The Eight Phases of the Moon

The Moon, Queen of the NIght, and starship of the Mother Goddess, is the influential planetary body in the sky. Our response to her power is deeply embedded in us. She comes to us with a history; the representation of her major phases is still replicated today — )0( — and is used to symbolize the covenant with the Great Goddess. Her eight Phases related to the solar cycle of Pagan holidays, and the symbology is analogous, as both cycles start with the absence of light and march forward sing the same song.

The New Moon Phase

At the begging of Moon’s cycle, she slowly emerges from under the beam of the Sun, where she has been resting and gathering energy for the coming journey. From 0 degrees to 44 degrees in her zodiac cycle, the New Moon celebrates the rebirth of light, just as we do at Yule. The maiden is setting the stage and magic is afoot!

The Crescent Moon Phase

In the Crescent Moon phase (45 degrees – 89 degrees), she appears in the sky like a slim harvest sickle. Her curve mimics the round belly of the letter D. With the faintest of light in the sky, this Moon is poised for action, energizing new projects with fresh power, and offering new challenges. This phase is related to the sabbat of Imbolc.

The First Quater Phase

Seven days after the New Moon, the First Quarter Moon (90 degrees – 134 degrees) can add balance and considerable magic to your endeavors that burgeon with life. The waxing phase is the time to plant your sees, be they ideas or moonflowers. You’ll feel the drive to get a move on, to let go of the past, and be aggressive in working new spells. Half of the Moon is light and half is dark, just like the Quarter Day, Eostre (Ostara) or Spring Equinox, which divides the solar day into equal parts of light and dark.

The Gibbous Phase

Gibbous is a wonderful medieval word that describes the hunchbacked swell of the lady Moon as she moves from Maiden to Mother (135 degrees – 179 degrees). It’s time to evaluate new growth, eliminating what doesn’t work and finding more successful ways of doing things. Refine goals and prepare for the work of the Full Moon. The Gibbous Moon indicates that the most powerful time for magic is about to peak. This phase is related to the sabbat Beltane.

Full Moon Phase

The Full Moon (180 degrees – 224 degrees) reflects the golden glory of the Sun, light the night for ritual or planting or other agrarian* tasks. Crystals, herbs, and oils bated in the Moon’s light will be energized and ready to dedicate for pathwork. Consolidate efforts to move towards completion in short-term projects. This is the last of the big energy in this cycle for growth, but major undertakings can still be aggressively be set in motion. Look to the mythology of Midsummer to find a more profound meaning of the Full Moon

Disseminating Moon Phase

The Disseminating Moon (225 degrees – 269 degrees) indicates that it’s time to start drawing in; the project set in motion at the New Moon is maturing. Diets and other work of “letting go” can only properly be started now with the waning Moon. As the Moon starts to shrink, the side with the rounded curve of the letter D loses light and the viable curve faces the other way shaped like a C. This phase is related to the sabbat of Lammas.

Third Quater Phase

The Third Quater Moon (270 degrees – 314 degrees) is the crone-wise and still very powerful, but no longer fecund**. This Mabon Moon continues to power banishing work, expelling illness, negative thoughts and bad habits. Now is the time to weed and prune your life and in the garden. As worked started at New Moon crystallizes in its completion you are already beginning to feel the draw of a new cycle.

Balsamic Moon Phase

The Balsamic Moon (315 degrees – 360 degrees) provides the three and half days when you can best go indie yourself to search out what drives your passions and dislikes, so that you can understand them and let go. It’s necessary to prepare yourself for the rebirth of the next cycle, even while feeling out of step with everyone in the current one. If you missed the power of the FUll Moon phase to look into the future, the last 30 degrees of this cycle are very potent for prophecy work. This phase is related to the sabbat Samhain.

The Dark Moon

The Dark Moon rests for three and a half days while she gathers information and lays the foundation to implement new ideas. It occurs just before the beginning of the next lunar cycle.

