Your Daily Tarot Card for January 25

The Moon

Keywords: imagination, dreams, emotion, competition (the dogs), illusion!

Astrological Correspondence: Pisces

The Moon in all its phases represents the world of dreams, illusions, and the subconscious. Traditionally the symbol of the feminine, the card’s meaning encompasses the maternal, the Great Mother, womanhood, and cycles. The Moon is an ambivalent card, and its imagery signifies the difficulty to see things clearly: simultaneously inspiring and lacking courage, enchanting and bewildering, deceptive and receptive – all sides of the same coin. Signaling fluctuating moods and uncertainty we must pay attention to our dreams, confront our subconscious and deal with the issues that come to the surface in order to progress to a higher level of awareness. Being able to put our imagination and creative talents to good use is an added bonus. Negative qualities such as ambiguity, confusion, hidden fears, and deception can be causes for failure.

Get A Jump On Tomorrow, Your Horoscopes for Saturday, January 25

Moon Alert

We have the “all clear” today to shop and do business. The Moon is in Libra.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Be diplomatic when dealing with partners and close friends today because emotions will be volatile! You might be tempted to lay a guilt trip on someone. Or perhaps someone tries to do this to you? Take the high road. Don’t get involved – and think before you speak.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Don’t be pushy at work today, which you will be tempted to be because you are focused and sold on your own idea. You might even be obsessed about something, especially if you’re trying to improve things or get rid of junk. (And of course, you are right.) Go gently.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Avoid romantic quarrels today. Likewise, parents must be patient with their kids because it’s easy to be on a power trip. Remember – despite your challenges, you are the adult and you have to act like an adult. Kids do what you do — not what you say – that’s why you’re the role model.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This is not an ideal day for a family discussion because people will be opinionated and will want everyone to agree with them. Sound familiar? Ideally, postpone this discussion for Monday. The difference will be dramatic! And people will cooperate.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

You’re hell-bent for leather today, which is why you want to convince others to agree with you. You might want to sell, promote or teach an idea that you believe in. Ironically, the harder you come on, the more you will create opposition to you. Lighten up.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You have strong ideas about money and cash flow today. You might be obsessed about buying something, for example. This is the worst frame of mind to make a major purchase. I know because I’ve done it many times. Ha, ha. Take a step back and assess things. If you wait till Monday – that’s smart.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Today the Moon is in your sign dancing with many planets; however, it is at odds with Pluto, which promotes compulsive behaviour, which in turn, will promote power struggles with others, especially friends and partners. Yikes! (You don’t need this.)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You have an opportunity today to do some emotional self inquiry or self-analysis because you’re willing to take a look at who you are, especially your desires and compulsions. If you can learn anything – wonderful because the ancient dictum “Know thyself” is true.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Avoid quarrels with friends, especially female acquaintances, today because they could get nasty. Is it that important that you have your own way? Admittedly, you believe your ideas are best. (And they probably are.) Do you want to lose a friendship over this? Think about it.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Avoid quarrels and ego battles with parents and power figures today, especially bosses. They will get nasty because people’s emotions are involved. Furthermore, people are blindly compulsive today about certain issues. Where is the logic? Wait until Monday for important discussions.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Avoid political, racial and religious discussions today because they will go South in a New York minute. People are attached to their emotions and their compulsive beliefs today. Therefore, these arguments will be pointless. Get the picture?

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

You will be at loggerheads with someone if you try to convince them to agree with your ideas about shared property, inheritances and insurance disputes. Today people are entrenched in their views because it is an emotional identification. Wait until Monday for important decisions.

If Your Birthday Is Today

TV host/comedienne Ellen DeGeneres (1958) shares your birthday today. You have a bold, generous spirit. You are self-confident and kind. You are also idealistic and somewhat rebellious. This is a fun-loving, social year! Enjoy the blessing of heightened popularity and warm friendships. Be grateful for who you are and what you have. Appreciate the happiness and beauty around you. You will make an important choice this year. Happiness is having alternatives.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a solid day for business and commerce, especially if you have to decide how to deal with a shared project or shared property. People will endorse your ideas. It’s also a good day to ask for money from a bank for a loan or mortgage because doors will open for you today.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You are a social sign and today is a social day! Enjoy the company of partners and close friends. Short trips, appointments and conversations with others will be empowering and upbeat. Today you have the ability to inspire and enthuse other people to do better.

You’re PowerPoint on steroids at work today! Whatever you have to do – you will crush it. You are confident, capable and energetic. Not only that, your enthusiasm will affect those working around you, which is why you are such a positive force in the world today.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You are flirtatious, romantic and playful today! Grab every chance to enjoy fun activities with children and social interactions with others because you are high energy and you feel good! This is also a lucky day for you. Do whatever you can to advance your own interests.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You can improve your domestic digs today because you have energy to burn. Start shoving furniture around or de-cluttering and getting rid of what you no longer need. This is also an excellent day to explore real-estate opportunities. Enjoy entertaining at home.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

If you are in sales, marketing, teaching, acting or writing – you will be successful today because you are convincing, persuasive and enthusiastic! (Where do I sign?) Your optimism will create a positive energy around you that attracts people to you who believe in you.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is an excellent day for business and commerce. What you do today will ultimately boost your income because you can do this. Whatever you do will indirectly or directly lead to an increase in future earnings. Ka-ching! You will also think big when it comes to money-making ideas.

If Your Birthday Is Today

Singer/songwriter/musician Alicia Keys (1981) shares your birthday today. You are intellectual and you set yourself high goals. You have the ability to inspire others to do better. This year is your turn to take a rest. Naturally, you must cooperate with others. Start by looking for ways to practice kindness and be helpful. Be relaxed and easy going. Business and personal relationships will be helpful to you.

Have you been waiting for your most luminous dreams to come true? You’re in luck! The stars are officially here to help. Venus conjunct Jupiter is considered a minor transit, but it’s also one of the most exciting and highly-anticipated in the minds of astrologers and astronomers alike.

Astronomically speaking, the early morning conjunction of Venus and Jupiter on January 22 is of note for stargazers, as it will be visible sans telescope. Venus and Jupiter are the third and fourth brightest objects in the celestial sphere respectively, after the sun and moon. In measurable space, they are of course very far apart, but occasionally they align to create the appearance of a single gorgeous, twinkling megastar positioned in the eastern sky. You’ll have to get up ahead of sunrise, but it’s a sight worth setting an alarm for.

