We just added a new line of Parchment Kits and writing inks.
Once upon a starry night,
Our coven gathered for a rite. We all circled widdershins,
As the magic rite begins.
As the glistening moonlight glows,
Our love for one another grows.
A moonbeam dances into our heart,
The shadows wane and merrily part.
We cast spells to heal the Earth,
Giving a chance for nature’s rebirth.
The love fills the air inside the circle,
And just then suddenly, a miracle…
The Earth takes us in her hand,
Away from the site at which we stand.
She places us gently into her heart,
Asking us to make the magic start.
As we raise our energies high,
She sends her pains into the sky.
Tired and weak, she says to me:
“Thank Goddess for witches, Blessed Be!”

Moon in Cancer
The Moon is traveling through Cancer today. Beware of mood swings. Cook some soul food. Cuddle up with someone.
The restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. Feelings of belonging and safety are what motivate us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.
The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.

Saturday, August 19
By the time morning twilight starts to paint the sky, your eyes will be drawn to the eastern sky for a meeting of the night sky’s two brightest objects. Brilliant Venus rises first, clearing the horizon shortly before 3:30 a.m. local daylight time. Less than a half-hour later, the waning crescent Moon joins the planet. The two make a stunning pair as they climb higher in the twilight sky. Venus, which shines at magnitude –3.9, appears 20° above the horizon an hour before sunrise.
Sunday, August 20
Distant Neptune reaches opposition and peak visibility in just two weeks, but the view now is essentially the same. The ice giant planet rises during evening twilight and climbs nearly halfway to the zenith in the southern sky by 2 a.m. local daylight time. The magnitude 7.8 planet lies in Aquarius, 1.5° east of 4th-magnitude Lambda (l) Aquarii. You’ll need binoculars to spy Neptune and a telescope to see its blue-gray disk, which spans 2.4″.
Saturday is dedicated to the shadowy Anglo-Saxon God Saetere or Seater, July 15equivalent to the God Saturn. It is a day also associated with the Norns, the Norse equivalent of Three Fates, and the trickster God Loki. It is connected generally with apprehension, austerity, caution, and excessive self-limitation.

On Saturday, August 19th, We Honor the Goddess Astarte
Astarte is the goddess of war and, to a lesser extent, the goddess of love and fertility. In Egypt she was thought of as an especially powerful warrior goddess and was also associated with the most powerful war machine of the time: the horse and chariot.
She was especially fond of people who were good with horses, as demonstrated by one story where she delighted in the fact that a pharaoh’s son was an excellent horseman.
Astarte’s cult was significant in Egypt, and special obelisks were made for the purpose of worshipping her. She is considered one of the major gods of Egypt.
Appearance
Astarte is usually shown as a beautiful, naked woman. Often, she wears a set of bull horns on her head, a sign of dominance and power. Many depictions also show her with a set, or even two sets, of wings. It’s common for Astarte to be shown with overly round hips, which is associated with motherhood and fertility. Sometimes her body is shown as androgynous, which simply means that it looks neither male nor female. Astarte can also be shown wearing a crown.
Because she is considered the mistress of horses by Egyptians, many depictions of her show the goddess on horseback or otherwise in the company of horses.
Family
Depending on where in Egypt you asked, Astarte’s father was either the sun god Ra, or Ptah, the god of craftsmen.
If she is a daughter of Ra it means that she is also the sister of Anat, another war goddess. Astarte is also associated with another daughter of Ra, namely Hathor. Hathor is a goddess of fertility, which is of course an attribute Astarte is also known for.
Her consort was Seth, who is (no surprise) a god of war. He is also god of winds, storms, evil, chaos and darkness. It seems that even some goddesses have a soft spot for bad boys.
Astarte also had a son, according to the Canaanites, by the name of Hauron. Hauron was also later officially accepted into Egyptian religion.
Origins and History
We know very little about Astarte specifically in her Egyptian incarnation, but we do know that she is another version of the Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar.
Astarte was officially adopted into Egyptian religion during the 18th Egyptian dynasty.
As Ishtar, there are quite a few stories about Astarte in The Epic of Gilgamesh. Here, she is shown to be a bit moody and spoiled; in one story, she goes to the gate of the underworld and demands to be let in.
Ishtar was all about love and became pretty obsessed with a few men whom she insisted she wanted to marry. Gilgamesh himself told her no thank you, due to having heard stories about all the other men she had loved and then dumped or hurt in some way.
When Ishtar failed to get her own way, she could get pretty nasty about it. She was rather liberal with her demands and curses, and was known for generally throwing her weight around. The problem is that, although Astarte is derived from Ishtar, we can’t assume that the Egyptian form of this goddess was anything like Ishtar.
Ishtar and Astarte may also be the inspiration for Mary, mother of Jesus, in modern Christianity, since the cult of Ishtar spread throughout the Middle East and beyond, reaching as far as Europe. It’s also possible that Astarte served as the inspiration for the Greek goddess Aphrodite, who bears many resemblances to Astarte.
Modern Influence
As such as ancient and important goddess, Astarte under her many names is often referred to in media such as video games, animation, fantasy novels and film. As Ishtar, for example, she is mentioned in the Sandman comics, as well as in the Conan the Barbarian stories.

The Magickal Day of Saturday
It’s the end of the week for many of us, so Saturday – named for the god Saturn – is a good time to wrap things up. Associated with the colors black and dark purple, and the metal lead, this day is also connected to the goddess Hecate. Gemstones like Apache tear, obsidian, and hematite are all connected to Saturday’s magic, as are plants such as thyme, mullein, and the cypress tree.
When it comes to magical workings, focus on agriculture and creativity, fortune and hope, protection and banishment of negativity.
Put up a barrier to keep the unwelcome out, eliminate the things that make you miserable, and wash your hands of anything other than your hopes, dreams and goals.

The Witches Guide To Saturday
The planetary correspondence for Saturday is Saturn. Matters dealing with the public, farming, family ties, legal matters (such as wills and estates), taking care of debts, dealing with lawyers, financing, joint money matters, real estate, older people, banishing or binding negativity, and getting rid of bad habits all fall under the charge of Saturn. It’s easy to see why “Saturday’s child works hard for his living.”
Saturday’s angels are Cassiel, Machatan, Uriel, and Orifiel. Cassiel is the angel of solitudes and tears. He is one of the rulers of the planet Saturn and occasionally appears as the angel of patience. Cassiel links himself to dragon energy. Regarding Machatan, the only information we get is that he works well with Cassiel and is also a power of Saturn. Orifiel is an angel of the wilderness, a ruler of the second hour of the day, and also associated with Saturn.
On Saturday, the hour of sunrise and every eight hours after that are also ruled by Saturn, and that makes these times of the day doubly blessed. These four hours are the strongest four hours for conducting ritual. Check the local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine your local sunrise.
Saturday is a day filled with opportunities to clean up and clear out. So if you are wondering why Hecate is assigned to this day, take another look at what she symbolizes and the magick that is associated with her. That should answer the question.
Hecate was the oldest form of the Greek Triple Goddess, as she presided over heaven, the underworld, and earth. Crossroads where three roads met were especially sacred to Hecate, earning her the title of Hekate of the Three Ways. It’s interesting to note that even after the worship of other goddesses waned, ancient people still worshiped Hecate as the Queen of the Underworld and the Guardian of the Three-Way Crossroad. It was also believed that if you left her an offering of food there, she would grant you her favors. As Hecate Trivia, her triple images were often displayed at these crossroads, where she was petitioned on the full moon for positive magick and on the dark of the moon for cursing and dark magick.
While this last bit of information sounds a little ominous, keep in mind that Hecate/Hekate was known by many titles and is a shapeshifter. Her appearance could and did change often. As a dark moon goddess, her faces are many. To some she may appear as a old crone, hunched over a smoking cauldron and draped in a midnight cape. To others she may appear as a dark beautiful, mysterious, and mature woman wearing a shimmering crown. To some she may be perceived as a maiden priestess. She was called the “most lovely one,” the Great Goddess of Nature, and the Queen of the World of Spirits. This dark goddess knows her way around the earth and the underworld. All the powers of nature, life, and death are at her command.

The Witches Honey-Do List for Saturday
Feel the need for a psychic cleansing in the house? Light up some patchouli- or myrrh-scented incense, and wave the smoke around your house or apartment. It will help to break up any lingering negativity or bad feelings. Crumble up a few dried mullein leaves and create a circle around your home, or scatter it across the thresholds, to keep prowlers away.
Burn a few black candles to repel manipulative intentions or unwanted advances. Add a few protective herbs to your dinner such as thyme or basil. Try growing a blooming cyclamen plant in your kitchen to ward the family and to encourage Hecate’s blessings. Grow deep purple and black pansies in window boxes to encourage the planetary vibrations of Saturn. Let ivy grow up the walls of your home for even more bewitching security.
Saturdays are the particular day of the week for protection and for dealing with more serious magickal matters. Go back over the at-a-glance list and see what components you can add to your spells for today for a little more oomph.
Meditate on Hecate to learn her lessons and include some dark goddess wisdom into your Craft. As a Witch, you already know that you have power-the power to effect real change in your life. Working with Hecate can teach you how and when to best use this power for the greater good.

Saturn lends its energies to the last day of the week. Because Saturn is the planet of karma, this day is an excellent time for spellwork involving reincarnation, karmic lessons, the Mysteries, wisdom, and long-term projects. It is also a good time to being efforts that deal with the elderly, death, or the eradication of pests and disease.
Saturday Is Ruled By Saturn
This day of the week got it’s name from the god of karma and time, Saturn. This day is obviously associated with the planet Saturn and is our last day of the week. Traditionally Saturdays are great days for protection, banishing a negative situation, and generally a good time to clean up any magical messes that you have been ignoring. Some suggestions for Saturday enchantments would include:
◦Wearing the colors of the day, black and deep purple. Here’s your perfect excuse to be dramatic and witchy. Empower these dramatic pieces of your wardrobe for protection and strength.
◦Burning black candles to absorb negativity and burning purple ones to increase your magical wisdom and boost your spirituality
◦Adding a touch of garden witchery to your Saturday spells by working with the pansy (in black or purple of course), the morning glory flowering vine, or the cypress tree.
◦Carrying an obsidian, hematite, or jet tumbled stone in your pocket to reinforce your personal protection and to ward off bad vibes and sour feelings. You can also add these crystals to a candle spell on a Saturday night to really increase the punch of your spellcasting.
◦Cleaning your house and cleansing it while you are at it. Tap into those obstacle-removing vibes and the positive, concluding energies.
◦Closing up the final day of the bewitching week with a bang by calling on Hecate for protection and guidance.
Custom Made Magick for Saturday
Protection, removing negativity, justice and balance have been the theme today. As we have just seen you can indeed a perform a binding and not cross the ethical line. Bindings are a more ethical route than cursing someone. But are there other options? Why, of course. I know of some Witches who, when they see a criminal’s face on television or read about them in the paper, mentally pain a white X over a criminal’s face while they say the phrase “I neutralize that person” with intention. This neutralizes the power and harm that the stranger causes.
If there is someone that you personally know who is causing you or your family harm, it is possible to use a photograph of the destructive person. Simply wrap white ribbon around their photo to symbolize you binding them up as you say, “I neutralize any physical or emotional harm that you are causing.”
But if you feel magickal bindings are the way to go, then perhaps your best course of action is to remove all emotion from yourself and the spell when you perform the binding. Just as I stated before, justice—like magick—is a neutral force. For lack of a better term, be businesslike. Wild swings of emotion only make for an uncontrollable magickal energy. Therefore, your best bet is to be neutral. If there was ever a time to be calm and in control, this is it. If you are not sure that you can pull off being neutral, then I suggest that you leave magick alone. It is essential to be in control. How much karma drama are you willing to pull into your life?

Saturday and the Perfect Corresponding Spell
The theme of the day is protection. Here is a spell for you to try to keep you feeling safe & sound at all times.
If you are the sort of person who really wants or needs a fast crystal protection spell that is no muss, no fuss, then try out this Saturday witchery while working with your black tourmaline. Hold the black tourmaline jewelry piece or the raw chunks of stone in your hands. Visualize what it is that you want them to do. Then repeat the following spell verse three times:
Lovely tourmaline crystal so chunky and black
Reflect all negativity right out and back
While I am inside of this magickal boundary
I am protected from any psychic vampirey
By the element of earth, keep me free from the mire
May this crystal spell grant the outcome I desire.
Now go ahead and work with the black tourmaline. I bet that you will notice a huge difference.

Vinalia Rustica
Held in ancient Rome, the Vinalia was intended to secure Jupiter’s protection for the growing vines and was dedicated to the Goddess Venus. An agricultural festival, to celebrate the start of grape season and wine-making, the first grapes were broken off and offered by the Flamen Dialis to Jupiter and then to Venus. The wine made at this festival would be saved and then opened at the Vinalia Parilia, held on April 23.

Waning Crescent Illumination: 7%
The Moon today is in a Waning Crescent phase. In this phase the Moon’s illumination is growing smaller each day until the New Moon. During this phase the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. This phase is best viewed an hour or 2 before the sunrise and can be quite beautiful if you’re willing to get up early. It can also be a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the edge where the illuminated portion meets the dark side, the craters and mountains cast long shadows making them easier to observe with a telescope or binoculars.

