Runic divination, “runecasting”, is not “fortune telling”. Runecasting works deeply with the subconscious. The rune pouch with its runic symbols represents the entire universe. As one poses a question, one’s entire conscious and unconscious mind is focused toward that question, so that the runelots selected are not truly random selections, but rather choices made by the subconscious.

Runecraft operates on an ancient form of psychology. Even back in Viking times, there was a remarkable understanding of the human psyche. They recognized cause and effect, and the interconnectedness of all things. The word to describe this interconnectedness was “wyrd”, which was eventually perverted into the modern meaning of “weird”. It did not originally mean something unusual or strange. Rather, it referred to the far-reaching effects of that which one does. The concept of “fate” was also not as we know it now. Instead of a helpless predestination, “fate” meant a destiny created by one’s earlier actions. Wyrd was pictured as a web, like that of a spider. The symbology is excellent. When the spider steps onto a thread (a path) the vibrations affect the entire web and that which is contained within the web, just as our actions affect our immediate world and those around us, and the actions of others affect our lives.

When one does a runic reading, one usually addresses a particular issue, and examines the past, the present and the “future”, or rather “what will be if one follows the path one appears to be on”. The future is always perceived as mutable, changeable. The runic reading is done as an evaluation process, not as fortunetelling. One has an opportunity to look at what has occurred in the past (regarding the issue being questioned), what is occurring right now, and what direction one is headed.

A runecaster does not see the future. He/she examines cause and effect and points out a likely outcome.

Not exactly occult, is it? It’s not supernatural and it’s not very mysterious–although the uninitiated considered it a delving into mystery, much like a patient of a psychiatrist might. It’s certainly not magical or demonic. Instead it is a methodology for examining the path one is on and what the effects might be, by making use of one’s subconscious (i.e. an “intuitive perception”), unfettered by limited conscious belief systems.

Dowsing, or “divination” by bent stick or pendulum is similar. It is not supernatural. It is, again, a manifestation of one’s subconscious. All “intuitive perception” is such. Nothing magical about it, merely a means of awakening one’s right-brain.

Find a suitable place to do the reading. You do not want to be disturbed. Try to sit facing North if possible, the direction of the Gods in Norse mythology. Place a small white cloth on the surface in front of you. You work with the runes on this cloth. This cloth protects them from getting dirty and also forms the boundary for the casting.

Carefully form a question in your mind. Take your time doing this, as it is very important that you do not change the question midway through the reading. Once you have the question firmly fixed in your mind begin to gently mix the runes in their bag or container. Continue to mix the runes until you feel compelled to take up certain rune lots. (This is why it is important that the rune lots be of the same shape and size: so that you can’t identify each rune by shape.)

Continue to stir and select lots until you have the correct number of runes in front of you for the layout you will be using. Keep track of the order in which the runes were pulled, laying them in their proper position in the layout as you pull them. You can use any Tarot layout, or one of the methods described below.

Runes are oracles, and oracles are often obscure. Each rune can mean many different things. It is up to the runecaster to decide how these meanings apply to the question at hand. You may get even deeper interpretations through your own “gut” reactions to the rune’s definition. However, don’t delude yourself in thinking that you have a completely different understanding of the cast than indicated by the traditional interpretations. Stick to the recognized interpretations, but learn to expand on their meanings through insight and meditation.

Here is one way I do a rune casting. I reach into my rune bag, stir them around a bit and pick up a bunch. I “cast” them onto a white cloth, and see how the symbols land. Some will be face down and I ignore them. If a rune is upright, it has a certain meaning. If a rune is upside down, it has a different meaning. The combination of the visible runes affects the interpretation. Sometimes the runes “sing” to me and the answer to the question is instantly clear. Here are the three non-structured castings I use most frequently. On another page I’ll describe some formal “layouts” to be used for runecasting.

The Norns are the Norse goddesses of fate. Urdh was the goddess of the past, or what has been. Verdhandi is the goddess of the present, what is. Skuld is the goddess of the future, or what shall be. Fate or wyrd was a very important factor in the psychology of the ancients.

A Norns cast is very simple, consisting of three runes, drawn one at a time from the rune pouch and laid in a row. If face down, flip them over as if turning the pages of a book. The first rune represents the past of the situation in question. The second indicates the present, the path that the querier is currently on. The third suggests the future, a likely outcome if one continues on the present path.

