HOME PROTECTION WARD

A ward is something that protects or defends, and when placed around a home it works like a barrier, preventing negativity from entering. However, you have to check on this regularly, just like a wall used to defend a city. How often you need to refresh your ward is completely dependant on your neighborhood and the sort of things following you home. I live in a nice little neighborhood, but right down the street is a not so nice one. Last December my car was stolen from our driveway while I was home by some kids that lived down the road. That being said, my ward needs refreshing rather often. Two to four times a year is usually good, but just remember to keep an eye on it. If you notice it needs refreshing, take down the old ward and reconstruct it.

My favorite ward ritual also comes from The Way of the Hedgewitch by Arin Murphy-Hiscock. Like her threshold protection spell, its easy, quick, and informal.

Supplies
Candle with holder
Dish of water
Dish of earth or salt (you will be sprinkling this outside)
Incense of your choice
Matches or lighter

Directions
Light the candle and, beginning at your threshold or where ever you deem fit (I started in my back yard at the fence since it was easiest for me), walk clockwise around the outside of your home. As you do say:

“I build this boundary with fire.”

Repeat this over and over until you have walked completely around your home.

Next pick up the dish of earth. Again, walk around your home sprinkling dirt as you go.

Repeat:

“I build this boundary with earth.”

Pick up the incense and light it. Walk around your house for the last time repeating:

“I build this boundary with air.”

Standing at your threshold (or starting place), reach out your hands and visualize a shield of energy forming a bubble around your home and property. As you visualize say:

“Fire, water, earth, and air,
Guard this home against all ill will and danger.
Keep this house and those who live in it safe.
I declare this ward to be raised and active.”

And there you have it, a home protection ward! Now sometimes a ward needs to be dissolved. These times would be to refresh a ward, if you move, or if there are major changes that occur in your life or the life of the house, i.e. career change and remodeling.

To disolve a ward, walk counter-clockwise beginning at the same starting point you did to construct the ward. As you do so hold out your hand and visualize it slicing through your ward. As you walk say:

“I dissolve this ward.
You have my thanks for your protection in the past.
I release you with my blessing.”

A little word of warning about wards and protection barriers. If you are keeping something out you are also keeping something in. It is in your best interest to dissolve your barriers once in a while to let out any trapped energy.

Reincarnation seems to be one of the most controversial spiritual topics of our time. Hundreds of books are being published on the subject ject as if the Western world had only recently discovered this ancient doctrine.

Reincarnation is one of Wicca’s most valuable lessons. The knowledge edge that this life is but one of many, that when the physical body dies we do not cease to exist but are reborn in another body answers many questions, but raises a few more.

Why? Why are we reincarnated? In common with many other religions, Wicca teaches that reincarnation is the instrument through which our souls are perfected. One lifetime isn’t sufficient to attain this goal; hence, the consciousness (soul) is reborn many times, each life encompassing a different set of lessons, until perfection is achieved.

No one can say how many lives are required before this is accomplished. plished. We are human and it’s easy to fall into non-evolutionary behavior. Greed, anger, jealousy, obsession and all our negative emotions inhibit our growth.

In Wicca, we seek to strengthen our bodies, minds and souls. We certainly live full, productive earthly lives, but we try to do so while harming none, the antithesis of competition, intimidation and looking out for number one.

The soul is ageless, sexless, non-physical, possessed of the divine spark of the Goddess and God. Each manifestation of the soul (i.e., each body it inhabits on Earth) is different. No two bodies or lives are the same. If this wasn’t so, the soul would stagnate. The sex, race, place of birth, economic class and every other individuality of the soul is determined by its actions in past lives and the lessons necessary to the present.

Good brings good. With this in mind, there’s little reason to act negatively.

Karma means action, and that’s how it works. It is a tool, not a punishment. There’s no way one can “wipe out” karma, and neither is every seemingly terrible event in our lives a byproduct of karma.

We learn from karma only when we’re aware of it. Many look into their past lives to discover their mistakes, to uncover the problems inhibiting progress in this one.

Trance and meditation techniques can help here, but true self-knowledge is the best means of accomplishing this.

Past-life regression can be a dangerous thing, for much self-delusion delusion exists here. I can’t tell you how many Cleopatras, King Arthurs, Merlins, Marys, Nefertitis and other famous persons of the past I’ve met walking around in high-top tennis shoes and jeans. Our conscious minds, seeking past incarnations, easily hold onto such romantic ideals.

If this becomes a problem; if you don’t wish to know your past lives, or lack the means to discover them, look at this life. You can learn everything of relevance about your past lives by examining this life. If you’ve cleared up problems in previous existences, they’re of no concern to you today. If you haven’t, the same problems will reappear, so look at this life.

