Let’s Talk Witch – Solitary Practice

Native American Comments & Graphics

Solitary Practice

Some witches prefer to practice alone instead of being with a group of witches. This could be because the solitary practice is more suitable to their knowledge, experience, lifestyle, purposes, and temperament. However, even if these witches practice witchcraft alone, they can still join covens if only for the purpose of celebrating Sabbaths or other occasions. Some witches, on the other hand, may start practicing alone for a certain period of time and then later join a coven.

More often than not, it can be easy to choose the path of solitary practice especially if one is a seasoned witch. However, if you are a beginner, you may find it lonesome to practice alone. In addition, you need to put extra effort into practicing witchcraft properly if you are alone given that nobody will guide you on what you should do.

Conversely, solitary practice allows you to discover and hone your own witchcraft style instead of adopting the ideology of an established coven.

Solitary witches follow some guidelines, which can help them in practicing successfully and safely. These guidelines are also applicable for beginners in the Wiccan way.

When you are practicing witchcraft alone, you may need to gather different resources in order to acquire insights as well as perspectives that may help you learn and become proficient. Resources include books, articles, and other forms of reference. However, it is not enough that you merely study about witchcraft. You need to apply what you learn. As such, it is advisable to set a schedule, which can make witchcraft a part of your daily routine. You have to practice regularly in order to develop your skills.

Solitary practice involves regular meditation for improving your adherence to your higher self and enhancing your mental focus. You can also start with simple spells and rituals until such time that you think you are ready for more complex ones. It is also advisable to keep a manual or diary of your work and experiences so you have something to refer to in the future.

Once you have spent time acquiring the knowledge you need to learn and to practice witchcraft alone, you will have a more accurate idea of the types of magic or skills that appeal to you and suit you the most.

Seasons of the Witch – Legends and Lore, Ancient Holidays And Some Not So Ancient!

Seasons of the Witch – Legends and Lore, Ancient Holidays And Some Not So Ancient!

Today Is …

Celebration of Diana and Hecate. Leave a harvest offering at a place where three roads or paths meet.

Egyptian; Day of battle between Horus and Set

Rome: From ancient times, Vertumnalia was celebrated as a festival to the god Vertumnus and the Goddess Pomona, the patrons of orchards and gardens. Vertumnus was a shapeshifter, and the seasonal changing of fruit trees reflects the many aspects of Vertumnus. Pomona’s name is derived from the Roman word ‘pomus,’ or fruit. She is the Goddess of the Cultivated Garden, the Goddess of Apples, the Goddess of the Tree of Life.

Greece: In celebration of the birth of the Goddess Athena.

Feast of Greek Deities Aphrodite and Eros–Day to honor love and passion

Festival Of Isis

Greek Festival of Hecate, Goddess of the Crossroad and Patron of Witches. On this date, the major Pagan festival of Hecate is traditionally held at moonrise. Hecate, the mysterious Goddess of Darkness and Protectress of all Witches, is a personification of the Moon and the dark side of the female principle.

1818 – Birth of Lucy Stone, feminist theorist. Pioneer feminists, “Lucy Stoners” kept their maiden names

Lefthander’s Day

Festival Of The Volcano – Antigua, Guatemala

Nemoralia of Diana, Festival of Torches – The Romans took the Greek festival honoring Artemis and Hecate (see August 11) and gave it a fixed place in the solar calendar on this date. It was also known as Diana’s Feast of Torches. Roman women marched in torchlight processions to the temples of Diana and Hecate. They also visited the groves of Diana with their hunting dogs on leashes to offer her thanks.

The temple of Diana on the Aventine was an asylum for runaway slaves and on this day all slaves of both sexes had a holiday. All women made a point of washing their hair on this day.

The mention of ritual hair-washing seems to connect this holiday with the prohibitions on washing and beautification which begin at the start of the month of Av in the Jewish calendar (July 28) and at the start of August (see August 1) for the Greeks. The full moon of Av (August 11 this year) was celebrated with torchlight processions, bonfires and dancing.

