The Sky This Week for June 3 to June 5

Friday, June 3

• The Moon reaches perigee, the closest point in its orbit around Earth, at 6:55 a.m. EDT. It then lies 224,402 miles (361,140 kilometers) away from us.

Saturday, June 4

• Another comet in the growing crowd of such objects discovered by the Pan-STARRS telescope in Hawaii makes its appearance in June’s morning sky. Comet PANSTARRS (C/2013 X1) currently glows around 7th magnitude in southern Aquarius. As a bonus today, the comet’s head lies less than 1° east of the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) while the comet’s tail grazes this bright planetary. From most of the United States, you’ll need a haze-free southeastern horizon to spot the comet through a telescope shortly before dawn breaks.

• New Moon occurs at 11:00 p.m. EDT. At its new phase, the Moon crosses the sky with the Sun and so remains hidden in our star’s glare.

Sunday, June 5

• Mercury reaches greatest elongation today, when it lies 24° west of the Sun and stands 6° high in the east a half-hour before sunrise. The innermost planet shines at magnitude 0.5 and shows up easily through binoculars if you have an unobstructed horizon. When viewed through a telescope, Mercury appears 8″ across and about one-third lit.

Goddess Grant Your Children Protection

fantasy
Goddess, Give us protection from the outside world,
Let whatever people say about us not hurt,
Let whatever we fear not bother us,
Let all the mixed up feelings inside be released without harm,
Goddess, you see our pain,
We are your children, we are your soul,
We need a dream to cast away this pain,
Something to soothe our soul,
Give us protection from the outside world.
In Your Divine Name, we ask these things.

Understanding new moon

High Priestess Raven Spirit Walker's avatarEnchanted Circle of Witches®

On the day of new moon, the moon rises when the sun rises. It sets when the sun sets. It crosses the sky with the sun during the day.

The image above is imaginary. It’s as if you flew in a spaceship to a place where you could see the night side of the moon. Why do we say imaginary? Because, when the moon is new, its night face is facing us on Earth … and we can’t see the moon at this time.

We can’t see the new moon from Earth, except during the stirring moments of a solar eclipse. Then the moon passes in front of the sun, and the night portion of the moon becomes visible to us, surrounded by the sun’s fiery corona.

General facts on Moon and its relationship with the Earth

Moon (lat. Luna) is the Earth’s closest celestial body. Moon revolves around the Earth in elliptic orbit and it takes 27,3 days to do one revolution around Earth (this is called sidereal rotation period). However, as the Earth revolves around the Sun, Moon takes 29,5 days to return to the same spot (synodic rotation period), if we look at his rotation from the aspect Earth-Moon-Sun.

It is widely known today that the tides occur because of gravitational forces, which are located between the Earth, the Moon and the Sun at their relative movement through space. The Moon revolves around the Earth, and because of its attraction of the Earth, attractive force appears between them influencing the Earth. All but huge masses of water on the Earth (71% of Earth’s surface is covered with water), is not flexible enough…

Connection between Woman and the Moon

High Priestess Raven Spirit Walker's avatarEnchanted Circle of Witches®

A man by the name of Alexander Marshack, in the 1960’s found a piece of bone near the headwaters of the Nile. The bone was close to 30,000 years old. But its age however, was not the most interesting feature. What made this bone particularly unusual is that it had at periodic intervals, notches carved into it as if to mark a sequence of time. He later found many other such markings on bones, antlers, stones and goddess figures, in Czechoslovakia, Russia, Spain and Italy.

After studying these numerous finds, Marshack was convinced that the lines were not made all at once as if to somehow decorate the object, but were made at different times as one would find with any crude calendar. His theory is that these objects were the first attempts at keeping a record of time, and that these markings were actually indications of lunar cycles.
