Fall Dates Through the Zodiac

Fall into romance this season

As the leaves begin to turn and the weather gets colder, the impulse to stay in and hibernate gets stronger, which can spell boredom and relationship ruts. Fire up your romance with one of these fun fall activities for every zodiac sign, and you’ll have enough spark to keep your passion burning red hot all winter long!

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

The Ram isn’t a conventionally romantic sign — quiet nights in front of the fire and candlelit dinners bore Aries to tears. They need action and excitement, and when the adrenaline flows, so does the passion. This sign would dig the competitive, jubilant atmosphere of a football game. Just hope that their favorite team wins — the only thing an Aries hates worse than boredom is losing.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

When it comes to romance, the Bull likes to keep it traditional. A horseback ride through the country, with rolling hills and dazzling fall foliage, has enough old-fashioned romance to put them — and keep them — in the mood. Find a cozy country inn for dinner, and don’t skimp on the bill — this sign likes quality, and usually assumes that the more you pay, the more you get.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

Brainy Gemini is always interested in what’s happening on the political landscape, so a rally would fit the bill. Not only would it gives them the chance to quench their thirst for knowledge on the issues, it would give the two of you hours of discussion and debate afterward. If you can keep up your end of the conversation, you can steal your Gemini’s heart. Are you up for the challenge?

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Crabs spend a lot of time taking care of everyone around them, so their favorite dates are ones where they get to kick back and relax. Make your Cancer some hot cocoa, grab some blankets and cuddle up in front of a fireplace or an old romantic movie like Breakfast at Tiffany’s or An Affair to Remember. And don’t forget the marshmallows and whipped cream — the more decadent, the better for this sign.

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)

Lions like to be treated like the king (or queen) of the forest, so the more extravagant the plans, the more likely you’ll be to capture — and keep — this sign’s heart. Schedule a weekend getaway to a romantic bed and breakfast with all the amenities — breakfast in bed, Jacuzzi and a fireplace. You’ll need to eat at some point, so make sure you take them to the best, hippest restaurant in town for dinner.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)

Health-conscious and eco-friendly Virgos love farms, so a day of apple or pumpkin picking would give them the opportunity to get their hands dirty and become one with nature. Afterward, make an apple pie or pumpkin soup together, or let your Type-A personality date put their feet up and relax — something they rarely do normally — while you do all the work.

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)

Sophisticated Libras like the finer things in life, so take this refined sign for a vineyard tour. If you’re not well-versed in wine, you might want to pick up a copy of ‘Wine-Tasting for Dummies’ first. The more “hint of pepper” and “floral notes” you can dish out, the better. And make sure you dress to impress, as Libras are a sign that embodies all things stylish.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)

This sign loves mysteries and puzzles, so a trek through a corn maze would appeal to their inner investigator. Just make sure you have a post-maze activity lined up, as this sign will find their way out faster than any other. A drive to the area’s most notorious haunted houses would fit the bill — but make sure you establish some ground rules ahead of time, as Scorpios aren’t above breaking and entering to pursue a ghost.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)

Sagittarians are the adventurers of the zodiac, so a challenging hike to a peak they’ve never visited would put them in the mood for love. Just make sure you can keep up with the Archer — if you want to accompany them on their journeys, you have to prove you’re worthy. This sign has no qualms about traveling alone, so prove that you’re an able fellow wanderer.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)

Goats love to feel like they’re always accomplishing something, so to win this sign’s heart, plan a day of raking leaves. But beware going in that they won’t like the part where you jump in the pile at the end and ruin all your hard work. It’s your job to relax them with conversation — when they finally do ease up enough to make the leap, they’ll love the feeling of release. Just make sure to rake up the mess afterward.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)

When planning a date with an Aquarius, the quirkier, the better. They like to travel in packs, so a group tour like a ghost walk would keep their attention and appeal to their interest in the supernatural. They also spend a lot of time on humanitarian causes, so cleaning up a local park for the winter would give them a sense of purpose. Plus, they’d be impressed that you even suggested it.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20)

The most romantic sign of the zodiac, the Fish likes to connect on a spiritual level as well as on the emotional and physical plane. Take them to a weekend camping retreat that includes yoga, meditation or reflection. You’ll get an opportunity to enjoy the dazzling fall landscape together, as well as the chance to relate to each other in a deeper, more meaningful way.

Inspiration for the Week – Freedom from Negative Thoughts

Shanta Gabriel
a message from Shanta Gabriel

This message from Archangel Gabriel suggests a useful practice that allows us to create a time frame in which we cease judging ourselves.

The Gabriel Message Card for this Week

Give yourself a fast from negative thoughts about yourself.

This card always shows up at opportune moments when I notice I am being less than compassionate with myself. This attitude is a very old habit.

Over the years, it appeared as if I thought being relentless in my criticism about myself would somehow make me better. My ego must have wanted to ensure that I was doing “it all correctly.” This made me live in a very contracted state, and of course I attracted people that would step right in and add more judgments in case I relaxed my vigilance.

It was during the millennium shift when I received a brilliant gift from the Universe, disguised as the loss of everything I held dear. At that critical juncture, I realized that if ever I needed compassion, that was the time. I also started giving myself more permission to be authentic and live in my truth. I noticed that when I would back off from my critical mind, my heart would open, and I felt more love for all things — including myself. It was a new experience.

