Where You Born on November 22

Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday!

Let’s hear it for the zodiac’s adventurous Archer

You have a wild enthusiasm for life that makes everybody you know happy to have such a bright and cheery friend.

If you were born on November 22, you are the living embodiment of the Energizer Bunny! Whether it’s learning, adventuring, or loving, you are always craving more — and you never tire of it! You have the potential to live a fun and fulfilling life with endless stories to tell. However, you may also find that your hunger has made you greedy and unable to be content with the things and people you have in life. Your challenge is to find a happy balance. Continue to feed your need to try new things and meet new people but be thankful for who and what you have in life.

At your best: Free-spirited, enthusiastic, impressive
At your worst: Flighty, unsatisfied, detached

More About Sagittarius

It’s your birthday and you’re ready to shout it from the rooftops! It’s not that you’re looking for adoration or a bunch of gifts — nah, that’s not your style. You, Sagittarius, are simply so darned happy and grateful to be on this planet and you want to celebrate the fact that you have another year of adventures to look forward to. For you, life is, has and always will be about the journey. With each birthday comes the opportunity to make that journey even more phenomenal.

A Progressive Party

Exploring your intellectual, physical and spiritual horizons are what make life worth living in your eyes. As a result, you’re always seeking a new way to grow whether through travel, study or a pie in the sky adventure. In addition, you tend to eagerly pursue insight the way other signs go after fame or riches. On your birthday you will most appreciate words of wisdom from a mentor you respect.

You’re zealous, optimistic and brutally honest. You may be short on tact however — especially when someone asks your opinion … or gets you a birthday gift you don’t like. You’re not one to sugarcoat the truth, and for some, that pill is hard to swallow! You might also have a self-righteous streak if you believe unflinchingly in one of your ideologies. Remember that everyone is allowed to have an opinion, and if it’s not in line with yours, it doesn’t automatically mean it’s wrong. On the bright side, you’re filled with faith and a happy go lucky attitude. You know things will always work out and that no matter what life throws at you, you’ll always land on your feet.

Your Daily Cosmic Calendar for November 22

If you were anticipating a fairly straight-forward and easy-to-handle solar entry into Sagittarius (1:03am) on the same day as a powerful full moon (energizing 1 degree of Sagittarius and Gemini at 9:40pm), think again. The cosmos is ratcheting-up all kinds of high jinks as Mercury is the perpetrator of three stressful aspects – 45-degrees to Venus at 5:13am, parallel to Saturn at 8:48am, and 45-degrees to Vesta at 9:54am. An 18 hour void lunar twilight zone in Taurus starting at 2:00am, leading to the arrival of Gemini moon at 8:12pm, doesn’t create a sense of calm. Plus, the monthly lunar union with peace-and-harmony advocate Juno (10:34am) that can often favorably support key relationships may get lost in the shuffle as Mars and Pluto toss in a monkey-wrench via their ornery, 45-degree match-up (5:40pm). Nevertheless, individual and group meditations are recommended when the full moon reaches its crescendo (9:40pm). Send out your healing prayers and thoughts to Mother Earth and beleaguered humankind. Start preparing for the next major celestial occurrence — Neptune shifting from reverse to direct in Pisces coming up this Saturday.

[Note to readers: All times are now calculated as Pacific Standard Time. Be sure to adjust all times according to your own local time so the alignments noted above will be exact for your location.]

The Daily Motivator for Nov. 22: Ways to be thankful

Ways to be thankful

What you reject and despise, wears you down. What you accept and embrace, and can actually be thankful for, serves to empower you.

You don’t have to completely agree with someone in order to be thankful for that person in your life. Though your current situation is far from perfect, there are many things about it to be thankful for.

Instead of rushing to assign blame or hand out judgments, look for ways to be thankful. Enable yourself to see the positive aspects, the opportunities for value.

Rather than plummeting into frustration, despair, or anger, look for ways to be thankful. Give yourself the advantage of a conscious connection to life’s abundance.

Look for ways to be thankful, and you’ll find ways to pull yourself and your whole world forward. Look for ways to be thankful, and you’ll discover value, beauty, truth, and possibilities that otherwise would be hidden.

Look for ways to be thankful, and you’re doing a whole lot more than just being nice. You’re making the whole of your life, and everyone else’s, a much richer and more rewarding experience.

Spirit Message of the Moment: Celebrate Thanks & Giving

Spirit Message of the Moment – Celebrate Thanks & Giving

THANKSGIVING  – A Little History
What’s in a Holiday?: Thanksgiving’s Pagan Roots

In my previous posts on the origins of our contemporary holidays, we learn how many of them have roots in Paganism. The holiday of Thanksgiving is hardly different and it was certainly not the first feast celebrating the harvest.