August’s total solar eclipse falls on August 21 in the US, and, in Australia, on August 22. This is a big eclipse, and, the Symbols of it are rather extraordinary. Much has been said about this eclipse, as it is not only a total eclipse, but, it’s path falls right across the contiguous United States. Click here for eclipse maps from NASA.
This eclipse (which, of course, is a new moon) is a very powerful one, and, it’s one that is causing a level of consternation and fear. It’s understandable, particularly with the current political and social climate, that people are worried: Everything is so uncertain now. It feels like an incredible turning point, and obviously, we hope that it’s for the better, although, also, obviously, we have a ways to go for things to turn out ok…
Mars has a very strong placement in this eclipse, so, we are facing some very real challenges. In the lineup at this eclipse we have Mars on Leo 21, the Moon’s north node on Leo 25 and the Sun and the Moon (the eclipse) on Leo 29. This means that Mars is going to transit over both the Moon’s node, and the eclipse point in the days following the eclipse. A lot of anger, dismay, upset and determination is likely to follow this eclipse for some time. Cool heads need to prevail, although that is a tall order at the moment. So, we are being asked to find some equilibrium in amongst what’s going on: We have to find a still point of trust in amongst it all.
Also, in the days following this eclipse, Venus will be squaring Uranus, and, we are likely to be making all kinds of decisions about our values, relationships, money issues, directions in the future, etc. A Venus/Uranus square can feel like a big pair of scissors being wielded to cut off those things that are no longer working in our life. This can also extend to our feelings, thoughts and emotions. We can be challenged to change our responses, especially if we’re finding that they don’t align with our true values. Venus, in Cancer, can bring up issues to do with home, family, emotions, homeland, belonging, our definition of our ‘territory’, etc. Furthermore, Venus is involved in three major aspects at the time of this eclipse. In the days leading up to the eclipse, Venus is opposing Pluto, squaring Jupiter, and then, a few days after the eclipse, squaring Uranus. This can lead to a lot of realigning with others, with ourselves, with our objectives. Some friendships, relationships and alliances could find themselves under a lot of strain and some will be jettisoned as we find ourselves growing and evolving, sometimes in ways that can be rather too quick for us to really keep up. In just over 24 hours after the eclipse, Venus moves onto Cancer 27: A FURIOUS STORM IN A CANYON FILLED WITH VALUABLE HOMES, and, we are likely to see some big events take place that require cool heads and cool responses. This is going to be a very interesting couple of weeks.
There’s a lot that could be said here about politics, the world, and, Donald Trump, and, recent events… especially as Trump’s chart is incredibly lit up by this eclipse. I don’t want to talk about him here, but, as a lot of other people have noted, this is an enormous time for him and the US and the world.
And, with Mars and Jupiter sextiling each other, and, Mars and Saturn in a trine aspect, there’s the strong possibility of feeling the need to get organised, get our ‘ducks in a row’, to make decisions in order to live a more authentic life. Even in amongst the challenges, fear and confusion of this time, if we concentrate on what is real, on what we really want, on what we value in our lives, we can instigate some real changes with Mars and Saturn trining. The trick is the right use of our energies, which can be an interesting challenge, but, a very rewarding one if we strive for that outcome. And, a week or so after the eclipse, Mars trines Uranus, which can add to the feeling of change and renewal and bringing in new realizations and realities.
Part of the muddle at the moment is Mercury, along with all the outer planets, being retrograde. This is made even stronger by Mercury going retrograde opposite Neptune, which can cause things to feel unclear, uncertain and downright confusing. Messages can get lost in translation and we can feel rather stymied and ‘held up’. The trick is to see through the fog of the confusing and sometimes bewildering messages or ‘news’ that we receive, read and see every day.
The core issue of this eclipse can be seen from the Sabian Symbol for it: Leo 29: A MERMAID HAS CLIMBED TO THE ROCKY SHORE OF A BLEAK COAST, SHE AWAITS THE PRINCE WHO WILL BRING HER IMMORTALITY. This can be about waiting for the ‘right relationship’ to turn up, and, this might be something that you are truly seeking – that true life mate, and, for some people, there will be the promise of someone special turning up.
However, I see this Symbol as bringing us the possibility of so much more. The true ‘inner marriage’ is more the point of this Symbol – the alchemical marriage with a higher force may be just what we need in order to strengthen our resolve to live a more authentic, fulfilled and worthwhile life. I’ve been listening to a lot of Neville Goddard’s lectures on Youtube, and, I’m seeing the need to relax into finding that true sense of ‘immortality’ within one’s own soul. Goddard’s work is extraordinary and I highly recommend him – his words have shown how we can realize and access the Christ Consciousness within us all. It’s a tall order to fulfill, but, extremely rewarding. Goddard speaks of how our ‘own wonderful human imagination’ creates everything. I sense that this eclipse can bring about, for many, a true revolution in consciousness.
BUT, the major aspect of this eclipse is the fabulous trine between the eclipse and Uranus. This gives us a huge opportunity to find our true authentic path, to tune into and release any negative energies around us, to feel a true sense of liberation and release. It could be that asking the question “what do I really want?” that we can bring much more of what we really want into our lives.
There’s more that can be said about all of this, but, it is covered in the list of Sabian Symbols for the planets below.
A solar eclipse is a much stronger than usual new Moon, and the new Moon each month marks a time of new beginnings and realisations. It’s like a birth after a time of gestation or being ‘in the womb’. Here, the light begins to return and we can see new beginnings and possibilities. A new Moon means that the Sun and the Moon are both together – bringing a synergy of their energies together. The new Moon is a perfect time to set your intentions for the future. This period is wonderful for planting seeds of whatever kind. What do you want to manifest in your future? Whether you write it down, sing about it or just hold the thought forms in your mind, doing this at the new Moon can realise some fabulous results around the things that you want to draw into your life.
The solar eclipse is onLeo 29: A MERMAID HAS CLIMBED TO THE ROCKY SHORE OF A BLEAK COAST, SHE AWAITS THE PRINCE WHO WILL BRING HER IMMORTALITY – the following is my interpretation from my book The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees Of Wisdom –
At this point in time particularly, many of us feel like we’re on the ‘Rocky Shore Of A Bleak Coast’, wondering when things will get better. When will things get back on a good track and improve? I sense an incredible sense of loneliness and longing in this Symbol, however, it is an incredibly powerful one of finding our ‘immortality’ within. This Symbol can speak of an alchemical marriage: We can find that part of us that is so perfectly complete, regardless of our more ‘outer relationships’, this can be one of the ‘inner marriage’. Interestingly, this is the Moon’s node of Princess Diana.
Commentary: The ‘Mermaid Has Climbed to the Rocky Shore of a Bleak Coast’, shows a woman who has previously felt like she (and this, of course, can relate to a male) merely existed in the waters of life and is now ready to emerge into a more conscious existence as an individual in her own right. She is willing to ‘Climb the Rocky Shore’ no matter how ‘Bleak’ the ‘Coast’ may be. She may have to leave her home and past behind in order to move into a new life, a new relationship or new beginning of some kind. She will learn to better communicate her emotions, thoughts and ideas. In being able to more fully verbalize and express herself and to “walk her talk”, she can find her place and sense of purpose: the ‘Immortality’ that can be achieved in this new reality.
Oracle: You must have belief in your ability to cope as an individual emerging into new arenas. ‘The Prince Who Will Bring Her Immortality’, can show the seeking of perfection in one’s self through relationships. Be careful not to project too much authority onto your partner(or, onto anyone). This can lead to feelings of insecurity and being out of one’s depth. You may be expecting others to acknowledge your existence, possibly feeling invisible until they do. However, other people, and probably someone in particular, may bring you insights into your capabilities, talents and attributes so that you can become more of what you’re meant to become. The female/mermaid, male/prince doesn’t necessarily always translate into these gender definitions. The ‘Mermaid’ may indeed be male, waiting for his “princess” to come to make his life complete. Whichever, how will the partner cope when the ‘Mermaid’ truly gains her own feet and voice? With this new sense of belonging, ideas can be brought into reality in a new world of experience.
Keywords: Coming into conscious form. New ways of being. Transformation. New forms emerging out of the past. Needing, and probably expecting, recognition. Feeling different from the crowd. Learning to stand on your own two feet. Problems with feet and legs. Longing to make an impression.
The Caution: Focusing on social or rational aspects before being ready. Naivety. Being thrown in the deep end. Relying on relationships too much. Looking to the other for validation of one’s existence. Co-dependent behavior..
The Karmic Degree for the Solar Eclipse is Leo 28: MANY LITTLE BIRDS ON THE LIMB OF A LARGE TREE – when I see this Symbol, I often think of Twitter and other forms of social media.
This Symbol shows many people and voices and a gathering together with those of like mind. There seem to be so many possibilities or ways to go. Although the overall situation is secure and stable there will still be some confusions to resolve. Perhaps you’re forced to be with people who don’t share the same mindset or goals? You may be vulnerable to lots of chatter going on in your mind, or having too many thoughts or people, their voices or their needs to consider. Try to relax and gain some perspective; not all that you see or hear is going to be worth thinking about or pursuing.
Keywords: Gathering with people of like mind. Sharing ideas. Huge structures where people can get lost in the crowd. Big business, government and bureaucracy. Multilevel marketing. Databases. The Internet and chat groups. Books, tapes and cds. Publishing houses. Competition. Telephone switchboards. Trying to gain attention. Twitter.
The Caution: Many voices—some heard, some not. Being confused or immobilized by too much advice or information. Too many sounds. Having trouble hearing the essential truth. A scattering of energies. Not getting a word in edgeways. Everybody talking and nobody listening. Being one of many. Noise and distraction. Staying with the mediocre. The masses. Being invisible. Useless chattering or noise.
The Quest Degree for the Solar Eclipse is Leo 30: AN UNSEALED LETTER HAS VITAL AND CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION – I believe that this degree Symbol is the crux of the eclipse; the Moon moves onto this degree almost immediately after the exact moment of the eclipse and the Sun just an hour or so later. What is likely to be revealed? What do we need to discuss? What ‘secrets’ need to come out into the open? What secrets are better kept out of sight from others? As many have noted, and I feel to make mention here, this is the Sabian Symbol of Donald Trump’s ascendant.
Commentary: ‘An Unsealed Letter’ is an image of words or thoughts, letters, notes or messages. They have been written, but as the ‘Letter’ is ‘Unsealed’, they have not been ‘Sealed’ in an envelope. ‘Vital and Confidential Information’ implies that important messages and information may need to be concealed from others. Being ‘Unsealed’ shows that it is possible that others would want to peek at (or be shown) what’s been said or written. There could be important papers lying around, or perhaps they are lost amongst other papers and proving difficult to find. It is possible that this ‘Information’ could be seen by the wrong eyes.
Oracle: Getting your thoughts down on paper can lead to greater understandings about people and situations. If there is a message that you wish to spread, you will be able to do it as long as you make the effort to put it into reality. When this is done out in the open anyone can, and will, benefit from it. Communicating in a trusting, carefree way leads to doubts being dispelled. However, are your ideas, thoughts and emotions feeling exposed because you have been too trusting and “worn your heart on your sleeve”? Pausing to reflect can be advantageous. Sometimes we have very strong feelings about a person or a situation, but caution is called for as these can change with time. You may regret someone having seen or learnt what’s been on your mind. The ‘Information’ in the ‘Unsealed Letter’ can be messages, thoughts or ideas that have been thought through and are now being translated to the written word. This also shows writing books, articles, e-mails along with verbal messages of all kinds. The ‘Vital and Confidential Information’ is obviously something important. Should it be shared with all or only a few? Remember to employ integrity in all that is said and thought.
Keywords: Wearing your heart on your sleeve. Shared thoughts and feelings. Declaring what needs to be said. “Dear John” letters. Laying one’s self on the line through writing things down. Diaries. Letters. Penmanship. Messages of intent. Things said out loud. Confidences.
The Caution: Playing games with information. Pretending to conceal for the purposes of deceit. Blurting things out. Not giving any indication of what’s thought. Being upset about having things out in the open. Passing on the secrets of others. Revealing things that shouldn’t be revealed.
The Moon symbolizes: Emotions, moods, mother, family, clan, domestic issues, relationship to home and country. Feelings, sentiments, nourishment, emotional nurturing, monkey chatter mind, lunar and menstrual cycles, clarity of emotions or lunacy. Female energy – yours and others.
Mercury is on Virgo 9: A EXPRESSIONIST PAINTER MAKING A FUTURISTIC DRAWING
This Symbol shows the talent or the need to make drawings or plans for the future, or for being able to see what’s coming up. Individuality and originality seem to be the uppermost requirements. Draw up your plans with an eye to what you want or what’s desirable. How do they look? Have you considered everything? Even against the pressure for a traditional response, it is your individual creativity and forward thinking that is needed. Although a wonderful degree often showing talent, the trick can be that you can get drawn into what you’re doing, dreaming things up to the point where you exclude other priorities in life.
Keywords: Creativity projected into the future. Seeing things ahead of their time. Taking chances. Having the dreamer’s disease. Talent. Seeing things in a different way. Being unrestricted by reality. Time machines and time travel. Artists, architects and engineers. Plans, schemes, blueprints. “When I win the lottery…” Forecasting and prediction. Genius. Sketches. Abstract art.
The Caution: Focusing on tomorrow not today. Not seeing the complete picture. Plans that often come to nothing. Being unrealistic. Losing touch with the real world. Losing enthusiasm. Thinking the worst will happen. Making things up that don’t reflect reality. Being stuck on one version of the future. Living for tomorrow, not today. Distorted reality. Getting lost in abstract thought. Being divorced from the real world.
The Quest Degree for Mercury is Virgo 10: TWO HEADS LOOKING OUT AND BEYOND THE SHADOWS – this Symbol can show the confusion and division that is rather rife in the world at the moment. People are feeling rather polarized, and, we may feel like we’re being ‘observed’, or, we may have arguments with others, or, we may feel like we need to see all sides to each story – something rather hard to achieve in this age of misinformation.
This Symbol implies the ability to see things from many sides, not just one. You may be able to, or need to, see things from two perspectives. This can be a marvelous asset, particularly with the Virgo ability to discriminate and make observations. This Symbol can also imply split personalities or not being able to make one’s mind up. Further, it can show situations where two people are checking each other out, but aren’t able, or allowed, to show themselves, they’re “Beyond the Shadows”. This Symbol asks that you look beyond situations and into the light. People may be afraid to take a chance, just ‘looking out’ and not moving forward.
Keywords: Duality of observation or thought. Being able to see both sides of a situation. Fear being the opposite of faith. People peering and peeking. Secret service and government agencies. Gunfights of the old west. Trench warfare. The media, the press, paparazzi, spies, private detectives. Conspiracy theories. Crossed eyes. Eavesdropping. Voyeurism.
The Caution: Confused by duality of thought. Failing to see the integration and cohesion of more than one perspective. Schizophrenia. Fear freezing up positive attitudes. Debates. Stalemates. Making assumptions without the relevant information. Quarrelling. Not seeing the light. Inability to agree. Bickering with others or with one’s self.
Mercury symbolizes: Mind, thought, communication, memory, expression, intelligence. News, exchanges, chatting, conversations, short journeys, connections with others, telephones, emails, siblings, neighbors, the reasoning mind. Day-to-day activities. Cars, keys, small animals.
Venus is on Cancer 25: LEADER OF PEOPLE WRAPPED IN AN INVISIBLE CLOAK OF POWER – this is a very powerful degree, and, it can be very transformative and healing when we align with a sense of our own inner power. Of course, we will see instances of this shown to us in the outer world, particularly on the political stage. This Symbol can show someone who is on the right path, incredibly strong and centered for right action, but, it can also show people who are ‘too big for their own boots’ – strong arming and showing off when perhaps showing humility and restraint may be the true order of the day.
This Symbol points to ‘Invisible’ levels of ‘Power’ that are cloaking someone. It could show someone who’s powerful, a leader, someone to be reckoned with. There is often an unavoidable need to accept powerful responsibilities and to respond rationally to anything that needs to be done. It is almost as though this has been thrust upon you, but it is as much because you have placed yourself in this position of power and responsibility and you both understand and accept the consequences of the role. Take care not to lord it over others. If this is not about you, it can be about someone in your environment.
Keywords: Leadership and its honors and responsibilities. Powerful descent of energies taking over one’s being. Feeling invincible-one can do nothing wrong. Hugging and being hugged. Sore shoulders. Shawls and cloaks that empower or coverup. Gurus. Quiet, unassuming strength. Charisma, strength and presence. Beautiful coats. Furs. Huge personalities. A man who lives right, and is right, has more power in his silence than another has by his words. Phillips Brooks
The Caution: Outer shows of superiority. Presuming oneself to be more than one is. Megalomania. Not owning one’s magnificence. Being pushy. The weight of the world on one’s shoulders. Abuse of power. Not owning one’s magnificence. Having the weight of the world on your shoulders. People on power trips. Lording it over others.
The Karmic Degree for Venus is Cancer 24: A WOMAN AND TWO MEN (OR A MAN AND TWO WOMEN) CAST AWAY ON A SMALL ISLAND
This Symbol shows people seem locked into some situation, environment or relationship that pushes the boundaries of relationships. There could be too many people, as in relationship triangles, or there could just be too many people to take into consideration as sometimes happens, i.e., when a child intrudes too much into a relationship between adults. You may find that it is difficult to choose what you want as others may have something different to say. Your wants seem to vacillate from one extreme to the other. Perhaps there is a need to get away from those trying to confuse you with conflicting views, although this may sometimes be impossible.
Keywords: Feelings of being fenced in. Too little room to move. Lack of privacy. Relationship triangles. Claustrophobia. Isolation. Love affairs. Too many people or having no one. Having to schedule people’s needs. Competition and rivalry. Polygamy.
The Caution: Not seeing the whole picture. Fighting over ‘territory’. Having too many people to consider. The specter of ‘someone else’. Jealousy. Infidelity. Unacceptable relationships. Sexual infidelity. Misleading relationships. Being shut out of relationship. Fickleness. Not being able to choose. Having too many people to consider. Only being ‘the third wheel’ in a relationship.
The Quest Degree for Venus is Cancer 26: GUESTS ARE READING IN THE LIBRARY OF A LUXURIOUS HOME
This Symbol points to the desire, or the ability, to relax and retire into luxury, being able to do what one wants and to share quiet moments of reflection and sharing with others. There is an opportunity to relax and enjoy your self here and there is time to catch up on the attitudes of others without any pressure. Sharing your ideas, time and energy with others can be rewarding on many levels. This Symbol implies both luxury and indulgence. There does, however, need to be a caution against self-indulgence, as time can slip away if you’re not paying attention to what needs to be done around you.
Keywords: Sharing of thoughts and ideas in an environment of social privilege. Social protocol that says what one should be digesting, emotionally, intellectually or physically. Libraries. Hotel reading rooms. Chatting quietly. Books, magazines. Quiet, knowing atmosphere. Learning and sharing ideas. Having friends over. Relaxing. Taking time off. Study groups.
The Caution: Relating on a superficial level or not being able to relate at all because of social expectations. Being told to “keep quiet”. Not saying what one really feels. Focusing on the mind, not the heart. Not being invited to the inner circle. Special privileges for the few.