It is clear that if being very critical and hard on myself could create my enlightenment, it would have happened long ago. What my spirit needs is tenderness and support. It takes a different kind of vigilance to be aware of my habitual thoughts about myself and my world. My feelings let me know. When I’m hard on myself, I feel awful. There’s the first clue. I go out of my way now to be as kind to myself as I am with others. Usually, I am very kind to other people and give them the benefit of my love and compassion. This is what I need as well.

Sometimes I just put my hand on my heart when I notice my thinking has gone off the love track. (This is the Quick Coherence Technique from HeartMath.org.) That simple gesture brings me back into a loving place with myself and helps me attune to the One Heart within all beings. Just touching myself kindly in this way is also very soothing to my inner self, as well as my mammalian body.

Synchronicity was demonstrated beautifully after I wrote the above paragraph. I went to my email, and there from HeartMath was an article about the importance of self-love. When this happens, I love it. It helps me to know that I am in tune. Here is a portion of the article:

Self-love means being more compassionate, patient and accepting of ourselves. It means choosing to make self-care a priority. The idea of self-love might feel a bit awkward, but it is not selfish. It is necessary. As we get better at self-love, we feel more confident and understand that self-love and loving others is simply a reflection of our deepest essence.

A little child thrives when she is adored and encouraged. The same is true of our inner spirit. We need to be our greatest cheerleader and supporter in life. The steps we take to give ourselves the benefit of our love and reassurance will lift our vibrational frequency, making it safer and even easier to feel love about ourselves and the world.

It begins with our thoughts and our intention to stay in a loving, accepting place with ourselves, honoring the tender innocence within us. Often all it takes is the willingness to give to us the compassion and kindness that we truly deserve.

Know that you are totally lovable and worthy of all that is good. If that does not resonate with you, here is an easy three-step process to change your thinking:

1. Place your hand on your heart and breathe.
2. Now into your heart, on the in-breath, receive Love and Compassion from the Source of all Life, from the Angels, and most of all, from yourself.
3. Exhale, then check inside and notice how much better you feel.

Divine Presence,

May I always remember how much I deserve love. Help me to bring that love into my heart and use it to care for myself in new and empowering ways. May I be as patient with myself as I am with a kitten and take care of myself in the same way.

Inspire within me compassion and respect for all life and especially help me to be accepting and compassionate with me. May I remember that as I give more love to myself, the way opens so that all of humanity will have the ability to give themselves more love.

From that place of Love in our hearts, all of life benefits. And so it is.

The Gabriel Messages Book #39

Give yourself a fast from negative thoughts about yourself.

Dear One,

You are being asked to give yourself a fast from negative thoughts about who you think you are. Nothing wears down your sense of self more than this type of negative thinking. It is debilitating in every way. This is a good place to start in order to affect other areas of your life.

A fast is a period in which you refrain from some activity. Most people are familiar with a food fast, which allows the digestive system a period of recovery. The same is true for a mental fast. It gives your mind time to recover so you can begin to see the truth in your life without judgment.

The judgmental mind is relentless, constantly seeking out inadequacies to bring them to your awareness. Although shining light into the dark corners of your mind is beneficial, bombarding yourself with negative thoughts, even if you believe them to be true, serves no good purpose.

Practice:

So what can you do when incessant thoughts such as, “I should have done better,” “I’m not good enough,” and other negative impressions of your personal character that begin in your mind?

Go to God first. Ask to know the truth clearly within yourself. Call on the Angels to illuminate your mind with Love and Light. Ask for peace in your heart and then offer all your thoughts to the Divine Mind.

During your meditations and prayers, take time to visualize these as limiting thoughts you no longer need. Place them in a box and do something creative with them. Sink them to the bottom of the ocean. Send them to heaven in a colorful balloon. Explode them like a fireworks display or put them on a shelf somewhere in your mind’s attic. Find an image that works for you and purposefully send the negative thoughts out of your conscious mind.

It is a law of nature that empty spaces become quickly filled, so remember to fill your now empty mind with light. Light is love energy from the Source of all life. Light contains the seeds of truth that will stimulate loving thoughts. You can elaborate on this by imagining that your mind is a golden chalice being filled with God’s love.

Repeat this entire process as often as needed until you are no longer willing to tear yourself down and treat yourself unkindly. Instead, see yourself as you truly are — a beloved child of God; a spirit in human form; a clear vessel able to hold the highest possible level of truth; a beautiful, loving being shining Love into the world.

You can also turn these statements of truth into affirmations or statements of “I AM,” and they will become potent reminders, enabling you to strengthen you connection to your divine essence. There is great power in the words “I AM”. You can substitute these or similar affirmations whenever you notice your mind engaged in negative self-talk. Here are some examples:

I AM one with God. I AM peaceful and loving. I AM aligned with my Soul Purpose. I AM inspired with thoughts which serve my highest good. I AM relaxed and at peace. I AM enjoying an abundant lifestyle. I AM offering all my work to the Divine Presence and I AM fulfilled.

