Let’s Talk Witch – MEDITATION

MEDITATION

Meditation is an excellent method of refining your awareness and your ability to sense and control energy. It’s a method of managing stress, which can interfere with your ability to channel energy. It smoothes the rough energy flowing through our lives into calmer, positive energy.

Most people think of meditation as sitting cross-legged with their eyes closed, trying to think of nothing. While this is certainly a valid interpretation, there are actually many different kinds of meditation. Most practices may be classified as one of two kinds of meditation:

Active Meditation: This is when you allow an object to evoke associations in your mind as you focus on it. Associations can include such things as sounds, dialogue, memories, and even interaction with images.

Passive Meditation: This is when you don’t allow your mind to wander, focusing your visualization upon only the object of your meditation.

There are several reasons to meditate. The opportunity to quiet our minds allows self-discovery, healing, insight, the re-establishment of emotional balance, and it encourages positive change. Meditation provides the opportunity to listen to our souls and bodies without the distraction of mental chatter, or stream of consciousness. It can be a very spiritual practice. Edgar Cayce once said, “Prayer is talking to God. Meditation is listening to God.”

The benefits of meditation are legion. It creates increased awareness of the self and the environment; it provides a time of inner silence, which is important for physical, mental, and emotional health; it creates a better energy flow for easier and more efficient living; it enhances personal energy for use in spiritual practice; and it conditions the mind through mental exercise.

Why exercise your mind through meditation? Everything begins with mind power. Even physical action originates with a thought. You’ve already discovered the importance of visualization and a clearly defined goal in spellcasting. Meditation helps hone these skills.

There are four basic requirements for meditation: a quiet environment to eliminate distractions; a comfortable position allowing complete relaxation of the physical body; a few moments spent relaxing to start; and a “mental device” to help block stream of consciousness generated by the waking mind, often called a mantra. That mental chatter, known as the stream of consciousness, is always present; you just notice it more when you try to meditate.

When is the best time for you to meditate? Take a moment to think about what the quietest time of your day is, or when you’re least likely to be disturbed. That’s an ideal time. Make sure the phone is off the hook, and that the TV and radio are turned off. Make sure you leave yourself enough time for preparation, for meditating, and for slowly coming out of the relaxed state. Create your ideal relaxed environment by selecting gentle music, soft lighting, and scents that calm you.

How often should you meditate? Remember that meditation is exercise, just like going to a gym, except this is a mental workout. Don’t overdo it. And have patience: we frequently become frustrated with a practice such as meditation, because we expect instant change in the twenty-first century. Meditation is a slow process by which the mind is trained. It’s better to meditate for ten minutes per day than for one hour per week. Like physical exercise, regular workouts are more effective than longer, fewer sessions.

Posture is important in any exercise, and being aware of your body is part of the work of meditation. Your physical state reflects your emotional state, so logically, your emotional state is also capable of influencing your physical state. While you may be tempted to lie down to meditate, be aware that your mind associates this position with sleep.

When sitting, keep your spine erect by imagining a string running all the way up your spine and out of the crown of your head, pulling you taut. This allows your energy to flow unimpeded throughout your body.
Relax your jaw; allow your head to float over your neck. Don’t strain your head forward or force it backwards.

Allow your arms to rest gently at your side or on your lap. Do not cross your arms or fold your hands.

Let your feet contact the ground, preferably flat.

If something happens during your meditation, accept it; look at your response objectively, and don’t leap to judge yourself. You have the ability to choose how to respond to things like annoying little itches, thoughts of inadequacy, and physical discomfort.

Monday Is A Day of Witchery, Magick and Enchantment

Native American Comments & Graphics

Monday Is A Day of Witchery, Magick and Enchantment

Think for a moment on all of the witchery, magick and enchantments that you have discovered. Don’t be afraid to adjust spells to suit your own specific needs. Any gentle, illusory, and dreamy charms and spells can be enhanced when you work on the day of the week that is dedicated to the moon. Mondays are a fantastic day to boost your psychic abilities and to tune in to your intuition and empathy. It also gives you the opportunity to work with a different lunar phase each and every Monday, which means in one month you could work four different types of moon magicks on Mondays. How’s that for adding to your repertoire? You are going to have mad skills in no time at all.

