The Sky This Week for August 15 to 20

Comet PANSTARRS, the Perseid meteor shower, and other beautiful things to look for in the sky this week.

Tuesday, August 15

Comet PANSTARRS (C/2015 ER61) currently hovers around 10th or 11th magnitude, bright enough to see through most small telescopes. But its main claim to fame this week is its convenient location just south of the Pleiades star cluster (M45). From August 14 to 21, the solar system object appears as a fuzzy patch of light passing less than 1° south of the dipper-shaped cluster.

Wednesday, August 16

Look for the waning crescent Moon this morning as it hovers just east of the Hyades star cluster in Taurus the Bull. The two objects clear the horizon by 1 a.m. local daylight time and climb halfway to the zenith by the time morning twilight begins. The Moon appears 35 percent lit and easily outshines the stars of the V-shaped Hyades. First-magnitude Aldebaran, which marks one tip of the V, appears brighter than the rest of the cluster’s stars because it actually lies in the foreground.

Thursday, August 17

Jupiter appears low in the west-southwest an hour after sunset this week. The brilliant planet shines at magnitude –1.8 and dominates the evening sky. It appears against the backdrop of Virgo, some 6° to the right of the Maiden’s brightest star, 1st-magnitude Spica. When viewed through a telescope, Jupiter’s disk spans 33″ and shows a wealth of atmospheric detail.

Friday, August 18

Look overhead around 10 p.m. anytime this week and your eyes will fall on the brilliant star Vega in the constellation Lyra the Harp. At magnitude 0.0, Vega is the brightest member of the prominent Summer Triangle asterism. The Triangle’s second-brightest star, magnitude 0.8 Altair in Aquila the Eagle, lies some 35° southeast of Vega. The asterism’s dimmest member, magnitude 1.3 Deneb in Cygnus the Swan, stands about 25° east-northeast of Vega.

The Moon reaches perigee, the closest point in its orbit around Earth, at 9:18 a.m. EDT. It then lies 227,497 miles (366,121 kilometers) from Earth’s center.

Saturday, August 19

By the time morning twilight starts to paint the sky, your eyes will be drawn to the eastern sky for a meeting of the night sky’s two brightest objects. Brilliant Venus rises first, clearing the horizon shortly before 3:30 a.m. local daylight time. Less than a half-hour later, the waning crescent Moon joins the planet. The two make a stunning pair as they climb higher in the twilight sky. Venus, which shines at magnitude –3.9, appears 20° above the horizon an hour before sunrise.

Distant Neptune reaches opposition and peak visibility in just two weeks, but the view now is essentially the same. The ice giant planet rises during evening twilight and climbs nearly halfway to the zenith in the southern sky by 2 a.m. local daylight time. The magnitude 7.8 planet lies in Aquarius, 1.5° east of 4th-magnitude Lambda (l) Aquarii. You’ll need binoculars to spy Neptune and a telescope to see its blue-gray disk, which spans 2.4″.

The Hesperides , Daughters of the Evening

“…amidst the gardens fair

Of Hesperus and his daughters three,

That sing about the golden tree.” (“Comus” by Milton)

 

The Hesperides are Daughters of Nyx, the Mother Night – although later mythology has Them as daughters of Atlas or of Hesperus. The three sisters – Aegle (the luminous one), Erytheia (the crimson one) and Hesperia (the evening one) – are nymphs who live in a beautiful garden, situated in the Arcadian Mountains (Greece) or, alternatively, at the western extreme of the Mediterranean, near Mt. Atlas. In this garden grows the tree with the golden apples of immortality. This garden is guarded by Ladon, a dragon with a hundred heads and who has the gift of human speech. The Hesperides are known for Their sweet singing voices and also have the ability to change Their shapes and become trees – Aegle into a willow, Erytheia into an elm and Hesperia into a poplar.

 

The only person who ever succeeded in obtaining some of the immortal golden apples from the garden of the Hesperides was Hercules, who tricked the God Atlas to get the apples for him. The apples were later returned to the garden by Athena because the sacred fruit were not to remain outside the garden.

 

The Hesperides have as associations: the apple; the color gold; immortality; gardens; and the trees poplar, elm and willow.

The Magickal Day of Tuesday

 

Named for the Norse god Tyr, who was a deity of heroism and combat, Tuesday is a very martial sort of day – color associations include bright red and oranges, as well as warrior-like metals such as iron and steel.

 

The ancient Romans called this day Martis, after the warrior god Mars – other deities associated with Tuesday include Ares, the Morrighan, and other gods of battle and glory. Red gemstones like rubies and garnets come into play on Tuesdays, as do herbs and plants such as thistles, holly, coneflowers and cacti – you’ll notice these are all sharp, prickly plants!

 

One of the interesting – and more than a little amusing – aspects of Tuesday magic is that in addition to war and conflict against your enemies, this is a day also associated with marriage. You can also use this day of the week for magical workings connected to protection and initiation. Use Tuesday to assert yourself, make a mark and stake your claims

The Witches Guide to Tuesdays

 

A god, goddess, or planet governs each day of the week. It is usually easy to spot the ruler of the day by its name. The word Tuesday, however, is not so easy, but if we look at the word in Spanish, Martes, we clearly see its connections to Mars.

 

Because Tuesday revolves around the energy of Mars, Tuesdays are good for business, mechanical things, buying and selling animals, hunting, beginning studies, gardening, sexual activities, and confrontation. This is a day for sex magick, energy, stamina, and health. As in the old saying, Tuesdays child is full of grace, is also good for success magick and defense against enemies.