“This method will give a detailed overview of a person’s situation, providing insight into where they are in terms of their spiritual path, and clarifying the options and possible outcomes available to them. Nine is a magical number in Norse mythology. Pick nine runes at random from the pouch. Hold them between your hands for a moment, and focus on your question (if you have one). Then scatter the runes on the table, floor, or cloth if you have one. Read the runes which land face up first. These will relate to the current situation and the circumstances which led to it. How the runes are read is largely subjective, but in general, runes lying in the center are the most immediately relevant, while those lying around the edges are less important, or represent more general influences.

“Runes that are close together or even touching often compliment each other, or may even represent a single thing, while runes which fall on opposite sides of the pattern frequently represent opposing influences. Occasionally, a rune will land completely off the cloth or fall off the table. Some people consider such runes to be particularly significant, while others ignore them completely.

“Once you have looked at the runes which landed face up (and remembered which ones they are), turn over the rest of the runes without moving them from their positions. These represent outside or future influences, and will point to possible outcomes. It is up to you to decide what the various positions and patterns in a reading mean, but once you have come up with a few general rules, try to stick with them. As I have said before, consistency is very important. However, rune readings by their nature are very fluid, subjective things. Try not to impose too much order on your readings by inventing set meanings for every triangle, square and tetrahedron. Runes are like people – you never know how they will get along together until you introduce them. Look at the patterns and relationships that appear in each reading and see what interpretations make sense to you.” from Runic Journey by Jennifer Smith.

Rune-tines (such as twigs or popsicle sticks on which the rune symbols are inscribed) work best for casting on the ground. I use these simply by tossing all 24 onto the ground and read the runes which land upright, in the positions in which they land. Their relative positions give their relations. For example, if two upright runes are close or touching and lying nearly parallel, then the runes are related. If they cross, then they are in opposition. There are obviously many degrees of this, and you also have to consider groups of runes, and ones which are far away, and the general direction. This technique relies heavily on intuition, since it doesn’t have a spread to lay the runes in, like tarot would use. Between 4 and 8 runes generally land upright, which is about right for most inquiries.

Aries

While you may be itching to change your situation now, dear Aries, risky moves are not advisable at the moment. Have faith in your ability to better manage your life, but avoid the traps of thinking that’s too quick or cocky, which can put you in a state with blinders on. You might be odds with someone today over an issue of values or money owed, although it’s likely to be resolved (or put behind you) later today. These days, you do need to be careful about lending to others, or giving so much that you feel put upon. Today, there is a strong tendency to jump to conclusions or argument, when you’re far better off observing and using a wait-and-see approach. Tomorrow, this comes more easily to you.

Taurus

Stifling situations and activities that restrict can frustrate you more than usual today, dear Taurus. Your awareness quickens. Unresolved misunderstandings may be glaring now, but you might be uncertain about how to tackle them. Your feelings are straightforward, but your fears or worries may be up and down. Watch for band-aid solutions to problems that require more depth and energy. With Uranus in your sign these days, intuitive flashes are becoming a regular part of your daily life. Try to keep one foot on the ground, but do listen to your intuition. Making too-quick decisions today may not be the best idea, though. Distinguish between making changes for the sake of change, and making changes that will genuinely move you forward.

Gemini

Your thinking is otherworldly today, dear Gemini. You may even be receiving prophetic glimpses into your future through dreams or ideas picked up from the atmosphere around you. Profound inner changes are brewing, and today you may not know exactly what they are, but you feel that change is necessary. Actions today can be impulsive, however. If driven by a desire to rid yourself of certain unpleasant elements of the past, consider that a better solution may be to face the consequences of your past actions and to work on freeing yourself of guilt. There is no quick fix at the moment, even if you truly wish there to be one. Be honest with yourself. Note that mental stress could be interfering with your ability to think clearly and to take action confidently today. Impatience or insecurities can also interfere with your creative process now, although this should change radically towards the end of the day when strategy makes far more sense.

Cancer

Unusual and surprising energy is with you for social activities today, dear Cancer, with Uranus in your social sector connecting with Mercury in your communications sector. However, watch for some impatience with others, and perhaps also with your work or communications. Mixing friends and personal projects right now could be an adventure in risk. This is not the best of times to lend someone money or to make a commitment either, as all of the facts are not yet available or they’re under your nose, but you don’t see them! There is a certain impatience to the day that makes it all too easy to skip steps or jump to conclusions but keep in mind that neither of these things is advisable now. As the day advances, though, you begin to see the benefits of a wait-and-see approach.

