The Witches Guide to Friday

Earth MagickThe Witches Guide to Friday

Ruler: Freya, Venus

Colors: Emerald green or pink

Power Hours: Sunrise and the 8th, 16th, and 24th hours following.

Key Words: Love, money, health

It is easy to spot the ruler of this day by its name. In the word Friday, we see the roots of the name of the Norse goddess Freya, a goddess of love and fertility, and the most beautiful and propitious of the goddesses thus the verse “Friday’s child is loving and giving.”

In Spanish this day of the week is called Viernes and is derived from the goddess Venus. Matters of love, human interaction, the fluidity of communication, sewing and the creation of artistic garments, household improvement, shopping, and party planning all fall under the aspects of Friday and its ruling planet, Venus.

Friday’s angels are Ariel/Uriel, Rachiel, and Sachiel. Rachiel also concerns himself with human sexuality and is a presiding spirit of the planet Venus.

On Fridays, the hour of sunrise and every eight hours after that are also ruled by Venus, and that makes these times of the day doubly blessed. These four hours are the strongest four hours for conducting ritual.

Check the local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine your local sunrise.

Festival of Shiva (India)
KALI

Themes: Rebirth; Cycles; Joy; Courage; Hope; Cleansing; Change

Symbols: Flowers; Dance; Iron; Sword; Peacock Feathers; Honey

About Kali: Kali, a Hindu goddess whose name means “time” is the generrix of natural forces that either build or destroy. Even in destruction, however, she reminds us that good really can come of bad situations. If you find your hopes and dreams have been crushed, Kali can change the cycle and produce life out of nothingness. Where there is sorrow, she dances to bring joy. Where there is fear, she dances in courage.

To Do Today: Hindus gather today at Shiva’s temples to honor his celestial dance of creation, and Kali dances with them in spirit. Beforehand, they fast and bathe in holy waters for purification. Doing similarly (in your tub or shower) will purge your body and soul of negative influences. Add some flower petals or sweet perfume to the bath to invoke Kali’s cleansing power.

To invoke Kali’s assistance in bringing new life to stagnant projects or ruined goals, leave her an offering of honey or flowers, and make this Kali amulet: Take any black cloth and wrap it around a flower dabbed with a drop of honey, saying,

Kali, turn, dance, and change.
Fate rearrange.
End the devastation and strife;
what was dead return to life.

Carry this with you until the situation changes, then bury it with thankfulness.

God of the Day for Friday, February 24th is Adonis

IsisAdonis

Greek God of beauty and desire

Adonis was the god of beauty and desire in Greek mythology. He was originally worshipped in Phoenicia (which is now the modern-day Lebanon) but he was adopted by the Greeks later.

He was the son of Theias, the king of Syria. His mother was Myrrha (who was also known by the name Smryna) and she was actually Theias’ daughter. In the myth, Myrrha fell in love with her father and tricked him into having sex with her, which is how Adonis was conceived.

When King Theias found out that his daughter had tricked him he tried to find her and kill her. Myrrha begged the gods for mercy and they transformed her into a myrrh tree.

In tree form, she gave birth to Adonis. At some point, Aphrodite came along and fell in love with him. She protected Adonis and let Persephone take care of him and raise him.

Later on, Aphrodite and Persephone would have a dispute over Adonis because both of the goddesses wanted him and Persephone refunded to give him back. In the end, Zeus had to get involved and settle the argument once and for all.

Zeus told the goddesses that a third of a year should be given to both of them and the other would be for Adonis to decide. Adonis chose to be with Aphrodite for two thirds a year.

Adonis died after being attacked by a wild boar that was sent by Artemis. Artemis was jealous of his hunting skills and wanted to punish him. Another version of that story says that Ares, the god of war, sent the boar to kill Adonis, because he was Aphrodite’s lover.

After the death of Adonis, Aphrodite then let nectar flow over his blood and the anemone flower sprouted.
Roles and Responsibilities of Adonis

From his blood sprinkled with nectar sprung the short lived flower named Anemone and the Adonis river.
He spent one third of the year with Persephone and two thirds of the year with Aphrodite to settle the dispute between the two goddesses.
He was a hunter and was said to have been envied by Artemis which led to his demise.
He was said to be a fertility god.

Appearance and Personality of Adonis

He was said to be an extremely beautiful young man and the most beautiful among men.
Not much of his personality was talked about.

Facts about Adonis

He was a product of incest. Apparently, her mother was struck by Eros instructed by Aphrodite to love his father because of her father bragging that his daughter was more beautiful than Aphrodite.
He was born in a Myrrh tree (his transformed mother).
Aphrodite fell in love at first sight and hid him away with Persephone.
Persephone also loved him as he grew up.
Artemis was said to have killed him by sending a boar.
Other sources say that he was killed by Ares who was transformed into a boar when Persephone taunted him that his beloved had a mortal lover.
He was said to come back to life.
He was also said to be a god of vegetation.
Mostly women worshipped him.
Adoniscries were women’s laments.
There was an Adonis garden adorned with potted flowers surrounding his statue.
His blood was said to have formed the Adonis river which turns to red and fades when he came back to life.

