Today’s Meditation 3/6

Today’s Meditation:

It’s very easy not to laugh.  Laughter tends to be a reflection of joy or happiness, and many of us grow up to learn not to trust that joy because something is probably going to happen to take it away from us.  But it truly is “cheap medicine,” and many studies have shown that laughter actually improves our health; in fact, some people have recovered in amazing ways from serious illnesses by focusing on things that make them laugh, like their favorite comedies on television.

Laughter makes us brighter; it puts a sparkle in our eyes and brightens our faces.  The sound of laughter can be infectious, and other people can benefit from our laughter.  I know that I feel great when I’m laughing, as long as I’m not laughing at someone or at someone’s expense.

Whenever I’m in stressful periods of my life, I make it a point to find a comedy or two on TV, usually in syndication so I can watch them every day, and I set aside an hour each afternoon to watch them, relax, and laugh.  When I was working on two MA’s at the same time, the shows were Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs.  Later on, when I was incredibly busy with work and other stuff, they were The Simpsons and Seinfeld.  It doesn’t matter what the shows are–as long as they make me laugh, then I’m getting a very real benefit from them.

I also tend to read things like Calvin and Hobbes, for I know that a good laugh can make me feel much better on many different levels.

If we sit around and wait for laughter to show up, if we expect funny things to happen without looking for them, then we’re bound to be disappointed.  But if we make time for things that will make us laugh, we’re going to find that the laughter becomes a very important part of who we are.  The more I laugh, the easier it becomes for me to laugh, and I’m very thankful that I’ve made plenty of time to practice.

Today’s I Ching Hexagram for 3/6

Today’s I Ching Hexagram for Everyone:

13: Fellowship

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Hexagram 13

General Meaning: Fellowship. When communal bonds unite people, great success is possible. But such bonds can develop only when personal interests are subordinated to goals that serve the greater good of all. The broader the basis for action, the greater the benefits that can be achieved. And conversely, the greater the potential good, the more powerful the support behind it. A spirit of cooperation steadies the boat, but it helps to have a beautiful island to row towards.

Learn to respect the strength in diversity, for a community’s true power lies not in its numbers, but in the diverse skills and resources of its members. Just as the stoutest walls are reinforced with many different materials, so the strongest groups allow differences to co-exist inside the whole.

With a unified group solidly behind you, even difficult enterprises can be attempted without great risk.

Daily Horoscopes for 3/6

General Daily Horoscope

The Moon blasts into Aries at 12:13 am EST, heightening our anticipation of what’s ahead as she heralds the planetary exodus from sensitive Pisces into action-packed Aries. The Moon’s conjunction with expansive Jupiter increases our expectations for immediate satisfaction, especially with respect to political issues. However, the Sun’s annoying quincunx to resistant Saturn is an unpleasant reminder that hard work and patience are still necessary.

Aries Horoscope
Aries Horoscope (Mar 21 – Apr 19)

Although it’s not quite your time of year yet, you can already feel the excitement. Instead of seeing obstacles, you see possibilities. Rather than thinking about the hard work ahead, you are visualizing your destination as if you have already arrived. However, there is a little problem: your current tendency to avoid the more challenging aspects of what’s happening can quickly land you in a heap of trouble. Prevent problems by slowing down and thinking before you act.

Taurus Horoscope
Taurus Horoscope (Apr 20 – May 20)

Although the finish line may be in sight, you know better than to break out in an unrestrained sprint. Fortunately, your tendency to conserve energy is wise, for a trick of light could make your goal appear much closer than it actually is. There’s no reason to be discouraged today; just set a pace that you can keep up for a while because the marathon isn’t quite over yet.

Gemini Horoscope
Gemini Horoscope (May 21 – Jun 20)

Someone may be putting you up on a pedestal today, but it’s not a good idea to buy into this false superiority. Instead of seeing yourself as top dog, let go of any attachment you might have to exercising authority. You’ll be much happier if you are a willing participant in a group activity than if you fight to be in charge. Sharing responsibility now will work out better for all involved.

Cancer Horoscope
Cancer Horoscope (June 21 – Jul 22)

You may not be happy about being forced out of your shell today, but others are looking to you for guidance and it’s wise to share your perspective. Still, you’re reluctant to push your ideas onto others and might wish that you didn’t have to take on new responsibilities now. Thankfully, your current service will be rewarded if you don’t get carried away with your own power.

Leo Horoscope
Leo Horoscope (Jul 23 – Aug 22)

Success will be yours today if you can strike a sensible balance between your grandiose plans and the actual limitations of the current circumstances. Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to get so enthused with such big ideas that you end up spreading yourself too thin and falling short of your expectations. Even if you have high hopes, you’ll accomplish more by moderating your ambitions. Make quality, not quantity, your primary goal.

Virgo Horoscope
Virgo Horoscope (Aug 23 – Sep 22)

Partnerships continue to be a major focus now, but the dynamics of a current relationship could grow more complex as the balance of power begins to shift. You may be so enamored with the potential of working with such an optimistic person that you give up more control than is necessary. Or, perhaps, you are too quick to trust someone who hasn’t yet earned your respect. Opportunities abound today, but don’t forget to use your common sense when choosing which ones to pursue.

