In the Witch’s Tool Chest: Incense Incidentals

Harm NoneIn the Witch’s Tool Chest: Incense Incidentals

When choosing incense for a ritual, try picking one that matches your magickal goal. For instance, if you are doing magick for healing, you may wish to use an incense that contains eucalyptus, sandalwood, or lavender. On the other hand, if you are doing magick for peace, you may want bergamot or jasmine.

Many of us love incense but have problems with allergies or sensitivity to strong smells. Luckily, there are many types of incense these days that are made with completely natural ingredients (essential oils instead of perfume oils), which are less likely to irritate the sensitive. Just read labels and descriptions carefully. And if you are doing a ritual inside, remember that less is more. Whatever your personal preferences, if you are doing rituals with others, it is good etiquette to go with something mild and natural, just in case.

Witches Spell-A-Day for Tuesday, January 3rd – Building Bridges

Spell of RelaxationBuilding Bridges

On January 3, 1870, construction began on the Brooklyn Bridge. Let’s do a bridge building spell.

Do you have a goal that seems impossible to reach? You Need a bridge! For this spell, you will need some sculpting clay, a dish of water, and some embroidery thread.

Sculpt two islands of appropriate colors representing today and goal. If your goal is wealth, then your goal island should be green. If you want romance, make it pink. Your thread should also be goal colored.

Form a pillar on each island from which a bridge can be built.

Place the water dish between the finished islands. Speak the story of your problem: I am ______and I want ___________, but I don’t see a way to get it. I need a bridge.

String the thread in a loop from the today island to the goal island and tie a know. Say: I am building a bridge. Repeat nine times.

When you’re ready say three times: I have a bridge! I will reach my goal!

Let’s Talk Witch – Working with Energy

Crown Prince
Let’s Talk Witch – Working with Energy

To really feel magic, to make spells work and to get the right result from a ritual you need ENERGY.

Every living thing has its own energy, whether it is a flower, a crystal, a person or a pebble. All of the ingredients you might gather together for a spell will have their own individual energies and characteristics. If you use a wand, that has its own energy too, but the real energy comes from YOU.

Working with energy is really a combination, you can draw energy up from the Earth or from an item such as a crystal and you channel it through yourself, but you also add a bit of energy from your inner self as you do so. When you are in ritual you might also call upon the God and Goddess to lend their energy to your workings too, you can raise energy from other sources as well. The elements can provide us with energy too – Earth, Air, Fire and Water all provide sources of energy that we can tap into.

But generally you are also the conduit, you summon the energy, you gather it, you add to it and you direct it.
Everyone has energy within them, everyone has the power to access it, to tap into it and use it. Unfortunately most people have no idea how to do so, and boy are they missing out.

The energy created by our bodies and by the spirit within our bodies is generally referred to as the aura. The energy that flows around and through our bodies is usually referred to as chi.

I would like you to try something now… yep right now… rub both your hands together (palms together) quickly for a few seconds, then very, very slowly pull them apart. Can you feel anything? You should feel a slight pull or a tingling sensation. What you can feel in between your hands is energy, that’s the stuff we want to work with.

Another exercise to try is to hold your hands a couple of feet apart, palms inwards and slowly bring your hands together. You will hopefully start to feel a pressure as your hands get closer, a resistance – again this is energy. (Don’t worry if you don’t feel it at first, sometimes it takes some practice.)

Part of being a witch is to be connected to the Earth, her plants and her creatures, to be aware of the energies around us so that we can connect and interact with them.

You can form the energy and one of the most well used forms is the cone of power. This usually happens within a circle, the energy is raised by chanting and/ or dancing in a circle, the energy builds and forms into an upwardly pointing cone that shapes itself in the centre of the circle and rises skywards. Once the cone is ready and it is felt that no more energy can be added, it is released and sent to its destination.

