Seasons of the Witch – Legends and Lore, Ancient Holidays
And Some Not So Ancient!
Today Is …
Chinese and Japanese: Festival of the Heavenly Weaver-Girl
Chih Nu, Chinese Festival of the Milky Way. Lay out under the stars tonight and feel yourself a part of the spinning galaxy. In China, the annual Feast of the Milky Way (Chih Nu) takes place each year on this day to celebrate the romantic encounter between Vega the Weaver Maid and Aquila the Herd Boy.
In Japan, the Tanabata (Star Festival) takes place annually on this day and celebrates the reunion of the two celestial lovers who bridged a raging river with their own bodies.
Roman: Feast of Juno
July 3-August 15. This was recognized by the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Arabians and Polynesians. The Dog Days of Summer takes it’s name from the rising of the Dog Star, Sirius. The ancient words which we translate as “the Dog Star” could also be interpreted as “the little bitch bringing heat.” This is the hottest period in the Northern hemisphere of Earth.
