Spell for Extra Protection

book

SPELL FOR EXTRA PROTECTION

The following spell may be performed at any time you feel the need for extra protection. First of all, gather together the following:
• 1 white candle

• Implement for inscribing a candle

• Protection oil (such as Lotus, Dragon’s Blood, Frankincense, Sandalwood, or Rose Geranium)

• Lighter

• Candle holder

• 4 obsidian arrowheads (obsidian, onyx, or apache tears stones may be substituted if you do not have the arrowheads).

• Also, gather together any ritual items you feel necessary.
Next, cast your circle. In the center of your circle, facing North, take the obsidian arrowheads (or stones) into your hand. Charge them with protective powers and place them around the candle holder, one in the North, one in the East, one in the South, and one in the West. Next, take the candle and inscribe a pentagram on it (which is among other things a symbol for protection), along with your name, or the name of the person you wish protection for. Now anoint the candle with your oil, while concentrating strongly on your need for protection. Know that you are divinely protected, a child of the Goddess and God. See and feel yourself being completely safe and secure, protected in your home, car, workplace, etc. Continue to charge your candle and visualize until you feel the candle literally bursting with energy. Now set the candle in the candle holder and light it. You may wish to continue the visualization, or use whatever techniques you wish to send the energy out from you. When you are ready, close the circle and allow the candle to burn down completely. It is finished. So Mote it Be!!!

101 Essential Oil Uses – Spa and Relaxation

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years in various cultures for medicinal and health purposes. Essential oil uses range from aromatherapy, household cleaning products, personal beauty care, and natural medicine treatments.

The particles in essential oils come from distilling or extracting the different parts of plants, including the flowers, leaves, bark, roots, resin and peels. In ancient times, Jews and Egyptians made essential oils by soaking the plants in oil and then filtering the oil through a linen bag.

Essential oil benefits come from their antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. These healing oils are rapidly growing in popularity because they act as natural medicine without any side effects. Ready to harness the power of the world’s most proven therapeutic compounds? In this list, Dr. Axe talks about 101 ways to use these amazing essential oils.

Summer Invocation

Summer Invocation

by Trish Telesco

Fireflies and summer sun
in circles round
we become as one.

Singing songs at magick’s hour
we bring the winds
and timeless powers.

Turning inward, hand in hand
we dance the hearth
to heal the land.

Standing silent, beneath the sky
we catch the fire
from out God’s eye.

Swaying breathless, beside the sea
we call the Goddess
so mote it be!

(This can be used as a chant, part of a spiral dance, or to invoke quarters.)

Household Protectors Spell

Everyone has a protector, individual and family collective. If you think you don’t get help from yours, perhaps you need to give them a little more attention and praise. Use statues, bowls of stones, or other focal objects as a habitation for the family protectors.

This ritual is best during the waxing moon. Gather the following objects on your altar. Choose incense that reminds you of herbs, forests, and green growing things. Put a green candle in a holder and lay your wand beside it.

Decorate the immediate area around your symbol with pine cones, small statues of deer or other forest animals, ivy, holly, or something similar. Clean the guardian symbol so it hasn’t any dust or dirt on it. If the symbol is small enough set it on the altar or next to it.

Light the incense and candle. Stand before your altar and say:

Guardian spirits, I invite you to join me here at this altar.
You are my friends, ,and I wish to thank you.

Take the incense and circle the guardian symbol three times, moving clockwise.

I thank you for the atmosphere you help to keep clean and pleasant in this home.

Move the candle clockwise around the symbol three times.

I thank you for the light you send to purify and dispel the darkness.

With the wand in your power hand, encircle the symbol three times clockwise.

I ask for your continued help and protection for me, my family, my pets, and my property. I ask that you drive away trouble-makers, thieves, and other, physical and non-physical, who are bent on evil disruptive purposes. I thank you for your friendship and love.

Stand with your arms raised and say:

Lovely Goddess, Lord of the Greenwood, I present to you the guardian of this house, the special spirit I have invited into my home. I honor this guardian in this symbol of its being. Bless this guardian. And to your blessings, I add my thanks for its protection and friendship.

If you have more than one guardian, change all the its to their and so on. Spend a few moments lovingly caressing the symbol, mentally expressing that the guardian is important to you. If you have provided food and drink, invite your guardian friends to party with you. Talk with them, being sensitive to feathery caresses and mental whispers. When you are finished, thank them for their presence at your ritual.

Immortal like Jellyfish

A bit more in depth on the research take on natural wellness than aromatherapy, here is something to consider for upcoming developments in healthcare as we delve into the mysteries of nature.

Could humans learn to live forever like jellyfish?

