I would ask that you please not stoke Eleanor’s fire and let’s get on with Today’s Posts

The Daily Cosmic Calendar for May 14th

Research projects and investigative work are empowered in the early hours—courtesy of a new grand triangle in earth signs formed by the moon in Virgo trine to Pluto in Capricorn (12:13 a.m.) and the sun in Taurus (12:31 a.m.). Romantic overtures receive the thumbs-up sign as Venus in Aries makes a supportive, 60-degree rapport with Mars in Gemini (6:59 a.m.).

A short void-of-course lunar cycle — beginning at 10:20 a.m. and ending at 11:52 a.m. when the moon enters airy Libra—puts the kibosh on pursuing any bold objectives during that 1 hour time-span. Once the moon is safely in Libra air space, focus your attention on exploring the fine or graphic arts while improving the quality of your primary partnerships.

Tarot Card of the Day for May 13 is Knight of Swords

Tarot Card of the Day

Knight of Swords

61

This card is traditionally entitled The Knight, but in some modern decks appears as The Prince. Traditionally, this card portrays the restless mind, aroused by thoughts of offense and defense, storming around searching for a target to pounce on. He often feels slighted, has a chip on his shoulder and bristles with a hostile attitude. His usual method is to look for someone to blame for his irritation.

Furthermore, in an attitude of righteousness, he may assign himself the job of correcting the offender. Jumping easily to conclusions, he shoots first, asks questions later and is therefore often guilty of overkill. This is not to say that he does not have his heroic side; a single-minded combativeness can have its value. However, even when he is doing the right thing, he is likely to be doing it for the wrong reasons. Apt advice for this card is to deeply question your motives for what you are thinking about doing. Forethought will assist you in discriminating between righteous and unrighteous causes. Control any traces of impulsive judgement!

Occasionally you will notice in the detail on the card, that the person can be a woman rather than the expected man. There is some evidence that the tradition of knighthood included a certain number of “anonymous knights” who took mythic names and veiled their true identities. Living on the road with few or no servants, they served as freelance defenders of travelers, champions of the little people against the exploitation of both highway robbers and the wealthy classes. Odds are that some of these knights-errant were camouflaged women, and that idea is preserved with the traditional representation of the Sword Knight.

Your Weekly Tarot Horoscope: Week of May 13

Read what’s in the cards for your zodiac sign this week!

Welcome to the week of May 13! Each week a card will be pulled for your zodiac sign, offering the guidance and insight needed to maximize your opportunities and avoid any obstacles headed your way. Reveal the message the Tarot has for YOU now!

Aries Tarot Horoscope

Your card for the week: 9 of Cups

Receiving the 9 of Cups could signal that this is the week when your stars will finally begin to align. When this card appears in a reading, it is a signal from the universe that everything in your life is as it should be. This dose of fortunate energy could mean feeling perfectly content in your job, your relationship, your friendships — your emotional cup could truly runneth over! Take the time to stop and appreciate the abundance of blessings life is offering you right now.

Taurus Tarot Horoscope

Your card for the week: Queen of Cups

The Queen of Cups indicates emotional maturity, compassion, and a nurturing spirit. This week you are being called to express this energy in some way. Perhaps a friend approaches you with relationship troubles, or it could be that a colleague is coming to you for support with a problem they’re facing. When this happens, listen from the heart as they speak but remain emotionally separated from the issue. While it may be tempting to dive head-first into the situation with them, understand that only they can work themselves out of their predicament.

Gemini Tarot Horoscope

Your card for the week: Page of Cups

Keep an open heart and an open mind this week! The Page of Cups is urging you to go back to the time in your life when you were more childlike, more fearless, more idealistic. It could be that past or recent circumstances have made you more cynical and closed off as a way to shield yourself from getting hurt. While this approach can certainly help you avoid more pain, it may also prevent you from experiencing life’s pleasures. Don’t let your past dictate your future in this way. Learn to trust again.

Cancer Tarot Horoscope

Your card for the week: 2 of Swords

The 2 of Swords indicates you could be experiencing a bout of indecision at this time. In fact, you may be so unsure of how to proceed that you’ve actively been putting off facing this matter. This week you’re being reminded that no matter how much you try to avoid this situation, it won’t simply go away. Instead of focusing on the consequences of making the wrong decision, consider what might happen if you don’t make a decision at all. Inaction can often lead to greater issues down the road.