 

Angels of Tuesday are Camael, Samael, Satael, Amabiel, Friagne, and Hyniel. When invoked, Camael takes the form of a leopard. In Druid mythology he is a god of war, which is why we see him associated with Mars. Camael is said to be a member of the “Magnificent Seven” in some circles. Camael is another “terminator” angel.

 

Samael walks both worlds as a magician and sorcerer. some see him as the angel of death, others as “the bright and poisonous one.” Many consider him more of a demon, and accuse him of being Satan. However, there is reference to the satans (plural) as enforcers of the law, a sort of angelic police, if you will. Supposedly, when Samael is around, dogs howl in the night. On one hand, he is the ruler of the fifth heaven and in charge of two million angels; on the other, he is the one who changed into a serpent and convinced Eve to partake of the forbidden fruit of knowledge.

 

Satael is an angel of air invoked in magic rites and is the presiding spirit of the planet Mars. Amabiel is another spirit of the planet Mars; however he spends his energy on issues of human sexuality. Friagne, also an angel of this day, is invoked from the east. He is a member of the fifth heaven. Hyniel also belongs to this day and is subject to the east wind.

 

On Tuesdays the hour of sunrise and every eight hours after that are also ruled by Mars, and that makes these times of the day doubly blessed. These four hours are the strongest ones to do ritual in. Check your local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine your local sunrise.

Let’s Talk Witch – Rites of Passage

We have several rites of passage, the most common of which is initiation. Others include the marking of important phases of life such as birth (wiccaning), coming of age, marriage (handfasting) and death. A rite of passage unique to Witchcraft is Eldering or the honoring of The Elders.

Witchcraft is a religion by choice. For this reason, initiation takes on great importance since it marks a formal entrance of a free-willed individual into The Craft. Some Witches have a collective, celebratory ceremony, whereas others are happy with a simple, solitary meditation. Whichever way it is marked, it is a greatly spiritual moment, marking the beginning of a religious journey.

Various traditions and individuals have different ways of performing a Wiccan/Witchcraft initiation ritual. Under British Traditional Wicca and other similar traditions, there are usually three degrees of initiation. There is also a prescribed period of dedication before the first initiation.

During the dedication period of a year and a day, a person promises to make an effort to study Witchcraft as much as possible. After that, the first degree initiation may be held. For coven initiates, there is usually a ceremony in which an individual is granted entrance into the Wiccan community. A first-degree Wiccan initiate then becomes responsible for his or her own spiritual well-being. The second and third degrees in Wicca mean an increase in the level of responsibility.

Another interesting, commonly performed Witchcraft ceremony is handfasting. This rite is performed to join together two individuals in the eyes of the God and Goddess. Wiccan handfasting ceremonies are as varied as regular wedding ceremonies. They are usually performed in a circle like other Wiccan rituals. The hands of the couple are tied together for symbolic value. A common wedding vow amongst Wiccans is a variation of the beautiful phrase “for as long as love lasts.”

Wiccans have a naming or wiccaning ceremony upon the birth of a child. Although this child may not choose to be a Wiccan when he or she grows up, his Wiccan parents wish to keep him or her under the protection of the God and Goddess.

A fairly newer rite in Wicca is to honor those who have been on this religious path for more than 20 years. It is called eldering, and is a sort of a retirement for a senior Wiccan from a position of power. In the ceremony, the elder tells stories about his or her journey of Wicca. He or she shares experiences and gives advice to younger Wiccans.

A passing away or death rite is also observed by many Wiccans. Usually this custom is started before the Wiccan’s actual death so that he or she may take part in it as well. The practices vary with each individual but are designed to make the dying Wiccan’s passage easier.

Ritual: Place the candle in the large black bowl or cauldron, affixing it with droppings of another black candle. The candle should be tall enough to extend a few inches above the rim.

Fill the cauldron to the rim with fresh water, without welling the candle’s wick. Deep breathe meditate, clear your mind and light the candle. Visualize the suspected spell’s power as residing within the candles flame. Sit in quiet contemplation of the candle and visualize the power flowing and growing within the candle’s flame. As the candle burns down, its flame will eventually sputter and go out as it contacts the water. As soon as the water has extinguished the flame, the spell will be dispersed. See the spell power explode into dust. Pour water in a hole in the ground and bury the candle.

Magickal Necessities

 

This store still has some categories not completely filled up but they will be. At least you can see what we have been doing. I thought you enjoyed the store so I re-built another one. Our other store was on Go-Daddy and it was abruptly pulled by Go-Daddy. We were presented with a bill for almost $500 from them. We were suppose to have a free month with them, which we didn’t get. To activate that store, we had to pay up front. I called them and they were going to give us a discount for our  monthly bill, needless to say we didn’t get that either. They had us signed up for 2 accounts with them. When I called the rep was suppose to take of that, she didn’t. So when it was all said and done, we had two accounts and they deducted the money out of our account. I liked to have shit when I saw that and called them again. Oh and did you know Go-Daddy is not meant for you to build stores or websites on? I was informed it was only intended for a lead-in page to another site, not build a store on. I believe somewhere someone is doing some false advertising!!! Anyway that is how I got our money back and when I got back to the computer the store was gone in a flash. No time to transfer anything or save anything. So this new store is from scratch. I believe Go-Daddy did us a favor, to me this is a much better looking store anyway. But if you deal with Go-Daddy BEWARE!

 

I would like to finish the store up tonight and be back here tomorrow. If that is going to happen, I don’t know. I just didn’t want you to think we had left the country. I thought you enjoyed the store and I got pissed, no more like mad as hell, when they pulled it so quick. Hell, I don’t even know if there was orders there or not. But have a little patience, I am doing this for you.  Hopefully, we will see you tomorrow.

