October 24th
United Nations Day, Anthony Mary Claret
It was on this day in 1945 that the world peacekeeping organization known as the United Nations was formally established (Charter, 1954).
Anthony Mary Claret (1807-70) began the Missionary of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and later became the bishop of Santiago de Cuba. After narrowly escaping and assassination attempt by a gentleman whose mistress had been converted, Anthony fled to Spain, where he became confessor to Queen Isabella II and went into exile with her during the revolution of 1868. His contribution to education extended to the establishment of a natural history museum and school of language and music.
