The Witches Digest for Friday, October 13th, Part 3 – Horoscopes & Divination

The Witches Digest for Friday, October 13th
Part 3 – Horoscopes & Divination

This Weekend’s Love Horoscope: Love Is Grand
Your love horoscope for the weekend of October 13-15, 2017
You’re wearing your heart on your sleeve this weekend! The Moon moves into brave and passionate Leo on Friday, leaving you feeling extra lovey-dovey and eager to share your feelings with your partner or crush. But don’t let attention-seeking Leo, with its flare for drama, get the best of you if those feelings aren’t immediately reciprocated.
The big news, though, happens Saturday when Venus moves into Libra, the sign of partnership. Venus rules Libra, so she feels happy, easy, and right at home here. Venus in Libra makes it easy to cooperate and helps keep things light and loving. Thanks to Libra’s great appreciation for beauty and the arts, Saturday is a great day to go on a date to the movies, a concert, or an art gallery … with a partner, of course!
The only speed bump happens Sunday when Mercury bumps heads with Uranus, causing your thoughts to race and making it all too easy to jump to conclusions. You might have radical new ideas about where you want your relationship to go, or maybe you’ll notice something about your partner or crush that irritates you. Refrain from blurting out hurtful, judgmental, or assumptive comments. It’s been such a lovely weekend! Don’t end it with an argument.

Intimacy Issues of Each Zodiac Sign
Astrology can help you overcome intimacy issues in love
Intimacy can be challenging. It’s not easy feeling exposed and vulnerable to those you love and trust — much less to someone you’re newly dating.
Relationships bring up our deepest anxieties, which we express in different ways. Some signs, such as Sagittarius and Aquarius, fear they’ll lose their independence, so they hold people at arm’s length. Others, like Cancer and Scorpio, crave commitment and may come off as too needy.
Learning how to create true intimacy is what life’s all about. What issues might stand in your way? Find out with a Love Celtic Cross Tarot reading and look up the intimacy horoscope for your sign below.
Aries (March 21 – April 19)
You’re determined to do things your own way, Aries. That spark of sovereignty within you is strong, and you fear losing it in relationships. Because you can take care of things so well on your own, you may shy away from letting others know how much you need them. Practicing the art of give-and-take is the key to maintaining your independence and also letting others in deeply. Also, take care you don’t demand too much, too soon.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
You know once you make a commitment, Taurus, it’s for good. That’s why you take your time choosing the right person. Once locked in, however, you want things to stay the same forever and stubbornly resist change. Fear of leaving your comfortable rut is your single greatest barrier to intimacy — a condition that thrives on constant growth. You need to trust that change is good, and embrace it with open arms before love can flourish.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
You tend to flit around a lot, Gemini, never staying put long enough to establish deeply-rooted ties. The fear of becoming bored or being hemmed in tends to keep you on the surface of things, never investing enough of yourself to feel committed. And, there’s that secret fear that your partner might discover the “dark twin” you try so hard to hide. Yet letting someone in shines the light of love into the darkness — leading to true intimacy.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
You fear exposing your soft underbelly, Cancer. Since your emotions are so close to the surface, it happens more often than you’d like. Once exposed, you’re at your loved one’s mercy. Because you’re more comfortable nurturing others than receiving loving care, being willing to fall apart, cry or be vulnerable is actually good for you. And, your willingness to reveal yourself makes intimacy with others much more rewarding.
Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)
You have a hard time relinquishing control, Leo. And, your desire to be the one in charge can keep others at a distance. Because you seem so capable, they may be content to let you run the show. Don’t fall prey to this trap, though — sharing power in a relationship is the key to intimacy. As you reveal areas in which you’re not as competent, you let others know the true you. Your quick temper can also ward people off, so practice patience.
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)
A feeling of unworthiness is at the root of your intimacy issues, Virgo. You fear that if you reveal your imperfections, others will run away. Yet no one holds you to the impossibly high standards you set for yourself. In fact, they’d rather you come out and play instead of always worrying and care-taking them. Don’t let your sharp mind and analytical abilities dominate your feelings, where the magic of intimacy lies.
Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)
You work hard at making things beautiful and harmonious, Libra. Therefore, you may tend to sweep relationship issues under the rug where they fester and create distance between you. Intimacy is about being real, not pretending things are ideal when they’re not. Also, your agile mind is skilled at figuring out feelings without ever feeling them. Getting into the messy realm of emotions scares you, but it’s the key to intimacy.
Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)
People sometimes feel threatened by you, Scorpio, which can be an obstacle to closeness. It’s not that you avoid intimacy; you thrive on delving deeply into feelings and confronting issues. It’s just that your intensity and blunt honesty can be too much for others. And, they may feel you want too much. On the other hand, you may hide your deepest feelings, afraid that if you open up you’ll be betrayed. You need to learn to trust more.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)
Yours is the sign of the eternal bachelor, Sagittarius. Footloose and fancy-free, you fiercely guard your freedom and often turn tail and run when people get too close. Your biggest obstacle to intimacy is considering commitment a trap, associated with the boring and humdrum. The solution is to find a partner who’ll give you a long leash — but in return, you’ll have to promise to stick around for the tedious parts.
Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)
You want to be seen as the strong one, Capricorn. Capable, sure, even stoic, you shy away from the realm of emotions and are loathe to let your vulnerabilities show. Others end up leaning on you, but what happens when you need help? You need to learn how to let others past your defenses and love you. Once you shatter the illusion that you’re invulnerable, then caring becomes a two-way-street and true intimacy is yours.
Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)
Like Mr. Spock from Star Trek, your sign prefers logic to feelings. You’re seen as self-contained, even chilly, and have trouble expressing what’s in your heart. Because you possess a brighter, quicker mind than most, you think it ought to serve all your needs. You fear losing your freedom if you let others in. Yet to avoid the fate of loneliness, you need to open up and explore the territory of the heart.
Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20)
Your biggest obstacle to intimacy, Pisces, is a lack of self-knowledge. You’re such a chameleon, skilled at being all things to all people, that you may not know what you really want. As you spend some time alone, apart from others’ needs and feelings, you’ll create better boundaries and lose the need to rescue those you love or let them take advantage of you. You’ll also find that place of strength that fosters true intimacy.

From The Astrology Room
ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)
You and I both know you’ve said some things you regret. We also know you can’t change the past. What you can do from today though, is prove to those concerned that you’ve learnt from all that occurred.
TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)
It’s time to decide how you want your day to day life to be and who should be your priority. Too many eyes were on you, but today gives you the privacy to explore your true feelings.
GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)
If you love life then life will love you back. Forcing an issue which has not felt right from the outset can only lead you to heartache and disappointment. An old ambition is given the chance to re surface.
CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)
You find fresh inspiration and motivation from new faces who enter your life and show you a better way to do things. Your element of water brings out your need to make peace with someone from your past.
LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)
Family have not been easy to understand, or make sense of lately. Why not back off and let them have time to work through the issues they are going through? Doing so will ensure you are not placed with any blame.
VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)
Careful you don’t end up losing respect for those who have been taking but not giving anything to you lately. It would be far better for you to grant those around you independence so they have the chance to learn to fly.
LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)
If you play games in love, then you are going to get your fingers burnt. Stop trying to push for answers which close ones are not yet ready to give. Filling in paperwork early can make and save you money.
SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)
You are such a good judge of people, but lately you have found it hard to trust your own opinion. In fact, you’ve chosen to rely on others instead. Taking chances on your own instincts today can see miracles occur.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)
Be open to new opinions today. It can make all the difference as to whether you live life or simply exist in the days and weeks ahead. The need to make peace with a family member could see you eating humble pie.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)
Don’t push away those you love just to get a reaction. They may not be as easy to get back on side as you think. Study and research you do this week can and will give you the edge on the competition.
AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)
You’ve had so much to juggle lately, but you should be proud of what a good job you’ve been doing. Now is the time to let yourself relax a little and to enjoy the benefits of your hard work, starting with some ‘me’ time.
PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)
You don’t really know if you have funds to spare, or if you need to be saving and working to a budget. If you don’t know, then find out Pisces. It’s the key to you looking and feeling in control of your life.

If You Were Born Today, October 13th
You have a sharp mind and a great love of debate, justice, and the law. Always seeking answers and balance, you are inquisitive and not afraid to express contrary opinions, yet you do so in a rather tactful manner. You are both practical and responsible. Not afraid of hard work, you can be quite successful in your career, although you need a strong sense that you are moving forward in order to feel motivated. If you are expressing a tendency to scatter your energies, it’s a sure sign that you are lacking this kind of motivation. With your quiet demeanor, it might surprise people who don’t know you well that you possess strong convictions.

From The Astrology Room
ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)
You may think that your close ones are not supporting you, but in actual fact they are working behind the scenes. Try not to make accusations you have no proof of.
TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)
You still seem to be reeling from some news you recently heard. You’re trying to work out what needs to be done to make you feel more in control. Continuing with your own dreams is the first step.
GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)
Do you need these changes you’re asking for? Or are you simply trying to show close ones that you have control. Try to work on keeping a happy medium for all over the coming days. Teamwork promises loyalty.
CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)
The opinions of others have been holding you back from admitting what and who really makes you happy. Remember that you are the one who has to live with the decisions you make.
LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)
Don’t listen to advice or gossip from those who you know only have half the story. Good luck awaits you financially, especially if you’re willing to sign up for a long term and not just a short term commitment.
VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)
Promises could well be broken, as many of the signs are not capable of giving the commitments they offer. This is not their fault, it’s the stars bringing out the nostalgic and dramatic side of our natures.
LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)
A situation which you have been growing tired of for some time simply vanishes from your life and you start to realise with relief that it only ever was a temporary thing rather than a permanent way of life.
SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)
There is so much you need to think about at the moment that your head must be spinning Scorpio. Knowing who you don’t want in your life is a good place to begin. Ring now to hear why it’s worth meeting up socially with old work contacts.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)
Life begins at the end of your comfort zone and as you’re a fire sign, that’s going to be a very dramatic starting point. Exams and tests upcoming can prove really successful, if you organise your time and don’t allow others to do it for you.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)
You thought life was falling apart, but actually it was just falling into place. Buying and selling go well at this time. It would be worth your while holding out for the real deal.
AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)
A better day to day life is slowly but surely evolving and this has much to do with the fact that you have finally found your voice. Friends could become something more for some of your sign, much to the surprise of all around.
PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)
I know you lost a lot of confidence at the beginning of the month, but now at last I see it’s coming back. I also see that you’ve learnt who not to listen to. Look your best tonight. You’ll be seeing someone you’ll want to impress.

A Little Humor for Your Day
The Plan
Does any of this sound familiar around here ???
- In the beginning there was the Plan.
- The plan was based on a set of Assumptions.
- And the Assumptions were without substance.
- And thus the Plan could not be sustained.
- And therefore darkness was upon the face of the Workers who are charged with carrying out the plan.
- And they spoke among themselves, saying, “This plan: It is a crock of sh*t, and it stinks of same.”
- And the Workers went unto their Supervisors and said, “It is a pail of dung, and we cannot live with the smell.”
- And the Supervisors went unto their Managers, saying, “It is a container of excrement, and it is very strong, such that none may abide by it.”
- And the Managers went unto their Directors, saying, “It is a vessel of fertilizer, and none are able to abide its strength.”
- And the Directors spoke among themselves, saying to one another, “It contains that which aids plant growth, and it is very strong.”
- And the Directors went to the Vice Presidents, saying unto them, “It promotes growth, and it is very powerful.”
- And the Vice Presidents went to the President, saying unto him, “This new plan will actively promote the growth and vigor of the company with very powerful effects.”
- And the President looked upon the Plan and saw that it was good. And the Plan became Policy.
And this is how sh*t comes to happen.

Ethics of The Craft
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“An it harm none, do what ye will” is considered the main tenant of Wicca. It is similar to the Golden Rule, in that it mandates that you can do whatever you want, but only if you do not harm anything, anyone or yourself in the process. This belief constantly reminds us that there are many consequences to our actions and we must consider all possible outcomes before acting. The Wiccan Rede thereby binds Wiccans to do the right thing, for if we don’t, then the Law of Three applies: “Whatever you do will return to you threefold”.
The Belief in Light & Dark
Most Witches acknowledge that there is “light” and “dark” to the universe. This polarity (light vs. dark) is part of the natural order of things and is not necessarily “evil” or “bad”. What is considered to be “light” are those events or processes which are beneficial, such as the birth of a healthy baby. Whereas, things that are “dark” are events that might be harmful. As an example, death is “dark” but it is part of the natural process of life and is not feared by Witches, but natural and accepted.
Evil
Evil is different from “dark” when it is used to describe human actions. When a person commits a certain action for personal gain, or to serve a personal end, it is considered “evil”. If a volcano erupts and destroys a village, this process would be thought of as “dark” but there was no evil or malicious intent on the part of the volcano. However, when an individual commits murder, for instance, this individual set out to harm another person, therefore, their action can be described as “evil”. It is not only the act, but the malicious intent that differentiates “evil” from “dark”
Balance
Witches believe in a joyful balance of all human functions. This outlook is perfectly expressed in the Charge of the Goddess, which is an integral part of most of the rituals of all Witches, “Let My worship be within the heart that rejoices; for behold, all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals, and therefore let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you.”
The Witch is always conscious that compassion must be partnered with power, humility with honor, and reverence with mirth. Love of life in all its forms, is the basic ethic of the Nature Religions. We are bound to honor and respect all living things and to serve the Life Force.
We practice rites to attune ourselves with the natural rhythm of life forces marked by the phases of the Moon, and the seasonal Quarters, and Cross Quarters.
We recognize that our intelligence gives us a unique responsibility toward our environment. We seek to live in harmony with Nature, in ecological balance offering fulfillment of life and consciousness within an evolutionary concept.
We acknowledge a depth of power far greater than that apparent to the average person. Because it is far greater than ordinary, it is sometimes called “supernatural,” but we see it as lying within that which is naturally potential to all.
We conceive of the Creative Power in the universe as manifesting through polarity – as masculine and feminine – and that this same Creative Power lies in all people, and functions through the interaction of the masculine and the feminine. We value neither above the other, knowing each to be supportive of the other. We value sex as pleasure, as the symbol and embodiment of life, and as one of the sources of energies used in magickal practice and religious worship.