On a smaller scale we raise and direct energy when we work a spell, for instance a candle spell. We would take the energy from the Earth, channel it through our body and out through our hands and into a candle, this will charge the candle with energy. We add our intent and any other ‘ingredients’ such as herbs and oils. Once the candle is burning it releases the energy we filled it with, that energy then goes on its merry way to fulfil the intent that it was meant for.

The Witches Guide To Tuesday

Book of ShadowsThe Witches Guide To Tuesday

A god, goddess, or planet governs each day of the week. It is usually easy to spot the ruler of the day by its name. The word Tuesday, however, is not so easy, but if we look at the word in Spanish, Martes, we clearly see its connections to Mars.

Because Tuesday revolves around the energy of Mars, Tuesdays are good for business, mechanical things, buying and selling animals, hunting, beginning studies, gardening, sexual activities, and confrontation. This is a day for sex magick, energy, stamina, and health. As in the old saying, Tuesdays child is full of grace, is also good for success magick and defense against enemies.

Angels of Tuesday are Camael, Samael, Satael, Amabiel, Friagne, and Hyniel. When invoked, Camael takes the form of a leopard. In Druid mythology he is a god of war, which is why we see him associated with Mars. Camael is said to be a member of the “Magnificent Seven” in some circles. Camael is another “terminator” angel.

Samael walks both worlds as a magician and sorcerer. some see him as the angel of death, others as “the bright and poisonous one.” Many consider him more of a demon, and accuse him of being Satan. However, there is reference to the satans (plural) as enforcers of the law, a sort of angelic police, if you will. Supposedly, when Samael is around, dogs howl in the night. On one hand, he is the ruler of the fifth heaven and in charge of two million angels; on the other, he is the one who changed into a serpent and convinced Eve to partake of the forbidden fruit of knowledge.

Satael is an angel of air invoked in magic rites and is the presiding spirit of the planet Mars. Amabiel is another spirit of the planet Mars; however he spends his energy on issues of human sexuality. Friagne, also an angel of this day, is invoked from the east. He is a member of the fifth heaven. Hyniel also belongs to this day and is subject to the east wind.

On Tuesdays the hour of sunrise and every eight hours after that are also ruled by Mars, and that makes these times of the day doubly blessed. These four hours are the strongest ones to do ritual in. Check your local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine your local sunrise.

Pagan Guide to Days of the Week – Tuesday

WitchPagan Guide to Days of the Week – Tuesday

The English name is derived from old English Tiwesdaeg, meaning “Tiw’s Day,” the day of Tiw or Tyr, the god of single combat, victory, and heroic glory in Norse mythology. The Romans equated him with Mars, god of war. In the Indo-Aryan languages the name of the day is taken from Angaraka ‘one who is red in colour,” a title for Mangal, the god of war, and the planet Mars.

A Courageous Challenger

It is not only wise men and women who were once persecuted for their adherence to the old ways, or for so-called “heresy.” Although he did not pay the price with his life, as did so many during the Burning Times, the German religious reformer Martin Luther was forced into hiding for criticizing the then almost omnipotent Roman Catholic Church. And it was on this day in 1521 that the papal bull Decer Romanum Pontificem (“It Befits the Roman Pontiff”), issued by Pope Leo X, excommunicated the Protestant Luther following his public burning of a previous papal bull, Exsurge Comine (“Arise, O Lord”).

Locating the Lost

If you feel that you cannot move forward into the new year because your mind is still haunted by something or someone that went missing last year, try a session of superpendulism. In other words, dangle a pendulum over a map: it may indicate the where-abouts of the lost object or person.

Third Day of the First Moon (China)
CHIN MU

Themes: Health; Longevity; Femininity; Magic

Symbols: Peach; Mulberry; Cats; Gold-toned Objects

About Chin Mu: Chin Mu is the Queen of the West in China, dispensing peaches that cure disease and grant eternal life to all who eat them. Chinese art depicts her as an ageless, beautiful woman living in a golden castle (a solar symbol), thereby getting her translated name of “golden mother.” She is also sometimes shown as a cat-woman, which represents her yin energy and connection with sorcery.

