Daily Crystal: Arsenopyrite
Arsenopyrite and Fluorite
Description: Unusual and attractive mixed mineral small cabinet specimen of arsenopyrite and clear fluorite on a base matrix of quartz. The arsenopyrite is in two sections separated by the larger of the several fluorite crystals. The large fluorite crystal is 18 x 14 mm. The overall specimen is 65 x 30 x 40 mm. Arsenopyrite is a widespread mineral at the Yaogangxian mine. This specimen is a good illustration of how arsenopyrite is found with such minerals as quartz and fluorite. It is also commonly found, as a matter of interest, with minerals such as muscovite and calcite. Excellent example of the types of specimens being recovered from this famous mine.

Caristia/Cara Cognatio -From the Roman word, cara, meaning dear, this was a day of family reunions after the solemnity of the Parentalia. Now that the ancestors had been honored, the living were acknowledged with feast and gifts. It was ruled by Concordia, the goddess of peace, depicted with a cornucopia in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
“Sweet it is, no doubt, to recall our thoughts to the living after they have dwelt upon the grave and on the dear ones departed from us; sweet, too, after so many departed, to look upon those of our blood who are left, and to count kin with them,” wrote Ovid about this festival.
Concordia – The Roman festival of Charista, Caristia, or Cara Cognatio (from the word cara “dear” kinsfolk) is a feast of favor and good will in honor of the goddess Concordia. Disputes between family and friends are settled today and presents were given with the intent of reconciling friends and relations. Near relations come to honor the familial deities, the Lares, with offerings of incense and food. This holiday also serves to strengthen family bonds. After so many days of honoring the dead, the celebrants rejoice in the living.

Church of St Peter – To replace the pagan festivals of the Concordia, the Church made this day the feast of St Peter’s Chair, celebrating his role as teacher and feeder of that flock of sheep, the faithful. However in 567, at the second Council of Tours, people were still “offering mashed food to the dead.” Many early blooming plants are named after Peter including the cowslip in England which may be called Peterwort, and daffodils in Wales which are called Peter’s leeks.
There are also many legends about ice on St Peter’s Day. The Germans say that if water is frozen on this day it will not melt for a fortnight. The Norwegians extend this to 60 days. The Norwegians also say that St Peter threw hot rocks at the ice to melt it, or that if there is no ice on this day, he will make it (see also St Matthias Feb 24). It is also believed that the weather on this day will last four weeks, or forty days, or all of spring. However, if there is sun enough to saddle a horse, or moisture on a roof sufficient to slake a hen’s thirst, then there will be a good harvest.

Moon Water
Full moon water is a preferred ingredient in many potions because it is charged with the natural powers of the moon. You can make full moon water by placing tap or spring water outside (in a sealed, clear container) with the full moon shining down upon it. You can reserve this specially charged water for washing your tools, herbs, or other ingredients, or you can use it in the potions themselves. For example, I use full moon water in my tea to give it extra power. Full moon water is best used in potions designed to aid in perfecting ideas, working on positive aspects, increasing psychic and physical energy, and enhancing creativity.
New moon water is ideal for potions relating to healing and resting. It is made in the same way as full moon water, but instead of a full moon, you let the light of a new moon shine on it.
If you have the collecting and storing capacity, you can save rainwater for your cleansing and potion needs. Before using collected rainwater, thou, you might want to have it tested to make sure is hasn’t picked up any kind of contaminants.
