St. Crispin and Crispinian

The feast day honors two French Catholic brothers, Crispin and Crispinian, the patron Saints of shoemakers. According to one legend, the two brothers were martyred by being pricked to death by a cobbler’s awl. In another tale, they managed to survive four execution attempts because of their devotion to the needy. And yet another tale has them beheaded. However, it is agreed that if one buys a new pair of shoes on St. Crispin Day, he or she will have good fortune the rest of the year.