About the Celtic Tree Month of Ash

blessed be1About the Celtic Tree Month of Ash

The Ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior) is one of the sacred trees of Wicca/Witchcraft revered by contemporaries and ancients alike. It is often referred to in verse by the phase “by oak, ash, and thorn,” which is used as a blessing during ritual or to affirm a charge of power in spellcraft. The Druids believed that oak possessed masculine energy and the thorn feminine energy, the polarities of which were balanced and focused by ash allowing the energies to be readily tapped and directed. In folklore it was believed that the fairies could be seen and conversed with by mortals wherever the three trees grew together. The ancient Irish called the ash tree “nin” and its name was given to the letter “N” in the ogham alphabet.

There are about fifty species of the genus Fraxinus, and cultivation has produced and perpetuated a large number of distinct varieties of which the Weeping Ash and the Curl-leaved Ash are the best known. The Common Ash and the Privet are the only representatives in England of the Olive tribe Oleaceae. The Common Ash is a tall handsome tree readily distinguished by its light-grey bark, which is smooth in younger trees and rough and scaly in older ones. It has large compound leaves divided into four to eight pairs of lance-shaped leaflets, an arrangement that imparts a light feathery arrangement to the foliage. The leaflets have sharply-toothed margins and are about 3 inches long.

In April or May according to season and before the appearance of the leaves, the black flower-buds of the previous year’s shoots expand into small dense clusters of a greenish white or purplish colour, some of the minute flowers having purple stamens, others pistil only, and some both, but all being devoid of petals and sepals, which owing to the pollen being wind-borne, are not needed as protection or to attract insect visitors. After fertilization the oblong ovary develops into a thick seed-chamber with a long strap-shaped wing, which is known as an Ash-key (samara). Bunches of keys hang from twigs in great clusters, at first green and then brown as the seeds ripen. They remain attached to the tree until the succeeding spring when they are blown off and carried away by the wind to considerable distances from the parent tree. They germinate vigorously and grow in almost any soil.

The wood of the ash is a valuable commodity, due to the quickness of its growth and the toughness and elasticity of its timber, in which quality it surpasses most other trees. The wood is heavy, strong, stiff and hard, and takes a high polish. It shrinks only moderately in seasoning and bends well after. It is the toughest and most elastic of our timbers and was used in the old days, and still is today, for spears, bows and arrows. Ash wood is used for more practical purposes than that of any other tree, being so elastic that a joist of it will bear more pressure before it breaks, than one made of other wood. Ash wood always fetches a good price being next in value to the Oak and surpassing it for some cases, for it matures more rapidly than Oak and is just as valuable as a sapling wood.

Before synthetic materials became available, ash wood was in endless demand by railways and other works for building carriages, coaches and wagons. It was also used for axe-handles and spade-handles, ladders and carts, walking sticks, hoops, hurdles and crates, and a whole multitude of uses in the countryside for agricultural purposes. It also makes the best oars and the toughest of shafts for carriages. In its younger stages it is called Ground Ash, which is much used for hop poles, for which it was extensively grown. Ash wood also makes excellent logs for burning; giving out no smoke and the ashes of the wood makes very good potash.

The bark of the ash is a grey or greenish-grey colour externally and has numerous small grey or brownish-white warts. The inner surface is yellowish or yellowish brown is fibrous and nearly smooth. Of old, ash bark was used to make quills and was employed for tanning nets. The bark is astringent and together with its leaves has medicinal uses, which fetch prices worthy of the labour it takes to collect it. The bark is collected from the trunk and the root with the latter being preferred. It contains the bitter glucoside Fraxin, the bitter substance Fraxetin, tannin, quercetin, mannite, a little volatile oil, gum and malic acid.

Folklore and Myths:

In folklore and mythology the ash tree has many associations with the gods, such as: Uranus, Poseidon, Thor, Odin, Oceanus, Nemesis, Mars, and Gwydion. The Greek goddess Nemesis carried an ash branch as the symbol the divine instrument of the justice of the gods, the scourge. In iconology she is also depicted with an eight-spoke wheel symbolic of the solar year. The wheel is also a symbol of the Fates who dispensed her justice under and through the ash tree, metering out happiness or misery and ensuring that fortune was shared and not cosseted by the few. If anyone hoarded the favours she had given or didn’t sacrifice some or part of it to the gods, or didn’t try to alleviate the poverty and misery of fellow man. Nemesis would step in and withdraw what was given dispensing justice through humiliation with a scourge made of ash.