Look overhead around 11 p.m. local daylight time any day this week and your eyes will fall on the brilliant star Vega in the constellation Lyra the Harp. At magnitude 0.0, Vega is the brightest member of the prominent Summer Triangle asterism. The Triangle’s second-brightest star, magnitude 0.8 Altair in Aquila the Eagle, lies some 35° southeast of Vega. The asterism’s dimmest member, magnitude 1.3 Deneb in Cygnus the Swan, stands about 25° east-northeast of Vega. Although the waxing gibbous Moon diminishes the luster of stars this week, the Summer Triangle remains conspicuous.

Distant Neptune reaches opposition and peak visibility in just a month, but the view now is essentially the same. The ice giant planet rises around 9:30 p.m. local daylight time and climbs nearly halfway to the zenith in the southern sky by 3 a.m. The magnitude 7.8 planet lies in Aquarius, 2° east of 4th-magnitude Lambda (l) Aquarii. You’ll need binoculars to spy Neptune and a telescope to see its blue-gray disk, which spans 2.4″.

Sunday, August 6

Asteroid 89 Julia should be relatively easy to find through small telescopes south of the Great Square of Pegasus. Your signpost for finding this magnitude 9.6 space rock is a squashed box of four 5th-magnitude stars: 55, 57, 58, and 59 Pegasi. The box lies 6° south of magnitude 2.5 Markab (Alpha [a] Peg), the star that marks the Great Square’s southwestern corner. Tonight, Julia stands 1.5° south of 59 Peg. If you sketch the field and then return to the same area a night or two later, you should be able to detect the asteroid’s movement relative to the stellar background.

On Friday, August 4th, We Honor the Goddess Psyche

IN CLASSICAL GREECE AND Rome, the goddess Psyche began her life as a mortal woman whose unworldly beauty won her divinity—as well as the love of a god more powerful than any. Psyche symbolizes the woman’s soul as love transforms her from innocence to wisdom; the Greek word for both “butterfly” and “soul” is psyche. Psyche is often depicted with the translucent wings of a butterfly, suggesting her transformation from mortal girl to goddess. After the ultimate transformation of death, many traditions hold that the spirit leaves the body in the form of a butterfly or moth.

The goddess Psyche is best known for her association with Cupid, the handsome son of Venus; Cupid’s name is derived from cupido, the Latin word for “desire.” Psyche’s transformation from mortal girl to woman goddess began when Cupid fell in love with her against his will.

LOVE’S TRANSFORMATION

Since Psyche’s birth, men and women had hailed her as a new goddess because of her beauty. These attentions also brought her the angry notice of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. When mortals neglected her temples to honor Psyche instead, Venus took revenge. She asked Cupid to visit Psyche while she slept and pierce her with one of his magic arrows. After waking, the girl would burn with a foolish lust for the first thing she might see.

Though Cupid had heard the praises of Psyche’s beauty, his hands shook upon seeing the beauty asleep. An arrow poised in his bow slipped, grazing his thigh. From that moment, Cupid loved Psyche and wanted her above all others. Unable to act on his desire because of his mother’s jealousy, Cupid visited the girl each night as she slept.

Weeks passed and Psyche remained unaware of the god of love’s attentions. Then Psyche’s parents decided it was time that she marry. Months passed and no suitor asked Psyche for her hand. In desperation, desperation, her parents consulted the oracle of Apollo. Animals were sacrificed, their bones thrown and read by the priests. All the signs led to one message: No mortal man would be Psyche’s husband. Instead, the gods decreed that she should be abandoned upon a cliff where a monster would claim her as his bride. Everyone wept at the news, for surely this meant Psyche’s death.

But something unexpected occurred once Psyche was left alone to await her husband. Soft winds cradled the girl, carrying her to a faraway island where a palace stood. In its darkest chamber, Psyche was met by an unseen man who embraced her as his wife. When she awoke in the morning, he was gone.

Apart from the world, Psyche’s husband continued to visit her each night in the darkness. She was content, for he was kind and loving. But in time, Psyche carried a child within her; her satisfaction turned to doubt as she remembered the oracle’s frightening prediction. What if she gave birth to a monster who would slay her upon his emergence from her womb? She decided she had to know who she had married—even if this knowledge destroyed her happiness.

One night Psyche’s curiosity got the better of her. She waited until her husband fell asleep, lit a lamp, and stole a look at him. No beast greeted her eyes—only the radiant Cupid. Psyche’s hands shook, spilling hot oil onto him. Injured, the love god awoke and disappeared in a rage, ignoring the girl’s profuse apologies.

While Cupid’s anger quickly cooled, Venus’s did not. The goddess made Psyche perform a series of daunting tasks to prove herself worthy of her son. With a little divine help, the girl completed them all and was reunited with her husband—and transformed into a goddess. In time, their child, a daughter named Pleasure, was born in the brilliant presence of the gods and goddesses of Olympus.

Often referred to as “precious coral,” this “gemstone” is actually a marine coral, the skeleton of deepwater branching corals called the cnidarians. Being an ocean organism, it’s not too hard to figure out why it became associated with the goddesses Aphrodite and Venus. Precious coral comes in a range of colors, from a warm reddish pink to pale pink and deeper reddish tones. Coral has been worked into beads, jewelry, and deity statues for thousands of years. The ancient Romans believed that coral beads protected children from harm and could heal wounds. According ing to gem folklore, coral earrings were once worn to attract men; I don’t see why that bit of information couldn’t be used successfully today by any Witches who are looking to bring some romance into their lives. This is a gorgeous stone and one worth owning and working magick with. This gem’s classic magickal correspondences are the planet Venus and the element of Water.