Have these or other phrases ready to quickly turn to, as soon as you notice negative thoughts creeping in. Don’t worry if you don’t believe your words at first. This is just the resistance of old habits of thought, and these habits can be changed.

Begin now to treat yourself with kindness and compassion. Remember that you are profoundly loved. Know that Angels embrace you in wings of pure light and see you as a beautiful, radiant spirit here to bring love to the world. This is who you really are, so please remember your guidance from Archangel Gabriel for today:

Give yourself a fast from negative thoughts about yourself.

I was lied

I just ran across another Tarot Deck they sent me. It has never been opened. You can tell how interested I am in Tarot Decks. But this one is The English Magic Tarot. It has a book and cards with it. I will put it on later tonight. Remember I hate housework and I hate dusting. Hell I am beginning to look like a hoarder. Next, I’ll be on the TV show, “Hoarders,” lol!

Love ya,

Lady A

Your Daily Love Tarot Card for November 9th is The High Priestess

Daily Love Tarot

The High Priestess

Love arrives today in the form of a mature and balanced partnership in which two people give as much as they get. They share their dreams. Be content if this is what you have. If a partnership is undergoing a rough patch at this time, balance comes in the form of compromise. It is easier to attain, and it works. This is especially true when we are slow to forgive and forget.

Is it true love?

I do mine clocks, that don’t reset themselves, before going to sleep Saturday night. So I don’t get to an appointment or a family thing way too early. LOL, I have done this in the past.

You got it wrong again. It’s spring ahead, fall back.

Spirit Message of the Day – Ideas to Connect With Your Ancestors

Samhain Rituals and Ceremonies

Looking for a ceremony or ritual to celebrate the Pagan sabbat of Samhain? Here’s where you’ll find a number of rituals, all of which can be adapted either for solitaries or a group. Samhain Ancestor Meditation: It’s Samhain, and that means for many Pagans and Wiccans it’s time to commune with the ancestors. Use this simple meditation technique to call upon those who walked before us — you may be surprised at some of the people you meet! Celebrate the Cycle of Life and Death Samhain is known as the witch’s new year. It is a time to think about the endless cycle of life, death, and rebirth. With this ritual, you can celebrate all three aspects either with a group or as a solitary.

A Time of Darkness
Samhain is known as the night when the veil between this world and the next is at its thinnest. It’s a time to sit back and honor the spirit world, and call upon those ancestors who came before us. After all, if not for them, we wouldn’t be here. We owe them something, some gratitude for their ability to survive, their strength, their spirit. Many Wiccans and Pagans choose Samhain as a time to honor their ancestors. If this is something you’d like to do, you can celebrate with a ritual or by hosting a seance or dumb supper in their honor.

In addition to these more formal rituals, you may also want to take some time alone for a quiet meditation. This is a point in the Wheel of the Year when the spirit world is a bit closer than normal, and if you’ve never tried to contact your ancestors before, now is a good time to do it.

How to Honor the Ancestors at Samhain
For many modern Pagans and Wiccans, there has been a resurgence of interest in our family histories. We want to know where we came from and whose blood runs through our veins. Although ancestor worship has traditionally been found more in Africa and Asia, many Pagans with European heritage are beginning to feel the call of their ancestry. This rite can be performed either by itself, or on the third night of Samhain, following the End of Harvest celebration and the Honoring of the Animals.

Here’s How:

  1. First, decorate your altar table — you may have already gotten it set up during the End of Harvest rite or for the Ritual for Animals. Decorate your altar with family photos and heirlooms. If you have a family tree chart, place that on there as well. Add postcards, flags, and other symbols of the country your ancestors came from. If you’re lucky enough to live near where your family members are buried, make a grave rubbing and add that as well. In this case, a cluttered altar is perfectly acceptable — after all, each of us is a blend of many different people and cultures.
  2. Have a meal standing by to eat with the ritual. Include lots of dark bread, apples, fall vegetables, and a jug of cider or wine. Set your dinner table, with a place for each family member, and one extra plate for the ancestors. You may want to bake some Soul Cakes.

If your family has household guardians, include statues or masks of them on your altar. Finally, if a relative has died this year, place a candle for them on the altar. Light candles for other relatives, and as you do so, say the person’s name aloud. It’s a good idea to use tealights for this, particularly if you have a lot of relatives to honor.

  1. Once all the candles have been lit, the entire family should circle the altar. The oldest adult present leads the ritual. Say:

This is the night when the gateway between
our world and the spirit world is thinnest.
Tonight is a night to call out those who came before us.
Tonight we honor our ancestors.
Spirits of our ancestors, we call to you,
and we welcome you to join us for this night.
We know you watch over us always,
protecting us and guiding us,
and tonight we thank you.
We invite you to join us and share our meal.