Some historians suggest that the famed Star of Bethlehem was actually a Venus-Jupiter conjunction that was spectacularly aligned. In this case, we’ll be able to see the conjunction for quite a while as it occurs with Venus—by far the brighter of the two planets—46 degrees west of the sun, which is about as far away as she can get; her distance from the sun makes her own luminosity all the more obvious and compelling. Venus will set below the horizon after the conjunction, while Jupiter will rise into the sky and fade away as the day progresses.

Astrologically, this conjunction is equally captivating. Venus and Jupiter are referred to as the great benefics—the most benevolent and expansive planets—so when they get together, conditions are bound to be bolstered. They offer abundance, sparkle, and excitement to everything they touch, effects only enhanced with Jupiter in his home sign of Sagittarius. This is an ideal time for manifestation work and generally living your best life.

After all of the heaviness that came with Capricorn season and an extremely potent start to the 2019 eclipse cycle, everyone deserves a moment to bask in the extravagant shimmer of this conjunction. The mood is lush, romantic, fun-loving, and larger than life.

But there are some cautionary points: superficiality, excess flirtation, and overspending are all potential issues at this time. Remember that all that glitters is not gold; stay in alignment with your true goals and avoid getting side-tracked by some less-than-tangible Venus-Jupiter glitz. Pay special attention to areas of your chart ruled by Sagittarius, as they’ll be supercharged with high vibes during this transit.

So throw on some sequins, get social, prioritize play, and focus on your wildest, most abundant daydreams—this conjunction radiates potential along with light.

Daily Cosmic Calendar for January 25

For the most part, today and tomorrow provide you with an opportunity to catch your breath after the recent blitzkrieg of alignments energized by Mercury. A trio of uplifting sky configurations can turn your fondest dreams closer to reality as the moon in Libra trines the sun in Aquarius (4:50 a.m.), Mars in Aries trines Jupiter in Sagittarius (9:54 a.m.), and productivity-maven Ceres enters Sagittarius (10:09 a.m.) for an extended time-period until November 15. Think along progressive lines on numerous fronts while avoiding a downcast temperament that can temporarily disrupt your forward march as the moon squares Saturn (8:11 p.m.).

[Note to readers: All times are calculated as Pacific Standard Time. Be sure to adjust all times according to your own local time so the alignments noted above will be exact for your location.]

Am I a Witch? All the Telltale Signs

Am I a Witch? All the Telltale Signs

Am I a Witch? Well this is a very tricky and difficult question. What defines a ‘natural witch’ from a ‘self-taught witch’ or a believer of magic? To answer all this we have to go way back and define the essence of the Witches.

Lore and the Arcane Truth

There are so many things surrounding the lore, the reality and the legends regarding the Witches. Sometimes information is deliberately insufficient only because witches have always tried to scare the naive, from messing with their stuff. Only the wise, the brave and the righteous ones were allowed to learn the Craft. Why because with Great Power comes great responsibility! For example when Magical Recipes demanded the ‘five fingers‘ they certainly didn’t mean to cut off the fingers of a living human. They just demanded cinquefoil, a powerful Mercurial herb used for Healing and Money.

What is a Witch?

Let’s be clear. When we talk about Witches we are using a genderless term. Witches can be both males and females. Historically, this term has been used to identify the person who uses the Arcane Arts. Moreover, it has been used to falsely accuse women for ‘devil worshipping’ or ‘followers of the pagan gods’.

Am I a Witch?

So… Let’s see the most important traits.

1. Have You heard the ‘Calling’ ?

This is probably the most important of all the Signs. Once you’ve heard it, it’s impossible to un-hear it. Although you can always turn your back at your true nature and stick with the material Realm, you will always know who you are and who you are meant to be.

The ‘Calling’ is a revelation, a moment of extreme spiritual clarity when you somehow realise your are a Witch and get a glimpse of your true Magical Nature. This usually happens by accident, during times of intense anxiety, desperate need for help, sadness or troubles. However, the Calling may be heard in a very young age or when the ‘time is right’. Sometimes it’s a vision, a sure feeling that you are magical, or a dream or someone who enters your life unexpectedly revealing to you the truth. Other times, it’s an actual magical experience, when supernatural phenomena occur, or even an interaction with spirits of nature or ghosts or maybe deities.

There are many witches who actually plan to hear ‘the calling’ during their next lives by arranging the proper circumstances. Of course this is rarely the case as this kind of spell demand advanced levels of Magical Power.

So have you heard the calling? Good! Let’s proceed!

2. Do you feel Connected with Nature?

The relationship between you and Nature can easily tell how magical you are. Although there are other sources of Magic, Nature is the most common one. So let’s see if you are familiar with these traits, commonly attributed to ‘Natural Born Witches’ :

  • You feel the Energy Shift inside you as the Seasons change.
  • Moon Cycle affects you.
  • Also, you feel connected to the Woods, the herbs and the trees.
  • Natural phenomena like strong winds, rain, thunderstorms charge you and raise your energy and awareness.
  • There is something about you that wants to be around with animals all the time.
  • Likewise, animals are attracted to you.
  • Since you remember yourself, you loved crystals!

3. Do you have Dreams, Memories or Visions of being a Witch?

Well, this may explain a lot. Unfortunately, many Witches suffer from the suppression of their Witchiness due to the ‘demonisation’ of the term. As we’ve all know, a Witch can be a synonym of an evil and envious person who uses his/her power to manipulate and abuse others.

However, most Witches are actually Empaths who suffer a lot when others hurt. Therefore they suppress their magical nature, denying it strongly for months, years or even their whole lives. However, there are times, when they are relaxed, or asleep, when vision and images of Witchcraft and spellcasting pop up to their minds.

This can also be memories from their early childhood, when you were ‘practicing’ your magic with an innocent mind and heart, before the essence of magic gets corrupted by the ‘system’.

4. Do you Think ‘out of the box’?

Do you despise those who censor your Thoughts? Witches are untamed creatures who love Wisdom and dare to reach for it. If you continuously find yourself doubting ‘the truth’ or the ‘religious teachings’ while you realise there is some truth in them, then this is a Witchy Traits. Witches don’t hate religion, as they believe in the existence of Higher entities. Yet they do like to think for themselves.

One of the great saying of Witchcraft is ‘to dare, to do and to keep silent’. The first two part of this saying mirrors the essence of a true, untamed, uncensored witch! One whose spirit is stronger than shallow teaching and hypocrisy.