In later Greek myths Nemesis was identified as Andrasteia, daughter of the sea god Oceanus and goddess of the “rain making ash tree”. In this aspect her scourge was used for ritual flogging to bring fruitfulness and productivity to the trees and crops. This association with Oceanus the god of the sea through his daughter Andrasteia, connects the ash tree with thunderstorms, which waters the earth and fertilizes the land. The ash tree is said to attract lightening. As well as the ash branch, wheel and scourge Nemesis also carried an apple branch as a reward for heroes.

The ash tree is also associated with Divination, Prophecy and Inspiration. Odin is said to have hung from an ash tree in order to gain enlightenment before reading the runes. In Norse mythology and to the ancient Teutons the ash tree represented Yggdrasill, also known as the World Tree. This was their concept of the universe and revered as the tree of Time and of Life. In Scandinavian myth the first man was formed from the ash and the first woman from rowan.

One of the ritual tools of a Witch is the Broom, which traditionally was made by tying the twigs of a Birch tree around a handle made of Ash with strips of Willow. In folklore it was thought that the Ash with its association with water had command over the four elements. The Birch with its connection to the spirits of the dead drew those spirits into one’s service and the Willow through its connection with Hecate allowed communication with the Goddess. The handle, brush and binding of the broom are also symbolic of the triformis aspects of the Goddess.

The ash tree is known by several folk names: Nion, Asktroed, Jasen Bell and Freixo. It is associated with such deities as: Uranus, Poseidon, Thor, Odin, Neptune, Nemesis, Mars, and Gwydion. Its gender type is Masculine, its planet ruler is the Sun, and its associated element is Fire. Ash is used to attract the powers needed for Protection, Prosperity, Prophecy, Health, and Sea and Water rituals.

Magical Uses:

As is the case with most trees, one of the main properties and uses of the ash tree is that of protection. Of old, a staff of ash was hung over doorframes to ward off malign influences, or ash leaves were scattered in the four directions to protect a house or area, or a garter made from its green bark was worn as protection against sorcerers and physic attacks. Ash was also used as protection from snakebites; snakes have an innate fear of the ash tree and will not crawl over its wood.

The Ash had the reputation of magically curing warts, this was done by sticking a new pin in an ash tree then removing it, prick the wart you wish to remove and then replace the pin back in the tree, repeat the following rune: “Ashen tree, ashen tree, Pray take this wart of me.” (Use a new pin for each wart.)

Carve a piece of ash wood into the shape of a solar cross (an equal-armed cross) and carry it with you when traveling across sea or water for protection against drowning. Healing wands are also carved out of ash wood and healing poppets can be carved from its roots.

Scatter some ash leaves in a bowl of water and place it under a bed over night to prevent and heal illness. The next morning the water and leaves should be discarded outside on open ground then repeat the procedure each evening until well. Leaves can also be sewn into small sachets and worn as health or protection charms. To gain the love of the opposite sex, carry some loose ash leaves in your pockets.

By burning ash wood at Christmas time (Yule) you will receive prosperity and if you want your newborn child to be a good singer bury its first nail parings under an ash tree. However, given duality in all things not all the ash tree merits are good. The ash tree has a particular affinity with lightning, which it attracts. Under an ash tree is not the place to be during an electrical storm.

Medicinal Uses:

The bark of the ash was used as a bitter tonic and astringent, and is said to have been valuable as an anti-periodic. On account of its astringency it was used as a decoction, and extensively in the treatment of intermittent fever and ague, it was also used as a substitute for Peruvian bark. The decoction is odourless though its taste is fairly bitter. It was considered useful for removing obstructions of the liver and spleen, as well as aiding rheumatism of an arthritic nature.

The leaves have diuretic, diaphoretic and purgative properties and are employed in modern herbal medicine for their laxative action, especially in the treatment of gouty and rheumatic complaints proving a useful substitute for Sienna, having a less griping effect. The infusion of the leaves (1 oz to the pint of water) may be given in frequent doses during any 24-hour period. The distilled water of the leaves can be taken every morning and was considered good for dropsy and obesity, and a decoction of the leaves in white wine had the reputation of dissolving stones and curing jaundice. The leaves should be gathered in June, well dried and powdered and kept in well-corked bottles. In some parts of the country the leave were used to feed cattle when grass was scarce in autumn, but when cows eat the leaves or shoots, their butter becomes rank.

The fruits of the different species of Ash are regarded as somewhat more active than the bark and leaves. The ancient physicians had a high regard for ash keys and used them as a remedy for flatulence. In more recent times ash key were said to have the “virtue of capers” and were often substituted for them in sauces and salads, or preserved with salt and vinegar and sent to table as a pickle.