Venus symbolizes: Relatedness, cooperation, what attracts you. The experience of sweetness, beauty or delight. Social interactions, love, friends, how you reach out to people. Feminine persona, relationship with mother and females. Money, possessions, sense of values.
Mars is on Leo 21: INTOXICATED CHICKENS DIZZILY FLAP THEIR WINGS TRYING TO FLY
The very best addictive drugs are produced by our bodies when we’re in romantic/erotic love. Barbara Sher
This Symbol can indicate the loss of reality or rational reactions. Often it shows not being in touch with what’s realistically possible and what’s worth trying. There can be an attempt to do too much or too soon or before maturing enough to be capable of doing it. Still, trying to do things that are outside one’s natural sphere can be a good thing, as long as you don’t overreach and cause damage. Sometimes, first attempts at a new experience may prove less than elegant or skillful. Soon you’ll look back with amusement at these early attempts. Find enjoyment in the “Intoxication”, but come back to earth when the feelings vanish.
Keywords: False courage. Inexperience. Trying to do something beyond the bounds of experience or possibility. Getting “out of it” in order to escape something. The Quest Degree for Mars is Leo 22: A CARRIER PIGEON FULFILLING ITS MISSION
This Symbol implies a clear sense of purpose and direction, even a sense of divine guidance. The ‘Carrier Pigeon’ may have to go through hardships and obstacles in order to deliver the message it is carrying or to complete the mission. This can be about bridging communications between people or conveying something that someone needs to hear or know. Pigeons were trained to deliver very important messages and some won honors and medals. Be sure that the end is in sight and there is a prize to be won in bringing a message to those who need it. Whatever this Symbol is speaking about, someone has a “Mission” that needs to be fulfilled.
Keywords: Bringer of good tidings and news. Creating lines of communication. Completing tasks. Feeling like one is on a mission. Finding out what’s truly going on. Having a sense of destiny. People enjoy the outdoors and each other as they leave behind the stresses and strains of modern life in order to get more in touch with their bodies and their environment whilst having fun and relaxing. At times you may feel the need to get out into the open air or spend time with others or get in touch with your emotions. Joining with people of like mind in a natural setting, in a free and easy way, you can feel the release that can come from reminding yourself of the wonders of nature. Saturn is retrograde on Sagittarius 22: A CHINESE LAUNDRY
This Symbol pictures situations where people may not be taken seriously, are expected to perform in a stereotypical way or are shut away because of their culture, or language, or because of racial prejudice. In a “Chinese Laundry” people are often working very hard with little free time and expected to do the ‘dirty work’ for others for very little in return. Be careful not to shut yourself away as there can be the danger of closing your mind to other options, opportunities and possibilities. This can also picture situations where people are working closely together, speaking the same language, although here, too, there can still be alienation and loneliness.
Keywords: Restrictive expectations. Relations with others because of social duty. Performing tasks. Mediocrity, or the fear of it. Washing machines and dryers. Money and other laundering. It often shows getting out of, or into, anything they want. You can present an image that enhances your position in society. This Symbol talks about supervision, border protection and control. There can be a feeling of having to oversee a large ’empire’ where reliability and leadership are vital. This can be a tiring responsibility, but there can be an awareness of the protection of ‘all who went before’. However, political and social restraints from the past could be causing you to feel that you’ve somehow got to ‘wage war’. The “Fertile Garden” signifies that you have things that you need at your disposal. This Symbol has a strong clairvoyant sense to it, with the ability to pick up on subtle energies and life forms in the environment. Let us take things as we find them: let us not attempt to distort them into what they are not. We cannot make facts. All our wishing cannot change them. We must use them. John Henry Cardinal Newman
This Symbol shows the ability, or the need, to find balance, to find your center so that you might be more effective, stable and organized. As the “Butterfly” has a “Right Wing More Perfectly Formed”, you may be applying your rational logical mind out of balance to your intuitive and creative wisdom, or, vice versa. It is often harder to understand your intuitive messages, but reliance on logic can limit your possibilities. However, not applying logic can lead to big problems as well. There can be physical handicaps which may prevent one from truly doing what one wants, or strange imbalances on the spiritual level.
Keywords: Rising above life’s distortions. A need to bring some type of balance to situations. Injuries or problems with hands or arms. One side being more ‘Perfect’ than the other. The ‘Right’ being better than the left. Mutations. Handicaps. Challenges. Disabilities. Impediments.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Saturday, August 19th
Aries
Aries
Your tendency to play it safe in the first half of the day is astrological, dear Aries. In fact, it fills a current need. This is the time of the lunar month when you check in with your feelings and family or spend extra time concerned with domestic matters. Your search for more comfort, security, and safety prepares you for a decidedly more outgoing period ahead. In two days, a Solar Eclipse will occur in your creative and romantic sector, and you’ll receive a charge of energy for romance, children, creativity, and entertainment. You are in need of quality leisure time and channels for expressing yourself creatively, and you’ll be working on these things going forward. Today and tomorrow, take the time to reflect and finish up projects that may interfere with your New Moon/Solar Eclipse resolutions and goals and take the opportunity to get in touch with your heart.
Taurus
Taurus
There is an increasing focus in August on your personal life and home or family matters, dear Taurus, and the need for more down time as well. However, until the afternoon, you’re likely to crave some excitement or, at the very least, a busy pace. At times, you may feel a little too connected, however, as people may be up and down with their communications. With all that’s going on, it’s difficult getting in touch with your deeper emotions, but this will change, starting this afternoon. As well, Monday’s Solar Eclipse will bring a cosmic nudge to make improvements to your home life and your inner life. Today and tomorrow, you might think about putting projects to rest or simply to the side if possible so that you can embrace your New Moon/Solar Eclipse resolutions and goals. Reconnecting with your need for familiarity, comfort, and security is important now. All-new projects can wait.
Gemini
Gemini
The first half of today is best used for settling in or building something important to you, dear Gemini. There may be some concerns or ups and downs related to money or valuables, and possibly matters of respect in relationships, but nothing you can’t handle. You’re not inclined to linger on problem areas, that is, unless the tools for fixing them are right in front of you – such is the nature of the solar second house where the Moon is a guest now. From the afternoon forward, however, the Moon moves into your communications sector, shaking things up and stimulating your desire to reach out and make connections. In two days, a Solar Eclipse will occur in this same sector, and it’s a game-changer. The weeks and even months ahead are ripe for new beginnings on learning and connecting levels and cleaning your slate in these areas. The Moon is Balsamic today and tomorrow, however, and it’s appropriate for reflecting and considering new goals, but not for beginning something brand new. It is, however, great for bringing something to completion or ending a bad habit or situation.
Cancer
Cancer
In the first half of the day, it’s not easy to hide your feelings as the Moon transits your sign, dear Cancer. Even if you’re not verbally expressing them, they are written on your face! Feelings are larger than life now, but it’s good for you if you use this energy moderately. You’ll benefit from self-awareness especially since a Solar Eclipse occurring on Monday is set to redirect your interests and provide you with the opportunity to start fresh, particularly on financial and self-worth levels. You are one of the zodiac signs that’s a little more grounded than others during this period, even though the Moon’s involvement in any Solar Eclipse tends to heighten your sensitivity levels since the Moon rules your sign. Avoid brand-new endeavors today, as it’s a better few days for reflecting and observing. Tap into a craving for steadiness and security emerging from the afternoon forward and consider what you need to do to get more of it!
Leo
Leo
When the Moon visits your privacy sector and then your sign each lunar month, dear Leo, things get personal. You’re more sensitive to the emotional atmosphere around you, and you take things to heart more than usual. Today, the Moon divides its time between both sectors of your chart, and, with a Solar Eclipse set to occur on Monday in the sign of Leo, you’re in a particularly emotionally-charged time. This is a critical juncture for getting in touch with your intuition. Today, consider ways you can tie up loose ends so that you can begin a new power cycle with more confidence and self-knowledge. You have a greater need for moments of quiet and solitude so that you can regroup today, and you should grab any opportunities to do so. Remember that this is a magical time for personal reinvention. Today and tomorrow, do what you can to reflect and muse about what you want for yourself. Consider ways to let go of attitudes that have been holding you back from personal success.
Virgo
Virgo
In the first half of the day, dear Virgo, you tend to turn to friends, cherished dreams, or special projects for nurturance and inspiration with the Moon in your solar eleventh house. You prefer cooperative or solo activities to competitive ones. You’re doing more thinking, wishing, and planning than anything now, but this is for the best as the current Moon cycle is drawing to a close. Reflective activities are favored over new beginnings until after the Solar Eclipse on Monday (and then some). The Moon moves into your privacy and soul sector this afternoon, and this is the same sector where the eclipse will influence, so today and tomorrow are excellent for getting in touch with your feelings and dreams. If you’ve been neglecting your spiritual and emotional needs, you’ll receive a cosmic nudge to do so in the coming week.
Libra
Libra
In the first half of the day, the Moon, sitting at the top of your chart, stimulates heightened awareness of your reputation, responsibilities, and performance, dear Libra. Distractions interfere today, no doubt about it, but you’ll get a chance to tackle at least one thing on your to-do list this morning. In fact, it’s best that you do, since your mood depends on your sense of accomplishment today. From afternoon forward, the Moon in your solar eleventh house encourages you to pay particular attention to who you meet and ideas that come to you through people and networking. The New Moon/Solar Eclipse occurring on Monday will influence this same sector of friendships, networking, community involvement, new ideas, technology, and aspirations. Your state of mind can help pave the way for new beginnings in these areas, so do your best to get into a positive mindset. Today and tomorrow, think and process rather than push ahead with new endeavors.
Scorpio
Scorpio
In the first half of the day, you seek out (or long for) more freedom, open spaces, and fresh air, dear Scorpio. This is the case when the Moon transits your adventure and spirit sector. Routines are good for you, but so are moments when you break out of them temporarily to do something new and different. If you can’t seem to break free, then be sure to take creative breaks. Today and tomorrow are better for freestyling than for brand new launches with a Solar Eclipse set to occur on Monday at the top of your solar chart. The Moon gets into position from the afternoon forward, making it a fine time to prepare for the clean slate it will bring. Consider what you truly want to aspire to, or what projects you want to direct your energies into. Right now, finding ways to leave behind interfering attitudes and projects can be helpful as all-new endeavors are best saved for later when your direction is clearer.
Sagittarius
Sagittarius
The need or desire to share, create, learn, explore, and connect is certainly building in your life these days, dear Sagittarius, and this theme will get a big boost with Monday’s Solar Eclipse. Even so, the first half of today finds you in an observant, introspective, and retiring mood. This is helpful, in fact, since relaxing and winding down are important in the days before a New Moon, and particularly a New Moon Solar Eclipse. You might relish a little time to yourself, tucked away. The Moon’s move into your adventure sector this afternoon can help set the mood, but keep in mind that it’s better to close up projects and tie up loose ends than begin something brand new now. Consider which attitudes or situations may need to be left behind in order to move forward freer and lighter on an emotional level.
Capricorn
Capricorn
The Moon transits your partnership sector until the afternoon today, dear Capricorn, and this is the time of the lunar month when you’re more dependent on others, particularly a partner or good buddy. You seek out company, collaboration, and feedback, although the latter may not always be very welcome! Even so, you are learning a lot about yourself through your dealings and exchanges. You may feel strongly about achieving a more balanced, harmonious atmosphere around you right now. In two days, a New Moon/Solar Eclipse will occur, and it’s a time for turning over a new leaf. As it happens in the background of your solar chart, it may be a little less significant to you than other signs. The Moon moves into your sharing and intimacy sector this afternoon, where the eclipse will occur on Monday, and you can begin your reflections about how you want to improve your life. The weeks and even months ahead are excellent for getting rid of burdens or sharing their weight of them with someone special. Today and tomorrow, think, process, feel, and reflect.
Aquarius
Aquarius
In the first half of the day, you’re focused on bringing more order to your life, dear Aquarius. You see what’s in disarray more clearly, and should now focus on righting things one step at a time to avoid a feeling of being overwhelmed. Be reasonable with yourself, and you’ll accomplish much! You’re unlikely to tackle the big decisions right now, and that’s probably for the best. The Moon moves into your partnership sector this afternoon, where a Solar Eclipse will occur on Monday bringing a charge of energy for starting a new partnership or committing to a new way of enhancing a current relationship. Take in now, and take action after the eclipse and only when it feels right. Consider ways to improve, enhance, and enjoy existing relationships and make it a goal to get in touch with what you want from your partnerships. Today and tomorrow before the eclipse, we are symbolically in the dark, so hold off on new beginnings and concentrate on letting go of things you no longer need.
Pisces
Pisces
The first half of the day is good for enjoying big feelings, spending time with people you like, and entertainment, dear Pisces, but not as fabulous for productivity. That’s, in fact, quite fine since the eclipse on Monday is set to change all of this, emphasizing work, health, and the practical side of your world in the weeks (and possibly months) ahead. The Moon’s move into the same sector this afternoon gets you in the right mind frame. The solar eclipse in two days will bring a redirection of sorts, and until then, it’s appropriate to consider what you’re looking for in the work and health department so that your new beginnings will be all the more meaningful. Some of you could be doing a top-to-bottom reorganization of your workspace or home. Whatever gets you more organized and feeling in charge of your daily life is favored now. Take it easy, though, as the Balsamic Moon encourages letting go and reflecting rather than pushing ahead of yourself.
If You Were Born Today, August 19
You are a big dreamer, and while you can worry and fret quite a bit in your youth, as you gain experience and connect with your inner code and spirituality, you become wise and more content. You are not always easy for others to understand! However, you do understand others instinctively. Your intuition is nothing short of outstanding. Even so, your mind is highly analytical. You are sensitive and warm, and a bit of a perfectionist. You dream big dreams, and sometimes are quite discontented with everyday realities. You can stretch the truth sometimes as a result. A natural leader, you tend to enjoy being the first to do new things. You have personal charisma, and whatever you do, your individuality shines through. You tend to attract hard-working, ambitious, and loyal partners into your life.
Famous people born today: Coco Chanel, Matthew Perry, Bill Clinton, John Stamos, Gene Roddenberry, Tammin Sursok, Jonathan Frakes.
ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)
You’ve gone through a challenging time in relationships and you’ve had to do without many of the things which make your life a nicer place to be. Close ones may seem as if they don’t appreciate you but today you discover they do.
TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)
Resist the temptation to throw good money after bad, to save face from what hasn’t gone in your favour. You’ll get far more respect if you put your hands up to what wasn’t working. Cancelled meetings are clues as to which path is NOT for you.
GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)
It seems that a certain person’s presence is grating on you more and more by the day. You begin to understand what needs to change for you to feel as if you are in the driving seat again.
CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)
You seem so much more confident than you did this time last month. You’ve realised that the things you were worried about are not actually a threat to you, but are in fact part of a learning curve which can’t hurt you.
LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)
Don’t let pride stand in the way of doing what’s right for your career. It seems that learning and education are favoured and if you have to take a reverse motion to find a better path to take, then so be it.
VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)
Recent events have left you slightly shocked and bewildered. You are not sure who you can or should trust. Rest and do something which you know relaxes you this evening. It will help you find clarity of thought and action.
LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)
You thought you had to stick to a plan, but from today you find out that you have the right and free will to make your own way forward in the days ahead. A confrontation today requires you to keep your cool and remember your manners.
SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)
All forms of communications, texts, e mails and letters make your life a more interesting place to be. You no longer fight to get what want, but exciting offers will be landing in your lap.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)
Try not to repeat news which is not yours to share. You would be far better to let fate be the judge of how others can and should live their lives. Telling tales will only come back on you.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)
Paying attention to detail today will give you the edge. Don’t be afraid to give up some of your own time to get the end result you desire. Conversations had in passing can fill in many missing blanks.
AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)
I see how much pressure is on you to do what others deem is the right thing, but you have rights too Aquarius. Try not to judge a friend’s new partner too soon. You have far more in common than you may first imagine.
PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)
You are still dealing with some pretty painful emotions, but all that you’re experiencing is only serving to make you a more ambitious and learned character. Talking to fellow Pisces helps you reach some very valid conclusions.
Tarot Card of the Day
Three of Wands
August 19th, 2017
This suit, most often called “Wands” and sometimes called “Rods” or “Staves,” represents initiative, ambition, drive and desire. This is the suit of enterprise and risk-taking.
A Three in this suit symbolizes an inner balance that allows you to feel more optimistic about new endeavors you are committed to, or want to commit to. In the illustrated Tarots, the human character is standing on his balcony, watching ships leave the harbor, loaded with his goods for far-off ports, dreaming of the fortune he will reap if all goes well. Summon the optimism within you.
This energy must be patient and trusting, because he or she will have to wait some time to find out how the ships have fared. Meanwhile, a lot of resources are tied up until they return with the bounty. Only those truly confident in their ideas and abilities would undertake such a risk. This card represents the energy a person needs to take on great adventures and accomplish noble (and remunerative) deeds.
A detail that sometimes appears in the more esoteric Tarots is a winged wand with two snakes twining around it, called the Caduceus, which is Mercury’s wand. This is an ancient symbol of the healer or shaman, one who can travel between the worlds to rescue souls from death or possession. Perhaps the feeling of empowerment this card represents points to the internal mechanisms of self-healing. Perhaps it refers to the courage it takes to be an entrepreneur or an inventor, which is in itself a magical process — bringing not only opportunity for success, but also an awakening to higher potentials.
Someone could make you happy today if you only let them. And you deserve to be joyful. You will know who that person is if you quit fighting the natural flow of energy. The Sun energizes existing relationships today. It is the warm light of two hearts demonstrating the tenderness in themselves, and that elicits similar types of responses. This is a lovely and loving card that attracts benefits. Bask in them.