5. Do you feel your Thoughts, your Emotions and your Words have power?

Most Witches know deep inside that their emotions and what they say actually shape reality. It’s funny as the first time they realise it is when they lie about something, and then suddenly it becomes true. For example, have you lied to your boss of being sick just to get a day-off, and after a while you indeed raise fever or something?

Witches influence and alter reality as they speak or they feel. And this exactly what defines them from all others. Thy might don’t even believe they have this ability but they discover it as they grow older. Of course, it needs practicing in order to learn how to focus this energy and not get drained.

6. Do you Collect Unusual Items?

One of the most ‘weird’ traits of witches is that they’ve always collect things that others think as trash. For example, seashore pebbles, or feathers or shells washed out from the ocean. Witches somehow sense the energy that surrounds these items and instinctively pick them up. Therefore, in most houses of Witches, you can see collections of these Weird items, which are usually considered absurd or useless by their visitors.

7. Do you frequently Observe Synchronicities?

As we’ve talked before about synchronicities, this is a very clear sign that something magical or spiritual is at work. It’s the language of the Universe. How the Spiritworld affects our Realm. You see repeating numbers, or maybe you repeatedly see animals who act as spiritual messengers. The list is endless. However, in most cases these patterns are acknowledgeable solely from the Witch as the message usually intends to have one receptor.

Defining the Untamed nature.

Although we’ve seen some of the most common traits of Witches, there are many different kinds of witches and there are definitely many different traits. However, Being a Witch is most commonly something we strongly believe and follow. Because it’s not the ‘omens’ that make us witches. It’s our Fiery Passion for Magic!

Witches of the Craft’s Daily Journal for Friday, January 25th

Witches Of The Craft’s Northern Journal For Friday, January 25

It is always the morning of my execution……

….I know they will come for me today.
Last night the jailer, pulling up his trousers,
Sneered, “Perhaps you’ll fancy the poll
They give you in the morning more then mine,
Stubborn bitch.” I think
He liked it better when I had strength
And spirit enough to fight him.
He is too stupid to lie just to torment me.
I will welcome death, though the dying scares me…
I was a healer…. how long ago? Oh Gods,
I cannot think straight anymore! And I know
That their gross insults to my body will never mend.
And the pain is constant, and they have sworn me
That I will go to the fire conscious and aware.
My Goddess, I am sick to my very soul with shame;
At the last I gave them screaming what they wanted,
Mouthed any obscenity they asked, told them
What they told me to say. My sanity remains
Only because Your names to with me to the pyre,
And the grave beyond, and only there.
Oh, Beloved, if I could only see you
One last time, that your clean spirit’s fire
Could rid me of this filth and fear….
The crowd gathers now.
I hear them outside, laughing, festive….
Gods grant I will be entertaining enough….
I wonder if those pious souls who in the past
Have asked my help will mourn me?
Well, I shall be glad to quit this stinking cell…
The rats grow bolder as I decline…
Oh, Mother, give me strength!
I hear the guards outside.
“What,” I taunt, “three of you
All for one small half-starved wench?
Indeed, terrible I must be!”
They have the grace to look ashamed,
The youngest one grown pale and horrified
At the light of me; I delivered his wife
Of a fine strong one not many weeks ago.
But now I dare not ask how the child fares.
“Nay, you must carry me or drag me,
My fine bravos….these ruined feet will never
Bear my weight again. I fear I danced too long
With your good priest and his fine Spanish boots.”
They haul me to my feel and the pain….
I will not scream again for their amusement!
I must go naked, then, to my death before these fools?
I would not have them see me so, who danced
Naked for the Goddess, graceful and free,
On winged feet without a trace of shame.
Their avaricious eyes defile me; as their
Twisted priests defiled my body’s temple….
There are many strangers here in the square,
Churchmen and villagers from all the country round….
I am to be a marvelous, far-felt lesson, I see.
They bind me to their stake, too tight, more agony…
The splintering pole claws my raw back,
My shoulders wrenched and cramping, the rough rope
Burning my wrists. My legs will not support me,
And I sag in my bonds, and I fill with terror,
As a pitcher with muddy water. A priest approaches….
Oh, Goddess, must I suffer them even now?
The crowd protests the cup in his hands.
He exhorts them gently; his sect bears mercy towards all,
Malice towards none, and might not even such as I
Be saved at the bitter end?
I don’t know this one. I fight to raise my head,
To spit in his face, for one last shred of defiance….
Mother of All, no! Not you…. here!
How have you come, Beloved,
To trade your green robes for their black,
Your antlered crown for their cross?
Surely I dream, I dream…..
But now I smell your clean scent,
And your dear presence cloaks me in peace.
Rage fires in your eyes, but your pure love
Sustains me, strengthens me and warms me.
You brush the hair back form my face….
The cup you hold gently to my bruised lips I gave you
At our handfasting…. softly you whisper,
“Drink deep of salvation, my dear love,”
And your voice, harsh with unshed tears,
Rips at my soul and my own tears begin, and fully
Do I drink of your deep eyes and the chalice,
And the taste of the flying herbs bursts upon my tongue,
Belladonna, aconite, dark sweet dreams….
They are coming now with the fire.
Almost you linger too long, haunted eyes on mine,
But as sleep steals over me, I see you melt
Safely into the throng.
I am drifting now; I hear my mother singing, far away….
The pain is gone. I am a little girl again…I am safe,
My mother is calling me and I run gladly into her arms….
But in the room I have left behind, someone has been careless
With the supper, Mother, they must turn the spit faster,
For I can smell the roasting meat burning,
And the dinner guests are shouting….

I wake in cold sweat, and cannot drink
From the glass you bring me. Oh, sisters, hear:
Our daughters must not dream these dreams!
We must defend ourselves, stand with out brothers,
And make the arsonists let us be.
Oh, sisters, hear: Never again,
Never again the burning….

Timeline of the witch craze in Europe

Let’s look at a brief timeline of the witch craze in Europe:

906 C.E. The Canon Episcopi is written by a young abbot named Regino of Treves. Regino’s treatise reinforces the Church’s existing stance on witchcraft, which is that it doesn’t exist.

Around 975 C.E. The Church decides that the penalty for witchcraft – which apparently does in fact exist, despite the Canon Episcopi’s assertions to the contrary – is fairly mild. A woman convicted of the use of “witchcraft and enchantment and … magical philters” shall be sentenced to a year-long diet of bread and water.

1227 C.E. Pope Gregory IX announces that it’s time to form an Inquisitorial Court to weed out heretics, who are summarily executed.