Astrologically ash people (i.e. whose who are born in the month of January) are uncommonly attractive, vivacious, impulsive and demanding. They do not care for criticism, are ambitious, intelligent, and talented and like to play with fate. They can be egoistical but are very reliable and trustworthy. They are faithful and prudent lovers though sometimes their heads rule over the heart but they take their partnerships very seriously. Ash people are also very ambitious in love and business and whatever they be, they wish to be the best.

New Moon + Solar Eclipse – February 26/27, 2017

New Moon + Solar Eclipse – February 26/27, 2017

By Simone M Matthews

During our February New Moon in Pisces we have a Solar Eclipse combined with a number of other high energy alignments with Neptune, the fixed star Skat and the Galactic Centre.

Please keep reading down the page where I share with you the following:

General Meaning of the Energy of New Moons
Energy of our February 26/27, New Moon
Energy of our New Moon Annular (Total) Solar Eclipse
Energy of other alignments – Neptune, Skat & Galactic Centre
FREE GIFT – Solar Eclipse Meditation (AVAILABLE NOW)

What a HUGE energetic week (in fact the next few weeks)…. sharing with you how to make the most of these powerful celestial events ☆
GENERAL MEANING: New Moons

New_Moon_PThe NEW MOON represents the beginning of our 29 day lunar month. During a New Moon, the moon is roughly sitting between the Earth & the Sun, hence the Sun is shining on the ‘dark side of the moon’, the side of the moon we never see. As a result, we cannot see the moon as the side that faces the Earth is not illuminated.

The Moon & the Sun emanate frequencies and these energy waves influence the tides, and all life forms on Earth, including human behaviour / consciousness. In addition, during a NEW MOON, both the Moon & Sun are in the same Zodiac sign… giving an exponential boost or concentration of the energy.

The SUN represents our ‘outer-world’, our identify, our personality, our ego. It represents how we ‘shine our light’ out into the world, the present moment, our yang or masculine archetype expression. The Sun offers us strength, courage and illuminated insight of the Soul.

The MOON represents our ‘inner world’, our hidden emotions, desires, our shadow-self, fears/worries and our dreams. It represents our feelings, our unconscious beliefs, the past and our yin or feminine goddess archetype. The Moon offers us the ability to feel, learn from the past and creatively unlock and express our essence.

During a NEW MOON, the side of the moon that remains invisible to us here on Earth is being illuminated by the Sun. Thus our own ‘invisible’ side, our inner feelings, emotions and desires are also being illuminated during a new moon. During this illumination, we are given a window of opportunity to start a fresh, let go of the energy of the previous cycle and set our intentions, dreams & inner-most desires into conscious action.

The NEW MOON is a great time to set your intentions, write down goals or begin new projects for the forthcoming cycle. Consider sitting in ceremony or personal meditation and affirming to the Universe your intentions & inner-most heartfelt desires for the cycle.

Our February NEW MOON falls in the Zodiac sign of PISCES. Piscean New Moons are very powerful experiences of self-exploration… an opportunity to dive deep into the darker recesses of the psyche and explore the unconscious.

Whilst a heightened sensitivity and spiritual intuitive awareness of a Piscean New Moon maybe a very emotional experience for many, it need not be a painful or distressing experience. If you allow the glimpses into self to emerge with ease and simply trust in the divine unfoldment of the unknown… you open the door to reveal the highest version of yourself.

During this Piscean New Moon your inner-creativity will be heightened (during both your waking & sleep hours) and you may find yourself dreaming solutions to problems in your life or seeing new paths of opportunity beyond your perceived limitations. Allow the Piscean energy to amplify your dreamy state such that it knows no boundary. Don’t ‘play small’ with your dreams during a Piscean New Moon… to quote the words of Einstein: ‘you can’t solve a problem from the same level of consciousness that created it’. So dream big, bold, beautiful & joyously this New Moon in order to create new opportunities from a higher level of consciousness.

Our February Piscean New Moon is being amplified exponentially by the Solar Eclipse PLUS the alignments with Neptune, Fixed Star Sketa & Galactic Centre. Please keep reading down the page for all the details.
ENERGY: Total Solar Eclipse

During this February 2017 New Moon, we also have an Annular Solar Eclipse.

Firstly, a Solar Eclipse is whereby the moon moves between the Earth and Sun, obscuring Earth’s view of the Sun.

And then an Annular Solar Eclipse is where from our position here on Earth, the Sun appears behind the Moon as a very bright ring of light (an annulus or ring of fire) around the dark disk of the Moon, as the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun. From the vantage point of Earth, during our February Annular Solar Eclipse the moon will cover approx 99.27% of the Sun.

Solar Eclipse’s create the potential for huge personal and hence planetary transformations. The energy of a Solar Eclipse ‘obscures’ the now or potential future, and allows you to reflect on the past. Not to drag up old energy, or relive painful events or experiences, but rather to positively reassess where you have been and use this knowledge to re-adjust your path moving forward.