Magickal Philter for Fridays

Love Potion

This philter recipe and spell is more about the emotionality of love and less about the sexual act. Besides adding this to your basic romance spells and rituals, some other suggestions on how to use this love-imbued imbued philter include adding it to candles to increase a positive, loving, and romantic vibe in the home. You may add a drop or two to any sachets or charm bags to bump up their positive, loving energies. Think about it … where else could your life use a little love, happiness, and charm?

You Will Need:
1 small decorative glass bottle (look for a heart shape or go for red or pink glass if you can find it)
Base oil (almond works well), approximately 1/8 cup
Clean dropper
3 drops rose oil
3 drops rose geranium oil
1 drop vanilla extract or a vanilla bean
Small rose quartz chip
6 inches each of thin red, pink, and aqua satin ribbon
1 small metal heart-shaped charm or talisman that you feel coordinates with love
A label and a pen (to list the ingredients and to decorate and mark the bottle)

 

Pour the base oil into the bottle so it is filled three quarters of the way full. Add the essential oils one at a time. Next, add the crystal and the vanilla. Close up the bottle with the lid, place your fingers over the lid, and carefully shake up the mixture. Hold up the mixture to the sunlight and allow the light of Friday’s sun to illuminate the philter within.

 

Wipe off the outside of the bottle. Use the label to list the ingredients and the use of this potion. Decorate the bottle by drawing the sigil of Venus or hearts. If you have other magickal symbols that you would like to use for love and romance, then add those to the label. Attach the label to the glass bottle and finish up by threading the metal charm onto the ribbon and then tying the three colored ribbons (the red ribbon bon for Freya, the pink for Frigga, and the aqua ribbon for Aphrodite) around the neck of the bottle.

 

As you finish tying on the bow, hold the bottle in your hands and concentrate on the visualization that the aura around your heart is glowing with a brilliant rose pink color (similar to the previous Aphrodite crystal ritual directions). Call on these three goddesses silently and ask for their assistance. See love and romance arriving in your life in the best possible way. Do not focus on any one person in particular; let the universe verse and the goddesses send who they see fit. Now push all that energy from your visualization into the philter bottle that you hold in your hands. Take a deep breath, hold it for three counts, and then blow it out slowly. Now, repeat the charm below:

 

Dear Aphrodite, Freya, and Frigga, now gather ’round
Bless this potion with Venus’s energies that today abound
Because the best day to work love magick is Friday
Encourage love and romance in the best possible way
May this philter enhance my loving witchery
For the good of all and by the power of three.

 

Set aside the bottle, and ground and center yourself. Clean up the supplies and eat a few crackers or do something physical. Make sure to store the love and romance philter in a dark, dry place out of the reach of young children.

Gather a white feather (symbol for Eros and his mighty wings), a rosy pink candle, and a coordinating candle holder.

 

Carve a simple figure of a bow and arrow on the side of the candle. Place the feather off to the side, away from the heat of the candle flame. Picture the winged god Eros in your mind, and meditate on this image for a moment. Now, ask Eros in your own words to inspire you with passion and enthusiasm. Below you will find 13 questions that you should be able to answer at the end of your initial study period. Also are included are answers, not necessarily the right answer, but answers to make you think. The answers are also provided because you have learned so much and perhaps some of the things you might have forgotten. Either way, the answers are just examples and to be used a thought provoking.

In historic times a pagan would have been any number of peoples worshiping nature gods. This worship seems to have been based in prehistoric forms of religion including shamanism with a pedigree of it’s oldest forms echoing back more than 30,000 years. Because these religions were based mostly in tribal cultures emphasizing tradition rather than sophistication, the sources tend to be entirely oral. Verbatim memorization, while it’s possessors survive, tends to be a more exact method of transmitting data than holy texts which can (and have been) altered or completely changed.

 

With the complete suppression of the tradition, however, knowledge of paganism has faded to a faint glimmering of references and supposition. In modern times a pagan would tend to be someone feeling the lack of purity, lack of originality, lack of rootedness, lack of foundation in over-theologized religions whose original message has been overgrown and altered to suit priestly interests, whose leaders’ preachment is motivated often by self-interest and whose ‘qualifications are primarily glandular and (sick) psychological rather than illumination.

 

The pagans I have met are, in general, more sensitive than normal and ‘feel’ the world directly, in contrast to this miasmatic culture which submerges us in ‘safe’ anonymity, relegating us a guaranteed role as a consumer unit. The religions that fail to give us more dignity than that, that fail to foment rebellion against such an insult naturally lose those more sensitive people. They fail to grant us a path of rejoining to ourself. A pagan seeks this and it is the very lack of structure which allows the freedom of thought and feeling and practice that attracts so many people that have been ‘lost’ by other religions.

 

In our ‘culture’ traditions regarding the manner of living are relegated to the ‘ignorant’ past and lost. Responding to this need the neo-pagan will try to re-create a life-enhancing religion open to individual experience based on whatever gleanings of the ancient forms are left. Given enough intelligent application and sufficient political freedom, a reasonable facsimile, true in spirit and similar in some forms will evolve. Truly, much of what was lost was priceless and will never be recovered, but also a great much of what was lost had decayed beyond recovering so that the last people to suffer under these benighted superstitions that had once been vital religions, probably were better off without. We have the opportunity to rebuild, to renew with vitality, to recover what was good that is still known.