We recognize both outer worlds and inner, or psychological, worlds sometimes known as the Spiritual World, the Collective Unconsciousness, Inner Planes, etc. – and we see in the inter-action of these two dimensions the basis for paranormal phenomena, and magickal exercises. We neglect neither dimension for the other, seeing both as necessary for our fulfillment.
We do not recognize any authoritarian hierarchy, but do honor those who teach, respect those who share their greater knowledge and wisdom, and acknowledge those who have courageously given of themselves in leadership.
We see religion, magick and wisdom in living as being united in the way one views the world and lives within it – a world view and philosophy of life which we identify as Witchcraft.
Calling oneself “witch” does not make a witch – but neither does heredity itself, nor the collecting of titles, degrees and initiations. A witch seeks to control the forces within her/himself that makes life possible in order to live wisely and well without harm to others and in harmony with nature.
We believe in the affirmation and fulfillment of life in a continuation of evolution and development of consciousness giving meaning to the Universe we know and our personal role within it.
We believe that we should seek within Nature that which is contributory to our health and well-being.
Till tomorrow, my sweets…..
Your Astronomy for Friday, October 13th
The Moon is in Cancer until 2:41 AM, after which the Moon is in Leo.
The Moon is void from 12:00 AM to 2:41 AM.
The Moon is waning and in its Last Quarter phase.
The Last Quarter Moon occurred yesterday, and the New Moon will occur on the 19th.
Moon in Leo
The Moon is traveling through Leo today. Shine and be proud! You rule right now!
The Moon in Leo speaks to our “inner child”. It’s a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention–when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It’s a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
The Sky This Week for October 13 to 15
The Summer Triangle in fall, a meteor shower, and other beautiful things to look for in the sky this week.
By Richard Talcott
Friday, October 13
The annual Orionid meteor shower is quickly ramping up toward its peak the morning of October 21. You already should be seeing a few shower members in the predawn sky, where the waning crescent Moon doesn’t offer much interference. To tell an Orionid from a sporadic meteor, trace the path of the “shooting star” backward. An Orionid meteor will appear to radiate from the northern part of the constellation Orion the Hunter.
Saturday, October 14
Saturn remains a tempting target in this week’s evening sky. The ringed planet stands nearly 20° above the southwestern horizon as darkness falls. Shining at magnitude 0.5, it appears significantly brighter than any of the background stars in its host constellation, Ophiuchus the Serpent-bearer. Of course, the best views of Saturn come through a telescope, which reveals a 16″-diameter globe surrounded by a spectacular ring system that spans 37″. But more significantly, the rings tilt 27.0° to our line of sight — the maximum angle possible — in mid-October. The rings haven’t appeared this open since 2003 and they won’t approach this tilt again until 2032. The steep angle offers superb views of ring structure.
Sunday, October 15
The variable star Algol in Perseus reaches minimum brightness at 1:25 a.m. EDT tomorrow morning. Observers on the East Coast who start watching around midevening can see the star’s brightness diminish by 70 percent over the course of about five hours. Those in western North America will see Algol brighten noticeably from late evening until dawn starts to light up the sky, when the star stands high in the west. This eclipsing binary system runs through a cycle from minimum (magnitude 3.4) to maximum (magnitude 2.1) and back every 2.87 days.
The Moon is currently in Leo
During this phase the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. This phase is best viewed an hour or 2 before the sunrise and can be quite beautiful if you’re willing to get up early. It can also be a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the edge where the illuminated portion meets the dark side, the craters and mountains cast long shadows making them easier to observe with a telescope or binoculars.
Your Daily Horoscopes for Thursday, October 12
Aries
This can be another day when you’d prefer to stick close to home and stay out of trouble, dear Aries! It’s a good time for accomplishing something practical, in fact, and for anything that involves counseling, consultation, or collaboration. Important or useful information can result. One-on-one communications can be quite successful and productive today. This is a strong time for prioritizing your long-term goals and gaining perspective. You might be considering other viewpoints with maturity and benefit from this willingness. Plans might be formed or fine-tuned and cemented now, particularly related to relationships, health, work, travel, or education. Loyalty and reliability are themes to emphasize and boost.
Taurus
While the morning is good for bringing an imaginative or creative spin to your work or projects, dear Taurus, as the day advances, you’re in an excellent position to lock something down or deal with the practical side of things. Do your best to take advantage of this steady, methodical, traditional energy. This is a time for truly seeing the value of patience, small but effective efforts, and a step by step pace. Good things can take time, and you are instinctively tuning into this truth today. Focus on the details and show your strong work ethic now. This is a good day for making plans, mainly related to work or health, but it’s also a time for gaining new and useful information that helps clarify these things for you. You might find yourself absorbed in a project or pursuit, especially if research or investigation is involved.
Gemini
You can be feeling playful and creative this morning, Gemini, but you’re quick to tap into the steady, productive energy of a Mercury-Saturn influence as the day progresses. Teaming up with someone can be advantageous if you have a clear goal in mind or if you’re focused on purposeful tasks. You can be especially focused on coming to a balance in a relationship, and negotiations are fair and fortunate. You’re in particularly good shape with communications, and someone may recognize you for being a good friend. Be reliable with others for best results now. Relationships can benefit from a serious conversation or a clearer definition, or you feel stronger through your association with someone. The secret to happiness later today lies in balance and patience.
Cancer
The Moon spends another day in your sign, dear Cancer, and emotions are more colorful than usual. Even so, there is a decidedly practical bent to the day. You’re in particularly good shape for organizing areas of your life related to the home, family, real estate, work and services, and habits or health, for which your thinking is especially clear. You’re more interested than usual in tackling chores and duties. Efforts to shape up your work or body can be productive and invigorating now. Information you discover today can clarify matters and may even benefit you now and for years to come!
While the morning inspires imagination and creativity, dear Leo, later today favors conservative moves and traditional methods. Activities related to commuting, teaching, writing, learning, and connecting can come into practical focus. People value your opinion and input even more than usual. Information coming in now helps clarify things for you, enables you to make a significant decision, or is otherwise especially useful to you. Projects benefit from attention to detail and an organized approach. Mental clarity feels great now! You also have a good eye for what’s most valuable and viable. Some of you could make a special, quality connection.
Virgo
You can come up with wonderful ideas to boost your business or to enjoy your earnings today, dear Virgo, with Mercury, your ruler, in supportive aspect with practical, realistic Saturn. As the day advances, you’re in particularly good shape for giving or receiving advice, learning something beneficial to you, and conveying your ideas to others. There is wonderful energy with you now for taking care of important business, especially if your finances, valuables, personal possessions, or home life can use some tidying and upkeep. Your eye for detail shines through now. People in your life are likely to notice and appreciate your spiritual maturity and intelligent viewpoint today. You could be focusing on organizing and straightening your home environment or routines with family, which can ultimately lead to improved inner clarity.
Libra
You are a uniquely engaging speaker or communicator this morning, dear Libra. You can delight in your discoveries or imagination now. The second half of the day, on the other hand, is particularly suitable and fortuitous for doing virtually any kind of technical work or taking care of business. Good advice or useful information is circulating now, and you’re tapping right in. In fact, your sense of what’s valuable and useful is strong. Somebody may be putting in a good word for you. Serious conversations make sense now, and they can be comforting as well. You have a no-nonsense approach to your life at the moment, and this can indeed work to your advantage. It’s a time to organize, sort, tidy, and prioritize in ways that improve your life and sense that you’re on top of things.
Scorpio
While you can delight in freeform thoughts and a dreamy approach to the world this morning, dear Scorpio, as the day advances, you’re in great shape for focusing on priorities. You’re also in an excellent position to learn useful information or gain clarity and insight into a matter that feels great. Self-discipline improves. Look for a particular project that requires a narrow or precise focus and apply this energy to it, if possible. Tie up loose ends and focus on tidying up and organizing your life so that you can put an end to guilty feelings. Money matters or taking special care of personal possessions can figure strongly now. Your resourcefulness now can lead you to valuable conclusions.
Sagittarius
You’re in a fabulous position to apply both imagination and common sense to a matter today, dear Sagittarius, and the support of or from friends is comforting. You gain clarity or insight about a friendship, goal, or project now that aids your decision-making process. Your self-discipline improves, and a steadfast, conservative approach wins points today. Socializing can be helpful and rewarding. Be moderate, steady, and reliable in your dealings with people and disciplined with your goals, planning ahead, to take full advantage of a Mercury-Saturn connection active now. You’re able to tap into the necessary patience to get important duties and chores out of the way so that you can gain inner clarity.
Capricorn
Particularly as the day advances, it plays in your favor, dear Capricorn, with Mercury in harmony with your ruler, Saturn. This aspect generates practical, useful energy and a stronger inclination to draw upon common sense, even if the morning is a little hazy. You’ll do best now in the areas of communicating and getting the job done. Interactions and information surfacing today can be exceptionally useful and an important point can be clarified for you. You’re communicating with authority and coming across very well. You are likely to be leaned upon or admired from afar, particularly for your sound mind and trustworthiness. Tie up loose ends and tidy up areas of your life that may be causing you guilt or dread. The Moon is in your partnership all day, drawing out your desire for companionship.
Aquarius
You are feeling particularly inspired and imaginative this morning, Aquarius. As the day progresses, however, you’re in excellent shape for getting serious and picking up truly handy information. This is a good time for assessing ideas and projects with a clearer head and a better feel for what’s both valuable and viable. This is also an excellent time for uninterrupted, solid work, beginning a long-term project, or cementing a business alliance or connection with an associate. Good news may arrive about publishing, studies, legal affairs, or travel for some of you. Consider areas of your life that can do with concentrated focus and attention to detail, and use this steady energy to take care of business. Teaming up to get something accomplished or brainstorming with others can be productive.
Pisces
The Moon is in your creative sector all day, and Mercury forms a parallel with Neptune this morning, dear Pisces, encouraging imagination and flights of fancy. However, it would be wise to tap into the useful energy of a Mercury-Saturn aspect as the day advances, which is quite practical and realistic. You could be brainstorming with someone and coming up with very workable ideas and plans. You are primarily concerned with the details and practical side of conversations and projects or tasks now, and you may be reassessing or fine-tuning recent plans. Expressing your more responsible and competent or mature side can have tremendous benefits for you at the moment. You quite readily become absorbed in what you’re doing, and research or digging deeper into a topic or idea is especially attractive. Order and predictability are themes now, and work issues seem to be coming together. It’s a good day to benefit from mature or realistic advice and for speaking to superiors.
Your Horoscopes for Friday, October 13th
Aries
Aries
You’re coming out of your shell with the Moon’s move into your playful solar fifth house, Aries. This transit becomes you, as you feel more in your element with the Moon in a fellow Fire sign (Leo). This transit brings easy energy for emotional and creative expression. If you’re not fighting the waves right now, you’re in touch with this nice flow. This is also an excellent day to make up for lost time with someone or to forgive or better understand a person in your life. You enjoy collaborating with others these days, but you’re also very focused on your work or projects, and it’s not always easy to juggle the two, which may become evident today. However, there’s no need to stress about this now. Tomorrow, Venus moves into your partnership sector, launching one of the best periods for close relationships in the year.
Taurus
Your mind is on your work or health and practical affairs, but your heart is with play and relationships right now, dear Taurus. Do watch for talking ahead of yourself. While you can feel a little divided, you’re still in good shape today. The Moon moves into your home and family sector, and it’s important to focus on strengthening your feelings of support and security at this time of the lunar cycle. This can happen on both outer and inner levels. Centering yourself makes sense now since inner assurance will go a long way towards meeting upcoming busier days with confidence. There can be a stronger need for close loved ones and family today, as well as familiar situations. For now, some self-pampering and nest building will do you good.
Gemini
Your mind is on fun and games these days, dear Gemini, and you want to share your ideas with others, but a good part of you would prefer to stick with the familiar. You’re still in a stage of building your confidence, which can lead to some choppiness but shouldn’t stop you from prospering today. The Moon’s move into your communications sector increases your interest in reaching out to others, making connections, and keeping busy. Do keep in mind that you might experience remorse for sharing too much later on, but if kept in check, you can thoroughly enjoy the conversations you have now. This is a day for honoring your need for more variety and stimulation.
Cancer
You’re not as ready to communicate or share as you’re letting on today, dear Cancer, which can confuse a person or two! Possible mixed signals aside, however, this should be a good time for settling in or building something important to you with increased patience. You could be focusing on adding more comfort and padding to your life now. The Moon moves into the sign just ahead of yours which can have the effect of downplaying emotions enough to help you focus on practical priorities. Seek out earthy activities that help you feel present and grounded at this time in the lunar cycle for best results.
Leo
If allowed some personal space, aside from minor challenges, the day can play very much in your favor, dear Leo. The Moon enters your sign early on, bringing you out of an emotional slumber of sorts. Emotional needs take top billing now, and while it’s an essential time for acknowledging them, be careful not to seek out too much in the way of instant gratification, as this can take power out of this part of the lunar cycle. Instead, aim to recognize and attach yourself to true emotions now. Aim to embrace your feelings rather than be under their control. As well, it’s important to avoid talking ahead of yourself today.
Virgo
You’re more action than talk these days, dear Virgo, which is not your usual state but is generally working for you right now. The Moon moves into your privacy sector today, and this can draw your attention to behind the scenes, background, and private matters. This is an integral part of the lunar cycle in which you find ways to rest, reflect, and regroup. Don’t waste your time trying to prove to yourself that you’re over something from the past. It’s better to face it and jump right into the work on letting go. In fact, excellent energy is with you today for doing just that. Take time making decisions and time out for emotional recharging.
Libra
Watch for talking ahead of yourself today, dear Libra. Be sure you’re “all in” before revealing something or making a commitment. Part of you wants to spill all, and another part is more withholding or private, and you can’t please both sides. With the Moon changing signs today, your emotional attention turns to friendships, social life, happiness, hopes, and happiness goals. Recognize your needs to mingle now for best results, as this is a natural part of the larger lunar cycle. Keeping an open mind and your options open can invite positive, interesting experiences.
Scorpio
You’re more action than talk right now, dear Scorpio, with Mars in harmony with your sign and Mercury in your private solar twelfth house. This can work well for you these days, although today, you may throw someone off course by not speaking about something and doing it anyway! Also today, the Moon moves into your career and reputation sector, and with responsibilities strong in your mind, or new ones surfacing, it’s probably best to tackle them promptly. It’s a day for giving yourself a gentle challenge. Try not to waste time trying to convince yourself that you don’t care what others think of you, and instead, jump straight into tasks that build your confidence in your performance or what you’re currently doing.