Leo Tarot Horoscope

Your card for the week: 6 of Swords

This could be the week you finally release something that has been hanging over you for far too long. The 6 of Swords serves as a reminder that, although it may be difficult, sometimes we have no choice but to move on from a challenging situation. What have you been holding onto that has prevented you from creating a brighter future for yourself? Now is the time to let this go once and for all. This won’t be an easy task, but ultimately, it is the right thing to do.

Virgo Tarot Horoscope

Your card for the week: The Star

You can breathe a little bit easier, because relief has arrived this week! The Star is signaling a reprieve after a period of great change or difficulty. While this turmoil has not been easy for you to go through, you have been able to endure whatever challenges life has thrown your way. What lessons have you learned? What were you able to let go of that was holding you back? How will you move forward differently? Now is the time to shed the old you, so you can emerge as the person you were meant to be.

Libra Tarot Horoscope

Your card for the week: Knight of Swords

There may be no stopping you this week … but is that a good thing? The Knight of Swords is a card cautioning against ambition at all costs. Yes, it’s good to have dogged ambition, but only when you’ve considered all the challenges and consequences first. Before making your move, examine all the variables. What will you gain? What could you lose? Will you be neglecting those around you in pursuit of your goals? Understanding the fine line between determination and obsession could prevent you from potential headaches down the road.

Scorpio Tarot Horoscope

Your card for the week: The Hierophant

You could find yourself committed to a new cause this week! The Hierophant is a card that represents belief systems, traditions, and institutions. You may have been feeling lost, aimless, and in need of direction. If you’ve been considering joining a new group, now is the time! Being surrounded by people of a similar mindset could offer you the type of community and support you’ve been missing. So, go ahead and attend a book club, volunteer to work at a soup kitchen, or join other outdoor enthusiasts on a hike. You might just find what you’ve been missing.

Sagittarius Tarot Horoscope

Your card for the week: Judgment

You could be on the verge of a decision that will have a long-lasting impact! You’ve been at this crossroads for a while, unsure of which path to go down. The Judgment card knows the best choices comes from the perfect blending of head and heart. This means you should not only look to your past for tangible lessons you’ve learned, but you must also connect with your inner self and listen to what your intuition is trying to tell you. This is the week to make your decision — and you already have everything you need to do so.

Capricorn Tarot Horoscope

Your card for the week: Ace of Wands

If you’ve been waiting for a sign from the universe about something, this is it! The Ace of Wands represents a new beginning and all the potential that comes with this new venture. This week you are being encouraged to pursue that new path or project you’ve felt passionately about but haven’t acted on yet. Use this time to take your first steps toward manifesting this goal. There’s no need to make huge leaps forward — even a small step forward is still a step toward your goal.

Aquarius Tarot Horoscope

Your card for the week: Ace of Pentacles

The Ace of Pentacles is signaling that an abundance of new opportunities in your material world are emerging for you this week. Have you been feeling stalled in your career? Has an investment not paid off the way you thought it would? Have you been unable to make money from an idea you had? That could all change now! Keep your eyes and ears peeled as a new beginning in any of these areas could be just around the corner. Whether you decide to take advantage of them is up to you, but they will be there for the taking.

Pisces Tarot Horoscope

Your card for the week: Wheel of Fortune

The Wheel of Fortune reminds you this week that life is full of ups and down. If you’ve been going through a problematic time in your life, this card could signal an end to this difficult period. If you’ve been going through a prosperous period, things could soon return to normal. Don’t lament this change — it is a natural part of growth and a natural part of life. Every experience you have serves a purpose in your understanding of yourself and your situations. Let this card serve as a reminder to embrace the ebb and flow of life.

Are you a secret psychic?

How to develop your intuitive powers

by Jane Lyle

From The Astrology Room

Psychic abilities, or what’s sometimes called your ‘sixth sense’, are part of each and every one of us. Of course, they are much stronger or more refined and developed in some people than others, which is why these gifts of nature can seem so mysterious and out of reach.