1252 C.E. Pope Innocent III carries on the Inquisitions. However, he discovers that a much higher rate of confession is obtained if torture is permitted.

1326 C.E. The Church authorizes the Inquisition to go beyond the investigations of heresy. Now they are encouraged to ferret out people practicing Witchcraft. The theory of demonology is created, establishing a link between witches and the Christian Satan.

1340’s C.E. Europe is pummeled by the Black Plague, and a significant amount of people die. Witches, Jews and lepers are accused of spreading disease intentionally.

1450 C.E. The Catholic Church announces that witches eat babies and sell their souls to the Devil. Witch hunts begin in earnest throughout Europe.

1487 C.E. Publication of Malleus Maleficarum (The Witches’ Hammer). This book describes all sorts of vile activities allegedly practiced by Witches, and also details some creative methods of getting confessions out of the accused.

1517 C.E. Martin Luther leads the way to the Protestant Reformation, which in turn causes a decrease in the number of witchcraft convictions in England — because the Protestants won’t allow torture.

1550 – 1650 C.E. Trials and executions reach their peak. Many of the people accused of witchcraft are actually being targeted in battles between Catholics and Protestants, and others are landowners whose property has been seized by the Church.

1716 C.E. The last accused witches — Mary Hicks and her daughter Elizabeth — are executed in England. Other countries eventually follow suit and stop executing people for witchcraft.

Before trial surveys were made available to scholars, the only way to guess how many witches were killed during the Burning Times was to… well, guess. Estimates were just that — estimates. Since most of the literature available was written by the witch hunters of the Inquisition, the numbers all seemed high. In fact, at one point scholars said that as many as nine million people could have died — which is simply a Really Big Guess.

When trial information was at last made available, historians first looked at all the trials in an area. Then they made allowances for missing records, inaccuracies, and lost court information. Finally, they examined literature from the Inquisitorial records, to see if any major witch-hunt cases took place at the time in that particular area. What they eventually ended up with was a collection of numbers far lower that originally suspected. In fact, modern scholars place the actual Burning Times death toll at between 40,000 and 200,000.

Observe the moon over a few nights and you’ll soon notice a couple of things about it. It doesn’t rise and set at the same time of day (as does the Sun) and the bright portion of its disk changes slightly from night to night; sometimes the bright fraction decreases and sometimes it increases.

Other observations you might make are that the moon looks bigger on the horizon that when overhead; you can see large dark and bright areas on its surface and smaller features as well; you can sometimes see it during the day and occasionally, it turns a coppery brown color.

There’s more to the moon than meets the eye!

The Sky This Week from January 25 – January 27

A total eclipse of the Moon Sunday night highlights a week that also boasts a stunning predawn conjunction between Venus and Jupiter.

Friday, January 25
With the waning gibbous Moon now rising late in the evening, it’s a good time to look for Sirius. The night sky’s brightest star (at magnitude –1.5) appears prominent in the southeast as darkness falls and lies due south and at its highest elevation around 10 p.m. local time. From mid-northern latitudes, it then stands about one-third of the way from the horizon to the zenith. (The farther south you live, the higher it appears.) If you point binoculars at Sirius, look for the pretty star cluster M41 in the same field of view, just 4° south of the star.

Saturday, January 26
Mars continues to put on a nice show in January. Look for the Red Planet halfway to the zenith in the southwestern sky as darkness falls. The world shines at magnitude 0.8 against the much dimmer stars of southern Pisces. (Tonight, Mars slides 0.9° south of the 4th-magnitude star Epsilon () Piscium. A telescope reveals the planet’s 6″-diameter disk, but you likely won’t see any surface features unless you have exceptionally good seeing.

Sunday, January 27
Last Quarter Moon occurs at 4:10 p.m. EST. The Moon doesn’t rise until nearly 1 a.m. local time tomorrow morning, however, by which time it will appear slightly less than half-lit. The Moon spends the morning hours set against the background stars of northern Libra.

Friday is the day of Venus. It takes it name from Frigg, the Goddess of love and transformation. She rules the spiritual side of a person that manifests in the physical. Because of this, Friday is often thought of as dangerously unpredictable. This is expressed in an old East Anglian adage:

The fairest or foulest day of the week.

About The Rowan Moon: January 21 – February 17

Rowan Moon – Represents insight and intuition, protection and blessings.

The Rowan Moon is associated with Brighid, the Celtic goddess of hearth and home. Honored on February 1, at Imbolc, Brighid is a fire goddess who offers protection to mothers and families, as well as watching over the hearthfires. This is a good time of year to perform initiations (or, if you’re not part of a group, do a self-dedication). Known by the Celts as Luis (pronounced loush), the Rowan is associated with astral travel, personal power, and success. A charm carved into a bit of a Rowan twig will protect the wearer from harm. The Norsemen were known to have used Rowan branches as rune staves of protection. In some countries, Rowan is planted in graveyards to prevent the dead from lingering around too long.

Rowan – The Thinker

Celtic tree astrology recognizes Rowan signs as the philosophical minds within the zodiac. If you were born under the Rowan energy, you are likely a keen-minded visionary, with high ideals. Your thoughts are original and creative, so much so, that other’s often misunderstand from where you are coming. This sometimes makes you aloof when interacting with others as you feel they wouldn’t understand where you are coming from anyway. Although you may appear to have a cool exterior, you are burning within from your passionate ideals. This inner passion provides inner motivation for you as you make your way through life. You have a natural ability to transform situations and people around you by your mere presence. You are highly influential in a quiet way and others look to you for your unique perspectives. Rowan pairs well with Ivy and Hawthorn signs.

Chinese New Year (China)

Themes: Long Life; Luck; Fertility; Wisdom; Tradition

About Jun It: This Chinese Buddhist goddess oversees all matters of life generously. In works of art she is depicted as living on Polaris, the star around which all things revolve, including each individual’s fate. She has three eyes for wise discernment, eighteen arms holding weapons with which to protect her people, and a dragon’s head that symbolizes her power and wisdom.

To Do Today: Jun Ti can help you live a more fulfilled life this year by overseeing your fortune and well-being. To encourage her assistance, think silver and gold (or white and yellow)—the colors of the moon and the sun. Wear items in these hues, or perhaps have a glass of milk followed by pineapple juice in the morning to drink fully of her attributes!