Sagittarius
You’re strongly motivated to achieve your goals these days, dear Sagittarius, but your mind just isn’t on the same page today. The Moon’s move into your adventure sector is a happy, easy one for you, however, which is a nice change from recent activity that has been somewhat limiting or challenging. You quickly find ways to enjoy a change of pace, however big or small. This can be quite an outgoing, adventurous day, in fact, if you go along with this flow, even if the settings you’re currently in are pretty usual or routine fare. Venus is set to move into your social sector tomorrow, launching a quite excellent several-week cycle for enhancing or forming friendships.
Capricorn
You’re drawn to exciting or non-routine activities and ideas these days, dear Capricorn, but you could find that your mind is stubbornly and squarely on your work or responsibilities! Part of you is devil may care, and the other is fretting over your performance. While you may not be able to satisfy either drive fully without feeling some level of restlessness or dissatisfaction, you may be able to divide your time just enough to get a bit of both. The Moon moves into an introspective area of your solar chart today, and this part of the lunar cycle is excellent for learning both about yourself and important people in your life through observation. You’re looking to get to the root of problems, and you have much to discover.
Aquarius
Do your best to avoid talking ahead of yourself today, dear Aquarius. You may do the part of you that’s busy strategizing and planning a disservice if you spill the beans impulsively! You’re more excited and enthusiastic about your projects or interests these days than usual, but you’ll also do well for yourself if you hold off on quick conclusions until you’re truly on board. Also today, the Moon moves into your opposing sign for a couple of days. This part of the lunar cycle is excellent for gaining perspective and seeking out balance by considering your life from a different angle — and perhaps from a partner’s point of view. The need for others emerges clearly now. Sometimes this transit prompts the seeking of advice or increased activity with a companion.
Pisces
Especially this morning, there are excellent influences with you for personal appeal and magnetism, dear Pisces. This can also translate to personalized attention, as others seem to value the very energy you radiate naturally. There is increased imagination and compassion with you now, and you’re drawn to activities that reinforce your own sympathetic and caring nature. Even so, the Moon moves into the part of your solar chart that emphasizes the details and practical side of your life, and this can also be a great day for fixing problems and tying up loose ends. Enjoy the extra boost of motivation to get your life organized now.
Your Personal Daily Tarot Card
The Hermit
The Hermit denotes a need to have some space between you and the everyday hustle and bustle of our busy world. The Hermit needs to retreat. Indeed, happiness for The Hermit requires seclusion, freedom from material wants, and time for intense introspection. The answers The Hermit needs cannot be found in our physical world. The truths he seeks are internal, spiritual, and the distraction of a well developed social life can only impede his quest for his personal truths. Still, although not anything remotely resembling extroversion, The Hermit does sometimes need to share time with others; so he can both learn and teach, guide and be guided. The Hermit’s time spent amongst people depletes his energy rapidly. To avoid mental and physical overload he has to retreat from social settings quickly.
Your Personal Daily Love Tarot Card
The Fool
You deserve a partnership that deepens as you get to know each other. Wait for the person who has risen above commitment immaturity if commitment is your desire. The Fool reminds us that dating someone is not a mistake. It is falling in love and marrying them if it is not right. If your long-term relationship is encountering a difficult patch, now is the time to work together to rebuild.
Your Personal Daily Erotic Tarot Card
The Judgement
The Judgement card indicates that you’ve had some sexual hang-ups in the past, but you’re working toward getting over them. This is a period of transition, and although you’re doing the work, you may not be getting the exact results you desire. Forgive yourself for past missteps in order to take a sexual step forward today. Being afraid to express your true erotic self can even effect other areas of your life, so getting beyond your sexual inhibitions translates into a happier overall existence.
Your Daily Charm
Today’s Meaning:
A course of events that cannot be altered has been set in motion within this aspect. Accept whatever happens in the near future and do not waste your time fretting about it–you can do nothing.
General Description:
This was a favorite charm in Egypt, worn in order to frustrate magicians, sorcerers and evil wishers from bewitching the wearer and stealing the soul from the heart; for it was the general belief that if the soul left the heart, the body would soon fade away and perish. The ancient Egyptians also believed that, after death, the heart was taken, in the underworld, and weighed against the symbols of the law; if found perfect, it was restored to the body, which at once came to life again and enjoyed everlasting felicity.
All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.
Earth Sky News for Thursday, October 12 – What bright star flashes red and green?
onight, check out one of the flashiest stars in the sky. Every year in northern autumn, we get questions from people in the Northern Hemisphere who see a bright star twinkling with red and green flashes, low in the northeastern sky as seen from Northern Hemisphere locations. That star is likely Capella, which is actually a golden star.
In fact, if you could travel to it in space, you’d find that Capella is actually two golden stars, both with roughly the same surface temperature as our local star, the sun . . . but both larger and brighter than our sun.
So here is a golden point of light that flashes red and green when it’s low in the sky. Why does it do that?
The reality is that every star in the sky undergoes the same process as Capella, to produce its colorful twinkling. That is, every star’s light must shine through Earth’s atmosphere before reaching our eyes. But not every star flashes as noticeably as Capella. The flashes are happening because Capella is low in the sky in the evening at this time of year. And, when you look at an object low in the sky, you’re looking through more atmosphere than when the same object is overhead.
The atmosphere splits or “refracts” the star’s light, just as a prism splits sunlight.
So that’s where Capella’s red and green flashes are coming from … not from the star itself … but from the refraction of its light by our atmosphere. When you see Capella higher in the sky, you’ll find that these glints of red and green will disappear.
By the way, why are these flashes of color so noticeable with Capella? The reason is simply that it’s a bright star. It’s the 6th brightest star in Earth’s sky, not including our sun.
Capella is in the constellation Auriga the Charioteer, but since antiquity it has carried the name “Goat Star.” Capella climbs upward through the night, and soars high overhead in the wee hours before dawn.
Bottom line: If you’re in Earth’s Northern Hemisphere, a bright star twinkling with red and green flashes, low in the northeastern sky on October evenings, is probably Capella.
The Witches Digest for Thursday, October 12, Part 2
(The Witches Guide to Thursdays)
Today is Thursday, October 12
Thursday is the day of the planet Jupiter, dedicated to Thunor(Thor), God of thunder and agricultural work. His parallels in various European traditions are Zeus, Taranis, Perun, Perkunas and St. Olaf. The faith of the Northern Tradition holds Thursday sacred, just as Islam reveres Friday, Judaism the Sabbath(calculated from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday), and Christianity, Sunday. This is why almost all adages about Thursday are positve, such as “Thursday’s child has far to go,” “Sneeze on Thursday, something better,” or “Cut nails on Thursday for wealth.” Thursday rules controlled optimism, energetic growth, physical well-being and material success.
On Thursday, October 12th, We celebrate the God, Cernunnos
Cernunnos
Wild God of the Forest
Cernunnos is a horned god found in Celtic mythology. He is connected with male animals, particularly the stag in rut, and this has led him to be associated with fertility and vegetation. Depictions of Cernunnos are found in many parts of the British Isles and western Europe. He is often portrayed with a beard and wild, shaggy hair — he is, after all, the lord of the forest.
With his mighty antlers, Cernunnos is a protector of the forest and master of the hunt.
He is a god of vegetation and trees in his aspect as the Green Man, and a god of lust and fertility when connected with Pan, the Greek satyr. In some traditions, he is seen as a god of death and dying, and takes the time to comfort the dead by singing to them on their way to the spirit world.
History and Worship of Cernunnos
In Margaret Murray’s 1931 book, God of the Witches, she posits that Herne the Hunter is a manifestation of Cernunnos. Because he is found only in Berkshire, and not in the rest of the Windsor Forest area, Herne is considered a “localized” god — and could indeed be the Berkshire interpretation of Cernunnos. During the Elizabethan age, Cernunnos appears as Herne in Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor. He also embodies fealty to the realm, and guardianship of royalty.
In some traditions of Wicca, the cycle of seasons follows the relationship between the Horned God — Cernunnos — and the Goddess.
During the fall, the Horned God dies, as the vegetation and land go dormant, and in the spring, at Imbolc, he is resurrected to impregnate the fertile goddess of the land. However, this relationship is a relatively new Neopagan concept, and there is no scholarly evidence to indicate that ancient peoples might have celebrated this “marriage” of the Horned God and a mother goddess.
Because of his horns (and the occasional depiction of a large, erect phallus), Cernunnos has often been misinterpreted by fundamentalists as a symbol of Satan. Certainly, at times, the Christian church has pointed to the Pagan following of Cernunnos as “devil worship.” This is in part due to nineteenth-century paintings of Satan which included large, ram-like horns much like those of Cernunnos.
Today, many Pagan traditions honor Cernunnos as an aspect of the God, the embodiment of masculine energy and fertility and power.
A Prayer to Cernunnos
God of the green,
Lord of the forest,
I offer you my sacrifice.
I ask you for your blessing.
You are the man in the trees,
the green man of the woods,
who brings life to the dawning spring.
You are the deer in rut,
mighty Horned One,
who roams the autumn woods,
the hunter circling round the oak,
the antlers of the wild stag,
and the lifeblood that spills upon
the ground each season.
God of the green,
Lord of the forest,
I offer you my sacrifice.
I ask you for your blessing.
Honoring Cernunnos in Ritual
If your tradition calls for you to honor Cernunnos in ritual – especially around the season of the Beltane sabbat – be sure to read John Beckett’s article at Patheos, The Cernunnos Ritual.
Beckett says, “His presence, which had been mild but undeniable since we started setting up (what, you think a Forest God is going to sit quietly outside the door till he gets a proper invitation?) became overwhelming. Someone shouted. Someone got up and began to dance. Then another got up, and another, and another. Before long we had a whole line of people dancing, spinning, and chanting around the altar.
Cernunnos! Cernunnos! Cernunnos!”
Juniper, at Walking the Hedge, has an absolutely lovely and moving ritual worth reading about called A Devotional Ritual to Cernunnos. She says, “I call to Him with feeling, with love with desire. I call until I feel His presence, I do not assume a few words of poetry will be enough and carry on. I call until the hair on the back of my neck stands up and goosebumps run down my arms.
I call until I can smell His scent on the air… When Cernunnos has arrived I thank Him with gifts, by showing Him what offerings I have brought for Him and placing it at the foot of the god-stang.”
⦁ Ancient Greek – hemera Dios – “day of Zeus”
The name is derived from Old English and Middle English Thuresday (with loss of -n-, first in northern dialects, from influence of Old Norse Þorsdagr) meaning “Thor’s Day”. Thunor, Donar (German, Donnerstag) and Thor are derived from the name of the Germanic god of thunder, Thunraz, equivalent to Jupiter in the interpretation romance.
In most Romance languages, the day is named after the Roman god Jupiter, who was the god of sky and thunder. In Latin, the day was known as Iovis Dies, “Jupiter’s Day”. In Latin, the genitive or possessive case of Jupiter was Iovis/Jovis and thus in most Romance languages it became the word for Thursday: Italian giovedì, Spanish jueves, French jeudi, Sardinian jòvia, Catalan dijous, and Romanian joi.
This is also reflected in the p-Celtic Welsh dydd Iau.
The astrological and astronomical sign of the planet Jupiter is sometimes used to represent Thursday.
Since the Roman god Jupiter was identified with Thunor (Norse Thor in northern Europe), most Germanic languages name the day after this god: Torsdag in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, Hósdagur/Tórsdagur in Faroese, Donnerstag in German or Donderdag in Dutch. Finnish and Northern Sami, both non-Germanic (Uralic) languages, uses the borrowing “Torstai” and “Duorastat”. In the extinct Polabian Slavic language, it was perundan, Perun being the Slavic equivalent of Thor.
There are a number of modern names imitating the naming of Thursday after an equivalent of “Jupiter” in local tradition. In most of the languages of India, the word for Thursday is Guruvar- var meaning day and guru being the style for Bṛhaspati, guru to the gods and regent of the planet Jupiter. In Thai, the word is Wan Pharuehatsabodi—referring to the Hindu deity Bṛhaspati, also associated with Jupiter. En was an old Illyrian deity and in his honor in the Albanian language Thursday is called “Enjte”. In the Nahuatl language, Thursday is Tezcatlipotōnal meaning “day of Tezcatlipoca”.
Witchery for Your Thursday
Today is the day for prosperity work of all kinds. It can also be used for healing work, whether that is a physical healing of an illness or an emotional healing. Also remember that you have to follow up your healing work and prosperity magick and physical action.
I can’t tell you the number of times I have met new witches who complain to me that their prosperity spell or “I need a better job” spell did not work as they expected. They’ll ramble on and on about how much time and money they spent working their magick….but, alas, they had no glorious manifestation of wealth or fabulous job that suddenly dropped out of the sky and landed in their laps.
Then, when I gently ask them, “Did you enchant your resume or application when you filled it out? Did you do a little confidence-boosting spellwork when you went to apply for the job or went to the interview?” typically they give me a blank, confused stare.
Nine times out of ten, their response is, “You mean I have to go out and actually look for the job too?” Um, yes, my dear, you certainly do. Magick follows the path of least resistance, which means it’s going to manifest along the simplest, quickest route. Get out there and hit the pavement. See what you can find. Times are tough and competition for good jobs is fierce, so you need whatever edge you can get. For folks like us, we’re going to get the edge by using our magick and our spellcraft.
Thursdays have such a rich source of magick for us to draw upon that, honestly, the sky is the limit. This is the day associated with the gods of the sky and heavens, after all. Get to know these deities and add their wisdom and magick into your days
Try wearing some honeysuckle-scented perfume to encourage prosperity. Bewitch someone by wearing deep royal blue or brighten up a dreary day by wearing lucky, prosperity-drawing green. Brew up a pot of mint tea to help increase your cash flow. Try adding a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon to an unscented candle to encourage some fast cash. Bake up a loaf of wheat bread for the family, and celebrate abundance and be thankful for all that you have.
Conjure up a witchy craft and create a philter or two for your magickal needs. Work with the deities and the magickal plants corresponding with Thursday.