That’s why some people make great psychic readers, because they have developed their natural abilities, abilities that usually became obvious during childhood.  Yet intuition is just another way of knowing or sensing things. And you can develop and enhance your intuition in simple ways, just by paying it some quality attention, and giving it some tender, loving care.

Hearing your own inner voice is a real gift, for it can help you with knotty problems and difficult decisions. Many people refer to ‘gut feelings’, another way of describing our intuitive senses, senses that are always with us. We use phrases like ‘I feel it in my bones’ or ‘it doesn’t smell right’. Such feelings and stray thoughts are easy to ignore, rationalise, or even reject. And if you struggle against your intuition, it can mislead you by getting all tangled up with stress reactions, obsessive worrying, and the biggest threat of all, fear.

There are numerous workshops and courses designed to teach you how to develop different specialist psychic abilities such as mediumship, clairvoyance, or sensing auras.  But all of these skills need a firm foundation in your everyday life. And that foundation is built, like any other, with focus, intention, and practice.

So if you’d like to give your own psychic abilities a chance to bloom, here are some things you can try:

–    Learn how to relax. Panic, worry, and stress can block your intuition completely. Just learning how to breathe slowly and deeply is a wonderful beginning. Sit quietly in a chair (if you lie down you might doze off!) and take a moment to feel your whole body, feel the ground beneath your feet, drop your shoulders and unclench your jaw. Switch off the phone as well. Then take a deep breath, pause for a couple of counts (one, two…), and exhale. This little exercise is a great way to start any kind of reading, whether you’re visiting a psychic or learning how to read tarot. Just follow your breath, in and out, and allow thoughts to drift across your mind without grabbing onto them and becoming distracted. Basically, this is a form of meditation. Try to do it every day. Fifteen minutes is ideal.

–    Keep a dream diary for a month or two – longer if you wish. When you wake up, scribble down your impressions of your dreams. At first, these will probably seem puzzling, confused, or almost non-existent. But even a colour or a kind of emotional mood can be a clue. So, if you just felt sad in a dream, write that down even if you don’t have any more details. Bit by bit, your dreaming mind will begin to open up and give you much more detail.  By tuning into your dreams, you are tuning in to your own subconscious mind. Since mostly we don’t pay this much attention, we have little idea what it is trying to tell us. Once you connect with it, it will grow clearer and stronger.  Your dreams will grow clearer and stronger too. And your subconscious mind will have an easier time getting hold of you! Working with your dreams will also help you if you want to learn how to visualise things on the inner screen of your mind.

–    Clearing away some physical clutter or unloved, unwanted possessions really does help to free up your mind, your imagination, emotions, and your precious intuition.  Your attention and energy is all bound up with your surroundings, and your ‘stuff’.  Ancient magical teachings and rituals all over the world contain ceremonies designed to clear and purify a space before attempting to do psychic work. Native American Indians, for example, burn sage and cedar to clear negative energies, followed by sweet grass which invites uplifting energies into the newly-cleansed space. In the East, they use incense in a similar way. Many sacred space ceremonies involve chanting, bells, Tibetan singing bowls or music too. You can read about these, or attend courses and workshops if you want to discover more about the different traditions. At home, try clearing out just one drawer or cupboard to begin with. Or that dank and miserable corner of the garden, if you have one. You may find you can’t stop at just one small task. It becomes exhilarating. You’ll be able to see and feel how your intuition flows much more freely in a clear space. When things are clearer in your surroundings, bring something beautiful into them – candles and fresh flowers for example. A single rose and some tea lights can make a space feel special, enhance positive energies, and boost your spirituality.

–    Remember to notice and acknowledge your surroundings every day. Your five physical senses support your sixth, invisible sense. But how often do you take things for granted, or rush around never looking up at the sky? Really seeing a flower, a star, a sunset or the rain falling becomes a kind of meditation. What smells good? What tastes amazing? What flavours and scents awaken memories?  How about the texture of your towels, your sheets, a dog’s coat, a piece of velvet? What sounds can you hear? It is all about focus. And yet another simple way to enhance and strengthen your psychic side.

