St. Chad and the Holy Wells Day

This day was sacrd to St. Chad, in Old English Cheadda, pronounced Chad-da, the patron saint of healing wells and medicinal springs; St. Chad would spend hours in meditation and prayer, naked and immersed in water up to his neck. His symbol was the Crann Bethadh, the tree of life.

The tradition on this day is to make an offering of flowers and sweet cakes to the deity of the well or spring closest to your home. For those who dwell in the city, place a small table with a fountain on it near the front door. Place your flowers and cakes next to the fountain. Ask a simple blessing for good fortune for the coming year. When you enter your home, drop a coin in the fountain for continued prosperity.
