Celebrating Other Spirituality 365 Days A Year – Lemuria

May 9 – 13

Lemuria

In ancient Rome, May 9 through 11 was Lemuria. This was a time of great consequence and set aside to appease the spirits of the household dead, who were believed to be particularly active during the month of May. It seems that the most terrifying of the wandering apparitions were those of children who had died young, because they apparently harbored ill feelings for the living. The head of the household would rise at midnight and make the mana fico sign (the thumb between the middle of the closed fingers). He would then walk barefoot through the house and scatter black beans as a ransom so ghosts or spirits would leave the other household members alone. Otherwise, they might be carried off.

Little is known of the public rites that took place at this time, except that all state affairs were in abeyance, no battles were fought, no business was conducted and no marriages were contracted. It is, however, believed that the sacrifices made to Mania (mother of the Lares) on May 11th might have been part of the Lemuria, because Mania was a Goddess of Death.

countdown_4

We have four days to go and still have a little amount to collect. We started out needing $549.00. Thanks to your generosity we only need $100.00. As you can tell the clock above is saying it all this morning. Hopefully during today’s postings, we will meet this amount. I have faith in the Goddess and I know she will provide for us.

Just stop and think about it, wouldn’t you miss us if we weren’t here? Would you miss the Witches Almanac, how about the daily horoscopes? Think about it, where would you find another site that does all this everyday. I don’t believe you would.

Please donate to our ISP Drive to keep us on the internet. Because I know I don’t want to have to say goodbye to all my family and friends here. That would be the hardest thing I ever had to do.

Thank you so much,

Lady A

I know you are as tired of these friendly updates as I am too

Friendship Comments
(couldn’t help it, I love wolves. I miss my Mocha something terrible.)

I don’t know if you noticed it or not. But today after the dailys, there was a long pause. My head started swimming and I actually couldn’t think straight. I have tons of recipes and other things I want to share with you. Those today were from the internet as you can see. I have old books that I want to break open and share from them. Then it hit me, is there a point in doing this. I don’t know if we will be here much longer or not. My eyes welded up with tears. I finally got my act together and started posting again. I know I said we would carry on as usual but believe me, it ain’t been easy.

I just went and opened our PayPal account and got the shock of my life. We now are only $100.00 away from meeting our ISP bill.  I am crying now but they are tears of joy. Thank you  all so very much. I can never begin to repay you for all you have done for us. You are truly sent from the Goddess. Thank you, Thank you so much!

When this is all over and we reach our goal, I am going to publicly thank you (if you don’t want to be thanked publicly, email me and let me know). If it wasn’t for the donations we are receiving we wouldn’t have a place to call home. Personally, I like this old spot on the net and very proud to call it home. I hope the rest of you are too.

Now we only need $100.00. That’s it! We have come so far and now we are so close. If you have even considered donating now is the time to do it. After today, we will only have four more days to go. I know we will be cutting it close but I have faith in you and the Goddess. There are just so many things that we want to do for the Pagan community. Please help us fulfill our dreams and also stay on the net.

Remember no amount is too small.

Thank you so very much,

Lady A

‘THINK on THESE THINGS’ for May 8th

‘THINK on THESE THINGS’
By Joyce Sequichie Hifler

I don’t know of anyone I’d rather see happy than you. Perhaps somewhere along the way you’ll also find what causes it and maybe it will be something you can find within your heart to share with others….for only in sharing are we ever really happy.

Just remember that it may well be where you least expect it. You may recognize it as something you’re about to give away….But don’t worry, it will come back so many times; like love, it seeketh not its own but flies over us like angels. And when it finds a heart big enough to hold all the love it can supply it settles itself, wings and all, within the soul of that love.

And then the world will be new. There will be sights you’ve never seen, yet they have been there all the time….there will be laughter from the heart….and gratitude for all of life’s privileges. There will be peace and contentment….and strength abounding to withstand all adversity….and quiet acknowledgment of God. For without God, there could be none of these.

Elder’s Meditation of the Day May 8

Elder’s Meditation of the Day May 8

“Anyways, with medicine there’s a time and a place for everything. It only comes around once. You have to get it at the right time.”

—- Cecilia Mitchell, MOHAWK

The old ones say two things must be present for a miracle to take place. One, the right time. Two, the right place. This is why we need to honor our ceremonies. Ceremonies are done in an order. This order is applied to open a “door” to the right time and place of the medicine. This door opens to the Spiritual World. The Spiritual World is available to us at the right time and the right place.

My Creator, let me be patient today so the timing is right.

May 8 – Daily Feast

May 8 – Daily Feast

There is something very good about suppertime. Suppertime is more than just a time to eat – it is warm with happy memories. A few sunny hours to run barefoot after school, a time of homecoming and hearing what everyone else did during the day. Suppertime means watching Grandmother make, digalvnhi, Cherokee grape dumplings, and hearing her sing as she worked. A day, a time, an hour never stands on its own, but is bolstered by all those hours that have gone before. Nothing is ever lost – not even the simplest things – for time enhances what has been dear to us. We tend to look back and think something no longer exists. But it does, in all the lovely hours that wait for us – like suppertime – like singing in the kitchen and warm bread baking. This is not just memory, it is sharing life.

The Daily Motivator for May 8th – Making wishes come true

Making wishes come true

If every one of your wishes were instantly granted, you’d probably regret most of them. Fortunately, it takes more than wishing to make it so.

The wishes that come true are the wishes you really, truly want to come true. That’s because you must commit to them and work to bring them about.

Just imagine how disordered and superficial life would be if you were granted every little thing you wished for. Nothing would really have any value to you, because you would not have the opportunity to build that value with your time and effort.

The work you do to achieve what you desire is what makes that achievement meaningful. That work gives you the chance to put your own unique value into the achievement, and that’s what you truly desire.