These tips and suggestions are simple, but powerful. They form the basis of a way of living that allows psychic or intuitive abilities to flourish and grow. Without them, it is much harder to develop your skills further, or learn how to use them effectively in your life.  Enjoy your journey

Daily Horoscopes for Monday, May 13

Moon Alert

We have the “all clear” today to shop and do business. The Moon is in Virgo.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Pluto is energizing the Sun in your sign, which makes this a powerful day for you, in many, many ways. However, I think the most important way that you are empowered today is that you can improve yourself. You can improve your image, your appearance, your style and your relationships. (Not too shabby.)

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Those of you who are doing any kind of research or trying to find answers or solutions to old questions will be successful today because the Force is with you. You will be able to delve deeply into what you are seeking or what you want to learn. Nothing will hold you back.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

You might attract someone today who is very powerful. (“Hi Darth.”) This person might even convince you to change your goals. Possibly, you are the powerful person who will influence others – friends or members of groups. If so, you want to influence them to improve their lives.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

You make a big impression on bosses, parents, teachers and VIPs today. They might even be in awe of you. You will be forceful and want to get things done, which is why you will exert your influence to make things happen. “Move that mountain!” “Build that bridge!”

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

If you feel passionately about something today, you will be convincing and persuasive when talking to others about politics, religion, racial issues, metaphysics, history, astronomy, astrology or any ideology to which you adhere. Obviously, this is a powerful day for teachers!

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Today you might learn information that you want to know regarding your partner’s wealth or the wealth or earnings of someone else. You might also delve into secrets regarding insurance issues, wills, inheritances or anything to do with shared property. “I have x-ray vision.”

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Your encounters with partners and close friends will be powerful and memorable today. In fact, you might attract someone to you who is impressive if not daunting. Nevertheless, your Libra charm will see you through because you value justice.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Look for ways to introduce reforms or make improvements to your job today because this is entirely possible. In fact, by extension, you might see ways to improve your health. You might even see ways to improve the health of your pet. Woof!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Romance will be sizzling and sexy today – the stuff of movies! Likewise, sports events will be intense, aggressive and passionate in a competitive way. Whatever you do today will be edgy, and ideally, you will see ways to make things perform or run better.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You can make improvements at home today especially in areas related to laundry, plumbing, garbage, recycling and bathrooms. Meanwhile, a family discussion will be intense. Family members will agree that improvements are necessary. Look around you to see what really needs to be done. Tackle that first, especially if it involves tearing something down.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You are convincing and persuasive today – no question. However, you can also use your channeled mental focus to learn something new or discover hidden answers or new ways of doing something. Suddenly, you might see your daily environment with new eyes.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Because you are in a resourceful frame of mind today, you might see new uses for something that you already own. Could that lawnmower be a floor lamp? You might also see new ways to earn money or perhaps you will find a better paying job? Ka-ching!

If Your Birthday Is Today

Actor Iwan Rheon (1985) shares your birthday today. You are easy-going and patient. You are also determined, responsible and focused about getting whatever you want. This is a fun-loving year. Enjoy increased popularity and warm friendships. This year you will be more grateful for your life and will appreciate the happiness and beauty around you in a daily way. You will make an important choice — choose wisely.

MAKE WAY FOR SCORPIO’S FULL FLOWER MOON WITH THIS CLEARING RITUAL

JENNIFER BILLOCK

When the full moon enters Scorpio on May 18, you’re likely to be feeling a bit heavy. Whether it’s because you’re hanging onto some dead weight or because there’s something you want that you don’t have, you’re bound to feel it—and not just emotionally. The concentration of planets in Taurus alongside the flower moon will have us feeling that miasma physically, as well.

The best solution (aside from mindfulness and self-care) is to lean into the feeling and then try to be thankful for the good things in our lives. The creation of a curated smudge bundle embodies the power of Scorpio’s full flower moon through dried blooms, allowing you to harness the potent and energy, clear away unease, and enhance gratitude for what you already have.