In school, we are taught that in the year 1621 the Pilgrims established Thanksgiving to share their abundant harvest with the local Wampanoag tribe (“People of the Dawn”) who were a civilization of hunters, farmers and fisherman. Although the Pilgrims and Wampanoagans celebrated the first actual Thanksgiving itself, the tribe had its’ own feast day in which they gave thanks for their abundant crops as they honored Kiehtan, the Creator. Future Pagan immigrants brought their harvest festivals to America as well.

By the time Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a National holiday in 1861, other Europeans had also settled in America and brought with them their own traditions, some Pagan. Harvest festivals were celebrated by European Romans at Cerelia by giving thanks to Ceres, the Goddess of Harvest. Celtic and Anglo-Saxon Pagans celebrated Lughnasadh and Mabon, which as Wiccans we know, is also the First and Second Harvests of the year. The Greeks honored Demeter during the Thesmohoria and the New Englanders’ Pagan ancestors celebrated Harvest Home (the first reaping of crops in August). This was a time for gratitude and reflection followed by singing and dancing, after which everyone enjoyed a wonderful feast.

A special wish for everyone and their families and a very Happy and healthy Thanksgiving! Blessed Be!

Living Life in Thanksgiving

Shanta Gabriel
a message from Shanta Gabriel
Monday, 19 November, 2018  (posted 22 November, 2018)

Dear Ones,

It is nearly Thanksgiving in the U.S., marking the official beginning of the holiday season. Know that in this unique time of the year there is an awakening in you of the spirit of Gratitude. It is the true essence of Thanksgiving. When you can immerse yourself in the flow of pure Gratitude, it catalyzes new abundance in every area of your life. Gratitude can provide an energetic containment field for your heart to open into.

It is a true gift for yourself when you live in Gratitude. The power of giving thanks can help to lift you above the appearance of disharmony so that a new life emerges within you, opening doors to amazing possibilities you never imagined. Your deepest dreams are being awakened now and your heart is being offered an opportunity to create manifestation of these Soul’s longings. When you open to these desires that have the potential to fulfill you in massive ways, an energy begins to work in you that you have never experienced.

You are unlocking the gateway to a new dimension, with thanksgiving as the key.

The creation of new attitudes of thanksgiving in your life attracts powerful streams of light-filled energy to bless all that is honored in this way. When a blessing of thanksgiving is made in any moment, it confers Divine energy upon the person who sends it, as well as the situation being blessed. In challenging times it may seem difficult to find something to feel grateful for. In spite of this, one way to create a positive change in your life is to give thanks for what you have now. You can even give thanks in advance for what you want to create. This allows a shift in your perceptions so that you begin to attract new beneficial energy into your life.

Gratitude is an attitude that can profoundly change your consciousness. When you live your life in thanksgiving, it can affect your being at a biological level, training your mind and body to live in a higher state of health and well-being.

When you find nothing else, you can give thanks for just being alive so your soul will evolve. It is a gift to be in a human body, and your body is a miraculous instrument. Consider the fact that you have a heart within you that needs no conscious assistance on your part to continue beating. Remember that you don’t have to tell your digestive system to do its work.

All of these body parts are functioning in a wondrous Divine blueprint of perfection. When you turn your attention to these systems within your body, when you begin to give thanks for the incredible processes that continue 24 hours a day within you, they will function at a higher level. Your focus of attention with gratitude and blessings will bring more light and strength into your vital organs. For extra energy, consider filling these organs with a healing color such as pink or green, which brightens them with Divine Light. For fun, you can imagine a smile on a body part such as your liver or your heart. This will not only bless your organs, it will lighten your mind.

Your Body and Science

Dr. Emoto in Japan proved that beautiful crystalline structures were created when words of Peace and Love were placed on a glass filled with water. Imagine what grateful thoughts and words of kindness can do to your body with its high percentage of water content. Science has also proven that the cells of the body can become healthier when one has thoughts and beliefs that are positive. The subconscious mind hears all the words you say to yourself and interprets them as truth.

Athletes have used creative visualization as a powerful asset in their respective sports. Studies have shown that the mind makes very little differentiation between the act of physical practice and the mental visualization of a highly trained athlete. It is extremely valuable to remember this and apply it to your own body. The act of giving thanks for your wondrous, healthy, strong and flexible body can lead it to respond in positive ways that assist in creating new healthier cells. Your body contains a Divine Blueprint of perfection that can be called forward into present day experience. It begins with giving thanks for your body right now, just the way it is, and adding the ideas of what you would like to create within you.

When you give thanks in advance for your mind that is clear and serene, for a brain that functions with balance and precision, and especially when you give thanks for the Divine Light continually empowering your thinking processes, there is a positive response within you. Your gratitude will bless your mind and allow it to function at a higher level of vibration. These simple acts not only change your mind, they inspire your emotions to respond with delight.

Imagine these ideas working for you in life and these perhaps unfamiliar feelings will spark a new level of inspiration in your being. Your imagination is an influential tool of empowerment, and it can be used for ill or for the good in your life.