 

People being what they are, divergence seems to be the rule, yet we live in a ‘global village’ and cross-reference and cross-fertilization is inevitable. It is the talent of wicca to seek that which works and as we relearn what can create a life that is true to the heart we will share. Given the degree of computer interconnection in our society, it would not be surprising that techniques rediscovered in one place would be known world wide within a season, just by word of computer. It is a time for hard work for what we do now will be what those who come after will have to build on. The freedom of choice and association and abundance of sources almost guarantees that bull in the name of the gods will quickly get trashed. It is a time for honesty and genius

 

A pagan is a being in a state of becoming.

 

2. Define and describe a witch.

 

I would say that a witch is someone belonging to a coven and worshiping nature gods. A witch may have special knowledge and powers regarding herbal lore, magic, divination, magical flight, separation of the body and soul, love philters, amulets, exorcism, trance-medium-ship, hypnosis, communion with god/dess’, communication with spirits, drawing down the Moon, invocation of good and exorcism of evil influences, and more, perhaps. The means of producing these results may be in the traditional circle, guided by a priest and priestess, by chanting, drum-beating, dancing, ritual invocation and supplication

 

These powers have been supposed to be special wild or inherited talents to do evil by intention alone (1) but I feel they are, when possessed, no more or less than the natural power of life, consciously directed. This power is automatically controlled daily without our conscious direction or realization.

 

As our digestion or circulation function without express thought, the life power is utilized at an even more basic level to create our life and world. Expressed unconsciously for whim or feat, self-destruction or in creativity, it is not without us but a part of us, a part of every living cell. Thus, not only is it a very legal power to us, but to miss to direct it consciously would be like missing the oars in a rowboat, the doors of a house. Some people brag that they never read the directions supplied in the package. To avoid discovering the ‘directions’ supplied with life would seem to be to miss most of the glory of being alive.

(1) Witches were and are supposed to be entirely evil and opposed in every action to the expression of life. (Surely such a creature would self-destruct!) This is an expression of the ‘alien’ theory which has been used by many (ignorant) cultures to explain the presence of evil and imperfection in a world that is ‘supposed’ to be perfect. It is a terrifying theory but apparently people would rather be scared silly than say, “I made a mistake” or “What seems evil to us is just the natural working of life.” The appellation of ‘witch’ has been given to Huns, Jews, heretics, and recently to men by some feminists.

 

3. Are you one of the above or both?

4. If so, say what and why.

 

I am myself. I am what I do. I have avoided labels for myself and would not start sticking them onto myself based on the attendance of a few functions. Precisely, I have not been accepted as an initiate, an essential step in a tradition oriented to group membership. I am not a pagan in the sense that, outside of weekly circles, I do not worshipany god or goddess.

 

5. What do you see as positive in paganism?

 

I have always felt good in the circle. I have said it previously that I am happy to be here. But in thinking how to answer this question I have found some answers that have much reinforced these feelings. What is here in paganism is unique and precious.

 

Here there is the encouragement of individuality and also a strong, positive and unique group identity; this is very rare, especially in our society.

 

Here there is spiritual expression within a true construction of religion and including respect for the need for personal freedom of expression; this is very rare in any society.

 

Here there is tradition in a society that has eschewed tradition in favor of the new, especially new products; yet what is the meaning of products which have no context?

 

Here there is honor to each sex in a society that is very divisive and competitive and generally derisive of everyone especially women. Here there is a celebration of life in a society that seems to have forgotten where it came from and remains; which if it recognizes nature as valuable converts it into a prepackaged commodity. Indeed, the value of nature is a matter of constant debate, a debate that is inevitably won by those who see value only in dollar signs.

 

Here there is a group of intelligent people large enough to be interesting yet small enough that each is important, whether one attends, who one is and especially if one participates in helping, each is important. All these things are RARE in our society; their convergence here is unique and precious.

 

6. What do you see as negative in paganism.

 

I don’t know. I haven’t had any problems so far. The need for secrecy is inconvenient in some respects particularly at work and with some friends who, I am certain, will never be able to grasp the notion correctly. But then secrets can be kind of fun, too. I have found the essential facts of paganism not directly accessible but I am beginning to understand that it is a fairly large subject. (Added 15 June ’89) A certain lack of focus. It is understandable since there is no central authority to impose goals. Yet is should be possible to agree on basic needs and goals and though there would be no overseer,
a kind of competition based on comparison of results (apparent infests, perhaps). To achieve this, however, we need to understand what is needed and why. Still there does seem to be a good deal of work being done in different places. The quality and amount of information is expanding every year.

 

7. What is your concept of death?

An incomprehensible, insensible condition concluding our actions here on earth. A period of summation and consolidation; having shed to the earth the accumulation of errors and age in the body, one is reborn, washed clean in the blood of the new life. I particularly like the idea that it might be something like Scrooge’s Christmas Eve; seeing and understanding the events of one’s life, then the regrets of unexpressed love would be the motive impelling the soul to rebirth.

But then I don’t really know. It might be nothing.

 

8. What do the following words bring to your mind: god, goddess, priest, priestess.

 

God, Goddess, ineffable, incomprehensible being beyond our concept of good or evil. The notion of sex in gods is our convention to aid philosophical discussion and to assist in forming an emotional relationship. (added 15 June ’89) “Maybe something more, rooted in our nature.”, Daniel’s comment.

 

Priest, priestess: persons who have made a commitment to further their religion by their personal effort. Being ordained or initiated and all that. The sexual distinction is trivial, relatively speaking, of course. The essential act is that of spiritual guidance and this is more a matter of training and talent.