Your Karmic Number for August 19th
This 9 indicates that you are being called to teach but you have a disdain for the classroom. There are other ways of teaching that do not include standing before others who are judging you or expressing boredom. Start with what you love to do and work through ways of using your interests as tools to educate. Your enthusiasm is what will make teaching seem less like a chore. People are attracted to those who are enjoying their lives; it will be the very thing that helps them decide to engage in what you have to say. No one will ever realize that what you share is a teaching moment.

Going for Gold: New Moon and Total Solar Eclipse in Leo the Lion
So this is the big one – the much anticipated ‘Great American Eclipse’ of 2017. However much we might sneer at people in the distant past who were deeply unsettled by an eclipse, there’s still something awesome about seeing the bright Sun disappear behind a black disc. You can see the stars, and all the birds stop singing.
Deborah Byrd created the EarthSky radio series in 1991 and founded EarthSky.org in 1994. Today, she serves as Editor-in-Chief of this website. She has won a galaxy of awards from the broadcasting and science communities, including having an asteroid named 3505 Byrd in her honor. A science communicator and educator since 1976, Byrd believes in science as a force for good in the world and a vital tool for the 21st century. “Being an EarthSky editor is like hosting a big global party for cool nature-lovers,” she says.
Man said, “Goddess, when I was in the garden, you walked with me every day. Now I do not see you anymore. I am lonesome here, and it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me.”
And the Goddess said, “No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever, who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be at times, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself.”
And the Goddess created a new animal to be a companion for Man. And it was a good animal. And the Goddess was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be with Man, and he wagged his tail a lot.
And Man said, “Goddess, I have already named all the animals on your Earth. I cannot think of a name for this new animal.”
And the Goddess said, “No problem! Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a partial reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG.”
And DOG lived with Man, was a companion to him, and loved him. And DOG was beside Man, all the day long. And Man was comforted. And the Goddess was pleased. And DOG was content and wagged his tail.
After a while, it came to pass that Man’s spirit guide came to the Goddess and said, “Mother, Man has become filled with pride. He struts and preens like a peacock, and he believes he is worthy of adoration. DOG has indeed taught him that he is loved, but perhaps too well.”
And the Goddess said, “No problem! I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever, who will see him as he is. The companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know that he is not always worthy of adoration.”
And the Goddess created CAT to be a companion to Man.
And CAT would not obey Man. And CAT would love Man when CAT chose to love Man, and not when Man chose CAT to share affection.
And when Man gazed into CAT’s eyes, he was reminded that he was not the supreme being. And Man learned humility.
And the Goddess was pleased. And Man was greatly improved. And DOG was happy, and wagged his tail.

When I stand up for myself and my beliefs, they call me a “Witch”.
When I stand up for those I love, they call me a Witch.
When I speak my mind, think my own thoughts, or do things my own way, they call me a Witch.
Being a witch entails raising my children to be strong people
Who have a solid sense of personal and social responsibility
Who are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in
Who love and respect themselves for the beautiful beings they are.
Being a witch means that I am free to be the wonderful creature I am,
With all my own intricacies, contradictions, quirks and beauty.
Being a witch means I won’t compromise what’s in my heart.
It means I live my life MY way. It means I won’t allow anyone to step on me.
When I refuse to tolerate injustice and speak up against it, I am defined as a witch.
The same thing happens when I take time for myself instead of being everyone else’s maid or when I act a little selfish.
I am proud to be a witch! It means I have the courage and strength to allow myself to be who I truly am and won’t become anyone else’s idea of what they think I “should” be.
I am outspoken, opinionated and determined.
By Goddess, I want what I want and there is nothing wrong with that!
So, try to stomp on me, try to douse my inner flame, try to squash every ounce of beauty I hold within me. You won’t succeed.
And if that makes me a witch, so be it. I embrace the title and am proud to bear it. I love this, I can call myself a witch now and not feel bad about it!
SO MOTE IT BE!

Oh Yes, More Info About the Upcoming Eclipse: 9 Facts About the US Total Solar Eclipse of August 21, 2017
The total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017 will be visible from a narrow path spanning the US from the West Coast to the East Coast. Here are all the facts you need to know about this once-in-a-lifetime event.
1. 1st Total Solar Eclipse in 38 Years…
…for those in contiguous United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii). The last time anyone in mainland US saw a total eclipse of the Sun was on February 26, 1979. If you live in the US and miss this event, you’ll have to wait 7 more years, until April 8, 2024, to see a total solar eclipse from a location in the contiguous United States.
2. Most North Americans Will Be Able To See Totality…
…if they are willing to drive that is. The total eclipse will only be visible along the Moon’s central shadow, which at its widest will be about 115 kilometers (71.5 miles), according to some sources. Its path will span from the country’s West Coast to the East Coast. The rest of North America, as well as Central America and northern parts of South America, will experience a partial solar eclipse. NASA has estimated that a majority of the American population lives less than a 2-day drive away from the path of totality.
3. A Once-In-A-Lifetime Event
While total solar eclipses are not rare—they occur twice every 3 years on average and can be seen from some part of the Earth—a total eclipse of the Sun that can be seen from the American West Coast to the American East Coast occurs less frequently. In fact, the last time a total solar eclipse was visible from coast to coast was almost 100 years ago, on June 8, 1918!
What makes this eclipse extra special is that it is the first time since the total solar eclipse of January 11, 1880 that a total solar eclipse will occur exclusively over the continental United States—no other country will see totality, though many countries will see a partial eclipse of the Sun.
Because of these reasons, the eclipse is also being called the Great American Eclipse.
4. Parts of 14 American States Will Go Dark…
…for the 2 minutes of totality. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse in Newport, Oregon will be the first location on continental US soil to see totality. The partial phase of the eclipse will begin here at 9:04 am local time. Lincoln City, Oregon will also be one of the first locations in the country to experience totality.
Oregonians will also be the first to see totality as the Moon’s shadow moves east at an average speed of about 3600 km/h (2237 mph). After Oregon, the eclipse will move through Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina. Montana and Iowa are the only states where the path of totality will pass through unpopulated areas. People in Charleston, South Carolina will be some of the last people in the US to see totality.
Nashville, Tennessee is one of the few large cities in the United States to fall completely within the eclipse’s path of totality. Interestingly, only some parts of Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri will be able to see a total solar eclipse.
5. Totality Will Be Spectacular
If you are lucky enough to be in the path of totality, you are in for an astronomical treat, weather permitting, of course. When the eclipse begins, at 1st contact, it will appear as if the Moon is taking a bite out of the Sun. As the eclipse progresses, the sky will get darker, the temperature will drop, and if you pay attention, animals and birds will become quieter.
At 2nd contact, which is when totality begins, Baily’s Beads become visible. As the Moon completely covers the Sun’s surface, the diamond ring can be seen. You might also see pink spots called prominences near the diamond. These spots are caused by gases on the Sun’s surface.
Totality is the only time when one can see the corona, the Sun’s atmosphere. At 3rd contact, Baily’s Beads will once again become visible and a second diamond ring may appear.
6. Stars During the Daytime
As the sky turns dark, planets and stars hidden in the sky by the Sun’s bright light will reappear. Look for Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus during totality.
7. You Will Need Eye Protection
Do not look directly at the Sun, before, during or after the eclipse without any protective eyewear.
Looking at the Sun with your naked eyes is highly dangerous and can even cause blindness. The safest way to see a solar eclipse is to wear protective eclipse glasses or use a pinhole projector you can easily make yourself.
8. Part of Saros Series 145
Solar eclipses occur in cycles. The Saros cycle, one of the most studied eclipse cycles, occurs every 18 years. Two solar eclipses separated by a Saros cycle have similar features—they occur at the same lunar node, with the Moon roughly at the same distance from the Earth. The eclipses also take place at about the same time of the year and around the same time of day. Eclipses that are separated by a Saros cycle are part of a Saros series.
The August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse belongs to Saros series 145. It is the 22nd eclipse in a series of 77 eclipses. The series began with a partial solar eclipse visible from the Northern Hemisphere on January 4, 1639 and will end with a partial solar eclipse visible from the Southern Hemisphere on April 17, 3009.
The next eclipse in the series—a total solar eclipse—will take place on September 2, 2035.
9. Two Weeks Before: Partial Lunar Eclipse
A solar eclipse always takes place about two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse.
Two weeks before the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse, on August 7/ 8, 2017, a partial lunar eclipse will be visible from parts of South and East Asia, Europe, Africa, and Australia.
Comet PANSTARRS, the Perseid meteor shower, and other beautiful things to look for in the sky this week.
By Richard Talcott
Thursday, August 17
Jupiter appears low in the west-southwest an hour after sunset this week. The brilliant planet shines at magnitude –1.8 and dominates the evening sky. It appears against the backdrop of Virgo, some 6° to the right of the Maiden’s brightest star, 1st-magnitude Spica. When viewed through a telescope, Jupiter’s disk spans 33″ and shows a wealth of atmospheric detail.
Friday, August 18
Look overhead around 10 p.m. anytime this week and your eyes will fall on the brilliant star Vega in the constellation Lyra the Harp. At magnitude 0.0, Vega is the brightest member of the prominent Summer Triangle asterism. The Triangle’s second-brightest star, magnitude 0.8 Altair in Aquila the Eagle, lies some 35° southeast of Vega. The asterism’s dimmest member, magnitude 1.3 Deneb in Cygnus the Swan, stands about 25° east-northeast of Vega.
The Moon reaches perigee, the closest point in its orbit around Earth, at 9:18 a.m. EDT. It then lies 227,497 miles (366,121 kilometers) from Earth’s center.
The Moon is in Gemini until 12:12 PM, after which the Moon is in Cancer.
The Moon is void of course from 9:37 AM to 12:12 PM.
The Moon is waning and in its Last Quarter phase.
The Last Quarter Moon occurred on the 14th, and the New Moon (Solar Eclipse) will occur on August 21st.
Mercury is retrograde (Mercury is retrograde from August 12-September 5).
Moon in Gemini
The Moon is traveling through witty Gemini today. Call, text, send email, write letters. Visit someone you’ve missed. Watch a movie and talk about it at a coffee shop. Get out and about. Don’t sleep in.
Our instincts are to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, short trips.
Today is Thursday, August 17th
Thursday is the day of the planet Jupiter, dedicated to Thunor(Thor), God of thunder and agricultural work. His parallels in various European traditions are Zeus, Taranis, Perun, Perkunas and St. Olaf. The faith of the Northern Tradition holds Thursday sacred, just as Islam reveres Friday, Judaism the Sabbath(calculated from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday), and Christianity, Sunday. This is why almost all adages about Thursday are positve, such as “Thursday’s child has far to go,” “Sneeze on Thursday, something better,” or “Cut nails on Thursday for wealth.” Thursday rules controlled optimism, energetic growth, physical well-being and material success.

On Thursday, August 17th, We Honor The God Thor
Thor – Norse Thunder God
Thor is one of the most popular and powerful gods of the major mythologies. He is also part of modern daily life, since the fifth day of the week, Thursday (Thor’s day), is named for him.
Odin is usually given as the father of Thor, a thunder god in Norse mythology. Less controversially, Thor’s mother was a female giant named Jord, according to Motz (see references below).
Thor mated with a giant named Jarnsaxa with whom he had two sons, named Magni and Modi, but his wife is Sif (whose luscious golden hair the trickster god Loki cuts).
Thor’s Herculean Appetite
Thor’s appetites are gigantic. He once drank from a horn that was emptying the water from the ocean. He is described as huge, red-bearded, with burning eyes who could defeat giant or troll in a test of strength. Yet, he was so much smaller than a giant that once he slept in a giant’s glove. Epithets for Thor indicate his giant-defeating prowess. He is similar to the Greek hero Heracles (Hercules) in his feats of strength and giant-killing.
Thor had a famous weapon, his hammer, named Mjolnir, and a belt of strength, named Megingjardir. He had a goat-driven chariot that created the noise of the thunder, according to Davidson, when rolling across the sky. The lightning bolts were caused by the hurling of Mjolnir. Thunderbolts are called Thorsviggar, according to Montelius.
Thor’s home was called Bilskinir, located in Thrudheim or Thrudvangar.
Thor was worshiped especially in Uppsala and Thrandheim.

The Magickal Day of Thursday
Thursday is a day of royal blues and greens, associated with the planet Jupiter and metals like tin. When it comes to deities, look at leader type gods like Thor, Zeus, and Jupiter. Gemstone correspondences for Thursday include turquoise, amethyst and lapis lazuli, and plant associations can be found in honeysuckle, cinquefoil, and even oak trees.
This is a day for honor, fealty and family loyalty, as well as harvesting, success, and prosperity.
Take advantage of Thursday’s different aspects and do spellwork that brings abundance to you, declares your allegiance, and embraces prosperity.
⦁ Middle English – thursday or thuresday
⦁ Old Norse– thorsdagr – Thor’s day
⦁ Old English– thunresdæg – Thunder’s day
⦁ Latin – dies Jovis – “Day of Jupiter”
⦁ Ancient Greek – hemera Dios – “day of Zeus”
The name is derived from Old English and Middle English Thuresday (with loss of -n-, first in northern dialects, from influence of Old Norse Þorsdagr) meaning “Thor’s Day”. Thunor, Donar (German, Donnerstag) and Thor are derived from the name of the Germanic god of thunder, Thunraz, equivalent to Jupiter in the interpretation romance.
In most Romance languages, the day is named after the Roman god Jupiter, who was the god of sky and thunder. In Latin, the day was known as Iovis Dies, “Jupiter’s Day”. In Latin, the genitive or possessive case of Jupiter was Iovis/Jovis and thus in most Romance languages it became the word for Thursday: Italian giovedì, Spanish jueves, French jeudi, Sardinian jòvia, Catalan dijous, and Romanian joi.
This is also reflected in the p-Celtic Welsh dydd Iau.
The astrological and astronomical sign of the planet Jupiter is sometimes used to represent Thursday.
Since the Roman god Jupiter was identified with Thunor (Norse Thor in northern Europe), most Germanic languages name the day after this god: Torsdag in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, Hósdagur/Tórsdagur in Faroese, Donnerstag in German or Donderdag in Dutch. Finnish and Northern Sami, both non-Germanic (Uralic) languages, uses the borrowing “Torstai” and “Duorastat”. In the extinct Polabian Slavic language, it was perundan, Perun being the Slavic equivalent of Thor.
There are a number of modern names imitating the naming of Thursday after an equivalent of “Jupiter” in local tradition. In most of the languages of India, the word for Thursday is Guruvar- var meaning day and guru being the style for Bṛhaspati, guru to the gods and regent of the planet Jupiter. In Thai, the word is Wan Pharuehatsabodi—referring to the Hindu deity Bṛhaspati, also associated with Jupiter. En was an old Illyrian deity and in his honor in the Albanian language Thursday is called “Enjte”. In the Nahuatl language, Thursday is Tezcatlipotōnal meaning “day of Tezcatlipoca”.
Thursday’s Witchery
Today is the day for prosperity work of all kinds. It can also be used for healing work, whether that is a physical healing of an illness or an emotional healing. Also remember that you have to follow up your healing work and prosperity magick and physical action.
I can’t tell you the number of times I have met new witches who complain to me that their prosperity spell or “I need a better job” spell did not work as they expected. They’ll ramble on and on about how much time and money they spent working their magick….but, alas, they had no glorious manifestation of wealth or fabulous job that suddenly dropped out of the sky and landed in their laps.
Then, when I gently ask them, “Did you enchant your resume or application when you filled it out? Did you do a little confidence-boosting spellwork when you went to apply for the job or went to the interview?” typically they give me a blank, confused stare.
Nine times out of ten, their response is, “You mean I have to go out and actually look for the job too?” Um, yes, my dear, you certainly do. Magick follows the path of least resistance, which means it’s going to manifest along the simplest, quickest route. Get out there and hit the pavement. See what you can find. Times are tough and competition for good jobs is fierce, so you need whatever edge you can get. For folks like us, we’re going to get the edge by using our magick and our spellcraft.
Thursdays have such a rich source of magick for us to draw upon that, honestly, the sky is the limit. This is the day associated with the gods of the sky and heavens, after all. Get to know these deities and add their wisdom and magick into your days