Sacrifices were also made on this day to Vertumnus (an ancient Etruscan God associated with change, especially the seasons), Fortuna Equestris (in honor of a battle won by a cavalry charge), Hercules, Castor and Pollus, the Camanae Goddess of springs, later identified with the Muses–they also had their own holiday in October) and Flora. Blackburn, Bonnie & Leofranc Holford-Strevens, The Oxford Companion to the Year, Oxford University Press 1999

August 13 – 15 O-Bon – The Japanese celebrate the Days of the Dead in the middle of summer, on either July 13-15 or August 13 – 15. On the first day of the festival, they decorate the graves of their ancestors with fruit, cakes and lanterns. On the second day, people set up spirit altars called tamadana in their homes. They set the memorial plaques of their ancestors on a rush mat, surrounded by vegetarian dishes and cucumbers carved to resemble horses on which the spirits can ride. The third day is the day for the bon-odori, a slow hypnotic dance performed in concentric circles or multiple lines. At evening, tiny lanterns are set adrift on rivers or seas, to light the way for the souls returning to the other side. Rufus, Anneli, The World Holiday Book, Harper San Francisco 1994

St. Radegund – St Radegund is one of the saints who took the place of the goddess as grain protectress, as described by Berger. Married to the brutal and philandering Merovingian King Clotaire, she fled from her husband after he murdered his brother. He tried to track her down but she was miraculously protected, in a story similar to those told about Mary. She came upon a farmer sowing his field and instructed him to tell anyone asking that he had not seen anyone pass by since he sowed his oats. Whereupon the oats grew so abundantly that she could hide among them and when the farmer duly reported her message, her husband gave up his pursuit. Her unofficial feast day is in February when oats are sowed but it also seems significant that she should be honored at the time of the harvest and in the same month as Mary in her guise as Harvest Goddess.

She was the patron saint for women afflicted with the pox, who were supposed to apply the skin of a black lamb to their skin, then send their husbands on a pilgrimage to St Radegund.

Radegund founded a monastery at Poitiers which became famous for the quality of the meals she served, thus she is the patron saint of female cooks. Her chaplain, Fortunat, the patron saint of male cooks, wrote her a letter praising a meal she prepared for him:

Next, a superb piece of meat, arranged in the shape of a mountain and flanked by high hills, the spaces between which were filled with a garden of various stews that included the most delicious products of earth and water….A black earthenware jar provided me with milk of the utmost whiteness: it was quite sure to please me.

Berger, Pamela, The Goddess Obscured: Transformation of the Grain Protectress from Goddess to Saint, Beacon 1985 Blackburn, Bonnie & Leofranc Holford-Strevens, The Oxford Companion to the Year, Oxford University Press 1999 Larousse Gastronomique, entry on the Chef

St. Cassian- Patron saint of schoolteachers; his pagan students stabbed him to death with their pen nibs. Hoever, Rev Hugo, Lives of the Saints, Catholic Book Publishing Company1955

15: Sproshinki – Serpen An agricultural holiday celebrating the end of haymaking. People have a good time, feasting, boxing, and much more. 15: Birthday of Charles Leland, folklorist and author, 1824 20: Full Moon – Corn Moon 29 August 2015 20: Birthday of author Ann Moura in 1947 31: Birthday of author Raymond Buckland

Thursday’s Witchery

Today is the day for prosperity work of all kinds. It can also be used for healing work, whether that is a physical healing of an illness or an emotional healing. Also remember that you have to follow up your healing work and prosperity magick and physical action.

I can’t tell you the number of times I have met new witches who complain to me that their prosperity spell or “I need a better job” spell did not work as they expected. They’ll ramble on and on about how much time and money they spent working their magick….but, alas, they had no glorious manifestion of wealth or fabulous job that suddenly dropped out of the sky and landed in their laps.

Then, when I gently ask them, “Did you enchant your resume or application when you filled it out? Did you do a little confidence-boosting spellwork when you went to apply for the job or went to the interview?” typically they give me a blank, confused stare.

Nine times out of ten, their response is, “You mean I have to go out and actually look for the job too?” Um, yes, my dear, you certainly do. Magick follows the path of least resistance, which means it’s going to manifest along the simplest, quickest route. Get out there and hit the pavement. See what you can find. Times are tough and competition for good jobs is fierce, so you need whatever edge you can get. For folks like us, we’re going to get the edge by using our magick and our spellcraft.