Libra Horoscope
Libra Horoscope (Sep 23 – Oct 22)

Someone may come along today with an intriguing idea and a convincing sales pitch. However, you could be so eager for an adventure that you say yes before you even know all the details. Keep in mind that you are more susceptible now to a story that’s built on big dreams and blue sky. Check your facts twice before jumping onto someone else’s bandwagon or you might waste time running down a dream that isn’t even yours.

Scorpio Horoscope
Scorpio Horoscope (Oct 23 – Nov 21)

You may have had a recent break from your regular routine. Now, however, you’re eager to get back into the swing of things and reestablish a daily regimen. Instead of repeating a pattern of constantly chasing deadlines, look at this time as an opportunity to change the rules of the game so you can get ahead of the curve. You have more power than you realize, and it just may be time to flex your muscles.

Sagittarius Horoscope
Sagittarius Horoscope (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

It’s not easy to contain your enthusiasm today as the Moon joins your key planet Jupiter in impulsive Aries. You don’t want to wait for the red light to change to green; you’re ready to hit the gas pedal right now. Unfortunately, moving too fast can lessen your chances for success. Over the next few weeks you have an incredible opportunity to do something that’s significant while also having fun. Push ahead with cautious determination instead of flying by the seat of your pants.

Capricorn Horoscope
Capricorn Horoscope (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

You have your sights set high today, but the Sun’s anxious quincunx to karmic Saturn may raise your concerns about being unprepared for what’s ahead. Instead of wishing that you had worked harder in the past or gone further with your schooling, consider what you can do now that will impact your career later on. Just remember that maintaining a positive attitude in the present can help to create the solid foundation required for a stellar future.

Aquarius Horoscope
Aquarius Horoscope (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

You might not have a lot of downtime today because you’re trying to pack so much into your life right now. Unfortunately, you could run into a stone wall if you’re not paying attention to how much energy you are expending. Don’t wait for a reality check to stop you in your tracks. Slowing down voluntarily not only increases your pleasure in the present moment, it will also help you accomplish more than you thought possible.

Pisces Horoscope
Pisces Horoscope (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

You might expect your motivation to lag today because the Moon leaves Pisces very early this morning. However, you are more likely to feel a powerful boost of energy, even if you are faced with a tricky situation. Don’t make the mistake of believing that you can overcome an obstacle now by sheer force. Instead, take your time and slowly build on what you’ve already started.

Tree Magick

Sacred and magickal trees are found in the religions and mythology of almost every culture. Trees form the link between earth and sky, because they have their roots in soil and their branches in the air and were originally regarded an a creative form of the Earth Mother.

In early forms of religion, people believed that trees were themselves deities, a belief that gradually gave way to the idea that the spirits of deities or nature essences lived within the tree. In Japan, temples have been built around sacred trees for more than two thousand years. Here it is believed the Mononoke, the magickal life force, is concentrated in trees and rocks. The Japanese Cryptomeria and the evergreen sakaki trees are especially rich in this force and are often used for building sacred shrines. The tree itself is incorporated into the central pillar so the indwelling power of the nature deity might bless the site.

In parts of Sweden until quite recently, a guardian tree, often elm, ash or lime, was planted close to farms or small settlements and it was forbidden to take even a leaf from this tree. Pregnant women used to embrace the tree to ensure an easy delivery.

Trees have also been associated from Africa to Eastern Europe with the spirits of fertility, who regulated rain, sunshine and good harvests. In Germany and France, in some agricultural areas, a large leafy branch or even a whole tree, decorated with corn ears or the last corn sheaf, adorns the last wagon of the harvest. It was traditionally set on the roof of the farmhouse or barn for a year to ensure future good harvests.

In India, sacred trees are still visited in order to ask for blessings, especially for fertility, from the indwelling spirit or deity; food and flowers are left at the tree shrine and offering ribbons are tied to the tree.

The Celtic Druids worshipped not in temples, but in groves of trees. These natural sites may have predated the Celts by thousands of years; and still in Wales, Brittany and Cornwall the trees are hung with ribbons, trinkets and petitions for healing and blessings.

Herb Magick

Herbal healing remedies are becoming increasingly popular in the modern world as it is discovered that some hold the key to curing modern ills; generally too they are gentler and less toxic than drugs created artificially. This knowledge has been around in some cases for hundreds or even thousands of years, but became disregarded or forgotten and is now being incorporated further into modern medicine.

Herb magick is an equally ancient tradition, one that does not need elaborate tools or complex rituals. However, there is a great overlap between herb healing and magick, for herb rituals too can trigger the body’s own self-healing system because of their abundant life force.

Though herb magick is simple, it is also very potent. As well as using spells, you can draw on their strengths in a number of ways in your daily life.

But it cannot be said enough, do not use herbal medicine in the place of actual doctor’s care. You might think you can diagnosis yourself but you can. In situation such as this seek medical attention. Never take a chance with your life.