  1. The oldest family member then serves everyone else a helping of whatever dishes have been prepared, except for the wine or cider. A serving of each food goes on the ancestors’ plate before the other family members recieve it. During the meal, share stories of ancestors who are no longer among the living — this is the time to remember Grandpa’s war stories he told you as a child, tell about when Aunt Millie used salt instead of sugar in the cake, or reminisce about summers spent at the family homestead in the mountains.
  2. When everyone has finished eating, clear away all the dishes, except for the ancestors’ plate. Pour the cider or wine in a cup, and pass it around the circle (it should end at the ancestor’s place). As each person recieves the cup, they recite their genealogy, like so:

I am Susan, daughter of Joyce, the daughter of Malcolm, son of Jonathan…

and so forth. Feel free to add in place names if you like, but be sure to include at least one generation that is deceased. For younger family members, you may wish to have them only recite back to their grandparents, just because otherwise they can get confused.

  1. Go back as many generations as you can, or (in the case of people who have done a lot of genealogy research) as many as you can remember. You may be able to trace your family back to William the Conqueror, but that doesn’t mean you have it memorized. After each person recites their ancestry, they drink from the cider cup and pass it to the next person.
  2. A quick note here — many people are adopted. If you are one them, you are fortunate enough to be able to choose whether you wish to honor your adoptive family, your biological family, or a combination of the two. If you don’t know the names of your birth parents or their ancestry, there’s nothing wrong with saying, “Daughter of a family unknown.” It’s entirely up to you. The spirits of your ancestors know who you are, even if you don’t know them yet.
  3. After the cup has made its way around the table, place it in front of the ancestors’ plate. This time, a younger person in the family takes over, saying:

This is the cup of remembrance.
We remember all of you.
You are dead but never forgotten,
and you live on within us.

Take some time to meditate on the value of family, how fortunate we are to be able to know the connections of kin and clan, and the value of heritage. If your family has a tradition of music or folktales, share those as a way to wrap up the ritual. Otherwise, allow the candles to burn out on their own. Leave the plate and cup on the altar overnight.

Tips:

  1. If you didn’t do a separate ritual for animals, you can add photos and candles for deceased pets to your family altar.
  2. If you like, you may wish to follow this ritual with a Seance.

What You Need:

  • Items to represent your family members
  • A meal to eat
  • A cup of cider or wine to drink
  • Candles

A Feast with the Dead – Speaking to the Dead
Although traditionally a seance is a good way to communicate with those who have crossed into the spirit world, it’s also perfectly fine to talk to them at other times. You may find yourself walking into a room and suddenly reminded of someone you’ve lost, or catching a whiff of a familiar scent. For me personally, every February I find myself picking over birthday cards and thinking to myself how funny my grandfather would find this one or that one. I make a point of telling him about them, even though he died in 2002. You don’t need a fancy or formal ritual to speak to the dead. They hear you.

How Do We Know They’re Listening?
In some spiritual paths, one may be viewed as crazy — or at the very least, a little bit daffy — if they speak to the dead. But think of the people you know who have lost a spouse, particularly one they were married to for a long time. Many of them will tell you they talk to their deceased loved one. We can ask them for assistance, for companionship, or just for them to hear our words. Chances are good that if you ask, your life will change significantly.

What Can We Say to Them?
Ask anyone who’s lost a loved one, and there’s a good chance they have something they didn’t get to say. Whether it’s “I love you”, “I forgive you,” or just plain old, “I really miss you,” there’s nearly always something we wanted to say but never got around to. When you talk to the dead, share with them the things in your life that are important. Maybe you need to let Grandma know that you’re finally going to have that baby girl she’d been hoping for. Or perhaps you need to tell Cousin Joe you’re sorry you broke his iPod. Whatever it is, if it’s on your mind say it. Only then will you be able to move on.

An Altar to the Ancestors
In many cultures, ancestor worship is an ancient practice. Although traditionally found more in African and Asian societies, more and more Pagans of European heritage are beginning to embrace this idea. After all, we all want to know where we came from. You can build an altar to honor your ancestors, featuring photos, heirlooms, and even a family tree sheet. Leave it up all year long, or set it out at Samhain. This is a good time to perform a ritual for Honoring the Ancestors.

Why on Samhain?
Why hold a Dumb Supper on Samhain? Well, it’s traditionally known as the night when the veil between our world and the spirit world is at its most fragile. It’s the night when we know for sure the dead will hear us speak, and maybe even speak back. It’s a time of death and resurrection, of new beginnings and fond farewells.

Menus and Table Settings
Your menu choices are up to you, but because it’s Samhain, you may wish to make the traditional Soul Cakes, as well as serving dishes with apples, late fall vegetables, and game if available. Set the table with a black cloth, black plates and cutlery, black napkins. Use candles as your only source of light — black if you can get them. Realistically, not everyone has black dishware sitting around. In many traditions, it’s perfectly acceptable to use a combination of black and white, although black should be the predominant color.

Host/Hostess Duties
When you’re hosting a Dumb Supper, clearly the point is that no one can speak — and that makes a host’s job very tricky. It means you have the responsibility of anticipating each guest’s needs without them communicating verbally. Depending on the size of your table, you may want to make sure each end has its own salt, pepper, butter, etc. Also, watch your guests to see if anyone needs a drink refill, an extra fork to replace the one they just dropped, or more napkins.

The Dumb Supper
In some Pagan and Wiccan traditions, it has become popular to hold a Dumb Supper in honor of the dead. In this case, the word “dumb” refers to being silent. The origins of this tradition have been fairly well debated — some claim it goes back to ancient cultures, others believe it’s a relatively new idea. Regardless, it’s one that’s observed by many people around the world.