Editor’s Note: The eight phase of the Moon as they are described in this article are different for the Moon’s quarter system, which used on the date pages of this book. The eight phase system divides the Moon cycle into segments, each of which can influence magical begun at that time. The quarter system divides the Moon’s cycle into four parts. The first quarter begins at the New Moon and continues until the Moon has moved 90 degree; the second quarter begins at 90 degrees and continues until the Full Moon (180 degrees); the third quarter begins with the FUll Moon (180 degrees) and continues for another 90 degrees to 270 degrees; and the fourth quarter begins at 270 degrees and continues to 360 degrees, a perfect circle and just before 0 degrees, the place of the New Moon. Although the two systems are different, you can easily compare them and use them together. In the quarter system, the New Moon phase and Crescent Moon phase of the eight-phase system combine to make the first quarter; the First Quarter phase and the Gibbous Moon phase combine to make the second quarter; the Full Moon and the Disseminating Moon phase combine to make the third quarter; The Third Quarter phase and the Balsamic Moon phase comebine to form the Forth Quarter. The DArk Moon is the time just before the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next. Although there are no actual days between cycles, it is the time just before the New Moon when seeds, dreams, and plans of the new cycle await birth.

I call to the Witches,

Both near and far.

No need to name you,

You know who you are.

Come Dane with me,

It doesn’t matter where you are.

Send your soul,

September Full Moon Names and More

Harvest Moon

From Time and Date

The Full Moon closest to the September equinox is called the Harvest Moon, and it is either in September or October.

The Harvest Moon is the Full Moon nearest the September equinox, which occurs around September 22.

Most years, the Harvest Moon is in September, but around every three years, it is in October.

Full Moon Names

Harvest Moon is the most famous of all the Full Moon names. Some sources claim the name originates from ancient Native American tradition. Others point out that Harvest month was recorded as early as in the 700s in both Anglo-Saxon and Old High German languages.

In ancient times, it was common to track the changing seasons by following the lunar month rather than the solar year, which the 12 months in our modern calendar are based on.

From Europe and America

For millennia, people across Europe, as well as Native American tribes, named the months after features they associated with the Northern Hemisphere seasons. Many of these names are very similar or identical.

Today, we use many of these ancient month names as Full Moon names. A common explanation is that Colonial Americans adopted many of the Native American names and incorporated them into the modern calendar.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac famously publishes a list of Full Moon names, and we have chosen to use these as the main Full Moon names. However, it seems that a combination of Native American, Anglo-Saxon, and Germanic month names gave birth to the Full Moon names we use today.

Named After Crops

The most common Native American names for the September Full Moon is Full Corn Moon and Barley Moon, and these names do not vary with the equinox. The October Full Moon was called Hunters Moon, Blood Moon, and Sanguine Moon by different Native tribes. However, this is not to be confused with a total lunar eclipse, also known as a Blood Moon, due to the reddish color the Moon takes on during a total eclipse.

When the Julian calendar was introduced in 45 BCE, the Latin month names became more common. The earlier Pagan and Native American month names have since been reintroduced as Full Moon names, particularly by various Farmer’s Almanacs in the United States.

Short Time Between Moonrises

Regardless of where the name originated, the astronomical significance of the Harvest Moon is the same all over the Northern Hemisphere. The Full Moon closest to the September equinox is astronomically special because the time between one moonrise to the next becomes shorter around this time.

Typically, the Moon rises on average 50 minutes later every day in a lunar month, which is the time it takes the Moon to travel through all the Moon phases. However, for a few days around the Harvest Moon, the Moon rises less than 50 minutes later than the day before.

In the old days, the early moonrise for a few days around the equinox meant that farmers could work and harvest their crops for a longer time in the evenings.

Opposite Seasons

The reverse effect occurs in the Southern Hemisphere, where the astronomical seasons are opposite, and the September equinox is the vernal equinox. Here, the Moon rises more than 50 minutes later than on the previous day around the Harvest Moon. People in the Southern Hemisphere experience the Harvest Moon effect around the March equinox instead.