Thursdays have such a rich source of magick for us to draw upon that, honestly, the sky is the limit. This is the day associated with the gods of the sky and heavens, after all. Get to know these deities and add their wisdom and magick into your days

Thursday

Jupiter’s (Thor’s) day

The name is derived from Old English Þūnresdæg and Middle English Thuresday (with loss of -n-, first in northern dialects, from influence of Old Norse Þorsdagr) meaning “Thor’s Day”. Thunor, Donar (German, Donnerstag) and Thor are derived from the name of the Germanic god of thunder, Thunraz, equivalent to Jupiter in the interpretatio romana.

In most Romance languages, the day is named after the Roman god Jupiter, who was the god of sky and thunder. In Latin, the day was known as Iovis Dies, “Jupiter’s Day”. In Latin, the genitive or possessive case of Jupiter was Iovis/Jovis and thus in most Romance languages it became the word for Thursday: Italian giovedì, Spanish jueves, French jeudi, Sardinian jòvia, Catalan dijous, and Romanian joi. This is also reflected in the p-Celtic Welsh dydd Iau.

The astrological and astronomical sign of the planet Jupiter is sometimes used to represent Thursday.

Since the Roman god Jupiter was identified with Thunor (Norse Thor in northern Europe), most Germanic languages name the day after this god: Torsdag in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, Hósdagur/Tórsdagur in Faroese, Donnerstag in German or Donderdag in Dutch. Finnish and Northern Sami, both non-Germanic (Uralic) languages, uses the borrowing “Torstai” and “Duorastat”. In the extinct Polabian Slavic language, it was perundan, Perun being the Slavic equivalent of Thor.

There are a number of modern names imitating the naming of Thursday after an equivalent of “Jupiter” in local tradition. In most of the languages of India, the word for Thursday is Guruvar- var meaning day and guru being the style for Bṛhaspati, guru to the gods and regent of the planet Jupiter. In Thai, the word is Wan Pharuehatsabodi – referring to the Hindu deity Bṛhaspati, also associated with Jupiter. En was an old Illyrian deity and in his honor in the Albanian language Thursday is called “Enjte”. In the Nahuatl language, Thursday is Tezcatlipotōnal meaning “day of Tezcatlipoca”.

Native American Comments & Graphics

We pledge this day to do our best
To put the past behind us
Walking straight with head held high
So fortune’s favor finds us

Yesterday is gone and done
Tomorrow lies before us
We will not let ourselves be bound
By history’s faded story

No longer looking toward the past
Except for lessons learned
We’re moving toward the future now
And all that we have earned

Bless us Divine Mother in our tasks ahead.

However, responsibility comes with that freedom. Because he is not bound to the restraints of others he must choose how to act. Your true challenge at the moment is to move forward without trampling the dreams of others. Fortunately your moral fiber is strong as well, and will guide you down the right path.

Your Daily Rune for Aug. 12th is Jera

Your Rune for Today

Jera

era denotes positive, recurring cycles, fertility and a time to harvest rewards from your hard work.

Additional information about Today’s Rune, Jera

jera : year, harvest

Phonetic equivalent: y (but may be used in place of ‘j’)

DIVINATORY MEANINGS: change, cycle turning, reward, motion, productivity, inevitable development

MAGICAL USES: to bring change; for fertility and growth

ASSOCIATED MYTHS & DEITIES: Sif, Thor, Freyr, Granni

ANALYSIS: In this modern age of central heating and oranges in February, it is difficult to imagine the close ties that people once had with the cycles of the year, particularly in the more Northern climes. The changing seasons affected not only the weather, but also the day to day activities and even the diets of ancient peoples. Constant change was the norm, and the object was to become attuned with those changes, not to fight against them. An ancient farmer (or even some modern ones) wouldn’t need to look at a calendar to tell him when to plant, or read a weather forecast to know when the snows were coming. The changing seasons were a part of his blood and bones, and his very existence depended on adapting to change.

Jera follows isa just as spring follows winter. The frozen stagnancy of ice is broken by the turning of the wheel, and things are once again moving along as they should. In fact, we have now broken out of the entire set ‘negative’ runes with which we began this aett. This has been accomplished not by fighting to escape the ice or railing against the unfairness of fate, but by learning from those experiences and simply waiting for the inevitable thaw. Jera is the communion wine – the product of the joining of opposites bringing life. Storms may come and go, but the sun is always there and life is generally pretty good. Enjoy it while you can.