How did the energies of the plants of Jupiter enhance your magick? What did you learn by working with Juno, Jove, or Zeus? The truth is that by adding these new techniques and information into your spellcasting repertoire, you will indeed advance your skills, thereby moving up in the ranks to become a more adept magickal practitioner
Just by believing in yourself and working toward creating abundance, health, and prosperity, you have already begun to transform your outlook on life. Put your game face on; think positively. Work with Thor for perseverance and courage, and apply those qualities to your own prosperity spells and healing witchery. Break out the tarot cards; How could you incorporate that symbolism into other spells of your own design?
Use your imagination, check Thursday’s correspondence list, and see what other bewitching things you can conjure up for prosperity magick all by yourself. Call on the gods and goddess of Thursday and bring some positive change, abundance, health, and prosperity into your life!
The Magick of the Fourth Quarter
(From the waning half moon until the dark of the moon.)
This is the dark time of the moon. You may find that your psychic talents take a little vacation during the dark phases of the moon, or, on the other hand, they may come roaring to life with an all-out bombardment on your senses. Personally, I have found that abilities such as empathy and psychometry are more pronounced at this time. Why, you may wonder? Well, I have found that this type of psychic ability forces you to look within and to be still as the information comes to you— what better time than in the waning moon, when your powers are focused internally? Magickally, now is the occasion to tackle serious issues, such as extreme protection magick, bindings, or banishings, and keeping away criminals, prowlers, or stalkers. Casting your spells in the final days of the moon’s cycle (when the moon is not visible at all) will increase the force behind your banishing and protective magick. This phase of the moon is often linked to the darker aspects of the Goddess, when she is a spiritual warrior; again, Hecate is a good one to work with in this phase, but you can also call on Sekhmet, the Morrigan, or even Kali, if you are really feeling brave.
Fourth Quarter Moon Spell
Finally, here is a spell for the final phase of the moon. This is the Crone’s moon, and at this time your psychic gifts may be at their strongest. As the energy turns to a hushed, waiting mode, it doesn’t mean it’s gone, just that it is extremely focused and internal. So if you aren’t paying attention, you may not pick up on those psychic impressions. If this is a problem for you, ask the wise old Crone for her assistance. As far as magick is concerned, this is the time to deal with those more serious issues. Check out the final line of this spell and adjust as necessary for your purposes; for example, the word “protection” can be easily switched to “banishing.”
The Crone’s moon grows smaller at the passing of each eve.
For this magick to work, in myself I must believe.
Charms performed now require a wisdom most sublime
The protection spell is now cast, sealed up with a rhyme.
That orbed maiden with white fire laden whom mortals call the moon.
The More You Know – Samhain is Not a God
Every year, usually starting around September, I start getting emails about “Samhain, the Celtic god of death,” despite the fact that Samhain is not a death deity at all, but the name of a Pagan holiday that coincides with Halloween and is a great time of year to stock up on candy corn. So what we’re going to do today is talk a little bit about the rumor that Samhain is some sort of evil scary demonic death god, and clear up the rumors and misconceptions.
Let’s get started.
The Chick Tract Issue
Way back in the late 1980s, I managed a music store in a mall in the Bible belt. It was the sort of mall where very religious people would show up first thing in the morning and wander around handing out little pamphlets telling all of us we were going to hell for one reason or another. I wasn’t singled out for being Pagan, they were equal-opportunity proselytizers, but by the time I quit working there, I had an entire shoebox full of tracts that I had saved. Most of them were produced by Jack Chick, and Chick tracts were a special form of hilarious.
My favorite one was the one about Halloween, and why it was so evil to celebrate it. The tract, complete with illustrations, explained, “October 31st was celebrated by the Druids with many human sacrifices and a festival honoring their sun god and Samhain, the lord of the dead. They believed that the sinful souls of those who died during the year were in a place of torment, and would be released only if Samhain was pleased with their sacrifices.
”
Yep. Samhain, the Celtic god of the dead! He wants your souls!
Except here’s the problem – well, one of several problems – with the tract: Samhain isn’t a Celtic god of the dead.
Celtic Mythological Figures
Okay, let’s start by clearing up a couple of things. There may have been, at some point in Celtic mythology, a minor hero named Sawan or possibly Samain, who could have maybe played a role in the Irish myth cycles.
In the legend of Balor of the Evil Eye, Balor steals a magical cow, the Glas Gamhain. Depending on which retelling of the story you read, the cow could have belonged to Goibniu the blacksmith (a variation on Lugh), or possibly Cian, a son of Dian Cecht, the god of medicine, and part of the Tuatha de Danaan.
In Lady Gregory’s translation of The Mabinogion, the Welsh myth cycles, she describes Goibniu and Cian as brothers, and adds a third brother, Samain, into the story. According to the Gregory translation, Samain was in charge of watching the magical cow when Balor stole it. Although Samain (alternately, Sawen or Mac Samthainn) appears in a few versions of the story, depending on who translated it and when, he does not appear in all of them. Regardless, even in the ones that do include him, he is a very obscure and minor character, and certainly not a deity. In fact, most lists of Celtic language variants don’t mention him at all. He’s just not that important – he’s a guy who lost his brother’s magical cow.
The Celts and Death Gods
When we’re talking about gods and goddesses from different pantheons, it’s important to keep in mind that there’s no easy way to parallel them across cultures.
In other words, while both Thor and Mars may be deities of war, they’re not the same, and can’t really be compared to one another, because each is unique to the cultural and societal context of the people who followed them. Likewise, many cultures have had gods of death, or deities who were at least associated with the underworld, but that doesn’t mean they’re all the same.
The Celts certainly didn’t shy away from the dark side of things. They had deities that were in charge of all kinds of murky things – the Morrighan, for example, was a goddess who decided whether you died in battle or survived the fight. Likewise, in Wales, Gwynn ap Nudd is a deity of the underworld, and Arawn is the king of the realm of the afterlife. Manannan mac Lir is associated with the spirit world, and the realm between it and the lands of man.
The Cailleach is connected to the darker half of the year, disasters and storms, and the dying of the crops in the fields.
However, one thing the Celts didn’t have was a god named Samhain assigned to death.
Where Did This Death God Thing Start, Anyway?
As near as anyone can determine, it looks like the whole Samhain-as-God-of-Death rumor started around the 1770s, when a British colonel and military surveyor named Charles Vallancey wrote a series of books in which he tried to prove that the people of Ireland actually originated in Armenia. Vallancey’s scholarship was sketchy at best, and part of his work referenced a deity named Samain or Sabhun.
Unfortunately, Vallancey’s writing was so fancifully bad that within just a few decades, everyone who read it admitted that it was full of completely groundless conclusions, and thus, pretty much every one of his claims and assertions were suspect. The Quarterly Review, a literary publication that ran for much of the 1800s, said that Vallancey “wrote more nonsense than any man of his time.” However, that didn’t stop numerous writers from quoting Vallancey’s work in the nineteenth century, including one Godfrey Higgins, who used Vallancey’s writings to claim the Irish had actually come from India, and so the myth was perpetuated.
The origins of this rumor having begun with Vallancey’s work was uncovered in 1994, by a folklorist named W.J. Bethancourt III, in his essay Halloween: Myths, Monsters and Devils. If there are any earlier references to Samhain as a death deity, no one has found them yet.
So What Is Samhain?
So all your evangelical and fundamentalist friends think Samhain is a Celtic god of death, because this bunk has been perpetuated for ages – and they’re probably pronouncing it wrong too, like “Sam Hain.” What in the world are you going to tell them?
Well, you can start by telling them that Samhain isn’t a god at all. You can tell them that the idea of Samhain being a god was based on false, inaccurate scholarship. You can explain that Samhain, for most modern Pagans, is a time to mark the end of the fertile season, and to embrace the darkness of the coming winter.
You can, if it fits in with your traditions, discuss how you honor your ancestors to celebrate Samhain, or how you work with the spirit world.
Samhain is many things to many people in the Pagan community… but one thing it’s not? A Celtic god of death.
Ritual Honoring the Harvest’s End
Samhain represents, among other things, the end of the harvest season. If you haven’t picked it by Samhain, you probably won’t be eating it! The gardens have died off by now, and where we once saw lush green plants, there is nothing left but dry and dead stalks. The perennials have shut down for the season too, going dormant so that they may return to us in the spring. Animals are brought in from the fields for the winter — and if you’ve ever had a spider come wandering into your living room one chilly October night, you know that even the insects are trying to find a place to stay warm.
If we had lived a few hundreds of years ago, we would not only have brought our cows and sheep in from the pastures. Most likely we’d slaughter a few of them, as well as some pigs and goats, smoking or salting the meat so it would last through the cold months. Our grain that we picked back at Lughnasadh has been baked into bread, and all of our herbs have been gathered, and hang from the rafters in the kitchen. The harvest is over, and now it’s time to settle in for winter with the coziness of a warm fireplace, heavy blankets, and big pots of comfort food on the stovetop.
If you want to celebrate Samhain as the time of harvest’s end, you can do so as a single ritual, or as the first of three days of ceremony. If you don’t have a permanent altar in place, set up a table to leave in place for the three days prior to Samhain. This will act as a your family’s temporary altar for the Sabbat.
Here’s What You’ll Need
Decorate the altar with symbols of late fall, such as:
Skulls, skeletons, grave rubbings, ghosts
Harvest food such as pumpkins, squash, root vegetables
Nuts and berries, dark breads
Dried leaves and acorns
A cornucopia filled with an abundance of fruit and veggies
Mulled cider, wine, or mead
Hold Your Ritual
To begin your ceremony, prepare a meal for the family — and this is something that everyone can get involved in.
Put emphasis on fruits and vegetables, and wild game meat if available. Also make sure you have a loaf of a dark bread like rye or pumpernickel and a cup of apple cider or wine. Set the dinner table with candles and a fall centerpiece, and put all the food on the table at once. Consider the dinner table a sacred space.
Gather everyone around the table, and say:
Tonight is the first of three nights,
on which we celebrate Samhain.
It is the end of the harvest, the last days of summer,
and the cold nights wait on the other side for us.
The bounty of our labor, the abundance of the harvest,
the success of the hunt, all lies before us.
We thank the earth for all it has given us this season,
and yet we look forward to winter,
a time of sacred darkness.
Take the cup of cider or wine, and lead everyone outside. Make this a ceremonial and formal occasion. If you have a vegetable garden, great! Go there now — otherwise, just find a nice grassy spot in your yard. Each person in the family takes the cup in turn and sprinkles a little bit of cider onto the earth, saying:
Summer is gone, winter is coming.
We have planted and
we have watched the garden grow,
we have weeded,
and we have gathered the harvest.
Now it is at its end.
If you have any late-fall plants still waiting to be picked, gather them up now. Collect a bundle of dead plants and use them to make a straw man or woman. If you follow a more masculine path, he may be your King of Winter, and rule your home until spring returns. If you follow the Goddess in her many forms, make a female figure to represent the Goddess as hag or crone in winter.
Once that is done, go back inside and bring your King of Winter into your home with much pomp and circumstance. Place him on your table and prop him up with a plate of his own, and when you sit down to eat, serve him first. Begin your meal with the breaking of the dark bread, and make sure you toss a few crumbs outside for the birds afterwards. Keep the King of Winter in a place of honor all season long — you can put him back outside in your garden on a pole to watch over next spring’s seedlings, and eventually burn him at your Beltane celebration.
When you are finished with your meal, put the leftovers out in the garden. Wrap up the evening by playing games, such as bobbing for apples or telling spooky stories before a bonfire.
God of Life,
and Giver of Life –
Yet is the knowledge of thee,
the knowledge of Death.
Open wide, I pray thee,
the Gates through which all must pass.
Let our dear ones who have gone before
Return this night to make merry with us.
And when our tim comes, as it must,
O thou the Comforter,
the Consoler,
the Giver of Peace and Rest,
We will enter thy realms gladly and unafraid;
For we know that when rested and refreshed among our dear ones
We will be reborn again by thy grace,
and the grace of the Great Mother.
Let it be in the same place and the same time as our beloved ones,
And may we meet, and know, and remember,
And love them again.
Descend, we pray thee, in thy servant and priest.”
Amazing Grace
Amazing grace, how sweet the Earth
that bore a witch like me!
I once was burned, now I survive,
was hung and now I sing.
T’was grace that drew down the moon
and grace that raised the seas.
The magic in the people’s will
will set our Mother free.
We face the East and breathe the winds
that move across this earth.
From gentle breeze to hurricane
our breath will bring forth the change.
Turn towards the South and feel the fire
that burns in you and me.
The spirit’s flame will rise again
and burn eternally.
We greet the West, our souls awash
in tides of primal birth.
Our tears and blood, our pain and love
will cleanse and heal the earth.
Reach into the North and know your roots
down deep ancestral caves.
We find the wisdom of the Crone,
Of circles we are made.
Amazing earth, enduring life,
from death into rebirth.
T’is earth I am and earth I love
and earth I’ll always be.
Amazing grace, how sweet the Earth
The Moon is in Cancer.
The Moon is waning and in its Waning Gibbous phase until 8:25 AM, after which the Moon is in its Last Quarter phase.
The Last Quarter Moon occurs today at 8:25 AM, and the New Moon will occur on the 19th.
Moon in Cancer
The Moon is traveling through Cancer today. Beware of mood swings. Cook some soul food. Cuddle up with someone.
The restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. Feelings of belonging and safety are what motivate us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.
The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.
The Sky This Week for October 12 to 15
The Summer Triangle in fall, a meteor shower, and other beautiful things to look for in the sky this week.
Thursday, October 12
Last Quarter Moon occurs at 8:25 a.m. EDT. It rose around 11:30 p.m. local daylight time yesterday evening, which gives North American observers a chance to see it almost precisely half-lit before this morning’s dawn. Earth’s only natural satellite appears among the background stars of southern Gemini.
Mars is hot on the trail of Venus, and crosses the border between Leo and Virgo today. Mars also will have some nice conjunctions with the Maiden’s stars, but they’ll occur at a slower pace thanks to the Red Planet’s more sluggish orbit.
Venus appears 0.8° northeast of the 4th-magnitude star Beta (b) Virginis this morning.
Friday, October 13
The annual Orionid meteor shower is quickly ramping up toward its peak the morning of October 21. You already should be seeing a few shower members in the predawn sky, where the waning crescent Moon doesn’t offer much interference. To tell an Orionid from a sporadic meteor, trace the path of the “shooting star” backward. An Orionid meteor will appear to radiate from the northern part of the constellation Orion the Hunter.