So, by all means, wish for the very best for yourself, your community, your family and your world. Then get busy bringing those positive wishes to life.

Because you deserve much more than merely a wish that comes true. You deserve to be the person who makes it happen.

The Daily OM for May 8th – A Magical Potion

A Magical Potion
Morning Dew

by Madisyn Taylor

Our very own lives can be magical like the fleeting morning dew on a flower tip.

The world awakens each day from its nightly slumber, transformed by a sparkling layer of morning dew on the grass, on flower petals and leaves, on cars and car windows. These glistening droplets last only a little while, an integral part of what imbues the early morning with its aura of magic. If we sleep too late, we miss the magnificent display of sunlight playing upon an infinite amount of tiny crystal balls. To step onto the dew-covered grass is to anoint our feet with a form of water that comes only once a day for a short time, a rarefied gift of the night air that will soon evaporate in the full light of the sun. If we inhale slowly and consciously enough, it is almost as if we are drinking in this magical elixir formed in the boundary between darkness and light.

In one myth, morning dew is believed to be tears from heaven, and in another, the droplets are poured from the vessel of the goddess of dawn. When we see the earth draped with these shimmering drops, it is easy to imagine fairies bathing in the water, or a sky god weeping from a longing to be closer to his beloved earth goddess. Seeing the sparkling beauty of the earth emerging from darkness, we may understand this longing in terms of our own gratitude; how blessed we are to be here.

Perhaps heaven really does long to be here on earth, and perhaps that is why we are here—as conduits between the divine and the earthbound. As we drink the morning dew in with our eyes, our skin, our breath, it is easy to imagine that it really is a magical potion, a gift from heaven, a reminder of our true purpose, and a daily opportunity to be transformed.

How To Use Your Oils

How To Use Your Oils

MASSAGE

This is the most effective method of using the oils, combining their properties with the therapeutic power of touch. The skin absorbs the oil over a large surface area and because there are many small blood vessels, (capillaries), close to the surface of the skin, the oils, diluted to 5% in a carrier oil, are
carried into the blood stream and then to the relevant parts of the body quickly and effectively.

The oils should not be used undiluted, but should be diluted with an odorless carrier oil, (see section on carrier/base oils), such as grapeseed, sweet almond or peach kernel. A dilution of 3% essential oil to carrier oil is a recommended starting point. (Less if using on sensitive skin such as babies). This is approximately one drop essential oil to two milliliters of carrier oil. (6 drops in two teaspoonfuls). But in all cases less can be definitely more!

BATHS

Using oils in baths is a simple, effective and pleasant way to relax and receive the therapeutic effects. – Water itself has therapeutic value which enhances the powers of the oils. To use, add 6 to 10 drops of essential oil, (or a blend), to the surface of the water which has already been run, add no other substances, e.g. foam or bath oil, then immerse yourself for about 20 minutes. The heat of
the water aids absorption through the skin, whilst you inhale the vapor. (Again reduce the amount of oils used in baths for babies).

Take care with plastic baths as some oils may cause staining.

COMPRESSES

Add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil to 100ml of warm water then soak a piece of clean cotton in the water, wring out the excess and place the cloth on the affected part.

INHALATIONS

Add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil into a bowl of steaming water, then place a towel over your head and the bowl and inhale the vapor for a few minutes.

VAPORIZATION

All essential oils are antiseptic and evaporate easily, so they make very good air-fresheners. Different oils create different atmospheres, so experiment! For example, relaxing Sandalwood or Clary Sage are good for parties; or Peppermint clears your mind when you need to work. There are many vaporizers on the market, from the simple bowl of water on the radiator with a few drops of oil on the surface, to vaporizer light bulb rings and specially made vaporizer bowls which sit above candle holders. There is even the “Aromastone”TM which is an effective electric vaporizer dispensing fragrance from a low heat source, thereby making the water and the oils last longer than usual.

The best way of dispersing essential oils is to use a diffuser or the Aromastream TM, as most other forms of vaporizer drive off the most volatile “high notes” first, leaving the slowly evaporating “base notes” to linger.

I personally believe that vaporizing rings on light bulbs should be used cautiously, though I have not heard off anyone having a fire through using one.

PERFUMES

Make your own distinctive “Natural” perfume by blending different oils. (Many commercial perfumes use synthetic concoctions for their scent.) Try experimenting with different combinations, which can be mixed with a carrier oil or non-fragrant alcohol.

Introduction To Aromatherapy

INTRODUCTION TO AROMATHERPY

Aromatherapy has been around and has been practiced in one form or another since the beginning of civilization. It is the art, and science, of using oils extracted from aromatic plants to enhance health and beauty. Apart from the physical benefits, essential oils can have subtle effects on the mind and emotions. The essential oils taken from plants and used in Aromatherapy have been described as their “life force” – they are essential to the plants’ biological process, as well as being the substance which gives them their scent. Synthetic oils, even if chemically similar, will lack all the natural elements, and that vital life-force, that make essential oils so valuable therapeutically.

Another reason why synthetic oils are not acceptable is that the minor constituents  are never identical. The addition of synthetic chemicals is not normally disclosed in the essential oil business, so unless there is a declaration that the oils are natural, pure and unadulterated, assume otherwise.

Essential oils are extracted from flowers; herbs; spices; woods and fibers, usually by distillation, expression and solvent extraction. Solvent extraction is only acceptable for aromatherapy if the solvent used is completely removed after the manufacturing process

Possessing both sedating and stimulating medicinal effects, basil oil blends well with bergamot oil and lemon oil. When the mixture is heated in an aromatherapy lamp, it is an ideal way to lighten the mood, fight mental fatigue, ward off nervous tension and build self confidence. Try this blend for an extra lift at the end of a stressful day.
