April Fools’ Day

Even if you’re on the right track,
you’ll get run over if you just sit there.
—Will Rogers

April Fools’ Day, the classic Festival of Fools ruled over by the Norse trickster God Loki. In the rural countryside of Scotland this is “hunt the gawk day” (cuckoo-hence fool) and a time to send friends on pointless errands for articles such as pigeons’ milk, hens’ teeth, and elbow grease.

The origin of the day are uncertain, but it may have originated in France. It was the custom on this day to fool the evil spirits that were believed to be about so that they would not interfere with fertility—a necessity in ancient times.