MATERIALS
  • 100% cotton thread or twine
  • Fire-safe dish or an abalone shell
  • Lighter
INGREDIENTS (EXACT QUANTITIES ARE UP TO YOU)
  • White sage leaves (energetically clearing)
  • Marigold (spiritual cleansing)
  • Lavender stems (calming)
  • Rosebuds (self-love)
  • Aster (patience)
  • Carnations (gratitude)
INSTRUCTIONS
  • Arrange your plants in a pile in front of you, using as much of each as feels correct. Make sure the stems are all pointing down and the flowers are spread throughout. As you lay down each flower, take some time to smell it and appreciate the beauty of the plant.
  • Gather all the stems together and tie a tight knot around them with the twine. Twist the twine up and around the bundle in a spiral pattern, being sure to keep very tight tension—the plants will shrink as they dry out. When you reach the top, spiral back down and tie tightly again at the stems.
  • Hang your bundle in a dry place and allow it to dry out completely. This could take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks depending on weather and placement. For a quicker method, place on a baking rack and dry it in the oven at about 150 degrees 1.5–2 hours, checking regularly.
  • Once completely dry, begin your ritual. Hold your smudge bundle by the stem end and light the tip over a fire-safe dish until it’s smoldering.
  • Waft the smoke over yourself. As you do, imagine any negativity or irritation about your current situation drifting away with the smoke.
  • When you have sufficiently smudged yourself, waft the smoke around your living space—being sure to get into all the corners—while imaging negativity and irritation drifting away. As you move from space to space, express thankfulness for the things you have. Picture the area you’ve cleansed filling with a sense of gratitude.
  • Once you’ve smudged yourself and your space to your satisfaction, either let the bundle burn down in the fire-safe dish or stub it out. Bury the remains of the bundle and any ashes outside.

Happy full moon!

HERE’S WHAT SCORPIO’S FULL FLOWER MOON MEANS FOR YOU

RACHEL CELESTE HANSEN

At 2:11 p.m. PST on May 18, 2019, the full moon will be in Scorpio (27°39’).

Full moons have a way of stirring up our deepest emotions. But at the full moon in Scorpio, the feelings we express outwardly are just the tip of the iceberg. That’s because this fixed water sign needs to be in control—and that often means keeping messy, complicated emotions on lockdown. After all, Scorpio’s emotions are more intense than most, so it’s only natural to fear being overpowered by them.

WHAT DOES THIS FULL MOON IN SCORPIO MEAN?

Still, all that bottled-up energy has to go somewhere. And with a heavy concentration of planets in Taurus at this full moon, we’re most likely to feel it in our bodies. A sun/Mercury conjunction tunes us into messages from our five senses—so if we’ve repressed our true feelings about something, it may show up as physical discomfort or pain in order to get our attention. Fortunately, embodied experiences like yoga, massage, dancing, or sex can help us find release.

Indulging in creature comforts can also be good for the soul—as long as we keep material things in their proper perspective. If not, an exact Venus/Uranus conjunction (also in Taurus) could rock our world, forcing us to re prioritize. Our values and desires are undergoing a radical shift right now, so if we’re clinging to something we no longer want or need, it’s time to cut it loose. After all, Scorpio is only interested in the bare essentials. And with ruling planet Pluto conjunct Saturn in Capricorn (a long-term aspect perfecting in 2020), we’re challenged to cut away the dead weight in our lives so we can devote our limited time, energy, and resources to the things that really matter.

This could mean setting firmer boundaries—and having some tough conversations. Fortunately, a trine between Saturn/Pluto and sun/Mercury provides the confidence we need to stand our ground and embody our deepest truths. Still, with Mars (the other ruler of this lunation) now in super-sensitive Cancer, we’ll want to proceed with caution, as his square with Chiron can trigger fears of rejection, making us more likely to get defensive. Conflicts and confrontations can clear a path to healing, but only if we handle them with care.

With Neptune and the nodes in an exact aspect at this full moon, it’s easy to fool ourselves into believing that we’re above it all. But the truth is, most of us still have some unfinished business to take care of before we can truly transcend—and energetically, we’re supported in doing just that. Scorpio may try to hang on for dear life. But ultimately, it knows that life’s too short to stay stuck in the past. Rituals or symbolic actions taken now can help us forgive, express gratitude, and finally let go. At this “Flower Moon,” it’s time to start flowing and growing!