Gratitude is the Attitude that will take you into your Heart

Consider the idea that your thoughts are like prayers reaching out into the Universal flow of life. When you use your thoughts consciously, they become prayers that shift your perspective so you can see a greater picture of what is actually going on in your life. Prayers of gratitude are very powerful, and stimulate an increased flow of spiritual energy into every situation. This force can create miraculous change for good in your life. It may take a little effort to find something to be grateful for when you are feeling down, but prayers of thanksgiving can help create a beautiful shift in your mind when you do so.

It is vitally important for your future to nurture compassion for yourself. For the mistakes you made as you were learning about life, and forgiveness for the person you were in the past. Be grateful for all that you have learned and all that you are. This act is a good beginning for a peace-filled and happy future. You can open new doors for tomorrow with your grateful thoughts today.

No matter how it feels, you are never alone. You are here on earth to remember your connection to the Spiritual Presence in your life. You are meant to live a happy, abundant life with deep fulfillment. In order to do this, it is necessary to step out of the challenges life presents and into the flow of God’s love, which will bring you more creative solutions. There is one place where you can always go to feel the power of Divine Love, and that is in your heart.

It does not matter if you see nothing in your life for which to feel grateful, just the act of giving thanks opens a door in your heart that allows Divine Love in.

Here are some possibilities for prayers that may help you to lift your thoughts and connect your heart to the essence of Gratitude. You can choose one or more that resonate with you and use them as a spiritual practice for the day. Masters suggest 21 days of a practice to create a new habit within your brain.

Divine Presence,

I AM grateful for the Beauty and Power of the living Earth that sustains all life and blesses all who are fortunate to live in this beautiful world. I give thanks that all beings are awakening to these gifts.

Thank you for this day. Help me to see the blessings in my life, and learn the lessons given to me to learn. Show me what I need to know in order to grow into a more kind and loving human being, and take care of my responsibilities with Grace and Ease. Help me to share the gifts you have given me in a way that adds more value to the world.

Thank you for helping me move with great Clarity and Certainty. Thank you for inspiring my heart-centered action in every area of my life.

I AM grateful for physical, mental and emotional Health and Well-Being. I recognize Wellness as my most empowered attribute and it blesses every area of my life.

Thank you for abundant demonstrations in my bank account and the financial ability to save, spend and support others. I AM grateful that my work fulfills me on all levels.

Thank you for my mind that is inspired and creative. Thank you for helping me to be open to new ideas that can bring good into my life.

Thank you for my amazing body that is strong and flexible, and for the organs within it that are functioning with perfection. Bless each cell and fiber of my being so that it is filled with your Divine Light.

Thank you for the forgiveness growing in my heart and the compassion within me for the person I am right now. Help me to also have compassion and understanding for others as they walk their own path in life.

I AM thankful for the new awakenings of Love and Abundance in the hearts of each person embodied at this time. Thank you for helping me to live my life in Harmony and Well Being, and to be a radiant light for Divine Love in the world.

For these and all my blessings, I say, “Thank You God.” and so it is.

May this time of Thanksgiving fill your heart with Gratitude,
and bless every area of your life with Love.

So be it. Be it so. Amen.

I know Thanksgiving Eve Has Passed But I just had to share this one….

Happy Thanksgiving

‘Twas The Night Before Thanksgiving

(Or the Turkey’s revenge, lol!)

‘Twas the night before Thanksgiving
And all through the forest
All the turkeys were gathered
From the richest to poorest

For a meeting was called
To plan their revenge
For all of their loved ones
Who were ever cooked or singed

Now this turkey rebellion
Was long overdue
How would they get even?
And what would they do?

I was there that night
When their meeting adjourned
Keep reading this poem
To see what I learned

This meeting went on
For what seemed like an hour
‘Til a gobbler stepped forth
In their circle of power

Now all the turkeys agreed
To this gobbler’s idea
They’d all eat some exlax
And give them diarrhea

No matter how they cooked it
Bake it or boil it
The humans would spend
All day on the toilet

So, remember this Thanksgiving
As you try to relax
Have plenty of TP
For those sudden attacks

A TURKEY SPEAKS

I have never understood
why anyone would
roast the turkey
and shuck the clams
and crisp the croutons
and shell the peas
and candy the sweets
and compote the cranberries
and bake the pies
and clear the table
and wash the dishes
and fall into bed
when they could sit back
and enjoy a hamburger.

Today is Thursday, November 22

Thursday is the day of the planet Jupiter, dedicated to Thunor(Thor), God of thunder and agricultural work. His parallels in various European traditions are Zeus, Taranis, Perun, Perkunas and St. Olaf. The faith of the Northern Tradition holds Thursday sacred, just as Islam reveres Friday, Judaism the Sabbath(calculated from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday), and Christianity, Sunday. This is why almost all adages about Thursday are positive, such as “Thursday’s child has far to go,” “Sneeze on Thursday, something better,” or “Cut nails on Thursday for wealth.” Thursday rules controlled optimism, energetic growth, physical well-being and material success.