 

9. What are the privileges and obligations of a teacher?

 

To share knowledge, to have one’s expressions listened to, to enjoy the responses of one’s students. To be responsible in what and how things are taught. To admit freely areas of one’s doubt or little knowledge to be clear in expression and patient in explanation. To respect and respond to the students efforts as the teacher’s purpose.

 

10. What are the privileges and responsibilities of a student?

 

To share knowledge, to enjoy the attendance of a teacher to one’s education. To work actively toward the development of one’s education, to respect the teacher and cooperate and trust, within reason. The teacher’s responsibilities are greater.

 

11. What do you seek from Wicca?

 

A personal path and some help along the way. Friends that don’t say things like “You don’t believe THAT, do you?”

 

12. Are you more attracted to the religious or practical side of Wicca?

 

I can’t say. My conception of any sincerely religious person is that he tries to express his convictions into his life. To me, it seems that the most potent form of prayer is in work. Or like Gurdjieff said, “Work as if everything depends on work. Pray as if everything depends on prayer.” It seems to me the lack of practical work leaves a religion without a skeleton, the rest of the tissue has nothing to hang on. I would say that the practical side, including much of the wisdom teachings, should not be separated from the religious except as a convention to facilitate teaching.

 

13. Are there any areas of this framework that you particularly wish to study. What and why.

 

I’m not sure. Right now I’m just taking it all in in any order whatever. I would like to understand the philosophical framework better. Moon lore has happily occupied me this last year and promises to be a long-continuing interest. The laws and the social framework of wicca are also very intriguing. My idea now about ritual work is that it is possibly best as a form of self-therapy, at least in the beginning, since all of us come to this very peculiarities can be pinned down and dealt with.

Uranus’ eastward motion against the background stars comes to a halt at 6 a.m. EDT. This so-called stationary point marks the beginning of the best period to observe the outer planet. Uranus rises before midnight local daylight time and appears more than halfway to the zenith in the southeastern sky as morning twilight commences. The magnitude 5.8 planet lies in Pisces, 1.2° north of magnitude 4.3 Omicron (o) Piscium. A telescope reveals Uranus’ blue-green disk, which spans 3.6″.

Friday, August 4

Look overhead around 11 p.m. local daylight time any day this week and your eyes will fall on the brilliant star Vega in the constellation Lyra the Harp. At magnitude 0.0, Vega is the brightest member of the prominent Summer Triangle asterism. The Triangle’s second-brightest star, magnitude 0.8 Altair in Aquila the Eagle, lies some 35° southeast of Vega. The asterism’s dimmest member, magnitude 1.3 Deneb in Cygnus the Swan, stands about 25° east-northeast of Vega. Although the waxing gibbous Moon diminishes the luster of stars this week, the Summer Triangle remains conspicuous.

Saturday, August 5

Distant Neptune reaches opposition and peak visibility in just a month, but the view now is essentially the same. The ice giant planet rises around 9:30 p.m. local daylight time and climbs nearly halfway to the zenith in the southern sky by 3 a.m. The magnitude 7.8 planet lies in Aquarius, 2° east of 4th-magnitude Lambda (l) Aquarii. You’ll need binoculars to spy Neptune and a telescope to see its blue-gray disk, which spans 2.4″.

Sunday, August 6

Asteroid 89 Julia should be relatively easy to find through small telescopes south of the Great Square of Pegasus. Your signpost for finding this magnitude 9.6 space rock is a squashed box of four 5th-magnitude stars: 55, 57, 58, and 59 Pegasi. The box lies 6° south of magnitude 2.5 Markab (Alpha [a] Peg), the star that marks the Great Square’s southwestern corner. Tonight, Julia stands 1.5° south of 59 Peg. If you sketch the field and then return to the same area a night or two later, you should be able to detect the asteroid’s movement relative to the stellar background.

On Thursday, August 3rd, We Honor the Goddess Cybele

Early Worship of Cybele

Cybele, a mother goddess of Rome was at the center of a rather bloody Phrygian cult, and was sometimes known as Magna Mater, or “great goddess.” As part of their worship, priests performed mysterious rites in her honor. Of particular note was the sacrifice of a bull performed as part of an initiation into Cybele’s cult. This ritual was known as the , and during the rite a candidate for initiation stood in a pit under a floor with a wooden grate.

The bull was sacrificed above the grate, and the blood ran through holes in the wood, showering the initiate. This was a form of ritual purification and rebirth. For an idea of what this probably looked like, there’s an amazing scene in the HBO series Rome in which the character Atia makes a sacrifice to Cybele to protect her son Octavian, who later becomes the emperor Augustus.

Cybele’s lover was Attis, and her jealousy caused him to castrate and kill himself. His blood was the source of the first violets, and divine intervention allowed Attis to be resurrected by Cybele, with some help from Zeus. Thanks to this resurrection story, Cybele came to be associated with the endless cycle of life, death and rebirth. In some areas, there is still an annual three-day celebration of Attis’ rebirth and Cybele’s power around the time of the spring equinox, called the Hilaria.

 

The Cult of Cybele in the Ancient World

Like Attis, it is said that Cybele’s followers would work themselves into orgiastic frenzies and then ritually castrate themselves.

After this, these priests donned women’s clothing, and assumed female identities. They became known as the Gallai. In some regions, female priestesses led Cybele’s dedicants in rituals involving ecstatic music, drumming and dancing. Under the leadership of Augustus Caesar, Cybele became extremely popular.

Augustus erected a giant temple in her honor on the Palatine Hill, and the statue of Cybele that is in the temple bears the face of Augustus’ wife, Livia.