Read on for your sun sign (and rising, if you know it) to learn more about the energies of this full moon.

HOROSCOPES FOR THE MAY 2019 FULL MOON IN SCORPIO

SCORPIO

You’ve changed, Scorpio…but try explaining that to the people closest to you; they’re still trying to relate in the same old way, while inside you’re a totally different person. Don’t be too quick to cut ties, though, as there may still be a way to reconnect.

SAGITTARIUS

Dreaming of quitting your day job, Sag?  That might be premature—at least until you have a better sense of how to make it work. For now, clear some space in your schedule to rendezvous with your hidden talent or secret passion.

CAPRICORN

“Creative control” has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it, Capricorn?  But it’s not exactly what you think.  Having an original idea is a great start—but to bring it fully to life, you’ll eventually need to surrender and trust the creative process.

AQUARIUS

Keep the home fires burning, Aquarius—you’ll need them to sustain you physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as you navigate some profound inner shifts.  New insights are coming in right now about your true calling and path of service in the world.

PISCES

You’re a slippery one, Pisces. But when it’s so easy to get lost in your own stream of consciousness, it helps to have some kind of container.  Consider joining a supportive community or adopting a new philosophy or lifestyle that makes sense for you.

ARIES

You reap what you sow, Aries. And with all the blood, sweat, and tears you’ve put into your career recently, those investments are bound to start bearing fruit soon (if they haven’t already). Just remember to pay back your debts—even better, pay them forward!

TAURUS

What’s your obsession, Taurus? Our culture sends a lot of mixed-up messages about what we’re supposed to want in life—but only youknow what really turns you on. If something doesn’t resonate with your deepest desires, feel free to say “no thanks.”

GEMINI

More fuel for the fire, Gemini—when you’re working and living at this level of intensity, it takes a lot to keep your motor running! Still, this pace may not be sustainable forever. Temper your passion with pragmatism to avoid burning out.

CANCER

A promise is a promise, Cancer. And once you’ve committed yourself, there’s no backing out… even when it’s clearly time to move on.  But you’ve only got so much time and energy, so no one will blame you if you start spending it more selectively.

LEO

“Pride and joy,” Leo: If we had to guess, that’s how your family members think of you. You’ve impressed them enough already—so isn’t it time you started pursuing a more personally meaningful goal? Consider what legacy you want to build.

VIRGO

We believe in your vision, Virgo, and it’s clear that you do too. More than any other sign, you manage to be both an idealist and a realist. Now all you need is a well-crafted mission statement to attract more supporters to your cause.

LIBRA

This full moon is called the “Flower Moon…” and right now, Libra, everything’s coming up roses for you! But someone, somewhere, may be going without in order for you to enjoy the finer things in life. Remember to give thanks—and give back.

Daily Cosmic Calendar for May 13th

While a new grand triangle in earth signs takes effect—thanks to the moon in Virgo forming trines to Mercury in Taurus (7:49 a.m.) and Saturn in Capricorn (7:40 p.m.), potentially offering gains on the business front—Mercury making a tense, 45-degree tie to Mars (9:01 a.m.) and the sun linking up to Jupiter via an off-kilter, 150-degree aspect (11:29 a.m.) are more likely to create obstacles to forward progress.

The moon’s monthly opposition to Neptune (4:15 p.m.) and Pallas square Juno (10:46 p.m.) add to the shadowy vibes, while the moon parallel Venus (1:12 p.m.) and the sun trine to Pluto (8:08 p.m.) play encouraging roles. Find time to stock up on cereals, grains, veggies, fruit, tea, nuts, seeds, and seasonings.

Merry Meet Brothers & Sisters of the Craft on this Monday, May 13

star
We dedicate this poem to our Lady of the Abyss this morning…..

Amazing Grace
Amazing grace, how sweet the Earth
that bore a witch like me!
I once was burned, now I survive,
was hung and now I sing.

T’was grace that drew down the moon
and grace that raised the seas.
The magic in the people’s will
will set our Mother free.

We face the East and breathe the winds
that move across this earth.
From gentle breeze to hurricane
our breath will bring forth the change.