Saturday, October 14
Saturn remains a tempting target in this week’s evening sky. The ringed planet stands nearly 20° above the southwestern horizon as darkness falls. Shining at magnitude 0.5, it appears significantly brighter than any of the background stars in its host constellation, Ophiuchus the Serpent-bearer. Of course, the best views of Saturn come through a telescope, which reveals a 16″-diameter globe surrounded by a spectacular ring system that spans 37″. But more significantly, the rings tilt 27.0° to our line of sight — the maximum angle possible — in mid-October. The rings haven’t appeared this open since 2003 and they won’t approach this tilt again until 2032. The steep angle offers superb views of ring structure.
Sunday, October 15
The variable star Algol in Perseus reaches minimum brightness at 1:25 a.m. EDT tomorrow morning. Observers on the East Coast who start watching around midevening can see the star’s brightness diminish by 70 percent over the course of about five hours. Those in western North America will see Algol brighten noticeably from late evening until dawn starts to light up the sky, when the star stands high in the west. This eclipsing binary system runs through a cycle from minimum (magnitude 3.4) to maximum (magnitude 2.1) and back every 2.87 days.
The Moon in Cancer: Sensitive, Nurturing, Loyal
Videos, New Moon, Moon, Full Moon, Cancer, Astrology
Before we get into talking about the Cancer Moon, let’s start off with a little bit about the Moon itself. In Astrology, the Moon is considered a planet — and it’s the fastest moving one at that! Because it moves so quickly, it moves through each of the 12 zodiac signs once every month. Most of us know what our Sun sign is, but what your Moon sign? If you don’t know yours, you can use our FREE Cosmic Profile to learn about your lunar sign, your rising sign, your Tarot birth card, and more! Who knows — YOU could be a Cancer Moon sign!
When the Moon is in Cancer
Regardless of what your Sun or Moon signs are, for a couple of days a month we’re all under the influence of the Cancer Moon. We’ll feel a little bit more tender, and more vulnerable than we do during other times of the month. You’ll have the urge to put up stronger walls between you and others in order to protect yourself. This is one of Cancer’s tricks — living behind your castle walls so you can feel safe. So, during the Moon in Cancer transit, you’ll feel more protective not only over yourself, but also those you love.
Cancer is the sign of mothering energy, so during this Moon you’ll feel a stronger urge to nurture and care for everyone as if everyone was one of your children. Domestic matters will feel more important than usual, and you will find yourself wanting to be at home surrounded by your loved ones. This is a great time to invite people over to share stories over a meal, or gather friends for a night of games.
Emotions will be heightened during the Cancer Moon, and it’s easy become moody if you don’t express how you’re feeling. But don’t worry, this extra emotion doesn’t have to be a bad thing. You’ll have an easier time tuning into your emotional needs, giving you a better understanding of what you need in life to feel satisfied.
New Moon in Cancer
In the early summer when the Moon and Sun are both in the sign of Cancer, we have a New Moon in Cancer. This is a very special time because New Moons are all about new growth and the beginning of new cycles. Cancer likes to protect itself by holding things in, so during the Cancer New Moon, we want to think about planting the metaphorical seeds we’ve kept hidden. However, this doesn’t mean we need to announce our plans to everyone if we don’t want to. It just means we need to finally bring those seeds out of hiding and sow them with intention.
Full Moon in Cancer
Six months later, at the beginning of winter when the sun is in the sign of Capricorn, we have a Full Moon in Cancer. Capricorn is about the outer energy, and the mastery of our outer world. The Cancer Full Moon allows the energies of these two signs to counterbalance each other, and helps us bring to fruition those things that we held close during the New Moon. We’re finally able to manifest these things, and create a sense of security in bringing our feelings and desires out into the world.
If you were born with the Moon in Cancer
Your Sun sign represents the person you show to the world. Your Moon sign (or natal moon sign) is about how you feel, and Cancerians have very powerful feelings. Although, you wouldn’t know it with the thick shell they use to protect themselves! They only put up a hard exterior because they’re incredibly sensitive, and can get hurt easily.
They’re aren’t just aware of their own feelings — they’re also able to sense the feelings of those around them. Being a Water sign, they have the gift of intuition, and can easily pick up on how others are feeling or what they need. Rest assured, you can’t fool a Crab because they’ll see right through you!
Matters of the heart and home are incredibly important to those born with their Moon in Cancer. Deeply loyal, they take their relationships with others seriously, and love spending time with family and friends. Natural nurturers, they often go out of their way to make others feel loved. It’s no surprise that Cancer has a reputation for being the “mother sign” of the zodiac.
The Witches Digest Continues With “The Witches Guide to Thursdays”
First off before we get the ball rolling……
I would like to apologize for us not being on the internet Tuesday and Wednesday. We had some severe storms move through the area and the power was out. It was off the biggest part of the day Tuesday. Then when it came back on Wednesday, there was non-stop rolling brown outs. To avoid risk of damaging the computers, we decided not to even turn them on. The rolling brown outs (what the country folk around here call a black out) have been known to take out TVs, computers and various other electrical items. I can guarantee you when something is damaged due because of their brown outs, they won’t take blame and they sure won’t pay to either repair it or replace it. We decided, due to our current financial situation, not to take the chance with our computers.
I am sorry for any inconvenience and with that, let’s get this show rolling…..
Luv & Hugs,
Lady A
October 2017 Energy Update – Lee Harris
Your Weekly Karmic Forecast: October 8 – 14, 2017
The Karmic Tools Weekly Forecast covers the current planetary transits which affect people in different ways and to various degrees of intensity. Take notice when it is a Personal planet (Sun / Moon / Mercury / Venus / Mars) interacting with a Social (Jupiter/Saturn) or Collective planet (Uranus / Neptune/Pluto). And pay extremely close attention when it is a Social planet interacting with a Collective planet because that means something *big* is brewing that will move large groups of people along their evolutionary paths. Tuning in to the energy and rhythm of the planets can serve as a useful *guide* as you move along your Individual Path. It also helps to understand your place within the context of the larger Social & Collective Story. Below, you will find out how these energies tend to manifest, as well as guidance and direction.
*NOTE* There are some days when there are NO CONTACTS (besides the Moon), please note that there are no missing entries, we just list the actual Activations of each week + the day they happen.
Weekly Forecast: October 8 – 14, 2017
10/8 ~ Venus (values) ~square~ Saturn (foundation):
This energy can make you feel cool & detached with loved ones. It is time to ‘take stock’ of your relationships and really evaluate the level of balance between giving & receiving. Business or personal – relationships must have a balance of give & take. You may feel more aware of your true independence in life and start reevaluating the need for certain relationships in your life. This energy pushes you to dig for your own fortitude & determination to live according to your own values & priorities and corrections or adjustments may be necessary and fairly obvious at this time. You may feel lonely, depressed or disconnected but it’s just the Universe forcing you to question or assess your current relationships, how you interact with others and how you allow them to interact with you. It’s good to periodically evaluate even the strongest relationship and check the foundation. Don’t give in to (ego-based) fears, focusing on the lack & limitation or what is not working, but instead, build on your strengths and honor the goodness you’ve created together, as well as in your Self. This is the best time to be alone and reflective because the insights you acquire through this process will help you in the future.
10/8 ~ Mercury (communication & self-expression) ~conjunct~ Sun (core essential Self):
This energy will compel you to express yourself on many levels. Communication will be a focus, just make sure it is reciprocated. You will have access to some powerful energy that can (and probably will) make quite an impression on others (if you need to). This is a good time to travel if possible too. However, if not physically, then mentally and certainly within your own area, you will take in more information per square inch than usual. Pay attention! You may even gain the much-deserved recognition from others that you have worked so hard for.
10/9 ~ Mercury (ideas, thoughts & concepts) ~square~ Pluto (rebirth & transformation):
This energy is a tough, yet powerful one. Its Highest expression would be to focus on your inner deep-dig, discovery & development. It enables you to look beneath the surface to some core drives and gain some valuable insights and thus, choose a plan of action based on your findings. You will want to know all the hidden meanings behind decisions you’ve made or want to make soon. Dig – you will find more than you think you’re ready for, but apparently, the Universe thinks differently! Pay attention and try not to worry about what anyone else thinks or believes. This energy’s flip-side is to make you obsess over one particular idea and try to force others to your way of thinking. That is a bottomless pit – you cannot truly change the way other people think – you can only change the way you think and hope it enlightens others along the way … and it will, for those who are tuned in to your level. Try to only focus on you and your direction.
10/9 ~ Sun (illumination) ~square~ Pluto (transformation):
This is a challenge to grow out of your comfort zone and into new territory. That said, with Pluto in Capricorn (2008-2024), twice a year for these 16-years, when the Sun is in Aries (Spring) and Libra (Fall), we get an opportunity to grow & change in fundamental departments of life: self vs other and home vs work. In this case, and during these years, we are literally changing how we do ALL of this. Each year builds on the previous and we are now 8-years into the 16-year process of transformation – that is the MidPoint, an incredibly potent point in time & space. It is here that you have the most information to consciously work with as you prepare for the next 8-years, and ultimately, what you would like to get out of your conscious efforts and dedication. Sun helps us clarify and when working with Pluto, it is usually what is NOT working, what has run its course and is ready to be composted into new Life, new growth and a new direction (for Self). Pluto is the Purifier, distilling things back to their true and original essence, fight that and it can be painful, work with it consciously and it can be transformative and will heal at the deepest root of any challenge. You can use this activation to honor that which has become obvious or is highlighted in the here & now and purge or purify this energy. You are deeply supported for releasing old patterns and setting new conscious practices into action. Tie up loose ends, close multiple chapters, mourn & move on. As you do that, you will feel lighter & brighter and more grounded in your true Self, your evolved Self.
10/11 ~ Mars (anger) ~square~ Saturn (restriction):
This is the energy of action being restricted and the anger or frustration that follows. You can either be angry and feel restricted, limited and unable to move … or you can see this energy as an opportunity to define the right actions to take and strategically plan to take them when the Universe is more supportive. This energy requires us to slow down and double check The Plan. If you proceed consciously, your plan has a better chance of success than if you were reckless & impatient. You may experience a blockage of some sort, internal or external. You may feel this tremendous urge to change or move forward in your life but seem to find blockages and limitations with every effort. That is likely your perception, do you feel inadequate to the task at hand? What are you afraid of? Fear is False Evidence Appearing Real – release fear and choose to be responsible for creating your life. If you don’t, your outer circumstance only becomes a reflection of your inner belief. You will attract criticism and repel support. Take your grand vision and figure out three small steps you can take on this restricted level that is still taking you in the direction of your goal. Don’t try to initiate at this time, this is a time for cultivating, planning, working behind the scenes, doing the detail work and foundational (grunt work) that is NECESSARY to support the grand vision when the time comes to fully express it.
10/12 ~ Mercury (communication) ~sextile~ Saturn (responsibility):
This energy is really good for being able to objectively see what needs to be changed, fixed or stabilized in your life or environment. One expression of this energy is a tendency toward depression or apathy, but a better expression would be facing what needs to be done and following through on what you have begun. You may feel the need to organize things at home or work, or perhaps take a class or workshop of some sort that will help you attain your current goals. Either way, be focused but not too serious – balance in all things. It’s when you focus on the lack and limitation that you feel overwhelmed and sometimes helpless. That’s not the point of this energy. It’s just time to do some serious thinking, tend to the details, take stock and make changes accordingly.
Your Love Horoscopes for the Week of October 9th
Sarah Bartlett, Astrologer
From The Astrology Room
This week, Jupiter moves into passionate Scorpio to influence the deeper trenches of our love life.
In fact as the planet of enlightenment now begins its journey through Scorpio over the next year, sparks may fly, electricity and sexual desire will be generated, but we will all begin to experience the dark and light side of our feelings too. We will also know which feelings are right and which are wrong. Welcome the transformation and dig deep for your own truth too.
ARIES
This week, you will begin to be noticed by someone special or someone is going to see you in a new light. From the heady heights of being in the spotlight, you will also begin to realize how to make compromises, and ones which will work in your favour and for your long-term benefit.
TAURUS
What all Taureans are experiencing at the moment is a sense of feeling lost, or of having to reluctantly let go of this or that. But when something is lost, something is also usually found, and this week you begin to see exactly what that is and reclaim it for yourself.
GEMINI
Full of joie de vivre, you’re chatting to everyone and loving yourself. It’s hard keeping up appearances and looking good too, isn’t it? But you can begin to see your love life for what it is. And that means take the right steps to be true to your values and accept your need to be centre-stage.
CANCER
You’ve been a little slow in getting to grips with a love issue and you realise that denial is taking you nowhere fast. In fact, the more you ignore the voice of conscience, the more you are getting into tricky waters. Time to take a deep breath and say what’s on your mind. Then you can get on with living an interesting life again.
LEO
It’s timely to reflect about love and life and ask yourself where you’re going next. These precious moments will lead you to the pot of gold which brings you the love you deserve. It’s timely to see that your mission in life is to live it to the full, and to experience a new love affair as a magical mystery.
VIRGO
This time last year you were confused about a relationship. It may even have been clandestine, unexpected or not like you had wanted it to be. Yet now you’re beginning to put the past behind you. There will be regrets and maybe a sense of loss, but what you know now, is how to love from your heart and soul.
LIBRA
You’re beginning to be in control of your love life. In fact, if single, if you’d like someone to to be right up close beside you, then all you have to do is ask. Or maybe, take a chance on going some place with your current partner? It will take you out of yourself, and into a love which will permeate all you do.
SCORPIO
You may already have built defensive walls around to stop you from getting hurt. Or, you may have just found a billion duties to keep you occupied. But either way, with Jupiter moving into your own sign, feelings take over a little but will bring you the love that you deserve. Let it all develop and be rewarded.
SAGITTARIUS
This week you have itchy feet, and you just long to get out of the house and on with a new romantic adventure. In fact, there will be more than just one outing, as you also set off to discover if your relationships are as reliable as you thought them to be. With enlightenment comes a new perspective.
CAPRICORN
Romance is a little fragile this week, and you really can’t see any way to make it more solid. But at least you can plot, plan and see how to adapt or take a more laid back approach. Just take care, what you see isn’t always what you get, and what you hear isn’t always the truth.