On or around this day, the Chinese take to the streets with new year festivities that last two weeks. Eating various rice-based dishes today encourages fertility, respect, and long life, while wearing new shoes brings Jun Ti’s luck. It is also customary to be on one’s best behavior and honor the ancestors throughout the day for good fortune. The climax of festivities is a dragon parade, the beast, Jun Ti’s sacred animal, being associated with ancient knowledge and tradition. So, find a way to commemorate your personal or family customs today to draw Jun Ti’s attention and blessing.

The Magickal Day of Friday

Friday falls at the end of the work week for many of us, and that means we get a chance to relax for a little bit! Mark your Fridays with colors like pink and aqua, and metals such as copper. This is a day ruled by the planet Venus, so it should be no surprise that Venus and Aphrodite – goddesses of love and beauty – are associated with Fridays. This is a day named for the Norse goddess Freyja, so be sure to take a moment to honor her as well.

Gemstones associated with Friday include coral, emerald and rose quartz, and plants like strawberries, apple blossoms and feverfew are also related. This is a good day to do spellwork associated with family life and fertility, sexuality, harmony, friendship, growth. Take advantage of Friday’s correspondences and plant a seed, make something grow, and enjoy your blessings

*Note: There are a lot of disputes as to the origins of the word Friday, because there is still a great deal of discussion as to whether it was named for Freyja or Frigga, and whether they were the same deity or two separate ones. Some scholars believe that while they may have eventually become two distinctly different goddesses, they could have had their origins in a single, common Proto-Germanic deity.

The Witches Guide to Friday

Ruler: Freya, Venus

Colors: Emerald green or pink

Power Hours: Sunrise and the 8th, 16th, and 24th hours following.

Key Words: Love, money, health

It is easy to spot the ruler of this day by its name. In the word Friday, we see the roots of the name of the Norse goddess Freya, a goddess of love and fertility, and the most beautiful and propitious of the goddesses thus the verse “Friday’s child is loving and giving.”

In Spanish this day of the week is called Viernes and is derived from the goddess Venus. Matters of love, human interaction, the fluidity of communication, sewing and the creation of artistic garments, household improvement, shopping, and party planning all fall under the aspects of Friday and its ruling planet, Venus.

Friday’s angels are Ariel/Uriel, Rachiel, and Sachiel. Rachiel also concerns himself with human sexuality and is a presiding spirit of the planet Venus.

On Fridays, the hour of sunrise and every eight hours after that are also ruled by Venus, and that makes these times of the day doubly blessed. These four hours are the strongest four hours for conducting ritual.

Check the local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine your local sunrise.

Llewellyn’s 2019 Magical Almanac (p. 119). Llewellyn Worldwide, LTD.

What is Burns night and who was Robert Burns?

It’s a night that features whisky, haggis and poetry in honour of ‘Rabbie’ Burns – but why and how is it celebrated?

Burns Night, held in honour of Scotland’s most famous poet Robert Burns, is celebrated at the end of January every year.

The night is a way to celebrate the life of the 18th century bard and it falls on his birthday – Monday, January 25.

The tradition started a few years after the poet’s death in 1796, when his friends commemorated his career on the date of his death (July 21) each year.

So began the Burns Supper, and more than two centuries later it is has become a nationwide event with recitals of the poet’s works and a haggis dinner.

Who was Robert Burns?

Robert Burns was a Scottish poet and lyricist who is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland.

Of all the poets who have written in the Scottish language, Burns is most well-known, although much of his writing is also in standard English and a light Scots dialect.

Burns, also known as Rabbie Burns, the Bard of Ayrshire and various other names and epithets is considered to be a pioneer of the Romantic movement.

After his death he became a great source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism, and a cultural icon in Scotland and among the Scottish diaspora around the world.

Celebration of his life and work became almost a national charismatic cult during the 19th and 20th centuries, and his influence has long been strong on Scottish literature. In 2009 he was chosen as the greatest Scot by the Scottish public in a vote run by Scottish television channel STV, narrowly beating William ‘Braveheart’ Wallace.

Burns wrote Auld Lang Syne
His poem (and song) “Auld Lang Syne” is often sung at Hogmanay (the last day of the year), and “Scots Wha Hae” served for a long time as an unofficial national anthem of the country.

Burns collected folk songs from across Scotland, often revising or adapting them, as well as making original compositions.

Other poems and songs of Burns that remain well known across the world today include “A Red, Red Rose”; “A Man’s a Man for A’ That”; “To a Louse”; “To a Mouse”; “The Battle of Sherramuir”; “Tam o’ Shanter”; and “Ae Fond Kiss”.

How do you celebrate Burns Night?
By wearing a kilt? Whether or not Burns would have worn kilts is still disputed, with some arguing that as a Lowlander he would not have worn them, although he was a champion of the right to wear traditional dress.

The full ritual of the night involves whisky, haggis and poetry readings. Those who partake are piped in and then The Selkirk Grace – the prayer of thanks attributed to Burns – is said before dinner.

Let’s Talk Witch – Faeries and Love

The lore of the faery realm has, like the world of humans, traditionally focused on love—both tales of faery lovers and of fey beings who have fallen in love with mortals and sometimes tried to keep them forever in their faery kingdoms. These stories, whether perceived as pure lore or used as a way of explaining past mortal occurrences, tell the tales of true love, of faery temptresses, of lover’s quarrels, and more.

Perhaps the most tragic fey love story is that of the Celtic Cliodna of the Golden Hair. The daughter of Manannan mac Lir, who ruled over the sea, Cliodna was reputed to be the most beautiful woman in the world in mortal form. She loved the young mortal Ciabhan so much she left faeryland to live with him. However, while Ciabhan was hunting, Cliodna’s father sent a faery minstrel to enchant her; she was carried back to fairyland in a magical sleep. She is still seen on seashores, either as a huge wave or a seabird, seeking her lost love; she is said to help parted mortal lovers to be reunited.

Below are two methods of invoking Cliodna if you are longing to be reunited with a parted love.

Name your lost love as you hold matching shells, found on the shore or by a lake, tied together with seaweed or dried grasses. Cast your shells on the ninth wave as it moves into shore. Call your lost love’s name nine times.
If you are landlocked, improvise with matching aquamarine crystals cast into any body of flowing water. Count nine before throwing the crystals into the water together. Call your lost love’s name nine times.
Faery Marriages
Some tales of faery brides who married mortals seem to have earthly verification.

The Gwragedd Annwn are beautiful, Welsh, fair-haired faery women, the same size as humans, living in underwater palaces in lakes close to the Black Mountains. These lake maidens have, on occasion—according to folk lore of the area—taken human husbands, though they rarely stayed with them. Some local families still claim fey heritage.