Whilst this eclipse is extraordinarily powerful, it doesn’t have to be a horrendous experience of loss, despair, struggle and inner-turmoil. You have a choice to experience this eclipse with a heightened or awakened vision of divine potential.

Let the Piscean dreamy intuitive states help you to see into the depths of your unconscious let go of all that was revealed during the Lunar Eclipse on the 10/11 February 2017 in order to step through golden doors of new opportunity in the months ahead.

With our New Moon Solar Eclipse aspecting Neptune, Skat & Galactic Centre (discussed below), I feel that this New Moon Eclipse will be the closing of a chapter (or even a book) in many peoples lives and the writing of a whole NEW STORY of awakened beauty and divine potential.

Our February Solar Eclipse will be visible in the Pacific Ocean, South America, Atlantic Ocean, Africa, Indian Ocean & Antartica.

The Sky This Week for February 24 to 26

Wiccan GoddessThe Sky This Week for February 24 to 26

A comet, visible star clusters, and other marvelous things to see in the sky this week.

By Richard Talcott
Friday, February 24

A pair of fine binocular objects shows up nicely on evenings this week. The open star clusters M46 and M47 reside about a degree apart in the northwestern corner of the constellation Puppis the Stern. The two lie about 12° east-northeast of the night sky’s brightest star, Sirius. The western cluster, M47, glows at 4th magnitude and appears as a fuzzy patch sprinkled with several pinpoint stars. Sixth-magnitude M46 shows up as a hazy collection of faint stars that is hard to resolve under most conditions. Although it contains nearly twice as many stars as M47, M46 appears fainter and fuzzier because it lies some three times farther from Earth.

Saturday, February 25

Asteroid 4 Vesta reached opposition and peak visibility in mid-January, but 2017’s brightest minor planet still shines at magnitude 7.0 and shows up easily through binoculars. To find the minor planet, start at magnitude 1.2 Pollux in northern Gemini and then drop 2.4° southwest to magnitude 4.1 Upsilon (u) Geminorum. Vesta lies 1.5° southwest of Upsilon this evening.

Sunday, February 26

New Moon occurs at 9:58 a.m. EST. At most New Moons, our satellite tracks across the sky with the Sun and remains hidden from view. But today, the alignment between the Moon and Sun is perfect and people in the right locales can view a solar eclipse. Observers across most of South America and southwestern Africa will see the Moon take at least a bite from the Sun. The best views, however, come along a narrow path that runs through southern Chile and Argentina before crossing the Atlantic and reaching the coast of Angola. People there will witness an annular eclipse. The Moon appears slightly smaller than the Sun in the sky, so observers along this central track will see a ring of sunlight surrounding the Moon. Because the eclipse is not total, people will need to use safe solar filters to view it directly.

Mars continues to put on a nice show these February evenings. It appears 25° high in the west once twilight fades to darkness, though it’s easier to find by looking 11° (about 1.5 binocular fields) to the upper left of brilliant Venus. The magnitude 1.3 Red Planet lies among the background stars of Pisces the Fish. Although this is normally a rather unremarkable region, it currently also hosts the distant planet Uranus. Mars passes just 34′ north of its 6th-magnitude neighbor this evening, and the two appear within 1° of each other both yesterday and tomorrow evenings. That’s close enough that both worlds appear within a single low-power telescopic field of view. Mars presents a 4.6″-diameter disk while Uranus, despite lying 10 times farther away, spans 3.4″. Neither object shows any detail, bit the ruddy color of Mars contrasts nicely with the blue-green of Uranus.

Wishing You & Yours A Very Blessed Friday and a Very Beautiful Weekend To Come!

witchcraftPagan Ways

Upon my altar a crystal ball,
An athame, candles and chalice tall,
A pagan goddess, a pagan god,
All laid upon my altar cloth,
A bell to help me celebrate,
Offerings placed upon a plate,
My pagan tools I now display,
How I love my pagan ways.

I’ll cast my circle upon the floor,
Then call upon the quarters four,
Earth, Fire, Water, Air,
The God and Goddess may join me there,
I may sing, or I may dance,
I may even dare to chant,
As pagan music softly plays,
How I love my pagan ways.

My ritual over, now time to seek,

I’m feeling light upon my feet,
I’ll walk among the trees and plants,
And search for berries upon the branch,
I’ll feel the breath of natures kiss,
At one with all is total bliss,
I wish I lived in bygone days,
To learn first hand these pagan ways.