In the Northern Tradition, this is Ydalir, the Valley of the Yews, under the rulership of the wintertime god of skiing and archery, Ullr. Today is celebrated by all music lovers as St. Ceilia’s Day. She is patroness of music, an aspect of the goddess Artemis Calliste, the Lily of Heaven.

Return of the Archer

The sun moves into Sagittarius on or around this day. With regal Jupiter in charge, we may become generous, dignified, and just onversely, though, we may be conceited, wasteful and irrresponsible. The element of fire, combined with the mutable quadruplicity of this sign, makes for warm, magnetic exuberance in our social and romantic life, with the risk of volatile mood changes and restlessness hampering our peace of mind and relationships. For most of us, this promises to be an unpredictable period, with more than its share of surprises.

Role Play

Cecilia, the early Christian patron saint of bards and musicians, is celebrated on this day, which makes it a perfect opportunity to practice the theatrical and role-playing aspects of our Wiccan rituals. Try rehearsing some of your singing and spells in front of a mirror–or are you to inhibited?

On Thursday, November 22, We Celebrate….

Sagittarius Begins (Various Locations)
LEUCOTHEA

Themes: Creativity; Energy; Communication; Balance; Harmony; Change

Symbols: Bow and Arrow; White Items; Milk; Seawater

About Leucothea: In Greek tradition, this woman gave birth to the centaurs and was a wet nurse to Dionysus. Her name translates as “milk-white goddess” alluding to a strong maternal nature. In later times she became a sea goddess, bearing the visage of a mermaid. Through this transformation we see the mingling of the spiritual nature (water) with that of the earth (half-human appearance) to create Sagittarius’s customary energies.

To Do Today: In astrology, Sagittarius is the centurion archer who represents a harmonious mingling of physical and spiritual living. Those born under this sign tend toward idealism, upbeat outlooks, and confidence. Like Leucothea, Saggitarians seem to have a strong drive for justice, especially for those people under their care.

To consume a bit of Leucothea’s maternal nature or invoke her spiritual balance in your life, make sure to include milk or milk products in your diet today. Or, wear something white to figuratively don her power.
For help with personal transformations, especially those that encourage personal comfort and tranquillity, soak in a nice, long saltwater or milk bath today. As you do, ask Leucothea to show you the right steps to take next.

The Witches Guide to Thursdays

Today is the day for prosperity work of all kinds. It can also be used for healing work, whether that is a physical healing of an illness or an emotional healing. Also remember that you have to follow up your healing work and prosperity magick and physical action.

I can’t tell you the number of times I have met new witches who complain to me that their prosperity spell or “I need a better job” spell did not work as they expected. They’ll ramble on and on about how much time and money they spent working their magick….but, alas, they had no glorious manifestation of wealth or fabulous job that suddenly dropped out of the sky and landed in their laps.

Then, when I gently ask them, “Did you enchant your resume or application when you filled it out? Did you do a little confidence-boosting spellwork when you went to apply for the job or went to the interview?” typically they give me a blank, confused stare.

Nine times out of ten, their response is, “You mean I have to go out and actually look for the job too?” Um, yes, my dear, you certainly do. Magick follows the path of least resistance, which means it’s going to manifest along the simplest, quickest route. Get out there and hit the pavement. See what you can find. Times are tough and competition for good jobs is fierce, so you need whatever edge you can get. For folks like us, we’re going to get the edge by using our magick and our spellcraft.

Thursdays have such a rich source of magick for us to draw upon that, honestly, the sky is the limit. This is the day associated with the gods of the sky and heavens, after all. Get to know these deities and add their wisdom and magick into your days

The Witches Must Do List for Thursday

Try wearing some honeysuckle-scented perfume to encourage prosperity. Bewitch someone by wearing deep royal blue or brighten up a dreary day by wearing lucky, prosperity-drawing green. Brew up a pot of mint tea to help increase your cash flow. Try adding a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon to an unscented candle to encourage some fast cash. Bake up a loaf of wheat bread for the family, and celebrate abundance and be thankful for all that you have.

Conjure up a witchy craft and create a philter or two for your magickal needs. Work with the deities and the magickal plants corresponding with Thursday.

How did the energies of the plants of Jupiter enhance your magick? What did you learn by working with Juno, Jove, or Zeus? The truth is that by adding these new techniques and information into your spellcasting repertoire, you will indeed advance your skills, thereby moving up in the ranks to become a more adept magickal practitioner

Just by believing in yourself and working toward creating abundance, health, and prosperity, you have already begun to transform your outlook on life. Put your game face on; think positively. Work with Thor for perseverance and courage, and apply those qualities to your own prosperity spells and healing witchery. Break out the tarot cards; How could you incorporate that symbolism into other spells of your own design?

Use your imagination, check Thursday’s correspondence list, and see what other bewitching things you can conjure up for prosperity magick all by yourself. Call on the gods and goddess of Thursday and bring some positive change, abundance, health, and prosperity into your life!