When holding a Dumb Supper, there are a few simple guidelines to follow. First of all, make your dining area sacred, either by casting a circle, smudging, or some other method. Turn off phones and televisions, eliminating outside distractions. Secondly, remember that this is a solemn and silent occasion, not a carnival. It’s a time of silence, as the name reminds us. You may wish to leave younger children out of this ceremony. Ask each adult guest to bring a note to the dinner. The note’s contents will be kept private, and should contain what they wish to say to their deceased friends or relatives.

Set a place at the table for each guest, and reserve the head of the table for the place of the Spirits. Although it’s nice to have a place setting for each individual you wish to honor, sometimes it’s just not feasible. Instead, use a tealight candle at the Spirit setting to represent each of the deceased. Shroud the Spirit chair in black or white cloth. No one may speak from the time they enter the dining room. As each guest enters the room, they should take a moment to stop at the Spirit chair and offer a silent prayer to the dead. Once everyone is seated, join hands and take a moment to silently bless the meal. The host or hostess, who should be seated directly across from the Spirit chair, serves the meal to guests in order of age, from the oldest to youngest. No one should eat until all guests — including Spirit — are served.

When everyone has finished eating, each guest should get out the note to the dead that they brought. Go to the head of the table where Spirit sits, and find the candle for your deceased loved one. Focus on the note, and then burn it in the candle’s flame (you may wish to have a plate or small cauldron on hand to catch burning bits of paper) and then return to their seat. When everyone has had their turn, join hands once again and offer a silent prayer to the dead. Everyone leaves the room in silence. Stop at the Spirit chair on your way out the door, and say goodbye one more time.

Samhain Ancestor Meditation – Calling Upon the Ancient Ones
When performing an ancestor meditation, people experience different things. You may find yourself meeting a specific person that you are aware of in your family history — maybe you’ve heard the stories about great-uncle Joe who went out west after the Civil War, and now you have the privilege of chatting with him, or perhaps you’ll meet the grandmother who passed away when you were a child. Some people, however, meet their ancestors as archetypes. In other words, it may not be a specific individual you meet, but rather a symbol — instead of adventurous great-uncle Joe, it may be a non-specific Civil War soldier or frontiersman. Either way, understand that meeting these individuals is a gift. Pay attention to what they say and do — it may be that they’re trying to give you a message.

Setting the Mood
Before you perform this meditation, it’s not a bad idea to spend some time with the tangible, physical aspects of your family. Bring out the old photo albums, read through wild Aunt Tillie’s diary from the Great Depression, get out your grandfather’s old pocket watch that almost sank with the Titanic. These are the material things that connect us to our family. They link us, magically and spiritually. Spend time with them, absorbing their energies and thinking of the things they’ve seen, the places they’ve been.

You can perform this ritual anywhere, but if you can do it outside at night it’s even more powerful. Decorate your altar (or if you’re outside, use a flat stone or tree stump) with the symbols of your ancestors — the photos, journals, war medals, watches, jewelry, etc. No candles are necessary for this meditation, but if you’d like to light one, do so. You may also want to burn some Samhain spirit incense.

Claiming Your Birthright
Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Think about who you are, and what you are made of, and know that everything within you is the sum of all your ancestors. From thousands of years ago, generations of people have come together over the centuries to create the person you are now. Think about your own strengths — and weaknesses — and remember that they came from somewhere. This is a time to honor the ancestors who formed you.

Recite your genealogy — aloud if you like — as far back as you can go. As you say each name, describe the person and their life. An example might go something like this:

I am the daughter of James, who fought in Vietnam
and returned to tell the tale.
James was the son of Eldon and Maggie,
who met on the battlefields of France,
as she nursed him back to health.
Eldon was the son of Alice, who sailed
aboard Titanic and survived.
Alice was the daughter of Patrick and Molly,
who farmed the soil of Ireland, who
raised horses and tatted lace to feed the children…
and so forth.

Go back as far as you like, elaborating in as much detail as you choose. Once you can go back no further, end with “those whose blood runs in me, whose names I do not yet know”. If you happened to meet a certain ancestor, or their archetype, during your meditation, take a moment to thank them for stopping by. Take note of any information they may have given you — even if it doesn’t make sense just now, it may later on when you give it some more thought. Think about all the people you come from, whose genes are part of you. Some were great people — some, not so much, but the point is, they all belong to you. They all have helped shape and create you. Appreciate them for what they were, with no expectations or apologies, and know that they are watching over you.

How To Celebrate the Cycle of Life and Death
Samhain is a time like no other, in that we can watch as the earth literally dies for the season. Leaves fall from the trees, the crops have gone brown, and the land once more becomes a desolate place. However, at Samhain, when we take the time to remember the dead, we can take time to contemplate this endless cycle of life, death, and eventual rebirth.

Here’s How:

  1. For this ritual, you’ll want to decorate your altar with symbols of life and death. You’ll want to have on hand a white candle and a black one, as well as black, red, and white ribbon in equal lengths (one set for each participant). Finally, you’ll need a few sprigs of rosemary.

Perform this rite outside if at all possible. If you normally cast a circle, do so now.