Harvest Moon in Culture

The September equinox coincides with many cultural events, religious observances, and customs around the world. For example, the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is a harvest festival also celebrated in Vietnam, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

In the US, there are many Harvest Moon festivals with farmers markets, beer- and wine-tasting, craft fairs, concerts, and entertainment. Harvest Moon is also the name of a popular computer game, as well as a 1992 album and song by Canadian musician Neil Young.

A Little About Moon Phases

download

The Moon goes through four different phases every 29 days.

The full (Mother) Moon-this lasts from one night before until one night after the date the Full Moon is shown on a regular calendar. A full Moon is used to bring things to you. A good time for spells for your income to increase, protection for yourself, someone else or your home, etc. It is the best time to consecrate a Ritual tool, hold a Handfasting, marriage or Wiccaning.

Next comes the Waning Moon. This period lasts from the second night after the full Moon until one night before the New Moon. During this period, it is a time to send things away from you such as a build up of negativity around you or to charm an object to help you control a bad habit.

Then comes the New (Crone) Moon. This phase is from one night before until one night after the date the New Moon appears on a regular calendar. This is the time when being able to banish or send away bad habits, negative energy, do a house cleansing, etc.

Lastly is the Waxing Moon. This is a time of new beginnings and to bring good things to you. Use it to start a new project or job or getting to know someone better, etc. It is also a good time for a marriage or Handfasting. To charm an object to carry with you for protection or to do a house blessing, etc.

While I have only listed a very few things that work out better if done during the correct Moon phase. They are meant as a guideline to get you thinking about what else you may do during the correct phase.

Remember every time you do a spell or charm an object what energy you send out comes back to you three times as strong-The Law of Three.

Moon Alert

There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The Moon is in Aquarius.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Today you might have pie-in-the-sky plans for something to do with your home or your family. (It’s a Neptune thang.) Or perhaps, you will have a heart-to-heart conversation with a family member? Whatever happens, you will want to help others today.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

You might spend a lot of time daydreaming and not getting much done today. Don’t worry because we all need days like this. Sometimes dreams are very refreshing. Because your imagination will be stimulated, you might come up with some creative ideas.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Be careful about major purchases or financial ideas today because you might be influenced by subconscious fantasies. For example, you might buy something extravagantly luxurious and later regret it. Or you might have unrealistic plans about how to make money.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Today Mercury is in your sign dancing with fuzzy Neptune, which heightens your sympathy for others. It’s easy for you to put yourself in their place and know exactly how they feel in a particular situation. This is actually a good thing. Compassion and kindness are so important.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Your sympathy for someone today might be so strong that you feel you will do whatever you can to help them because you are truly selfless. In other words, you’re prepared to make a sacrifice on behalf of someone else. Sometimes this is the noble thing to do. Sometimes not.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Today you might idealize a friend, especially someone younger than you, and want to help them. Possibly, you will join forces with a charitable group and do what you can to benefit others who need help? You might also hang out with a friend and just relax in a dreamy way.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

A discussion with a parent, boss or someone in authority might include your concern to try to help people who are less fortunate today. That’s because you feel sympathy for others, and you will use your influence or the influence of someone else if you can help to make a situation better. (A good thing to do.)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Today you might be interested in psyche subjects or anything to do with the occult. This is because your imagination is heightened and you are more interested in dreamy fantasies and unusual ideas. You want to explore something new.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Be careful because Mercury is in one of your Money Houses today and yet, because it is dancing with Neptune, it will make you feel great sympathy for others. You might want to use your money or encourage others to use theirs to help a third party. Make sure you know what you’re doing.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

A conversation with a partner or close friend will be mutually sympathetic today because it’s easy for you to appreciate where this other person is coming from. You will want to benefit them if you can. You will certainly want to help them if they need help.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Today you will excel at any kind of work that requires imagination. You might also become involved in working with animals or pets today, especially if you can alleviate their suffering. For those of you at work, you might become a sympathetic ear for a coworker.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Your creative abilities are heightened today simply because your imagination is in overdrive. This means you will excel at any kind of artistic work or creative efforts that require an appreciation of fantasy and design. You’re in the zone!