Moon enters Gemini 11: 10 pm

Moon in Gemini

The Moon is traveling through witty Gemini today. Call, text, send email, write letters. Visit someone you’ve missed. Watch a movie and talk about it at a coffee shop. Get out and about. Don’t sleep in.

Our instincts are to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.

The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, short trips.

Correspondences for Thursday, November 22

Thursday (Thor’s day)

Planet: Jupiter

Colors: Purple, Deep Blue

Crystals: Amethyst, Lepidolite, Sugilite, Tin

Aroma: Melissa, Clove, Oakmoss, Jupiter Oil, Cinnamon, Musk, Nutmeg, and Sage

Herb: Cinquefoil

Ruled by the planet Jupiter and dedicated to Thor, god of thunder and agricultural work. His parallels in various European Traditions include Zeus, Taranis, Perun, and Perkunas.

Magical aspects: controlled optimism, energetic growth, physical well-being, material success, expansion, money/wealth, prosperity, leadership, and generosity.

Thursday is the day of Jupiter, the largest of the planets and said to be the most powerful. Spellcasters would be wise to use this day for attempting wealth, success and prosperity spells.

Thursday is also associated (in Greek mythology) to Thor – Thor’s day – and some even say that Jupiter and Thor are one in the same. Both are strong and powerful, yet wise and just. Try a small prayer to Jupiter before commencing any ritual on Thursday as a sign of respect.

This is the proper day of the week to perform spells and rituals involving luck, happiness, health, legal matters, male fertility, treasure, wealth, honour, riches, clothing, money, desires, business, group pursuits, joy, laughter, and expansion

In the Witch’s Tool Chest:
“Runes for Rituals”

At their simplest, runes are symbols carved or drawn onto some surface or other and most often used as divinatory tools. Many Witches have a set of rune stones. I have three: one set that I made myself out of clay as a project with my first group, one gemstone set that I bought, and my favorite, a beautiful set made out of dichroic glass by one of the members of Blue Moon Circle.

But runes can be used for more than predicting the future. Rune symbols have a power and an energy all their own, and this energy can be harnessed in magickal work as well. Try scratching a rune or two on a candle when casting a spell. Or use a wood-burning tool to etch some runes into your wooden staff or wand. Draw a rune on the paper you write a spell on or in your Book of Shadows

There are a number of different symbols that you can use: the Norse and Germanic runes are most commonly known, but there are also Egyptian hieroglyphics, glyphics, the Theban script alphabet, and a few others. Just pick the symbols that resonate with you, and add their energy to your magick.

For those involved with Nordic traditions, this day is Ydalir, the Valley of the Yews, and falls under the rulership of Ull (Uller Ullur, Ullr). Ull is the Norse God of Wintertime, skiing, archery, and hunting. His name means “Brilliant One” and he is invoked during duels. He is the son of the Earth Mother Sif and an unknown father. Ull has been associated with Aurora Borealis and with the oath-ring; vows on the oath-ring ring were sworn to him. Even though he is seldom mentioned in myth and legend, his cult was widespread in ancient Scandinavian countries

Why Do We Eat Turkey on Thanksgiving?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM T.

Why Do We Eat Turkey on Thanksgiving?

As celebrated in the United States, the holiday of Thanksgiving usually revolves around a bountiful meal. Typical dishes include bread stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and, above all, turkey. How did turkey become the centerpiece of this feast?

It is often assumed that today’s Thanksgiving menu originated in an event commonly referred to as the “first Thanksgiving.” There is indeed evidence of a meal shared between Pilgrim settlers at Plymouth colony (in what is now Massachusetts) and local Wampanoag Indians in late 1621. But there is no indication that turkey was served. For meat, the Wampanoag brought deer, and the Pilgrims provided wild “fowl.” Strictly speaking, that “fowl” could have been turkeys, which were native to the area, but historians think it was probably ducks or geese.

What’s more, the Pilgrims do not appear to have considered this meal a milestone worthy of special commemoration. No 17th-century reference to it exists beyond a letter written by Plymouth colonist Edward Winslow. For the Pilgrims, giving thanks for the autumn harvest wasn’t a new concept. As a tradition with roots in European harvest festivals and Christian religious observances, “days of thanksgiving” were fairly common among the colonists of New England. Throughout America’s colonial era, communities held their own unofficial Thanksgiving celebrations, and few people associated them with the Plymouth settlers.

By the turn of the 19th century, however, turkey had become a popular dish to serve on such occasions. There were a few reasons for this. First, the bird was rather plentiful. One expert estimated that there were at least 10 million turkeys in America at the time of European contact. Second, turkeys on a family farm were almost always available for slaughter. While live cows and hens were useful as long as they were producing milk and eggs, respectively, turkeys were generally raised only for their meat and thus could be readily killed. Third, a single turkey was usually big enough to feed a family.