AQUARIUS
A new-found wisdom about other means you can be realistic rather than idealistic. The reality is, that the things that drive us wild about someone when we first meet are usually what drives us up the wall a few years down the road. This week, you learn to balance ideals with reality and focus on how to make your love life work.
PISCES
Make the most of this week’s energy to prove that what you have to offer is the true, loyal, and loving you. Tell someone your deepest thoughts. Express and share your warm and nurturing heart, and never give up on that need to belong to something, whether to a family, a lover or just to your own self.
*NEW* For the Singles Witches Amongst Us, Your Daring Dating Horoscopes for the Week of October 9th
David Wells, Astrologer
From The Astrology Room
ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)
You may still be buzzing from last week’s full Moon in your sign, still full of energy that can be used to move on from a relationship block and seizing the day rather than harking back to your yesterdays. Good. Mercury and the Sun offer choice chat up lines. Use them.
TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)
As Jupiter moves into your relationship sky, Tuesday, he starts a one year tenure as your go-to guy for all things relationship. As chance would have it, Venus and Mars are holding hands in your new love sky. A combo deal that says fate has this, step aside. New love incoming.
GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)
Nobody cares much what you had for breakfast, but put it on your social media anyway, something to do isn’t it. Or you could get out of the house, lift your head from your phone and remember your heaven given gifts for flirting and communication.
CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)
I have nothing against choice, it’s a good thing, but sometimes when there’s so much choice nothing gets done. Jupiter is opening a love pic and mix, he wants you to see the choices, but also wants you to pick only the one that holds the greatest adventure. No rush.
LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)
You don’t need someone to be a carbon copy of you, far from it, but some shared interests are good; right? Yes, but the challenge this week goes beyond a love of sports or all things leopard print. Moral code. Make no compromises, if there’s a doubt, you are out.
VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)
The combo of Venus and Mars in your sign is what you might call amazing, if you were drawn to such sensationalist expression? If you’re not feeling so exuberant maybe we could agree it’s an interesting and encouraging thing for love? Go mad, lose the duffle-coat; get hot and bothered without it.
LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)
Not one to pass up the chance for some adoration it seems you’re more than happy to get involved with some chit-chat with an ex, or maybe it’s a friend of a friend? Good for you, just make sure you know what you want from that chit-chat going in.
SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)
Jupiter is in your sign from Tuesday, for a year, he’s the planet of good luck and all that but he’s got nothing much to do with your love life, for now anyway. But. As other planets move around him look for second time around, ships that passed in the night finally get alongside.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)
If you can’t see someone who fancies you like I fancy cake for breakfast, you might want to take a mate along just to act as observer on your next night out. Someone is being as clear as they can be without throwing themselves at your feet; take another look.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)
If you can get some time away this week, it may pay you to do some travelling, to re-asses what you want from love and to change your view, literally. Love waits overseas, but also in libraries and travel agents, anywhere your mind is broadened and your heart feels more at home.
AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)
What’s not so great about this week, for your love life, is an increase in how much time you’re investing at work. But, you can still balance it all with some romance if you pay attention to very well hidden signals from a would be love interest. Why hide? They don’t even know how into you they are. Yet.
PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)
Sitting opposite you are Venus and Mars, they’re also out reach of your resident fog-maker Neptune, affording them some clarity. New love is waiting to be discovered, or rather waiting to discover you? Finally, someone sees that look in your eye. Hello sailor.
Your Daily Horoscopes for Monday, October 9th
Claire Petulengro, Astrologer
From The Astrology Room
ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)
Your life over the last twelve months did not turn out as you thought it would, but it has helped you to learn many lessons about yourself. This is about to pay dividends in your personal life. Both today and tomorrow prove this.
TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)
You have fallen before and you have got up again, that I see. Doing so this month seems harder than before, but if you do so it will make you stronger. Younger faces prove the cause of much inspiration.
GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)
Your element of air brings out your gossipy side. You find it important to discuss others’ lives. Could it be that this is helping you to avoid focusing on your own? Love discussions go better than you’d dreamed.
CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)
The pressure is on in your career and you may feel the need to tell some white lies in order to make yourself look more professional than you feel you are. Be true to yourself and don’t make up facts. It’s the real you who will draw the most supporters.
LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)
Don’t make promises to family which you know you may not be able to keep. Those you will be dealing with will be relying on you far more heavily than you thought.
VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)
I can see you are finding it hard to tell the difference between fact and fiction but I also see that you have allowed yourself to be blinded by the sex appeal of a certain person. Step away and take a breath for clarity.
LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)
I know you have been confused and your feelings have been hard to work out, but give yourself more time. What I see that you don’t is that time is on your side. Wear what you know you look good in tonight.
SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)
If you wait any longer for all of the changes you want you’re only going to get older! Time is of the essence in changes. You see today what needs to be done to get what and who you want. Do it!
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)
Mistakes are the portals of discovery Sagittarius. There is plenty you need to get done today, but instead do what feels right inside. It’s the key to you finding where your future should lead.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)
If you have nothing nice to say about those around you today then say nothing at all. Your element of earth brings out your need for security, but allow other people time to catch up with your ideas.
AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)
You let go of what was not working and instead focus on what and who makes you feel good about your life. Media links in your work are to be enjoyed, not dreaded. Cancelled plans make way for better ways to spend your time.
PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)
If you love life, then life will love you back. Family have been hard to please but all they want to do is talk, so lend them your ear. News of pregnancies and babies is set to bring surprise.
If You Were Born Today, October 9
You are a study in contradictions. Although compassionate, humanitarian, and egalitarian at least in theory, you can also be domineering when the mood strikes you. Your moods and behavior swings can be frustrating for others (and for yourself!) at times, but they also help fuel your powerful creativity. You love to debate and you have a way with words. You are not tolerant of narrow-minded thinking. You possess considerable strength of character, and partnership is extremely important to you. You live by your own truth and you are responsible.
Famous people born today: John Lennon, Sean Lennon, John Entwistle.
Your Daily Horoscopes for Tuesday, October 10th
Claire Petulengro, Astrologer
From The Astrology Room
ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)
The secret of getting ahead is getting started Aries. These were the words of Mark Twain and they apply to your sign more than most today. You seem to have reached a feeling of existence rather than progress. Change that now.
TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)
You’re worried what the end result of a project will be. Try not to focus on the end, but on the stage you are at now. It’s the key to success. An ex is on your mind for all the wrong reasons. Careful!
.
GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)
You’ve been trying so hard to put up a protective front and to pretend you don’t care. Underneath it all you and I know you do! Time spent getting your head to talk to your heart is like gold dust. Use it!
CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)
The pressure is on for you to do what others think is right, but that may not sit well with you. Your ruling planet the Moon helps you to find your voice today. Although, know how far is too far to go my friend.
LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)
Your famous Leo pride is standing in the way of you doing what you know deep down inside is the ‘right thing.’ You can change the world and you will if you take action and follow the path of your dreams.
VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)
Try to show a little more consideration to close ones who you know have been going through a lot in recent days and weeks. You’ve been trying to act normal to make them feel normal. Heart to hearts tonight are the remedy they need.
LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)
The younger generation are on your mind more than normal. It would be worth remembering with today’s very stubborn line up, that you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves.
SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)
You seem to have backed yourself into a corner with something you’ve said or done. Whatever you do, don’t tell more lies, or act more stubbornly just to try and convince them you are right. A simple apology works wonders today.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)
Your house of work is highlighted and many of your sign will be questioning if you’re in the right career and which path is the right one for you. Don’t rule out going back into the learning stream. It could be the key to your success.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)
For once I am encouraging you to bring out your more stubborn side. Certain influences in your life think they can talk you into what you know you don’t want. Remember what happened in January? Stand by your dreams.
AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)
Can you feel the tension in your chart? I can and I know if you give in to the help and support that’s being offered, that it will subside. Plan something you know you enjoy. Letting go of guilt can prove someone has manipulated you.
PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)
New faces enter your life and stir your imagination. You begin to think outside the box and you also realise that with certain friends or even lovers you were ‘making do.’ That is no longer the case from here on in.
Tarot Card of the Day
Queen of Coins
Traditionally, representing the energy of a Queen, this feminine guardian is endowed with enormous good sense and problem solving energy, but she is not particularly entrepreneurial. She loves to advise, encourage, and empower those she gets involved with, studying their problems with them and setting them up to solve them. Traditionally, she was pictured as the Sibyl or Oracle, perhaps a Tarot reader, who made herself available to people in need, no matter what their social class or situation. In modern times, she will be found educating, healing, managing disaster aid programs or a charitable drive of some sort.
In every case, she does not see the benefits that exist in her life as belonging solely to her. She feels the needs of her people and will spend freely of her time, energy, skills, money to see that nobody is left out. For this, and because she likes to work in an atmosphere of beauty, enjoyment and abundance, she is sometimes accused of being extravagant. But she works hard, and she sees no reason to deny herself the rewards of a job well done. Everyone who comes in contact with her feels enriched by her enjoyment in living.
This Week’s Tarot Card Reading
A one-card reading gives you a glimpse at what’s coming
For the week of October 9, I chose the Ten of Pentacles reversed!
Last week’s card, the Ten of Cups reversed, showed a need to re-evaluate your personal values and what truly makes you happy when it comes to family and your loved ones. This week, the Ten of Pentacles reversed takes that work further and asks you to look at the role in which money plays in your family life.
Are you placing too much value on money as a family? Are you working too much to save money, when really, if you simplified your lifestyle and reduced your living costs, you may not need to work so much and could enjoy your life more? Or perhaps money is slipping through your fingers and your living costs are far exceeding your income. It’s time to check in on your family’s money situation and look at how you can bring greater balance.
Ask the Tarot: “What role does money play in my family’s life right now?”
Start a Daily Tarot Ritual
Learn what a daily Tarot reading ritual can do for you!
The things you do every day are the things that can impact your life the most. Through our daily rituals and routines, we create a sense of consistency and mindfulness that helps keep us centered when negative emotions, sudden developments, and surprise circumstances come up that could knock us off kilter. Yoga, meditation, prayer, cooking, exercise … these are all great rituals that, when done daily, can create a real sense of health, stability, and purpose for you. But perhaps one of the most beneficial daily rituals of all is a daily Tarot reading!
Any Tarot reading can provide an incredible amount of insight and understanding into whatever situation you’re facing. But daily Tarot readings go even further — by identifying the cards and messages that come up for you on a regular basis, start to realize the patterns in your life, the things that affect you most frequently, and all the ways you tend to react. When you can identify these patterns, you have all the power to embrace them or change them!
5 Reasons to start a daily Tarot reading ritual
1. Set intentions
We’ve all had those days when we wake up late, throw ourselves together, and stumble into our routine unprepared and unfocused. The problem is, those days usually don’t smooth out. The way you start your day — are you eager or are you exhausted? Optimistic or pessimistic? Open or closed off? — can totally dictate the day you have. You cannot control everything that will come up, but you can control the way you move through it. Pausing to set intentions for the day through a daily Tarot reading grounds your heart and mind so you enter every situation that arises with clarity and mindfulness.
2. See the patterns
It’s easy to compartmentalize our days, taking everything that happens from morning to night and tucking it away, in order to start fresh the next day. But when we look at each day as isolated from all the rest, we limit our ability to see the big picture of what’s happening in our lives. One little regret here, one little reward there may not seem like much. But when you start to realize a pattern of regret or a pattern of reward, you can start to see the reason these things recur, which gives you all the power to create more reward and less regret in the future.
3. Be present
Living in the moment is NOT easy. Fears, problems, and heartaches from the past — whether years ago or just days ago — are hard to ignore. Not to mention hopes and expectations for the future… But when you spend all your time in the past and the future, you miss everything that’s happening in the present moment. A daily Tarot reading ritual establishes a time to reconnect with yourself every day, in this exact moment, and identify the things that are affecting you most NOW.
4. Make difficult decisions
When you draw the cards for your Tarot reading, be intentional and tune into your intuition. It is your subconscious that knows which cards to pull, because it knows which messages you need to be hear. Sometimes our conscious minds are so full of trivial matters that we cannot see what we really need to see, making it tough to make any healthy decisions for ourselves. A daily Tarot reading helps you clear out the clutter of your daily life so you see what lies before you with greater clarity.
5. Find peace
Whether you’re experiencing a specific, heartfelt loss or change or you’re just feeling totally crazed out of your mind, a daily Tarot reading helps you not just with a one-time piece of advice, but with regular, recurring help through your process of healing. By meditating on the wisdom you receive from a reading, you’ll not only find clarity in your present situation, but a deeper sense of peace and calm in your daily life. And when the next issue arises — because you know it will! — you’ll be able to face it head-on using your greatest weapon: a healthy, centered mindset.
Three readings a day keeps the stress away
Many people read their horoscope or do a Tarot reading first thing in the morning, to set the tone for the day. But have you ever had a day that started out one way, then took a serious turn? Of course you have … we all have! That’s why not just one, but THREE Tarot readings a day can be so beneficial. You can not only set intentions for your day, but as circumstances arise throughout the day, you can check back in with another reading for more immediate, focused insight.
Shove off, Mates!
We headed for the Island of Runes & Other Daily Divination!
Good Morning To All The WOTC’s Family & Friends! It is Monday, October 9th, Columbus Day! Enjoy!
Columbus Day in the United States
Columbus Day, which is on the second Monday of October, remembers Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492. This holiday is controversial because the European settlement in the Americas led to the demise of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples.
Observe Columbus Day
Some Americans celebrate the anniversary of the discovery of their country with church services and other activities. In some towns and cities, special church services, parades and large events are held. Many celebrations happen in the Italian-American community. The celebrations in New York and San Francisco are particularly noteworthy. In Hawaii Columbus Day is celebrated as Discoverers’ Day, but it is not a state holiday.
Many states now celebrate Native Americans’ Day/Indigenous People’s Day instead of Columbus Day.
What’s Open or Closed?
Columbus day is a public holiday in many parts of the United states, but is not a day off in some states. Some government offices are closed because Columbus Day is still a federal government holiday. The day is a legal observance in states like Florida.
Many businesses and shops are open in states that don’t have Columbus Day as a public holiday. Schools are not required to close but check with your school district or school calendar on Columbus Day school holiday closures. The same goes for post offices – check with your local post office.