So light up those lunar scented candles and add a little mystique to your outfit by wearing an enchanting lunar color. Wear your sparkling silver jewelry and maybe add a pair of dangling silver earrings or a pendant shaped like a crescent moon. Create lunar potions and philters; make a dream catcher and give it as a gift to someone you love. Burn some sandalwood or jasmine-scented incense today to inspire the glamour and magick of the moon. Slice up a favorite variety of fruit that is in season for a snack or share it with your love and enjoy his or her lunar and romantic qualities. Brew up a cup of chamomile tea, enchant it with a little moon magick, and relax and get a good night’s sleep.

Most importantly, get outside tonight and watch the moon for a while. What phase is she in? What color was the moon as she rose? Why not start a journal and write down at what location the moon rises and sets for a few seasons? This is a great way to teach you to tune in and to become more aware of the moon and the influence that she pulls into our lives. Try calling on Selene for her magickal assistance, and call Thoth for wisdom and strength. Get to know the Norse Mani and the Latvian Meness. These gods of the moon have plenty to teach, and if you allow their influence to cycle through your life, you’ll receive many blessings. Be imaginative, and create your own personal lunar magick and witchery. Go on….the moonlight becomes you.

Monday

Native American Comments & GraphicsMonday

In the word Monday, we can see part of the word Moon. In the romance languages such as Italian or Spanish, this day of the week is called Lunes and clearly relates to the word lunar.

On Mondays, a variety of magick may be worked. Because Monday centers on the energies of the Moon, things like psychism, dreams, feminine energy, health, success in spiritual pursuits, domestic matters, and things of family origin are especially important this day.

Mondays are best for love magick and anything concerning home or family, thus old saying, Mondays child is fair of face, which seems clearly to relate to the themes of love and health.

Angels of Monday are Gabriel, Arcan, Missabu, and Abuzaha. Arcan is known as the king of the angels of air and the “ruler” of Monday. Abuzaha (Abuzohar) serves Monday, and is very responsive to invocations and ritual magick. Missabu is a ministering angel of Arcan.

Check whether the moon is waning or waxing to determine what your spell will be. During waning moons, do spells to rid yourself of obstacles or for wisdom and protection. During waxing moons do magic for increase of any kind or to draw something into your life.

On Mondays, the best hour to work is moonrise. Get this information from your local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac.

Eat A Lot of Food, Shoot Off A Bunch of Fireworks & Have A Terrific 4th!

Well at least I did get a little done, no thanks to the herb snatching woman. When we first moved out here the whole neighborhood got together to celebrate the 4th. That tradition died out just as it came my turn to host the annual party. They all voted (which I didn’t know a thing about) and decided they wanted to start that tradition back up. Since I was next in line, I got a phone call from one of my neighbors telling me about it and where it was going to be. I was left speechless.

Anyway, we all get together, grill hamburgers and hot dogs, play volleyball and basketball. Everyone bring a dish and helps out on the food, thank goodness. They also bring lots of outdoor furniture and the outdoor games they want to play. I know the first year I went to one of these outings, I broke my ankle. Dumb ass was playing volleyball and stepped right in a hole and snap went the ankle. So I was in a cast for a few weeks over that. But anyway back to the story, it is just like a huge country block party. The only thing I dread is them shooting off the fireworks. They put a whole in the side of my house, almost had a bottle rocket go through my radiator and if a neighbor hadn’t pushed me out of the way, my eye would have been put out. See what fun, I have to look forward too. They are suppose to start showing up around 2:00, anybody got any Prozac, lol!

The house is already cleaned up, all I have left to do is to throw on some make-up real quick and comb my hair. Then just wait for all my neighbors to arrive. Can’t wait! It is funny how you want to beat the crap out of a few all year long, then when a community get together happens, you are all lovey dovey, hmm.

I am off to get the party started. I hope everyone has a very wonderful 4th of July. Enjoy the food, enjoy the company and enjoy the fireworks.