Nevertheless, turkeys were not yet synonymous with Thanksgiving. Some people have credited Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol (1843) with bolstering the idea of turkey as a holiday meal. But another writer, Sarah Josepha Hale, played an arguably more important role. In her 1827 novel Northwood, she devoted an entire chapter to a description of a New England Thanksgiving, with a roasted turkey “placed at the head of the table.” At about the same time, she also began campaigning to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday in the United States, which she believed would help unify the country as it teetered toward civil war. Her efforts finally paid off in 1863 with a presidential proclamation by Abraham Lincoln.

As Thanksgiving became an official American holiday, a national mythology formed around it. An 1841 collection of Pilgrim writing had referred to the meal described by Winslow as “the first Thanksgiving.” Although Winslow didn’t specifically mention turkey, his fellow colonist William Bradford did refer to a “great store of wild Turkies” at Plymouth that fall, in a journal that was reprinted in 1856. Before long, the cultural links between Pilgrims, turkeys, and Thanksgiving became an inextricable and integral part of American schoolchildren’s education.

From a more practical perspective, turkey has also remained relatively affordable. Although the wild turkey was considered endangered in the early 20th century, its population once again stands in the millions. In addition, modern breeding practices have helped make turkeys both larger and cheaper than ever, thus ensuring their continued place on the Thanksgiving table.

The History of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Turkey

Thanksgiving Day, annual national holiday in the United States and Canada celebrating the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Americans generally believe that their Thanksgiving is modeled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people. The American holiday is particularly rich in legend and symbolism, and the traditional fare of the Thanksgiving meal typically includes turkey, bread stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. With respect to vehicular travel, the holiday is often the busiest of the year, as family members gather with one another.

Plymouth’s Thanksgiving began with a few colonists going out “fowling,” possibly for turkeys but more probably for the easier prey of geese and ducks, since they “in one day killed as much as…served the company almost a week.” Next, 90 or so Wampanoag made a surprise appearance at the settlement’s gate, doubtlessly unnerving the 50 or so colonists. Nevertheless, over the next few days the two groups socialized without incident. The Wampanoag contributed venison to the feast, which included the fowl and probably fish, eels, shellfish, stews, vegetables, and beer. Since Plymouth had few buildings and manufactured goods, most people ate outside while sitting on the ground or on barrels with plates on their laps. The men fired guns, ran races, and drank liquor, struggling to speak in broken English and Wampanoag. This was a rather disorderly affair, but it sealed a treaty between the two groups that lasted until King Philip’s War (1675–76), in which hundreds of colonists and thousands of Native Americans lost their lives.

The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating “Thanksgivings,” days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought. The U.S. Continental Congress proclaimed a national Thanksgiving upon the enactment of the Constitution, for example. Yet, after 1798, the new U.S. Congress left Thanksgiving declarations to the states; some objected to the national government’s involvement in a religious observance, Southerners were slow to adopt a New England custom, and others took offense over the day’s being used to hold partisan speeches and parades. A national Thanksgiving Day seemed more like a lightning rod for controversy than a unifying force.

Thanksgiving Day did not become an official holiday until Northerners dominated the federal government. While sectional tensions prevailed in the mid-19th century, the editor of the popular magazine Godey’s Lady’s Book, Sarah Josepha Hale, campaigned for a national Thanksgiving Day to promote unity. She finally won the support of President Abraham Lincoln. On October 3, 1863, during the Civil War, Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26.

The holiday was annually proclaimed by every president thereafter, and the date chosen, with few exceptions, was the last Thursday in November. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, however, attempted to extend the Christmas shopping season, which generally begins with the Thanksgiving holiday, and to boost the economy by moving the date back a week, to the third week in November. But not all states complied, and, after a joint resolution of Congress in 1941, Roosevelt issued a proclamation in 1942 designating the fourth Thursday in November (which is not always the last Thursday) as Thanksgiving Day.

As the country became more urban and family members began to live farther apart, Thanksgiving became a time to gather together. The holiday moved away from its religious roots to allow immigrants of every background to participate in a common tradition. Thanksgiving Day football games, beginning with Yale versus Princeton in 1876, enabled fans to add some rowdiness to the holiday. In the late 1800s parades of costumed revelers became common. In 1920 Gimbel’s department store in Philadelphia staged a parade of about 50 people with Santa Claus at the rear of the procession. Since 1924 the annual Macy’s parade in New York City has continued the tradition, with huge balloons since 1927. The holiday associated with Pilgrims and Native Americans has come to symbolize intercultural peace, America’s opportunity for newcomers, and the sanctity of home and family.

Days of thanksgiving in Canada also originated in the colonial period, arising from the same European traditions, in gratitude for safe journeys, peace, and bountiful harvests. The earliest celebration was held in 1578, when an expedition led by Martin Frobisher held a ceremony in present-day Nunavut to give thanks for the safety of its fleet. In 1879 Parliament established a national Thanksgiving Day on November 6; the date has varied over the years. Since 1957 Thanksgiving Day has been celebrated in Canada on the second Monday in October.