Your Daily Tarot Card for Aug. 12th is The Hermit

Your Daily Tarot Card

The Hermit

The Hermit denotes a need to have some space between you and the everyday hustle and bustle of our busy world. The Hermit needs to retreat. Indeed, happiness for The Hermit requires seclusion, freedom from material wants, and time for intense introspection. The answers The Hermit needs cannot be found in our physical world. The truths he seeks are internal, spiritual, and the distraction of a well developed social life can only impede his quest for his personal truths. Still, although not anything remotely resembling extroversion, The Hermit does sometimes need to share time with others; so he can both learn and teach, guide and be guided. The Hermit’s time spent amongst people depletes his energy rapidly. To avoid mental and physical overload he has to retreat from social settings quickly.

Get A Jump On Tomorrow…..

Your Horoscopes for Thursday, August 13th

General Horoscope

Cosmic messages issue conflicting commands today, testing our abilities to navigate through these turbulent times. A stressful Saturn-Pluto alignment that lasts for days reveals our resistance to inevitable change. However, nothing stops us from taking risks while the Sun harmoniously trines radical Uranus. Meanwhile, the Moon is partying in audacious Leo, encouraging us to ride the shifting tides rather than trying to cling to the status quo.

Aries Horoscope

(Mar 21 – Apr 19)

Curbing your enthusiasm sounds like a smart strategy today, but your excitement will probably overtake your common sense. Naturally, it’s not wise to express everything you feel because some desires are better kept to yourself. You could stir up a hornet’s nest if you broadcast your needs to everyone before reassessing the ramifications of your actions. Luckily, you still may be able to stretch the envelope as long as you stay aware of the larger circumstances and don’t push your luck too far.

Taurus Horoscope

(Apr 20 – May 20)

It’s highly tempting when an unexpected event offers you the good fortune to participate in a mind-blowing activity. However, you’re still likely to honor previous commitments and exhibit some self-restraint. Thankfully, you should be able to play both sides of the game and embark on the adventure as long as it doesn’t upset family dynamics at home. Recent experiences increase your wisdom, but the window of opportunity to walk on the edge is closing. If you don’t act quickly, you could lose this chance forever.

Gemini Horoscope

(May 21 – Jun 20)

Ironically, a fortuitous twist to today’s events can add to your concerns about your future, but there’s no need to worry if you remain flexible about your current plans. Although it might feel as if you are at an impasse, the transition you have been dreaming about could occur without much resistance now. Your life is on the upswing, even it’s not unfolding according to your timetable. Don’t waste precious time reanalyzing your options; show your courage and take a giant leap of faith.

Cancer Horoscope

(Jun 21 – Jul 22)

Your current fascination with being different reveals a surprising side of your personality. You may not be interested in the opinions of others now, so unsolicited advice won’t have much impact on your current choices. This is the opportunity you’ve been anticipating; go ahead and act like the nonconformist you secretly want to be — even if it’s just for a day. The emotional satisfaction you earn is priceless and worth every penny.

Leo Horoscope

(Jul 23 – Aug 22)

If you can’t be the leader of your pack, you’ll likely want to leave it and head out on your own. In any event, the same old routine is not appealing to you as the willful Sun in your sign syncs up with rebellious Uranus. Be insistent about your independence if you want to shake things up. Fortunately, if you share your plans with those you trust, you might be pleasantly surprised by their support. It’s better to have allies in your corner, even if you ultimately need to travel your path alone.

Virgo Horoscope

(Aug 23 – Sep 22)

You’re wary of relying on others because you’re afraid someone might do a disappearing act just as things get serious. Ultimately, the apparent instability of those around you may be a reflection of your unwillingness to participate in an unhealthy relationship. But you don’t have to convince anyone to do your bidding now. It’s your turn to star in your story instead of waiting for anyone else to steal the show. Shine, baby, shine.

Libra Horoscope

(Sep 23 – Oct 22)

Sticking to your schedule isn’t so simple today because unforeseen events make it nearly impossible to carry on with your original plans. Nevertheless, there’s no reason to be agitated by things you cannot control. Let a few lower-priority projects slip for a day or two. Putting the pieces back together in a more constructive manner will be easier once you break the routine. Don’t resist change now; there’s a treasure to be found in the chaos if you’re willing to experience it head on.