Turn towards the South and feel the fire
that burns in you and me.
The spirit’s flame will rise again
and burn eternally.

We greet the West, our souls awash
in tides of primal birth.
Our tears and blood, our pain and love
will cleanse and heal the earth.

Reach into the North and know your roots
down deep ancestral caves.
We find the wisdom of the Crone,
Of circles we are made.

Amazing earth, enduring life,
from death into rebirth.
T’is earth I am and earth I love
and earth I’ll always be.

Amazing grace, how sweet the Earth
that bore witches like we.
We once were burned, now we survive,
were hung and now we sing.

Goddess bless, so mote it be,
Our magic spirals on.
Merry meet and merry part
and merry meet again.

WHAT MAKES THE MOON FULL?

Since the time of our earliest ancestors, mankind has used the motions of the heavenly bodies to mark time and keep the seasons. The annual movement of the Sun being perhaps the most important as relating to seasons for harvest, planting, and the long dark nights of Winter. The Moon however has played no less a role to our time keeping efforts, and the word “month” is even derived from the word for Moon, with a month being the time period between one New Moon and the next.

What is a New Moon? From the standpoint of an observer on Earth, the moon goes through a very predictable periodic cycle. Each day, the moon appears to change shape! For a short time the moon is dark and cannot be seen, we call this “New Moon” and it is both the birth and death of the lunar cycle. Starting as a tiny sliver of light at first, it grows (waxes) daily as more and more of the moon becomes brighter until finally, the moon is fully lit and appears as a great round orb shining down. This is called Full Moon, and many cultures around the world have names for the Full Moons that occur throughout the year, such as Harvest Moon, or the Cold Moon. After the Moon is full, it begins to wane each day as the bright round moon is reduced again to a tiny sliver of light and finally to disappear to begin the cycle all over again.

What physically causes what we observe in the sky with our own eyes? Consider the pattern of the lunar phases in relation to the Sun. As the moon moves further from the Sun in our sky, it grows more and more full. As the moon moves closer to our Sun, it wanes and darkens. We’ve known since at least the ancient Greeks what was going on here. The moon is round, like a giant ball and it revolves around the earth. Sunlight from the Sun is what is lighting up the Moon. Vampires beware, moonlight is nothing more than reflected sunlight! New Moon when the moon is dark occurs when the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun, and we see the dark side of the moon (that’s right, the dark side is not the far side, it’s just the side opposite from the Sun). As the Moon slides away from the Sun in our sky, we see the thin crescent, the edges of the great ball that is the moon being illuminated by sunlight hitting it from the edges. The moon waxes through the gibbous phases until the moon is on the other side of the earth, directly opposite from the Sun. As it moves in its orbit there is a moment in time when the Moon is directly opposite the Sun and is fully illuminated from our point of view on earth. This moment is Full Moon.

Now, the Moon continues around and approaches the Sun from the other side, and begins to wane in brightness as less and less of the Moon from our vantage point receives light from the Sun. The gibbous and crescent phases decline from the opposite side of the Moon from where they were growing as we approached New Moon because now, like on a merry-go-round, the Moon approaches the Sun from the opposite side from which it left. The Moon’s orbit, or path around the Earth is not fixed, but wobbles as well. Sometimes the Full Moon will pass directly into the shadow of the Earth and we observe this as a Lunar Eclipse. Everyone on Earth who can see the Moon can see a Lunar Eclipse when it occurs because the Moon is physically in the shadow of the Earth and not receiving any light. A Solar Eclipse on the other hand can only occur during New Moon and this happens on occasion when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun on its orbit. The Moon is small, and so the shadow from the Moon cannot cover the entire Earth and instead creates a shadow that races across the globe at supersonic speeds as the Moon passes by.

Astronomers can calculate the exact times of the New and Full Moon to great accuracy, and you can find these times in most almanacs. The orbit of the Moon as well as our path around the Sun are quite well understood. It takes the moon about 27.32 days to completely orbit the Earth, yet the Lunar Cycle is about 29.53 days long. Why the difference? Because both the Earth and Moon are also traveling around the Sun and the extra time for the lunar cycle is “catch up” time for the Moon to get into the same relative position to the Sun as we move around in our great circle.