Stay safe, my sweets,

Till Tomorrow,

Love ya,

Lady A

Get a jump on tomorrow,

Your Horoscopes for Sunday, April 5th

 General Horoscope

Emotional currents intensify as we approach tomorrow’s powerful Sun-Pluto opposition. However, our passions run into resistance from the stern Moon-Saturn square this morning and a constrictive Sun-Saturn alignment late tonight. Meanwhile, an enthusiastic Mars-Jupiter dance encourages us to respond in a positive manner. The Moon’s shift into intuitive Pisces at 10:22 am EDT drives home the realization that there’s more going on than meets the eye.

Aries Horoscope

(Mar 21 – Apr 19)

You have too many options to choose from today because you are not restrained by reality. Although your fantasies might seem like pipe dreams to others, you’re capable of extraordinary accomplishments now if you can focus on your ambitions. Nevertheless, it’s prudent to maintain a practical perspective in spite of your penchant for daydreaming. Keeping your feet on the ground gives you the necessary traction to reach for the stars.

 Taurus Horoscope

(Apr 20 – May 20)

Your desires are pulling you into new territory while your common sense holds you in your current position. You’re motivated by your innate need for emotional security, but you are increasingly intrigued by the distant horizon. Even if you choose to explore the unknown today, don’t abandon your present routine, especially if someone is counting on you. Luckily, there’s no reason to turn your life upside down in order to make substantial progress toward the future. Act strategically and the adventure awaits.

Gemini Horoscope

(May 21 – Jun 20)

You’re naturally talented at assimilating information and turning it to your advantage. However, it’s not advisable to grow too attached to thinking your way through every problem because logic is a trap of its own. Don’t rely solely on rational analysis now; instead, take a different path into your future by embracing your intuition. Sometimes, having faith in the process is more useful than having all the facts. Follow your intuition and everything will be alright.

Cancer Horoscope

(Jun 21 – Jul 22)

You are quick to retreat into your fantasies today as your thoughts drift into an imaginary dimension where you are no longer bound by facts. Although everything is possible in your imagination, you still can’t avoid close friends and relatives who keep drawing you back to the present moment, making it impossible for you to fully escape. Accept that you can live in two worlds now while you seek balance between objective circumstances and your subjective inner life. Juggling your dreams with your obligations is a trick you must master.

Leo Horoscope

(Jul 23 – Aug 22)

Your cool demeanor begins to fade today as you’re lured into deeper emotional realms. Although your interpersonal relationships can be a source of concern, you don’t need to let your uncertainty lead you down a path of self-doubt. Tossing out your old assumptions gives you a new lease on life. But don’t make any significant changes yet; instead, be content with integrating your current lessons into what you already know. Everyone is a student when it comes to matters of the heart.

Virgo Horoscope

(Aug 23 – Sep 22)

You are highly motivated to improve your daily regimen now, but could get sidetracked worrying about the impact your changes might have on others. Obviously, being sensitive to those closest to you is important. Instead of just imagining the consequences of your actions, make a list of all the pros and cons. Preemptively discussing the most significant potential problems now may be enough to minimize any possible negativity before it manifests. A stitch in time saves nine.

Libra Horoscope

(Sep 23 – Oct 22)

You may be bewildered about which chores you should do today, leading you to believe there’s more to life now than finishing tasks. If you were planning on completing a project around the house, you suddenly could change your mind and decide that it’s more critical to give yourself a day off. If you have trouble concentrating, try a bit of physical exercise to expend your excess energy before you settle down to work. Ultimately, if you can slip into a creative flow and be productive in some way, you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to get back on track.

Scorpio Horoscope

(Oct 23 – Nov 21)

The intensity in your relationships continues to mellow, but you still can’t totally control all your reactions to what happens in your immediate environment. Although you’re not looking for a fight, you don’t want to hide the facts as you see them, either. Unfortunately, your unwillingness to play games now could make you seem less compassionate. Don’t judge yourself harshly if you prefer nothing but the truth. Be kind; your uncensored honesty is appreciated more than you know.

