Magickal Activity for January 12, the Day of Compitalia

The Lare Shrine for Household Protection

Items needed: One small wall shelf; a figurine to represent the Lare; a small dish; one white votive candle in a glass holder; a sprig of Rue; a stick of sandalwood incense and ash catcher; a small bowl of salt; a glass of water.

Hang the shelf in the kitchen at eye level. Place the Lare, dish, candle, and sprig of Rue on the shelf.

On the first Saturday morning following the full moon of January, consecrate your shrine as follows:

Begin by placing three pinches of salt into the glass of water. Dip the sprig of Rue into the salt water and sprinkle the mixture over the shrine while you say:

May the power of salt and water combine,
To bless and consecrate this sacred shrine.
Light the candle, and the incense stick while you say:
I now beckon the spirits of the hearth and the home,
To make your presence to me now known.
Bless and protect all that you can see,
For this I shall reward you, so mote it be.

The shrine has now been activated. Each morning offer the Lare a piece of your food. Or decorate your shrine with seasonal flowers and foods. Light the candle and the incense, and thank the Lare for his protection.

Compitalia (Lares and Penates)

To the ancient Romans, the Lares and Penates were synonymous onymous with ancestral ghosts or spirits. Every family had its own Lare that protected the home and several Penates who watched over the hearth and food pantry.

Typically, the Lare was a small bronze statuette of a youthful figure holding a dish and raising a drinking horn. It was housed in a small shrine or niche in the wall and was prayed to each morning and at mealtime. During special family events (births, birthdays, weddings, and deaths) the little figurine was crowned, decorated with flower garlands, and given offerings of incense, cakes, and wine.

The festival of Compitalia was held in honor of the Lares and marked the end of the agricultural year. Shrines erected at the crossroads (compita) where three or four farms intersected. A broken plowshare was hung up at the shrine, and an altar was set up for sacrifice. There would be a blessing rite that was followed by a period of feasting. It was Augustus who transformed formed the rural celebration of Compitalia into a state festival that was conducted by a state priest on behalf of all the people.

Moon in Pisces

With Moon in Pisces your emotions drive you. Whatever appeals to your senses attracts you be it music, literature or poetry. You change your mind easily, and to some, this makes you unreliable. When the going gets tough, you get discouraged. You love change, routines seem to draw the life out of you. You are easygoing, but very shy.

The Moon in Pisces has often been considered an unfavorable Sign. It is often attributed with causing glandular problems and obesity. On the outside you appear happy, but inside you are prone to being depressed. You may even lack a common sense of humor. This may lead to periods of indiscretion, lack of focus, and even dishonesty.

At some time in your life hospitals, prisons or some other type of institution will play an important role. You have a flair for music; composing, writing or just listening and appreciating. Whatever you do is emotional and romantic. You have very creative ideas, and a strong imagination to fuel them.

Tuesday’s Witchery

Tuesday is the day to work any magick that falls in the category of increasing strength, courage, bravery, and passion. All of these intense emotions are linked to this day’s energies, and spells designed around these themes will have extra punch when performed on this magickal day.

So, let’s add a little passion and conviction into your life! Break out the daring red pieces of your wardrobe, and put a little pizzazz into your day. Work with Lilith, and see what she has to teach you about personal power and sexuality. Meditate on Tiw/Tyr and Mars, and see what those ancient warrior gods will show you about new tactics, strategies, and claiming personal victories in your life. Practice conjuring up that astral weapon from the meditation and use it wisely for protection and for courage.

Create a philter for courage and protection or handcraft your own Witch’s jar to remove negativity from your home. See what other Witch crafts you can conjure up with Tuesday’s magick. Create some kitchen magick on this Tuesday by whipping up a spicy stew-add in a few Mars-associated ingredients such as carrots, peppers, and garlic. Empower the stew for success, and then treat yourself and your family to a good, hearty meal. Try working with a little aromatherapy and burn some spicy or coffee-scented candles to increase your energy level.