From All Of Our Families to All of Yours, Wishing You A Thanksgiving Full of Love, Laughter & Most of All Turkey! Happy Thanksgiving!

To You And Yours...

Dedicated to my Mother

Fourth Thursday Of November

Ever since I can remember,
on the fourth Thursday of November,

long before the crack of dawn,
early on that frosty morn,

flurries and leaves in wispy winds,
as our mother’s long day begins.

Placing pumpkins beside the front door,
setting the table for twenty or more.

Into her cozy kitchen she goes,
creating tradition as only she knows.

A muffled clanging in our heads
as we still slumber in our beds.

Then, as if by some magical spell,
spicy, sweet scents begin to dispel.

Aromas in the atmosphere rise,
waking our senses and opening our eyes.

Cinnamon, saffron, nutmeg, and sage.
Stuffing the turkey, she’s setting the stage.

On the stovetop simmering away,
delicious side dishes are at play.

Deep dish apple and pumpkin pie
rest on the windowsill nearby.

Family and friends begin to arrive.
Some a bit tired from the drive.

Children running in and out.
Happy laughter all about.

The smell of turkey sweeping the air.
Thanksgiving time is finally here!

Out of the oven all golden brown,
her turkey is our table’s crown!

Dad, with his big wide grin,
slices the turkey nice and thin.

Smiling with her dimples so sweet,
she knows Thanksgiving is complete.

Now we give thanks to the Gods above
for this bountiful blessing made with love.

Many Novembers have come and gone.
We try to carry her memories on,

but the one thing we can never replace
is mom’s sweet smiling dimpled face.

‘Twas The Night Before Thanksgiving

FALL
‘Twas The Night Before Thanksgiving

Twas the day before Thanksgiving and all through the town
Shoppers were hustling carrying groceries in bags of brown
Leaves of red and yellow falling to the ground
A touch of frost in the air
And low and behold what did I see
My two lovely daughters fair
Mercy me, mercy my
What is this tears I do fear
Bags were packed and hearts were broken
Not even a good bye token
No worries my girls it will be alright
We will prepare our dinner and toast to love lost
Let’s get a little tipsy if just for tonight
But not too much for in the morning we need not pay the cost

Cans were opened and packages emptied complete
Along with the bottle of Belvedere
Salt and pepper if you please
Careful not too much or you’ll sneeze!

Suddenly there was a sound
I jumped to feet and almost hit the ground
And to my surprise it was just the alarm clock ringing
It’s four am and the bird must go in!
And all through the house all could be heard was Trace Atkins singing,
Your one hot mama

So wash, cut, peel, and prepare
One more sip do I dare?
With a tear stained shoulder and a loving heart
I checked on the two broken hearted gals
As so sweetly they slept
No worries girls, I whisper as I closed the door
Mama will always be your pal no matter what and that will never depart

Back to the bird stuffing and all
I thanked the Gods as I laid down my head or did it fall?
For healthy safe daughters but can you just do one more thing, a simple wish
For Yule let the rest stay together and find new loves for the two
For this Inn is getting way too full!

Good Wednesday Morning My Precious Brothers & Sisters!

Good Morning
Good morning to all our brothers & sisters of the Craft! I hope you are having a very safe & blessed day. I know most of y’all are getting ready to travel or cooking that turkey, which ever you might be doing be safe. Yes, be safe in the kitchen especially. Heck I can catch a pan on fire by just boiling water. Just kidding I ain’t that bad of a cook.

Since we are now doing our best to operate 7 days a week, we need to take the day off. The reason being is to stock our shelves full of merchandise for this weekend’s sales, hopefully. We have tons of new merchandise and we have the store set so you will save 25% on all of your items in your shopping cart. The price will not show any difference while it is in your cart. When you get to check out, enter the code “Black Friday,” and instantly all your merchandise will be marked down 25%. So if you buy two items, both items will automatically be marked down 25%. If you buy three, all three will be marked down 25%. Each item in your cart will be marked 25% guaranteed. You can save some money on a sale like this. Also this will probably be the only time, we do this. I know we have done something similar to this before but I believe our customers got discouraged. They expected the discount to apply the minute the merchandise hit the cart. No, have patience, go to the check out, enter the code and watch each of your items automatically be reduced by 25%.

We hate to take the day off especially since things are going so well here but we have to support the WOTC one way or another. I know we have had some generous donations but we don’t want to have to depend on you to support us continuously. So please understand why we are taking the day off,  to save you money.

We will be back tomorrow on Thanksgiving to resume our regular posts.

Well if I don’t get it in gear, we won’t never get that merchandise on the shelves for you tomorrow. The next post will explain the sale we are having fully. I hope everyone has a very beautiful Wednesday. If you are traveling, be safe and we will see you tomorrow. Till then….

Love ya,

Lady of the Abyss

In case you want today’s horoscopes and a few other tidbits, I will be doing some brief postings on The Commentary Gazette. The reason I am posting over there is because it is faster and quicker. I don’t have to post as much there as I do here. I feel like y’all are special and deserve the best I can give you. Later on this afternoon, I will be wrestling with a huge ring of bologna to see if I can shape it into a turkey for the boys. Wish me good luck!

