All Signs

This week we have Valentine’s Day, but have you ever wondered how it got started? According to Encyclopedia Britannica: “The holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day.” Wow! Fertility rites! And they chose couples by lottery! (I think this is also the origin of the phrase, “Your number is up!”)

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This is a popular week! Enjoy schmoozing and interacting with clubs and organizations. Your ruler Mars is at the top of your chart, which arouses your ambition. This influence will last for six weeks and it occurs only once every two years so use it! Mercury retrograde will help you because it…

Drawing down the Moon

hypatiaofalexandrea's avatarEnchanted Circle of Witches®

δραςινγ-δοςν-τηε-μοον

Drawing down the Moon (also known as drawing down the Goddess) is a central ritual in many contemporary Wiccan traditions. During the ritual, a coven’s High Priestess enters a trance and requests that the Goddess or Triple Goddess, symbolized by the Moon, enter her body and speak through her. The High Priestess may be aided by the High Priest, who invokes the spirit of the Goddess. During her trance, the Goddess speaks through the High Priestess.

The name most likely comes from a depiction of two women and the moon on an ancient Greek vase, believed to date from the second century BCE.

In classical times of ancient Greece, ancient Thessalian witches were believed to control the moon, according to the tract: “If I command the moon, it will come down; and if I wish to withhold the day, night will linger over my head; and again, if I wish to embark on the sea, I…

THE DREAM WORLD OF A WITCH

For Coven Life

15th April 2019

A 75 year old would have spent 9,125 days of their life sleeping!

In the ancient Hellenic world, dreaming, sleeping and death were considered all related, literally.

Nyx- (night) was the mother of brothers Oneiros- (dream), Hypnos- (sleep) and Thanatos- (death). All are related in mythology, in spirituality and religion. The rebirth, to die the philosopher’s death, the Shamanic death, the Tibetan Bardo Thodol etc…. The key is the symbolic death of leaving the old you and walking in the path of the awakened one. In fact that is what the word Buddha literally translates into, the ‘Awakened’.

Dying to sleep…..

In Tibetan Buddhism, dreams and death are considered to be very similar, much like the ancient Hellenic point of view. Dreaming is used by healers to diagnose and treat disease. These healers are the conduit between humans and spirits to…

On this day the Moon will be in a Waxing Gibbous phase. This phase is when the moon is more than 50% illuminated but not yet a Full Moon. The phase lasts round 7 days with the moon becoming more illuminated each day until the Full Moon. During a Waxing Gibbous the moon will rise in the east in mid-afternoon and will be high in the eastern sky at sunset. The moon is then visible though most of the night sky setting a few hour before sunrise. The word Gibbous first appeared in the 14th century and has its roots in the Latin word “gibbosus” meaning humpbacked.

THE HEX, THE HAG AND THE WITCH

I was recently reading an article about Hexing and Healing. The 2 seem so far removed from each other, however there is a much deeper and familiar connection to both.

The truth in the story is……

Back in the 1800s’ Hex simply meant to cast a spell or bewitch something. As a matter of a fact, most cultures especially from the Dutch and Germanic descents, Hexing was thought beneficial. Magick was magick and was neither Malediction or beneficent.

The below extract from Thesaurus.com explains it well.

Word Origin & History

“1830, American English, from Pennsylvania German hexe “to practice witchcraft,” from German hexen “to hex,” related to Hexe “witch,” from Middle High German hecse, hexse, from Old High German hagazussa (see hag). Noun meaning “magic spell” is first recorded 1909; earlier it meant “a witch” (1856)” https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/hex
