Ambarvalia/Oak Apple Day/ Runic half-month of Odal commences

Ambarvalia was the Roman festival of purification in honor of Ceres and the Dea Dia, involving ritual walking around fields of growing crops to gain divine favor for the plants. In England, the festival became Oak Apple Day, commemorating the escape of Charles II from Cromwell’s army by hiding in an oak ree. It is customary to wear oak leaves on this day until midday. The rune Odal signifies ancestral property, the homestead, and all those things that are “one’s own.”

Memorial Day One

Sunday, May 29

Traditionally, Sunday is the first day of the week. It is also known as the Lord’s Day from it original association with the Lord, that is, the Sun God, personified as Helios, Apollo, Ogmios, Mithras, and St. Elia. But in the Northern Tradition, the sun is seen as feminine, personified as the goddess known as Phoebe in East Anglia and Saule in eastern Europe. The sun rules the conscious element of the human being, the ego, the real self, and Sunday is the day on which this conscious power is at its most effective.

The Sky This Week for May 29 to June 5

Memorial Day Three

The Sky This Week for May 29 to June 5

Mars is at its closest approach, but Jupiter is no slouch in the night sky this week.
By Richard Talcott

Sunday, May 29

• Last Quarter Moon arrives at 8:12 a.m. EDT. It rises around 1:30 a.m. local daylight time and climbs higher in the southeast as dawn approaches. During this period, our half-lit satellite lies near the center of Aquarius the Water-bearer.

Monday, May 30

• Mars comes closest to Earth at 6 p.m. EDT, when it lies 46.8 million miles (75.3 million kilometers) from our home world. This marks the planet’s second major milestone during its current apparition, following last week’s opposition. The Red Planet appears low in the southeast as darkness falls and grows more prominent as the evening wears on and it climbs higher. By midnight local daylight time, it stands one-third of the way to the zenith in the southern sky against the backdrop of southeastern Libra. The world shines at magnitude –2.0, just a tick fainter than at opposition. When viewed through a telescope, however, the planet’s ocher-colored disk now spans 18.6″, a tad larger than last week. Look for subtle dark markings along with a whitish north polar cap. For more details on viewing the planet, see “Observe Mars at its best” in the May Astronomy.

Tuesday, May 31

• Neptune rises before 2 a.m. local daylight time this week and appears low in the southeast before dawn. The distant world glows at magnitude 7.9, so you’ll need binoculars or a telescope to spot it. Fortunately, it lies near a brighter star that will help guide you. Look for the planet 0.5° southeast of 4th-magnitude Lambda (l) Aquarii. You can confirm a sighting of Neptune through a telescope, which reveals the planet’s 2.3″-diameter disk and blue-gray color.

Wednesday, June 1

• The conspicuous Summer Triangle asterism dominates the eastern sky in late evening. Vega, the triangle’s brightest member, shines at magnitude 0.0 and stands highest of the three stars. To its lower left lies Deneb; at magnitude 1.3, it is the faintest of the trio. Magnitude 0.8 Altair resides at the bottom right and completes the bright asterism. Despite its name, the Summer Triangle appears prominent from late spring until winter begins.

Thursday, June 2

• Saturn lies opposite the Sun in our sky tonight (officially at 3 a.m. EDT on June 3) and reaches its peak visibility for 2016. The ringed planet appears low in the southeast as darkness falls and grows more prominent as the evening wears on and it climbs higher. It stands about one-third of the way to the zenith in the southern sky around 1 a.m. local daylight time. Saturn lies among the background stars of southern Ophiuchus and shines at magnitude 0.0, nearly 10 times brighter than any of this constellation’s stars. When viewed through a telescope, the dramatic ring system spans 42″ and tilts 26° to our line of sight, while Saturn’s family of moderately bright moons appears next to the gorgeous world.

Friday, June 3

• The Moon reaches perigee, the closest point in its orbit around Earth, at 6:55 a.m. EDT. It then lies 224,402 miles (361,140 kilometers) away from us.

Saturday, June 4

• Another comet in the growing crowd of such objects discovered by the Pan-STARRS telescope in Hawaii makes its appearance in June’s morning sky. Comet PANSTARRS (C/2013 X1) currently glows around 7th magnitude in southern Aquarius. As a bonus today, the comet’s head lies less than 1° east of the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) while the comet’s tail grazes this bright planetary. From most of the United States, you’ll need a haze-free southeastern horizon to spot the comet through a telescope shortly before dawn breaks.

• New Moon occurs at 11:00 p.m. EDT. At its new phase, the Moon crosses the sky with the Sun and so remains hidden in our star’s glare.

Sunday, June 5

• Mercury reaches greatest elongation today, when it lies 24° west of the Sun and stands 6° high in the east a half-hour before sunrise. The innermost planet shines at magnitude 0.5 and shows up easily through binoculars if you have an unobstructed horizon. When viewed through a telescope, Mercury appears 8″ across and about one-third lit.

Wishing You & Yours A Very Blessed & Beautiful Memorial Weekend! May The Goddess Bless All Our Service People!

Memorial Day Two

Take This Hand

On the day when our soldiers took their stand,
leaving behind them their life, their love; A
voice inside said “this is my wish that you
defend my shores till peace returns.”