One Lady of the Lake in Llyn y Fan Fach is, however, said to actually be the fairy ancestor of an unbroken line of Welsh healers and physicians. Even more unusual, this faery legend can be dated. Around 1230, records tell that a young farmer saw three beautiful women dancing on the shore. The most beautiful agreed to be his wife and her father, the king of the lake faeries, came from under the lake to bestow a dowry of fairy cattle. However, the faery king imposed a number of conditions on his daughter staying with her mortal husband. One condition was that she should never be touched with iron, another that she should not be made to go to church, and a third that if her husband struck her three times she and her dowry would return to the lake.

The couple had three sons, but the farmer broke his bargain by striking his faery wife three times (though according to less enlightened male folk tellers, the poor husband only tapped the faery lightly and for good reason). A faery bargain being a faery bargain, off went the cattle and faery maiden, though she did return to teach her sons knowledge of herbs and healing. They became the Physicians of Myddfai, healers to the Welsh kings. When they died, they left a medical treatise, copies of which exist today. I believe there is one in Cardiff Castle Museum.

Brides in Faeryland
Mortal women who married to or were abducted by faeries seem to have had an even less than happy fate.

A woman on her wedding day or night was, according to Celtic myth, considered a great prize by the faeries as she was still a virgin but at peak fertility. For this reason, until medieval times, a woman would be accompanied to the church by identically dressed bridesmaids, so that watching faeries could not identify the true bride.

Some of these faery abductions may have had a less ethereal explanation. In parts of Europe during the Middle Ages, the local lord of the manor was unofficially allowed the use of his serfs’ brides on their wedding night. Rape by wealthy landowners and their sons was a real threat for country women even in Victorian times, especially among servants in big houses. It could be that the story of a traditional return of the abducted bride from the faeries after a year and a day bearing a babe several months old was an acceptable way for a peasant husband not to appear cuckolded by the squire, if the unfortunate bride became pregnant during this abduction. A despoiled bride might have been placed in a distant workhouse during the pregnancy, with the collusion of the husband or a father in the case of an unmarried girl.

A typical bride abduction story made into a ballad was of Colin, a Scot, whose wife was taken by the faeries. His wife, it was said, returned invisibly each day to milk to cows and do the chores; only her singing could be heard. In other versions she returns after a year and a day with a baby. Was Colin keeping his bride locked away because he discovered on the wedding night she was pregnant by someone else, albeit by rape? Or was she truly a bride of the faeries?

Some faery abductions had more serious consequences. A wife who consistently produced sickly boys who did not survive or female offspring for a man who desperately needed an heir, might suddenly disappear; the official and often unquestioned explanation of her disappearance was that she was spirited away forever by the faeries. There are still parts of the world where the value of a woman except as a bearer of sons is low; this is a reminder that it has not that long been otherwise in Westernized society also.

Bridget Cleary
Records from centuries past are obviously sparse, and faery abduction as an excuse for wife murder or beating may sound to be pure speculation. That said, we do know that in Tipperary in Ireland as recently as 1895 Bridget Cleary was tortured and burned to death by her husband Michael. He claimed that his wife had been stolen by the faeries and a changeling substituted. Michael insisted that by destroying the enchanted form of his wife, the true Bridget herself would return on a white horse at midnight. Seven of her neighbors and relatives, including Bridget’s father and aunt, were involved and later convicted of the crime. A hundred years later, Angela Bourke, a professor at University College, Dublin and author of The Burning of Bridget Cleary, stated that the case demonstrated the clash between two different world views, two ways of dealing with troublesome people, two ways of accounting for the irrational, at a time of profound social, economic, and cultural change.

Bridget Cleary’s crime was that she was economically and socially independent by her own efforts, rather than by birth. Presumably, had the case gone unpunished, her death would have been very profitable for her husband and family, who would have inherited her money.

Fairy Queen Temptresses
As the goddesses were downgraded into faeries, some acquired the role of temptresses and abductors of innocent males. In Scotland, myths tell of the Bean chaol a chot uaine’s na gruaige buidhe, “The slender woman with green kirtle and yellow hair”—a fairy queen who had the ability to turn water into red wine and spin the threads of the spiders into tartan. The fairy temptress would, by playing her magical reed pipe, lure young men into her faery hill. Unless they left a piece of iron over the lintel of the entrance, they would be forced to dance and serve the pleasure of the faery queen until she tired of them and sent them home. It is said these young men would find that though it only seemed one night had passed in faeryland, decades might have gone by in the mortal world and the fresh-faced milkmaid sweetheart to whom he had sworn his eternal fidelity was now an aging grandmother.

The most famous young male abductee who seems to have actually gained from his visit to faeryland was Thomas the Rhymer, whose ballad is still performed in folk clubs with Celtic connections. The true Thomas was Thomas of Earlston (Erceldoune), a thirteenth century poet who claimed to have met the Queen of Elfland under a magical elder tree. In return for a kiss he tells how he was forced to go to faeryland with her, though other versions suggest Thomas was more than willing to be seduced. In a few accounts the Queen becomes an ugly hag and the ritual mating of youth with the ancient crone goddess occurred to maintain the cycle of the seasons and ensure the fertility of the land. Thomas remained in faeryland for seven years, though they were only three days in fairy time. He was rewarded with the gifts of poetry, prophecy, and a magical harp.

It has been argued in recent years that Thomas was in fact initiated into a local witch cult and that his visions of faeryland were shamanic.

An Escape from the Faeries
Not all captives were as willing as Thomas, nor the faery queen as willing to part with her mortal lover. One of the most famous tales, recorded by the Scottish poet Robert Burns as well as several other poets, is that of Tam Lin, a Scottish knight who fell from his horse and was captured by the Queen of the Faeries. She bound him with magic and posted him to guard one of the entrances to the world of humans at the well of Carteraugh, close to the borders of Scotland.

Young maidens were warned not to drink at the well, for every time they did and picked one of the roses that overhung it, Tam Lin would appear and demand that either the girl gave him a green mantle or offered up her virginity.

One bold young woman, Janet, decided to see whether the myth was true, and plucked a rose from the well. She and Tam Lin fell in love, and he wanted to escape from the Faery Kingdom to wed Janet.

The next night was Halloween, and Tam Lin explained that there was an opportunity that only occurred every seven years for him to escape. The Faery Ride would take place, when then the faeries moved to their winter quarters (in some versions seen as hell). The faery troop had to ride on horseback along the road. Tam Lin told Janet to wait for him at the crossroads at midnight and to hold on to him, whatever form he took.

