Dog’s Associations as a Spirit Guide

Dog

(friendship, loyalty)

Dogs have long been considered man’s best friend. The dog is loyal to a fault, content with the bare necessities of life, and, like the wolf, protective of home and family. For thousands of years, dogs have been honored for their loyalty. Hermes (Mercury) was frequently accompanied by his faithful dog. Argos, Odysseus’s dog, was the only one to recognize him when he returned from the Trojan War. Dogs have a keen sense of smell, hearing, and sight. It is said they can sense evil and death approaching.

Dog Associations

Direction: North

Elements: Earth

Deities: Odin, Lugh, Demeter, Mercury/Hermes, Ishtar

Use the dog when you feel the need for support from your friends, or when you feel loyalties are divided. During meditation ask the dog to protect you from the negative thoughts and vibrations others send your way.

Cat’s Associations as a Spirit Guide

Cat

(independence, secrets)

The cat is very independent, a mighty hunter, and has many secrets. The cat was worshiped by the Egyptians because of its cunning and ability to purge the house of undesirable elements. Bast, the cat-headed goddess, was considered to be a great protector of women. In ancient Rome, the cat was a symbol of freedom. The cat is known for hiding and being secretive.

Cat Associations

If there is something you need to find out about yourself or others, ask the cat for help during meditation. If you feel overburdened and feel the need for more for independence, invite the cat into your dreams.

Buffalo’s Associations as a Spirit Guide

Buffalo

(abundance, prayer, thanksgiving)

The buffalo was the major source of food for the Plains Indians. The buffalo provided meat, hide for clothing, and hooves for glue. The buffalo was considered sacred in many traditions because it represented the ideal that when all was in balance there was great abundance. When there was abundance, prayer and thanksgiving were offered in gratitude.

Buffalo Associations

Deities: Apis, Cernunnos, Jupiter, Thor, Zeus

Bear Associations as a Spirit Guide

Bear

(introspection, stability, wisdom)

The strength of the bear lies in its ability to enter into a state of hibernation. In this state it is able to digest the year’s experience. The bear gains wisdom through sleep in dream time. When warmth and sunlight return, the bear emerges strong, stable, and with renewed vitality. Bear is strongly protective of home and family.

Bear Associations

Deities: Artemis, Diana, Thor, Cernunnos

The bear will teach you great wisdom. He will also teach you the value of stillness and introspection. When you feel the need for stability, call on the bear during meditation. Ask him to bring you wisdom.

Meditation to meet your Animal Spirit Guide

Meditation  to  meet your Animal Spirit Guide

It has long been believed that humans have a kinship with animals, and that this kinship allows us to draw on their special qualities. When choosing an animal as a totem (a hereditary badge or emblem for a tribe or clan that serves as a personal sacred talisman), you call upon the power of the animal and are drawn into harmony with its strength and power. Totems appear in dreams and bring healing, abundance, strength and power, and protection. Native American Indians believe that when you align your consciousness with that of an animal, that animal will speak to you in a special way, the way of power. This way of power is considered to be very potent. The totem animal then becomes your spiritual ally and safely guides you through life’s trials and tribulations. For example, if you feel the need for more independence, you might want to work with the cat. If you are faced with a problem which calls for swift action, then the horse would be a good choice.

The best way to make contact with your power animal is during meditation. Choose a place where you can be alone for at least 15 minutes. Dim the lights and turn off all outside distractions, including the television, radio, and stereo. Seat yourself in a comfortable chair and relax your body. Begin at the top of the head and work downward.

Tilt your head forwards, backwards, and then from side to side, breathing deeply three times each. Relax.

Continue down through the neck, chest, back, arms and abdomen, breathing deeply three times for each body section. Relax.

Then continue on down through the thighs, knees, ankles, feet, and toes. Check all muscles you can feel and be sure that they are relaxed. If your breathing is even and calm, relaxation will come quickly and easily.

As you direct your breathing, exclude all thoughts and sensations and fix your consciousness totally on the breathing process. Let your mind slip into a semiconscious state and ask for your power animal to appear. When the animal comes into focus, relax and allow yourself to connect with the animal on a mental level. Invite the animal to work with you and give you a measure of its power. When you feel you have absorbed the qualities or power needed, thank your power animal, and return to a full conscious state of mind.

Moon in Capricorn

Wiccan Magic

Moon in Capricorn

The Moon is traveling through Capricorn today. Make a list of goals. Work overtime. Climb higher. Don’t sulk.

We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead with a Capricorn Moon. We are instinctively aware of the limitations of time and motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are more important to us now. We are resourceful and don’t want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a somewhat sober influence, but it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.

The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.

A Little Witchery for Your Mondays

Monday is named after the moon. The Latin term for Monday is Dies Lunae (“moon’s day”); in the Old English language, this day was Monandaeg; in Greek, it was Hermera Selenes. All of these different names and languages translate to the same thing: the “day of the moon.”

Working with the different phases of the moon is an important skill that takes a bit of time for Witches to learn. So why not cut to the chase and experiment with the day of the week that is dedicated to the moon in all of its magickal energies and aspects?

Magickally, Monday encourages the lunar energies of inspiration, illusion, prophetic dreams, emotions, psychic abilities, travel, women’s mysteries, and fertility.