To Do Today: Honoring Chin Mu today brings health, long life, and a year filled with magic. One simple way to do this is by wearing a piece of gold jewelry or gold clothing. Traditionally, Chinese women carry a bowl of hot vinegar into each room of the house today to protect those who live there from sickness all year. To try this yourself, slice up a peach (frozen if necessary) and add it to the heated vinegar (peach tea bags work, too, and release a nice fragrance). The peach invokes Chin Mu’s blessing. Walk clockwise around the home, visualizing it filled with golden light (you can pray or chant as you go, if you wish). If you’re pressed for time, eat a peach or drink some mulberry wine instead and internalize Chin Mu’s hearty energies just the same!

Finally, meditate on the feminine aspects of yourself and the divine (a good time to do this is during your morning shower, or while driving to work). Honor the women who have influenced your life, even if you do this just by saying thanks.

Magickal Day of Tuesday

Wiccan Magickal Day of Tuesday

Named for the Norse god Tyr, who was a deity of heroism and combat, Tuesday is a very martial sort of day – color associations include bright red and oranges, as well as warrior-like metals such as iron and steel.

The ancient Romans called this day Martis, after the warrior god Mars – other deities associated with Tuesday include Ares, the Morrighan, and other gods of battle and glory. Red gemstones like rubies and garnets come into play on Tuesdays, as do herbs and plants such as thistles, holly, coneflowers and cacti – you’ll notice these are all sharp, prickly plants!

One of the interesting – and more than a little amusing – aspects of Tuesday magic is that in addition to war and conflict against your enemies, this is a day also associated with marriage. You can also use this day of the week for magical workings connected to protection and initiation. Use Tuesday to assert yourself, make a mark and stake your claims

The Sky This Week for January 3 to January 8

fantasyThe Sky This Week for January 3 to January 8

By Richard Talcott

Tuesday, January 3

The Quadrantid meteor shower reaches its peak this morning. And, with the waxing crescent Moon setting before 10 p.m. local time, observers with clear weather will have ideal conditions. Under a dark sky, viewers can expect to see up to 120 meteors per hour — an average of two per minute. The meteors appear to radiate from a spot in the northern part of the constellation Boötes. This region climbs high in the northeast as dawn approaches, which makes the hours after midnight the best for viewing.

Wednesday, January 4

Earth reaches perihelion, the closest point to the Sun during its year-long orbit, at 9 a.m. EST. The two then lie 91.4 million miles (147.1 million kilometers) apart. It surprises many people to learn that Earth comes closest to the Sun in the dead of winter, but the cold weather in the Northern Hemisphere at this time of year arises because the Sun lies low in the sky.

The Sun is in the news more than once today. Although people in the Northern Hemisphere experienced the shortest day of the year two weeks ago (at the winter solstice December 21), the Sun has continued to rise slightly later with each passing day. That trend stops this morning for those at 40° north latitude. Tomorrow’s sunrise will arrive a second or two earlier than today’s. This turnover point depends on latitude. If you live farther north, the switch occurred a few days ago; closer to the equator, the change won’t happen until later this month.

Thursday, January 5

First Quarter Moon arrives at 2:47 p.m. EST. Our satellite rises in the east around noon local time but doesn’t become prominent until the Sun sets around 5 p.m. By 6 p.m., it appears due south and nearly two-thirds of the way to the zenith. The Moon’s half-lit orb then lies among the background stars of southern Pisces.

Friday, January 6

Jupiter dominates the morning sky in early January. The giant planet rises before 1 a.m. local time and climbs nearly halfway to the zenith in the southern sky by the time twilight begins. Jupiter shines brilliantly at magnitude –2.0 and shows a disk that spans 36″ when viewed through a telescope. A small scope also reveals the planet’s four bright moons, though you may have to hunt for one of them this morning. The shadow of volcanically active Io starts to transit Jupiter at 5:24 a.m. EST, and the moon itself begins to cross the planet’s disk at 6:37 a.m.