The Witches Correspondences for Thursday, August 17th
Ruled by the planet Jupiter and dedicated to Thor, god of thunder and agricultural work. His parallels in various European Traditions include Zeus, Taranis, Perun, and Perkunas.
Magical aspects: controlled optimism, energetic growth, physical well-being, material success, expansion, money/wealth, prosperity, leadership, and generosity.
Thursday is the day of Jupiter, the largest of the planets and said to be the most powerful. Spellcasters would be wise to use this day for attempting wealth, success and prosperity spells.
Thursday is also associated (in Greek mythology) to Thor – Thor’s day – and some even say that Jupiter and Thor are one in the same. Both are strong and powerful, yet wise and just. Try a small prayer to Jupiter before commencing any ritual on Thursday as a sign of respect.
This is the proper day of the week to perform spells and rituals involving luck, happiness, health, legal matters, male fertility, treasure, wealth, honour, riches, clothing, money, desires, business, group pursuits, joy, laughter, and expansion
Custom Made Magick for Thursday
Well, let’s see … abundance, prosperity, and good health has been our focus for this day. Now how about a little more information and ideas for working practical magick with one of our fascinating featured deities of the day?
Juno was the Queen of Heaven. As the matriarch of the gods, she guarded over women in every aspect of their lives. Juno was thought to have renewed her virginity every year. Similar to other goddess stories, Juno was a triple goddess-a virgin who belonged to no one; a mother and woman in the prime of her life, sexual and mature; and also a crone, powerful, wise, and sometimes vengeful (as she made her husband’s many mistresses’ lives either fairly unhappy or short).
There are references to an early all-female triad of goddesses known as the Capitoline Triad. This triad consisted of Juventas, Juno, and Minerva. To the Greeks, they would have been known as Hebe, Hera, and Hecate. Ultimately the triad became Juno, Minerva, and the male Jupiter. Jupiter, another of Thursday’s gods, was Juno’s consort.
As mentioned earlier, Juno, in her aspect as Juno Moneta, was the patron and protector of the Roman mint. The coins produced at her temples were blessed by Juno and imbued with her powers of abundance and prosperity. In another of her aspects as Juno Augusta, Juno was the goddess of an abundant harvest.
In addition, another of Juno’s magickal correspondences is the semiprecious stone malachite. Malachite is a beautiful green-banded stone that was also called the “peacock stone” in Italy. The peacock was a sacred animal of Juno’s, and the magickal energies of malachite encourage health and prosperity.

The Perfect Corresponding Spell for Thursday – Earthy Prosperity Tarot Spell
Earthy Prosperity Tarot Spell
If possible, work this prosperity spell outdoors. You will be calling on the element of earth and all of its fertile and abundant energies. If weather prohibits you from being outside, then set this up so your work area faces north, because the northern direction is associated with the element of earth.
• A green votive candle
• A votive-cup candle holder
• 1/2 cup garden soil (you can use potting soil)
• A saucer or small plate to hold the soil
• The following tarot cards: Ace of Pentacles, Nine of Pentacles, and Ten of Pentacles (please note: the suits of Coins and Pentacles are the same thing)
• A lighter or matches
• A safe, flat surface on which to set up the spell
Place the green votive candle inside the cup. Snuggle the votive cup securely down into the soil. Arrange the cards next to the dish that holds the soil and candle. Take a few moments to center yourself. When you feel ready, light the candle, and speak the following spell three times:
Element of earth I call, ground and strengthen me tonight May the gods now bless this green spell candle that burns so bright The suit of Pentacles and Coins calls for prosperity They will help to bring health and abundance quickly to me Now together may all of these elements combine And create opportunity for wealth at this time.
Close the spell by saying:
For the good of all, bringing harm to none By the element of earth, this spell is done!
Allow the candle to burn until it goes out on its own. If necessary, move the candle to a safe location so it can finish burning, such as a shower stall, inside an unlit fireplace, or in the emply kitchen sink. Never leave a burning candle unattended, especially outdoors.

What Are The Best Known Pagan Paths?
Not all Pagans are Wiccans, and not all Pagan paths are the same. From Asatru to Druidry to Celtic Reconstructionism, there are plenty of Pagan groups out there to choose from. Read on and learn about the differences and the similarities. Keep in mind that this list is not meant to be all-encompassing, and we don’t claim that it covers every single Pagan path that’s out there. Plenty more exist, and if you do a bit of digging you’ll find them – but these are some of the best known belief systems in the modern Pagan community.
Asatru
The Asatru tradition is a reconstructionist path that focuses on pre-Christian Norse spirituality. The movement began in the 1970s as part of a revival of Germanic paganism, and numerous Asatru groups exist in the United States and other countries. Many Asatruar prefer the word “heathen” to “neopagan,” and rightfully so. As a reconstructionist path, many Asatruar say their religion is very similar in its modern form to the religion that existed hundreds of years ago before the Christianization of the Norse cultures.
Druidry/Druidism
When most people hear the word Druid, they think of old men with long beards, wearing robes and frolicking around Stonehenge. However, the modern Druid movement is a bit different from that. Although there has been a significant revival in interest in things Celtic within the Pagan community, it’s important to remember that Druidism is not Wicca.
Egyptian Paganism/Kemetic Reconstructionism
There are some traditions of modern Paganism that follow the structure of the ancient Egyptian religion. Typically these traditions, sometimes referred to as Kemetic Paganism or Kemetic reconstruction, follow basic principles of Egyptian spirituality such as honoring the Neteru, or deities, and finding a balance between man’s needs and the natural world. For most Kemetic groups, information is gained by studying scholarly sources of information on ancient Egypt.
Hellenic Polytheism
Rooted in the traditions and philosophies of the ancient Greeks, one neopagan path that has begun a resurgence is Hellenic Polytheism. Following the Greek pantheon, and often adopting the religious practices of their ancestors, Hellenes are part of the reconstructive neopagan movement.
Kitchen Witchery
The phrase “kitchen witchery” is becoming more and more popular among Pagans and Wiccans. Find out what exactly kitchen witchery, or kitchen witchcraft, means and learn how you can incorporate kitchen witch practices into your daily life.
Pagan Reconstructionist Groups
Most people in the Pagan and Wiccan community have heard the term “recon” or “reconstructionism.” A reconstructionist, or recon, tradition is one based upon actual historical writings and attempts to literally reconstruct the practice of a specific ancient group. Let’s look at some different recon groups out there in the community.
Religio Romana
Religio Romana is a modern Pagan reconstructionist religion based upon the ancient faith of pre-Christian Rome. It’s definitely not a Wiccan path, and because of the structure within the spirituality, it’s not even something where you can swap out gods of other pantheons and insert the Roman deities. It is, in fact, unique among Pagan paths. Learn about this unique spiritual path than honors the old gods in they ways they were honored thousands of years ago.
Stregheria
Stregheria is a branch of modern Paganism that celebrates early Italian witchcraft. Its adherents say that their tradition has pre-Christian roots, and refer to it as La Vecchia Religione, the Old Religion. There are a number of different traditions of Stregheria, each with its own history and set of guidelines. Much of it is based upon the writings of Charles Leland, who published Aradia: Gospel of the Witches. Although there’s some question about the validity of Leland’s scholarship, the work purports to be a scripture of an ancient pre-Christian witch cult.

Odin’s Ordeal Begins
According to legend, Odin hung on the World Tree Yggdrasil for nine days, during which time he discovered the runes. In modern Asatru, this discovery is celebrated with a nine-day festival starting on August 17. To those who follow the Norse traditions, Odin is the chief deity and appears in many aspects, among them leader of the wild hunt, God of magick, chooser of the slain in battle, and the dispenser of gifts. As king of Aesir, he was the God of fertility and the last sheaf of wheat was left in offering to his horse. His magickal number was 9 (the days he endured initiation on the World Tree), his color is blue (as is his cloak), and the raven of the Valkyries who attend him are sacred.