Check the sky at night, and see if you can find the reddish planet Mars up in the heavens. Not sure where to look? Check an astronomy magazine or search the Web for more information. Become a magickal warrior and move forward in your life with strength, courage, and compassion. Embrace the side of yourself that loves a good challenge and that is passionate and daring! Banish fear, and face your future with strength and conviction. Believe in yourself and in your dreams, work hard, and you will win every time.

Tuesday

Quote

Tuesday

A god, goddess, or planet governs each day of the week. It is usually easy to spot the ruler of the day by its name. The word Tuesday, however, is not so easy, but if we look at the word in Spanish, Martes, we clearly see its connections to Mars.

Because Tuesday revolves around the energy of Mars, Tuesdays are good for business, mechanical things, buying and selling animals, hunting, beginning studies, gardening, sexual activities, and confrontation. This is a day for sex magick, energy, stamina, and health. As in the old saying, Tuesdays child is full of grace, is also good for success magick and defense against enemies.

Angels of Tuesday are Camael, Samael, Satael, Amabiel, Friagne, and Hyniel. When invoked, Camael takes the form of a leopard. In Druid mythology he is a god of war, which is why we see him associated with Mars. Camael is said to be a member of the “Magnificent Seven” in some circles. Camael is another “terminator” angel.

Samael walks both worlds as a magician and sorcerer. some see him as the angel of death, others as “the bright and poisonous one.” Many consider him more of a demon, and accuse him of being Satan. However, there is reference to the satans (plural) as enforcers of the law, a sort of angelic police, if you will. Supposedly, when Samael is around, dogs howl in the night. On one hand, he is the ruler of the fifth heaven and in charge of two million angels; on the other, he is the one who changed into a serpent and convinced Eve to partake of the forbidden fruit of knowledge.

Satael is an angel of air invoked in magic rites and is the presiding spirit of the planet Mars. Amabiel is another spirit of the planet Mars; however he spends his energy on issues of human sexuality. Friagne, also an angel of this day, is invoked from the east. He is a member of the fifth heaven. Hyniel also belongs to this day and is subject to the east wind.

On Tuesdays the hour of sunrise and every eight hours after that are also ruled by Mars, and that makes these times of the day doubly blessed. These four hours are the strongest ones to do ritual in. Check your local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine your local sunrise.

Circle of Protection

Make a circle of salt. Stand inside the circle with a white candle. Gaze into the flame of the candle.

Concentrate and imagine fire all around you with glowing.

Protective light. Now speak these words in a chant:

“Craft this spell
Into the fire
Craft this spell well
I weave it high
I weave it now
I speak to this simmering flame
None shall ever come
To hurt me or maim
No one shall ever pass
This fiery wall
None shall pass
No one at all!”

Repeat these three times then blow out the candle and step out of the circle of salt.

Let’s Talk Witch – Binding & Cursing

book

Binding & Cursing

Binding and cursing are often frowned upon in magical circles. Many people like to believe they’ve been bound or cursed, but the truth is that very few people can do a decent binding or curse and of those who can, even fewer would bother.

In binding, the idea is to prevent another person from doing something. Binding them from doing harm is a popular concept thanks to the 1996 movie The Craft. Binding someone to prevent them from telling a secret is another. It seems simple enough and well-intentioned too. However you must not forget that you will be bound along with them as you are the channel for the magic. You must be absolutely certain that you are right. There can be no doubt. The love spells that focus on a particular person are a binding. You want that one person, so you do a spell to make him or her come to you and love you. Then you’re stuck with them. They might be a total prat, might not be all that they seemed, or as my friend found, they might be violent and abusive. Unfortunately because of your binding, you’ve bound them to you and it’s not that easy to get rid of them.

For best results, a personal link is required for a successful binding. A photograph will suffice but hair, blood, nail clippings, clothing or a signed document work better. A doll or poppet can be stuffed with these, along with herbs or other materials. Baptise the doll with their name, every name for that person that you might know— full name, nicknames, online alter-egos, as many ways of clearly identifying that person that you can come up with. Then bind them with anything you desire; cord, chain, or even a piece of barbed wire. After they’re bound, seal it and deal with it as you will.