Saturday, January 7

The variable star Algol in Perseus appears faintest at 12:30 a.m. EST tomorrow morning, when it shines at magnitude 3.4. If you start watching it immediately after darkness falls, you can see it dim from its peak brightness (magnitude 2.1) to minimum and then rise back to maximum all in a single night. This eclipsing binary star runs through a cycle from minimum to maximum and back every 2.87 days, but the drop from peak brightness and subsequent rise lasts only about 10 hours. Algol appears in the eastern sky after sunset and passes nearly overhead around 8 p.m. local time.

The dwarf planet Pluto is in conjunction with the Sun at 2 a.m. EST. The distant world then lies on the far side of the Sun from our perspective and can’t be seen.

Sunday, January 8

Although Mercury passed between the Sun and Earth in late December, it already has returned to view before dawn. This morning, you can find the inner planet 9° above the southeastern horizon 30 minutes before sunrise. Shining at magnitude 0.2, it should show up through the twilight glow. If you don’t see it right away, binoculars will bring it into view. A telescope reveals Mercury’s 8″-diameter disk, which appears one-third illuminated.

Use the power of this Year Ahead Tarot reading to gain insight, get clarity, find resolution, and make a transformation! It’s time to reveal your year ahead!

Position 1: Your Sunset Card

Lessons from the previous year

This first card in the spread looks at what you’ve accomplished (or not) in the past year. For this card, focus on the past — but with an eye toward using that energy for the future. There is always something to be learned from the past, and it shapes who you are, so let this card take you back for a moment before we move forward.

Position 2: Your Horizon Card

What you can expect in the next year

What do you want to achieve in the next year? What are your biggest hopes and aspirations? Choose your second card, and focus your mind on what you’d like to see happen in your life — whether that’s finding a new relationship, tackling a new career goal, or even just spending more time relaxing. Search inside yourself to determine your highest purpose for the year.

Position 3: Your Obstacle Card

A challenge you’ll face this year

Let’s face it — everything worth having comes with challenges. The important thing is to face them with thoughtfulness and poise. This third Tarot card will give you a glimpse at the type of challenge you may encounter as you strive to achieve the objective you set with the Horizon card.

Position 4: Your Strength Card

How to harness your inner power

Now that you’ve seen your challenges, how are you going to resolve any issues that arise? Let the Tarot cards reveal that in this fourth position. What inner talents and strengths do you possess that can help you? What untapped energies exist that you can use this year? Let this Tarot card guide you and free you from doubt as you find the confidence to succeed.

Position 5: Your Advice Card

Lessons you learned last year

Now that you’ve looked back and determined where you want to go in the future, take a second to examine what you have learned so far. This lesson, whatever it is, will inform your next steps. What is this Tarot card telling you to do now? What happened last year that you want to avoid this year or what happened that you want to repeat? Ask yourself these types of questions as you look at the Tarot card to help yourself understand the lesson it’s trying to impart.

Position 6: Your Navigation Card

Guidance for the year ahead

This is the card you have been waiting for. Look at the Tarot card and ask, “What do I feel right now is the very best action for me to take?” The card’s character should help you focus your mind and your energy. You might want to write down your thoughts, or compile a list of the next steps you want to take on your journey. It’s hard sometimes to see how to reach large milestones, but life is full of small moments that we can use to our best advantage — if we take the time to plan and prepare ourselves now.

Position 7: Your Clarity Card

Your personal theme for the year

Even though you have examined the lessons of the past, chosen your aim, and even looked at how to reach it, you may still need to find clarity. In this case, maybe focus on the big picture — how does all of this fit into your overall life plan? What type of person are you hoping to become? What does this mean for your higher purpose? Use that energy to set your intention for the year to come, and tell yourself exactly what that is, say it out loud and imprint it in your heart and mind.

There you have it! A quick 7-card Tarot spread that will allow you to determine your heart’s desire and achieve your highest goals for the upcoming year.