Avalon has always held a mystical, magical, spiritual place in my heart and I believe in the hearts of many others. A great deal has been written over the years and the overriding consensus is that it was a feminine based society. When you read about Avalon, most often it is associated with King Arthur and Camelot. This was but a portion of Avalon’s experience. So much of what is written is based on lore and old manuscripts of ancient England. There is much that people will just discount as fantasy. But through my channeling, I’ve received information that this magical place is returning to Earth. It is bringing the Divine Feminine back with a modern alignment to an ancient tradition.
In the summer of 2016 I was doing a private channel for a friend of mine, Leanne Temple. As we looked at various past lifetimes, Avalon suddenly became very important to her. We both realized she was the High Priestess of Avalon when it disappeared. I’ve known Leanne for a long time, so that didn’t surprise me, but what did was that a council of twelve working with star beings and dragons actually removed Avalon from the earth plane! I could see it happening. Now, this was not the entire land, but a significant portion that contained the records of time.
Leanne and I both felt that the reason it needed to be removed was because people were trying to find these deeply held secrets so as to destroy them which in turn would allow the others to control these people – or so they thought! Our sense is that this was during Atlantis as the energies were very masculine and controlling.
Channeled message from Avalon (click here for the video):
Greetings my Brothers and Sisters!
I am so very pleased to speak with you at this time about the return of Avalon. There are a group of us who have been working with people all around your earth in other dimensions to assist with the movement.
I wish to speak of what I have communicated to this individual speaking. All that she has written above is correct, but it is also but a drop in the bucket!! I wish to speak to you of what Avalon IS to me and to this group.
Avalon has been one of the oldest cultures upon the earth. We have been a part of the earth and indeed the Druids arose from our truth. We are originally from off the earth. We originate in a star system far from your own. We chose to live upon earth because of the beauty and the water; plus the energies of peace.
Warfare exists in all parts of the universe and this Earth, but it does not make it avibration we wish to live within. That being said, we have always done whatever was needed to keep our peace in any of the stations that we inhabited around the universe.
As I speak of Avalon it is with great respect and love. In some cases we created them, in other cases they were here already; but the people of Avalon are very much aligned with the Fae, the Dragons, the Elementals and all animals of your environment. We worked the earth for our food. We revered all peoples and all beliefs because no one was better or worse than another.
During our times upon the earth, we had countless experiences of becoming one with the earth. We worked with the elements to assist with our crops. We shifted into an animal if it was needed to create something. We worked with metals transforming them to assist us in life.
When the time came that we could no longer be disguised and we could no longer live our lives we had many discussions. One was that we could all ascend off the earth into a new location; in fact, many did just that. Another was that people could go inside of the earth because there were portals and pathways to do so. What was finally decided was that we would remove the heart of Avalon and keep it safe in another dimension so that it could return when the time was right. Now is that time!
Imagine if you will the discussions that took place! Oh, I smile even now because they were fierce and immense. But we of Avalon are very strong, we know our strengths, we know that of which we are capable!
We did not have your linear time frame, so to try and acclimate we would say this was when Atlantis was well established and pushing the boarders. There were many of what you call the ET’s who were working with them and we knew these species of what they are capable; this too is behind our decisions.
It truly did not take long, the actual removal. There were many priestesses including the high priestess who worked with the land creating a separation. They worked deep into the ground with the assistance of the Fae and Elementals creating deep ravines. We spoke with every person. We spoke with the animals and all species who occupied our space. It was well known by all what was to come. Some attempted to share this information with those who wanted to capture us; but they never found our location.
As Avalon was lifted, there were laser type beams that were directed at the earth from ships in the sky. We were assisted by those you speak of as the Great White Brotherhood, the Arcturians and of course our home planet. These lasers very precisely created the complete separation in the earth. From there using many, many dragons, the levitating energies of the Druids, the energy of all our brothers and sisters in the ships; we lifted off from the earth.
We have been encapsulated in a dimension which has protected us from all. We have watched the actions of the earth and we have participated through our people’s including the times of Camelot. By then we were gone and only created a space where we could live and breathe which is why it was always in a mist. We did this because we thought that was the time of a shift that would create the balance and peace on earth which would allow us to return, but it was not the right time.
We have deemed that now is the time to return to Earth. We have had a hologram of Avalon located in the space of England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Greenland and Iceland. We are actually much larger than that, but that is our focus. We will place our island in the north Atlantic between Iceland, Greenland and Ireland.
We believe that the grounding of the energy back into the earth will shift the energies into a greater balance. We intend that this return with the total eclipse will cut through the hatred, the anger, the fear, the rage, the warfare that is so prevalent. To those of you upon the earth; this may seem to be dominant. To us, we SEE that there are sooooo many, many, many of we the Avalonians present upon the earth. We are all around with our energy of peace, love, acceptance and balance.
For this day of the eclipse, Monday, August 21, 2017, as you date your time upon the earth we will be seated again. We will come in, in an invisible mode. We bring our dragons to assist with the seating of the island. Right now there is water, but the Island will appear. You, my beloved family, can find it anytime you seek to blend with us. We will be primarily in the 7th dimension but over time will create alignments to the 5th. We will not go below that level; in fact, it will only be the high 5th dimension.
We value the assistance of all. If you will in your meditation, go into your heart and find through the central sun your alignment to us. For many it is easily found since you are here already!! Please see us as returning, as balancing, as bringing forth the love, the joy, the magic, the truth of all that we are; for we are Avalon!
I thank you for joining with this exciting occasion realizing that all are of the earth and live as the earth; from here the balanced energy will emerge.
I thank you for spending this time with me~~~
Merlin/ Morgan/ Brigid We are One
Whew!! The emotion I felt during that channel was huge! As it separated, I felt tears and this is something I’ve tapped into half a dozen times already. As it returns, I felt very protective. But I realized as I was observing the earth and the return that this has been planned for a long time and there has been a hologram where this is going so I felt much more confident and secure.
Now is the time to bring this to consciousness. I’m sure many people have been a part of this on an unconscious level.
Therefore on this day Monday, August 21, 2017 no matter where you live in the world I invite you to tap into the energies the eclipse. Allow it to truly clear out your old energy and patterns. Then as we anchor Avalon, we also anchor balance, love, magical potentials and more.
I also have a YouTube video that is talks more about the eclipse that you can also watch if you are interested.
Your Daily Horoscopes for Thursday, August 17th
Aries
Aries
Certainly, with Mercury still retrograde, there can be more than the usual misunderstandings these days, dear Aries, but it’s a good cycle in which to revisit old conversations from a different perspective. The Moon moves through your communications sector until midday, stimulating your desire to do some of this rehashing, as long as it’s on the light side, as you are far too busy right now to focus too intently on any one topic! Your desires to communicate, connect, and collect information are notable now. You enjoy a pleasing level of busy-ness. With the Moon in your home and family sector in the second half of the day, you’ll do well for yourself if you seek out activities that help build your confidence from the inside out and treat yourself to comforting endeavors. It’s a good time to back away from problems related to work or the outside world (of which there have been more than the usual recently) so that you can recoup some energy.
Taurus
Taurus
With the Moon in your resources sector for the first half of the day, your intuition is sound when it comes to practical affairs, dear Taurus. Mercury’s retrograde, active until September 5th, does sometimes pull your attention away from particular facts and details, but this opens your mind to things you overlooked in the past and allows you to reconsider how you’ve been handling money. As well, you can gain new ideas and instincts with money and business as you reassess things. Even if they need refinement later, coming up with these ideas gets you started. While you may stick with familiar tasks and activities this morning, the second half of the day has a way of stimulating your curiosity. In fact, the routine may feel too staid and boring, so it’s time to liven things up a little by branching out and connecting with people and information.
Gemini
Gemini
The first half of the day is favorable for connecting, sharing ideas, and going your own way, dear Gemini, with the Moon in your sign. It’s true that Mercury’s retrograde can lead to more misunderstandings or delays than usual these days, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have some great conversations. In fact, it’s an interesting time for revisiting old discussions and ideas. This is an important time of the lunar month for getting in touch with your emotional needs (and wants), even if they are often exaggerated under this influence. It’s a good time for healthy self-focus, but also quite enjoyable for reaching out. The Moon moves out of your sign midday, reminding you of the beautiful things already present in your life. Since there have been more than the usual complications in your life recently, you’ll welcome this Moon position’s moderate and reasonable perspective.
Cancer
Cancer
You tend to play things close to the vest this morning, dear Cancer, with the Moon in your private solar twelfth house. Withdrawing even in small ways from mainstream activities, particularly if they’re demanding or competitive, makes sense now as it gives you the chance to regroup. You may want to settle an issue or tie up some loose ends now. Extra rest and/or time to yourself makes sense now, if you can manage it. The Moon emerges in your solar chart midday, moving into your sign and activating your desire to reach out, connect, and start anew on an emotional level. People take notice of you. You experience a feeling of urgency when it comes to filling your needs. This is your monthly reminder of your need to connect emotionally to the world around you as well as to embrace your feelings, allowing them to motivate and invigorate you.
Leo
Leo
You can enjoy a pleasant sense of camaraderie with others in the first half of the day, dear Leo. You might have some inspiring and stimulating conversations in your social network or interesting follow-up news. Networking or group activities can be satisfying and engaging, especially the exchange of ideas. It’s one of the better days for casually communicating in this retrograde Mercury cycle, and good for revisiting old ideas or discussions. You might turn back to an old interest that you didn’t get the chance to follow up on, and now resolve to pursue it further. Midday forward, the Moon moves through your solar twelfth house for a couple of days, turning your attention to the need for further reflection, which can be especially useful after some busy days.
Virgo
Virgo
The Moon continues its transit of your solar tenth house until midday, dear Virgo, and you have your priorities all sorted. Mind you, there can be some overemphasis on performance to the point that you are a little on edge, making the Moon’s move into your sector of dreams, visions, and happiness goals around noon very welcome. It makes sense to tackle your responsibilities as soon as possible to get them out of the way. Work and duties can be on the chaotic side, as you seem to have a lot going on. In the second half of the day, you seek out cooperative rather than competitive activities and situations. The less that’s expected of you, the more naturally you contribute, share, and connect with others. Especially since there has been heavier energy with you in recent days, friendships or casual connections might help you to release some of the tension you’ve been feeling in constructive ways.
Libra
Libra
Jupiter in your sign is in challenging aspect to Venus today, dear Libra, and it’s an energy that is best used for having a little fun. However, there is a tendency to want–or pursue–too much under this influence, to go over the top or to feel discontent with what you get, or to live beyond your means. You may be tempted to act totally out of character today, which could negatively but temporarily impact your reputation. Self-restraint and patience can save the day and can help you save face, too. Trying too hard may come across poorly when all you need to sell yourself is you! The Moon in your spirit and adventure sector all day helps you to rise above most problems, although its opposition to Saturn suggests you need to keep at least one foot on the ground.
Scorpio
Scorpio
You are inclined to throw much of yourself into whatever you’re doing in the first half of the day with the Moon in your dark solar eighth house, dear Scorpio. The themes of the eighth house are very much connected to your sign, so you understand its intensity. Whether it’s through a conversation with someone or with yourself, you’re inclined to pull important matter out from deep inside of you now, and it’s likely to do with getting a new take on a past issue. Thinking, writing, journaling or ruminating can get you in better touch with your inner needs, wants, and motivations. However, from midday forward, you turn your attention outward. This is a time of less thinking and more doing. The Moon’s move into the sign of Cancer each month usually inspires you to find natural outlets for expressing pent-up emotions, and today is no exception. You need it after some rather complex and possibly heavy days!
Sagittarius
Sagittarius
The Moon continues to transit your partnership sector until midday, dear Sagittarius, inclining you to make connections and seek out one-on-one exchanges. A partnership, love relationship, or friendship deserves some special attention now. You’re inclined to keep things light and playful, which is your best approach, at least until afternoon. You’re finding ways to combine togetherness and individuality quite seamlessly. Mercury’s current retrograde does sometimes mess with understanding in a relationship, but it can also be a time for a useful revisit of a past problem. The trick is to come at it with a new approach. The Moon’s transit of your solar eighth house in the second half of the day (and until Saturday) has you noticing and possibly dwelling on the hidden layers of a situation or relationship. People are complicated, and you may very well enjoy figuring them out now! Be sure to use this time to understand your deeper longings, too.
Capricorn
Capricorn
Aim to think before responding rather than react today, dear Capricorn, and you’ll be in great shape. The first half of the day is good for sorting things out — focusing on getting the small problems fixed so that you can feel more organized and freer to handle the big stuff. Heavy Pluto in Capricorn energy in recent days can have you feeling a little tense, but the Moon’s move into your partnership sector midday suggests that sharing some of the load with someone can be an emotional tonic. With this transit (good until Saturday), you prefer to share your ideas or activities with someone special, and/or you seek out the middle road, aiming for moderation — something you definitely need for at least a couple of days!
Aquarius
Aquarius
When the Moon is in Gemini each month, you tend to seek out a bit of extra attention or feel compelled to shake things up and enjoy yourself more thoroughly, dear Aquarius. The Moon spends the first half of the day in the sign of the Twins, and you’re ready to get creative. You approach others with more playfulness, confidence, and optimism than usual, and they tend to respond quite happily, ready to return the favor. People are drawn to your interesting perspective and ideas, as well as your good humor today. Conversations may frequently turn to the past. From midday forward, you’re gearing up to take care of business, or life’s circumstances seem to conspire to nudge you in that direction! You’ll find that you’re particularly sensitive to what’s out of balance or inconsistent in your life now and in the next few days. This frame of mind has its potential downfalls but can be very useful as you turn your attention to small problems that need fixing, effectively taking the pressure off over-thinking the bigger issues.
Pisces
Pisces
With the Moon’s continued transit of your home and family sector until midday, dear Pisces, you are in a self-protective or cautious, introspective mood. Your feelings are warm, and you tend to appreciate all that’s familiar, including close loved ones and creature comforts! Especially since there has been rather heavy and complicated Pluto energy recently, a focus on the simple things in your life can be very helpful now. You’re inclined to stick within your usual bounds, and this is good for you now, but the second half of the day tends to pull you out of your shell. You’ll experience a stronger need to express and share yourself with others. Recent tensions might be released through creative, entertaining activities. Pulling yourself away from a complex problem can sometimes give you a better perspective. Retrograde Mercury helps in this respect, as it encourages you to look at things in new ways.
You are a bit of a maverick. Although sensitive, you are not afraid to do your own thing! Personal magnetism and appeal are strong, although you can be quite pushy and manipulative at times when you want your way. You have good people skills when you need them, however, and you are adept at combining business and pleasure. It’s just that you are very charming and might get used to having things go your way as a result. Your main challenge in life is to put the past behind you and to avoid letting worries and fear rule your life. You are highly intuitive and imaginative. Very amorous, you live for the excitement of romance. You are very giving in love, and need to make sure you are met halfway or you could become resentful. Loyalty in a mate is an especially important quality for you.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Friday, August 18th
Aries
Aries
You have a strong desire to cocoon and enjoy familiar faces and places today, dear Aries, but outside concerns tend to weigh on your mind, and this plays with your ability to relax. Alternatively, part of you could be itching for a change, and another, equally compelling part would prefer to stick with the tried and true. Attempt to find a nice balance between responsibility and leisure. There can be a feeling that you have to throw yourself into one thing or another, when in fact a healthy balance will work out for the best. Also keep in mind that you may be taken the wrong way right now, simply because insecurities are more likely to emerge and people are putting up their protective shields, pretending they don’t care when they do.
Taurus
Taurus
It can be rather tricky to reach a compromise today, dear Taurus, or to connect with someone and feel confident about it fully. As well, you might be excited about something, but you’re met with cool or aloof responses. Try not to take things personally.Love and social relationships can seem complicated right now when, in fact, there is some unfortunate timing or insecurities at work that lead to missed connections. You can be a little moody, but if you remember that you’re in charge of your emotions, then you give yourself the power to alter the way you react to stressors in your environment. Work on building your own happiness, and the best you can do is hope others join you. Improvisation may not be easy today as you can be feeling out of sync, so it may be a good idea to plan ahead of yourself.
Gemini
Gemini
It can be difficult to get what you want today, dear Gemini, but save your energy for the important things. Be an informed listener and soft sell your ideas or desires today for best results, but keep in mind that people can be a little aloof, or at least appear that way with a Venus-Saturn influence that can be behind social clumsiness. While this is a generally good time for enjoying comfort and some level of indulgence, there can be worries about limited resources or someone may be disapproving today. Two strong forces compete with one another now. On the one hand, you want to enjoy comfortable, sensual, and leisurely living, but you are also very concerned with your responsibilities, or a partner reminds you of them! Strike up a compromise with yourself. With others, it may not be quite as easy. It can be hard to know whether you want to get close and comfortable or if you prefer to settle in and do your own thing.
Cancer
Cancer
With Venus in Cancer these days, you may be focusing on your personal image and ways to improve it, dear Cancer. However, with an awkward aspect occurring between Venus and Saturn today, you can be a bit touchy. Restlessness with your routine can be an issue, or you may be bothered by elements of your daily life that are overwhelming. A good part of you wants to languish, indulge, and pamper yourself, but another equally strong part wants to put things in order and set things straight, as you can’t seem to turn a blind eye to flaws and responsibilities, as much as you’d like to! Try not to stay on the fence. Instead of turning this into an either-or situation, try to manage to do both in small ways.
Leo
Leo
With Venus in an awkward angle with Saturn influencing the first half of today, dear Leo, you may be dealing with insecurities or feel limited by the restrictions put upon you in your love life or with children. Some feeling of discontent with your social life or a sense of being “stuck” creatively is temporary. You will need to review how well you are balancing work and play in your life, and what areas you may be neglecting — an imbalance with these can lead to unhappiness in both areas. Insecurities can seem to emerge out of nowhere, or you could be experiencing a delayed reaction to something you didn’t realize hurt you when it happened! If you’re faced with pressures or sudden attention when you’d rather spend some time alone, gracefully bow out and build up emotional strength. Something could be holding you back from expressing yourself, or there may be some off timing to deal with. Even so, with some space, you’ll feel that you’re in a better position of self-understanding by later today.
Virgo
Virgo
Planetary energies are a little awkward until afternoon today, dear Virgo, as pleasure-seeking Venus forms an awkward angle with serious Saturn. Your desire to enjoy yourself with friends may be curtailed either by family responsibilities or your own insecurity about venturing out. There can be some uncertainty about how to deal with a friend or other social matter, or you may be feeling torn between the desire for togetherness and affection and the need for some emotional space. Mixed signals are certainly possible now! Objectivity is difficult if you’re distracted so that if an important decision has to be made, you might need some silence or solitude to come to a fair conclusion. Treat doubts as red flags only if they persist for some time, as they may simply have to do with insecurities. Once you get in better touch with your responsibilities and which ones truly need doing (Virgos often feel over-obligated), you’ll be able to enjoy yourself more.
Libra
Libra
You’re likely to wrestle with whether you should express yourself straightforwardly or say what others want to hear today, dear Libra. A Venus-Saturn awkward angle can act to undercut your confidence temporarily and your communications may be a little guarded. You might end up deliberating over a response for far longer than is healthy. Avoid straining yourself. Aim to be polite and don’t worry excessively about how your message will be received. However, do take extra care if you are making a statement in a more formal setting. If you’re worried about your performance today, try to work on fixing weaknesses in a reasonable, moderate, well-paced manner but don’t try too hard to please others. You’re the best judge of what needs improving. Once you have your priorities straight, you’ll feel far better about your day.
Scorpio
Scorpio
Venus in your solar ninth house and in a Water sign these days softens your demeanor and improves your overall popularity, dear Scorpio. The Moon is in the same sector today, encouraging you to embrace new experiences, but Saturn acts as a nag as it forms a quincunx with both today. You may wish to branch out and try something new, but there can be hesitation due to lack of funds or, on an emotional level, some inertia or concerns holding you back. You may be feeling a financial pinch. There could be some wavering about going forward with a relationship or financial matter, and this may very well be a sign to wait something out. With confidence temporarily shaky, it may not be the time to buck authority or throw caution to the wind. However, a compromise may be possible — you may very well find ways to satisfy both your adventurous and practical side today.
Sagittarius
Sagittarius
If you’re feeling critical of others or disappointment with the people around you, dear Sagittarius, it may be that on some level you’re feeling excluded. Try not to wait around for others to sense your needs. Ask for what you want, or at least put yourself in the position to receive it, but keep in mind that the social atmosphere today (until evening) is on the cool or awkward side. A Venus-Saturn aspect inclines us to emotional defensiveness, but even if you feel that people are expecting (or demanding) too much from you these days, you’re better off being gentle and firm rather than taking offense. Emotional attachments can be hard to understand today, but this is temporary. Save important decisions and sensitive discussions for clearer times.
Capricorn
Capricorn
Excesses, errors, and discrepancies from the past may be in serious play today, dear Capricorn, and guilt may surface. Learn to recognize guilt even if it is cleverly disguised! Try not to take social blunders personally, as people may be a little awkward or distant. Someone in your life may be unsure how to approach you or how to behave. Today, you are inclined to pull yourself out of stressful situations rather than meet challenges head-on. It may very well be the right thing to do at the moment, as energy levels can be low if your emotions are fragile. However, don’t allow past mistakes and wrongs hold you back from enjoying the present, particularly your relationships. If timing is off with someone, try not to take it to heart.
Aquarius
Aquarius
You could get a sense that someone is hiding something from you today, dear Aquarius, but putting pressure on is unlikely to lead to a happy outcome. It’s probably best to adopt a “wait and see” approach right now. There may be some confusing social or work situations that require waiting things out before clarity comes. Disagreements or disconnects, as well as indecision, are temporary but possibly instructive as well — waiting something out can help you figure out what you actually want. While you have a pleasant relationship with your work and routines these days, your mind may be somewhere else altogether, or concerns that you’re missing something important or worries about friendships can limit this enjoyment if you’re not careful.
Pisces
Pisces
There can be a conflict between your indulgent side and your responsible side today, dear Pisces, with neither coming out a clear winner! Your need for affection is stronger than usual with Venus in your solar fifth house of pleasure these days, and this can be at the root of your desire to pamper yourself or to do something different. However, demands of the outside world are high. Strive for balance rather than throwing yourself into one and neglecting the other. Some form of indecision is likely to weigh on you today, but it may be better to weight things out anyhow. There can be some off-timing in relationships and business, but nothing you can’t handle! As soon as you reconcile how much you can work and how much you can play today, you’re in a much better position.
The Devil Tarot card expresses the realm of the taboo — the culturally rejected wildness and undigested shadow side that each of us carries in our subconscious. This shadow is actually at the core of our being, which we cannot get rid of and will never succeed in taming. From its earliest versions, which portrayed a vampire-demon, The Devil evoked the church-fueled fear that a person could “lose their soul” to wild and passionate forces.
The Devil image which emerged in the mid-1700s gives us a more sophisticated rendition — that of the “scapegoated goddess,” whose esoteric name is Baphomet. Volcanic reserves of passion and primal desire empower her efforts to overcome the pressure of stereotyped roles and experience true freedom of soul.

Your EarthSky News for August 17: Moon on its way to the eclipse
Insights and a cool chart from astronomer Guy Ottewell. Plus, if you click in, you’ll find photos of waning crescent moons from the past few mornings …
The moon has three-and-a-half days to go until its new phase – the moment, this time, when it will stamp on the sun. The strides of the moon toward its appointment with the sun are shown in the detail above, from the sky-scene illustration in The Under-Standing of Eclipses.
Each morning from now on, you could see it take one stride (of a bit less than an outstretched handspan) nearer to the sun. So you could each morning be up one hour later to see its dwindling crescent.
Bottom line: Sky photos from EarthSky friends, plus insights and charts from astronomer Guy Ottewell, related to the moon’s movement on our sky’s dome toward the August 21, 2017 eclipse.