I thought you might like to know……

At 3:45 a.m., Mystie’s home burnt to the ground. I got the phone call around 4:00 a.m., and went straight over to her home. There was nothing left. They got out of the house with the clothes on their backs and that’s it. The fire marshall is investigating the fire to determine what started it. Don’t get me wrong, he doesn’t expect arson, it is just standard procedure. In the mean time, Mystie and her son will be staying with me

I don’t know how well you know Mystie or not, she was beginning to take over this part of the WOTC. Then when that happened you would have come to realize what a wonderful person she really is. I grew up with her, she has been my sister for as long as I can remember. Her life hasn’t been easy. She was living in Mississippi when Hurricane Katrina hit shore. She lost everything then. To make matters worse, she was going back to Mississippi to see what was left of her home and she was hit head on by a semi-truck. She had her two sons with her at the time. One of her son’s only suffered minor injuries while the other one along with Mystie was flown to Vanderbilt. I did leave her side and I prayed every night for both of them to return to us. She did recover and like me she does have scars from that wreck she will carry with her the rest of her life.

As much as she has been through, she always manages to have a smile on her face. I thought it was only right to let you know what had happened. If you feel the need to donate something, it would be greatly appreciated. Right now she is wearing my clothes and my son has brought over some of his clothes for her son. Like I said they have nothing. Rebuilding, starting from scratch is nothing I have ever had to do, I don’t know if I would have the fortitude that Mystie has shown or not to keep doing it and doing it.

Please keep them in your prayers,

Lady A

With the Waning Crescent Moon, this is a time for winding down rather than revving up, dear Aries. However, there can be continued tensions to deal with today, making it a real challenge to relax. Work or duty demands your attention, but there can be many different distractions as you struggle with where to devote your energies. Your responsibilities and reputation are prominent in your mind today and continue to be sensitive topics. While you should concern yourself with what others expect of you to some degree now with the Moon at the top of your chart, there is no need to overdo this beyond what you can do at the moment. Try to turn competition or criticism around by using it to fuel your motivation to improve.

Taurus

Taurus Horoscope

Today, you’re thinking in bigger terms than usual and larger issues that concern you come into play, dear Taurus. You are prompted to think about your long-range goals and plans. Looking at the bigger picture often soothes and comforts you, but today, you may feel a little tense about what might lie ahead of you. Uncertainty can prevail, and it’s a good idea to resist the inclination to attempt to control situations to compensate. Focus on what you have to do and save important conversations for a better day. Others may be promising more than they can deliver today, so keep that in mind before you count too much on something. A wait-and-see attitude is best.

Gemini

Gemini

You can be a little secretive or protective of your plans and feelings today, dear Gemini. You are not feeling very trusting right now, and this may be a sign that you are not secure about your own decisions. Even so, there is certainly a fair amount of subterfuge going on now so you may have good reason to keep some things to yourself. Think more carefully before going forward with important projects. The Moon moves into its waning Crescent phase, and this points to the need to wind down in the days before the Solar Eclipse on the 26th. Superficial interactions are likely to feel especially awkward and unappealing now, as you are craving more intimacy and depth to your experiences. Work on emotional self-control today, but do listen to what your feelings are telling you. Try not to waste your time worrying about those things you can’t control.

Cancer

Cancer

Be more on guard than usual about gossip or misrepresentation today, dear Cancer. Confront your fears about past matters so that you’ll be better equipped to handle them if they do reappear in your life. Your larger focus today is to help foster a sense of balance and peace with others and in your personal environment. However, it can take a lot of frustrating trial and error getting to this point – it’s a tall order right now, so don’t get down on yourself if you can’t quite achieve it. It takes two, as they say! Maintain a strong sense of identity while you tend to the needs of others to avoid resentment. If you feel too dependent on others’ schedules, plans, and needs, take steps to change this, but keep in mind that it will take time, so don’t put all the pressure on to do so immediately.

Leo

Leo Glyph Symbol Horoscope

Make sure you get all the facts before making commitments right now, dear Leo, or hold off on the big issues for a while longer. There is a tremendous amount of tension in your communications sectors these days which can play with your reasoning powers. You have a stronger than usual desire today to be useful and helpful, but if you are not appreciated for all that you do, you might feel resentful. The trick now is to do it for yourself first. Even if the task is about helping others, do it because you feel good about helping. While there can be a tendency to scatter your energies, you might end up getting a lot done, largely because you can be quite worked up about things that aren’t going well for you and motivated to set things right again. Today requires some form of clean-up.

Virgo

Virgo Symbol Horoscope

This is not the most open or trusting of days, dear Virgo. The Moon in your solar fifth house of heartfelt pursuits clashes with a number of planets, stimulating doubts, fears, and a sense that you’ll encounter blocks if you go after what or who you want. Signals can get crossed in love matters, and emotions are up and down. Be mindful of what you’re taking on, particularly new projects or commitments, as there may be a reason to regret them later on. There can be intensity in your personal life today, and possibly some moodiness. It can be difficult making a definitive decision, but it may be wise to wait, particularly as we approach a Solar Eclipse which will bring new energy into our lives.