Sagittarius Horoscope

(Nov 22 – Dec 21)

You can’t help but second-guess a recent decision, as today’s events test your ability to maintain your integrity. You might know what’s right in your heart, even if it doesn’t necessarily agree with your logical conclusion. Making a choice may be particularly stressful now. However, going along with the majority is the right thing to do if you feel like part of the family or a valuable member of the group. Determine what choice you can live with and then stick with it, no matter what.

Capricorn Horoscope

(Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Although you might think you’re being sensitive to the needs of others now, you could railroad right over their protests without even realizing it. The spacey Pisces Moon visits your 3rd House of Communication this weekend, encouraging you to ramble on about your plans for the future. Conversations are fine, but all talk without follow-through doesn’t really get you anywhere. It’s great if you are eager to share your thoughts as long as you know when it’s wise to just get to work.

Aquarius Horoscope

(Jan 20 – Feb 18)

You’re quite clever when it comes to communicating your ideas efficiently, but don’t put too much stock in finding a verbal solution to a social situation today. Your willingness to present a softer and gentler side of your personality now is a mixed blessing, for it also allows you to evade an important issue by dancing around it. Acknowledging your vulnerability is more admirable than acting like a know-it-all. When you admit that you don’t have all the answers, then others feel like they have something constructive to offer you for a change.

Pisces Horoscope

(Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Your sensitive nature is evident in all your interactions now that the reflective Moon has returned to your emotional sign. However, you may be so in touch with your dreams today that you’re also acutely aware of the gulf between your current circumstances and your ideal life. Practicing random acts of kindness dispels discouragement and enables you to keep your heart open. As you make a plan to help others, remember that you’re also choosing your future. Thankfully, the choice is all yours.

Aries

Aries Horoscope
Aries

Romance, social relations, comfort, and finances are starred for you today, Aries. You are magnetizing good things to you quite naturally now. Interactions tend to be easy, smooth, kind, and helpful. Socially, you may be at the right place at the right time. Complicated problems seem to be easier to understand when you feel supported and approach them in a relaxed manner. You could be expressing your feelings and ideas both with the same ease. This is unlikely to be a productive time for work, but can be wonderful for taking a break and enjoying good company.

Taurus

Taurus

Home and family matters can be quite easy and smooth-running today, Taurus. There can be good news or promising developments with house or financial affairs, an exciting new purchase for the family, or a sense of abundance now. There can be some restlessness today that stems from an unsatisfied or unrecognized need. This type of feeling often leads to self-indulgence, which of course doesn’t resolve things. Get into better touch with what it is you feel is missing. However, this should be a good time for family and relationship matters, as well as helpful, happy conversations.

Gemini

Gemini

You are communicating your needs quite effectively today, dear Gemini, but it’s also a strong time for presenting your ideas. Personal appeal is boosted today, as your ruler, Mercury, is in your sign and forms a nice angle with pleasing Venus. There could be news or a communication that is warm, pleasant, and promising. You can feel understood, cared for, and supported as a result. You might be looking into a new idea or discovering a new interest. The Moon is in your adventure sector all day, supporting and enhancing your curiosity and encouraging you to think in big, happy terms.

Cancer

Cancer

It’s a little easier than usual to discuss private or tricky topics with more rationality and readiness, dear Cancer, as you are seeing emotions from an intellectual perspective. This can also be a good day for bringing intuition and aesthetic sense to practical matters. You might come up with interesting ideas about how you can improve your financial state. You are more inclined to pay attention to unusual signs or symbols, and these can factor into decisions now. There is a playful quality to conversations, and politeness or kindness, which is especially pleasant for you right now. Past love can come to mind or resurface in a significant way.

Leo

Leo

With Venus in your sign these days, dear Leo, you could find that people in general are appreciating the qualities that come very naturally to you. Others are showing interest and seem to be drawn or attracted to you more than usual. You might also be especially in touch with the gentler, more receptive side of your nature. Today is good for sharing ideas, personal thoughts, feelings, and memories. You can be particularly interesting and convincing. You have a stronger sense than usual about what ideas have true potential for success in the long term.

