This morning while walking with my dog, I caught myself growing impatient, wanting to hurry the walk so I could get home and relax with a morning coffee. I decided to use this as an opportunity to practice living and appreciating the moment for what it is. The easiest way I know of to do this is to focus on the positive aspects of the moment that I find myself in.
The first thing I noticed was how fresh and crisp the air was. A feeling of relief washed over me almost immediately as I settled more deeply into the appreciation of the air I was breathing, my two legs walking effortlessly, and my cute little dog prancing ahead of me, sniffing around happily – eager to embrace the array of sights, sounds and smells all around.
I noticed some Magpies squaking and hopping around on the path up ahead. My parents have always taught me that Magpies are a “bad bird” because they steal and eat the eggs of sweet little songbirds. Ordinarily, a dissonant feeling hangs over me like a dark cloud when Magpies are around. I usually curse them for scaring the rest of the birds away from our yard. I realized in this particular moment, however, that I don’t really mind Magpies at all and actually find them to be quite beautiful. Surely they have their own purpose for sharing this planet with the rest of us, so who am I to judge them for their eating habits? Besides, I love all birds. They are divine creatures of the sky. It a privilege and honor when they come down to earth and share their magic. I wondered if the Magpies had a message for me. Silly me, I should have known!
Later this morning, I was scrolling through my WordPress feed when this omen appeared as confirmation! Thank you Magpies for alerting me to another aspect of my shadow side so that more light can enter my being. I look forward to the “terrific” surprise that awaits me today.
