Hildegard of Bingen
Hildegard of Bingen, Abbess of Rupertsberg (1098 – 1179), was known as the “Sibyl of the Rhine.” The 10th child of noble parents, Hildegard joined a monastery at age 8 and took the veil seven years later. A visionary from childhood, she wrote three mystical works, together with saints’ lives and work on natural history and medicine but is more famous for her poetry and musical works. Honored in many German churches, Hildegard was never canonized even though many miracles have bee reported from her tomb.