About Columbus Day
Christopher Columbus is often portrayed as the first European to sail to the Americas. He is sometimes portrayed as the discoverer of the New World. However, this is controversial on many counts. There is evidence that the first Europeans to sail across the Atlantic were Viking explorers from Scandinavia. In addition, the land was already populated by indigenous peoples, who had ‘discovered’ the Americas thousands of years before.
Columbus Day originated as a celebration of Italian-American heritage and was first held in San Francisco in 1869. The first state-wide celebration was held in Colorado in 1907. In 1937, Columbus Day become a holiday across the United States. Since 1971, it has been celebrated on the second Monday in October. The date on which Columbus arrived in the Americas is also celebrated as the DÃa de la Raza (Day of the Race) in Latin America and some Latino communities in the USA. However, it is a controversial holiday in some countries and has been re-named in others.
Columbus Day celebrations are controversial because the settlement of Europeans in the Americas led to the deaths of a very large proportion of the native people. It has been argued that this was a direct result of Columbus’ actions. It is clear that the arrival of the European settlers led to the demise of a large proportion of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. It has also been argued that Columbus should not be honored for discovering North America, as he only went as far as some islands in the Caribbean and never got as far as mainland America.
Moon in Gemini
The Moon is traveling through witty Gemini today. Call, text, send email, write letters. Visit someone you’ve missed. Watch a movie and talk about it at a coffee shop. Get out and about. Don’t sleep in.
Our instincts are to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Sky This Week for October 9 to 15
Monday, October 9
Venus crosses the invisible border separating the constellations Leo the Lion and Virgo the Maiden today. The border crossing sets up a series of nice conjunctions between the bright planet and Virgo’s stars in the coming weeks.The Moon reaches perigee, the closest point in its orbit around Earth, at 1:55 a.m. EDT. It then lies 227,953 miles (366,855 kilometers) from Earth’s center.
Tuesday, October 10
Although autumn began a few weeks ago and the stars of winter’s Orion now rule the morning sky, the Summer Triangle remains prominent on October evenings. Look high in the west after darkness falls and your eyes will fall on the brilliant star Vega in the constellation Lyra the Harp. At magnitude 0.0, Vega is the brightest member of the Triangle. The second-brightest star, magnitude 0.8 Altair in Aquila the Eagle, lies some 35° southeast of Vega. The asterism’s dimmest member, magnitude 1.3 Deneb in Cygnus the Swan, stands about 25° east-northeast of Vega. For observers at midnorthern latitudes, Deneb passes through the zenith between 8 and 9 p.m. local daylight time, about an hour after the last vestiges of twilight disappear.
Wednesday, October 11
Uranus reaches opposition in just nine days, and it is already a tempting evening target. The ice giant world rises during twilight and climbs 30° above the eastern horizon by 9:30 p.m. local daylight time. The magnitude 5.7 planet lies in Pisces, 1.5° west-northwest of magnitude 4.3 Omicron (o) Piscium. Although Uranus glows brightly enough to see with the naked eye under a dark sky, binoculars make the task much easier. A telescope reveals the planet’s blue-green disk, which spans 3.7″.
Thursday, October 12
Last Quarter Moon occurs at 8:25 a.m. EDT. It rose around 11:30 p.m. local daylight time yesterday evening, which gives North American observers a chance to see it almost precisely half-lit before this morning’s dawn. Earth’s only natural satellite appears among the background stars of southern Gemini.
Mars is hot on the trail of Venus, and crosses the border between Leo and Virgo today. Mars also will have some nice conjunctions with the Maiden’s stars, but they’ll occur at a slower pace thanks to the Red Planet’s more sluggish orbit.
Venus appears 0.8° northeast of the 4th-magnitude star Beta (b) Virginis this morning.
Friday, October 13
The annual Orionid meteor shower is quickly ramping up toward its peak the morning of October 21. You already should be seeing a few shower members in the predawn sky, where the waning crescent Moon doesn’t offer much interference. To tell an Orionid from a sporadic meteor, trace the path of the “shooting star” backward. An Orionid meteor will appear to radiate from the northern part of the constellation Orion the Hunter.
Saturday, October 14
Saturn remains a tempting target in this week’s evening sky. The ringed planet stands nearly 20° above the southwestern horizon as darkness falls. Shining at magnitude 0.5, it appears significantly brighter than any of the background stars in its host constellation, Ophiuchus the Serpent-bearer. Of course, the best views of Saturn come through a telescope, which reveals a 16″-diameter globe surrounded by a spectacular ring system that spans 37″. But more significantly, the rings tilt 27.0° to our line of sight — the maximum angle possible — in mid-October. The rings haven’t appeared this open since 2003 and they won’t approach this tilt again until 2032. The steep angle offers superb views of ring structure.
Sunday, October 15
The variable star Algol in Perseus reaches minimum brightness at 1:25 a.m. EDT tomorrow morning. Observers on the East Coast who start watching around midevening can see the star’s brightness diminish by 70 percent over the course of about five hours. Those in western North America will see Algol brighten noticeably from late evening until dawn starts to light up the sky, when the star stands high in the west. This eclipsing binary system runs through a cycle from minimum (magnitude 3.4) to maximum (magnitude 2.1) and back every 2.87 days.
Tuesday 10th October:
Glorious Gothic – Jupiter enters Scorpio
Jupiter expands. Mostly, this is good news – optimism, abundance, and the desire to learn and explore are all Jupiter’s general concern.
In astrology, bountiful Jupiter rules travel and foreigners, religion, sport, the law, publishing, studying, gambling, and feeling good. The whole thing about luck and good fortune that’s associated with the transits of Jupiter is born from its generous, upbeat energy. If you’re open-minded and positive, you’ll likely attract helpful people or recognise lucky opportunities when they come along. Certainly, while Jupiter aspects can be very beneficial, they cannot bring anything more than a cheerful (or greedy) mood if we don’t choose to work with what’s on offer.
Here in secretive, watery Scorpio until November 2018, Jupiter expands and explores what’s hidden away in the locked rooms of Scorpio’s house. One of the areas in focus is ‘other people’s money’ – including legacies, insurance pay-outs, investments and initiatives such as crowd-funding. This can be a favourable time to improve personal finances, or get the financial support you need for a project. Many financial events and trends will relate to Jupiter’s realms in some way – sport, religion, law, travel, gambling, and so on.
Scorpio also presides over sex and death – so real intimacy and deep emotions of both joy and sorrow are emphasised during the next twelve months. Our ideas and philosophies around sex, death, and money will be open for much-needed discussion.
If Jupiter in Scorpio’s journey touches our natal horoscope we may get a bit obsessive or intense about sex, death, and other people’s money. Jupiter can trigger the urge to over-do, waste energy, and tends to only see the vastly bigger picture. Is the devil in the details? Probably, the answer is yes.
Out in the world there could be more scrutiny of the sex trade, particularly secretive people-smuggling operations and hidden horrors. Sex tourism will also be highlighted in the news, and perhaps the thorny issue of the mass tourism industry in general.
Secretive financial affairs may come to light when Jupiter connects with Pluto in money-orientated Capricorn during 2018.
Jupiter in Scorpio also favours exploring and studying the paranormal, mysterious hidden histories, and all things witchy and woo-woo. This bewitching theme should really take off when Jupiter links with Neptune in Pisces in November and December – and onwards into 2018. And by the way, Jupiter in Scorpio has not made this flowing aspect with Neptune in Pisces since the 19th century. It’s special.
Jupiter in Scorpio is not for the faint-hearted, the commitment-phobic, or the lazy.
But it invites us to experience new emotional depths in our relationships, following on from Jupiter in Libra’s rather cooler, and simpler, desire for partnerships.
Jupiter was last in Scorpio between October 25th, 2005 and 24th November, 2006. Maybe this was a meaningful time for you? If so, dig into your archives and you’ll discover some themes that are likely to resonate once more in your life during the months ahead.
Ahoy Mates!
Since we are running late and there is a lot of Divination to cover on Mondays,
We will now be sailing onto your Daily Horoscopes, Runes, Tarot and of course, much more.
While you are waiting on us…..
When we run across a bit of information that we figure might be useful to you, we like to pass it on. This morning on the News, I was listening to it and something caught my attention. With all the security breeches, hax attacks and the latest Equifax disaster, we are all concerned with security. The local News channel has a PC Tech guy who I occasionally listen to and today, he was talked about just this problem. He gave a site(which I have already been there) which you can use to see if any of your email address have been stolen or sold on the dark net. All you have to do, is simply type in your email address and it will tell you if your address has compromised. I did two of our old ones we had closed out a long time ago on Yahoo and guess what? They showed up they had been compromised and also showed me where the breech came from. I am glad I cleared those out. The thieves didn’t get anything just wasted their time. Our other active accounts were fine. But if you are concerned about your on-line security, check out this site. You might be surprised what you uncover.
Lady Abyss
Work, Work, Work, It Never Stops…….
Even if you burn the midnight oil around here, you never get caught up! I am trying to get back to some sort of routine. I went out in the warehouse and found a whole new supply of stuff. I will be here till eternity. I know it piled up rather quickly. Oh, well, I will get what I can get done and leave the rest for the crew when they come back on Monday. I was dreading Monday, now I am praying for it to hurry up and get here after I saw all these boxes. But speaking of boxes, I am over at the store today adding lots of new merchandise. Got a moment, stop by and check it out. New books of shadows, new oils, new soaps, new spell kits and the list goes on and on. Also the jewelry company in California, the deal when through and I will be adding some of their merchandise today also.
Now off on other things, I am sure you all know Lady Beltane. She is the one who runs Coven Life. Well, she just happens to be in the hospital and didn’t bother telling me because she didn’t want to worry me anymore than I was already. I got an email from her this morning, she is suppose to be out of the hospital Monday. So please light and candle and say a prayer for her speedy recovery. Also that she may have a healthy Winter. She gets sick this early, oh, it don’t look good for Winter. So please say a prayer for her and that she will have good health this coming Winter. She is a sweet lady and I hate to see her sick. I just wish she had told me sooner.
Next, I know this is a long shot but I am going to give it a try anyway. I have been doing a search on Linked-In, Google and every place else for a customer who placed an order on Magickal Necessities. His name is Joey N………… I am trying to contact him in regards to a wrong email address we received for him. I am hoping that he is either a member here or stops by to see what is going on. I know it is a long shot but Joey if you read this, could you please contact me at witches_of_the_craft@outlook.com, it is rather important. Thank you!
Now, I believe that pretty well covers the day for me but I can’t leave without telling you a funny story first…
Yesterday, I was in a hurry to get the daily postings done so I could take the boys fishing. I don’t let them go by themselves because these are farm ponds around here and they are deep in the middle. So we got all our stuff ready and off we went. We haven’t had any rain around here in weeks so the pond’s bottom near the edge is starting to show. We had been going down to the part that had dried, sit and fished there. Well, we got all our stuff out, throw our lines out and sit for about 15 minutes, no bites, That’s unusual because you generally throw your line in and a fish is waiting on it. We got bored, started to move around the pond. Jacob caught a fish, he was thrilled to death. They love to catch them but hate to take them off the line. They generally dangle the fish in front of my face so I can take them off the line. Ha, I told him yesterday it was time he learned how to take them off the line. After a few faces he made, he got the fish off the line. Then when he went to throw it back, he accidentally threw it in the mud. Well, I am not going to watch a fish lay and die in the mud. So I told him to leave it alone I would get it. And boy did I, we have an old superstition if a fish shews water out at you, he has jinxed the rest of your fishing trip. Well, this little bast*&%!, shewed at me. after I was nice enough to go dig him out of the mud, he shewed. I ended up sinking in mud up to my knees. The boys were having a fit, I was going to drown, I was going to drown. Which was really funny because dry land was about 5 inches away from me. Anyway, while one of them when to get the farmers, the other stayed telling me not to move, I was going to drown. We always take the dog with us and I hollered at Kade (the dog) to bring Momma her stick. I always take my staff with us because I use it to climb the hills and occasionally knock a snake in the head. Anyway, Kade knew what I meant. He walks over to the stick and starts rolling it down the hill to me. He got it to point so I could reach it and I put it on solid ground and pulled myself out of the mud. Damn, that mud stunk! By that time, here comes Jacob and the farmers just flying on four wheelers. I could hear Jacob holler, she is drowning, hurry. I couldn’t help but laugh my butt off. We were sitting on top of the hill and I looked like a mud puppy and we were both laughing by this time. All of them were totally confused and couldn’t figure out how on earth I got saved. Until they found out my little 8 pound Pomeranian had saved the day. Long story short, I won’t never call Kade a dumb butt again!
Now I am off to the store, got a minute stop by and see what’s new and oh, yeah, don’t go fishing at any muddy ponds, please!
Till tomorrow, my luvs,
Lady A
I is a good puppy. I saved my Mommie! Ain’t he cute, meanest little poot, you ever seen in your life.
Friday is the day of Venus. It takes it name from Frigg, the Goddess of love and transformation. She rules the spiritual side of a person that manifests in the physical. Because of this, Friday is often thought of as dangerously unpredictable. This is expressed in an old East Anglian adage:
On Friday, October 6th, We Honor the Goddess Morrighan
Morrighan
Goddess of War and Sovereignty
In Celtic mythology, the Morrighan is known as a goddess of battle and war. However, there’s a bit more to her than this. Also referred to as Morrígu, Morríghan, or Mor-Ríoghain, she is called the “washer at the ford,” because if a warrior saw her washing his armor in the stream, it meant he was to die that day. She is the goddess who determines whether or not you walk off the field of battle, or are carried off upon your shield.
In later Irish folklore, this role would be delegated to the bain sidhe, who foresaw the death of members of a specific family or clan.
She appears to date from around the Copper Age, based on archaeological findings. Stone stelae have been discovered in the British Isles, France, and Portugal, that are from approximately 3000 b.c.e.
The Morrighan often appears in the form of a crow or raven, or is seen accompanied by a group of them. In the stories of the Ulster cycle, she is shown as a cow and a wolf as well. The connection with these two animals suggest that in some areas, she may have been connected to fertility and land.
In some legends, the Morrighan is considered a triune, or triple goddess, but there are a lot of inconsistencies to this. She often appears as a sister to the Badb and Macha. In some Neopagan traditions, she is portrayed in her role as destroyer, representing the Crone aspect of the Maiden/Mother/Crone cycle, but this seems to be incorrect when one looks at her original Irish history.