Paper cutout figures can work just as well. Write the person’s name in the middle and what you are binding them from and fold it up tightly. It can be secured with paperclips if you like.
Cursing is ill-wishing someone. Again, there is a chance that you will suffer alongside them, so be very careful before trying this.

In the past, I have been somewhat creative in my cursing. I cursed someone to feel compassion for the victims of their actions. For me this wasn’t a problem, I am fairly compassionate by nature, but for him, it was a curse. Another person I’ve used this curse against committed suicide. I struggled with it for a day or two, but after thinking it through and processing things I came to the realisation that I was not responsible for her death. I wanted her to realise what she’d done and take responsibility for the damage she’d caused. How she chose to cope with that was completely on her and from what I hear, the consequences of her actions were catching up with her in other ways that were even less pleasant for her.

If you are going to curse, you first need to be sure that you mean it. You might want someone to have a nasty car crash, but if you aren’t also prepared to see them die slowly and horribly from cancer then you don’t really mean it. Even if you have the power to perform a curse of this magnitude, you need to think about a few things before you consider it. Working with dark energy is one thing. Cursing death is tantamount to murder. It’s no different from the person who chooses to use a gun, only this time your weapon is magic.

A family member of a friend was receiving death threats from someone. While she has cursed him, she has done it in such a way that the curse will only take effect if he crosses a boundary that she’s set around that family member and others that are close to him.

I’ve been accused of curses that I haven’t performed. My partner’s ex-wife believed that I was going to curse her when she started making trouble for him. In all honesty, why would I bother? She was doing it all to herself without me wasting any of my time and energy, what was the point?

Most of the time, if left to their own devices, people that you would consider binding or cursing manage to do it to themselves quite nicely. Some will suddenly realise that they’ve driven everyone away and maybe it was something they’re doing, some won’t. It’s never their fault as they’re perpetual victims. Cursing someone like this will only reinforce their mindset and behaviour. It won’t teach them a lesson so there’s no point wasting your energy.

There’s one last thing I want to say on this topic. In the Craft there is a saying, “if you can’t curse, you can’t heal”. Effectively what this means is that you need to destroy the illness in order for the healing to begin. You need to be balanced and work with both sides.

Herb of the Day for January 11 is Allspice

Herb of the Day

Allspice

Allspice is used as a paste to soothe and relieve toothache, as well as a mouthwash to freshen the breath. The rind contains the most active medicinal components and is considered to be stimulant in action, particularly the aroma.
The tea has antiseptic properties (due to the eugenol content in the berries) and is used primarily as a digestive aid for flatulence, intestinal gas and indigestion. The tea is also used as an appetite stimulant, and as a carminative. Both the tea and a poultice are used for rheumatism and neuralgia.
Allspice lowers blood sugar (useful in diabetes) and improves protein absorption. The leaves are used in the bath for varicose veins, gout, and edema. The eugenol content is said to promote digestive enzymes in the body.

Magickal uses: Allspice encourages healing and is used in mixtures to ask for money and good fortune. Also used in determination and healing spells

Properties: Aromatic, carminative, stimulant

Growth: Allspice is harvested from a tree that is native to Central and South America as well as the Caribbean. Allspice is the dried berry of the pimento, an evergreen tree growing to 40 feet in height. It bears opposite, leathery, oblong to oblong-lancelet leaves whose pinnately arranged veins show prominently on the underside. Small white flowers grow in many-flowered cymes in the upper leaf axils from June to August. The fruit is a fleshy, sweet berry which is purplish-black when ripe.

Poultice: Boil berries and make a thick paste. Spread on a soft clean cloth. The cloth can also be dipped in warm tea and used as hot pack

Pimento water: Combine 5 parts crushed berries with 200 parts water and distill down to half the original volume. A dose is from 1-2 fluid ounces.

Oil: A dose is from 2-5 drops. For flatulence, take 2 or 3 drops on sugar

Powder: A dose is from 10-30 grains