As Tam Lin rode by in the faery procession, Janet pulled him from his horse and held tight. Just as he had warned Janet, the Faery Queen turned Tam Lin first into a newt, then a snake, a tiger, a bear, and finally into red hot metal. Janet held fast, and as he became molten metal, she plunged him into the magical well.

The spell was broken. Tam Lin emerged from the water in human form, and he and Janet were soon married.

Faery Marital Quarrels
Faery marriages were frequently as turbulent as earthly ones.

Titania is most famous in literature as the wife of Oberon, King of the faeries, in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In this play she is depicted as petulant, willing to let the seasons go to rack and ruin while she pursues her vendetta against Oberon, who retaliated by making her fall in love with a peasant with a donkey’s head.

Titania was, before she was Christianized and downgraded (like many Pagan goddesses) to faery status, known as Themis the Ancient Greek Titan Goddess of Justice and Order, and the mother of the Fates and the Seasons.

Finvarra or Fin Bheara, who ruled the faeries of the west Of Ireland, was the apparently devoted husband of Queen Oonagh. Oonagh has been described in true Victorian style by Lady Wilde, who collected accounts of faery folk lore in Ireland, as having golden hair sweeping to the ground, clad in silver gossamer glittering as if with diamonds, which were actually dew drops.

In spite of his wife’s ethereal beauty, Finvarra was obsessed with mortal women who, overpowered by the music of faeryland, were spirited away to live there with him forever. He was also said to have a second Queen, Nuala. Oonagh was unsurprisingly not welcoming to mortal maidens to the fairy court.

Other maidens seduced by Finvarra’s music danced all night with him and in the morning, found themselves on a faery hill, possessing knowledge of love potions and of magic—and sometimes a faery pregnancy.

A Fairy Love Wishes Spell
Find a faery tree: a hawthorn, elder, ash, willow, or oak, or in the southern hemisphere, a eucalyptus, tea tree, golden wattle, or the bushy manuka.

Sit beneath or close to its branches on a bright moonlit night during the week of the full moon.

Best of all is the night of the full moon. Look upwards at the moon and feel the positive energies of the cosmos and the moon mother, associated with faithful love and fertility, flowing into you.

Watch the moonlight filter through the leaves and make patterns, and you may be aware of living, moving energies within the branches and leaves.

Touch the trunk of the tree with your hands, and let the life force of the tree spirit flow into you, so that you can feel the pulsating energies of its essence like mild electricity.

Standing and still touching the tree, press your feet down towards the roots, allowing the Earth mother to offer you her fertility and the power so you will find or live with the right mate forever.

Now extend your arms upwards, and draw inwards strength and healing from the moon-dappled leaves.

Move away from the tree and, keeping the moon in view, spiral the tree nine times clockwise (widdershins) in ever decreasing circles, letting your feet guide you. The nine circles of power are an ancient magical device, and if you now stand within the innermost ring, reaching out with just your fingertips to the trunk, you may momentarily make contact with the spirit of the tree.

Ask the essence within the tree, the earth, and the moon mother to bless your love or to bring to you the person who will make you happy. You can also ask for fertility if you are trying to conceive a child.

Spend a little longer watching the moonlight filter through the leaves and amplifying the tree energies.

Bury a silver earring or nine silver-colored coins, the metal of the moon mother, beneath the roots as a token of thanks; whisper your love’s name or call out on the air the one who will make you happy to find you.

Ask a Fairy Wish Spell

I don’t recommend asking the fairy folk for favors or wishes all the time, but this is a nice alternative to the usual wish spell. Only use this fairy magick spell when you have a sincere need in your life, or the fairies won’t bother with you.

A handful of small natural stones
A flat green oak leaf
Rose petals (any color)
Do this spell outdoors on a sunny day. You’ll have to return later so choose a place you have easy access to.

First you have to ask for your wish. Go to a private outdoor place on a bright day, and make a circle of stones. Use regular stones, not crystals, and it should be at least 6 inches across. Write your wish on the oak leaf, and set it in the center of the circle and cover that with a few rose petals. Say the following out loud:

Fairy, fairy, hear my call,
I have a need and that is all,
I’ve made a circle, please come in,
Grant my wish, we’ll both win.

After the spell is spoken, explain what you need and that you’ll leave a gift if your wish is granted. Leave the area and hopefully one of the local fairies will take pity on you.

If your request is granted, you have to go back to the same place and leave them a gift (something sweet or pretty is a good idea). If your original circle of stones is still there, just add your offering to the middle. Otherwise, make a new circle and leave it in the center.

Do not skip the gift step. If you promise the fairies something and don’t follow through, you will regret it. Fairy magick spells can be tricky this way because you are dealing with other beings rather than just your own personal energies.

Witchy Tip # 139 for Thursday, January 4

Many witches believe that turning or stirring things clockwise (Deasil) will bring positivity, luck, and success. Using the counterclockwise (Widdershins) motion, however, can bring chaos and misfortune. These two are often reversed when practicing in the Southern Hemisphere.

Spirit Message of the Day – Ahh…The Possibilities

“A life is not measured by the games that are won, but that you lived in the moment and learned how to have fun.”

“Remember that feeling of being invincible, optimistic, wide-eyed, and carefree? Remember that excited sense of anticipation you have felt for most of your life? Remember plotting your course around ‘the fun’ and saying ‘Let’s Go!’ and ‘Let’s Get Together!’ often? When almost every day was an adventure?”

“First of all, back then, you never even knew you felt like that. It’s only with the clarity of hindsight that you can now see the magic that really did hold you in the palm of its hand. And today, you are still carried, ever so lovingly, by that very same magic. Choose to feel it again, now. It never left you. It’s still there. Don’t let another year or ten or more go by before you recognize today’s magic. Because right here and now, even more so than back then, you are poised to have more fun than you have ever had before! Oh Yeah!”

“Having fun is why you’re here. It’s not frivolous, it’s not just for kids, it’s important! And the art of having fun lies in the appreciating wherever you are, whenever you are. Its potential hides at work, it hides in your routines; it even lurks in bumper-to-bumper traffic. It begins by realizing that every moment that ticks by brings you closer to manifesting your heart’s desires, understanding life’s mysteries, and comprehending that you are bathed in love always. It is a wonderful life and it offers endless opportunities for fun to those who seek even when they wouldn’t think of seeking! Here’s hoping you find plenty of fun this week!”

Today’s message is from author Mike Dooley’s new book entitled Choose Them Wisely Thoughts Become Things!