Moon shines down upon a sea of Light,
Shifting sands lay singing in the Heart of the Night.
I looked upon a scene that gripped me to the core,
White-clad maidens below were dancing on the shore.
Sweet sounds slipped from moon-lit throats,
Wind whipped hair abound,
Lit by the light within and without,
The Women circled ’round.
As I stood, water engulfed my feet,
My body swayed to your Heavenly Heart beat.
Wind and wave and fire light,
Paled in my mind Earthly delight.
Time slipped by me as you held your embrace,
And windblown spray covered my face.
Protected deep within your Womb,
I could feel the tender pain of Life’s bloom.
Candles flared high as the Dance progressed,
Deep inside with a healing touch you blessed.
All around, wind, wave and fire shouted of your life,
Your light speared deep within, soothing my strife.
Divine Mother, Goddess of Light,
To you I come seeking protection from the night.
Come home to shelter within your arm,
Surrounded by Love, hidden from harm.
Holy Mother, Queen of Heaven and Earth,
From you we all trace our Birth.
Heavenly Goddess, light from above,
Shine down upon us, we pray for your Love.

First things first: yes, you can trust our eclipse times.
If you are planning to watch a solar or lunar eclipse, our eclipse pages are a great place to get reliable information. We have tested the information we display, compared it with sources like NASA and the Astronomical Almanac—and tested it again. You will not miss out on an eclipse because our times are off.
So why choose us? While our eclipse times are highly consistent with all of the most reputable sources in the field, we provide more service. Our eclipse maps, animations, and eclipse library simply make eclipse data easier and more fun to use.
Total Accuracy Is Impossible
Eclipse times can be determined mathematically. You only need to take into account factors like the size of the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon, as well as their movements in relation to one another, do the math—et voilà: the result will tell you when an eclipse starts, reaches its maximum, and ends at a location of your choice. But only just. There are some factors that make it impossible to be 100% precise. They include:
Neither the Moon nor the Earth is perfectly round; they are both slightly squashed. Their exact shapes can only be determined up to a certain degree of precision. This means that the numbers any eclipse prediction is based on are merely approximations.
There are mountains and valleys on the Moon, so its shadow has a slightly rugged edge. Solar eclipse predictions usually do not take this factor into account. If you happen to stand in the shadow of a lunar mountain at the beginning or end of a total solar eclipse, totality may last a tiny bit longer for you.
The mountains and valleys on Earth further distort the timing of a solar eclipse. Our calculations are based on the size of the Moon’s shadow at sea level. However, its umbra, the portion of the shadow where the Sun appears completely eclipsed, is cone-shaped. As a consequence, the higher you are above sea level, the larger the shadow—and the longer totality lasts for you.
The movements of the Earth and the Moon are not constant. While we know that the Earth revolves around the Sun in about 365.24219 days and the Moon completes a full orbit around Earth in relation to the Sun in about 29.530575 days, it is impossible to predict their precise speeds on a daily basis as a number of forces can speed things up or slow them down. This means that a day on Earth is rarely exactly 24 hours long and that the Moon’s shadow may move slightly faster or slower during a solar eclipse than predicted.
We don’t know exactly how large the Sun is. Even NASA wouldn’t be able to tell you the exact diameter of our star! The margin of error is only about 0.03%, but that it is enough to influence the times for a solar eclipse by a few seconds as the size of the Moon’s shadow also depends on the size of the Sun.
The Earth’s atmosphere blocks some of the sunlight, so our planet’s shadow has a slightly fuzzy edge. During partial or total lunar eclipses, this makes it difficult to determine the precise moment when the shadow first touches the lunar surface, which marks the beginning of the eclipse.
Very Small Margin of Error
So, how accurate are our eclipse times? It’s difficult to put a number on it as any potential deviation depends on the type of eclipse, its date, your location, and other factors. But unless you need to know the moments an eclipse starts, ends, or reaches its maximum down to the second, it’s fair to say that our predictions are so precise that, if there is a deviation, it is very small and you will most likely not notice it.
The factors mentioned above, while making it impossible to be absolutely precise, only cause minute distortions. For example, the fact that the lunar shadow increases in size as you move towards the Moon creates a slightly longer totality at higher altitudes. However, because the lunar shadow moves at such a high speed and its diameter increases at a very slow rate, this difference only amounts to fractions of a second. Even on Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain, the Moon’s shadow is only about 80 meters (260 feet) wider than at sea level.
Similarly, the unpredictability of the Earth’s rotational speed, while having the potential to significantly distort the predictions of eclipses in the far future, poses less of a problem for the calculation of eclipse times in the next few years. The closer the eclipse is in time, the more reliable the calculated times are.
In terms of the location of the Moon’s shadow during solar eclipses, the margin of error may sound pretty large at first. For example, the location of the Moon’s shadow during the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 shown on the Eclipse Map can be off by about 1 kilometer (3300 feet). However, that is the approximate distance the Moon’s shadow covers in only 1 second, so this imprecision amounts to no more than a heartbeat for spectators on the ground. Having said that, if you are at the very edge of the path of the total eclipse, it is probably wise to move at least 1 kilometer towards its center to make sure you will not miss out on totality.
Beware of the Horizon
It is worth noting that the times we display for sunrise and sunset, as well as moonrise and moonset, are based on a flat horizon where the observer is at the same altitude as the horizon. For this reason, it is important to avoid obstacles like hills or buildings if you are planning to watch an eclipse where the Sun or Moon appears close to the horizon.
Please also note that in rare cases, our list of eclipses seen in a particular location may not include a solar eclipse that occurs during sunrise or sunset. However, we are already in the process of tweaking our models to fix that issue.
According to NASA, the following materials should never be used to view a solar eclipse:
sunglasses of any kind
color film
medical X-ray film
smoked glass
floppy disks
The Sun’s UV radiation can burn the retinas in the eyes leading to permanent damage or even blindness. This can occur even if your eyes are exposed to direct sunlight for just a few seconds.
Safely Watch a Solar Eclipse
DIY: Project the Sun.
The only way to safely view the Sun – eclipsed or not – is to either project or filter the Sun’s rays.
Projectors
Projection works well. You can make your own box projector or use a telescope or binoculars. However, don’t look through the telescope’s eyepiece or side-mounted finder scope while projecting the Sun’s image onto a screen.
Eclipse Glasses
If you are not the DIY type, the American Astronomical Society has compiled a list of vendors where you can buy safe eclipse glasses.
Use protective gear.
NASA recommends welder’s glasses rated 14 or higher. These can be found at your local welding supply store. Keep in mind that welder glass grading may be different in different countries.
Solar Filters
You can use special solar filters to watch the Sun during a solar eclipse, but use the proper type of solar filter that is designed for eclipses. Check that filters do not crack under the Sun’s magnified and focused intensity. Solar filters must be treated with care, or they can quickly become damaged and unsafe to use.
Make a Box Pinhole Projector to Safely Watch a Solar Eclipse
A simple and safe way to watch a solar eclipse is with a box pinhole projector. It is easy to make from a cardboard box and ordinary household items.
Diagram of a box pinhole projector. Watch an eclipse through a pinhole projector.
Project the Sun
Never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection. You can seriously hurt your eyes and even go blind.
Projecting the Sun in a box projector, with binoculars or a telescope, or using only 2 pieces of cardboard is a safe and easy way to see a solar eclipse.
Projector Using a Box
This type of pinhole projector works on the same principle as a basic pinhole projector. However, the box makes this projector much sturdier and easier to set on a surface. And it only requires a few extra items to construct.
You Need:
a long cardboard box or tube
scissors
duct tape
aluminum foil
a pin or a thumbtack
a sharp knife or paper cutter
a sheet of white paper
What to Do:
Cut a rectangular hole at the end of the box. You can tape 2 boxes together to make a long box. The longer the box, the larger the projected image.
Using the scissors, cut out a piece of the aluminum foil slightly larger than the rectangular hole. Make sure the foil is completely flat and not crinkled.
Tape the foil over the rectangular hole in the box.
Use the pin to poke a tiny hole in the center of the foil.
Tape the sheet of paper on the inside of the other end of the box.
Stand with your back toward the Sun. Place the box over your head with the pinhole towards the Sun. Adjust your position until you see a small projection, a reversed image, of the eclipsed Sun on the paper inside the box.
Using a Tube?
If you are using a long tube or taping 2 tubes together, cut the end of the tubes and tape the foil with a pinhole on 1 end. On the other end, tape a piece of white paper over the end of the tube. This will act as the screen. Close to this end, cut a rectangular hole using the knife. This will be your viewing window.
With your back toward the Sun, point the end with the foil toward the Sun, angling the tube along the Sun’s rays. Look into the tube through the viewing window until you see a reversed image of the eclipsed Sun on the screen.
Keep Safe!
Never look at the Sun directly without protective eye gear. Even sunglasses cannot protect your eyes from the damage the Sun’s rays can do to them.
Always keep your back toward the Sun while looking at a pinhole projection.
Do not look at the Sun through the pinhole.
No Good for Planet Transits
Unfortunately, for planet transits like the Mercury Transit on November 11–12, 2019, Mercury is too small and too far away to be projected in this manner. However, a projector made from binoculars or a telescope can work.

Wednesday, August 16
Look for the waning crescent Moon this morning as it hovers just east of the Hyades star cluster in Taurus the Bull. The two objects clear the horizon by 1 a.m. local daylight time and climb halfway to the zenith by the time morning twilight begins. The Moon appears 35 percent lit and easily outshines the stars of the V-shaped Hyades. First-magnitude Aldebaran, which marks one tip of the V, appears brighter than the rest of the cluster’s stars because it actually lies in the foreground.

The Moon is in Gemini.

On Wednesday, August 16th, We Honor the Goddess Iduna
IDUNA
IN ANCIENT TIMES, THE Norse people considered apples essential for the continuation of life. Associated with the resurrection, containers of these sacred fruit were placed in graves, perhaps to nurture mortals as they journeyed from one life to the next. The Norse also believed that a soul could be passed from body to body, contained within the flesh of an apple. Many European folktales tell of infertile women who miraculously conceive a child after eating an apple.
Not surprisingly, the Norse credited the apple with granting eternal life to their deities. They honored Iduna as the goddess responsible for growing this fruit, which was eaten by the gods and goddesses to retain their youth and beauty. Iduna grew the golden apples of immortality in her enchanted western garden named Appleland; in the stories of King Arthur, Appleland was called Avalon—the idyllic country of immortal life.
Iduna was renowned for her youthful beauty, and was married to Bragi, the handsome god of poetry. As keeper of the golden apples, she was reponsible for the well-being of the Norse pantheon. Though she did her best to protect the gods and goddesses from harm, the mischievous fire god Loki nearly undermined their immortality.

Magickal Applications for Wednesday
To the Romans, this day was called Dies Mercurii, or “Mercury’s day” Mercury was a popular character in the Roman pantheon. A messenger of the gods, he presided over commerce, trade, and anything that required skill or dexterity. The Celts also worshiped Mercury and eventually equated him with the Norse god Odin (some spelling variations on this name include Wotan, Wodin, and Wodan). In Norse mythologies, Odin, like Mercury, is associated with poetry and music. Interestingly enough, both Odin and Mercury were regarded as psychopomps, or the leaders of souls, in their individual mythologies.
Odin, one of the main gods in Norse mythology, was constantly seeking wisdom. He traveled the world in disguise as a one-eyed man with a long gray beard, wearing an old, beat-up hat and carrying a staff or a spear (which brings to my mind images of Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings). In the Old English language, this day of Mercury evolved into Wodnes daeg, “Woden’s day,” or Wednesday.
Wednesday carries all of the planetary and magickal energies and associations of the witty and nimble god Mercury himself. Some of these mercurial traits included good communication skills, cleverness, intelligence, creativity, business sense, writing, artistic talent, trickiness, and thievery. And don’t forget all of those wise and enigmatic qualities associated with the Norse god Odin/Wodin, not to mention the goddess Athena’s contributions of music, the arts, handmade crafts, and writing. Wednesdays afford excellent opportunities for seeking wisdom, changing your circumstances, and improving your skills, be they in trade and commerce, music and art, or in communication and writing.

Rosemary
Bay leaves
4 drops spearmint extract
Almond base oil
3 marigold petals
A few moonstone chips
Crush together equal amounts of rosemary and bay leaves. Add four drops of spearmint extract and blend into an almond base oil. Add three marigold petals and a few moonstone chips. Allow the oil to settle for thirty days in a dark place before use. Anoint pulse points or pillow. This oil promotes dreaming and helps you remember your dreams.
Here are some other things you can do give your dreams a boost of energy:
1. Keep a moonstone or amethyst by your bed.
2. Make use of a dream catcher.
3. Record your dreams daily in your journal.
4. Keep track of what you eat for dinner the night before and which herb was prevalent in the meal.
5. Take a magical dream bath before retiring for the night. Passion flower or lavender scents work very well for this purpose.
6. Avoid taking medicines before bed.

The Witches Current Moon Phase for August 16
Waning Crescent
Illumination: 34%
Phase Details for – Wednesday, August 16, 2017

