HOW TO CURE A FULL MOON HANGOVER
Do you lose sleep when the moon looms large in the night sky? Do you feel dazed or sensitive?
You might have a full moon hangover.
We all know that the word lunatic originates from the Latin word for moon: luna. Though lunatic is an unsavory word now, it points to a long understanding that strange things – and strange feelings – tend to occur around the lunar phases.
Symbolically, the moon is associated with our inner experience and intuition. And, physically, the moon is associated with our hormonal cycles. A full moon may magnify the energy and intentions you are already moving through.
WHAT IS A FULL MOON HANGOVER?
The way that a full moon hangover looks for each of us is different. For some of us, it can affect our sleep patterns, which in turn alter hormone levels, leaving us feeling feel raw and drained.
If you are working through sadness or grief, the full moon can augment these feelings to the point of catharsis and resolve; or, if you are moving through a period of growth and expansion, the full moon may amplify this energy into a culmination.
Either way, the moon’s soft light may shine some clarity on our more hidden caverns, those emotional realms you may not consciously choose to enter.
TIPS FOR DEALING WITH A FULL MOON HANGOVER
Though there is no “cure” for a full moon hangover, we can use this lunar phase for self-inquiry… with heightened magic to sweeten the medicine.
Here is how we can make the most of the moon’s brimming wisdom during this phase:
PREPARATION
Knowing the moon’s phase is the most easily observable and trackable way to befriend the night sky. Learn what sign the full moon will be in and work with that archetype for greater understanding of what may come up emotionally or energetically.
Notice and track how you feel during different lunar phases – not only the full moon phase. Tracking our cycles of sleep, energy, and feelings can enlighten us and prepare us for better self-care.
If you have any control over your schedule, you can plan for these phases where you may lose sleep or have lower energy levels.
ACCEPTANCE
If you cannot sleep, don’t fight it. If you feel tired, rest. Embrace the cycle, sweet creature. Your body is in rhythm with nature; celebrate that your circadian rhythms are on point and use this time with intention to see what the moon has dredged up for us from our depths to observe.
Frustration does not allow rest, so if you cannot sleep, put on a comfy robe and make a relaxing tea like passionflower, valerian, lavender or chamomile. Use the time you would be sleeping to meditate, journal, watercolor, or set intentions.
Often, when I am awakened during a full moon cycle, I see it as a joyous synchronicity, now is the time to do the inner work that often gets pushed aside for more pressing everyday activities. There is nothing to do in the middle of the night but to fully be with our feelings.
INTEGRATION
This lunar phase can shine light on the shadowy parts; these feelings may not come fully understandable or verbalized. Any big catharsis, realization or transformation must be integrated into your everyday existence so that you do not become fragmented in your experience.
Instead, pull in your new gems of understanding with gratitude and put concerted effort toward being gentle to the body as we move through new and profound energetic changes.
Drink lots of water and broths. Eat nourishing, slow-cooked food. Rest as much as you can. Develop an embodied ritual during the full moon like body oiling, an herbal bath, or a steam.
Integration is a process that cannot be rushed. It is like getting over the flu, though you feel you are through the worst of it, your recovering body needs extra care before feeling totally robust again.
In the same way, if you lose sleep, shed a few tears, or have a metamorphic realization, give yourself time to lean into your newfound insight.
You are a creature of this earth, inseparable from the energetic and physical pulls of nature’s cycles. Allow the full moon to do her work on you.
When we receive moon medicine with grace, we learn how to better nurture ourselves. The lunar pearls of wisdom become a source of kindness and profound self-acceptance.
A person who can accept and nurture themselves always has a soft place to land.

At 9:16 p.m. PST on January 20, 2019, the full moon will be in Leo — and it doubles as a total lunar eclipse.
No matter who you are, it’s impossible to look up at a full moon without feeling awe-inspired. And considering that January brings us a supermoon, which occurs when the orb is at its closest point to Earth, the urge to gaze is slated to be even stronger. Add a total lunar eclipse into the mix (the last until 2021, offering both moon and the surrounding sky a reddish hue) and you have what many are calling the “super blood wolf” moon. It’s safe to say you won’t be able to look away.
As if this celestial cocktail wasn’t high-impact enough, the year’s first full moon occurs in Leo—which really turns up the drama.
WHAT DOES THE FULL MOON IN LEO MEAN?
The moon governs our emotions and moods. And with lunar energies building to a climax in expressive, over-the-top Leo, everyone’s a little more likely to wear their heart on their sleeve.
To make things even more intense, this lunation is both opposite the sun (as are all full moons) and ruled by the sun—stirring up some complicated feelings about being seen and heard. On the one hand, we’re longing for the spotlight; on the other, we’re extremely sensitive about how our audience might perceive us.
Leo loves taking center stage, and basking in the applause that (hopefully) comes with it. We all love to be loved—but when we put ourselves out there, there’s no guarantee that everyone will like us. This full moon reminds us how important it is to love ourselves, no matter how others might feel.
Fortunately, the sun in individualistic Aquarius shows us how to do our thing, without worrying too much about other people’s reactions. In Tarot, The Fool is depicted by a childlike adventurer awash in the energy of her own reckless optimism. She feels the unknown path before her pulling her along and doesn’t get too caught up in the details of where she’s going, nor how she’ll get there. She’s unburdened by any pressure to look cool and couldn’t care less about the looks or whispers that may come along the way. Each step brings her closer to her highest self—that’s all she needs to know.
These days, the world seems like a pretty serious space. Every headline is foreboding. Every social page is a contest. Everyone wants to sell us something. If we’re not careful, we wind up guarded, dissatisfied, and jaded. So, naturally, the time is right to revisit our inner Fool.
How do you recover this valuable flood of naivety when the well is seemingly dried up? Begin by scanning your mind for signs of attempted perfectionism, as this is not in keeping with sweet release. The Fool wears mismatched accessories just because it feels right. She leaves the bed unmade so she can do some morning journaling instead. She ignores the chipped nail. She doesn’t return the text while driving—and promptly forgets to return it at all.
Next, close your eyes and ask yourself, “Where are the white-knuckled areas of my life?” Where have you allowed yourself to think you must have total control? What if everything actually doesn’t depend on you? What a concept! The Fool moves in a state of pure flow. Embrace this want of comfortability by putting on something long and drapey; wear cashmere, if you have it. Literally let your hair down and go barefoot. Visualize yourself un-structuring. Practice letting go.
Finally, the Fool defies convention by listening only to her inner guidance. For children, this comes naturally, as the judgmental voices of nay-sayers and critics have yet to take root in their minds. What did you love to do as a child? When you picture childhood, what does it look like in its happiest moments? I see myself sitting beneath trees, surrounded by my watercolors and paper and dogs. Can you remember your original sense of rightness? It remembers you.
When The Fool comes for you in Tarot, you can be sure the Divine is calling you to trust in Her again and to take a bold step in faith. Your path will most likely be anything but straight, with the next destination forever just out of your line of sight. But with the wisdom of The Fool you can throw caution to the wind. She is here to remind you that your own originality is, and always has been, enough.
