LaQuema Del Diablo

In Guatemala, as part of the Advent season, people bundle up their old belongings and garbage, which is then ritually burned to ward off evil spirits. It is believed that by doing this the people will be purified and live longer.

During Victorian times, this day was dedicated to the evergreen green rosemary-the rose of the Virgin Mary and special plant of Christmas. It was believed that the plant blossomed on Christmas mas Eve and acquired its scent from the garments of the infant Jesus. In English households, the plant is picked on this day and dried for winter potions and potpourris. There was an old saying, ing, “where rosemary grows, the woman rules the house.”