Virgo

Virgo Symbol/Glyph
Virgo

While you’ve been in a trend of taking stock of your emotional and social life more than pursuing it directly, dear Virgo, this is a good day for spending time with others, sharing your ideas, or simply joining in and doing most of the listening. Today is strong for sharing personal matters with a trusted friend, and for coming to an understanding with someone or with a matter from the past. It’s also a good day for intuition on business and financial matters. There can be a subtle communication of romantic interest from someone today. There can be a sudden impulse to contact someone, or you can be the recipient of surprising contact.

Libra

Libra Glyph-Symbol
Libra

You have a stronger desire than usual to bring a spirit of true friendship and acceptance to your relationships, dear Libra, but also a loving, warm quality to your friendships. It’s easier than usual to “win” friends with an easygoing, charming, and open manner. Friends are drawn to you. Today is particularly strong for friendships as well as romance, and mending broken fences. People are showing definite interest in you. You have been discovering your own unique set of truths and beliefs recently, and today you’re especially eager to share them. You can feel very hopeful about the future now.

Scorpio

Scorpio Symbol Glyph
Scorpio

This can be a good time for enhancing your reputation, learning things that help you in your career, and talking about plans for the future or long-term goals, dear Scorpio. People may be speaking highly of you. It’s a generally good day for making business decisions or for fact-gathering in casual ways. A partner may be especially conversational. You are more aware of public sentiment and what others think of you when you are making decisions. When it comes to private or personal matters, you’re more inclined to discuss them rationally and naturally.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius Glyph Symbol
Sagittarius

It’s a strong day for connecting with others, and especially on one-to-one levels and romantically, dear Sagittarius. Even so, good communication skills positively affect all areas of life now. A feeling of camaraderie with a special someone can lift your spirits and make you feel that you’re moving forward. You may be feeling some inner restlessness that, if left unchecked, could lead you to push others’ boundaries. Identify the source of this so that it doesn’t drive your behavior. Otherwise, make extra time for people you care about today.

Capricorn

Capricorn Symbol/Glyph
Capricorn

Love is easily expressed and attracted today, dear Capricorn, although you’re inclined to show your feelings through quiet support rather than through showy means. Your intuition regarding health or work methods is strong now. Perhaps because you may be breaking the routine a little, you are able to see regular things in new ways, and you may even meet someone interesting as you pursue your daily affairs or health goals. There can be a special attraction to mysteries and hidden motives, investigations of some kind, and all that we don’t typically see.

Aquarius

Aquarius

This is a good time for coming to agreements, romantic overtures, expressions of affection, and sharing of good humor, dear Aquarius. The beauty may very well be in how you communicate more than what you are expressing. It’s a good time for getting advice or simply reaching out. You can be eager to start a new creative project, or possibly a new romantic affair or experience. Conversations about love, children, creative arts, hobbies, or entertainment can be pleasing now. With the Moon in your sign all day, you are projecting yourself warmly and others are drawn to you. Others may seem a little indulgent or even irresponsible in your eyes today, however.

Pisces

Pisces

Agreements might come easily right now, dear Pisces, and you can have a stronger desire to find peace in your domestic life or with family now. You are seeking out more harmony on the job and in your daily life. This may not be a day in which a lot gets done in an obvious or explicit way, but it’s good for mending fences, enjoying others, and expressing your feelings. The Moon in the sign just behind yours all day suggests keeping things quiet, and makes it a good time for personal reflection. You may not be in the spotlight, but this can be a good thing as you need to emotionally recharge.

Our Flag Flies High

The U.S. flag is a symbol

Of what Americans treasure;

It represents the values

We cherish beyond measure.

Our flag flies high for freedom,

For legal equality,

For Constitutional rights,

And justice for you and me.

Our flag flies high for bravery,

The courage it takes to fight

And even give our lives

For what we know is right.

Our flag flies high for compassion;

We quickly help those in need;

When there’s a need for service,

Americans take the lead.

The American flag is an icon,

Representing the American way;

Our hearts swell with emotion,

When we see it ripple and sway.