Scorpio Horoscope

(Oct 23 – Nov 21)

Sometimes innovation requires hard work, yet inspiration seems to strike today without much effort on your part. Positive change is in the air, so stop trying to manage your life with worn-out rules. However, your plans might fall apart if you assume a laissez-faire attitude. Revise your playbook for the day and you’ll gain the edge you need. Instead of just focusing on your own ambition, work out a strategy that’s beneficial to everyone. Your progressive ideas and unconventional tactics can rock everyone’s world.

Sagittarius Horoscope

(Nov 22 – Dec 21)

There is a wide gulf between your need for emotional security and your craving for a new adventure. Your plans are being stress-tested by an anything-goes trine from wild Uranus to the brilliant Sun in your 9th House of Big Ideas. Unfortunately, your overconfidence might entice you to gamble foolishly on something that’s not that important in the long run. Being a creative visionary is admirable, but not if you jeopardize your recent progress. Taking a calculated risk is worth it only if you consider all the variables first.

Capricorn Horoscope

(Dec 22 – Jan 19)

A cosmic wake-up call rings through on all your digital devices today, reminding you to include others in your latest plans as electric Uranus trines the Sun in your 8th House of Shared Investments. Go ahead and reveal your best ideas — even if they aren’t ready for prime time yet — with a possible partner. Someone who respects your integrity will see the positive potential in your thinking and will likely jump in to join your endeavors. The more the merrier; the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Aquarius Horoscope

(Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Somehow you can get away with the craziest of ideas today. In fact, you’re quite skilled at taking an ingenious concept to a whole new level now. Your coworkers may urge you to put your thoughts into action, even if they want you to modify some details of your plan first. This is dangerous territory because accommodating someone else’s concerns could actually weaken your strategy. But walking away might be a bigger mistake. Retreat just long enough to alleviate the tension, take a few deep breaths and try again. Don’t let anyone else steal your thunder.

Pisces Horoscope

(Feb 19 – Mar 20)

The atmosphere is crackling with excitement and your life is buzzing with surprises; however, you might not be so amused with the current uncertainty. You have had your share of unexpected detours lately, and you’re not looking for any more delays now. Luckily, your resiliency empowers you to improve your plan and achieve a successful launch. Be daring in your thinking and persistent in your execution. Practice makes perfect.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Wednesday, August 12th

Aries

Aries Horoscope
Aries

You are very energized and positive about most things today, dear Aries. Even so, thinking may not be precise or factual now with Mercury in opposition to Neptune. There can be a lot of mind wandering and detours from straight thinking now, which can lead to interesting ideas and new possibilities. If you want your privacy, you can keep certain things to yourself, but avoid coverups and truth stretching now, as it can cost you. Before making a commitment, be sure you’re behind it fully, which may not be possible today. If you can find healthy ways to get away or mix up the routine, do so, but your very best bet will be to find a nice balance between work and play.

Taurus

Taurus

An opposition between Mercury and Neptune can point to a need to pull back from overthinking things, dear Taurus. Even so, something could be misconstrued today, so that if you’re in a situation that depends on precision, you will want to double check your facts. Look for harmless ways to engage your imagination and need for drama in your life for best results today. Watch that you don’t get carried away by an idea or vision that takes you too far away from what needs to be done, but do find ways to satisfy your itch for new options and possibilities. Later today, there can be a strong connection with the past and your memories, possibly stirred by a chance meeting. There can also be a stronger need for comfortable surroundings and familiar faces.

Gemini

Gemini

Something you say or do today could be relayed or interpreted in the wrong way, dear Gemini, with your ruler, Mercury, in difficult aspect with illusive Neptune. However, this can also be a day when all that is imaginative, fantastic, or spiritual engages you. Seek out people you trust for opinions on your more practical affairs, but look within for answers to matters of the heart. You may feel that you have too many choices right now, and that can mean that you are not truly ready to come to a solid conclusion. Giving things more time is important now. Later today, there can be new and exciting ideas that may even be stimulated by a difference in opinion.

Cancer

Cancer

It’s nice to be able to let your imagination loose for a while, but today, dear Cancer, it may take you away from the things you need to accomplish and can be quite disruptive. Your mind can wander, and you might want to make yourself very clear if you have something important to say or instructions to relay, as misunderstandings are easy right now. The desire on one hand to obtain information and make sense of something is strong, but on the other, the tendency to break it apart is powerful as well. This is not the time for critical detail work or for beginning entirely new ventures. Let your imagination go, but do so in the right places, and not so far that you set yourself up for a letdown.
