Sip & Soothe

If you have a sore throat, making and sipping this herbal remedy may help. Peel and finely chop a thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger root; peel 1 garlic clove; pick 10 mint leaves. Now place the ginger, garlic, and mint in the center of a clean piece of cheesecloth or muslin, or an unused coffee filter, draw up the sides, and tie a piece of string above the ingredients to form a bag. Bring 2 quarts of water to a boil, add the bag, boil for 5 minutes, then turn off the heat. Add the juice of 2 lemons and leave to infuse for 5 minutes.

Fruit picking tips

If you are able to pick your own fruit, and would like to prevent it from spoiling too quickly, follow the advice given in Lake’s Almanack (1628). “If you would have fruits to keep long, then let them not be over-ripe on the tree and gather them about the first or last quarters of the moon.”

A Holy Harvest

The exaulation of the Holy Cross, or the Triumph of the Cross, is celebrated by many Christians on September 14, commemorating the dedication, on this date in 335, of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem that housed the cross upon which Christ was crucified. In England, September 14 was more commonly called Holy Cross Day, or Holy Rood Day, or more irreverently still, the Day of the Holy Nut,, for this was the traditional date of which nutting, or the harvesting of nuts, began, occasioning a day off and much outdoor frolicking on the part of young men and women.

An Occult Philosopher

September 14 was the date of birth of Henry Cornelius Agrippa (1489 – 1535), a German occultist who wrote De Occultra Philosophia Libri Tres (1531), or Three Books of Occult Philosophy. The first volume, Natural Magic, is especially inspiring for Wiccans.

Book of Shadows

In Wiccan terminology, “Book of Shadows: may have two meanings. Firstly, it may refer to the handbook of Wiccan practices and lore, first published in 1959, that was compiled by the founder of Gardnerian Wicca, Gerald Gardner (1884 -1964). And, secondly it may describe a personal notebook kep by any Wiccan (into which he or she may first have hand-copied information from the coven’s collective Book of Shadows), in which the details of rituals, spells and other magickal workings and observances are detailed and recored. A personal Boook of Shadows should never be ready by anyone other than its owner.