Moon Angle: 0.55

Good energy is with you for connecting, learning, sharing, and communicating, dear Aries, although as the Moon and Saturn face off across your communications sector later today, there may be some frustration with differences of opinion or you begrudgingly need to crack down on your duties. Watch for overreaction and overindulgence today in general. A heavy influence this morning can have you second-guessing your decisions or worrying too much about your performance, and a lighter influence later today can brighten your mood but could also lead you to promise more than you can deliver. The latter is a Venus-Jupiter square, and while it’s one of the easier challenging aspects, there are some things to watch for. For one, people may be expecting a lot from you, and you may be tempted to go along with something just to make everyone happy, but this can backfire on you. For another, you may be enabling someone and they, you! Neither of these things is too serious, but if you can, remember your usual limits and don’t venture too far beyond them.
Taurus
Taurus
With a Venus-Jupiter square influencing your day, there is a real tendency to blow things out of proportion, dear Taurus. Venus is your ruler and is currently enjoying a guest stay in your communications sector, but Jupiter’s influence on Venus can lead you to believe you can do it all, and more! This can manifest as taking on too many projects, missing deadlines, or lining up more activities than you can reasonably manage. Alternatively, you could be reading too much into information you receive now and wasting a lot of time on something that isn’t even true. Aim to take things with a grain of salt, and avoid skipping steps and getting to a premature conclusion! Watch for making promises now if they’re based solely on the good mood of the moment.
Gemini
Gemini
Your feelings seem a little more colorful than usual as the Moon spends the day in your sign, dear Gemini. You are more in touch than usual with how you feel about recent and current events. Instead of ignoring or managing them, listen to your feelings and interpret them. You can learn a lot from your gut feelings and reactions, but be aware of two influences active today that can skew your perceptions a little. The first of these, active this morning, can have you stumbling on a decision. Whether to take action or wait things out can be the question. The second influence in effect later today is entirely different — it may have the effect of speeding up the decision-making process to the point that you jump to conclusions or jump into situations without enough thought. This is especially the case with money and love today!
Cancer
Cancer
While there is a retiring tendency with the Moon in your privacy sector all day, dear Cancer, Venus in your sign’s relationship with Jupiter puts you in the spotlight anyhow. However, it may, at times, be uncomfortable or pressured. Watch for impatience and overreaching. To get out of something you don’t want to do, you might promise something bigger, but that’s just unkind to your future self! You can be in an elevated good mood as the day advances, but you could also be expecting too much, and this sets you up for ups and downs. Try not to take others on that ride. You might also have great intentions for making improvements at home or making plans with loved ones, but you might also lose wind or motivation quickly. However, if you center yourself and aim to get in touch with what’s making you restless, you can avoid these little problems. Pamper yourself today, but don’t go so overboard that you have to pay the price in the future.
Leo
Leo
The Moon in your solar eleventh house all day points to a greater need than usual to enjoy a sense of community or to belong to a group or with friends, dear Leo. There is a happier outlook today, but perhaps a little volatile. Something started too quickly may burn out in the same fashion, not only because the next few weeks are not ideal for new launches, in general, but also because there is a tendency to become highly enthusiastic quickly without considering the practicality of your plans. You might begin a project or endeavor with gusto, but it may not “take” now with Venus in conflict with Jupiter. Of course, you can certainly make an effort and take your chances, especially if it’s something you enjoy, but try not to take on too much to the point of overwhelming yourself. A good mood or over-estimation of feelings and capabilities can lead to making commitments or promises that are later regretted. Enjoy yourself, but pace yourself as you do.
Virgo
Virgo
You’re more concerned about the rules and your performance or how others see you today, dear Virgo, with the Moon at the top of your solar chart making you feel more accountable. Today’s Venus-Jupiter square can steer you away from your priorities, however, and can challenge your concentration or commitment. It tends to stir up impatience with anything that seems dull or meaningless. While you can certainly use this restless energy to make changes, you might also be seeing things in extremes or making mountains out of molehills. Watch for overspending and overvaluing things, as well as relying too much on plans with friends. If you aim to hold off on decisions now, then it’s a good time to stretch your imagination and consider new things and ideas.
Libra
Scorpio
Scorpio
Emotions run deeper than usual today, dear Scorpio, or you are taking them or yourself more seriously! A Venus-Jupiter influence kicks in as the day advances, and it can encourage pleasure-seeking and fun activities, although it can also lead to over-indulgence. There are a number of ways we can end up borrowing from the future, such as buying on credit, but also non-financial routes, such as overindulging and promising ourselves we’ll cut back tomorrow, or making promises so you can put something off. You may want to watch for these tendencies to prevent future regret. As well, keep in mind that feelings are expanded now, and you might end up making more of a situation than is necessary or healthy. Tame impulsive decisions, and you’ll put yourself in much better shape for personal enjoyment. You may end up discovering areas of your life that could stand a change or expansion in the process.
Sagittarius
Sagittarius
You can be swinging up and down with emotions today, dear Sagittarius, but if you aim to keep your expectations in check, you’ll put yourself in the position to enjoy yourself, stretch your mind, and discover your feelings for someone or something. Unrealistic expectations in a relationship do nobody any favors, as they put the pressure on and make you or someone else feel they haven’t measured up. With Venus in challenging aspect to Jupiter (your ruler) today, intentions are likely good, but there is a tendency to go too far or over the top in your pursuit of a goal. However, with self-awareness, this needn’t be difficult. In fact, restlessness stirred today can give some huge clues as to what may be missing from your life.
Capricorn
Capricorn
You may continue to swing from feeling confident and second-guessing yourself or others today, dear Capricorn, but as the day advances, you feel less weighed down by frustration and seek out greener pastures. Mind you, this is due to a square between Venus and Jupiter, which has the potential of opening your heart to new experiences and possibilities, but it also seems to encourage going too far with this. Expectations may be too high or simply unrealistic. Relationship problems may be magnified now, mainly because of these expectations that put undue pressure on the people involved. This isn’t fair to you or others, so do your best to take things as they come and adjust. Be cautious when it comes to speaking too soon or too much about a matter, particularly in a public way. Taking charge of your life direction or formulating goals can help improve a relationship.
Aquarius
Aquarius
This is another day when we may be making too much of a situation, dear Aquarius, and decisions may be poor as a result. Your restless spirit is best fed with a varied routine, conversation, or knowledge, but a Venus-Jupiter square today can mislead you into thinking that it’s about something else altogether or something elusive. Finding a happy medium between filling your responsibilities and satiating your desire for experience and excitement may be challenging, but doable with some patience and self-awareness. Mistakes made now are likely due to overblown expectations and lack of foresight, particularly in your relationships or at work. Be careful when it comes to what you say and what you sign just now, as promises made today may be difficult to keep later. Keeping these in check puts you in a far better position to enjoy yourself and mix things up just enough to freshen up your mood.
Pisces
Pisces
The Moon in your home and family sector all day points to a legitimate need for extra security, comfort, familiarity, and rest, dear Pisces. Planetary influences today, however, tend to challenge you to seek out more from life than the ordinary, but be on the lookout for becoming misguided by your own whims. Without self-study, you may not be in touch with what you actually want and end up chasing rainbows. Do your best to remember your usual limits, as circumstances can seem to encourage you to forget them today! Judgment can be compromised just for now if you make decisions based on the feeling of the moment, which is likely very positive but perhaps overdone. There is a tendency to make promises or statements that are taken as more than they are. Do what you can to tame excessive impulses so that you can enjoy a smoother, more moderate day.
You have exceptionally strong convictions, and some might call you hard-headed! You are a highly independent thinker. You value your freedom more than most. You never stop learning, and you accumulate knowledge easily because you are so open to it. You can reach success on your wit alone. As intelligent as you are, you are also extremely intuitive and have a spiritual side. At times, you can be uncompromising and willful, simply because you believe in yourself and your ideas. You are attracted to, or you attract, competent people who you admire for their sharp minds, regal manner, or wisdom. You need to totally respect the person you are with, and you will go to great lengths to support and accommodate the people you love.
Famous people born today: Madonna, Timothy Hutton, Kathie Lee Gifford, James Cameron, Steve Carrell, Rumer Willis, Cameron Monaghan.

Your Horoscopes for Thursday, August 17th
Aries
The Hierophant Tarot this card refers to a master and the learning of practical lessons from the study of natural law. This energy of this card points to some agent or resource that can reveal the secrets of life, the cycles of the Moon and tides, the links between human beings and the heavens.
Because monasteries were the only places a person could learn to read and write in the Middle Ages, a Hierophant was one to whom a student would petition for entry. He was the one to set the curriculum for the neophyte’s course of study.
Often pictured with the right hand raised in blessing, the Hierophant is linked with the ancient lineage of Melchezidek, initiator of the Hebrew priestly tradition, the one who passes on the teachings. All shamans of any tradition draw upon this archetype.
In the most practical terms, The Emperor Tarot card represents the highest leadership, a head of state, or the most exemplary and powerful person in the realm. This archetypal ruler is responsible for the affairs of a society or community, which are directly proportional to his well being and happiness.
The more enlightenment and cosmic perspective this energy brings, the better life is for all. The Emperor archetype masters the world of matter and physical manifestation. When you apply this card to your situation, acknowledge your potentials for mastery. Reinforce a sense of sovereignty within yourself, despite any self-limiting beliefs, habits, or appearances to the contrary.

The Chariot is the representation of Victory and the personality traits required to attain victory. The Chariot indicates self-awareness and control. Courage—the ability to overcome fear and confront the unknown head on–is a primary ingredient of any victorious campaign and is denoted by the Chariot. So too is force of will. Often success is as much the product of will power and a refusal to surrender as it is anything else. The Chariot also represents the healthy personality of someone who believes in themselves; someone who can take control of the situation and bring events to a positive end. His successes come in competition with others.

Your Earth Sky News for August 16th: Moon that’ll cover sun on August 21 is called a Black Moon
Like Blue Moon, Black Moon is a name from folklore. It’s the name for the 3rd of 4 new moons in a season. The August 21 total solar eclipse is caused by such a moon. Some will call it a Black Moon eclipse.
The moon turns new on August 21, 2017 at 18:30 UTC. Some will call it a Black Moon, for a reason entirely unrelated to eclipses. More about that below. A moon at the new phase comes most nearly – for any particular month – to passing between the Earth and sun. This August, 2017 new moon makes that pass directly over the sun’s face, causing the much-anticipated August 21 total solar eclipse . On that day, the day of the coming new moon, the moon will pass between the sun and Earth. The moon’s shadow will fall on Earth. Those in the shadow’s path will witness the solar eclipse, a beautiful sight in the sky, and a dramatic turning of day to dark in the middle of the day.
So … Black Moon. Black Moon eclipse. Why that name? The moon will, of course, in this total solar system and all total solar eclipses appear black in front of the sun’s face during the brief minutes of totality. But that’s not why. In this case, Black Moon stems from folklore, that is, from traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community. Prior to the internet, these names were passed by word of mouth. Black Moon is similar to Blue Moon, which, by one definition, can be the third of four full moons in a season. Black Moon is the name used for the third of four new moons in one season, with a season being the period of time between a solstice and an equinox (or vice versa).
Most of the time, there are only three new moons in one season. But if the first new moon comes early enough in the season, it’s possible for a fourth new moon to sneak in before that season comes to an end. That’s exactly what happens during the Northern Hemisphere summer (Southern Hemisphere winter) of 2017:
2017 Jun 21: June solstice
2017 Jun 24: new moon
2017 Jul 23: new moon
2017 Aug 21: new moon
2017 Sep 20: new moon
2017 Sep 22: Sept equinox
Of course, all new moons are, essentially, black from our earthly perspective. New moons come once each month, as the moon orbits Earth. On the day of new moon – unless we’re viewing a total solar eclipse, we don’t see the new moon. That’s because a new moon rises when the sun rises. It sets when the sun sets. It crosses the sky with the sun during the day. Its fully illuminated face, or day side, is turned entirely away from us.
Modern techniques – telescopes, filters, photography – have made it possible to see the moon even at the instant it becomes new.
It’s only as the moon moves in orbit, as its lighted hemisphere begins to come into view from Earth, that we can see it in our sky. Then we see the moon in the west after sunset as a slim waxing crescent – what some call a young moon.
From the U.S. – with autumn approaching – most of us won’t see the young moon again until August 23. It’ll be in the evening sky on August 22, too, but – with the angle of the ecliptic, or sun’s path, slanting low at this time of year with respect to the evening horizon – it’ll be hard to see.
Still, especially if you’re traveling back from the path of totality on August 22 or 23, watch for the young moon. You might catch it along some country highway, in the west shortly after sunset!

Stars, Gas, and Dust Battle in the Carina Nebula Image Credit & Copyright: Bastien Foucher
Explanation: Chaos reigns in the Carina Nebula where massive stars form and die. Striking and detailed, this close-up of a portion of the famous nebula is a combination of light emitted by hydrogen (shown in red) and oxygen (shown in blue). Dramatic dark dust knots and complex features revealed are sculpted by the winds and radiation of Carina’s massive and energetic stars. One iconic feature of the Carina Nebula is the dark V-shaped dust lane that occurs in the top half of the image. The Carina Nebula spans about 200 light years, lies about 7,500 light years distant, and is visible with binoculars toward the southern constellation of Carina. In a billion years after the dust settles — or is destroyed, and the gas dissipates — or gravitationally condenses, then only the stars will remain — but not even the brightest ones.
Add sunspots to the list of wondrous sights to look for during the total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017
On August 14, 2017, a new active region showing small sunspots appeared on the eastern limb, or edge, of the surface of the sun. If this region on the sun remains active or evolves, the new sunspot(s) will – for those with access to telescopes – complement other amazing sights during the total solar eclipse of Monday, August 21, 2017. That’s great news and unexpected, since we’re now so near Solar Minimum, an 11-year cycle of activity on the sun, and sunspots aren’t as frequent this year as they were a few years ago. Spaceweather.com reported on August 14:
Suddenly, the eastern limb of the sun is crackling with minor solar flares, heralding the approach of a new sunspot …
The coming sunspot(s) likely require magnification to be visible, and please remember: always use safe solar filters whenever you observe or take pictures of the sun.
As the sun rotates, new sunspots appearing on the sun’s edge usually take from 5 to 6 days to reach the sun’s center – that is, the Earth-facing center of our star – and may take a total of from 11 to 12 days to reach the opposite edge of the sun. This means that if the new sunspot(s) that appeared on August 14 remain visible, these features should be located not far from the center area of the sun during the August 21 solar eclipse.
Sunspots are regions of intense magnetic activity which appear dark and are “cooler” or less hot than other areas on the surface of the sun. Sometimes they grow several times the size of Earth’s diameter.
On the morning of August 14, there were solar flares or explosions in the new active region of the solar surface. The largest was categorized as a C1-class explosion, and Spaceweather.com pointed out:
During Solar Maximum, such a solar flare would be considered too minor to report. Now, however, the sun is close to Solar Minimum, so even a C-flare is noteworthy. In fact, it is noteworthy. A typical C-class solar flare releases as much energy as 1 billion WWII atomic bombs. Only on the sun, which is itself a 1027 ton self-contained nuclear explosion, would such a blast be considered puny.
Amateur astronomers with safely-filtered solar telescopes are encouraged to monitor the eastern limb for further developments.
Bottom line: A sunspot is becoming visible on the edge of the sun and should be in a good place to be viewed during the partial phases of the August 21 total solar eclipse.

This will never happen again in your lifetime! On August 21, 2017, a truly historic event will take place in the skies: a Total Solar Eclipse will cross the entire United States from West Coast to East Coast. The last time an eclipse spanned the United States (and only the United States) was before the “United States” even existed … in the year 1257!
In general, Total Eclipses over even the slightest part of the U.S. have been rare during our lifetime — the last Total Eclipse that was visible to anyone in the U.S. was in 1991, but you could only see it from Hawaii. Before that, there was a Total Eclipse visible in 1979, but that one was only visible in the Northwest states, and one in 1970 that could only be seen on the East Coast. Otherwise, the only eclipses you’ve seen in the U.S. in nearly 50 years have been partial eclipses. Hopefully by now you are realizing what an incredibly rare treat this upcoming eclipse is!
Spanning from Oregon to South Carolina, this epic cosmic event has been named the Great American Eclipse. The “path of totality” (where you must be in order to see the Total Eclipse) also crosses over parts of Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina. Thankfully, even if you aren’t in the path of totality during the eclipse, you can still see a partial eclipse from most of the U.S. However, the closer you are to the path of totality, the more impactful the eclipse will be!
The path of totality:
What is a Total Solar Eclipse?
During a Total Solar Eclipse, the Moon passes in front of the Sun, totally blocking out the Sun and its light from our view here on Earth. Because the Sun and Moon must be in the same place in the sky, a Solar Eclipse will always happen on a New Moon. On August 21, 2017, for 2 minutes or more, those in the path of totality will experience a complete blackout. It will be as if night has suddenly fallen upon us in the middle of the day. You will be able to see the stars against the black sky, and Mercury, Venus, and Mars will all be visible, too! Plants and animals are even tricked by this brief but total darkness, and will immediately react as if it is nighttime.
If you are near, but not in, the path of totality during this Great American Eclipse, you will see the Sun partially eclipsed by the Moon, but you will not experience total darkness.
What does this mean in Astrology?
This Great American Eclipse will happen when both the Sun and Moon are in Leo, and coincides with the Leo New Moon. Leo is a sign of expression and creativity, but also drama and pride, so you can expect things to get intense around this eclipse!
Astrologer Rick Levine explains, “Solar Eclipses may appear disruptive as they break up blockages in our lives.” This Solar Eclipse in Leo offers you a profound opportunity to realize the changes you must make in your own life.
The Pope says it is time for a test about promises. Oh, it is easy to promise. It costs nothing. Can you look someone in the eye, or they you, and say: “I want you to know that I kept my promise?” It is not too late to keep agreements. If you have avoided a conversation you vowed to have with yourself or promises you intended to keep, now is also the time.
Use your powers of freedom and flexibility to drive your future.
General Meaning
The Chariot Tarot card points to a triumphal feeling of freedom, as if the Charioteer is being paraded through the streets as a hero (or heroine). The card reflects congratulations for high achievement, and serves as a sign of empowerment.
Huge wheels and frisky steeds speed the rate at which the driver’s will power can be realized. This kind of charge makes more of the world accessible to one ambitious enough to seize The Chariot’s reins. But there is danger in this feeling of freedom, because of the increased rate of change and its power to magnify mistakes in judgment. As a seasoned warrior, the Charioteer is called upon to be extra attentive to the way ahead.
In the Advice Position
Look upon the movements of change as full of promise and adventure.
The card in the Advice position suggests a course of action which will harmonize what you want with what is currently possible.
The Chariot advises that you be prepared for changes that might include a move or an opportunity to travel. The Charioteer travels light and stays open to fresh experiences that change with every valley or mountain pass.
You may be asked to live out of a suitcase and consider every place your home for a while. Be receptive to new people who come into your life. Most especially, become more fluid and taste the joys of freedom. The Charioteer is nothing if not self-sufficient.
Be prepared and self-contained for the changes that will sweep in and carry you with them.
For the week of August 14, I chose the Ace of Pentacles reversed!
The Ace of Pentacles typically indicates a new opportunity associated with money, career, or physical things. It might be a new business opportunity, a new job, or a new investment opportunity.
Given this card is reversed this week, you may want to keep this new opportunity under wraps, especially if it is in the very early stages of development. You might have just had the idea to start a new business, or you might be in early negotiations for a new job. It doesn’t feel like the right time just yet to go shouting it from the rooftops (just in case it doesn’t come to fruition).
And, given we’ve just started Mercury Retrograde, it is very possible that you might change your mind about the opportunity in the next few weeks. So, take it easy, okay?
Ask the Tarot: What new opportunity is presenting itself to me?