So, take this hand, it is broken, crippled for
you, your life to protect, Every time that you
look, a Memorial you’ll see, for unto to you,
I gave my all.

Let each person give thought to where I’ve been,
leaving behind them criticism and condemnation,
for where I’ve been, it brought tears and fear
yet, inside I knew, that peace would return.

So, take this hand, it has been shattered,
broken for you, your life to protect, Every time
that you see me, a Memorial you’ll see, for unto
to you, I gave my all.

To each and every person that gave of themselves
during time of conflict, I dedicate this to you,
for you truly have given your all, for each of us.

‘THINK on THESE THINGS’ for May 26th

‘THINK on THESE THINGS’
By Joyce Sequichie Hifler

It has become increasingly noticeable how the power grab has reached even the lower levels of living. It is a right thing for us to try to raise ourselves. To fail to try would earmark us for failure….and yet up the shaky ladder of success climb, so many bodies without spirits, so little understanding of what is ahead….and often less of what is past.

If we could only realize our power comes not from grasping the coattails of others, but from a higher source that knows the way….that places before us the right steps, the correct manner, the much needed wisdom and inspiration.

Why is it that when all this guidance is available to us, we let the littleness of our souls hold us back, believing all the time that any forward motion is because we have learned how to twist situations to our own avail.

How sad the lot of those who discover all the rungs on their ladder are on the same level. “Power will intoxicate the best hearts, as wine the strongest heads,” wrote Caleb Colton. “No man is wise enough, nor good enough, to be trusted with unlimited power.”

Elder’s Meditation of the Day – May 26

Elder’s Meditation of the Day – May 26

“The man who sat on the ground in his tipi meditating on life and its meaning, accepting the kinship of all creatures and acknowledging unity with the universe of things was infusing into his being the true essence of civilization.”

–Luther Standing Bear, OGLALA SIOUX

There is a concept that says you move toward and become that which you think about. If we think about everything as interconnected and interrelated, we will begin to accept the greater whole and that there is a power who is in charge. If we see the cycles of life, if we see the inner powers, if we see the interdependence of the universe, then we will participate in a harmonious way. We all need to pray and meditate on this. We need to understand the property of unity.

My Creator, let me have the insights of nature and give me the power of acceptance.

May 26 – Daily Feast

May 26 – Daily Feast

Little children should be allowed to imagine, to let their minds run ahead to things that can be and things that never were. The imagination lets us see beyond the actual outline of things as they are. A mind freed of bias can detect times and times ahead. Go back and recapture the imagination you never allowed to develop. Give it the freedom to examine your motives, your feelings, your heart. It will reveal joys and purposes and realign things gone wrong. There is no drab space in the imagination, no tears, and no losses – for that is the purpose of imagination, to remove and heal and let go.

Quality matters

by Ralph Marston

Quality matters. And where quality matters most is in the way you live your life.

The moments of this day are precious, and overflowing with possibilities. Remind yourself to live them with quality and meaning.

If you are doing things just to say you’ve done them, you can do much better. A quality life is guided by love, not by the need to keep up appearances.

When you find yourself feeling envious, impatient, angry or resentful, step back. Take a deep breath and focus your energy on all the things you can do to create a higher quality life for everyone.

Rise above everything that is urgent just because it’s urgent and popular just because it’s popular. See all the opportunities to create meaningful richness, to love, to care, to make a lasting difference, and act on those opportunities.

Quality matters, and a quality life is yours to live right here, right now. Today, and always, life is well worth all the quality you can give it.

The Daily OM for May 26th – Send Healing To Yourself

Send Healing To Yourself
Bounded By Wellness

by Madisyn Taylor

So often we are busy sending love and healing to others that we forget to send healing to ourself.

Most people, when given an opportunity to aid someone in need, are eager to do whatever they can to be of service. Those of us who have chosen to make healing the world a vocation are grateful for any occasion to send light and love to people in our immediate spheres of influence and beyond. As we apply our passion and our principles to this altruistic endeavor, we often forget to send ourselves the same bountiful gifts of wellness, though we ourselves may be in dire need of it. We overlook ourselves, not because we forget, but because we fear that focusing on the self is an indicator of selfishness. It is moreover much more difficult to heal oneself than to heal others because the seeds of uncertainty are more easily banished when we act on another’s behalf. When we send healing light to ourselves, it is important that our intentions and our self-trust be stronger than ever to counteract doubt.

As we bless ourselves in this way, we serve as both an active channel and a passive destination. This should not change the way we interact with the valuable energy we wish to receive, however. Though we may be tempted to consciously direct or influence the manner in which light impacts our lives because we know ourselves most intimately, we should not try to control its path. When we draw the white light of protection and purity to our bodies, taking it into ourselves with each inhalation, our belief in the fact that it will naturally move toward areas of dysfunction will ensure that it flows through every muscle and organ. And when we fill our spaces with this light, our environments are cleared of all the negative energy that can sap our strength and our spirit. Surrounded inside and out with healing light, we feel safe and protected, healthy, relaxed, and content just as those who regularly receive such loving gifts from us do.

If you sincerely believe that there is a part of yourself that exists independently of upset and illness, the love and light you send yourself will help you connect with it. You will see the affirmative impact of this connection almost immediately when you include yourself in the recipients of your healing gifts, as life’s frustrations become more tolerable and your bliss becomes ever more palpable.
