Celebrating Legends, Folklore and Spirituality 365 Days a Year for May 15th

Festival of Maia, Vesta, and Mercury

Today was sacred to the ancient Roman Goddess Maia, Goddess of Spring, and the wife of Vulcan. She was connected with fertility and the growth of all living things. Over time, she became confused with the Greek Goddess of the same name, who was the mother of Hermes, and the equivalent of the Roman Mercury.

On this day in ancient Rome, the Vestal Virgins (priestesses of Vesta) performed special ceremonies to regulate the water supply for the coming Summer. The rites were considered ered critical to the survival of Rome and the propagation of its crops. Additionally, this was the day when Roman citizens paid tribute to Mercury, the God of commerce and the marketplace. This was a prominent day of celebration, because Mercury’s help was considered crucial to maintaining the growing foreign trade that the Empire enjoyed and depended on.

WOTC Extra: Faeries Believe in Them Or Not?

The Witches Circle
Faeries

Are there really any such things as faeries? Many Witches believe in them whole-heartedly. Others are convinced that they don’t exist except in stories told to children. So are there indeed faeries at the bottom of your garden?

To be honest, I tend to lean toward the dubious group on this one…or at least I doubt faeries look or at least I doubt that faeries look or act much like our ideas of them. On the other hand, there are a whole lot of things that I didn’t think were real until I found the witchy life many years agao, so I try to keep an open mind.

Let’s face it—there are many more things that we don’t know for certain about this fabulous universe that we live in than those we do.

So let’s just assume for a moment that the “yes, Virginia, there really are faeries” bunch are right–now what?

Well, for one thing, it is a good idea to play nice with the little people. After all, you can’t see them, and they can see you. And if they are around, they have been with us for a very long time. And they were probably there before us.

So why not put out the occasional treat for them, and plant a few extra pretty flowers in the garden with them in mind. Whenever my group gets together for a ritual outside, we always leave the last few “cakes” from our cakes and ale for the faeries…just because.

And maybe when you plant your seeds down there at the bottom of your garden, it might not be a bad idea to ask the faeries for a little boost. Who know, you might just get it!

Daily Witchcraft for Sunday – Solar pocket talisman

GOTH
Daily Witchcraft for Sunday

Solar pocket talisman

Here is a Witch craft that ensures that you carry a pocket full of sunshine at all times. Use this talisman to remind yourself that the sun’s power and energy is always with you. This will encourage your outlook on life to be sunny, and it can help keep any of your solar-themed spells going strong and yourself magickally motivated.

• Yellow- or orange-colored oven-bake clay such as Sculpey or Fimo
• A pinch of ground cinnamon
• A nail to inscribe the clay with
• A baking sheet
• Your oven

To begin, knead the orange or yellow clay to make it more flexible. As you do, add a pinch of the cinnamon (a solar herb) to the clay, and work it into the material. Next, flatten and shape out a small circle. Go for the size of a large coin-sized disc, about 1/4 of an inch or 6 mm thick. Now take the nail and gently inscribe a sun on one side of the talisman. Flip over to the back and inscribe the names of Helios and Sunna on the other side.

You can make this talisman depiction of the sun as simple or as elaborate as your artistic ability allows. Place the disc on the baking sheet, and bake the clay following the manufacturer’s directions-typically at r3o degrees; the length of time is approximately mately fifteen minutes, though it depends on how big your disc is. This is an estimate only, so read the directions on the oven-bake clay for further guidance.

When the talisman is done baking, allow it to cool. Then consecrate the talisman, and you’ll be ready to go! Here is a charm that will bless your new solar talisman. You can certainly add a solar-colored spell candle or crystals to this spell if you wish. Take a look at the correspondences and see what you would like to add to the spell to make it more personal. Once the talisman is finished, hold it up to the sunlight and repeat the consecration charm:

In Helios and Sunna’s name, this talisman I do bless
This pocket magick brings to me wealth, happiness, and success
I invoke the powers of the sun into this spell of mine
With harm to no one, this charm is done and sealed up with a rhyme.

Now clean up your craft supplies, tuck that talisman into your pocket, and enjoy the rest of your day.

Daily Magickal Application for Sunday, May 15th

Daily Magickal Application for Sunday, May 15th

The Latin term for Sunday, our first day of the week, is Dies Solis (“sun’s day”). In ancient Greek, it was called Hemera Heliou. In the Old English language, it was known as Sunnandaeg; in Middle English, Sonenday. All of these titles mean the same thing: the day of the sun.

What do you think of when you feel the sun shine down on you? What sorts of enchantments and energies do you think would be complementary to a day named after our closest star? Sunday brings those bright solar energies into your life and has the magickal correspondences of success, promotion, leadership, pride, light, generosity, warmth, fitness, and personal growth. Astrologically, the sun symbolizes the conscious self and rules the zodiac sign of Leo.

The charms and spells that would complement this magickal day of the sun are ones for personal achievements of any kind-such as if you are seeking fame and wealth, working for that much-deserved promotion at work, or being acknowledged for a job well done. Health issues, increasing personal power, or simply sticking to your diet and being proud of what you have accomplished all fall under the sun’s golden influence.