Coven Life will be Taking a Short Break

We will be back to posting articles and other things on Saturday because of Thanksgiving in the US. We will be answering all emails between Saturday and Sunday. Lady Beltane has family starting to arrive today for the holiday weekend some of whom she has not seen in over three years.

There might not be anything up or emails anaswered next Tuesday because Lady Beltane is having knee surgery very late afternoon on Monday.

I will try to get posts scheduled for these days but please do not expect it.

Try to find time to make a list to remind yourself of all the things in your life over the past year you have to be thankful and grateful for. If you want please share them below in a comment.

From all the staff at CL we wish you and your families a loving, fun, and blessed Thanksgiving

Explanation: Last Sunday when the Moon was young its sunlit crescent hung low near the western horizon at sunset. With strong earthshine it was joined by Saturn shining in the early evening sky for a beautiful conjunction visible to skygazers around our fair planet. On that clear evening on a hill near Veszprem, Hungary mother, daughter, bright planet, and young Moon are framed in this quiet night skyscape taken with a telephoto lens. Of course the Moon ages too quickly for some, and by tonight the sunlit part has reached its first quarter phase. This weekend skygazers spending quality time under Moon and stars might expect to see the annual rain of comet dust otherwise known as the Leonid meteor shower.

Your Daily Planet Tracker for Nov. 20: Mars in Pisces

Sensitive, Creative, and Easygoing

Now Until December 31, 2018

Assertive Mars can seem out of place in watery Pisces, a sign of diffusion. It may be more difficult to focus our initiative during this transit, especially if we aren’t feeling inspired. That’s Pisces’ influence, because this is a sign that needs to have a cause or greater purpose to be motivated to take action.

The complexity of this transit lies in the fact that while Mars is in Pisces, he’ll need to adjust his Martian ways to accommodate a style that Pisces is comfortable wearing. This is not an easy task when you realize that Pisces is all about faith, compassion, healing those who suffer, and unconditional love. So, how does Mars put up his dukes to fight when he’s wearing a pair of angel wings? In a word: gingerly.

When Mars is in Pisces

While Mars moves through soft and ethereal Pisces, it doesn’t necessarily mean our drive will disappear into thin air. After all, Mars is still Mars. Although we may have more of an urge to dream and use our imagination during this transit, Mars in Pisces can move mountains in a subtle way when we realize we’ve been given a cosmic green light to direct our energy toward inspired (Pisces) action (Mars).

Mars in Pisces works wonderfully to combine dynamism and compassion. Mars is able to push gently, express itself creatively, and fight for a higher purpose when it’s in this Water sign. There’s no better time to move forward with a creative pursuit or become the leader of the pack when it comes to a charitable cause. We can save the whales, feed the homeless, fight for the rights of the abused, and so much more during this incredible transit.

However, we need to watch where our passions take us while Mars moves through Pisces. This pairing can manifest as blindly lashing out or indiscriminate anger. There are many noble causes we can funnel our energy into, which is why we need to make sure we have a clear target in sight so we don’t simply flail about.

Universal Pisces often touches the artist within us. This is because Pisces knows that creative forms of expression can be so much richer than ordinary communication. So when Mars transits through this sign, we’re reminded that we all need channels to take us beyond the boundaries of our mundane perspectives.

If you were born with Mars in Pisces

Having your Mars in Pisces is like living on two sides of the same coin. This is the ultimate combination of sensitivity and potency. Think of a gentle giant. Think of the peaceful warrior. That’s what it’s like having your Mars in Pisces.

“Just go with the flow” are probably words you live by as someone with their Mars in Pisces. You’re not one to try and control every outcome, or obsesses about things that are out of your control. Instead, you like to sit back and let the events of your life unfold naturally. Just like a fish, you ride the waves as they come.

Having Mars in this area of your chart gives you an affinity for the arts or similar outlets that allow you to express your creative side — and it’s important that you do. If don’t have somewhere to release the inspired thoughts and passion bubbling up inside of you, it can lead to passive-aggressive behavior. So break out those paintbrushes, get out your guitar, or snap a few photos. You’ll be better off for it.

Your Mars in Pisces makes you the ultimate romantic! You love the rush of butterflies in your stomach after a great first date, or getting lost in fantasies of “happily ever after.” Relationships are about much more than just physical passion to you — you also need an emotional and spiritual connection that helps you fully merge with another person. Your acute sensitivity means that you’re able to easily pick up on what your partner wants and needs, in and out of the bedroom.

You’re a lover, not a fighter! Those born with their Mars in Pisces don’t often display outbursts of anger, preferring a more non-confrontational approach to life. You’re a pacifist who looks at the world through a compassionate lens, trying to understand why people behave the way the way they do rather than getting upset. This is one of the reasons you’re often rooting for the underdog.