Both New and Full Moon are very specific instances of time when the Moon is at a specific location in its orbit around the Earth. This moment in time doesn’t care what time zone anyone on Earth is located in either! Astronomers use a standard called Universal Coordinated Time, which is the time at Greenwich England. Everyone else on earth is in a time zone that is some offset from this coordinated time. On the East Coast of the United States for example, the time zone is 5 hours earlier (or 4 hours during Daylight Savings Time) than it is in Greenwich while people living in California are another 3 hours displaced for their local time. This makes civil life make more sense as sunset is “about” 5 O’clock for everyone because the time zones flow all the way around the Earth, and this keeps the Sun ins “about” the same place for everyone during their same times of day. Have you ever seen a television show advertised to come on at 8pm Eastern, but 7pm Central? Time zones at work, the broadcast is at the same time for everyone, but their local time zones, or offsets from Greenwich are different. This is why New Moon might be at 1am for someone on the East coast, but at 10pm the previous day for someone on the West coast. It’s the same moment in time, but because of civil time zones (and our round Earth), our local clocks are different.

A SPELL FOR HECATE’S WISDOM

Madre wicca

This is a spell which uses an incantation to Hecate, the goddess of the Crossroads. She therefore can assist in the making of important decisions, which is why she is approached in this instance.

Her sacred day is Friday, so that would be the best day to perform this spell.

YOU WILL NEED

INCENSE SPECIFIC TO HECATE MADE UP OF:

  • 3 parts sandalwood
  • 2 parts cypress
  • 1 part spearmint

SMALL BOWL CONTAINING HONEY

METHOD

  • Light your incense.
  • Contemplate your decision. If necessary write down all the options.
  • Stand with your arms in the Goddess position (arms crossed) to acknowledge the presence.

Read the incantation below aloud and let the energy of it flow through you.

All powerful Hecate,

goddess of victory

Bestower of good fortune

and infinite wealth

Hear my prayer, that I send

through this sweet smelling smoke

Wise Watcher of the crossroads

and the forking alleyways

Of sailors, and travellers

and all journeying folk Hear me now as I too

Humbly make my approach.

Raise the bowl of honey and say:

Accept this offering of fresh clear honey

As sweet and as pure

as your fine beauty Bestow divine light

Bring me clarity

Hear my prayer now

As I choose which road.

Put the honey bowl down.

Raise your arms again in acknowledgement of Hecate.

Lower your arms.

Sit down quietly knowing that the answer will come to you and you will know which decision to make.

You may not receive an answer immediately, but rest assured that one will come. Hecate has become known as one of the Goddesses who works at night, so you may find you receive an answer through dreams.

Invocation To The Queen Of The Witches

Hecate
Goddess of the cross-roads,
Goddess of Manic-Depression,
Dweller in the deep places of the earth and mind,
Traveller in the land between worlds!
Torch-bearer! Protectress of the very old and the very young;
Protectress of those used and abused;
Healer of those who are torn apart;
She will be there for us when we call on her and at the end.
Grandmother to lost children and to the downtrodden.
Nurse to the suckling infant,
Comfort to the lone man or woman in the darkest night.
She who seeks vengeance for her children who are wronged!
Wanderer and prowler!
Sorceress who lives at the edge of the mind.
Drawer-up of the secret compost from the unused internal well.
She who has no relatives on the earth save for her children.
Without Mother or Sister.
Lady on the brink, both bi-polar and uni-polar!
They call her mad, and it is she who terrifies the disbeliever and the
unworthy!
Bringer of nightmares!
But she it is who sooths the sleepless and disheveled spirit.
Mother of night!
Dark Power of the moon!
Keeper of the shadow!
Walker of the endless highways!
She unites those who follow her as her children; the Hekite.
Bearer of the sacred poppy.
Shape-shifter, Transformer.
Keeper of the hounds of Hel and the three-headed dog Cerebus!
She walks abroad in the hour of the wolf and under the Dark Moon!
Hear my call O Lady and cover us with your starry cloak.
Let the unborn moon seed in my heart this night.
And let her growing light shine upon our intention;
That she be at our full deliverance,
So Mote it be!