Libra

Libra

Buried resentments continue to pop up today, dear Libra, and you’ll be in the best shape if you can nip those in the bud as soon as possible. People around you are dealing with their own issues and are less likely than usual to intuit your needs, so you may need to find ways to take care of yourself. This is not the most outgoing of days in the lunar cycle, and while you are more emotionally invested in your personal life, it’s an area where there is likely to be more intensity than usual. If excess energy is used positively, feeling frustrated with your domestic situation can light a fire under you to get things sorted out. Look for ways to unburden and simplify your environment and think in terms of lightening your load.

Scorpio

Scorpio Horoscope

You have a tendency to read so much into situations today that you put yourself into a funk, dear Scorpio. It can be difficult to pull your mind out of a spiraling loop today, but it’s important to try to do so. Obsessing over things that have already happened can only serve to bring you down. However, if you need to sort something out, take the time to do so. Keep in mind that this is not the best time to speak your mind – wait until you are in a clearer headspace. Gentle physical exercise may be just the ticket for soothing an exhausted nervous system. Streamlining your work is important now, and it’s likely to become abundantly clear that you need to tune out distractions.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius Horoscope

Emotions do settle a little with the Moon in your solar second house, dear Sagittarius, but the day is not without conflict. There can be some crankiness to deal with today, as well as concerns about your income or money situation. In all likelihood, your fears are blown out of proportion, and the sooner you get perspective, the better. Your appetite for material comforts increases today, but so does your desire to bring in more money. As long as you can find a healthy balance between these two drives, you will come out ahead. You’re fine with going your own way, but things are much easier when others are cooperating, so you may want to wait it out.

Capricorn

Capricorn HoroscopeAim to be as flexible as possible today, as difficult as that may be, dear Capricorn, to avoid letting small things get to you. The Moon in your sign brings unacknowledged feelings to light, which can be illuminating, but with the Moon’s challenging aspects today, watch for overreaction. Pushing or working too hard could be an issue now, and taking on far too many lofty goals at once can wear on your patience. Relations can be a little tense with or among family, and the matter may be about power and control rather than the surface topic. You are especially sensitive right now, and your emotions can swing dramatically. Aim to take undue pressure off yourself now.

Aquarius

Aquarius

Try not to rush matters to a quick conclusion due to impatience today, dear Aquarius. With the Moon in your private twelfth house all day, you instinctively withdraw from challenging or demanding situations. You may be seeking some alone time or extra rest. However, truly relaxing today can be difficult, and demanding people or circumstances may very well find you! Learning, communications, and partnering are areas of big opportunities these days, but you may be jumping ahead of yourself, and in the process, creating unnecessary tension.

Pisces

PiscesYou can feel particularly impatient if left waiting for others today, dear Pisces. At the same time, you shouldn’t be entirely excluding people, as this is the time in your lunar cycle to recognize the value of the team. Instead of waiting for people to sense what you want or need, express yourself and take action. While today can certainly be difficult with cranky energy around you, frustrations experienced now can be lead to new strategies that truly work for you. Try not to jump ahead on new projects if you haven’t yet completed the ones already in place. Give thought to your finances and how you can make important changes that free you from worry and limiting attitudes.

Learn The Tarot

The Magician

Be creative and stay open — your possibilities are endless.

General Meaning

Traditionally, The Magician is one who can demonstrate hands-on magic — as in healing, transformative rituals, alchemical transmutations, charging of talismans, and the like. A modern Magician is any person who completes the circuit between heaven and Earth; one who seeks to bring forth the divine gold within her or himself.

At the birth of Tarot, even a gifted healer who was not an ordained clergyman was considered to be in league with The Devil! For obvious reasons, the line between fooling the eye with sleight of hand and charging the world with magical will, was not clearly differentiated in the early Tarot cards.

Waite’s image of The Magician as the solitary ritualist communing with the spirits of the elements — with its formal arrangement of symbols — is a token of the freedom we have in modern times to declare our spiritual politics without fear of reprisal. The older cards were never so explicit about what The Magician was doing. It’s best to keep your imagination open with this card. Visualize yourself manifesting something unique, guided by evolutionary forces that emerge spontaneously from within your soul.

In the Advice Position

Trust your inspiration. You are smarter than you think.

The card in the Advice position suggests a course of action which will harmonize what you want with what is currently possible.

Have faith in your innate creativity. The Magician advises you give your questioning nature and free-associating mind plenty of room to explore the subject at hand. Behave just as if you were an open-minded and curious scientist. Through this process, you may bring freshness and clarity into the situation that is both stimulating and catalytic.

