The Hina Matsuri is celebrated on March 3rd in Japan, the intention of this “Girls’ Festival” being to ensure the lifelong health and happiness o
f young girls. Each household displays a set of hina dolls, representing the Japanese emperor, empress, and members of the imperial court, which must be put away promptly when the festivities are over, otherwise, it is thought, the family’s daughters’ marriage prospects will be harmed. Peach blossoms are also cut and arranged amid the dolls, which is why the Hina Matsuri is also called Momo No Sekku, or the Peach Festival.
Beautiful Blossoms
Peach blossoms symbolize longevity in Japan, so if a Prunus persica tree is flowering in your garden, why not cut a few twigs for your altar or home? Apple blossoms would do just as well, for the apples guarded by such goddesses as the Norse Idun were said to bestow eternal youth upon those who ate them

I will choose my path wisely, from all the options available. I will follow my path unwaveringly.
Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the ancient ones; seek what they sought.
Basho (1644-94)
When we are finding our way, it helps to know the nature of the experience we are seeking – our true north or spiritual purpose. Thinking that our purpose is in a particular goal, such as a certain relationship or job, we may feel lost when that option is thwarted. However, when we realize that what we are seeking is a profound experience, such as deep connection or creative fulfilment, rather than something predefined, we can see alternative ways to live out our purpose. Meditating on the North star can help to clarify the experiences we are seeking. As you gaze at the star, ask “What fulfilment am I looking for?” and let the answers come to you.