At night, study your day’s action, noting both positive, helpful actions and thoughts as well as the negative. Then look at the past week, the past year, the past decade. Refer to diaries, journals or old letters if you’ve kept them to refresh your memory. Do you continually make the same mistakes? If so, vow to never repeat them in a ritual of your own design.

The Energy of the Sun

The planetary energy of the Sun is stimulating and warm. It encourages growth and expansion as well as general good feelings all around. It may be used for magick related to the growth of anything; career, family, public influence, wealth, the garden, friendships, love, general abundance, employment opportunities, business. Because the Sun shines down on the whole world, and thus sees everything that happens, the Sun’s planetary energy is occasionally used to find objects as well as protecting us from deception or being “kept in the dark”. Looking at the Sun’s universality in a different way, this energy can be used to find a common thread (we’re all warmed by the same Sun) to encourage new friendships and partnerships and reconciliation where existing ones are threatened.

Many things that correspond to the planetary energy of the Sun also correspond to the elemental energy of Fire.

Yellow, red and particularly bright, shiny crystals and stones tend to correspond to the energy of the Sun. diamond, ruby, chrysolite, yellow topaz, citrine, red garnet, chrysoprase and amber- fossilized tree sap said to contain the energy of the Sun as metabolized by the tree. Corundum and yellow Tiger’s Eye show sparkling designs that remind one of the sun and of course, there is sunstone.

Crystals and metals that correspond to the planetary energy of the Sun can be worn, carried or placed on the body to encourage healing or to draw planetary energies ruled by the sun, such as abundance to the individual. They may also be used to create a gem elixir and ingested, assuming they do not contain toxic materials. Crystals can be placed in a location to draw the desired energies to your home, place of business or vehicle as desired, placed on the altar, held, or gazed upon to enhance energies being raised during spellwork or other focusing and manifesting exercises.

Solar Plants and herbs

Plants that resemble the sun in shape or color, that open during the day and close at night, that follow the sun’s movements during the day, and those plants that are traditionally associated with the winter solstice as well as those that provide winter nourishment when fresh plants are unavailable, such as grains and nuts. Physically, edible Sun plants tend to encourage a feeling of warm satisfaction and medicinal plants affect the heart. sunflower, calendula, marigold, daylily, orange, citron, saffron, pine, mistletoe, rosemary, buttercup, heliotrope, bay laurel, daisy, walnut, acorn, maize, wheat, hops, cloves, cinnamon

Herbs can be incorporated into magick by placing them on the altar in the form of fresh flowers or dried potpourri or incorporated into incense to enhance energies raised during spellwork and ritual of a solar nature. They can also be carried or worn in a pouch or placed in an area to attract these energies. An herbal floor wash will infuse an area with the desired energies, or this may be accomplished via fumigation. Edible plants can be consumed as part of a meal or as part of an elixir or other herbal preparation. Those herbs that are skin-safe can be added to massage oils or fragrance sprays and ritual baths. Whole herbs or essential oils may be used.

Sun fragrances are generous and, to me, home sweet home types of smells, with the exception of a few, which have “special occasion” feels to me. The sorts of smells that fill a temple, or the house on a day when lots of company is coming.

The Winter Solstice is the day most strongly associated with Solar Energy, though it peaks at the Summer Solstice, it declines thereafter.

While animal parts are used for magick in many traditions, they can be difficult or impossible to obtain and some animals are endangered, though you may find using feathers and fur of local animals to be feasible, using important bits of animals that aren’t already raised and slaughtered for food isn’t within the reach or moral compass of most modern witches. Using live animals subjects animals to discomfort and fear and is also not recommended. However, images of animals have a long history of use in magic and images of animals are quite easy to obtain as 2D pictures and 3D sculptures. If you are artistic, the very act of creating these images can help you more closely attune to their energy.

Many magic-users bring color into their working through their choice of colored candles, altar cloth and other items placed on the altar. If you wish to bring solar energy into your daily life, you may choose corresponding colors for your clothing or even chose paint, curtains and carpet colors to draw solar energy into your space.

Would you guess what planet is associated with this day? Easy, isn’t it? You can object that the Sun is not a planet. You are right. It is a star.

Do not get disappointed that you are not meeting any god. For ancient cultures, the Sun and its daily cycle were crucial because their lives depended on its light and warmth making it possible to grow plants and get rid of the fear of the nightly shadows. Every morning, they were afraid the great gold sphere would not rise up in the heavens again. So the Sun was mostly understood as an incarnation of their most important deity and they were begging it with their prayers to come back the other day.

In many Romance languages, Sunday is called the Lord’s Day (Domingo in Spanish, dimanche in French, domenica in Italian: based on the Latin expression Dies Dominica) since this was the day when the God started his one week creation feast.

Evenings find Mars in the same binocular field as the Pleaides star cluster, while the morning sky features the Moon passing close to both Jupiter and Saturn.