  1. Say:

Samhain is here, and it is a time of transitions.
The winter approaches, and the summer dies.
This is the time of the Dark Mother,
a time of death and of dying.
This is the night of our ancestors
and of the Ancient Ones.

Place the rosemary on the altar. If you are doing this as a group ceremony, pass it around the circle before placing on the altar. Say:

Rosemary is for remembrance,
and tonight we remember those who have
lived and died before us,
those who have crossed through the veil,
those who are no longer with us.
We will remember.

  1. Turn to the north, and say:

The north is a place of cold,
and the earth is silent and dark.
Spirits of the earth, we welcome you,
knowing you will envelope us in death.

Turn to face the east, and say:

The east is a land of new beginnings,
the place where breath begins.
Spirits of air, we call upon you,
knowing you will be with us as we depart life.

  1. Face south, saying:

The south is a land of sunlight and fire,
and your flames guide us through the cycles of life.
Spirits of fire, we welcome you,
knowing you will transform us in death.

Finally, turn to face the west, and say:

The west is a place of underground rivers,
and the sea is a never-ending, rolling tide.
Spirits of water, we welcome you,
knowing you will carry us
through the ebbs and flows of our life.

  1. Light the black candle, saying:

The Wheel of the Year turns once more,
and we cycle into darkness.

Next, light the white candle, and say:

At the end of that darkness comes light.
And when it arrives, we will celebrate once more.

  1. Each person takes a set of ribbons — one white, one black, and one red. Say:

White for life, black for death,
red for rebirth.
We bind these strands together
remembering those we have lost.

Each person should then braid or knot their three ribbons together. As you do so, focus on the memories of those you have lost in your life.

  1. While everyone is braiding or knotting, say:

Please join me in chanting as you work your energy and love into your cords:

As the corn will come from grain,
All that dies will rise again.
As the seeds grow from the earth,
We celebrate life, death and rebirth.

When everyone has finished braiding and chanting, take a moment to meditate on the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Is there someone you know who reminds you of a person you’ve lost? Have you ever looked into a baby’s eyes and seen your late grandfather looking back?

  1. Finally, ask everyone to take their knotted ribbons home with them and place them on their personal altar if they have one. That way, they can be reminded of their loved ones each time they pass by.

Tips:

  1. Rosemary is used in this rite because although it seems to go dormant over the winter, if you keep it in a pot you’ll get new growth in the spring. If there’s another plant you’d rather use, feel free.

What You Need:

  • Ribbon in black, red and white
  • A white candle and a black one
  • Rosemary

In my opinion these are the type of witches that can send witchcraft and the portrayal of witches back decades. Again I urge you all to read Lady Abyss’ posts about it.

The Ordains – Concerning the relationship within the Craft

THE ORDAINS

Concerning the relationship within the Craft

Witches do not point out the identity of other witches to the general public or give addresses, or anything that can betray any of us.

Do nothing that will endanger anyone in the Craft, or which will bring them into conflict with the law of the land or any of your persecutors.

Do not gossip or speak evil of other witches.

Never lie to any of the Wicca.

Never use your magickal skills for show, pride, vanity or glory.

Keep within your Book of Shadows a record of your own rites and learnings.

Do not lend your Book of Shadows to anyone. You may allow someone to copy it though.

Property owned by Crafters should be guarded both mundanely and spiritually by the Witch.

Never use your personal power for evil purposes or attacks. If someone attacks you, you can defend yourself by asking the Goddess for justice.

Magickal bindings can cost you dearly. Learn to banish negativity instead.

Know that thoughts are things; and what you create in thought may manifest in reality.

A Witch’s power grows in direct relation with his or her level of wisdom.

As long as you are acting in accordance with a positive belief system, don’t worry what others think of you and say about it.

Injuries, accidents, sickness, and poverty are often manifestations of low self-esteem or negative programming, not hexes.

Magick use should be viewed as sacred.

Witches may teach others about the Craft if the place is safe, the teacher is knowledgeable, the student is willing, and the information is available publicly or is not secret to the organization to which he or she belongs.

Never do anything to disgrace the Goddess and the Craft.

I realized before I decided to write this post that I will probably get some nasty comments because of my views and wording but that is fine with me as everyone has the right to voice their opinion. All I ask is you do it in a respectful manner without using foul language. Thank you.

On a day in the USA where most people are thrilled to have a day off of work to celebrate Christopher Colombus “discovering” America I feel it is important to remind everyone that he was not the first to discover this land. The first people to set foot on this land BCE are the real discovers of the USA, Central, and South America. Today we refer to these people in the USA as NAtive Americans to be “politically correct.” I know first hand that most would rather be referred to as American Indians. I feel…

Elder’s Meditation of the Day – October 6

Elder’s Meditation of the Day – October 6

“We are responsible for the condition of the Earth. We are the ones who are responsible and we can change that. If we wake up, it is possible to change the energy. It is possible to change everything.”