Leo

Off the cuff remarks are more likely than usual today, and can cause quite a stir, dear Leo, but keeping things to yourself can be frustrating as well. Try to arrive at a compromise wherein you choose your words more carefully but express your discontent nonetheless. You are not inclined to enjoy feeling caged in, but neither are you happy with what feels like neglect when given the freedom to do your own thing. New insights into your career are coming now, and it’s important to listen not only to what your intuition is telling you but also to what seems to be coming from out of the blue – synchronicity and other chance events. Be careful when it comes to relationships with a partner, best friend, or business partner, as you may be too quick to jump to conclusions. As the day progresses, though, you’re more inclined to pace yourself, seeing the value of taking everything in before passing judgment.

Virgo

Disagreements or inner conflicts experienced today can stem from a sense that your desires are not exactly in tune with your higher ideals, dear Virgo. The way you view the world and how you experience the meaning of life is changing, and sometimes this can leave you feeling frustrated, or you can feel as if you’re spinning your wheels. The desire to explore the world beyond your usual daily routines is strong, but you may not yet have a plan of action to do so. Avoid jumping to conclusions. Changes in relationships in recent times seem to have been thrust upon you, as if you had no say in the matter. However, you might come to an enlightening realization now that the changes are something that you need to grow. Nevertheless, this is likely to be a mixed day, and it’s best not to push too hard particularly with a friend. Impatience should be tamed. You may see the changes that you’ve experienced with your work and daily routines in recent months in a new light today, dear Sagittarius. Avoid an abrupt, impatient, or defensive manner today as you deal with tensions and alterations. You don’t always do well with sudden changes of plans, but it’s best to roll along with them for now. Avoid making rash decisions today since the tendency to skip steps or ignore certain facts or precautions can lead to poor choices. However, as the day progresses today, your patience kicks in, and you’ll find tomorrow and the next exceptional for communicating, choosing, deciding, and observing. Aquarius

Changes in your domestic situation or your inner world may be more frequent in recent months with Uranus beginning its long-term transit of your solar fourth house, dear Aquarius. Or, you may feel a bit caged in and desirous of change. Feeling unsettled or insecure is possible today if you’re thrust into a situation in which you feel inexperienced. While this is generally a good time for looking forward and feeling positive about making changes, taking quick action may not have desirable outcomes today. The tendency to jump to conclusions or to make swift, unstudied choices is strong. Listen to your urges, but judge whether you may be temporarily blowing things out of proportion. The next couple of days are strong for having the patience and foresight to make good decisions.

Pisces

Generally, this is an important time for paying particular attention to ideas that seem to come out of the blue and unexpected communications, dear Pisces, with Uranus in your solar third house. Your intuition is working over-time now. However, there is a tendency for impatience today such that you skip steps or information, which can trip you up if you jump into something too soon. While emotional honesty is a beautiful thing, this is the case when it’s expressed maturely. If emotions are released in spurts, or if you are not representing yourself confidently, then your proclamations may bewilder others now. Take more time with your ideas — get them straight and choose tomorrow or the next to share.

We apologize for being closed to Monday, September 10. Lady of the Abyss’ son, Jacob, was four-wheeling with some of the boys around the neighbor while she was at the doctor. They were riding a trail that they have rode for years. While on this trail, Jacob’s four wheeler hit a fallen branch. The branch flipped the four wheeler and threw Jacob from the four-wheeler. He hit a tree and was knocked out. The guys he was with picked him up and carried him back to the cabin. Lady A was arriving home as she saw the guys bringing Jacob home. She immediately panicked and called 911. He was still out when the ambulance arrived. He was taken to the hospital. He had an cat scan ran on his brain. He has a concussion plus a broken arm. He arm had to have immediate surgery on it. It had a bone showing through. He came out of the surgery fine. He also woke up while in the ICU unit. The doctors said there was no damage or injury to his head and brain. His arm will be fine but it will be in a cast for several weeks. Jacob was extremely fortunate that he came out of this wreck with only a few injuries. After looking at the four-wheeler, it is astounding he did not suffer more grave injuries or even killed.

 

Lady A is upset and decided it would be best just to close the site for a few days till Jacob comes home. He is expected to be released in two or three days. They want to keep him for observance. I am sure you can understand why Lady A made this decision. She has more to worry about right now instead of the site. There is no insurance to cover any of Jacob’s ambulance, doctors and hospital bill. If you would like to help Lady A out on these expenses, we would greatly appreciate it. We ask that you keep Jacob and Lady A in your prayers at this time.