Sometimes I Just Have to Be Reminded

Burning Times Comments & Graphics

Reminded that we are still feared,
Reminded that we are still associated with all
the old myths and stereotypes
Reminded that we still have a long way to go
to change our stigma and remove the fear people
associate with us.
Most of all calm the fire that burns in my spirit
when I think back to 1950 before I was born,
before I ever got to meet one of my dear family
members because of fear and hatred that ran
through the people’s heart and veins, hatred for witches.

I never knew my aunt but I have been told the stories,
stories that will always burn in my heart and my soul.
How the mob came for her one night in 1950,
her and two other women they took behind the floodwall.
There the mob played judge and juror and passed
sentence on my aunt and the other two women.
“Guilty” was the cry, Guilty of witchcraft they declared.
With that they put the noose around my aunt’s neck
and in a matter of moments, she would be no more.

I never knew my aunt only through stories do I know
her now.
It burns deep within my soul and my heart what happened
back in May of 1950.
My blood boils and vengeance I want to seek
Anger at the ignorance, intolerance and hysteria that took
my aunt from me.
Seek vengeance, oh, yes indeed
But what good would it do,
I can accomplish more by remembering her and
telling her story so others will know her and her plight.
A woman I never got to know but took from me by
an angry mob.

Fight fire with fire, no!
Fight fire with the truth.
Letting the ignorant know our true story and history.
Our persecution throughout the centuries.
Let them know, we have suffered and some have
paid the ultimate price.
We are the survivors, descendants of great ancestors,
We are the ones they couldn’t burn or hang and
We say enough is enough.

Now is our time
Our ancestors paved the way for us,
Now we proudly walk that Path.
Never resting till no brother or sister
has to fear being a witch.
Never again fear being a witch,
How wonderful and glorious that sound
Never again, be afraid to call yourself a witch
Instead proudly proclaim it,
this is my goal
this is my purpose.

My heart burns and my heart aches when
I think back to 1950 for the woman I never

Vengeance I do not seek, truth I do.

Wishing All The WOTC A Very Beautiful & Blessed Friday Morn’! May The Goddess Bless You & Yours Today & Always!

Burning Times Comments & Graphics

Burning Times

The songs are sung to rouse our anger
Of martyred witches gone to the fire
But what is served by righteous singing
When all we do is stew in our ire?
Nine million dead in four hundred years
More in that time simply died of disease.
Why do we dwell on long-passed dead
When we are alive in times like these?

Rise up, Witches, throw off your masks
And cease crying guilt for ancient crimes;
Earth and all her children need us,
For all face now the Burning Times.

In the face of that hostile power,
How did the old knowledge stay alive?
How do we have a Craft to practice?
Our ancestors knew how to fight and survive!
How do we honor our blessed dead?
Slavery threatens all but the few!
We must teach their cunning ways;
Everyone needs the skills they knew.

Rise up, Witches, gather your strength,
And let your power spread and climb;
Earth and all her children need us,
For all face now the Burning Times.

I’ll not cast off science’s works
Witches all forces to Will can bend.
I’ll not accuse, for war and waste,
Some patriarchy of faceless Men.
Men do not cast the only votes;
Women alone do not demonstrate.
Rather than shut out half the race,
Who, if not we, will change that state?

Rise up, Witches, gather your strength,
And let your power spread and climb;
Earth and all her children need us,
For all face now the Burning Times.

I will not blame a Father’s Church –
Blame and guilt are Their tools, not mine.
And even in the schools and churches
Allies there will I seek and find!
I will not answer hate with fear;
Nor with a smug, cheek-turning love;
I will not answer hate with rage;
By strength alone will I not be moved!

Rise up, Witches, gather your strength,
And let your power spread and climb;
Earth and all her children need us,
For all face now the Burning Times.

I will not hide in my sacred grove –
The factories and cities yet ring me about.
I will not climb my ivory tower –
The real world exists though I shut it out.
I will not work for Church nor State
Who serve themselves while they serve us lies.
Nor only for my Witchen kin
But for the family of all alive!

Rise up, Witches, gather your strength,
And let your power spread and climb;
Earth and all her children need us,
For all face now the Burning Times.

So if rebellion means to fight
A State lost sight of why it was built,
If heresy’s to reject a Church
That rules with force or fear or guilt,
Then let us all be rebels proud,
And shameless heretics by creed!
A tyrant’s hand subjects the Earth
More heretic rebels are what She needs!

Rise up, Witches, gather your strength,
And let your power spread and climb;
Earth and all her children need us,
For all face now the Burning Times.

Can Men Be Wiccan?

The more you read about Wicca and Paganism, the more you may feel that contemporary writings are geared towards female practitioners. Does this mean that Wicca is limited to only women, or than men can’t be Wiccan? Not at all!

Why Paganism Appeals to Women

In fact, Wicca — and other forms of Pagan belief — are not limited to one gender or the other. And if you’re reading this and you’re one of the people who is telling the menfolk they can’t be Wiccan or Pagan, please just stop it right now.

Although the exact percentages aren’t clear, you’ll find that statistically, many more women are drawn to Pagan religions than men, including but not limited to Wicca. Go to any Pagan event, and chances are good that the population is going to skew more towards the ladies than the gents. Why is this? It’s often because Pagan religions, including Wicca, embrace the sacred feminine alongside the power of the masculine. There’s a duality, a polarity in Pagan religions that’s not often found in mainstream faiths. For women, particularly those who were raised in a monotheistic, patriarchal religion, this can be a welcome and empowering change — especially since leadership roles are available equally to women in Pagan spiritual paths.

Also, remember that many Pagan religions were originally fertility religions. Wicca itself certainly is, and some sub-branches of reconstructionist faiths are as well. By its very nature, a fertility cult confers high status upon the feminine.

What About the Menfolk?

So what does this mean in terms of the guys in the community? Does it mean they aren’t welcome in modern Paganism? Hardly. Most traditions of Paganism have room for both the male and the female, often side by side and equal. Although there are some groups that honor only a goddess and not a god, far more are dedicated to both a god and goddess, or in some cases, multiple deities of both genders.

If a ritual looks as though it was written with a female practitioner in mind, consider a couple of possibilities. Is it one that needs to have feminine language in it, such as a rite honoring mothers? Or is it simply that the person who wrote it was female, and so it’s got feminine language in it, but is still something that could be adapted to a masculine perspective? For instance, in the Self Dedication Ritual on this site, one section reads as follows: …