–Hunbatz Men, MAYAN

The environment we want outside will be created by the mental pictures we have inside out heads. We must have the right environmental picture as well as the right values. These values will give the mental picture its true meaning. If we respected Mother Earth, we would not throw garbage on Her, nor would we put poison in Her. We would not misuse Her in any way. Mother Earth is like She is today because of the mental pictures of previous generations as well as the mental pictures of our own generation. If we want the environment to change, each individual must change their mental picture. “As within, so without.”

Great Spirit, today, let me be alert to Your guiding voice.

Runecasting Divination

RUNECASTING - DIVINATION

“Divination – regardless of the tools – works because in the system one is using the individual card/hexagram/rune etc. represent the whole in some unified way. At the moment of ‘random’ mixing, because of intent, the cards order themselves to mirror the reality of the querier.”

1. Runecasting Techniques

Runic divination, “runecasting”, is not “fortune telling”. Runecasting works deeply with the subconscious. The rune pouch with its runic symbols represents the entire universe. As one poses a question, one’s entire conscious and unconscious mind is focused toward that question, so that the runelots selected are not truly random selections, but rather choices made by the subconscious.

Runecraft operates on an ancient form of psychology. Even back in Viking times, there was a remarkable understanding of the human psyche. They recognized cause and effect, and the interconnectedness of all things. The word to describe this interconnectedness was “wyrd”, which was eventually perverted into the modern meaning of “weird”. It did not originally mean something unusual or strange. Rather, it referred to the far-reaching effects of that which one does. The concept of “fate” was also not as we know it now. Instead of a helpless predestination, “fate” meant a destiny created by one’s earlier actions. Wyrd was pictured as a web, like that of a spider. The symbology is excellent. When the spider steps onto a thread (a path) the vibrations affect the entire web and that which is contained within the web, just as our actions affect our immediate world and those around us, and the actions of others affect our lives.

When one does a runic reading, one usually addresses a particular issue, and examines the past, the present and the “future”, or rather “what will be if one follows the path one appears to be on”. The future is always perceived as mutable, changeable. The runic reading is done as an evaluation process, not as fortunetelling. One has an opportunity to look at what has occurred in the past (regarding the issue being questioned), what is occurring right now, and what direction one is headed.

A runecaster does not see the future. He/she examines cause and effect and points out a likely outcome.

Not exactly occult, is it? It’s not supernatural and it’s not very mysterious–although the uninitiated considered it a delving into mystery, much like a patient of a psychiatrist might. It’s certainly not magical or demonic. Instead it is a methodology for examining the path one is on and what the effects might be, by making use of one’s subconscious (i.e. an “intuitive perception”), unfettered by limited conscious belief systems.

Dowsing, or “divination” by bent stick or pendulum is similar. It is not supernatural. It is, again, a manifestation of one’s subconscious. All “intuitive perception” is such. Nothing magical about it, merely a means of awakening one’s right-brain.

2. How to do a Runecasting

Find a suitable place to do the reading. You do not want to be disturbed. Try to sit facing North if possible, the direction of the Gods in Norse mythology. Place a small white cloth on the surface in front of you. You work with the runes on this cloth. This cloth protects them from getting dirty and also forms the boundary for the casting.

Carefully form a question in your mind. Take your time doing this, as it is very important that you do not change the question midway through the reading. Once you have the question firmly fixed in your mind begin to gently mix the runes in their bag or container. Continue to mix the runes until you feel compelled to take up certain rune lots. (This is why it is important that the rune lots be of the same shape and size: so that you can’t identify each rune by shape.)

Continue to stir and select lots until you have the correct number of runes in front of you for the layout you will be using. Keep track of the order in which the runes were pulled, laying them in their proper position in the layout as you pull them. You can use any Tarot layout, or one of the methods described below.

Runes are oracles, and oracles are often obscure. Each rune can mean many different things. It is up to the runecaster to decide how these meanings apply to the question at hand. You may get even deeper interpretations through your own “gut” reactions to the rune’s definition. However, don’t delude yourself in thinking that you have a completely different understanding of the cast than indicated by the traditional interpretations. Stick to the recognized interpretations, but learn to expand on their meanings through insight and meditation.

3. Simple Castings

Here is one way I do a rune casting. I reach into my rune bag, stir them around a bit and pick up a bunch. I “cast” them onto a white cloth, and see how the symbols land. Some will be face down and I ignore them. If a rune is upright, it has a certain meaning. If a rune is upside down, it has a different meaning. The combination of the visible runes affects the interpretation. Sometimes the runes “sing” to me and the answer to the question is instantly clear. Here are the three non-structured castings I use most frequently. On another page I’ll describe some formal “layouts” to be used for runecasting.

4. Casting the Norns

The Norns are the Norse goddesses of fate. Urdh was the goddess of the past, or what has been. Verdhandi is the goddess of the present, what is. Skuld is the goddess of the future, or what shall be. Fate or wyrd was a very important factor in the psychology of the ancients.

A Norns cast is very simple, consisting of three runes, drawn one at a time from the rune pouch and laid in a row. If face down, flip them over as if turning the pages of a book. The first rune represents the past of the situation in question. The second indicates the present, the path that the querier is currently on. The third suggests the future, a likely outcome if one continues on the present path.

