. Sharing ideas. Huge structures where people can get lost in the crowd. Big business, government and bureaucracy. Multilevel marketing. Databases. The Internet and chat groups. Books, tapes and cds. Publishing houses. Competition. Telephone switchboards. Trying to gain attention. Twitter.

The Caution: Many voices—some heard, some not. Being confused or immobilized by too much advice or information. Too many sounds. Having trouble hearing the essential truth. A scattering of energies. Not getting a word in edgeways. Everybody talking and nobody listening. Being one of many. Noise and distraction. Staying with the mediocre. The masses. Being invisible. Useless chattering or noise.

The Quest Degree for the Solar Eclipse is Leo 30: AN UNSEALED LETTER HAS VITAL AND CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION – I believe that this degree Symbol is the crux of the eclipse; the Moon moves onto this degree almost immediately after the exact moment of the eclipse and the Sun just an hour or so later.  What is likely to be revealed? What do we need to discuss? What ‘secrets’ need to come out into the open? What secrets are better kept out of sight from others? As many have noted, and I feel to make mention here, this is the Sabian Symbol of Donald Trump’s ascendant.

Commentary: ‘An Unsealed Letter’ is an image of words or thoughts, letters, notes or messages. They have been written, but as the ‘Letter’ is ‘Unsealed’, they have not been ‘Sealed’ in an envelope. ‘Vital and Confidential Information’ implies that important messages and information may need to be concealed from others. Being ‘Unsealed’ shows that it is possible that others would want to peek at (or be shown) what’s been said or written. There could be important papers lying around, or perhaps they are lost amongst other papers and proving difficult to find. It is possible that this ‘Information’ could be seen by the wrong eyes.

Oracle: Getting your thoughts down on paper can lead to greater understandings about people and situations. If there is a message that you wish to spread, you will be able to do it as long as you make the effort to put it into reality. When this is done out in the open anyone can, and will, benefit from it. Communicating in a trusting, carefree way leads to doubts being dispelled. However, are your ideas, thoughts and emotions feeling exposed because you have been too trusting and “worn your heart on your sleeve”? Pausing to reflect can be advantageous. Sometimes we have very strong feelings about a person or a situation, but caution is called for as these can change with time. You may regret someone having seen or learnt what’s been on your mind. The ‘Information’ in the ‘Unsealed Letter’ can be messages, thoughts or ideas that have been thought through and are now being translated to the written word. This also shows writing books, articles, e-mails along with verbal messages of all kinds. The ‘Vital and Confidential Information’ is obviously something important. Should it be shared with all or only a few? Remember to employ integrity in all that is said and thought.

Keywords: Wearing your heart on your sleeve. Shared thoughts and feelings. Declaring what needs to be said. “Dear John” letters. Laying one’s self on the line through writing things down. Diaries. Letters. Penmanship. Messages of intent. Things said out loud. Confidences.

The Caution: Playing games with information. Pretending to conceal for the purposes of deceit. Blurting things out. Not giving any indication of what’s thought. Being upset about having things out in the open. Passing on the secrets of others. Revealing things that shouldn’t be revealed.

The Moon symbolizes: Emotions, moods, mother, family, clan, domestic issues, relationship to home and country. Feelings, sentiments, nourishment, emotional nurturing, monkey chatter mind, lunar and menstrual cycles, clarity of emotions or lunacy. Female energy – yours and others.

 Mercury is on Virgo 9: A EXPRESSIONIST PAINTER MAKING A FUTURISTIC DRAWING 

This Symbol shows the talent or the need to make drawings or plans for the future, or for being able to see what’s coming up. Individuality and originality seem to be the uppermost requirements. Draw up your plans with an eye to what you want or what’s desirable. How do they look? Have you considered everything? Even against the pressure for a traditional response, it is your individual creativity and forward thinking that is needed. Although a wonderful degree often showing talent, the trick can be that you can get drawn into what you’re doing, dreaming things up to the point where you exclude other priorities in life.

Keywords: Creativity projected into the future. Seeing things ahead of their time. Taking chances. Having the dreamer’s disease. Talent. Seeing things in a different way. Being unrestricted by reality. Time machines and time travel. Artists, architects and engineers. Plans, schemes, blueprints. “When I win the lottery…” Forecasting and prediction. Genius. Sketches. Abstract art.

The Caution: Focusing on tomorrow not today. Not seeing the complete picture. Plans that often come to nothing. Being unrealistic. Losing touch with the real world. Losing enthusiasm. Thinking the worst will happen. Making things up that don’t reflect reality. Being stuck on one version of the future. Living for tomorrow, not today. Distorted reality. Getting lost in abstract thought. Being divorced from the real world.

The Quest Degree for Mercury is Virgo 10: TWO HEADS LOOKING OUT AND BEYOND THE SHADOWS – this Symbol can show the confusion and division that is rather rife in the world at the moment. People are feeling rather polarized, and, we may feel like we’re being ‘observed’, or, we may have arguments with others, or, we may feel like we need to see all sides to each story – something rather hard to achieve in this age of misinformation.

This Symbol implies the ability to see things from many sides, not just one. You may be able to, or need to, see things from two perspectives. This can be a marvelous asset, particularly with the Virgo ability to discriminate and make observations. This Symbol can also imply split personalities or not being able to make one’s mind up. Further, it can show situations where two people are checking each other out, but aren’t able, or allowed, to show themselves, they’re “Beyond the Shadows”. This Symbol asks that you look beyond situations and into the light. People may be afraid to take a chance, just ‘looking out’ and not moving forward.

Keywords: Duality of observation or thought. Being able to see both sides of a situation. Fear being the opposite of faith. People peering and peeking. Secret service and government agencies. Gunfights of the old west. Trench warfare. The media, the press, paparazzi, spies, private detectives. Conspiracy theories. Crossed eyes. Eavesdropping. Voyeurism.

The Caution: Confused by duality of thought. Failing to see the integration and cohesion of more than one perspective. Schizophrenia. Fear freezing up positive attitudes. Debates. Stalemates. Making assumptions without the relevant information. Quarrelling. Not seeing the light. Inability to agree. Bickering with others or with one’s self.