The Witching Hour

The Witches Guide to Monday

Think for a moment on all of the witchery, magick and enchantments that you have discovered. Don’t be afraid to adjust spells to suit your own specific needs. Any gentle, illusory, and dreamy charms and spells can be enhanced when you work on the day of the week that is dedicated to the moon. Mondays are a fantastic day to boost your psychic abilities and to tune in to your intuition and empathy. It also gives you the opportunity to work with a different lunar phase each and every Monday, which means in one month you could work four different types of moon magicks on Mondays. How’s that for adding to your repertoire? You are going to have mad skills in no time at all.

So light up those lunar scented candles and add a little mystique to your outfit by wearing an enchanting lunar color. Wear your sparkling silver jewelry and maybe add a pair of dangling silver earrings or a pendant shaped like a crescent moon. Create lunar potions and philters; make a dream catcher and give it as a gift to someone you love. Burn some sandalwood or jasmine-scented incense today to inspire the glamour and magick of the moon. Slice up a favorite variety of fruit that is in season for a snack or share it with your love and enjoy his or her lunar and romantic qualities. Brew up a cup of chamomile tea, enchant it with a little moon magick, and relax and get a good night’s sleep.

Most importantly, get outside tonight and watch the moon for a while. What phase is she in? What color was the moon as she rose? Why not start a journal and write down at what location the moon rises and sets for a few seasons? This is a great way to teach you to tune in and to become more aware of the moon and the influence that she pulls into our lives. Try calling on Selene for her magickal assistance, and call Thoth for wisdom and strength. Get to know the Norse Mani and the Latvian Meness. These gods of the moon have plenty to teach, and if you allow their influence to cycle through your life, you’ll receive many blessings. Be imaginative, and create your own personal lunar magick and witchery. Go on….the moonlight becomes you.

Today We Honor The Goddess Selene, The Moon Goddess

Book of Shadows

Selene The Moon Goddess

Areas of Influence: Selene was moon Goddess of the ancient Greeks and influenced the lunar cycles. She was traditionally worshipped on the full and new moon.

She was the Titan personification of the moon itself unlike the later moon Goddesses Hekate and Artemis.

Origins and Genealogy: She was daughter of the Titans Theia and Hyperion and had two siblings Helios (the sun God) and Eos (the goddess of the dawn). She had a number of lovers, most famously falling for the mortal Endymion. In this affair she is unable to come to terms with the fact that he would age and die.

A spell was cast on Endymion to grant him everlasting youth by placing him into a deep sleep. This did not prevent the Goddess from visiting him and having fifty of his children (This number represents the number of lunar months between each Olympiad).

This Goddess also had a daughter Pandeia after an affair with Zeus.

This serial seductress is also linked to Pan who gave her the Oxent that drove her chariot.

Strengths: The personification of the moon, passionate.

Weaknesses: Fears abandonment and is unable to be faithful to either men or Gods.

Symbolism

In art this Goddess is shown with a very white face with a crescent moon crown or cloak.

She rides a silver chariot pulled by winged white horses or oxen.

The Full moon.

Sacred Plant: Selentrope.

Roman Equivalent: Lunar.

Selene’s Archetype

The Lover

Represents passion and selfless devotion to another person. It also extends to the things that make our hearts sing, like music art or nature.

The shadow aspect is obsessive passion that completely takes over and negatively impacts on your health and self esteem.

Selene is a seductress and has numerous lovers. Her obsessive love for Endymion’s beauty leads her to place him into a deep sleep to preserve his youthfulness.

Please follow this link to the Archetypes page to discover which other Goddess Archetypes resonate with you.

How To Work With This Archetype

The Lover

You may be drawn to this stereotype if you are looking to attract a new lover or to re-ignite the fire in an existing relationship.

The Lover can also be a useful tool to discover what you are passionate about in life.

On the shadow side you need to ask, whether the amount of energy and time you are putting into relationships, or enthusiasm for projects is excessive? If this continues for too long you are likely to suffer from stress and physical ill health.

Today is Monday, June 12, We Celebrate

Wiccan

Today is Monday, June 12, We Celebrate

Rice Festival (Korea)
KWANSEIEUN

Themes: Luck, blessings, harvest, cleansing, kindness

Symbols: Fish, willow, gold items

About Kwanseieun: This Korean goddess of goodness, courage, and fortune listens carefully to our needs, intending to meet each with compassion. Art sometimes shows her riding a fish, giving her associations with fertility. In other depictions she bears a Wilow branch and gold necklaces (lunar and solar symbols, respectively), indicating the diverse powers she can use in answering our prayers.

To Do Today: In a festival similar to that held in Japan this month, Korean farmers go about the task of ensuring an abundant rice crop today. To draw this abundance and Kwanseieun’s blessings into your life, follow Korean custom and wash your hair today. This cleans away ill fortune. Change the type of rinse you use to mirror your goals. For example, rinse in Kwanseieun’s fertile aspect by using pine-scented water. Making these rinses in very easy. Just steep the desired aromatic in warm water, as you would a tea, then refrigerate and use as desired.

Wear gold or eat fish today to commemorate Kwanseieun and activate her positive attributes in your personality. For example, wear a gold necklace to communicate with more kindness, or wear a gold ring to remind you to extend a helping hand to those in need.