5. Nine-Runes Cast

“This method will give a detailed overview of a person’s situation, providing insight into where they are in terms of their spiritual path, and clarifying the options and possible outcomes available to them. Nine is a magical number in Norse mythology. Pick nine runes at random from the pouch. Hold them between your hands for a moment, and focus on your question (if you have one). Then scatter the runes on the table, floor, or cloth if you have one. Read the runes which land face up first. These will relate to the current situation and the circumstances which led to it. How the runes are read is largely subjective, but in general, runes lying in the center are the most immediately relevant, while those lying around the edges are less important, or represent more general influences.

“Runes that are close together or even touching often compliment each other, or may even represent a single thing, while runes which fall on opposite sides of the pattern frequently represent opposing influences. Occasionally, a rune will land completely off the cloth or fall off the table. Some people consider such runes to be particularly significant, while others ignore them completely.

“Once you have looked at the runes which landed face up (and remembered which ones they are), turn over the rest of the runes without moving them from their positions. These represent outside or future influences, and will point to possible outcomes. It is up to you to decide what the various positions and patterns in a reading mean, but once you have come up with a few general rules, try to stick with them. As I have said before, consistency is very important. However, rune readings by their nature are very fluid, subjective things. Try not to impose too much order on your readings by inventing set meanings for every triangle, square and tetrahedron. Runes are like people – you never know how they will get along together until you introduce them. Look at the patterns and relationships that appear in each reading and see what interpretations make sense to you.” from Runic Journey by Jennifer Smith.

6. Casting on the Ground

Rune-tines (such as twigs or popsicle sticks on which the rune symbols are inscribed) work best for casting on the ground. I use these simply by tossing all 24 onto the ground and read the runes which land upright, in the positions in which they land. Their relative positions give their relations. For example, if two upright runes are close or touching and lying nearly parallel, then the runes are related. If they cross, then they are in opposition. There are obviously many degrees of this, and you also have to consider groups of runes, and ones which are far away, and the general direction. This technique relies heavily on intuition, since it doesn’t have a spread to lay the runes in, like tarot would use. Between 4 and 8 runes generally land upright, which is about right for most inquiries.

Your Daily OM for September 14: Finding Your Own Paths

Finding Our Own Paths

BY MADISYN TAYLOR

Beginning our spiritual path is highly personal and we all enter a path that speaks to us, even if it is different than our neighbor.

Entering into our own spirituality is a private journey. Each of us will be drawn to a different gateway to begin on our personal path to awakening to a greater experience of ourselves. Even though we may be taught certain philosophies or beliefs as children, we still need to find our own way of understanding and applying them in our lives. For those who are raised without a spiritual framework, they may not even know their process as a form of spirituality. But at some stage in their lives, whether in youth or adulthood, they are likely to recognize the resonance of their beliefs, the ring of truth in their philosophy, and their dedication to their chosen purpose.

Our inner guidance will lead us, so that we will be drawn to the right doorway for us–a doorway that only we can recognize by the way it makes us feel inside. It could be a picture of an angel or the gift of a crystal. We may meet someone special who shares their experiences with us in a way that we find intriguing. While visiting the home of an admired friend, we may notice a book or statue of a diety, and ask why they chose those tools. Or a word or phrase may catch our attention in a song, or a lecture. For some they may find their way by walking through the experience of illness before they begin the search for what will help them to truly heal, while others may seek physical improvement and stumble across yoga or meditation–only to find that it leads them to an unexpected place beyond the body.

As we awaken to ourselves and to life, we will become more attuned to what is right for us. The universe speaks to all of us through infinite channels, but we each have our own frequency. Others may share what worked for them, but only we can decide what truly makes us feel inspired, awakened, connected, fully conscious, aware and alive. Whatever our path, it is perfect and is meant especially for us.

Spirit Message of the Day – How Are You Fulfilling Your Higher Calling

VOICE OF THE WIND
“When this card appears it addresses a higher calling. The card speaks of direction, inspiration, and guidance from forces outside of our worldly sphere of influence.”

TEACHING
“Traditionally the Voice of the Wind refers to being taught through spirit voices. This is something external, and is directed by a consciousness outside of us. To our ancestors this was the voice of the trees, rocks, mountains, lakes, and oceans. It was the whisperings of Nature spirits and beings of the Otherworld.”

ALIGNMENT
“You are making your way through the woods when you encounter a young couple. The woman is sitting on the earth and all about her the leaves swirl in a passing gust of wind. The trees sway and softly groan, as the woman smiles in response to the message of voices that whisper to her in the forest. In the background is her mate, who stands watch. You appear puzzled, and the man speaks to you, ‘She hears the voice of the wind, do not disturb her’. You strain to hear something yourself as the wind rushes past you, but the man informs you that you can only hear the voice when the spirits with you to understand them. They use the rustling of the leaves, and the sound of branches swaying, to convey their silent words.”

“You possess the ancestral voices within you, but they do not help you hear the voice of the wind. You realize that this comes from another race, and so you leave an offering of a coin from your pocket, and depart. As you go, the wind blows some leaves over the coin, and you hear the woman say, ‘It is well, they know your heart now. The whispers soon will come’.”

Today’s message is from A Traveler’s Guide to the Well Worn Path by Raven Grimassi and Stephanie Taylor with art by Mickie Mueller.