The search for the fountain of youth has been ongoing ever since man decided that dying wasn’t all that appealing. And now, it appears that this elusive holy grail of human immortality has been found, albeit by a species that is not ours! So who is the lucky winner of the everlasting life sweepstakes? None other than the humble and dime-sized jellyfish known as Turritopsis nutricula. This creature has accomplished what no other biological being on our planet has ever been known to do: reverse it’s aging to become young again after reaching full maturity! As early as 1992, scientists had observed this phenomenon in Turritopsis and research into its secrets was ongoing. However, a recent spike in the numbers and geographic distribution of this species has once again brought it to the attention of the greater scientific community because of the many important breakthroughs we have witnessed in stem cell research in the past decade. As regenerative medicine continues to grow into the future of medicine, it’s clear that this tiny jellyfish may hold the answers to not only addressing the many aging-related ailments we face, but also our own mortality.

Here is a short video about the many nifty traits of jellyfish species by Canada’s Animalogic.

In the picture below, you can see the typical life-cycle of a jellyfish. It starts out as a larva that eventually sinks to the bottom of the ocean and attaches to a sturdy substrate and continues development into a polyp that resembles a sea plant. The polyp then matures to become a free-floating medusa, what we commonly recognize as jellyfish resembling an upside down saucer with tentacles. Not much excitement so far, but Turritopsis has put an interesting twist to this process. It undergoes development much like what I’ve described above and what many of its relatives go through. However, during times of stress like a shortage of food, Turritopsis responds by beginning to reverse the process before eventually becoming a polyp again. From this point then, it can again develop into a sexually mature medusa when conditions become more favorable. Theoretically, it can repeat this process indefinitely as its cells undergo a process called transdifferentiation, a rare biological process whereby any non-stem cell can become a different cell entirely. It is still unclear whether only specific cells can only become other specific cells or if any cell in Turritopsishas the potential to become any other cell.

Ok, what Turritopsis does is admittedly cool, but why would we care? As you know, here at the Hub, one of our favorite topics are stem cells and all the promise they hold for regenerating tissue and treating a vast array of ailments. And while stem cells are one avenue to reach the goal of regenerating damaged or diseased tissues, transdifferentiation is another option that can get us to that goal.

Allow me to digress here and clarify the difference between these two systems (also see the below figure). Stem cells are cells that can differentiate into any type of cell. They can be isolated from a natural state i.e. embryonic stem cells (ESCs), or created by taking already differentiated cells and coaxing them to undifferentiate into stem cells, becoming induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). These stem cells can then differentiate into another type of cell. On the other hand, transdifferentiation doesn’t require the middle step of becoming a stem cell. Any differentiated cell can become any other differentiated cell, given of course that it receives the correct signals.

Much of the advances in stem cell technology have come from having an understanding of how stem cells naturally develop into different cell types. Thus, nature’s methods are teaching us how to manipulate stem cells and turn them into the desired cell type. And when it comes to transdifferentiation, the hope is that we will eventually be able to learn how creatures like Turritopsis skip the stem cell step and go directly from one cell type to another. As such, a recent breakthrough in using transdifferentiation for therapeutic purposes was reached in the laboratory of Dr. Deepak Srivastava of the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease at the University of California, San Francisco. In a recent article in the journal Cell, Dr. Srivastava’s group describes their success in getting architectural cells in the heart called fibroblasts to differentiate into cardiomyocyte-like cells. In case you’re rusty on your cardiac anatomy, cardiomyocytes are the cells in the heart that contract and result in it’s rhythmic beating. And as Dr. Srivastava explains in the video below, it is the loss of these cells and the development of scar tissue that is debilitating to those fortunate enough to survive a heart attack. So by just switching on three genes in the fibroblasts, the researchers were able to coax them to transdifferentiate into cardiomyocyte-like cells that looked and behaved like cardiomyocytes. Taking it one step further, they implanted these cells into the hearts of mice and found that they behaved just as one would expect them to.

See the interview with Dr. Srivastava here.

So while we still have some hurdles to overcome before this type of treatment is available widely for use in humans, it is indeed on its way. The amazing work being done in laboratories such as Dr. Srivastava’s are inching us closer to the day when perhaps we’ll be able to not only treat various ailments, but also to turn back the hands of time and reverse our aging like Turritopsis has been able to do. A recent press release by Advanced Cell Technology (ACT) hints at some potentially new technologies they are developing to take advantage of transdifferentiation. While most of their work thus far has focused on stem cell-based treatments, it’s encouraging to see companies like ACT put time and money into exploring transdifferentiation-based treatments as well. Sure everyone is working to get to the same goal, but as nature has shown there may be more than one way to get there!