During an excavation of a temple site at Çatalhöyük, in modern-day Turkey, a statue of a very pregnant Cybele was unearthed in what was once a granary, which indicates her importance as a deity of fertility and fecundity. As the Roman Empire spread, deities of other cultures found themselves absorbed into Roman religion. In the case of Cybele, she later took on many aspects of the Egyptian goddess Isis.

Donald Wasson of Ancient History Encyclopedia says, “Due to its agricultural nature, her cult had tremendous appeal to the average Roman citizen, more so women than men. She was responsible for every aspect of an individual’s life. She was the mistress of wild nature, symbolized by her constant companion, the lion. Not only was she was a healer (she both cured and caused disease) but also the goddess of fertility and protectress in time of war (although, interestingly, not a favorite among soldiers), even offering immortality to her adherents. She is depicted in statues either on a chariot pulled by lions or enthroned carrying a bowl and drum, wearing a mural crown, flanked by lions.

Followers of her cult would work themselves into an emotional frenzy and self-mutilate, symbolic of her lover’s self-castration.”

 

Honoring Cybele Today

Today, Cybele has taken on a new role, and it’s one that has nothing to do with sacrificial bulls. She has become the deity honored by a number of members of the transgender community, and an icon for many Pagan feminists. Perhaps the best known Cybeline group is the Maetreum of Cybele in upstate New York.

Founder Cathryn Platine says on the group’s website, “Our theology starts from the simplest basis: That the Divine Feminine principle is the basis of the universe. That all of us, all that we encounter is Her in the aggregate. We are all the Great Mother learning about Herself. From this simple beginning springs our organizational models, our rituals, the principles of what we call Wholistic Feminism, our mission of charitable outreach and indeed the way we, as Cybelines, live our lives.

We are sometimes called the “scholarly Cybelines” because we have invested many years of strict historical research in order to embrace the essence of what proved to be literally the oldest surviving religion in the world. We embraced the essence and then stepped away from “Pagan Reconstructionism” by bringing those essences into the modern world.”

Thursday’s Witchery

 

Today is the day for prosperity work of all kinds. It can also be used for healing work, whether that is a physical healing of an illness or an emotional healing. Also remember that you have to follow up your healing work and prosperity magick and physical action.

I can’t tell you the number of times I have met new witches who complain to me that their prosperity spell or “I need a better job” spell did not work as they expected. They’ll ramble on and on about how much time and money they spent working their magick….but, alas, they had no glorious manifestation of wealth or fabulous job that suddenly dropped out of the sky and landed in their laps.

Then, when I gently ask them, “Did you enchant your resume or application when you filled it out? Did you do a little confidence-boosting spellwork when you went to apply for the job or went to the interview?” typically they give me a blank, confused stare.

Nine times out of ten, their response is, “You mean I have to go out and actually look for the job too?” Um, yes, my dear, you certainly do. Magick follows the path of least resistance, which means it’s going to manifest along the simplest, quickest route. Get out there and hit the pavement. See what you can find. Times are tough and competition for good jobs is fierce, so you need whatever edge you can get. For folks like us, we’re going to get the edge by using our magick and our spellcraft.

Thursdays have such a rich source of magick for us to draw upon that, honestly, the sky is the limit. This is the day associated with the gods of the sky and heavens, after all. Get to know these deities and add their wisdom and magick into your days

The Witches Musts for Thursday

 

Try wearing some honeysuckle-scented perfume to encourage prosperity. Bewitch someone by wearing deep royal blue or brighten up a dreary day by wearing lucky, prosperity-drawing green. Brew up a pot of mint tea to help increase your cash flow. Try adding a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon to an unscented candle to encourage some fast cash. Bake up a loaf of wheat bread for the family, and celebrate abundance and be thankful for all that you have.

Conjure up a witchy craft and create a philter or two for your magickal needs. Work with the deities and the magickal plants corresponding with Thursday.

The Waxing Crescent Moon occurs 3 ½ to 7 days after the New Moon. She rises in the mid-morning and sets in the evening. The Moon’s light is quickening. As the Moon has dropped back until she is about ?th of the way behind the Sun, we see her lumination as a crescent shape.

You will see the first quarter Moon from 7 to 10 ½ days after the New Moon. She will rise around noon and set around midnight.

As the Moon is at a right angle to the Sun the difference between high and low tide is minimized. Because light and dark are in balance, the Moon will appear to be a Half Moon, but the area of light will continue to grow each day.

The Waxing Gibbous Moon occurs between 10 ½ and 14 days after the New Moon. She rises sometime in the mid-afternoon and sets in the early dark hours of the morning.

As the Moon has fallen back around ? of the way behind the Sun, one side of the Moon is seen fully and the light on the other side bulges out, but does not yet fill all of the Moon’s face.

Spell To Banish Debt

 

Best do this spell on Days of either Thursday day of Jupiter which brings money, careers, and luck in financial matters.

Or do the spell on a day of Saturn a.k.a Saturday. And done on a waning moon or a new moon to banish, and to bring positivity.

You will need:

1) Green Candle, or try 1 Gold Candle
1) Black Candle to Banish Negativity off Debt.
Money attracting Herb/Herbs of the following: Allspice, Basil, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Ginger, Mandrake, Marjoram, Mint, Patchouli, Pine, or sage.
Money attracting oil: Basil, Cinnamon, Patchouli, or Pine.
One copy of your bills will be needed, or the actual bills. If you can’t get to the bills write out each bill of what you owe debt on parchment or clean white paper.
Money Attracting Incense/or other Money attracting type incense if you don’t have Money attracting incense.