Orion the Hunter stands out in the southwest as darkness falls this week. The conspicuous constellation appears slightly askew compared with its appearance in winter’s evening sky. Now, the three-star belt is aligned parallel to the horizon while blue-white Rigel hangs directly below the belt and ruddy Betelgeuse stands directly above.

Monday, March 25
Jupiter continues to grow more prominent before dawn. The giant planet rises before 2 a.m. local daylight time and climbs 30° high in the south an hour before sunup. It also shines at magnitude –2.2, making it the brightest point of light in the morning sky until Venus rises around 5:30 a.m. A telescope reveals at least two conspicuous cloud belts on Jupiter’s 39″-diameter disk. And this morning, North American observers have a great opportunity to watch the shadows of two moons cross the planet’s bright cloud tops. At 3:56 a.m. EDT, Ganymede’s shadow first touches the jovian atmosphere; Europa’s shadow joins it at 4:06 a.m. The black dot cast by Ganymede lifts back into space at 6:04 a.m. followed by Europa’s at 6:27 a.m. Any telescope will provide excellent views of these shadow transits.

One of the spring sky’s finest deep-sky objects, the Beehive star cluster (M44) in the constellation Cancer the Crab, lies high in the south after darkness falls. With the naked eye from under a dark sky, you should be able to spot this star group as a fuzzy cloud. But the Beehive explodes into dozens of stars when viewed through binoculars or a telescope.

Wednesday, March 27
Less than 10 minutes after Jupiter pokes above the southeastern horizon this morning, the waning gibbous Moon rises to the planet’s lower left. The two objects remain neighbors as they ascend in the predawn sky.

Thursday, March 28
Last Quarter Moon arrives at 12:10 a.m. EDT (9:10 p.m. PDT yesterday evening). It rises around 2:30 a.m. local daylight time and climbs higher in the southeast as dawn approaches. During this period, our half-lit satellite lies among the background stars of Sagittarius the Archer, north of the conspicuous Teapot asterism.

Friday, March 29
The Moon moves eastward relative to the background stars an average of 13° every day, and this morning it has traveled to the vicinity of Saturn. The ringed planet rises around 3:15 a.m. local daylight time and the Moon, which now appears as a waning crescent, follows about 10 minutes later. The two remain within 3° of each other throughout the morning hours. Magnitude 0.6 Saturn remains a fixture in northeastern Sagittarius all week. If you target the gas giant through a telescope, you’ll see its 16″-diameter disk surrounding by a stunning ring system that spans 37″ and tilts 24° to our line of sight.

Mars appears 3° south of the Pleiades star cluster both this evening and tomorrow night, making a dramatic sight through binoculars. The ruddy hue of the planet provides a nice contrast to the cluster’s blue-white stars.

Saturday, March 30
This is a good week to look for Sirius in the evening sky. The night sky’s brightest star (at magnitude –1.5) appears in the southwestern sky after twilight ends. It then lies about one-third of the way from the horizon to the zenith from mid-northern latitudes. (The farther south you live, the higher it appears.) If you point binoculars at Sirius, look for the pretty star cluster M41 in the same field of view, just 4° south of the star.

Just as morning twilight starts to paint the sky, Venus pokes above the eastern horizon. The brilliant planet dominates the predawn sky for the next hour as the rosy glow heralding the Sun’s arrival grows brighter. Venus shines at magnitude –3.9, nearly two magnitudes brighter than the second-brightest planet, Jupiter. When viewed through a telescope, the inner world shows a disk that spans 13″ and appears about 80 percent lit.

The Moon reaches apogee, the farthest point in its orbit around Earth, at 8:14 p.m. EDT. It then lies 252,014 miles (405,577 kilometers) from Earth’s center.

Back to the earliest periods of civilization and the moon features prominently as a force of malice. During the ancient Greek period, Hippocrates, widely considered the founding father of modern medicine, tied the power of the moon to human madness. He wrote, “One who is seized with terror, fright and madness during the night is being visited by the goddess of the moon.” This was something the Romans also invested a lot of faith in. The goddess Luna, was believed to have driven her chariot across the night sky each night, hence the lunar cycles. The influence of Luna was said to inspire madness in non-believers. Her name is where we get the word “lunatic” from. Other Greek and Roman goddesses like Artemis and Selene had ties to the moon and were worshipped as such. They were also prominent goddesses of childbirth, so that connection is partly why you continue to hear legends about full moon-induced labor.

Ancient Solar Folklore:

The Egyptians regarded the sun as a child when it was rising, and as an old man when it was setting in the evening. These ideas were also transferred to the annual motion of the sun. Macrobius states that the Egyptians compared the yearly course of the sun with the phases of human life; thus, a little child signified the winter solstice, a young man the spring equinox, a bearded man the summer solstice, and an old man the autumnal equinox. They also thought that Hercules had his seat in the sun, and that he travelled with it round the moon.
