Celebrating Other Spirituality 365 Days A Year – The Agnoialia/Festival of Vediovis

May 21

The Agnoialia/Festival of Vediovis

The ancient Roman Agnoalia was held on January 9 and May 21 possibly for Janus. It seems that even Romans were a bit confused about the particular feast day. However, just to be on the safe side, on each occasion, a ram was sacrificed at the Regia. Other than that, little is known about the Agnoalia.

Vediovis or Vedius was a Roman God closely connected with the God Jupiter. However, he was considered to be the opposite site of Jupiter and therefore associated with things that were harmful, including the Underworld. Originally, Vedius was a deity of the swamps and volcanic activity. There were several temples to Vedius, and annually on this date a she-goat was sacrificed to him to placate the eruptive forces of Nature and the Underworld.