Something to carve with

To start this spell:

1) Ask the universe to rid you of negativity, and remove obstacles over your bath. As well as ask for blessings in your life.

2) Take a Cleansing bath with a few drops of cinnamon oil or pine oil.

3) Dry off, and go set up your ritual area.

4) Meditate, and cast your circle.

5) The god to call upon to join your circle is the god of Juno, of money.

6) Cleanse, and consecrate your candle/candles, carve the banishing pentacle on the candles. Cleanse, and bless other items you will use, and dash a hint of money attracting herb on the candles.

7) Dash a hint of the money attracting herb, and place the bills or written form of the bills under the lit candles.

8)Ask Juno for what you need. Here’s a simple spell I wrote for this. As well as meditate on you paying your bills in full, and walls of what is stopping them from being paid in full breaking down one by one. Envision this money coming to you, and your debt vanishing instantly.

9) Spell Chant:

“O Great God Juno, who knows of my need, please bring this at full spell. May this be brought in the most correct way for the money I need on this day. I ask of you bring positivity, and banish negativity. Banish this great debt, rid this poverty, and bring prosperity. Bring none of harm as well as myself. This I ask humbly, so it shall be. So mote it be!”

Finally place the bills dashed with herbs in a safe spot so it may not be touched, and meditate further on the issues. Then when you feel drained suddenly snuff the candle out, and thank Juno himself.

Close your circle.

Light the candles once again everyday for 7 minutes or longer until they are burned out, and meditate on the debts banishing from your life, and bringing happiness to yourself. You may chant a spell or prayer of your own words. Once the candles are finally burned out bury them away from your home, or throwing them into a moving source of water.

One last advice about this spell Do good onto others, like help others out when needed, or donate. Good will be brought onto. Finally thank the universe and Juno when your debt is paid off.

Beginning Your Journey and Choosing a Wiccan Name

‘Blessed be’ is a Wiccan greeting. It implies giving the other person, Wiccan or non-Wiccan alike, a harmonious message. However, to Wiccans it may hold a greater significance since they are encouraged to remain in the blessing of the God and Goddess. This would involve thorough and regular immersion in the traditions and practices of Wicca.

 

A prerequisite to becoming a Wiccan involves a study and training period of a year and a day. This rule is important before an individual is initiated into a coven. Many eclectic Wiccans observe it too. Someone who sets out to complete this period makes a conscious decision to understand Wicca to the best of their abilities.

 

To prepare for your study period, gather as many resources on Wicca as you can find. If you are planning to join a coven, usually its members will be able to guide you in the right direction, for their specific tradition. Do not worry if you are choosing the eclectic way; there are many books and websites dedicated to Wicca and Witchcraft. Wiccans like Janet Farrar and Stewart Farrar have written extensive books on various aspects of Witchcraft and Wicca. You may wish to have these in your beginner’s collection in order to help you along your way.

 

At first, you may be overwhelmed by the variety of information available to you. In addition, you may be confused by some contradictions inherent in Wicca itself. However, do not lose your motivation and keep to the path that best appeals to you. Remember, there is no compulsion on this path. As long as you stick to the moral code, there is no right or wrong way in Wicca.

 

You may choose to start your own Book of Shadows during your dedication period. Not only will it help you keep a record and note experiences, it may actually help you delve deeper into the reasons for accepting Wicca as your religion.

 

After the initial study period, an individual may go through a first-degree Wiccan initiation rite of passage. In this ceremonial ritual, he or she is formally accepted into the fold of Wicca, with the God and Goddess as witnesses. It is usually a very emotional rite of passage for the initiate since it formalizes his or her choice to make Wicca a way of life. The first-degree initiation is not an end to studying Wicca. Basically, a person becomes responsible for their growth as a Wiccan. They can start practicing their own Wiccan rituals and casting spells.

 

Similarly, when a Wiccan has gone through a second-degree initiation, they become responsible for their coven. The third-degree Wiccan has the highest level of responsibility towards the entire community.

 

Having a Wiccan or craft name is certainly not a precondition to becoming a Wiccan. Yet many feel the need to have a true name during sacred Wiccan rituals and spell casting. There is special significance attached to a Wiccan name, as it is one’s true or spiritual name. Because of this, it also has great power and should be held in high esteem. The search for a Wiccan name is a conscious yet instinctive process.

 

It is not advised to take up a Wiccan name at random. A lot of soul searching is required before one can choose their Wiccan name. There is a prescribed method of meditation to help a person who is having trouble finding their true name. You should keep up the process until it gives the required result.

 

A standard procedure for intuitively figuring out your Wiccan name is meditation. Searching for your true name within yourself is somewhat like looking for a needle in a haystack. Throughout your life, you have unconsciously piled so many impurities around your true self that unless you go through a thorough spiritual cleansing, you will have difficulty finding a Wiccan name that sticks and works.

 

A Wiccan name is only shared with close and trusted people, which are usually fellow coven members. Coven members actually get to know your Wiccan name because it is used in Witchcraft rituals.

 

Once you are acquainted with the method of soul-searching meditation, you can even use it with the intention of finding your familiar or a spirit animal. This is an animal, like the stereotypical black cat, that is spiritually close to an individual Wiccan. It is believed to be a previous body your spirit occupied. The familiar may fulfill a purpose similar to that of your Wiccan name.

 

Remember, your name and familiar will become part of your overall power as a Wiccan. So, be careful you are choosing the right ones. Also, whatever stage of the journey you are at, send out positive energy daily to help you through periods of spiritual doubt and difficulty.