You do not have to understand it all intellectually. Besides, intuition is your ace in the hole. Respond in a spontaneous manner to what is right in front of you. There is no reason to hold yourself back. Your natural urges are exactly what is needed, and, your ingenuous timing and elegant style will help smooth over any awkwardness.

glitter2Your Lucky Tarot Card for the Week of February 20th

This card represents elements that favor you.

This card represents the dreamer in you, the idealist, the mystic. The Fool desires to do great things, but is often unaware of just how difficult great things are to do. He must always be very careful of the choices he makes, and remember knowledge is his ally. The Fool often symbolizes a new beginning, unrestrained optimism, and curiosity that hasn’t been dulled by time. While The Fool may well indicate a lack of experience or grasp of the pitfalls along the path he is taking, it is equally true that his lack of experience leads him to believe all things are possible, which brings even impossible goals within his grasp.

When The Hanged Man or The Star are among your personal cards, the influence of The Fool may be increased. Having The Devil in your personal cards may diminish the influence of The Fool.

This elaborately ornamental charm, worn by Egyptian women, was supposed to bestow upon them all the blessings of their powerful Hathor, goddess of the sunrise, whose worship was universal in Egypt. Sun in Pisces

It’s time to reconnect with your spiritual side

It’s time to wrap up another astrological year! When the Sun moves into Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac, from February 18 to March 20, it signals the ending of one cycle before the next begins at the Spring Equinox.

And what do you do when something ends, before you begin again? Rest! That’s why the Sun in Pisces is considered a time to dream and heal and regain strength before starting the new cycle.

Pisces is symbolized by two Fish, which we like to call “the fishes with wishes.” The fish are swimming in opposite directions, which is representative of the Pisces paradox. This sign is at once caught between feeling the harshness of reality and the desire for dreamy escapism.

It’s normal to feel more spiritual while the Sun is in Pisces. It’s easier to tap into your intuition and we’re more inclined to follow our instincts and surrender to something greater than the individual self. But it can also be a lazy, daydream-filled period, so we must keep our escapist tendencies in check.

Those born from about February 15-21 were born on the Aquarius-Pisces cusp, and those born from about March 18-22 were born on the Pisces-Aries cusp. Being born on the cusp simply means that you were born during the transition time between two zodiac signs, so you retain some qualities from each sign.

If we can embrace empathy for others without letting their pain make us feel victimized while the Sun is in Pisces, this promises to be a very healing time.

Here’s how to make the most of life with the Sun in Pisces:

What to do: Take care of someone! Pisces is the most compassionate and caring zodiac sign, so they are at their best when doing something kind for others. Adopt this admirable Pisces quality now and use it to ease someone’s pain.

What to say: Something poetic. The dreamy fishes are artsy and creative, so now’s the time to channel your inner Pisces poet and write or speak something beautiful to someone you love.

Where to go: Bed! Pisces can sometimes be called “lazy,” but really they just need a safe place to lie down, close their eyes and dream the day away. If you find your mind meandering while the Sun is in Pisces, give yourself permission to take a sweet little nap.

What to wear: Who cares?! Seriously. Life is not about what we wear, it’s about who we are. That’s the typical Pisces mindset, of course, so if you’re tired of dressing for success, this is a good time to slack into some sweats and forget about fashion while you follow more spiritual pursuits.

What to buy: Anything that will help you feel more connected to your spiritual side. It’s easier to tap into your intuition while the Sun is in Pisces, so shop for New Age healing crystals, incense, candles, Tarot cards and all of Pisces’ favorite spiritual supplies.

What to watch out for: Highly sensitive, compassionate and imaginative, Pisces is at risk of wanting to escape when they feel too much or get caught up in daydreams. Alcohol and drug abuse are common to this sign, so be aware of escapism and try to keep yourself grounded (at least a little bit) while the Sun is in Pisces.

What to look forward to: Healing! By the time the Sun moves out of Pisces, you’ll be rested, renewed, reconnected with your spiritual self and ready to begin a new astrological year!

Polar Ring Galaxy NGC 660
Image Credit & Copyright: CHART32 Team, Processing – Johannes Schedler

Explanation: NGC 660 is featured in this cosmic snapshot. Over 40 million light-years away and swimming within the boundaries of the constellation Pisces, NGC 660’s peculiar appearance marks it as a polar ring galaxy. A rare galaxy type, polar ring galaxies have a substantial population of stars, gas, and dust orbiting in rings strongly tilted from the plane of the galactic disk. The bizarre-looking configuration could have been caused by the chance capture of material from a passing galaxy by a disk galaxy, with the captured debris eventually strung out in a rotating ring. The violent gravitational interaction would account for the myriad pinkish star forming regions scattered along NGC 660’s ring. The polar ring component can also be used to explore the shape of the galaxy’s otherwise unseen dark matter halo by calculating the dark matter’s gravitational influence on the rotation of the ring and disk. Broader than the disk, NGC 660’s ring spans over 50,000 light-years.