Some scholars point out that war specifically is not a primary aspect of the Morrighan, and that her connection to cattle presents her as a goddess of sovereignty. The theory is that she can be seen as a deity who guides or protects a king.
Mary Jones of the Celtic Literature Collective says, “Morrigan is one of the most complex figures in Irish mythology, not the least due to her genealogy.
In the earliest copies of the Lebor Gabála Érenn, there are listed three sisters, named Badb, Macha, and Anann. In the Book of Leinster version, Anann is identified with Morrigu, while in the Book of Fermoy version, Macha is identified with Morrigan… What is most evident is that from the texts, “Morrigan” or “Morrigu” is a title applied to different women who for the most part seem to be sisters or related in some manner, or sometimes it is the same woman with slightly differing names in different manuscripts and redactions. We see that Morrigan is identified with Badb Macha, Anann, and Danann. The first is usually identified with the raven and battle, the second usually identified with the archetypical Celtic horse goddess, the third with the land goddess, and the fo[u]rth with a mother goddess.”
In modern literature, there has been some linking of the Morrighan to the character of Morgan Le Fay in the Arthurian legend. It appears, though, that this is more fanciful thinking than anything else. Although Morgan le Fay appears in the Vita Merlini in the twelfth century, a narrative of the life of Merlin by Geoffrey of Monmouth, it’s unlikely that there’s a connection to the Morrighan.
Scholars point out that the name “Morgan” is Welsh, and derived from root words connected to the sea. “Morrighan” is Irish, and is rooted in words that are associated with “terror” or “greatness.” In other words, the names sound similar, but the relationship ends there.
Today, many Pagans do work with the Morrighan, although many of them describe their relationship with her as being somewhat reluctant at first. John Beckett over at Patheos describes a ritual in which the Morrighan was invoked, and says, “She wasn’t threatening but She was very clearly in command – I think She knew the respect we have for Her and that She didn’t have to convince anybody who She is. She seemed pleased that we were honoring Her and attempting to answer Her call… I want to encourage Pagans to listen for the call of Morrigan.
She’s a complex goddess. She can be blunt, rough, and violent. She is the Battle Raven and is not to be trifled with. But she has a message I believe is critical for our future as Pagans, as humans, and as creatures of the Earth. A storm is coming. Gather your tribe. Reclaim your sovereignty.”
Gods of the Celts
Wondering about some of the major deities of the ancient Celtic world? Although the Celts consisted of societies all over the British Isles and parts of Europe, some of their gods and goddesses have become a part of modern Pagan practice. Here are some of the deities honored by the ancient Celtic peoples.
Brighid, Hearth Goddess of Ireland
A daughter of the Dagda, Brighid is one of the classic triple goddesses of the Celtic pantheon. Many Pagans honor her today as a goddess of the hearth and home, and of divination and prophecy. She’s often associated with the Imbolc sabbat, as well as with fire, domesticity, and family life. Brighid was the patron of poets and bards, as well as healers and magicians. She was especially honored when it came to matters of prophecy and divination.
Cailleach, Ruler of Winter
Cailleach is known in parts of the Celtic world as the hag, the bringer of storms, the Dark Mother of the winter months. However, she features prominently in mythology and is not just a destroyer, but also a creator goddess. According to The Etymological Dictionary Of Scottish-Gaelic the word cailleach itself means “veiled one” or “old woman”. In some stories, she appears to a hero as a hideous old woman, and when he is kind to her, she turns into a lovely young woman who rewards him for his good deeds. In other stories, she turns into a giant gray boulder at the end of winter, and remains this way until Beltane, when she springs back to life.
Cernunnos, Wild God of the Forest
Cernunnos is the horned god found in many traditions of modern Paganism and Wicca. He is an archetype found predominantly in Celtic regions, and symbolizes fertility and masculine energy. Often celebrated around the Beltane sabbat, Cernunnos is associated with the forest, the greening of the earth, and wild stags. He is a god of vegetation and trees in his aspect as the Green Man, and a god of lust and fertility when connected with Pan, the Greek satyr. In some traditions, he is seen as a god of death and dying, and takes time to comfort the dead by singing to them on their way to the spirit world.
Cerridwen, Keeper of the Cauldron
Cerridwen is known in Welsh mythology as the keeper of the Cauldron of the Underworld in which knowledge and inspiration are brewed. She is considered a goddess of prophetic powers, and because her symbol is the Cauldron, she is an honored goddess in many Wiccan and Pagan traditions. The legend of Cerridwen is heavy with instances of transformation: when she is chasing Gwion, the two of them change into any number of animal and plant shapes. Following the birth of Taliesen, Cerridwen contemplates killing the infant but changes her mind; instead she throws him into the sea, where he is rescued by a Celtic prince, Elffin. Because of these stories, change and rebirth and transformation are all under the control of this powerful Celtic goddess.
The Dagda, Father God of Ireland
The Dagda was a father god of the Celtic pantheon, and plays an important role in the stories of the Irish invasions. He was the leader of the Tuatha de Danaan, and a god of fertility and knowledge. His name means “the good god.” In addition to his mighty club, the Dagda also possessed a large cauldron. The cauldron was magical in that it had an endless supply of food in it — the ladle itself was said to be so large that two men could lie in it. The Dagda is typically portrayed as a plump man with a large phallus, representative of his status as a god of abundance.
Herne, God of the Wild Hunt
In British lore, Herne the Hunter is a god of vegetation, vine, and the wild hunt. Similar in many aspects to Cernunnos, Herne is celebrated in the autumn months, when the deer go into rut. He is seen as a god of the common folk, and is typically recognized only around the Windsor Forest area of Berkshire, England. Herne was considered a divine hunter, and was seen on his wild hunts carrying a great horn and a wooden bow, riding a mighty black horse and accompanied by a pack of baying hounds. Mortals who get in the way of the Wild Hunt are swept up in it, and often taken away by Herne, destined to ride with him for eternity. He’s seen as a harbinger of bad omen, especially to the royal family.
Lugh, Master of Skills
Lugh is the Celtic god honored for his skills and gifts as a craftsman. He is the god of blacksmiths, metal-workers and artisans. In his aspect as a harvest god, he is honored on August 1, on the festival known as Lughnasadh or Lammas. Lugh is associated with craftsmanship and skill, particularly in endeavors involving creativity. Although not specifically a war god, Lugh was known as a skilled warrior. His weapons included a mighty magic spear, which was so bloodthirsty that it often tried to fight without its owner. According to Irish myth, in battle, the spear flashed fire and tore through the enemy ranks unchecked.
The Morrighan, Goddess of War and Sovereignty
The Morrighan is known as a Celtic war goddess, but there’s a lot more to her than that. She’s associated with rightful kingship, and the sovereignty of the land. The Morrighan often appears in the form of a crow or raven, or is seen accompanied by a group of them. In the stories of the Ulster cycle, she is shown as a cow and a wolf as well. The connection with these two animals suggest that in some areas, she may have been connected to fertility and land.
Rhiannon, Horse Goddess of Wales
In the Welsh mythological cycle, the Mabinogion, Rhiannon is known as a goddess of the horse. However, she also plays a crucial role in the kingship of Wales. The horse appears prominently in much of Welsh and Irish mythology. Many parts of the Celtic world — Gaul in particular — used horses in warfare, and so it is no surprise that these animals turn up in the myths and legends or Ireland and Wales.
Taliesin, Chief of the Bards
Although Taliesin is a documented historical figure in Welsh history, he has managed to become elevated to the status of a minor god. His mythologized story has elevated him to the status of a minor deity, and he appears in the tales of everyone from King Arthur to Bran the Blessed. Today, many modern Pagans honor Taliesin as a patron of bards and poets, since he is known as the greatest poet of all.
It is easy to spot the ruler of this day by its name. In the word Friday, we see the roots of the name of the Norse goddess Freya, a goddess of love and fertility, and the most beautiful and propitious of the goddesses thus the verse “Friday’s child is loving and giving.”
In Spanish this day of the week is called Viernes and is derived from the goddess Venus. Matters of love, human interaction, the fluidity of communication, sewing and the creation of artistic garments, household improvement, shopping, and party planning all fall under the aspects of Friday and its ruling planet, Venus.
Friday’s angels are Ariel/Uriel, Rachiel, and Sachiel. Rachiel also concerns himself with human sexuality and is a presiding spirit of the planet Venus.
On Fridays, the hour of sunrise and every eight hours after that are also ruled by Venus, and that makes these times of the day doubly blessed. These four hours are the strongest four hours for conducting ritual.
Check the local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine your local sunrise.
Friday’s Witchery
Love magick is a perennial popular topic. However, there is more to this topic than meets the eye. There are many enchanting layers here for us to explore on this day of the week. What about creating a loving home, or producing a loving and nurturing family? What about keeping your intimate relationships vital and on track? How about promoting happy, healthy, and enduring friendships? See, there is more to be considered than just the “You shall be mine…” type of fictional love spell.
Don’t forget that many of the deities associated with Fridays are also parents. So, yes, while this is the day to work on romance, sex, and love spells, there is additional magick to be considered here, which makes Fridays a more well-rounded and bigger opportunity for witchery than many folks ever truly realize. The truest, strongest magick always comes from the heart.
Magickal Applications for Friday
Friday is named after the Norse goddesses of love, Freya and Frigga. There seems to be some debate as to whom the day is actually named after, so I thought I would share a little information so you can decide for yourself.
In Latin, this day is known as Dies Veneris, “Venus’s day.” In Greek, it’s Hermera Aphrodites, which translates to the “day of Aphrodite.” In Old English, this day is called Frige- daeg, or “Freya’s day.” This day has the Germanic title of Frije-dagaz, which, once again, could be Freya’s day or Frigga’s day.
Both Freya and Frigga were Norse goddesses of love and were the Teutonic equivalent of the Greco-Roman Venus/Aphrodite. However, Freya was one of the Vanir—the gods of fertility who supervised the land and sea—and she was the leader of the Valkyries. Frigga, Odin’s wife, was the goddess of the heavens and of married love. She was one of the Aesir—the gods associated with battle, magick and the sky. Freya and Frigga could be looked upon as different aspects of the same goddess. They both were called on to assist in childbirth and then in naming of the new baby. Frigga represented the faithful wife and loving mother, while Freya, who really captured the hearts and imagination of the Norse people, was the passionate mistress and lover.
Fridays classically are days for love, fertility, romance, and beauty magick, as well as working for happiness, harmony in the home, and friendship. So let’s take a look at some of the mythology involved with this loving, voluptuous, passionate, and luxurious day of the week, and see where it leads us.
The More You Know Fridays – Feast of Samhain
“The Celts honored the opposing balance of intertwining forces of existence: darkness and light, night and day, cold and heat, death and life. The Celtic year was divided into two seasons: the light and the dark, celebrating the light at Beltane on May 1st and the dark at Samhain on November 1st. Therefore, the Feast of Samhain marks one of the two great doorways of the Celtic year. Some believe that Samhain was the more important festival, since it marked the beginning of a new dark-light cycle. The Celts observed time as proceeding from darkness to light because they understood that in dark silence comes whisperings of new beginnings, the stirring of the seed below the ground. Therefore, the Celtic year began with the season of An Geamhradh, the dark Celtic winter, and ended with Am Foghar, the Celtic harvest. The Celtic day began at dusk, the beginning of the dark and cold night, and ended the following dusk, the end of a day of light and warmth. Since dusk is the beginning of the Celtic day, Samhain begins at dusk on October 31. Samhain marks the beginning of An Geamhradh as well as the New Year. Whereas Beltane was welcomed in the summer light with joyous celebrations at dawn, the most magically potent time of Samhain was at night. Oidhche Shamhna, the Eve of Samhain, was the most important part of the celebration. Villagers gathered the best of the autumn harvest and slaughtered cattle for the feast. The focus of each village’s festivities was a great bonfire. Villagers cast the bones of the slaughtered cattle upon the flames. (Our word bonfire comes from these “bone fires.”) Personal prayers in the form of objects symbolizing the wishes of supplicants or ailments to be healed were cast into the fire. Many sacrifices and gifts were offered up in thanksgiving for the harvest. With the great bonfire roaring, the villagers extinguished all other fires. Each family then solemnly lit their hearth from the one great common flame, bonding all families of the village together. As they received the flame that marked this time of beginnings, people surely felt a sense of the kindling of new dreams, projects and hopes for the year to come.”
Your Astronomy for Friday, October 6th
The Moon is in Aries until 7:55 PM, after which the Moon is in Taurus.
The Moon is void from 6:37 PM to 7:55 PM.
The Moon is waning and in its Full Moon phase.
The Full Moon occurred yesterday in the sign of Aries, and the Last Quarter Moon will occur on October 12th.
Moon in Aries
We’re motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to start something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
The Sky This Week for October 6 to October 8
Friday, October 6
The second brightest asteroid of 2017 puts on a nice show in October’s sky. Minor planet 7 Iris glows at magnitude 7.5, which is bright enough to see through binoculars from the suburbs. It resides in the constellation Aries the Ram, a region that climbs high in the east by late evening. Iris stands 3° due east of Aries’ brightest star, magnitude 2.0 Hamal (Alpha [a] Arietis), all week.
Saturday, October 7
Uranus reaches opposition in less than two weeks, but it is already a tempting evening target. The ice giant world rises within a half-hour after sunset and climbs more than 30° above the eastern horizon by 10 p.m. local daylight time. The magnitude 5.7 planet lies in Pisces, 1.4° west-northwest of magnitude 4.3 Omicron (o) Piscium. Although Uranus glows brightly enough to see with the naked eye under a dark sky, binoculars make the task much easier. A telescope reveals the planet’s blue-green disk, which spans 3.7″.
Mars reaches aphelion at 6 p.m. EDT, when the planet’s orbital motion carries it farthest from the Sun. It then lies 154.9 million miles (249.2 million kilometers) from our star.
Sunday, October 8
Look high in the east after darkness falls this week and you should see autumn’s most conspicuous star group. The Great Square of Pegasus stands out in the evening sky at this time of year, though it appears balanced on one corner and looks more diamond-shaped. These four almost equally bright stars form the body of Pegasus the Winged Horse. The fainter stars that form the rest of this constellation’s shape trail off to the square’s west.
Mercury passes behind the Sun from Earth’s perspective at 5 p.m. EDT. This means the innermost planet lies on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth and remains hidden in our star’s glare. It will return to view in the evening sky at the end of October