Traditions and Customs for July 4th

Independence Day is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays. Similar to other summer-themed events, Independence Day celebrations often take place outdoors. Independence Day is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal institutions (like the postal service and federal courts) are closed on that day. Many politicians make it a point on this day to appear at a public event to praise the nation’s heritage, laws, history, society, and people.

Families often celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue and take advantage of the day off and, in some years, long weekend to gather with relatives. Decorations (e.g., streamers, balloons, and clothing) are generally colored red, white, and blue, the colors of the American flag. Parades are often in the morning, while fireworks displays occur in the evening at such places as parks, fairgrounds, or town squares.

The night before the Fourth was once the focal point of celebrations, marked by raucous gatherings often incorporating bonfires as their centerpiece. In New England, towns competed to build towering pyramids, assembled from barrels and casks. They were lit at nightfall, to usher in the celebration. The highest were in Salem, Massachusetts (on Gallows Hill, the famous site of the execution of 13 women and 6 men for witchcraft in 1692 during the Salem witch trials, where the tradition of bonfires in celebration had persisted), composed of as many as forty tiers of barrels; these are the tallest bonfires ever recorded. The custom flourished in the 19th and 20th centuries, and is still practiced in some New England towns.

Independence Day fireworks are often accompanied by patriotic songs such as the national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner”, “God Bless America”, “America the Beautiful”, “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”, “This Land Is Your Land”, “Stars and Stripes Forever”, and, regionally, “Yankee Doodle” in northeastern states and “Dixie” in southern states. Firework shows are held in many states, and many fireworks are sold for personal use or as an alternative to a public show. Safety concerns have led some states to ban fireworks or limit the sizes and types allowed. Illicit traffic transfers many fireworks from less restrictive states.

A salute of one gun for each state in the United States, called a “salute to the union,” is fired on Independence Day at noon by any capable military base.

In 2009, New York City had the largest fireworks display in the country, with over 22 tons of pyrotechnics exploded.[21] Other major displays are in Chicago on Lake Michigan; in San Diego over Mission Bay; in Boston on the Charles River; in St. Louis on the Mississippi River; in San Francisco over the San Francisco Bay; and on the National Mall in Washington, D.C..

During the annual Windsor-Detroit International Freedom Festival, Detroit, Michigan hosts one of the world’s largest fireworks displays, over the Detroit River, to celebrate Independence Day in conjunction with Windsor, Ontario’s celebration of Canada Day.

While the official observance always falls on July 4, participation levels may vary according to which day of the week the 4th falls on. If the holiday falls in the middle of the week, some fireworks displays and celebrations may take place during the weekend for convenience, again, varying by region.

The first week of July is typically one of the busiest American travel periods of the year, as many people utilize the holiday for extended vacation trips

Observances Throughout History for Saturday, July 4th

In 1777, thirteen gunshots were fired in salute, once at morning and once again as evening fell, on July 4 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Philadelphia celebrated the first anniversary in a manner a modern American would find quite familiar: an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks. Ships were decked with red, white, and blue bunting.

In 1778, from his headquarters at Ross Hall, near New Brunswick, New Jersey, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute (feu de joie). Across the Atlantic Ocean, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France.

In 1779, July 4 fell on a Sunday. The holiday was celebrated on Monday, July 5.

In 1781 the Massachusetts General Court became the first state legislature to recognize July 4 as a state celebration.

In 1783, Moravians in Salem, North Carolina, held a celebration of July 4 with a challenging music program assembled by Johann Friedrich Peter. This work was titled “The Psalm of Joy.” This is recognized as the first recorded celebration and is still celebrated there today.

In 1791 the first recorded use of the name “Independence Day” occurred.

In 1870, the U.S. Congress made Independence Day an unpaid holiday for federal employees.

In 1938, Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday.

During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain rule.[5][6] After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.[7]

Adams’s prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress.[8]

Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed.[9][10][11][12][13]

Coincidentally, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but another Founding Father who became a President, James Monroe, died on July 4, 1831, thus becoming the third President in a row who died on the holiday. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872, and, so far, is the only U.S. President to have been born on Independence Day.
